FROM THE MAYOR

GROWING EVEN IN THE OFFSEASON As winter starts to set in and the weather has gotten colder, I often find myself dreaming of warmer seasons. Growing up I always helped my mom with her garden, and I still enjoy gardening to this day. It’s rewarding to work on something and grow it from seed to harvest. I rode my bike down to the community gardens this past summer and could not believe how beautiful they all looked. It is clear that many residents put in a lot of time and effort to cultivate those plots.

Mayor Derick Wenck

Much like gardening, it takes a lot of work in the offseason to plan and coordinate the ongoing infrastructure projects in Harrisburg. We had a big “harvest” this fall as the city held a ribbon cutting ceremony for the Water Reclamation Facility that is now fully operational. With its completion we have enough capacity for an additional 13,000 residents and are no longer reliant on pumping wastewater to Sioux Falls. We also completed Phase II of Central Park enhancements which included grading and concrete work, and the construction of new t-ball fields. Check out the project pages on our city website. It is important to look back on what we’ve accomplished. The time certainly goes by quickly. But that same daydream of warmer weather has me excited for what is to come in 2022. Improvements to the Cliff and Willow intersection are scheduled to get underway. Further information will be published in the coming months specific to this project. Along with construction at Central Park continuing, Hugh Robinson Park will receive renovations as well. The existing picnic shelter on site will be torn down and a new one erected. Also, through a matching Land and Water Conservation Fund grant, Hugh Robinson Park will receive a new poured-in-place rubber surfacing and ADA inclusive playset equipment starting in spring 2022. With no shortage of projects taking place, we’re happy to announce the hire of Brandi Savage as our full-time deputy building official and Larry Klipfel as our new director of communications and community programming. Welcome to you both! We expect to continue to add headcount at City Hall as the needs of the community grow. Coming up very soon is the annual Christmas Lighting Contest. Although winners are only crowned in a few categories, it is a winwin for everyone involved – the participants, the spectators, and the community at large. Let’s make Harrisburg shine! Be sure to follow us on social media or visit the city’s website to find out more. Be safe decorating and good luck. I wish you a happy holiday season and cheers to 2022.

MESSAGE FROM THE CHAMBER

CARGO SHIPS AND CHRISTMAS I couldn’t believe my eyes. As I returned home from trick or treating with my kids, we walked in the house where my husband had the Monday Night Football game on the TV. And there it was — a Christmas commercial for a big box retailer! The Halloween candy buckets hadn’t even been dumped out yet, and there was Santa on the screen. Over the past few years, it seems like the push for Christmas shopping keeps getting moved up earlier and earlier. But this year, perhaps that’s warranted. There have been stories in the news regularly about the backlog in the supply chain, cargo ships stuck off the ports waiting to unload, and a shortage of everything you can imagine (and even things you can’t) since Covid upended our lives. It’s enough to make even the biggest procrastinator take notice. As I thought about this “urgent” need to start shopping, though, I started to wonder if maybe this was the year (or the excuse) I needed to reset Christmas expectations. What if—instead of being a huge inconvenience or stressor in my life—this unavailability of goods could actually help me and my family focus on what’s important? (Hint: it’s not the stuff under the tree.) I’m a pretty driven person who likes a sense of accomplishment at the end of the day, so it’s hard for me to set time aside for relaxation. There’s always work to be done or projects around the house. What if this Christmas I give my loved ones the gift of time together and treat them to experiences right here in Harrisburg? We at the Chamber of Commerce happen to have a few coming up for you to consider!

And even though the idea of moving the focus off of presents sounds nice, there will still likely be gifts under the tree this year. However, I encourage you to think creatively and shop local. Instead of relying Adrienne McKeown on big box stores or websites, support your local businesses who support the community. Gift cards are available for our local restaurants, gas stations, car washes, personal services like manicures and massages, and more. Best of all, you don’t have to worry about them being sold out or stuck on a cargo ship somewhere! Happy Holidays, Harrisburg! I look forward to another great year in 2022!

