I’d like to take a moment and recognize a public servant deserving of our appreciation. Michael McMahon, Planning & Zoning Official, was instrumental in completing the grant application that brought $74,000 in state funding to the community in support of the Hugh Robinson Park revitalization project. With the $250,000 total project completed earlier this fall, we hope you can check out the newest destination playground and park in town. New this year to our annual holiday lighting contest will be a “Parade of Lights.” What started out as a fun contest to show holiday spirit amongst neighbors has snowballed (see what I did there…) into one of the most popular winter activities in town! Watch our social media pages and website for more information from the Community Programming team. Being able to refresh your mind and body is imperative to healthy living. What you do with your leisure time should be interesting and enjoyable, too. We have wonderful programs for all ages at the Community Library. From toddler story time to the monthly book club, an engaging opportunity is waiting for you. Be sure to check out the “Explore South Dakota” educational series on Dec. 1, 8, and 15. The Parks Department is also striving to offer more outdoor activities. Coming this winter are guided nature hikes, snowshoeing, and bird watching. While it’s still several months away, you can also expect more recreational programming in the spring. Kickball, disc golf, and guided park play are on the horizon. Don’t worry, we’re bringing back the always popular archery, hatchet throwing, and fishing at Lake Ole. Whatever you choose to do, be sure to ask for some newly branded Parks & Rec swag! JOIN US FOR THE MOST WONDERFUL TIME OF THE YEAR! This afternoon, I opened my mailbox, and what to my wondering eyes would appear but two Christmas catalogs! I’ve also already seen social media posts of Christmas trees adorning friends’ homes, and my own daughter has been jamming out to Christmas carols for a couple of weeks. None of this may seem strange as you’re reading this article in late November, but I’m writing this in the middle of … October!! What is it about this time of year that provokes something in us that we just can’t wait for? Amidst rising inflation and continued supply shortages, I understand why people are getting a jump start on their shopping, but there’s something more at play. Sure, the glow of Christmas lights and the familiar tunes we’ve known since childhood can warm us on a chilly winter day, but I would argue that it’s the traditions and time spent with loved ones that truly makes this the most wonderful time of the year. Speaking of traditions, we’ve got a Chamber activity calendar packed fuller than Santa’s sleigh with opportunities for you to enjoy some familiar traditions and start some new ones. So make your list and check it twice as we invite you to join us for the following events. Shop Small Saturday: This is a nationwide event held the Saturday after Thanksgiving which encourages us to shop small and shop local by supporting the businesses right in our hometown. This year, keep an eye on our Facebook page for details about our Shop Small Saturday Scavenger Hunt. You’ll have an opportunity to visit our Chamber members, check in, and earn the chance to win some fabulous prizes. While you’re stopping in, be sure to thank our local businesses for their investment in our community. They really are the elves bringing magic to our local economy. Harrisburg Hometown Holiday: Over the past four years, this truly has become a wonderful Harrisburg tradition. Join us at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 2, as we welcome Santa to town. We’ll gather down by the picnic shelter at Lake Ole as we await Santa’s arrival, and we’ll help him provide enough Christmas cheer to light the town Christmas tree. Enjoy some hot cocoa and the chance to snag a photo with ol’ St. Nick himself. Harrisburg Chamber’s Annual Meeting: If you’ve been looking for an opportunity to visit the beautiful Meadow Barn, here’s your chance! Join us on Thursday, Dec. 8, for the Chamber’s Annual Meeting. Don’t let the name fool you. It’s not really a meeting; it’s a party! And it’s not just for Chamber 8

NEW CLINIC CARES FOR KIDS AND ADULTS CLOSE TO HOME Receiving care close to home has new

After deciding to transition her family’s care to the Harrisburg clinic, availability was one of Fest’s biggest considerations when choosing a new pediatrician, along with finding a provider with whom her daughter was comfortable. Pediatrician Bianca Johnson, MD, ended up being a perfect fit.

