Only gas could provide the cook quality and precise control that his kitchen demands – and that meant Calor LPG. ‘We have a busy kitchen that has to cater for up to 100 people at a time, placing a variety of orders. So our equipment is in constant use but needs to respond quickly to customer demand at short notice,’ he says. ‘Only LPG would give us that flexibility and the results that our customers expect from the kitchen, but we also wanted to explore our heating options, so it made sense to talk with the leading supplier.’ Calor’s Area Sales Representative Carl Monteith met with Peter to talk through his requirements, which

Catering, water heating and underfloor heating ranged from catering to heating. ‘It was clear that The Nook had built up a successful business through quality catering and the unique atmosphere of a special building,’ says Carl. ‘That winning combination had to be maintained, not only in providing power for
Following installation, Calor LPG now provides the full package. The Nook Restaurant’s two fryers, hotplate and Blue Seal six-ring hob with convection oven are all powered by LPG, while the water heaters provide the kitchen and the customer washrooms with plentiful hot water on demand. The underfloor heating system, also powered by Calor LPG, provides reliable, even heat that maintains the traditional features of the building and is impressively economical: using such a system can achieve energy savings of up to 40%. The Nook Restaurant’s catering and heating is supplied from two one-tonne LPG bulk tanks situated away from the main building but allowing easy access for refuelling.
With no radiators to detract from the original Victorian features, the underfloor heating keeps The Nook Restaurant warm all year round.
the kitchen, but also plentiful hot water and a heating system that wouldn’t impact on the character of the building’.
Calor Provides the Full Package Calor’s solution was to recommend the installation of LPG powered continuous flow water heaters and an underfloor heating system. The Nook was keen to avoid the use of radiators, as these would detract from the original Victorian features of open fires as well as taking up wall space and providing only localised heat. Underfloor heating, by contrast, requires a lower operating temperature and provides an even distribution of heat, literally from the ground up.
Two one-tonne underground bulk tanks provide all of the Calor LPG for the busy kitchen, water heating and underfloor heating.
All in all, Peter Kane confirms that he is impressed with the results. ‘Thanks to Calor’s expertise we’re benefiting from reliable, controllable energy in the kitchen and economical heating that has kept the character of the Victorian building. We’re looking forward to welcoming many more visitors to enjoy the unique atmosphere of The Giant’s Causeway and our own hospitality.’