Chair of the Board, Harrisburg Economic Development Corp. & Chamber of Commerce

Join us on Friday, Dec. 3, for Santa’s arrival in Harrisburg! The “Harrisburg Hometown Holiday” event has become an annual tradition, featuring Santa riding into town in style, the lighting of the town Christmas tree, and other festive and fun activities. This year, we’ll be moving the festivities to the picnic shelter at Lake Ole, so join us at 5:45 p.m. and start the holidays off in the heart of Harrisburg. The following Tuesday, Dec. 7, we invite you to grab your friends and neighbors and join us for an evening of entertainment and good food at the Chamber’s Annual Banquet. The title may sound a little stuffy, but this promises to be anything but boring. We’ll enjoy a prime rib dinner, celebrate some community accomplishments from the past year, and then cut loose for the Dueling Duo piano spectacular. This fun night out on the town—hosted at The Meadow Barn—is an unbelievably good deal at just $25 per ticket. Contact Brandon at the Chamber office (brandon@harrisburgsdchamber.com) to get your ticket before they are sold out. All adults are welcome!

AMERICAN LEGION POST 45:

SERVICE ABOVE SELF

By Bob Fitch

Harrisburg American Legion Post 45 Commander Scott Axtell and officers Nate Blom and Collin Benson.

The motto of the American Legion is “Veterans Strengthening America.” However, three local leaders of the Alvin Dempewold American Legion Post 45 in Harrisburg said it’s really a two-way street. “I’m thankful to the community for supporting my family while I was deployed,” said Scott Axtell, who is commander of Post 45 and retired from the South Dakota Air National Guard. “My wife shouldered the duties of both mother and father, plus ran a business, and made everything work with the help of family, friends and community. When I was gone, there were people helping my kids get to sporting events and there were people in the stands to support them. My wife could call people to help shovel or mow the lawn. You can’t thank people enough.” Nate Blom, who just retired from the Air National Guard this fall, agreed that community support for his family was “huge” while he was deployed. “When I joined in 1999, my first deployment wasn’t for three or four years. And it was just two weeks long. Once the Iraq stuff took hold in 2005-06, the mentality changed. In 2006, 2008 and 2010, I went to Iraq. It became every 18 months we had some sort of tasking. So it really stressed a guy’s family over those years.” Collin Benson, a member of Post 45 who is still active in the Air National Guard, said, “It’s our family that sacrificed. There are spouses and children who were affected by service members being deployed outside the United States seven, eight, nine times. I think the families were sometimes more affected by us being gone than we were.” 10

Axtell said, “It takes a village to support the veterans. We’ve got a pretty good community doing just that.” The care shown by Harrisburg residents to service members makes it easy for the American Legion to give back to the community. There’s a lengthy list of Post 45’s involvement in the Harrisburg community: • Supports the Boy Scouts • Sponsors the local Legion baseball team • Sponsors the high school patriotic oratory contest • Participates in Christmas for Veterans at the VA hospital • Served burgers and brats to more than 300 people during the National Night Out in Harrisburg. • Provides a color guard at Harrisburg High School football games • Sponsors local youth to attend Boys State and Girls State • Sponsor of the Harrisburg Youth Trap Shooting Team • Sponsor of Youth Trooper Academy • Donor to Harrisburg Community Food Pantry • Conducts annual Memorial Day Ceremony for the Harrisburg community •

In addition, American Legion Post 45 supports local law enforcement, the fire department, HHS homecoming, and Harrisburg Days. The group places 35 flags around Tiger Stadium for special events.

