The industry has faced challenges during these last two years while working through a pandemic, so this year we applaud the contractors for keeping construction going and for continuing to build the outstanding buildings and supporting infrastructure that help make San Diego America’s Finest City. The award entries showcase the diversity of projects from hospitality, education, recreation, health services, military, energy, tourism, bridge and road work, faithbased, and institutional work. These projects, public or private, are an integral part of the region’s economy, and they represent the hard work of architects, engineers, and construction firms. Communities around our region will benefit from these projects for years to come as they provide infrastructure to our growing region, as well as provide services to the residents and visitors. AGC San Diego Receives the Chapter of the Year Award The Associated General Contractors of America was founded in 1918 and has 89 chapters across the country. At the AGC of America Convention, AGC San Diego took home the “Chapter of the Year” award for excellent service to members working through a crisis-filled 2020, while continuing to build for the future. In Orlando, Florida to accept the award on behalf of the San Diego Chapter, was 2021 Chapter President, Mike Williamson, Pacific Coast Iron; Senior Vice President, Kari Kyne, Kyne Construction, Inc.; 2018 Past President Jeff Harper, Harper Construction Company Inc.; and Chapter CEO, Eddie Sprecco. The impacts of COVID-19 dominated 2020. The San Diego Chapter was recognized for its efforts to keep construction open and safely working during the pandemic, through partnerships, advocacy, and providing timely resources for its members. While responding to the demands of COVID-19, and working remotely for much of 2020, the San Diego Chapter was able to continue its ongoing advocacy work and make significant progress on long term projects critical to the future of the industry: • Raised and Spent over $500,000 on local candidates and initiatives. • Successfully defended Proposition A - PLA Ban at City of San Diego. • Completed construction of 44,000 square foot Headquarters and Apprenticeship Training Center in Lakeside. • Inked partnership with Western Electrical Contractors Association(WECA) to expand training opportunities. • Funded and Launched Construction Management Degree Program at San Diego State University • Built new membership database and website to enhance member services. • Hosted the largest Blood Drive in San Diego County • Signed Agreement with Black Contractors Association to enhance diversity and inclusion in the construction industry.

BUILDING CONSTRUCTION PROJECT: UC San Diego North Torrey Pines, Living and Learning Neighborhood CONTRACTOR: Clark Construction Group – CA, LP OWNER: UC San Diego ARCHITECT: HKS Architects, Inc. PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The 10-acre, 1,600,000 sq. ft landmark project seamlessly blends residential,

academic, commercial, and cultural programming into one neighborhood. It creates a true community composed of four residential housing units, a craft center, and a three-story dining area and market. Additional features include academic learning spaces, a 1,450-seat lecture hall, and office spaces for academic faculty and administration staff. The transformational project is the largest living and learning community in the UC system and the largest of its kind in UC San Diego’s history.

PROJECT: Chula Vista Fire Stations 3 & 5 CONTRACTOR: EC Constructors, Inc. OWNER: City of Chula Vista ARCHITECT: Jeff Katz Architecture PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This project utilized a Design Build delivery method for two fire stations

simultaneously. Fire Station 3 is a single-story 13,090 sq. ft. facility that includes two 50 ft. deep bays and two 70 ft. deep bays. The living spaces include a fitness room, kitchen, dining, day room, and individual bunk rooms. Chula Vista Fire Station 5 is a 12,310 sq. ft., single-story, state-of-the-art facility that includes three 70 ft. deep bays for parking fire equipment and emergency vehicles, associated support spaces, and living accommodations for up to 10 personnel. The design decisions of carefully selected bold colors were made in response to the City’s desire to maintain a Mexican modern architectural aesthetic and give the Fire Station its own unique presence in the community.

PROJECT: GSA San Ysidro Land Port of Entry Phase 2 CONTRACTOR: Hensel Phelps OWNER: The United States General Services Administration ARCHITECT: Stantec PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The $157 million dollar project was designed and constructed as the first

government-owned 24-hour/365-day facility to achieve LEED Platinum, NetZero Energy and NetZero Water Certifications. The overhauled 39-acre Port of Entry now features heightened standards in efficiency, security, aesthetics, and sustainability. Phase 2 included the preservation of the original 24,000 sq. ft. Historic Customs House built in 1933, a complete reconstruction of the 102,000 sq. ft Northbound Pedestrian Processing Building and the restoration of pedestrian and bus inspection lanes and facilities. The Phase 2 project featured: deconstruction of existing structures; new northbound pedestrian processing building and holding facilities; two overhead pedestrian walkways and a photovoltaic roof system; historic customs house renovation; pedestrian plazas; new Southbound pedestrian processing area; and east diesel engine-driven electrical generator and enclosure.

