T

his season brings some exciting new products of existing relationships here at Agate. First, we are bringing out Grant Park, our fifth book by Pulitzer Prize–winning columnist Leonard Pitts, Jr. In 2012, Agate Bolden published Pitts’s previous novel Freeman to wide acclaim, and everyone here at Agate is proud to be publishing what we think will be his most success-

ful book yet. In partnership with the Chicago Tribune, we are publishing two new historical photo

books—The Chicago Tribune Book of the Chicago Bears and A Century of Progress—as well as a recipe

collection from “Dinner at Home” columnist JeanMarie Brownson, famed for her collaborations with Rick Bayless. We are also thrilled to introduce new voices this season, including that of acclaimed food blogger Jocelyn Delk Adams, whose Grandbaby Cakes is our premier fall cookbook debut. On her blog of the same name, Adams charms readers with sweet recipes and stories of her heritage—her book celebrates both culinary tradition and innovation, deliciously, via cake. Indie-rocker Freda Love Smith, in her memoir Red Velvet Underground, writes about the intersection of food, music, and family. And in All Jokes Aside, Raymond Lambert and Chris Bournéa chronicle Lambert’s journey from Wall Streeter to owner of the legendary Chicago comedy club that helped launch the careers of Steve

GRANT PARK Leonard Pitts, Jr.

L

eonard Pitts, Jr., the Pulitzer Prize–winning columnist, found breakout success and wide critical acclaim in 2012 with Freeman, his previous novel from Agate Bolden. Now Pitts returns with an even richer, more complex, and more suspenseful story—one that takes on the past 45 years of US race relations through the stories of two veteran journalists: a superstar black columnist and his unsung white editor. Grant Park, a page-turning and provocative look at black and white relations in contemporary America, blends the poignant and the absurd in a powerful narrative that showcases Pitts’s gift for telling emotionally wrenching stories.

The novel begins in 1968, with Martin Luther King Jr.’s final days in Memphis. The setting then moves to the eve of the 2008 presidential election, and the novel cuts back and forth between the two eras as the tightly plotted story unfolds. Disillusioned and weary, columnist Malcolm Toussaint, fueled by yet another report of unarmed black men gunned down by police, hacks into his newspaper’s computer system to post an incendiary column that had been rejected by his editors. Toussaint then disappears, and his longtime editor, Bob Carson, is fired within hours of the column’s publication.

While a furious Carson tries to find Toussaint—at the same time dealing with the reappearance of a lost love from his college days as a peace activist—Toussaint is abducted by two improbable but still-dangerous white supremacists plotting to bomb Obama’s planned rally in Grant Park. As Election Day unfolds, Toussaint and Carson are forced to remember the choices they made as idealistic, impatient young men, when both their lives were changed profoundly by their work in the civil rights movement. Forty years later, they are presented with an explosive opportunity to make peace with their respective pasts. Grant Park is an audacious and eloquent take on politics, race, and recent American history, and yet another demonstration that Pitts, beyond his identity as a lauded journalist, has emerged as an important voice in contemporary American fiction.

Leonard Pitts, Jr. is a nationally syndicated columnist for the Miami Herald and winner of the 2004 Pulitzer Prize for commentary, in addition to many other awards. He is also the author of the novels Freeman (Agate Bolden, 2012) and Before I Forget (Agate Bolden, 2009); the collection Forward From This Moment: Selected Columns, 1994–2009, Daily Triumphs, Tragedies, and Curiosities (Agate Bolden, 2009); and Becoming Dad: Black Men and the Journey to Fatherhood (Agate Bolden, 2006). Born and raised in Southern California, Pitts now lives in suburban Washington, DC, with his wife and children. PRAISE FOR LEONARD PITTS, JR.’S NOVEL FREEMAN:

As a child, Adams and her family would routinely embark on the ten-hour journey from their home in Chicago to Winona, Mississippi, where she would watch her grandmother—affectionately called “Big Mama”—invent delicious, melt-in-your-mouth desserts. Over the years, Big Mama’s recipes became the fabric of their family heritage. Much like Adams’s nationally recognized blog of the same name, Grandbaby Cakes was written to honor her grandmother’s baking, showcase her own pastry work in an accessible way, and thank those who came before by passing on these edible family traditions. Grandbaby Cakes begins with helpful sections that introduce readers to baking tricks and techniques as well as ingredient tips and advice on kitchen equipment. The book is divided into six sections: Pound Cakes, Layer Cakes, Sheet Cakes, Baby Cakes (cupcakes and cakelettes), Celebration Cakes, and Seasonal Cakes. These bold, eclectic, and sophisticated recipes are based on Big Mama’s own centerpiece desserts, giving each cake something familiar mixed with something new. BEHIND THE SMILE

