Academic projects

Darsena and the city

-revitalization of the public realm in Ravenna

Master thesis academic year: 2018 /2019 Univarsita di Bologna / Technical University of Lodz Supervisor: prof Antonio Esposito / dr inĹź. arch. Maciej Olenderek

The main purpose of the following thesis is a critical reflection on the approach in planning and revitalizing post-industrial areas. In most cases, cities have developed within their borders such areas, adjacent to city centers, but separated from the active part of the metropolis. They operate monofunctionally and stand outside of the recreational and commercial life of a city.

The Darsena, which is a part of the Candiano chanel, is the axsis of industrial zone in Ravenna. The main problem of the area, indetyfied during the analysis process is its isolation, which leads to stagnation and slow dying of this neighborhood. It appeared as a result of several transformations of a space, as well as more barriers (spatial, scenic and communication) appear. However, elements such as railways, roads or the canal itself, created with the aim of improving communication, have become barriers in the spatial development of the city.

It can not fail to notice city effort in the process of revitalization this area to life. The projects presented in previous chapters, initiated by the city authorities, have been prepared for years for integration and reuse of Darsena. The plans, however, are extremely ambitious. Each of the projects, created over the years, assumes the demolition of the majority of old buildings and major transformations in the spatial structure of this part of the city. Consequently, the nature of post-industrial areas would be completely changed. In my opinion, getting rid of the obvious identity of the place is difficult to build a bond between the residents and the revitalized area. That is why, in my project, I set up, as a priority, preservation of post-industrial infrastructure and acting exclusively in the area of public space.

Portugese Consulate in Barcelona

academic year: 2014 /2015 La Salle Ramon Llull Universitat in Barcelona Mentor: Pedro Ayesta

This is one of the three projects I have done at La Salle Rammon Llull University. I decided to present this one because I think it represents an interesting architectural form in relation to the performing function.

As a building intended for government and administration, it should be characterized by such features as transparency, accessibility and friendliness for people who want to settle their affairs. At the same time it should be equally safe and ensuring discretion for diplomats and officials working in it.

Small building site forced me to economical disposition of space. I decided to divide particular function by floors. The groundfloor and the first floor level are reserved for ordinary people who come for meeting with officials. Lower floor provides space for artistic events or meetings at the summit. It could be also expanded to the adjacent, hidden gardens. The highest floor is occupied by the consul office. There is also a roof top garden provided for his disposal.

The construction of the building's facade make completely different impression inside and outside of the building. Interior is well-lit, open and light, with big surfaces of glazing that let the surrounding affects the interior. The same glass walls, which could look dark and aggressive from outside are covered by a bright shell.

I invite you to familiarize with my project with a great attention to game of levels and solid's cutouts.

Municipal

Cultural Center academic year: 2015 /2016 Lodz University of Technology, Poland Mentor: dr WĹ‚odzimierz Witkowski

The project is a concept of the energy efficient Municipal Cultural Center in Nowe Miasto nad PilicÄ…. It is especially important to me because it is my diploma thesis, appreciated by the University and awarded by other editors. The form of the building arose as result of the analysis of historical buildings, located on this area in the past. At the same time, I took into account shape of the terrain, view values, the current urban context and the shape of the block that promotes energy efficiency. The sloped site is surrounded by small escarpment, covered with trees, with an open view for the Pilica River valley. Such a location requires focusing on the protection of natural values, as well as enhancing its beauty, by integrating nature and the building. The new Cultural Centre is visually divided into several blocks, to avoid domination of the volume among the nearest buildings. It consists of a partially recessed, the lowest level, which is the "basis" and a platform to overcome differences of terrain levels. It also links the entrance and other external spaces. A gentle green embankment directs passers-by towards the park and provides an ideal view point for beautiful river's meanders. Above it, two wings with a different architectural form were placed. They have an elongated shape and are covered with a sloped roof. They bend into curves, creating interesting external spaces between the walls. I tried to achieve a dynamic, modern shape, despite the theoretically traditional form.I also decided to incorporate the amphitheatre with the existing scarp and a scene whose background is the green wall of the hill. To provide properties that limitates energy consumption and gets benefits from solar radiation, there were used passive and active solar systems. In this case the most important was the right orientation towards the sunpath. The main wings of the building are oriented north-south. I used large glazings where there could be the biggest solar gain. Hence, the characteristic bend of the form and the subtle orientation of the walls towards the south. In the midday, however, when the sun's rays are the strongest, they are reflected from the blinds and illuminate the interior with indirect, reflected light. Walls that can not receive solar radiation profits are insulated with a thick layer of thermal insulation. In addition, I used a green roof, suitably insulated, with thick layers of soil and vegetation, providing a better thermal insulation than the standard roof.

African Art Museum in Milan

academic year: 2017 /2018 Universita di Bologna Mentor: Ildebrando Clemente Team: Alessandro Cleri / Riccardo Guerrieri

I had the pleasure of woring on this project on the oldest italian university in Bologna. It was quite a challenge, mainly because of the scale of project. In the first place, we had to think about the urban scale of the place, to combine our project in a symbiosis with a very important space for Milan - Parco Sempione. It was a challenge to interference in this closed axial system. The problem of this area, however, was the adjacency of the railway line and the road separating the park from the city. To act in this difficult urban layout, we approach in an ironic way, what gave us more freedome in the loosening of this paompatic place. We decided to use existing forms to reinterprate and mix them into a new building system. At the same time we tried to maintain an important axial layout and respect existing landmarks like the church, the railway station or the Palace of Art. The building complex is divided into three components. Two of them are intended for a museum and additional functions. The most eye-catching eliptical element is Esedra - the colonnade surrounding the shallow water reservoir, integrated with the Palace of Art. It moves visitors to a different natural environment and helps them to forget where and when they are. The main museum building is located on the right side of the plan. The irony game is visible also in the plans of this building. Ambiguous entrances and openings illuminating the ground floor, huge and overshadowing walls, with rhythmic division of the pilasters referring to the Gothic soaring buttresses. Naturale materials dominate everywhere - wood and white stone. The interior of the museum consist of the system of connected galleries. Each of them has a different division, interior height and lighting, which makes it easy to differenciate spaces. At the end and beginning of each wing there are located loggias, which form a buffer zone against each galery, so that visitors can breathe for a moment, refresh the mind looking at the panorama of the city, before the next portion of art offered by the museum.