Harrisburg Clinic is now located near her family’s home in Harrisburg. When her 3-year-old daughter, Magnolia, comes down with a cold or cough, it only takes them a few minutes to arrive for their appointment. “Our daycare is across the street from the clinic, so it’s really convenient to pick her up and get care in about 20 minutes,” Fest said. The whole family now visits the Sanford Harrisburg Clinic both for routine and urgent care. “I hop onto My Sanford Chart and am able to make an appointment online without having to wait, so that’s really convenient for us,” she said.

“Dr. Johnson is so good at connecting with Magnolia and always asks her questions about her favorite activities or foods,” said Fest. To establish care with a new pediatrician, Fest let Dr. Johnson know she wanted to change her daughter’s primary care provider. The clinic staff then updated her information in My Sanford Chart. “It was a super easy process,” said Fest. By reestablishing care, Fest has a go-to person for any questions about her daughter’s health. And if her daughter needs specialty care, Dr. Johnson can connect them to the Sanford Children’s Hospital.

CONNECTING THE HARRISBURG COMMUNITY

LOCAL CARE FROM LOCAL DOCTORS The Sanford Harrisburg Clinic is home to three full-time pediatricians: Bianca Johnson, MD, Leah Heidenreich, MD, and Shannon Carruthers, MD. They provide a full range of pediatric care for newborns and children up to age 18, including:

Routine well child visits Care for urgent, chronic and complex conditions Preventive health Sports physicals Vaccinations Parenting education and support The clinic has 26 clinical exam and procedure rooms, housing family medicine, pediatrics, women’s and behavioral health services. Patients can also visit the clinic for labs, X-rays and ultrasounds as well as mammograms on days when the Edith Sanford mammography truck is located at the clinic. “There’s so many things in this clinic that are available to people,” said Fest.

CARE FOR ALL AGES In addition to their daughter, Fest and her husband also get care at the clinic. Currently pregnant with their second child, Fest appreciates being able to do some of her prenatal appointments closer to home in partnership with her OB/GYN in Sioux Falls. “I wanted to finish my pregnancy with the same provider but also use the clinic for smaller visits,” she said. “So being able to see a midwife or an OB/GYN who visit the Harrisburg clinic on certain days of the week has been really nice.”

BOND VOTE PASSES Harrisburg School District voters approved a $30 million bond on Sept. 27. The voter-approved funds will provide for a new elementary school to be located just to the west of South Cliff Avenue in Harrisburg. The new elementary will relieve overcrowding at Liberty Elementary. The resolution also includes site preparation, furniture, roads and parking lots, bus garage, and potential improvements at South Middle School. If bids come in as anticipated, the bond proceeds will be used to also install a track and renovate the cafetorium and kitchen area at SMS.

SERVICE TO OTHERS A CORE VALUE AT THE LESNAR HOME

Service to others and leading by example are core values at the Harrisburg home of Casey and Kelsey Lesnar. Their 7-year-old daughter, Lenora, has been showcasing those values while she wears the crown of Tiny Miss Harrisburg. Lenora has been a vocal cheering section for all things Harrisburg. Through Facebook and other channels, she’s shown a spotlight on events in the city such as the car show, Lava’s Harvest Festival, and the Harrisburg Parks archery basics event. In addition, Lenora teamed up with the community library to collect food for the local food pantry during September’s Hunger Action Month. She and the other Little Miss Harrisburg princesses helped hand out programs and Cracker Jacks at the dedication of Dakota Access Field by the Harrisburg Baseball Association. Plus she recruited some of her friends to help rake leaves during the Active Generations “Rake The Town” event. She’ll also participate in the chamber’s holiday lighting ceremony. Kelsey said, “We normally take part in the events in town and I just thought Lenora’s time as Tiny Miss Harrisburg could be another resource to promote worthwhile causes – someone different to ask for food for the food pantry or people to help rake at the rake-a-thon. Maybe her role can be another way to bring people together.” Lenora is a first grader at Freedom Elementary and will move to Adventure next year as part of the Tiger Reserve program. She’s also involved in ballet, competitive dance, Acro and competitive dance team at Pulse Dance Studio in Harrisburg; and competitive cheer at Dakota Spirit in Sioux Falls. According to Kelsey, “The things she’s done have been pretty simple, but we wanted her experience to be more than just winning the crown and riding in the parade. She’s usually shy, but this involvement has helped her be more vocal and talk to more people.” Lenora has enjoyed doing events with Miss Teen Harrisburg Leia Rombough. Leia recently became Miss Teen South Dakota International 2023. Not to be outdone by her younger sister or her classmate Leia, Kelsey and Casey’s older daughter, Ava, was named Miss Junior Teen South Dakota International 2023. Lenora was first runner-up in the state Little Miss Division. Ava is 14 and a freshman at Harrisburg High School. She’s an THE BRIDGE | WINTER 2022

