OUR PHILOSOPHY There was a farmer who grew excellent quality corn. Every year, he won the award for the best grown corn. One year a newspaper reporter interviewed him and learned something interesting about how he grew it. The reporter discovered that the farmer shared his seed corn with his neighbors. “How can you afford to share your best seed corn with your neighbors when they are entering corn in competition with yours each year?” the reporter asked. “Why sir,” said the farmer, “Didn’t you know? The wind picks up pollen from the ripening corn and swirls it from field to field. If my neighbors grow inferior corn, crosspollination will steadily degrade the quality of my corn. If I am to grow good corn, I must help my neighbors grow good corn.” So is with our lives... Those who want to live meaningfully and well must help enrich the lives of others, for the value of a life is measured by the lives it touches. And those who choose to be happy must help others find happiness, for the welfare of each is bound up with the welfare of all. ~ Author Unknown ~

Call it power of collectivity. Call it a principle of success. Call it a law of life. The fact is, none of us truly wins, until we all win!

One gives freely, yet grows all the richer; another withholds what he should give, and only suffers want. Whoever brings blessing will be enriched, and one who waters will himself be watered. ~ Proverbs 11:24-25 ~

Blake with his parents, Jessica and Ryan, at the 2019 State Competition when he was awarded with the 2nd Place Agricultural Proficiency Award in AG Mechanics Repair and Maintenance

BLAKE ELDEEN Parker High School senior Blake Eldeen has been involved in FFA for six years. “When I was in 6th grade, we had a group of FFA officers come and talk to our class about the different opportunities such as meeting new people, exploring new places, and developing leadership skills that are part of FFA. That all sounded like something I wanted to do,” he says. Through FFA, Blake has had

the opportunity to meet people from many chapters in several other states as well as developing relationships with people in his community. His goal in FFA has been to develop leadership skills necessary for his career choice to help run the family’s HVAC business, Ryan’s Heating and Cooling. Blake lives in rural Parker with his parents, Ryan and Jessica, and his siblings, Parker, Hannah,

Hudson, and Madalyn. This spring, the family sold their farm and built a house in a rural development just outside of Parker. He designed most of the house with the help of his father and assisted in many of the building aspects of the house. They are now building another house in the same development, and he has already logged approximately 200 hours in the building of the new house. “I enjoy working with my dad

and mom—whether it is doing HVAC or building a house. The satisfaction of being able to see a house plan come together is what motivates me to continue working hard at what I do,” he shares. Blake Olson, a Parker High School alumnus who graduated last year, left a lasting impression on Blake through his dedication to FFA as a member and officer as well as his involvement in the community in general. “He was always striving to do things better or to help others,” says Blake. Blake also enjoys being involved in community activities such as Parker’s Hometown Christmas event, preparing a float for the homecoming parade, serving meals to community members on Veteran’s Day and holding pancake feeds during National FFA Week. His favorite FFA activity is helping to run the animal nursery during the Turner County Fair. “We get to help educate people—especially young kids—about different animals we have there,” he adds. “It’s really cool to see how excited the kids get when meeting the animals—especially all the puppies.” In addition to FFA, Blake is in his 13th season of wrestling, and he says the Parker team is the best it has ever been. He has been involved with his youth group for three years and has joined them on two mission trips. He has also been in high school choir for four years.

Blake says FFA teaches many social skills such as public speaking and good communication skills which help build confidence, gain work ethic and instill good sportsmanship. He adds, “The life skills I’ve learned such as organizational skills and time management and problem-solving skills will be beneficial in my adult life as well as assist me in helping to run the family business.”

