Urban Landscapes
01
multi-family housing | 100,000 SF | Fall 2013
The project addresses housing in a very hostile and industrial area. It creates a destination point in the Grand Metro link station between the SLU Campuses by establishing an Urban landscape for the community. The urban landscape creates sections that can be used for: festivals, gathering, concerts, farmer’s market, picnic, celebrations, dining and retail space. It contains green spaces in multiple scales : community gardens, recreational gardens for the residents, roof top gardens for each building and terrace for each unit. The units also adress natural ventilation by having operable windows for each of the facade conditions as well as natural daylight through the light well and terraces. Each individual unit maximizes daylight and open space while maintaining private spaces close to the core of the building. The different units include studios, one bedroom and two bedrooms.
4
Circulation on Site 1. From Metro Link Station. 2. From Brand Blvd | highway. 3. From Prospect Street. 4. From Armory
5
Site Plan Urban carpet connecting the community from Grand Boulevard on top and the metrolink station under. It provides spaces for the community’s engagement and private spaces for the residents.
6
Metro Link Connection Urban Carpet sweeps up to the public level or commercial space and also conencts to the ground floor level towards the residential spaces
7
Exterior Public Experience 1. Urban farms and gardens. 2. View from the Urban Carpet public space.
8
Exterior Public Experience Lightwell in core of the two wings of the building brings light in and allows for natural ventilation. It also allows for social interaction. The windows contain opertional louvers to control privacy in each individual unit.
9
Inteior Experience Interior spaces are designed with open plan throughout the unit to allow circulation, light diffusion and natural ventilation. 1. Dinning spaces. 2. Living space in one bedroom unit. 3. Living spaces in two bedroom unit at night.
11
10
Units Each floor is stacked and rotating allowing for open terrace spaces to puncture arround the building. These open spaces allow for more natural ventilation and daylight inside. 1. View from unit terraces. 2. Conencting walkways with commercial space.
11
11
12
Window Operations Windows on the interior of the units’s circulation hallways faces the lightwells allowing for light to puncture the facade. Windows are operational. 1. View into the lightwell from unit interior. 2. View from circulation hallway.

Three of a Kind
Art Galleries | Spring 2013
02
Three of a kind hosts three galleries that allow different artists and exhibitions to be presented within their own space. The galleries have a loft design to allow for different kinds of sculptures and heights. The three galleries are placed within a shell that blends with the enviroment. The sheell not only brings light into the space in an artistic way with its unique cladding, but it also breaks in between to create voids to host public courtyards. The shell also contains a clear and spacious circulation space connecting all three galleries that allow for other activities and function to occur. The project is part of a Revit class taken at Georgia Tech to learn different techniques.

The Atlanta H Falcons have a new dome that is about to be built in North Side Drive , what many people describe as the barrier between the city F of Atlanta and the decaying historic neighborhood of Vine City. With new construction of sport facilities comes the opportunity to revitalize the area and bring activity to the rest of the neighborhood. The location studied in the nieghborhood of Vine City is in the middle of constracting zones that include historic universities, residential districts, downtown Atlanta, Phillips arena and Centennial Olympic Park. An Art District , accessible to a variety of users in Atlanta, would provide a strong destination point at the joint of these contrasting zones. The center would be dedicated to the arts, culture, the history of the area, family and community events, social activity, and more. A combination of flexible indoor and outdoor venues would provide for local, regional, and national events to occur during the entire year. Three communities would be serviced: the students of the Universities to the south, the residents of Vine City, and various visitors. Used in conjunction with the surrounding facilities, both existing and proposed, the center would provide a strong cultural component that the community is currently missing.

The theater is part of larger masterplan of revitalizing a community and establishing an arts distrct in Vine City, Atlanta. The projet started with the construction of a new dome for the Atlanta Hawks which is at the borderline of one of the most abandoned and dangerous neighborhoods. With the new construction and new visitors, the project is about taking advantage of the opportunity to make the community safe and self-sufficient connected to the rest of downtown and midtown. As part of the master plan, one of the major components is a place where the community can come together. The Performance Theater contains two programs: theater programs and public programs. It has gallery space and multi-purpose room for community event, restaurant, gallery space and a flexible theater that can convert into multiple purposes.

