POSITION General Manager Located on the shores of Lough Lein, Hotel Europe is one of Ireland’s finest five-star hotels. The resort is set in 30 acres of landscaped grounds, and boasts views over Kerry’s famous McGillycuddy Reeks mountain range. The outstanding facilities include luxurious rooms, two restaurants specialising in high quality locally sourced food, business and conference suites, and ESPA at The Europe, a 50,000 square foot spa and leisure complex within the hotel. ESPA itself features a 20m ‘lapping’ pool, 3 outdoor pools, 16 treatment rooms, a private suite designed for couples with 2 treatment beds, double Jacuzzi and a private sauna overlooking Lough Lein. In addition, the resort is ideally situated for outdoor activities, with easy access to numerous local golf and fishing clubs. The Europe Hotel and Resort has naturally earned a

Such a prestigious venue requires a dedicated team and a first class ‘behind the scenes’ operation to ensure that its discerning guests receive the level of luxury and standards of service that they demand. With 188 rooms, 44 suites, two restaurants and a spa to support, the resort’s laundry room is a key part of that operation. Reliable, efficient equipment and a dependable fuel supply are therefore essential, as General Manager Michael Brennan explains. ‘We are running an essential service, so first and foremost we have to have equipment that performs, both in terms of time and running costs,’ he says. ‘There’s a constant demand for clean, fresh towels and robes that has to be met, without fail.’

ESPA 50,000 sq ft spa and leisure complex requires a plentiful supply of clean towels and robes.

The ideal laundry solution – Calor Gas and Miele dryers The hotel was using four electrically-powered commercial dryers, which were proving costly – and, says former Director Hans Brunner, resulting in a lengthy turnaround time. ‘As part of our planned review of laundry services, we took the opportunity to examine our running costs and identified that gas-powered drying equipment offered clear benefits,’ he adds. 1

Calor and Miele provide the solution From the brief provided by Hans and Michael, Miele and Calor worked as an integral part of the project team. The agreed specification saw four gas-powered Miele commercial tumble dryers installed, each with a maximum 40kg capacity. These proved an attractive option as gas tumble dryers are typically up to 50 per cent cheaper than equivalent electric models to operate. The Miele gas dryers achieve higher temperatures more quickly, and are more fuel efficient. Miele Troctronic and Profitronic M controls provide intelligent control reducing drying time and producing savings. The dryers’ air recycling systems reuse around 60 per cent of heated exhaust air back into the drying cycle, while Miele’s patented Honeycomb Drum system uses an axial air current, allowing the laundry to float on a cushion of warmed air as it dries, producing less creasing.

Hans and Michael consulted with Calor’s Area Sales Manager Colm Daly and Miele’s Professional Sales Division to design the right solution. The team proved to be a powerful partnership between one of Europe’s most recognised equipment manufacturers and Ireland’s leading provider of cleaner burning LPG. ‘From our experience in the hospitality sector, we understand that the Europe Hotel and Resort’s guests expect nothing but the best – clean laundry is a given in a five star hotel,’ says Calor’s Colm Daly. ‘We got straight to work to specify the optimum solution.’

Calor’s experience and expertise delivered the specification for a clean, reliable and cost effective fuel supply to power the new system. Two bulk Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) tanks were installed,

one with a capacity of 1,000kg and the other with a capacity of 600kg. The tanks are linked together in a dedicated fuel compound and fitted with Calor’s automated telemetry system, which monitors fuel levels and communicates with Calor to ensure accurate and regular LPG delivery – ensuring that the resort maintains a plentiful supply of fuel.

Efficiency and cost savings

CALOR LPG – A BETTER CHOICE • Kinder to the environment – LPG is a lower carbon fuel

The Europe Hotel and Resort’s laundry room is working at optimum efficiency and has seen real savings. ‘We’re delighted with the new system,’ says Michael. ‘It has met our requirement, and Calor’s obvious expertise gave us peace of mind throughout the project.’ Indicative figures from Calor Gas show huge savings on running costs and CO2 emissions can be made when switching from commercial electric dryers to gas-powered dryers. Based on a Miele 32-40kg load capacity dryer and comparing running costs with the equivalent electric dryer, it costs over 50% less to run and reduces CO2 emissions by over 50%. (Figures based on ESB Small & Medium Enterprises Tariff – effective 1st May 2009. CO2 emissions supplied by SEI: Electricity – 542.8, LPG – 229.3)