YOUTH IN AG

TJ BIGGE Current SDSU student and Parkston High School graduate, TJ Bigge, is a great example of how FFA can provide direction and guidance for students. The SDSU sophomore is majoring in Agricultural Education with a minor in Leadership. His long-term plan is to become an Ag Educator somewhere in South Dakota and help kids discover a passion for agriculture. TJ’s positive experience taking Ag classes at Parkston High School sparked his interest in pursuing a career in Ag Education. He credits Jacob Englin, Parkston Agriculture teacher and FFA Advisor, as a great influence. “Mr. Englin is a fantastic teacher. He was hired to revive the FFA program that had been on hiatus for so long, and he did an amazing job of it. He was a great coach, helping several teams along to the national level competitions. He was also a great teacher who gave us content that was exciting to learn while also being immediately applicable to our lives,” explains TJ. TJ grew up on an acreage near Parkston and was exposed to agriculture through 4-H, but his interest in agriculture accelerated even more when he got involved in FFA. “Through FFA, I learned just how much agriculture impacts our society. Before I joined, I’d never really thought about it. After a few years, though, I could look and see how agriculture is the backbone of our society and our economy,” says TJ. “I also learned how uninformed some people are about the purpose of agriculture. We’ve all heard of the ‘Brown Cows making Chocolate Milk’ jokes, but there are real people out there who believe that is a fact. It’s our job as leaders in Agriculture to help guide these people to the truth and to replace these myths with facts instead.”

skills and obtain knowledge through the program. “The thing I enjoyed the most about FFA was the number of new things to do and learn. Contests like Milk Quality and Products, Veterinary Science, Ag Broadcasting, and Prepared Public Speaking all have such different knowledge and skills required of them, learning how to compete in each one was a challenge for sure, but also a really good time,” says TJ. The message TJ shares with other kids who are contemplating pursuing Ag classes and FFA is simple. “I would ask them if they’ve ever heard of the Dr. Seuss book Oh, The Places You’ll Go. FFA really is your ticket to so many new and exciting experiences. Whether you want to be a better agriculturalist, learn more about a specific topic, or network and meet new people, FFA can help you do all these things. Also, it’s fun! You can catch up with your friends from around the state at competitions as well as meet new people. Also, gathering almost 2,000 kids in Brookings for State Convention is such a high-energy and exciting experience that you won’t soon forget!”

KEEPING LOCAL HISTORY ALIVE

HISTORY OF FFA

Photos courtesy of Russ Swanson, FFA Advisor at Canton School District and Kelly Dunkelberger, FFA Advisor at Parker School District, unless noted otherwise

Today, many educators, as well as more well-known individuals like Mike Rowe, host of the television show Dirty Jobs, champion a movement to dedicate a higher focus on teaching students trade skills in a high school setting. The challenge with providing every student the best path for the future is nothing new. Dating back to the early 1900s, the educational needs of students varied geographically all over the country. The overall teaching structure did not provide much practical use for students. This was a significant problem— especially for students in rural areas. At the time, approximately three-quarters of Americans lived in rural areas, and the classic educational approach simply did not address the needs of those rural populations. In 1908, few students pursued an education past the 8th grade. In 1917, the Smith-Hughes Act was passed which provided federal funding for education

for agriculture, home economics and trades. This was the first time there was a path for a cohesive national approach to educate students—specifically with an agriculture and technical focus— in the United States. The act allowed schooling to be more interesting and applied, and therefore, more students graduated high school. Today, 93 percent of high school students are exposed to CTE (career and technical education) thanks to the passing of the Smith-Hughes Act, according to an Association for Career and Technical Education fact sheet. The act was responsible for hiring federal supervisors who were instrumental in creating the FFA.

This new curriculum inspired several agriculture teachers in Virginia to start a youth organization that promoted and supported agricultural education. In 1925, they founded Future Farmers of Virginia (FFV). This organization paved the way for the national organization: Future Farmers of America (FFA). After the Virginia organization was established, FFA chapters started to sprout up across the country, including South Dakota. The South Dakota FFA Chapter was founded in Canton in 1930. Today, there are 91 chapters across the state and over 8,600 chapters around the country. Nationally, more than 700,000 students participate in FFA.

Old picture of the Canton FFA Chapter with long-time advisor, Mr. Bryant. Canton was the first chapter in S.D., and current advisor Russ Swanson’s great uncle Raymond was a charter member.

