ever Stop is the wrenching memoir of Simba Sana, the cofounder and former CEO of Karibu Books, a major indie-bookselling phenomenon and what was once the most successful black-owned company in the history of the book industry. In this memoir, Sana reveals how his experience with Karibu jumpstarted his lifelong journey to better understanding himself, human nature, faith, and American culture—which ultimately helped him develop the powerful personal philosophy that drives his life today. Born Bernard Sutton in Washington, DC, Sana grew up in the cycle of poverty and violence that dominated inner-city life in the ’70s and ’80s. Sana’s academic success got him into college, where his life increasingly embodied the contradictions that plagued his youth. Committed to self-improvement and selfdiscipline, he grew into a successful businessman while becoming an impassioned Black Nationalist and Pan-Africanist. He lived the corporate life at Ernst & Young by day while leading radical consciousness-raising groups by night. Building Karibu became Sana’s opportunity to bind the disparate elements of his life together. Ultimately, though, the paradoxes in his identity and his accumulated emotional wounds confounded his effort to overcome his business reversals, and everything Sana built—his marriage, family, and business— was lost in an incredibly brief period of time. yne Sandberg was never much for self-promotion, but his Hall of Fame credentials say it all. Sandberg hit for average and power, setting a record for career home runs by a second baseman since eclipsed by Jeff Kent. He fielded his position with range and finesse, winning nine Gold Gloves for defensive excellence and setting records for consecutive games without an error. He ran the bases with skill and daring, stealing 54 bases in 1985 and scoring 100 or more runs seven times. He prided himself on doing “the little things,” and doing them correctly. Contemporaries say his approach to the game was an ideal complement to his ability. “He had great baseball acumen, and like a lot of great players he honed it over the years and got to a real good understanding of what he needed to do in specific situations,” said Steve Stone, a former bigleague pitcher and Cubs broadcaster who watched Sandberg for 12 seasons. “He was a No. 2 hitter for most of his career. That carries a lot of different responsibilities, and Ryno won an MVP award (in 1984) as a No. 2 hitter—I don’t know how often that’s happened,” Stone said. “You could not throw the ball by him inside. The pitchers knew he was going to catch every ground ball, turn the double play, throw with a shortstop’s arm . . . there’s a reason he had those overwhelming defensive statistics. His teammates knew he has was going to be there every day. He was a total professional.” The late Tribune columnist and MLB historian Jerome Holtzman covered thousands of players in his four decades as a baseball writer, and he numbered Sandberg among the best he saw. “Ryno was Jack Armstrong, the All-American boy,” Holtzman said. “He’s one of the best individuals I’ve ever known on or off the field, a perfect player with all the qualities you look for in a person.” Mark Grace played next to Sandberg and hit behind him for 11 years. “He was a fabulous No. 2 hitter–he made all of us better,” Grace said. “I’m disappointed he wasn’t first ballot. He was the best second baseman of his era, and he dominated the game for a five-, six-year period.” Grace was in college in 1984, four years away from Wrigley Field when “the Sandberg Game” took place. It›s a sure-fire topic of nostalgic conversation whenever two or more longtime Cubs fans gather in one place.

How could Lawrence ever forget a 300-foot drive exploding off the bat of a 10-year-old? “It was astonishing the power he generated from that swing he worked on so much with his dad,” recalled Lawrence, Bryant’s first coach after his father. “You could tell then Kris was special.”

magine how it made Mike Bryant feel— and what he feels when he watches his 6-foot-5, 215-pound son launch balls over the walls at Wrigley Field. One homer earlier this season scraped the upper reaches of the new video board above the left-field bleachers. One from Sunday crashed into the board so hard the Statcast system estimated it would have traveled 495 feet, the longest home run in the majors in 2015. Kris wound up as National League rookie of the year. And his team reached the National League Championship Series. Not a bad start to a career. “It’s killing me I can’t be at the park more,” Mike said. “I’m a baseball rat. I’m a lifer.” Mike Bryant, is a chemical salesman who has had a business as a hitting instructor for 13 years. Kris never has read Williams’ book but heard an abridged version narrated by his dad. As Kris would do, Mike spent three years playing college baseball before being drafted and turning pro. The elder Bryant, who grew up in Acton, Mass., also was a slugger, setting a school career record for home runs at the University of Massachusetts-Lowell (then Division II) that stood for nearly 10 years after he left. In his final two seasons, Mike hit 20 home runs and drove in 88 runs in just 60 games. The Red Sox picked him in the ninth round of the 1980 draft. An outfielder, he played 121 games over two seasons in the low minors before being cut, hitting .204 with four home runs in 348 at-bats, according to baseball-reference.com. While Mike Bryant still expresses frustration over getting what he felt was an insufficient chance to prove himself, the brief stay in the Red Sox organization would have a lasting impact on his life because of the hours spent with Williams. Until the mid-1970s, almost no major-league teams had full-time hitting instructors. Williams was a roving instructor, and Mike Bryant took full THE BEST- L AI D PL AN S