One day a month, Post 45 provides military honors for funerals of veterans being buried at the South Dakota Veteran’s Cemetery on the northwest corner of Sioux Falls. There are one to four funerals at the cemetery each day. In addition to an honor guard presenting the colors, there is a salute by a firing squad, taps, and folding the flag and presenting it to the family. Post 45 provides the same honors for veterans being buried in Harrisburg and occasionally in Sioux Falls, Canton and Tea. Benson said there about 100 members in local Legion, which includes some who are retired and some who are not able to get out any more. “We have some amazing members who do wellness checks of those who don’t get out. When a guy hits a low, they’ll know there are people who care because of these checkins. The bottom line is the community cares about our veterans and, in turn, our veterans care about the community.” Blom said, “I love being part of the community. We just finished up year seven of our annual fish fry. There’s so many people in the community who tell us ‘We look forward to that.’ It’s fun to go out and sell the tickets when we get that kind of response and people show up with smiling faces. I enjoy every minute I’m able to spend with these guys and contribute to the community.” He also noted the many “thank you’s” Legion members received during Harrisburg Days. Benson said members of the American Legion Auxiliary and the Sons of the American Legion are important participants in the Legion’s community service. Within the Legion, current service members and veterans from all branches of the military take part in the organization’s community service. Harrisburg was recently named a “Purple Heart City.” A community designated as a Purple Heart City honors and remembers military personnel wounded or killed in combat with hostile forces. The Purple Heart is the nation’s oldest military medal, created by George Washington in 1782 (it was originally called the Badge of Military Merit). Purple Heart signs will be placed at several entrances to the city, plus special Purple Heart and veterans parking signs will be placed at several locations. Benson said, “It’s a reminder for everybody coming into town of the sacrifices veterans have made for their country.” “Really, it recognizes everybody in town who has taken the time to serve their country,” Axtell said. Members of the Harrisburg American Legion attended a ceremony at the Lincoln County courthouse where Canton and Lennox were also named Purple Heart Cities and Lincoln County was named a Purple Heart County.

American Legion District 7 Vice-Commander Larry Maxwell receives a check for $6,777 from Harrisburg Post 45 Commander Scott Axtell. South Dakota American Legion sponsors one Midwest Honor Flight for South Dakota Veterans to give them an opportunity to see the war memorials in Washington D.C. South Dakota American Legion Posts were each challenged to raise $753 to sponsor one veteran. The donation of $6,777 by Harrisburg Post 45 is equivalent to nine seats for veterans on the honor flight. Money was raised through corporate and individual sponsors; a burger/brat feed and cornhole tournament during Harrisburg Days; National Night Out burger feed; and Post 45’s 7th Annual Fish Feed.

The American Legion was established in 1919 by veterans returning from World War I. Harrisburg Post 45 was established just a year later in 1920. It was named after Alvin Dempewolf, who was Harrisburg’s first soldier killed in action. Axtell said Post 45’s focus has remained consistent over the years. “I run off the American Legion’s four pillars: children and youth programs; Americanism; national security; and Veterans affairs and rehabilitation.” Benson said the American Legion and U.S. military forces are dedicated to “service above self.”

Harrisburg was one of three Lincoln County cities which received the designation of “Purple Heart City.” Pictured are: Larry Klipfel representing the City of Harrisburg; Ken Teunissen of the South Dakota Military Order of the Purple Heart; Post 45’s Bill Dunker and John Bonjour; Harrisburg Mayor Derrick Wenck; and Post 45’s Dave Gaard, Commander Scott Axtell, Sheldon Ahrendt, Terry Harris and Terry Anderson. WHAT IS PATRIOTISM TO ME? By Abigaelle Pilaz, 2020 Harrisburg North Middle School PATRIOT’S PEN WINNER

Patriotism is not only about being loyal to your country, it is about being respectful, trustful, and supportive of the place that is your home. If everyone tries to be their best, it would make the whole world a much better place. We have differences, but we as Americans can put them all aside to better our country. I was born in Europe, and then moved to the U.S. Because of this, patriotism means a little bit more to me than just being the best I can be in the country in which I was born. It’s being the best I can be in any country or state I live in. It may be a little different for me and my family, since we were not born here, but that doesn’t mean we are not patriotic. We enjoy donating to local organizations around the U.S., and that is one way we support the country. Abigaelle Pilaz

12

Patriotism is about honoring your nation and appreciating what it is unique for. It has been around for 200 years! For example, when you participate in elections you are practicing something that has existed since 1788. Voting is one of the most well-known ways to show patriotism. Another way to show patriotism is by honoring your veterans, not by just saying thank you for their service, but by doing things to support them, such as honoring them on Veterans Day. One other example of patriotism in history would be the response to Hurricane Katrina. When it hit, thousands of people were hurt and injured. Millions of people helped to clean up and to donate money, clothes and food to the people who needed them. Our country stepped up for their homeland during this time. In conclusion, patriotism is about honoring and supporting your country however you can. We as Americans can set a goal to show patriotism whenever possible. Life here isn’t always perfect, but there are so many things to appreciate about it and the amenities that we have. Every day I stand with my classmates and pledge allegiance to the flag, and every day I try to show patriotism in my life by celebrating national holidays and learning about their importance. I would challenge you to go out and support your country by showing patriotism as well.