honor student, plays basketball and runs track. She also works for the WagZone dog walking and let-out service. The job provides flexibility with her sports schedule. Casey said, “If you’re wondering where all the involvement comes from, it’s their mom. I’m not going to take credit.” One of 13

Kelsey’s most important efforts is to give thermal bags to mom’s with children in the newborn intensive care unit (NICU) at Sanford Medical Center. Casey said, “A lot of times you have to haul breast milk from home to the hospital or vice versa; the thermal bags help with that.” Kelsey added, “Or you can use it to bring healthy food from home because you go sit there all day with your baby.” Friends, family and others sponsor one or more bags and then the Lesnar family adds tissues, hand sanitizer, drinks and snacks. Ava and Lenora help their mom shop for the extra goodies, do an assembly line to fill them, and then deliver to Sanford. Over the past two years, they’ve donated about 180 NICU thermal bags The cause is near and dear to their hearts. On July 16, 2020, their sons, Lane and Lex, were born at 26 weeks and weighed only 2 pounds. The boys spent 99 days at the NICU. “When they were born, the babies got hats and blankets. The doctors and nurses often get food catered by families who previously had children there. I thought I should do something for the moms.” Sponsorship of the bags is $25 each. This year, she started a similar fundraiser to give bags to couples who are utilizing the Sanford Fertility Clinic. And, while Lane and Lex were in the hospital, Kelsey was part of a pilot program called 14

the NICU Read-A-Thon, which has since become an ongoing program. When she’s not volunteering, Kelsey works part-time from home in customer service for Premier Bankcard. She started working for Premier soon after she graduated from Sioux Falls Washington 14 years ago. Casey is a pharmacist and the pharmacy manager at Walgreen’s at 26th and Sycamore. He’s a native of Webster and a graduate of South Dakota State University. He stays involved with SDSU by being a preceptor who supervises pharmaceutical interns at Walgreen’s. “My dad told me I was in the wrong kind of farm, being a pharmacist instead of a farmer. When you grow up on a farm, but work indoors for a living, I always want to spend time working with my hands,” he said. Consequently, he used his

construction skills to re-do every room in their 1950’s-era house and, in his free time, fixes up other homes as rentals or to re-sell them. Lane and Lex are thriving and busy 2-year-olds who like being outdoors. They like to chase the kittens with Lenora; love to explore the “forest” with Ava on the family’s acreage; and enjoy going to Harrisburg parks, the library, The Sandlot and Air Madness. “Lex likes to work on his toy cars, he’s go-go-go. But Lane will sit down and read 30 books in a row. They’re opposites,” Kelsey said. //

LOCAL BUSINESS PROFILE | FIEGEN CONSTRUCTION

PRIDE IN THEIR PEOPLE AND SERVICE Driving around the area, it’s a common occurrence to see a Fiegen Construction sign posted near commercial buildings. Several notable projects the company has done include the Sioux Falls Specialty Hospital’s Urgent Care facility on 85th and Minnesota; the Sanford Pentagon and Fieldhouse; and the Dakota Dome remodel along with the Sanford Coyote Sports Center at the University of South Dakota. Closer to home in Harrisburg, Fiegen Construction just finished the new Sanford Clinic at the corner of Cliff Avenue and Willow Street. Fiegen Construction is a familyowned, commercial construction company based in Sioux Falls. Ron Fiegen founded the company in 1967 after years of experience working in the steel and construction industry across the country. Currently, the day-to-day operations are led by brothers Jeff and Rusty Fiegen and Jeff’s son, Lucas. Their steady growth has been the result of preserving the family’s legacy and core values instilled by their father. “Nobody worked harder and nobody in the area had the knowledge of steel construction like our father had,” Rusty said.