PROJECT: Veterans Affairs Outpatient Center Kearny Mesa CONTRACTOR: Lusardi Construction Company OWNER: U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs ARCHITECT: Ware Malcomb PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This project consisted of converting an existing 100,000 sq. ft. Bank of America

vacant money vault and office building into a 2-story Outpatient Center for Veterans Affairs. The work included structurally reinforcing the existing shell, knocking down two exterior walls, expanding the building by 25,000 sq. ft., and building all new interior partitions, restrooms, specialty clinics, and all associated structural and MEP work. Adjacent to the facility is a new poured-in-place 4-story, 395 stall parking garage. Design on the interiors focuses on light colors to provide a calming effect for the patients. The main entry incorporates biophilic design (the practice of connecting people and nature) with a large, preserved moss planter welcoming all who enter the building.

PROJECT: Airport Support Facilities at San Diego International Airport CONTRACTOR: Sundt Construction, Inc. OWNER: San Diego International Airport PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The Airport Support Facilities at the San Diego International

Airport was a two-year, $150 million-dollar progressive design-build project. It involved constructing four new buildings, and a $3.2-million-gallon underwater stormwater containment cistern spread out over three separate sites across the airport. The plan involved modernizing facilities, expanding, and becoming energy-efficient and climate-resilient. Sundt upgraded and consolidated operations from several existing buildings while also relocating several operations away from the footprint of the airport’s upcoming replacement of Terminal 1. The San Diego International Airport is the nation’s busiest singlerunway airport and serves 24 million passengers a year.

BUILDING CONSTRUCTION PROJECT: The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park CONTRACTOR: Bergelectric OWNER: San Diego Symphony ARCHITECT: Tucker Sadler Architects PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The project boasts a 13,000 sq. ft. stage and seats an audience up to 10,000. The

stage features a concert shell with a cantilevered roof, utilizing 5,000 individually controlled color changing Traxon lights for a one-of-a-kind experience. Installation included 42,500 LF of underground conduit, 170,266 LF Feeder wire, 88,140 LF of Branch underground conduit, 48,700 Branch Overhead conduit, 616,818 Branch wire, and 136,451 of Branch cabling. Bergelectric was responsible for all aspects of the electrical installation including fire alarm, Tel-data, security, CCTV, access control, lightning protection, DAS, and audio visual.

PROJECT: Legacy International Center CONTRACTOR: Clark Construction Group – CA, LP OWNER: Morris Cerullo Legacy Center Foundation ARCHITECT: Carrier Johnson PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Set on 18 acres, Legacy features a five-story hotel and spa, a pavilion with a

500-seat theater, a museum, a welcome center with an interactive 18-foot 3D globe and domed motion theater, and unique attractions such as a replica of the Wailing Wall, catacombs, 8,000 sq. ft. of outdoor retail space, an outdoor amphitheater, dancing multicolored fountains, and expansive gardens. The scope of work also included a 115,500-square-foot cast-in-place parking structure and a state-of-the-art central utility plant. Legacy features a host of sustainable features and has achieved LEED Certification. Legacy International Center is poised to change the area’s reputation with its unmatched combination of religious, secular, hospitality, cultural, educational, spa, dining, and retail offerings.

PROJECT: Scripps Medical Center Jefferson CONTRACTOR: McCarthy Building Companies, Inc. OWNER: Scripps Health ARCHITECT: Hanna Gabriel Wells Architects PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This three-story, 86,000 sq. ft., fully built-out medical office building includes a

surgery suite with three general operating rooms, one total joint operating room, two gastrointestinal operating rooms, sixteen patient prep and recovery bays, and an extensive decontamination and sterilization facility. The building is connected via an elevated pedestrian bridge to a four-story, 323-space parking structure that was built simultaneously. While approaching the facility, a striking, curved glass curtainwall system curls outward to embrace each guest walking through the front door. This façade features custom glasswork, decorative metal panels, and striking terracotta tiles. Inside, a complex wood panel ceiling and wall system is punctuated by architectural pendant lights.