WHAT IS PATRIOTISM TO ME? By Leia Rombough, 2020 Harrisburg South Middle School PATRIOT’S PEN WINNER

Dictionary.com says that patriotism means “devoted love, support, and defense of one’s country; national loyalty.” It is that, and so much more. In my opinion, Patriotism is something that we need more now than ever. If you watch the news and hear what is happening, it feels like America is not proud or working together. We should be proud of our past and we need to show it. We can do this by saluting a soldier or flying the flag proudly. Patriotism means to me that we show our thanks and to respect the people who risked their life for us. I think the most important ways to show patriotism includes giving thanks to our Veterans. Veterans hold a special place in my heart because my Dad is one. He served as a Captain in the Army and also the Army Reserves. I know it was important to him and how much he values our Country because he had to make sacrifices to serve but does not regret them. He is proud and has taught my brothers

IS THIS THE COUNTRY OUR FOUNDERS ENVISIONED? By Madison Luke 2020 HHS VOICE OF DEMOCRACY WINNER

On July 4, 1776, the United States of America accomplished independence. From that day on, America has grown from 13 small colonies to 50 vast states. The U.S has done many things throughout time to make things better for citizens. They have provided equality and fair rights to everyone who decides to come. You can do so many things in the U.S. Therefore, America is the land of opportunity. Madison Luke

The U.S. provides opportunity through human rights. There are many organizations and laws that makes all of this possible. Organizations such as Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) makes sure that no one is excluded from getting equal rights. The U.S Department of Justice says, “The ADA is one of America’s most comprehensive pieces of civil rights legislation that prohibits discrimination and guarantees that people with disabilities have the same opportunities as everyone else to participate in the mainstream of American life.” The ADA is not the only organization to do things like this. There are others such as the ACLU which preserve rights to every person in the U.S. Our constitution not only provides opportunities but it also provides freedom. America has many laws that protect people’s opinion and so much more. THE BRIDGE | WINTER 2021

and sisters to respect the flag and the freedoms that others have made the biggest sacrifice to protect. Another thing that’s important to celebrate is the Fourth of July. This is a holiday that I really enjoy as it is usually spent with family and fun. But more than that, it is important to not forget that the Declaration of Independence was signed and we celebrate the United States of America’s birth to become an independent nation.

Leia Rombough

I think that during this special time of year, I will always remember the sacrifices of so many people that I will never meet. The world needs more of that kind of people right now - willing to serve and think of others no matter the cost. That is why it is important to give thanks to our veterans and celebrate the Fourth of July.

Education is very important in America. Everyone has the chance to go to school, and having free public education makes that possible. Going to school in other countries costs many families money. In El Salvador after textbooks and clothes it costs a staggering $680 to get an education. Most other countries also pay a large amount of money to go to school. This could result in some families not being able to afford to give their children an education. The U.S is one of the few countries that have free schooling. America also has schooling through high school, which not all countries have. Having school up until 12th grade gives everyone a chance to learn great things through a great education. America is known as the “melting pot.” Many people come from all over the place to start a new life in the U.S. A majority of people come over to pursue the “American dream.” Investopedia states that, “The American Dream is the belief that anyone, regardless of where they were born or what class they were born into, can attain their own version of success in a society where upward mobility is possible for everyone. The American Dream is achieved through sacrifice, risk-taking, and hard work, rather than by chance.” Many people have accomplished amazing things through the American Dream. Another way that the American dream is plausible is because of the many jobs that we offer. We encourage businesses to grow and by doing that it provides job opportunities for many people. In conclusion, America provides many different opportunities for people. The U.S does that through having human rights and organizations. That makes everyone equal to one another. Public education costs nothing and that lets everyone have a chance to get good schooling no matter what. America also has many ways for immigrants to start over. So next time when you hear the word America you should think opportunity.