The company prides itself on its employees and the service provided on each project. “About 20 years ago, we really advanced our ‘Design/Build’ approach to our business,” said Lucas Fiegen. The approach of offering in-house architects who work closely with clients while having the capability to build and construct those plans under the umbrella of one company has been key for Fiegen Construction over the years. “We enjoy it when a client asks us to design a complex project and we make it all come together.” About 50 employees work for Fiegen Construction with an average tenure greater than 12 years. Some employees have been with the company for 40+ years. “When we find a good employee we take care of them as if they are part of the family,” said Lucas. Several recent hires are fruits of the Harrisburg High School Career and Technical Education Center. Jack Marquardt and Jonah Dancisin both became acquainted with Fiegen Construction through their building trades classes at HHS. Jack is taking advantage of the Build Dakota Scholarship program, a Jack Marquardt working on-site at a Fiegen Construction project in Sioux Falls. 16

State of South Dakota initiative that helps pay for the cost of secondary education at South Dakota’s technical colleges. When Jack completes his education at Southeast Technical College, his tuition is paid for after fulfilling a commitment to work 3 years in the state. Jonah started working for Fiegen right out of high school and is now taking classes through AGC’s Apprenticeship Program while working full-time. Both programs offer hands-on experience while sharpening their minds for the construction industry. The future of the company looks promising as there is no shortage of building projects on the horizon. REIMAGINING THE SCHOOL LIBRARY By Bob Fitch

With students today having nearly limitless information in their iPhones, it’s time to think of libraries as something more than quiet repositories of books. Educational researchers advocate for libraries to be reimagined as open, transparent spaces that invite students to communicate and collaborate. Printed books still play a critical role in supporting learners, but digital technologies and makerspaces offer additional pathways to learning. Students and teachers no longer need a library simply for access to books. They need a place that encourages participatory learning from a variety of sources. In other words, instead of being an archive, libraries are becoming a learning commons, said educational researcher Beth Holland at Edutopia.org. In the Harrisburg School District, Kristi Jones is helping shepherd students, teachers and administrators across the bridge from the oldstyle library to the new “learning commons” concept. During her 9 years as the library media specialist at South Middle School and now in her first year at Freshman Academy, she and others have introduced new approaches in the library to stretch the minds of students by using both technology and makerspaces.

Ms. Jones is in her 33rd year of teaching, which includes 14 years as a teacher-librarian. She taught 3rd-6th grade at the Canton School District. When she took a year off for the birth of her son, she substitute taught kindergarten in Harrisburg. “I fell in love with kindergartners. So I got my kindergarten endorsement and taught those kiddos for 13 years, the last 8 of the stretch in Harrisburg.” The high school librarian at the time encouraged Ms. Jones to get her library endorsement and she became the librarian at Journey Elementary for its first 5 years. Then she shifted to South Middle School and now “finally made it to high school” as the teacher-librarian for Freshman Academy. (Outside of her work with the school district, she is also the librarian for the Harrisburg Community Library). She gives Travis Lape, who is now the district’s innovative programs director, much of the credit for her adding technology and makerspaces at the South Middle School library. While she would have preferred a carefully written plan, Mr. Lape jumped in feet first and pulled her and the students along with him. “It was a big, wonderful ride with Travis. He was ready with the tech – he just needed somebody to say, ‘Okay, I’ll try it.’ Now, I think 8 of our 10 schools have makerspaces. The elementary school libraries are doing an incredible job with the little guys.”