PROJECT: Portside Pier CONTRACTOR: Pacific Building Group OWNER: The Brigantine, Inc. ARCHITECT: Tucker Sadler Architects PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The spectacular Portside Pier project includes a 42,000 sq. ft., two-story building

on top of a new pier along San Diego’s waterfront. The project includes six indoor and outdoor dining options and viewing decks. Using BIM 3D modeling while navigating tide charts and utilizing a pulley system, the team set nearly 400 utility sleeves and inserts into submerged concrete, resulting in marine-safe utilities to the building. Some of the $25 million dollar project’s most notable architectural features include curved steel and zinc shingles on a barrel-shaped roof representative of an ocean wave, two stick-framed glass structures stretching 26-feet and 31-feet tall that resemble fishing baskets, a 3,000-pound, three-dimensional octopus wall sculpture and more.

PROJECT: 2100 Kettner CONTRACTOR: Swinerton OWNER: Kilroy Realty Corporation ARCHITECT: Gensler PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Located in the Little Italy neighborhood, this core and shell spec office building

consists of a six-story 260,000 sq. ft. building with two levels below grade parking. The structure is cast-inplace concrete with post-tensioned decks. The exterior skin consists of precast brick panels, aluminum panels, stucco, structural Douglas fir timbers and aluminum soffits. The rooftop amenity spaces consist of a seven-ply cross-laminated timber (CLT) structure surrounded by an outdoor space utilizing a pedestal paver system. Additional amenities include power actuated hardware at all doors and glass entrances, HEPA filtration systems throughout and touchless destination dispatch elevator controls. Swinerton self-performed structural concrete, metal stud & drywall, doors/frames and hardware, CLT mass timber, as well as clean up services. The building is designed to attain coveted LEED Platinum certification.

projects in San Diego County. The design consisted of three main components: the Santa Margarita River Diversion Structure; the Hayburn Pump Station, and the Pendleton to Fallbrook Pipeline. For the Santa Margarita Diversion project, a new structure replaced an existing vertical steel sheet pile weir with a foursection inflatable weir spanning the entire 250-foot width of the river, anchored with a 2-foot-thick concrete slab foundation extending 12 ft. downstream. The new Haybarn Pump Station includes can-type vertical turbine pumps and hydropneumatic tanks designed for high pressures. The Pendleton Pipeline project is a seven-mile pipeline where it will be connected to a new water treatment plant being constructed as the second CUP project.

6.3 miles of underground transmission water main on three bridge spans, associated potable and water services, pressure reducing station, and pavement restoration. Due to the replacement of the water mains on the balance of the project in high traffic areas, poor and contaminated soil conditions, and extensive utility crossings, 85% of the work was performed at night to minimize traffic disruption.

PROJECT: Elvira to Morena Double Track Project CONTRACTOR: Mid-Coast Transit Constructors (MCTC) OWNER: SANDAG ENGINEER: HCR, WSP, BergerABAM, Rick Engineering and Pacific Railway Enterprises PROJECT DESCRIPTION: MCTC, a joint venture between Stacy and Witbeck, Herzog Contracting Corp,

and Skanska used a collaborative delivery method to provide value engineering and constructability input into the design and specifications. The project added 2.6 miles of new double track capability to a critical portion of the 351-mile corridor which hosts commuter rail (Coaster), Amtrak intercity passenger rail, Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railway Company freight rail services, to the critically important LOSSAN corridor by adding a second track and replacing the existing track. The project included major drainage improvements, seven new bridges, 100,000 sq. ft. of retaining wall, and over 7 miles of new track, train communication, and signal improvements.

UNIQUE SMALL PROJECT PROJECT: COVID-19 Alternate Care Facility CONTRACTOR: Herman Construction Group, Inc. OWNER: United States Army Corps of Engineers Architect: KMA Architecture PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Herman Construction Group, Inc. served as the prime contractor to validate the

state of, and repair of, the site’s existing interior features, specifically focusing on life-safety and significantly foiled materials and systems. Each building was approximately 18,000 sq. ft. and was constructed 80 years ago. The building had been vacant for over 25 years with deferred maintenance and deterioration. This design-build renovation project provides a 246-bed buildout to account for greater patient density due to COVID-19 and to serve as a temporary satellite ward for the nearby full-service hospital. Herman Construction validated any existing HVAC systems, outlets, and lighting fixtures for functionality, fire alarm, roof leaks and damage to the existing structure.