THE WRITING’S ON THE WALL:

RECOGNIZING THE LEADERSHIP, SERVICE AND SACRIFICE OF HHS VETERANS Did you know at least one Harrisburg High School senior misses their graduation ceremony every year? Having worked their entire lives for this moment, why would they fail to show up for their own graduation, you ask? For these students, this is just the first of many special occasions they will likely miss as the newest enlisted members of the United States Armed Forces. Over the years, Harrisburg High School has produced a significant number of individuals who have chosen to proudly serve our country as members of the U.S. military. About 2 percent of HHS graduates enlist full-time every year, while others enlist part-time in addition to pursuing postsecondary education. It is truly commendable to commit to serving one’s country at such a young age. Harrisburg High School seeks to honor these graduates by featuring them on a Veterans Wall of Honor, a permanent memorial in the school’s commons. In addition to serving as a token of gratitude, the wall is a means of sharing with current

students and the community the legacy of Tigers from previous generations who led, sacrificed, and served the country. The project is fully funded by donations and will be erected when enough contributions are received. The estimated cost of construction is $5,000. The Harrisburg American Legion has generously donated medallions for each branch of service. To become a donor, please email JoAnne.VerMulm@k12.sd.us or call 605-743-2567, ext. 6143. WHAT DO STUDENTS THINK ABOUT THE NEW ADVENTURE ELEMENTARY?

Adventure Elementary students. Ana Burns, Emma Kuper, Raegyn Fox, Andy Meyer, Tristan Koutsarath, Christian Miller. Photos by Jon Klemme.

Adventure Elementary School is the newest K-5 school in the Harrisburg School District. It’s located at 27220 472nd Ave. in Sioux Falls. A half dozen fourth and fifth grade students from the classrooms of Mr. Vanderbeek and Mrs. Dalton were invited to write essays about what they liked about their new school. Thanks to Adventure Principal Angela Nelson for coordinating with the writers and their teachers.

ADVENTURE HAS STUDIOS AND PODS

ADVENTURE IS AN AWESOME SCHOOL

By Christian Miller

By Christian Miller

The new thing in school is doing PL (Personalized Learning) and we have lockers. In a big room – and we don’t call it a classroom – is the studios. Plus a lot of new kids and new friends have Christian Miller come here. We have furniture in our pod. Our pod is a big space where the studios and furniture and bathroom are at. This new school looks modern.

Adventure is a school where you can learn and have fun. That’s why Adventure is an awesome school. There are glass rooms near all the classrooms which is actually called the pod. The glass rooms are there so students can work quietly and focus. The glass rooms are a privilege to have. Emma Kuper The playground is a big place where you can run around. There is a lot of new equipment and it is so much fun. There is a giant field of grass to just run around. There are all kinds of different kids at Adventure. Some are from Freedom, Liberty, Explorer and some are from Sioux Falls schools too. It is so good to see other kids from different schools. And that is my awesome story about Adventure!

ADVENTURE IS AMAZING

ADVENTURING ADVENTURE

By Raegyn Fox

By Tristan Koutsarath

Today you will read about how amazing the teachers and workers are, stuff connected to the glass study rooms, and what the new playground can lead to in Adventure. BRACE YOURSELF! The employees – aka teachers and workers – are pretty cool, especially my teacher, Mrs. Dalton. But what I, me, myself think is cool is that the food is delicious (thanks to the cooks), how well the teachers teach, the janitors who clean our school, and the games. Raegyn Fox

School at Adventure is amazing. There is a new smell. The desks are new. I have never been in PL, so it’s new. PL is fun. I love switching studios. The teachers are nice and the classes are smaller. The thing I don’t like is that it was hard leaving friends. Lots of teachers are new, which is great, because I can meet new teachers. It’s just new. I am finally getting the hang of it. There’s nothing the same as Explorer. Still, I think it is amazing.

I haven’t told you my thoughts on the new playgrounds, like how new playgrounds equal new game ideas, how I think newer is better (in my Tristan Koutsarath opinion), and more stuff to explore. The blessing of the glass study rooms is a big one if you need somewhat quiet and focused study. If you are focusing on the fun, flexible seating, and somewhere to go where there aren’t like 26 other kids speaking over each other. That’s a lot of facts, right? Maybe that’s why Adventure is called Adventure! Because it’s full of adventures. I hope you learned something. Bye!