FFA is not only for students who want to be production farmers; FFA also welcomes members who want to pursue careers as teachers, doctors, scientists, business owners and more. The diversity of the FFA curriculum meets the need to prepare students for more than 300 career opportunities in the fiber, food and natural resources industries.

SERVING SOUTH DAKOTA FROM SOUTH DAKOTA SINCE 1916

Saturday) was designated as National FFA Week. Chapters across the country conduct a variety of activities and community fundraisers to promote FFA and help other students and communities learn about FFA and Ag education. In the past, South Dakota chapters have held pancake feeds, canned food drives and organized animal nurseries for younger students.

FFA continues to strongly impact many students by actively teaching them a variety of skills and life lessons and instilling confidence to prepare them for the future—in their careers and life. The FFA Mission is to make a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth, and career success through agricultural education.

South Dakota’s FFA Advisors and Ag educators share the mission to promote agriculture and are making a difference in students’ lives every day. Those students pursue opportunities that positively impact our state and country through their passion for agriculture.

YOUTH IN AG

DALTON LARSON Dalton Larson, a sophomore at South Dakota State University, remains active in FFA. He joined as a freshman at West Central High School and says he was surprised at the time the organization had so many opportunities for leadership development. Those opportunities lead him to several leadership roles. During his high school years, he served as chapter president and treasurer then as South Dakota FFA president from 2017-2018 as a freshman at SDSU. FFA is something that Dalton’s family has been involved in for a long time. “I had watched my older brother and sister go through the organization and witnessed the immense change in leadership qualities they underwent,” shares Dalton. “I also watched my mom give tirelessly to the organization doing all she could to see not only her own children but every FFA member she came across succeed.” Dalton grew up on his family’s cow-calf and row crop farm in Hartford, where he helped with a variety of chores that gave him hands-on experience in agriculture. His Supervised Agricultural Experience consisted of spending his time outside of the classroom working on the family farm. As Dalton pursues a degree in Agricultural Business, he serves as an advocate for FFA. “FFA is more than just an organization focused on the basics of agriculture; it actually has many opportunities for professional development that can help anyone in any profession,” he explains. “I am hoping to become an agricultural salesman in the future because I enjoy working with agriculturalists to meet

their needs and help the Ag community grow.” “FFA has changed in many ways over the years,” says Dalton. “Currently, the FFA’s main focus is telling the true story of agricultural while also helping students develop professional skills that many companies are looking for.” Dalton shares that his time in the classroom, at competitions,

and working on his Supervised Agricultural Experiences helped him develop skills that are extremely unique to the career he plans to pursue. “I learned the strength in knowledge from my time in the classroom, the value of hard work in my SAE and where I plan to take my career from the FFA Career Development Events,” he adds. “The FFA is an extension of my family that I will always cherish and be proud of.”

De Smet Farm Mutual Insurance of South Dakota home office in De Smet, SD

DE SMET FARM MUTUAL De Smet Farm Mutual Insurance Company of South Dakota, originally named Farmers Tornado Insurance Company, has been providing insurance coverage for the people of South Dakota since 1916.

De Smet Farm Mutual Insurance Company, located in De Smet, S.D., was formed by nine farmers from eastern South Dakota at a time when the large, wellestablished insurance companies weren’t interested in coming to the prairies of South Dakota to write insurance. “They recognized a need for a company to insure farm buildings and farm personal property for windstorm and hail that the large Midwest companies on the East and West Coasts weren’t interested in providing,” said retired General Manager Bill Poppen. “So, they took matters into their own hands and formed a mutual company, which means the company is owned by the policyholders.” As rural life in South Dakota improved, outside insurance

companies wanted to grow their business in South Dakota. Since that time, many of those insurance companies have come and gone—depending on the fortunes of a rural state like South Dakota. However, De Smet Farm Mutual Insurance Company of South Dakota remains committed to South Dakotans—the Company formed by South Dakotans to serve South Dakota from South Dakota. De Smet Farm Mutual’s location and name changed over the years. By 1943, it was in the basement of the Warren-Eggen building where Purintun Abstract is now located. In the early 1950s, they moved across the alley east on Second Street where Dr. Louis Karlen had his office for many years. In 1971, the Company was