PROJECT: Bio-Enhancing Concrete Coastal Star Interlocking Tidal Pool CONTRACTOR: R.E. Staite Engineering, Inc. OWNER: San Diego Unified Port District Architect: ECOncrete, Inc. PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This project enhanced the shoreline by creating an ecological tide pool

habitat for marine life with a contemporary tidal pool system. It consists of modern concrete building blocks of marine eco-infrastructure to stabilize the east slope at two separate locations along Harbor Island and replacing the existing rock slope protection at the toe on the slope with 3.5-ton modules. The project included the relocation of existing slope armor stones, mobilizing the floating derrick barge for transfer of the completed precast units, and placing the (74) modules at the designated sites while simultaneously meeting the challenges of installing the octahedrally shaped, Coastalock system. This novel tidal pool system is comprised of interlocking hollow units, manufactured with bio-enhancing concrete created solely for the purpose of marine habitat.

PROJECT: California Tower Seismic Retrofit CONTRACTOR: Soltek Pacific Construction Company OWNER: City of San Diego Architect: Heritage Architecture & Planning PROJECT DESCRIPTION: All ten floors of the landmark California Tower in Balboa Park were retrofitted to

meet the latest building codes and the State Interior Standards for the treatment of historic buildings. Using state-of-the-art Ground Penetrating Radar to scan the existing concrete, Soltek located and analyzed the existing rebar locations to avoid damaging existing reinforcement and to locate the concrete cores for the new Dywidag anchors. The foundations were excavated 7-feet deep to expose the tower’s columns and install a 3-foot concrete footing between the columns. The new shotcrete was painted with a special plaster mix to match the color of the original 100-year-old plaster. Multiple work activities were performed simultaneously which was challenging in the narrow and limited workspace inside the tower.

PROJECT: Villa La Jolla Emergency Storm Drain Repair CONTRACTOR: TC Construction Company, Inc. OWNER: City of San Diego Design Engineer: Michael Baker International PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This project consisted of a 180” CPM storm drain 35-feet

below ground surface. These drainage systems are responsible for all the La Jolla North/ Torrey Pines storm water flow. The City realized a sinkhole had appeared next to a large apartment complex and its swimming pool. City engineers determined the bottom of the storm drain had completely corroded. A minimal amount of rain during spring of 2021, caused voids to expand and water flows to increase drastically. Due to environmental concerns, the project’s only access was through a 35-feet deep access manway, 36 inches in diameter. The team collectively decided re-lining the existing 180” CMP with shotcrete and rebar for 250 linear feet would be best for a successful repair.

UNIQUE SMALL PROJECT PROJECT: Balboa Park Auto Museum Restoration CONTRACTOR: Barnhart-Reese Construction, Inc. OWNER: City of San Diego Parks & Recreation/ San Diego Automotive Museum Architect: Robert Thiele PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The Balboa Park Committee had been tasked with preserving Balboa Park’s

historic architecture, gardens, and public, spaces, which is home to the Mid-City Gymnasium and California State Building, currently housing the San Diego Auto Museum. At the 1935 California Pacific International Exposition, the building’s exterior featured four large murals which were the work of Hollywood set designer and art director. The murals represented commerce, industry, agriculture, and the scenic beauty and wonders of California. Over the years, the building did not fare well, and fell into disrepair. The goal was to replace this missing ornamentation with permanent materials and install one-of-a-kind tiles to recreate the Mayan inspired ornamentation to restore the original building architecture.

PROJECT: Mingei International Museum CONTRACTOR: Bergelectric OWNER: Mingei International Museum ARCHITECT: LUCE et Studio Architects, Inc. PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The Mingei International Museum is a captivating new museum of over 50,000

sq. ft. that included adding 10,000 square feet to exhibition and programming space, a new theater, education center, bistro, store, and coffee bar. Bergelectric installed more than 1,000 light fixtures with 30 different specific types. The entire ceiling of one level was designed based on an old-fashioned musical box that featured a complete song with its lyrical notes. Berg’s team had to install the light fixtures to match the timing of the notes as the lights were asymmetrical. In addition, the fixtures were fabricated based on authentic early 20th century design that was installed in the original building.