Enlightining Library of the Future | Fall 2012 AIAS | Kawneer Competition | 400,000 sf
The location for the New Central Library for Atlanta holds the same characteristics. In addition, it is neighbor to CNN Center, Phillips Arena, the Georgia Dome, the World of Coke, the Georgia Aquarium, and the future Center for Civil Rights and Multi-Modal Passenger Terminal. The new location supports the essence of the library of the future -- community, culture, and collaboration. The lot is also on axis with the Centennial Olympic Park. The New Central Library for Atlanta will be more than just a storage for books, it will be an incubator, a hub of interactive knowledge and a destination. At first, it only seemed too obvious to reiterate the urban language of Atlanta, but at the same time create a precedence for the spread of mixed-use high rises, to fully utilize the potential of each lot. But an orthogonal building that blends in space hardly indicates an incubator, a creative space for the community.

The internal library functions follow a similar train of thought as the formal language. The New Central Library contains several celebrated moments. Each floor is tailored to accommodate the more rigid functions at the center ( i.e. computer labs and classrooms), surrounding the core, while still alowing free and open spaces around the perimeter of the floors. Stacks mediate the rigid center to the free perimeter. This allows the books and the bookshelves to be more than just book shelves shoved and ignored in the corner of the building.

Filtrador, is about filtering both light and people through space depending on the function . Three main divisions exist; public for everyone to enjoy, shared for both the school and the public and then the academic with all of the classrooms. One of the main ideas is to have many meeting spots and public rooms to initiate interaction not only between faculty , public and students in general but to attract people from other majors to the school. The skeleton pavilion outside functions as a sculpture to attract students into the building as well as referencing the fact that it’s an Art and Media Art Center. This project is all about filtering people and light through layers ,making the art and social interactions apparent and visible

Axial Progress
08
Haiti Idea Competition |undefined SF | Spring 11 Haitians have a really strong relationship with the church and between each other and one of the major goals of this challenge is to find a way to rebuild those relationships through architecture .We have to create new lifestyle and sense of community through the built form of modular system. To start rebuilding a sense of community we establish 2 pairs of overlapping relationships: a sacred and education axis that will bridge tradition and progress; and an axis based on commerce that will tie the community to a larger economic scale. The first main axis begins with a Church at the highest level of a hilly site symbolizing tradition and importance with a facing school which represents the future of the community and hope. This axis is intercepted by a perpendicular axis going up the slope. The main road is framed by markets to enforce boundaries as well as cultural economy, moving forward and up towards a main plaza that then leads to a community center/community kitchen. The main plaza is what connects the community together and the community center creates an intermediary between the church, the community and the school. It will enforce a mixed circulation with constant interaction between the individuals therefore creating a strong relationship between the different types of buildings.
68
Gallery Spaces 1. Axial Parti Diagram 2. Adjacency Diagram 3. Location | Site Exploration
69
The Module + Structure The modular system with the use of skylights, light skins and light material helps achieve the most successful and sustainable design. Also the modular system is stronglybased on the idea of cross ventilation and flexibility in light. The structure is based on a steel structure and use of triangulation to control structural and live loads. 1. Roof PLan 2. Section 3. PLan + Ventilation 4. Structural Axon + Materials 5. 70
The Module + Structure An important aspect of any community is its social and cultural qualities. In order to be able to construct a successful community we have to take into consideration the way the Haitian community works and its lifestyle. It is important to apply their typology and language such as the use of simple forms that aggregate vertically and horizontally with the use of balconies that enforce the relationships and communication between the individual and a sense of community and network. For further development the community center can be expanded and turned into a business incubator. The market can be made bigger and broader and housing can start covering the entire site both horizontally and vertically.

National Competition for students using the Adobe Creative Suite programs. The competition was about representing your personal imagination. The abstract of the piece is the following : I traveled through Europe this summer and decided to “create my own little space in Venice since it was one of my favorite places. I took pictures all over Venice of my favorite sceneries including myself in the pictures. I combined the and created a new area, out of old areas, turning it into my space in Venice. This project not only represents me as my own unique space but also how in the modern world we need to take into consideration tradition and history to create a new things instead of disregarding it.