ADVENTURE YOU SAY? IT’S BRAND SPANKING NEW! By Andy Meyer

Adventure is brand spanking new so you better know about it! The school layout is so nice. The playground is behind the school; when you walk in it, if you look to your left, you will see Tiger Reserve, and to your right is PL. If you’re wondering what PL or Tiger Reserve is, I’ll tell you. PL stands for Personalized Learning. PL is where you can work at your own pace. Tiger Reserve is an advanced program. In Adventure, there’s pod rooms where there’s comfy furniture and tables where you can sit at. We also do morning meeting in the pod. Adventure is an awesome school and you should go there. Andy Meyer

LET’S FLY INTO ADVENTURE! By Ana Burns

Let’s fly into adventure! I like to play on the playground because it has really fun monkey bars and those spinning things. Now I am going to talk about flexible seating. I like the wobbly chairs and the small chairs. There are a mix of kids. You should come to our school because we have nice activities and nice teachers and I hope you can come to my school because I will show you around – and I want a new friend to spend time with. So please come to Adventure Elementary. Thanks for flying into adventure with me. Have a good day! Ana Burns

FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT

A SHARED PURPOSE & HELPING OTHERS GIVES LIFE MORE MEANING

Superintendent Tim Graf

As the calendar turned to November, I found myself reflecting upon the past two years and our country’s military veterans. We are hearing vaccinations for children between the ages of 5 and 12 are expected to receive FDA approval very soon. While the number of active cases in our school community have been very low in recent weeks, I cannot help but wonder what lies ahead. Will Covid become like the flu, in that it is a moving target? Will booster shots be offered annually?

Schools and educators have responded to this pandemic to serve our families and communities. School staff became a community of people with a purpose, similar in ways to how our veterans have responded over and over to conflicts throughout the history of our great country. They have done so with great honor and always with a sense of sacrificing for others. I have great appreciation and gratitude for the unparalleled level of sacrifice that our veterans have made, which allows us to pursue our sense of purpose. I distinctly recall when my son returned from Iraq during the height of the Iraq War conflict. As he was adjusting to civilian life, he shared how when he was ‘over there’ everything had purpose. Our lives have more meaning when we feel we have a sense of purpose and can help others. The freedoms we have in America exist because of our veterans. We truly are the land of the free because of the brave. The Harrisburg School District returned to an in-person Veterans Day program this year to honor the service and sacrifice of our Veterans. Although the number of students who attended in person was limited to allow our veterans and members of the community to attend while still offering some social distancing, we are grateful for the opportunity to celebrate these brave members of our community as they inspire the work we do in our schools and with our families. We expect to return to our traditional program in future years.

NORTH MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS ENJOY LITTLE LEAGUE WORLD SERIES RUN By Garrett Gross This past August the Sioux Falls Little League All-Stars made a deep run into the Little League World Series. The Sioux Falls All-Stars were the first South Dakota team to ever win a game in Williamsport, Penn. – and the team advanced to within one game of the championship. The Harrisburg community has ties to two of the players on the team.

Gavin Weir and Boston Bryant.

Harrisburg North Middle School 7th grader Gavin Weir (P/OF) and North Middle 6th grader Boston Bryant (OF/C) both played key roles on the team. The two gained national notoriety as both batted in the top of the line-up and led the offensive effort in runs scored, hits and home runs. Over the course of the Little League tournament season, Gavin started eight games as a pitcher and threw seven no-hitters. He faced 132 batters, striking out 114 batters while allowing only one hit. This stat line garnered the attention of baseball fans around the country including comparisons to MLB All-Star Chris Sale. However, the highest praise received might have been from Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes who tweeted Gavin’s name with fire and bullseye emojis. Gavin simply explains that interaction, “Yep, that was pretty cool.”

Boston Bryant with his parents, Megan and Tyler, and his sister, Macy. Not pictured is younger brother, Tristen.

Gavin and Boston’s Little League odyssey started after winning the South Dakota Little League Tournament in late July in Rapid City. From there they left home for Indianapolis for the regional tournament on Aug. 5th. They wouldn’t return home from Pennsylvania until Aug. 30th. While the pair missed the start of the school year, they were cheered from afar by classmates and they were welcomed home during an all-school assembly at North Middle School upon their return. This once-in-a-lifetime experience was shared with their families as both were able to have their parents and siblings join them in Williamsport. Covid-19 prevention protocols presented unique challenges throughout their time in Indiana and Pennsylvania, but it was a life experience none of them will forget. It was a huge commitment for everybody involved and the support from the local and statewide community was well appreciated.