his is one of those stories that would sound apocryphal except its protagonists, father and son, recall it the same way. The story spans three generations to link Kris Bryant through his father, Mike, to one of baseball’s legendary hitters, Ted Williams. As a minor leaguer, Mike Bryant got face-to-face hitting instruction from Williams. He treats Williams’ classic book on the subject, the “Science of Hitting,” as a bible. Mike’s favorite verse, the one he recited endlessly to both his sons when they first picked up a bat: hit the ball hard and hit it in the air. So it was that the first time 5-year-old Kris swung at a hardball pitch from Mike, he hit under the ball, as Williams advised, and lofted it about 130 feet, well into the outfield of a Little League diamond near the family’s home in Las Vegas. “I liked hitting home runs when I was little,” Kris said. “To do that, you have to hit the ball in the air, so that’s why I caught on pretty quick to the idea of hit it high and hard. “When I got to high school and college, where you begin learning about angles and stuff, it started to get easier. But I have always had that swing, in terms of a slight uppercut, so I guess I got it pretty young.” That story can fit nicely into the Kris Bryant saga, the one growing around the Cubs’ prodigious young slugger. And then there is this story, with some details vague, about the contest Kris lost a year or so after the now fabled fly ball. Bryant, then 6 or 7, was taking batting practice with kids two to three years older when his dad and five other coaches threw in $20 apiece as a prize for the first to hit a ball over the fence. An older kid won, and Kris was left crying in the dugout. “That was the first experience where the competitive side of me came out,” Kris said. “I was really upset I didn’t get it.” Soon after, when the little guy went deep for the first time in a game, Kris got $100 from his dad and used it to buy a bike. “It was pretty satisfying,” Kris said. Or how about this story? Just 10 at the time, Kris Bryant stepped to the plate to see how his technically-sound swing would hold up against 13-year-old pitching. Matt Lawrence remembers scouting Bryant at the ballpark that day in Las Vegas for the parochial

On June 23, 1984, Sandberg drove in seven runs and hit game-tying home runs in successive at-bats against All-Star reliever Bruce Sutter as the Cubs rallied to beat the St. Louis Cardinals 12-11. The Saturday victory, beamed to a national television audience as NBC›s Game of the Week, was the jumping-off point for the Cubs› surprising run to a division title and for Sandberg’s MVP campaign. After the game, Cardinals manager Whitey Herzog referred to Sandberg as “Baby Ruth” and called it one of the greatest performances he had seen. “I think what made that game special was that the two home runs were hit off the best reliever of that time–Bruce Sutter,” Sandberg said. “That game took me to another level, and it brought to life what my manager, Jim Frey, talked about to me in spring training, about being more of an impact player capable of having games like that. “That was the level I wanted to maintain for the rest of my career.” Former Cub Mike Krukow pitched against Sandberg for eight years and had his own version of the “Sandberg Game.” “In all the time I faced him, he never swung at the first pitch—never,” Krukow said. “So this one time I’m facing my old team, the adrenaline’s going, I start him out with an inside fastball with a little extra on it, run it in on his hands . . . a perfect pitch, I thought. And he turns on it and jerks it out of the ballpark. That was it. Rick Sutcliffe struck out 12 of us and beat us 1-0. I still get [upset] over that one.” Krukow smiled and shook his head. No disgrace in giving up a dinger to a Hall of Famer. “No question Ryno belongs,” Krukow said. “He did it all. And the bigger the at-bat, the tougher he was. A total class act.” Bob Brenly, a former Cubs broadcaster and bigleague catcher, said Krukow wasn’t the only pitcher to lose a battle of wits to Sandberg. “He used to set up pitchers,” Brenly said, “You might start him out with a curveball and he’d buckle his knees, like a Little Leaguer. You’d think you fooled him. Then you’d throw him that curve on 1-and-2 and he’d jump on it and hit it out of the ballpark. “Very smart hitter, very tough out . . . just a great player with a totally professional attitude,” Brenly said. Sandberg could have played just about anywhere on the diamond, but wound up at second base, which was

It’s effortless!! It’s foolproof!!! It’s a miracle!!!! Except it’s not. Real life isn’t like that. You will go off the diet, fall off the wagon, cheat, or however you describe it. We all do. I do. Frequently. That’s life. It’s human nature. It’s choices. It’s running low on willpower because you’re tired of having to work so damn hard to be well, when everyone around you can blithely eat whatever they want and feel fine. (Everyone around you may not actually feel fine, but you’re not them, so you don’t know.) From the outside it looks like everyone in the world can eat whatever they want with no consequences. Except us. It’s hard and it’s tiring. So we go off the diet, fall off the wagon, cheat. Or as I prefer to say: I made an unhelpful choice. The words you choose are important here. Because this is an ongoing lifestyle. It will likely need to be your new reality for the rest of your life if you want to feel well long term. (Once you’ve completed your trigger testing, you’ll find that the diet isn’t restrictive, especially once you’re used to it.) And I’ve learned that forgiving yourself is an important part of the process too. Because “diets” are temporary. If you’re “on a diet,” in your mind there is an end point, a finish line when you achieve your goal, and then you can go back to your real life. 128 t h e m i gr a i n e r e l i e f p l a n
They’re a detour. You go off diets—and back on them—over and over. That’s why I call this book a Plan. Writing this book helped gel thoughts I’ve had about the word dieting for many years. We, especially women, tend to use modifiers like good and bad in relation to food. You have probably heard someone say, “Oh, I was so bad last night. I ate two desserts!” We use other loaded terms too. Staying on the wagon implies an above-ground balancing act, when clearly the ground and gravity will never stop calling. Cheating runs the gamut from passing the answers in fourth grade to being caught in a tawdry motel room. Being bad sounds like a kindergartener being scolded. I have worked to change how I think about food altogether, and instead, frame the daily food decisions I make as helpful or unhelpful choices. I try to forgive myself, let those unhelpful choices go, and move forward. Unhelpful choices are made one at a time. They’re not irrevocable. Making an unhelpful choice doesn’t mean I am weak, a terrible person, or bad. It was simply an unhelpful choice that I—an adult—made. It may have tasted really good. It may have been a really fun party. When there are consequences, I own up to them. Instead of pretending—as every weight loss show and diet book does—that this time it’s going to stick, let’s assume it won’t. At least not forever. And learning to shift your mindset, from a fixed mindset to a growth mindset, is key. According to researcher Carol Dweck in her book Mindset, people with a fixed mindset believe that they are who they are; they can’t really change.