PROJECT: Design-Build Palomar Emergency Field Hospital CONTRACTOR: Herman Construction Group, Inc. OWNER: Palomar Health Architect/Designer: SC Engineers PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This fast-track 203-bed buildout of COVID-19 emergency response field hospitals

and surge hospitals was completed in two weeks. This project included retrofit of two floors and each floor was approximately 24,000 sq. ft. of vacant space. These areas were being prepared to respond to potential overcrowding from the COVID-19 pandemic complete with fire/life safety systems, lighting, and drywall without finish materials. Scope included site work, lighting, moisture protection, doors, plumbing, HVAC, and fire protection. This involved installation of eight packaged rooftop units, exhaust fans, new restrooms, structural upgrades, lighting, and power throughout the space. The team worked within a seven-day work week to expand San Diego county’s emergency field hospital bed capacity.

PROJECT: Hotel Del Coronado Laundry Building CONTRACTOR: Swinerton OWNER: BRE Resorts Architect: OBR Architecture PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The Laundry Building is a one-story brick building built in 1919 that serviced the

laundry needs of both hotel guests and island residents for over a century. This historic building was renovated and repurposed to curate and preserve the historical character of the Hotel Del. The renovation included the restoration of the brick façade, full interior remodel including offices, new mechanical, plumbing, and electrical systems, restoration of the interior historic wood floors, restoration of the historic original double hung windows, new roofing, and major structural upgrades. The vision for its future is an event space for dinners, meetings, and wedding receptions.

PROJECT: Sumner Hall Auditorium Hardscape Repair CONTRACTOR: TC Construction Company, Inc. OWNER: UC San Diego ENGINEER: West Coast Civil PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This project is identified as a historical site and consisted of

replacement and upgrade of existing cracked hardscape, stairs, ramps, and deteriorated handrails to comply with the State and Federal American with Disabilities Act Standards. The scope of work included improvements of a failing drainage system which caused flooding issues at Sumner Auditorium. TC Construction discovered numerous unknown utilities, sinkholes, and compromised below grade structural building components that had to be repaired, and chipped out all spalling concrete to sound concrete, cleaned and coated rusted rebar, and patched spalling beams and columns. Due to the historic nature of the project, documentation had to be checked to evaluate the building’s historic character and assess architectural integrity and physical condition prior to performing the repair work.

SUSTAINABLE PROJECT PROJECT: UC San Diego Center for Coastal Studies Renovation CONTRACTOR: PCL Construction Services, Inc. OWNER: UC San Diego/ Scripps Institute of Oceanography Architect: Miller Hull PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The Coastal Studies Renovation project is located on

UC San Diego’s Scripps Institution of Oceanography campus. The original concrete structure was built as a saltwater storage tank in the 1940s before being converted into offices in 1962. The scope of work involved renovating the lower two floors of the concrete structure and replacing the third (top) floor with new wood framed construction. The renovation provides additional office space for researchers, students, and administrative staff for the Integrative Ocean Division. The Center for Coastal Studies location is relevant to its research focus: coastal erosion and sea-level rise due to climate change.

UNIQUE SPECIAL PROJECT PROJECT: Renovation of Historic Building 158 CONTRACTOR: Barnhart-Reese Construction, Inc. OWNER: NAVFAC Southwest, FEAD Point Loma Architect: Delawie PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The $7.6 million project encompassed renovating Building 158 into a two-story

11,884 sq. ft. space with a basement suitable for administration services and training. The scope included demolition to cut openings for completion of a seismic retrofit, and installation of an elevator and ramp to bring the building into ADA compliance; constructing walls throughout all three floors to enclose offices, interview rooms, an evidence room, locker rooms, storage areas, and classrooms. The project included construction of new interior partitions, all new HVAC, plumbing, electrical, communications, fire alarm and fire sprinkler systems. Exterior improvements included landscaping and hardscaping, emergency generator, and paving. Also, part of the project included the demolition of a 61,335 sq. ft. building in preparation for a future parking lot.

UNIQUE SPECIAL PROJECT PROJECT: Coast Air Center Development CONTRACTOR: C&S Construction Services OWNER: Coast Air Center / City of San Diego Airport Division ARCHITECT: Delawie PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This project utilized an integrated project delivery

method and included all new infrastructure, a fuel facility, and multiple commercial buildings. The build included three new pre-engineered metal buildings amounting to 84,000 sq. ft. for office space, a flight school, and a mechanical fueling system. The scope of work included design and construction starting with demolition of the old facilities, adding all new underground infrastructure/ utilities, and constructing several new facilities on a 9-acre parcel development. A key aspect is the new flight school within the facility, which will have cutting-edge technology for training future airline pilots and aviators. This facility will also conduct routine maintenance on the corporate and flight school aircraft.