YOUTH IN AG

CLAYTON SORUM Canton High School graduate and current SDSU student Clayton Sorum has farming in his DNA. 150 years ago, Clayton’s greatgreat grandfather homesteaded where he grew up. The living room of that house was the original log cabin his greatgreat grandfather built. One day, Clayton will likely take over the farm, but for now, Clayton is pursuing a degree in Agricultural Education with the goal of teaching and coaching at a high school level. Clayton first got exposed to Ag education in the 8th grade in an Intro to Ag class. “I was in the shop working with Canton’s Ag Teacher, Russ Swanson, when he

26

asked me if I was going to join FFA. From there, I took Freshman Agriculture, and I have been hooked ever since,” explains Clayton. Mr. Swanson has made a positive impact on Clayton and other students at Canton. “Russ is constantly bringing in new activities and ideas to the classroom—keeping the content of his course up-to-date to what’s going on in the industry. Students leave his class smarter than when they come in. Anyone that knows Russ knows he is a practical jokester and loves to have a good laugh. Whether it was your average day in class or a long road trip out to a contest,

he knows how to add so much more fun to a student’s FFA experience,” shares Clayton. While in FFA in Canton, Clayton was a Chapter Officer 3 times, lead over 50 teaching workshops to other students and presented 10 keynote speeches at various events. Clayton also had the opportunity to lobby for legislation that impacted FFA and its members in Washington, D.C. One of Clayton’s proudest accomplishments within FFA was being named a South Dakota FFA National Officer Candidate (2018, 2019) where he represented South Dakota as one of the 43 FFA members that run for the

YOU LOOK TOUGH By Ruth Buchmann, Hutchinson County resident

“You okay? You look tough.” Those were not the words I longed to hear my husband say as he brushed a goodbye kiss across my forehead one fall morning. Ruth Buchmann

“I’m fine, just tired.” It was all I could trust myself to say as he rushed out the door to his combine. I felt tough, and his comment only confirmed what I already dreaded. I look tough. I didn’t have the energy, and my husband didn’t have the time to listen to why his wife is looking Age Media Qtr Page Color 1-8-20.pdf 1 1/8/2020 11:21:34 AM haggard. It could be because

I haven’t had an actual night’s sleep in a few weeks due to kids’ coughs echoing through our heat vents; now that I’m coughing, I don’t foresee my sleep situation improving any time soon. Perhaps it is because my farmer is stressed with uncooperative conditions and machinery, and like a good helpmate, I am picking up his extra stress. Maybe it is because I haven’t had an adult conversation with my spouse since September, unless I count the half of a round I rode in the combine with him before it started to rain. Another possibility is my hair hasn’t been washed in awhile, nor has it been cut and cared for like it should since harvest trumped my last two hair appointments.

I’m not alone. One doesn’t have to look far to see another shadow of a woman staggering through her day as she works to help her farming husband. But, when she is asked how she is doing, the safe response is, “I’m fine, just tired.”

I know women have been doing this farmer’s-wife thing for years. As a farmer’s daughter, I watched my mom raise five kids while running the dairy barn so Dad could grow the corn, beans, and stock cattle. Now, with four kids of my own, I’m amazed at my mom’s fortitude and sanity, and I wonder if I will have any sanity left come Christmas. I am blessed to be a stay-at-home mom serving my favorite people, but any proof of my day’s efforts are eaten, dirtied, or thrown in a hamper. Sometimes, I jealously struggle that my husband can tally up his day’s achievements in how many acres he combined, what his corn is yielding, and how many cows he got hauled to corn stalks. Moreover, his crops and livestock don’t offer backtalk, question his decisions, or hit their siblings. But, on the bright side, if I look worn and tired, maybe it means my efforts are accomplishing something. So, if you meet me at the grocery store, and I look tough, don’t worry. I’m fine, just tired.