Like anything new, there’s always a period of trial and error. But there are also remarkable results. The South Middle principal asked her about “Scott” (not his real name), a student who was regularly disrupting his classes. “It surprised me because he came into the library every day for three years and I’d never seen any behavior issues. He was so happy in the library,” she said. “Scott was always here with the same group of boys and they were amazing. The first day we had a makerspace, we had these little fans and some batteries. The aim was to create a circuit to power the fan to fly up. Well, Scott and those guys figured out how to wire 20 batteries to it and see if they could shoot the fan up to the ceiling. I looked at Mr. Lape and he looked at me and we thought ‘We’re in big trouble with these guys, because they are so far above us when it came to these things.’” The word “shush” is rarely heard in Ms. Jones’ library. “Over at South, we’d crank the stereo up and kids would sit in their little areas, and they just worked on their projects. It was loud, but we had an enclosed space.” The open space she has now precludes the music, but the new Freshman Academy library will have walls next year. “The music helps make the library a place they love.” Even with makerspaces and music, the South Middle School had an incredible number of library books checked out. She said many students today like graphic novels. While there are educators who are critical of the graphic novel concept, she said the books are not necessarily easier reading. Every book in the library has a “Lexile” level assigned to it. Lexile is a measure of a book’s difficulty – and many English and Language Arts teachers are rigorous about getting students on a challenging Lexile level – which can be attained either through a traditional novel or a graphic novel. “The kids are into graphic novels because they often tie into video games they like. But it’s fine – their eyes are on books instead of screens. They’re reading and you have to be happy. You just want them to love reading.” Mr. Lape secured a grant to obtain quite a few materials for STEM activities and makerspaces at South Middle School. But Ms. Jones is having to re-build an inventory now for the Freshman Academy. She’s sharing materials with the high school library. THE BRIDGE | WINTER 2022

The K’Nex used to make the Ferris wheel are a hit. Meanwhile, the KAPLA planks offer challenging exercises in engineering. Several students have built free-standing bridges between tables as much as 36 inches apart. Another student was on her way to making a perfect replica of the Eiffel Tower – with no design to follow, just a picture and her own minds-eye of the tower’s architectural and engineering requirements. Ms. Jones would love to add Sphero’s as a resource for teachers and students. Sphero’s are little robot balls that students can code and program to go so far, stop, turn, etc. via an iPad app. Social studies teachers can have students program it to quiz themselves about countries on a giant map. A biology teacher can use it on a giant diagram of a human body and the students have to code in the path of blood flowing through the body. “If you can add activities like these, you’re drawing kids into the library. Some may be doing great in the classroom and others may struggle in the classroom – either way, the makerspace gives students a chance to thrive in a whole different way,” Ms. Jones said. //

FOUNDATION TO SUPPORT STUDENTS AND STAFF The Harrisburg School District Education Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, was established this fall to support the vision and strategic plan of the Harrisburg School District by raising private donations, increasing philanthropic giving, and building public awareness. The Foundation’s vision is to strengthen students and staff by providing the best opportunities for them to flourish. The organization’s mission is to support and provide access to high-quality education in the Harrisburg School District by raising private support for new and enriched opportunities. The Foundation will promote excellence in education by forging relationships between the District, alumni, community, and local business. Support of students and staff provides enhanced educational opportunities not met by other funding sources. The name says it all! The Foundation is the vehicle that provides financial support for many areas of educational needs. With a focus on children, the goal is to provide funding for materials and experiences that amplify learning in the classroom and would not be possible through state funding. Funding will be derived from income on investments and from direct donor contributions. From these funding sources, the Foundation will award grants at all grade levels and areas of curriculum. TEACHING YOUTH HELPS VARSITY REMEMBER WHERE IT ALL BEGAN Before the opening of their 2022-23 seasons, Harrisburg High School coaches and athletes took time in October to provide training to tomorrow’s team stars. Coach Callie Aylward and the HHS gymnastics team hosted 44 elementary-age girls and boys at a camp at Wings Gymnastics Academy. Coach Nick Mayer and the HHS girls basketball team hosted 75 elementary-age girls for camps at Endeavor and Horizon Elementary Schools and at the high school. Coach Scott Langerock and the HHS boys basketball team hosted 200 elementary-age boys at Explorer and Endeavor Elementary and at the high school. Coach Aylward said gymnastics campers had the opportunity to practice skills on vault, bars, beam, floor and trampoline. “We focused on skills and drills as well as taking turns, listening while the coach is speaking, and working together. Both the high school student coaches and the campers had a great time!”

