BUSINESS
Kelly’s Resort
NAME
Bill Kelly
Bill Kelly, great-grandson of founder William J. Kelly, has run the resort with his wife Isabelle since 1987. The couple have overseen several key developments, including the Aqua Club Leisure Centre, La Marine Bar and Restaurant, the modernisation of all bedrooms, the redevelopment of all ground floor areas and the creation of the SeaSpa. From the outset, Bill has been keen to minimise environmental impact and improve energy efficiency. Woodchip-powered heating in the hotel and LPG-powered laundry, leisure and catering facilities prove that a total energy management approach can be successful and rewarding. Kelly’s Hotel reduced its carbon footprint by 250 tonnes a year. As part of a wide ranging review of energy use, Bill and his team, in particular Head of Maintenance, Barry O’Neill and Financial Controller, John Lambert, identified that the hotel’s laundry room was a prime candidate for enhanced efficiency.
POSITION Owner Kelly’s Resort Hotel and Spa is situated alongside five miles of beach in Rosslare in the ‘sunny southeast’ of Ireland, a location that enjoys the country’s best weather. The resort has been a family run business for four generations since being established by William J. Kelly in 1895, and boasts an impressive list of luxurious facilities. In addition to 118 rooms and suites, the resort offers indoor and outdoor swimming pools, tennis courts, childrens’ play areas, bowls, croquet, badminton and snooker, as well as three restaurants, two bars and a hair salon. The resort’s Aqua Club offers steam rooms, sauna and outdoor hot tub, while the SeaSpa provides a wide range of relaxing treatments. The resort has earned an impressive array of hospitality accolades, including two AA Rosettes and a listing in the BBC’s Top Ten Family Resorts in the World.

Calor Gas powered Miele dryers – the ideal laundry solution ‘Since we developed the spa, we have seen a major increase in the use of towels and bathrobes,’ said Barry. ‘These heavier items when washed take longer to dry and we were seeing a significant increase in electricity costs as well as the impact on the environment. We decided that we had to examine more efficient and responsible means of drying laundry.’
Calor and Miele provide the solution Having agreed that gas power was the preferred option, the team was now keen to identify a fuel supplier who could deliver the right specification and a reliable fuel supply; Calor was the natural choice and Local Sales Representative Damien Whelan was appointed to the project team. ‘Working with the Miele team, we established the predicted gas usage and specified the required tank and fuel supply system to ensure a plentiful supply.’ Calor installed three bulk LPG tanks, each with a capacity of four tonnes, to provide the resort’s laundry room with LPG. To ensure a continuous fuel supply, were fitted with an automated telemetry system, which monitors fuel levels and communicates with Calor to provide accurate and regular LPG delivery – ensuring that the resort maintains a plentiful supply of fuel.

The team consulted Miele, one of Europe’s most recognised equipment manufacturers, with proven expertise in the commercial laundry sector. A representative from Miele’s Professional Sales Division met with the team and, based on the volumes outlined, quickly identified gas-powered dryers as the preferred option. ‘Running costs for gas models are substantially less compared to electric dryers, with savings of over 50 per cent. They can run at higher temperatures for longer, and reach optimum temperature more quickly. They also require less maintenance.’ The team opted for three Miele gas-powered dryers and a Miele rotary iron.

Efficiency and cost savings Following the installation of the Calor Gas powered system, the laundry room at Kelly’s Resort Hotel and Spa has reduced its running costs and is doing its bit for the environment, using cleaner burning LPG and seeing increased fuel efficiency. ‘We’ve been impressed with the results,’ says Barry O’Neill. ‘The gas-powered equipment is delivering on all of its promises, with faster drying time and reduced fuel usage. The automated telemetry system means that we don’t worry about disruption to the gas supply – and, most important of all, our guests have the clean, fresh laundry that they expect in an establishment of this standard.’ Indicative figures from Calor Gas show huge savings on running costs and CO2 emissions can be made when switching from commercial electric dryers to gaspowered dryers. Based on a Miele 32-40kg load capacity dryer and comparing running costs with the equivalent electric dryer, it costs over 50% less to run and reduces CO2 emissions by over 50%. (Figures based on ESB Small & Medium Enterprises Tariff – effective 1st May 2009. CO2 emissions supplied by SEI: Electricity – 542.8, LPG – 229.3)