UNIQUE SPECIAL PROJECT PROJECT: I-5 Switch Station CONTRACTOR: Dynalectric Company OWNER: UCSD Capital Program Improvements Architect: HGC Architects PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The scope of work consisted of new construction of a 3,500 sq. ft. concrete

building with total electrical, fire alarm, telecom systems. New underground storm drain, sewer, and water were also included in the project. The Station contains 12 KV switchgear, underground duct banks and cables, and a SCADA system that enhances the efficiency of the university’s energy system. The actual structure included the 17-section medium voltage metal clad switchgear unit with an underground tunnel receiving 42 six-inch ducts each filled with 750kcmil 15KV conductors. The project required numerous shutdowns to energize the new Interstate 5 (I-5) Switch Station and to switch loads on the campus from the Revelle Switch Station and the East Campus Main Substation to the I-5 Switch Station.

UNIQUE SPECIAL PROJECT PROJECT: North Coast Corridor Segment 8 San Elijo Lagoon Restoration CONTRACTOR: Flatiron-Skanska-Stacy & Witbeck, a Joint Venture OWNER: Caltrans Architect: Moffatt & Nichol PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The San Elijo Lagoon was designated impaired under Section 303(d) of the Clean

Water Act for levels of sediment, nutrients, and bacteria caused by development. The team excavated and dredged 474,000 cubic yards of beach-quality sand from the lagoon to form a 45-foot-deep overdredge pit. Crews placed the sand at Cardiff State Beach and Fletcher Cove as beach replenishment, then dredged 633,000 cubic yards of sediment from the lagoon, placed much of it into the overdredge pit, and capped the pit with sand. The restoration improved tidal flow, enhanced wetland habitat, and provided new trail connections for public use. Additional work also included constructing two pedestrian bridges within the central basin of the lagoon, rock slope protection, and planting more than 50,000 plants.

PROJECT: P-440 Pier 8 Replacement Naval Base San Diego CONTRACTOR: Manson Construction Co. OWNER: NAVFAC Southwest Architect: WSP USA PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This 70-year-old 106,194 sq. ft. pier was replaced with a new single-deck general

purpose berthing pier. The new pier is 76% larger at 187,200 sq. ft. and consists of 549, 24-in. prestressed octagonal concrete piles supporting a concrete superstructure consisting of more than 17,000 cubic yards of cast-in-place concrete. The new pier includes capacity for a 181-metric ton crane, fenders, loadout ramp cradles at quay wall, upgraded steam system, and utilities including electrical, potable water, sanitary sewer, and oily waste. Additional work included pile foundation, quay wall modifications, underground electrical utilities, switching station, distribution systems, telephone, coaxial and fiber optic communications, supervisory control and data acquisitions systems, and fire alarm system. Anti-terrorism/Force protection included security crash gate and fencing, watch tower, guard house, and high mast lighting.

UNIQUE SPECIAL PROJECT PROJECT: Scripps La Jolla Parking Structure D CONTRACTOR: McCarthy Building Companies OWNER: Scripps Health ARCHITECT: International Parking Design, Inc. PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This new, six-level parking structure provides hospital patients and staff with

2,001 parking spaces spread across four bays, encompassing a total of a 641,137 sq. ft. structure. Structure D was designed to serve as the new “front door” for the Scripps Health La Jolla Campus. One of the most iconic features of the structure is the 200-foot cantilever walkway that connects to an existing medical office building. This walkway was custom built with a glass railing system that contains a glass-backed elevator/ stair tower, and LED lighting at the base, allowing the hospital to change the colors of their “front door” by displaying different colors, calling attention to different events or holidays as needed.

UNIQUE SPECIAL PROJECT PROJECT: Civic Theater Water Line EMR CONTRACTOR: TC Construction Company, Inc. OWNER: City of San Diego ENGINEER: City of San Diego PROJECT DESCRIPTION: There was an immediate need for a new water main installation in the basement of the Civic Theater, Golden Hall, and City Hall. The existing water main that was installed in 1964 had reached its operating life span and the City had been fighting water leak after mainline breaks. Approximately, 1500 ft. of 2”- 8” CPVC SCH80 water main, 4”- 8” Gate Valves, 1 1/2”- 4” Water Services and 1” Blow Offs in the ceiling basement of the Civic Theatre, Golden Hall & City Hall had to be installed. TC had to core drill multiple locations to make water main install possible. Elevations of the water main had to be changed multiple times to accommodate existing utilities.