I

Trade Cloth September 2015 $27

6×9 isbn: 978-1-57284-176-5

• A deeply insightful memoir from an Emmy-winning journalist • A story of race, gender, and the political process that’s highly relevant today • At the time of her election, Moseley Braun was only the second African American since Reconstruction elected to the US Senate; to this day she is still the only African-American woman elected to the US Senate

n 1992, Carol Moseley Braun became the first, and to this day the only, African-American woman elected to the US Senate. Long before this historic victory, which Barack Obama would later say prefigured his own path to the Senate and the presidency, veteran Chicago journalist Jeannie Morris saw an incredible opportunity. Here was a bold and politically courageous candidate, a feminist and sensible progressive with whom Morris quickly identified on a personal level. Morris joined the campaign to write the official story of a brilliant retail politician with an incandescent smile. What happened next resulted in a story that went well beyond what Morris could have imagined. Behind the Smile is the riveting campaign-trail memoir of a journalist coming to grips with the shortcomings of an ascendant politician—a charismatic, fast-rising star whose personal relationship with campaign manager Kgosie Matthews led to her undoing. The book unfolds as the personal journey of a sympathetic reporter reconciling her own belief in an inspiring, trailblazing leader with her responsibility to deliver the facts. Drawing from on-the-scene reportage, copious journal entries, and interviews with key staff, as well as extensive access to Moseley Braun herself, this book is a slice of vivid political history that reads as written while it was being made. Featuring contemporary interviews with many of the campaign’s key players, Behind the Smile is a compelling, detailed account of Moseley Braun’s fascinating story.

MIDWAY  FA L L 2 01 5

Though Moseley Braun ultimately won the Illinois Senate seat, her entanglement with Matthews—and the political missteps that followed—would cost her the next election and come to define her career. Morris brings the social and political impact of Moseley Braun’s story—from her meteoric rise to her eventual downfall—into clear focus.

Jeannie Morris is the author of the bestselling book Brian Piccolo: A Short Season, which led to the beloved 1971 film Brian’s Song. Her journalism has earned her 11 Emmys, numerous Illinois AP and UPI awards, and a National Black Journalists Award for her program Air Jordan. In 2014, she became the first woman to receive the Ring Lardner Award.

reda Love was a 19-year-old college dropout who’d escaped Indiana for Boston when she became the drummer for indie-rock stalwarts the Blake Babies in 1989. Twenty-five years later, she’s the suburban mother of two teenaged sons, teaching at a prestigious university, and thinking about restarting her last band, the Mysteries of Life. Her oldest is getting ready to head to college, and she realizes one of the best things she can do for him is teach him to cook. Red Velvet Underground tells the story of how Smith’s indie-rock past evolved into her domestic present. Loosely framed around cooking lessons she gives her older son, her story moves back and forward in time as she recollects how she got started in music and how her career in rock eventually dovetailed with her passion for cooking and, later, the growth of her family.

Freda Love Smith is a lecturer in the School of Communication at Northwestern University. She is the co-founder of the bands the Mysteries of Life and the Blake Babies. She has a monthly column in Paste and her short stories have appeared in numerous journals. She lives in Evanston, IL, with her partner, Jake Smith, and two sons.

• An introduction from Chicago Tribune reporter and historian Ron Grossman provides insight into the significance of the fair

rawn from the Chicago Tribune’s vast archives, A Century of Progress is a collection of rare—and in many cases, previously unseen— photographs documenting the Century of Progress International Exposition, the world’s fair held in Chicago from 1933 to 1934. Conceived during the Roaring Twenties and born during the Great Depression, this sprawling event celebrated the city’s centennial with industrial and scientific displays, lascivious entertainment, and a touch of unadulterated bad taste. During this time, more than 48 million visitors flocked to Chicago’s lakefront to experience one of the most expansive displays of technological advancement and cultural diversity to take place in the 20th century. At a time when the entire US population numbered just over 125 million people, this world’s fair left an indelible mark on the collective consciousness of American culture, and A Century of Progress captures that feeling through its historic photographs. These images bear invaluable witness to a civic milestone that forever after was honored by the fourth star on Chicago’s flag.

Drama Review

“Like the glory days of Saturday Night Live, Too Much Light is not just funny, but faintly surreal.” Backstage

“Too Much Light is not a typical night on the town. In fact, it’s not a typical anything. It is a wildly inventive roller-coaster of a play designed for the sharp of wit and tongue.” Washington Square News

“An athletic endeavor to be sure, and one which viscerally exploits the connection between performer and spectator for maximum ka-pow!” nytheatre.com