represent our program to the community and to the younger kids. They have put countless hours into their own personal skill development. It is a very healthy reminder that it started somewhere and that it is worth it.” He said the varsity athletes do a great job at these camps interacting with the younger campers. “We have been doing this long enough now that our high school guys remember when they came to these camps. They tell stories to the campers that participate now.” The first two things the boys’ basketball camp focuses on are meeting new teammates and giving as many high fives as possible. “We want to create a very fun and energetic camp atmosphere. We want them to love playing basketball. And we want the kids to keep a positive attitude. You are going to make mistakes and miss shots when you play. Don’t get

frustrated with mistakes. Enjoy the process of practicing,” Coach Langerock said. When the ball hits floor, the boys basketball camps focus on three skill sets: Dribbling and ball handling, shooting form and layups, and passing. They put the skills in action through several games and drills. The real test is to effectively combine the skills and successfully implement them at game time. At the girls basketball camp, Coach Nick Mayer said, “We emphasize having fun, being loud and that it’s ok to make mistakes – because that’s how we learn. We focus on the basics of dribbling, passing, shooting and even get some defensive slides in the mix. Our high school kids are so great with the young kids; they display incredible energy, enthusiasm, patience and create long-lasting connections with our campers.” //

To be a good American, I believe you must first take a step back and look at the roots this country was originally founded upon. This country was built from the ground up with slabs of perseverance, individualism, and the undying desire for freedom. This new foundation was then packed with the rich soil of patriotism, and rays of death-defying love for this country. To be a Regina Stoeser good American, I believe you must understand the blood, sweat and tears that watered the seed of our great nation. I also believe that in order to be a good American, you simply need to be grateful for the gardeners who died watering this seed, and forever thank God for this great elm tree of a nation we call home.

HERE’S THE SLANT What does the fox say? I don’t know. I forgot to ask him. He took me by complete surprise on Thursday night when he ran a quick diagonal through the grocery store parking lot. The fox seemed very put together. He looked well-groomed with a beautiful coat that was standing at attention in the breeze. Why does a fox get so dressed up?

Maybe it was his wedding day. I wondered if he changed his mind and was high-tailing it back to the timberland, seeking a safe place to relish his bachelorhood. Whatever the occasion, I was pleased as punch to mark one down for things I don’t see every day. From my point of view, I always find victory in things that take me by surprise. Consider a recent camping trip. Thanks to a road-closed sign on Highway 46 near Irene, we took a detour on a blacktop to head south. A place called Wakonda appeared on the horizon not long after we turned. We slowed down to study the small town and just for fun, we decided to tour a place we had never been before by turning left on Slant Street. On the corner, where Slant meets Main, we found a tiny gas station and we went in to investigate. Our car was the only one in the parking lot but inside the place was abuzz. There was one cashier and a table of 6 in the back of the store playing pinochle on a mid-October Saturday afternoon. I was kind of curious and I wanted to ask the players if new members were welcome to join the card club. But I kept my mouth shut because the non-verbal cues were hard to miss. I could see that this was a VERY serious game of pinochle and strangers on a detour down Slant Street were of little to no significance to these pinochle players. Where Slant Street ended, we were able to head south again. Up one hill and down another showed us some of the most beautiful fall foliage ever witnessed in the valley beyond a creekbank near Volin. So, here’s the slant: Sometimes, even though you want to stop and play games, its not the right destination. Take your cue from the high-tailing fox. Keep running until you see what it is you didn’t know you were looking for.