Gavin Weir (third from left) with his brother, Drew; father, Ronnie; mother, Shannon; and brother, Landry.

For now, both Gavin and Boston are focused on school and playing other sports as Gavin plays basketball and Boston wrestles. When the snow melts next spring, both look forward to returning to the diamonds and playing baseball again.

HHS ALUMNI PROFILE | ADAM BIRGER

SERVPRO’S MISSION: CREATE HAPPY CUSTOMERS

By Bob Fitch

The intersection of customer service experience and personal experience with calamities in their own home helped spur Adam and Jessica Birger to start South Dakota’s first SERVPRO company, a general service contractor offering cleanup, restoration and construction services. Adam said they faced a series of disasters at their first home in Tea. “We wound up with a flooded basement more than once. And then, one year, I was dumb enough to try to surprise my wife by cooking a romantic Valentine’s Day dinner – and I ended up starting a romantic Valentine’s Day kitchen fire. So then we dealt with that.” Adam and Jessica both had customer service experience and were looking to take their careers in a new direction. “I was in customer service management and I had gone about as far as I could. I knew I wanted to be my own boss and started looking into options,” he said. “We fell upon the SERVPRO system mainly because we thought ‘What could we do where we can help people with something we understand?’ That was disaster recovery for us. Dealing with water and other damage was a way for us to help people restore their homes or businesses. It helps that we can empathize with what they’re going through from an emotional level and a customer service aspect.” When the business started seven years ago, the total crew was Adam, Jessica and one employee. Today, SERVPRO of Sioux Falls has 12-15 employees – and everyone in the company has first-hand experience with jobs that are down-and-dirty. “When we opened, our first job was a carpet cleaning. Our second job was a farm house in the country where the septic tank collapsed and pushed all the contents back out into the house. So I went straight from a carpet cleaning to literally knee-deep in excrement. You have to jump in and experience it all and be completely ready to live in that world to have a business like this.” According to Adam, “The majority of what we do is help people restore after fire, water and mold damage. We do anything gross – like sewer system back-up or trauma scene clean-up.” SERVPRO also cleans carpets and HVAC ducts; construction such as finishing basements or doing home additions; and they sell Shaw flooring. SERVPRO Industries LLC is one of the nation’s leading cleanup and restoration corporations. “Being locally owned, we still make our own decisions on a local basis and then we’re backed by the largest name in the industry. So we have the resources and training that go along with that.”

Adam Birger, co-owner of SERVPRO Sioux Falls. Birger is a graduate of Harrisburg High School.

“We’re a full-service contractor – everything from the emergency call in the middle of the night to start sucking the water out to the drying to the demolition through to the rebuild. We can deal with your affected contents – pack them up, take them out, and clean them; and bring it all back in when the construction is done. Literally A to Z we can help you,” he said. Jessica was born in New Hampshire and spent her teenage years in Watertown. Adam grew up in Harrisburg and graduated in one of the last classes when all 12 grades were still in one building. After

24

CONNECTING THE HARRISBURG COMMUNITY

graduation, he moved to Sioux Falls. Later, the couple moved to Tea because Adam wanted to return to a small community like the one he grew up in. When his crew has a job in Harrisburg, he’ll joke about how that neighborhood was nothing but dirt hills when he was young. “Everything’s different. But to me that’s good. If you’re not growing, you’re dying. I’m a big fan of growth. I know not everybody is, but as a business owner, it just obviously makes sense to grow a business in a thriving community. I think it’s really cool to see the towns around Sioux Falls to be growing like they are,” he said. Adam is on the board of directors of the Tea Chamber of Commerce and SERVPRO is a member of the Home Builders Association, the Harrisburg and Sioux Falls Chambers and the Realtors Association. SERVPRO is insured and bonded; plus Adam is a “Triple Master” – Textile Cleaner, Fire & Smoke Restorer, and Water Restorer. The Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certifications demonstrate his professional knowledge: “It means if you call me, I might have a clue as to what I’m doing.” He described his wife and co-owner as “the rock of the business.” “Jessica keeps everything coordinated, organized and well-oiled.” The couple was introduced when Jessica’s best friend in college and Adam’s brother were dating. “We started dating and here we are,” Adam said. The couple has three children:

Travis, 13; Emma, 11; and Zac, 5. The kids are active with school activities and sports. When the family isn’t at a game and can find a chance to get away from the business, they enjoy off-roading with UTVs in the Black Hills. Those trips are a fun way to “disconnect from the world and technology” and are “a good way to re-focus and clear your mind.” “Part of my hope when we started the business was to create a new branch on our family tree – to create an opportunity for our children that they otherwise wouldn’t have had,” he said. “We have goals to grow the business – and make it sustainable and maintainable – and hopefully bring the kids in to understand the business and management. But they’ll start with things like hauling wet carpet out of the basement, so old guys like us don’t have to do it.” Adam said SERVPRO tries not to say “no” to any project. “Our purpose is creating ‘happy customers.’ That’s what it’s all about in a service business.”

LOCAL FAMILY PROFILE | SCHULZ

MEET THE DYNAMIC SCHULZ FAMILY At first glance, Cliff and Amy Schulz appear to be mildmannered insurance professionals. And, in fact, their daily focus is on helping people and businesses prepare for life’s crises by offering a full gamut of insurance products. The rest of their story is a dynamic blend of championship Arabian horse showing, acting, executive producing a movie, and building connections in the greater Harrisburg community. First, the insurance story. Cliff and Amy Schulz are partners in RightQuote, an independent insurance brokerage based in Harrisburg. Cliff said. “We’re brokers who actually work for you – the client – and not the insurance company. We have relationships directly with the underwriters. If we can’t get a product through our normal brokerage relationships, we

By Bob Fitch

have other broker agencies we work closely with, especially on surplus lines. If somebody has an unusual situation or a difficult situation like a bad auto accident on their record, we can help.” RightQuote sells a spectrum of insurance products – life, health, supplemental health, business property and casualty, accident, farm, pet insurance, crop insurance and more. “We’ve got a really cool new employee benefits plan product that’s exclusive to us,” Cliff said. Affordacare Insurance and Champion Health are working with RightQuote in this marketplace to roll out an innovative solution for group health and employee benefits. With Amy’s biology degree, teaching background, and pharmaceutical sales experience, she is very detail oriented. She does most of the ongoing training to keep the office up on all the rules, regulations, and nuances of various insurance products. “I want to make sure the client is taken care of. It’s important to look at these little endorsements. Some agents get comfortable with their book of business and don’t look at the new or changed coverages that are available,” she said. According to Amy, it is vital to review that endorsements are in place to cover situations like water back-up and sump pump failure. In addition, home valuations are changing rapidly in the market so it’s critical to ensure you’ve got enough coverage to replace your home in case of disaster. Cliff added, “At the end of the day, it’s about service. You’ve got to show concern and compassion when people are going through traumatic times. Being in a small community, we know how important it is to build relationships. We help clients get their coverage right and keep them very happy,” Cliff said. After Amy worked in the pharmaceutical industry for a time, and before their second child was born, she decided to homeschool their children at their home in rural Harrisburg. (Sam did attend Harrisburg Middle School.) He spent his high school years getting professional acting training in Los Angeles. Several years ago, Amy joined Cliff at an insurance company he was representing before they started RightQuote. Cliff started in the insurance business in 1988. “I ended up traveling around the county in various positions. I was a very strong sales guy … won all the awards. Then they asked me to go into management to develop agents and field train other managers.” Insurance has been a touchstone in his career, but he’s had a few detours along the way.

The first major detour happened in 1992 when he re-located to Los Angeles for his insurance career. Cliff had always had CONNECTING THE HARRISBURG COMMUNITY

some interest in an acting career. A work colleague introduced him to her mother who was a casting agent. She sponsored him for membership in the Screen Actors Guild – and had him on the set of the hit NBC drama “L.A. Law” the morning after they met. In addition, he had small parts in other shows and films including “3 Ninjas Kick Back” and “Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit.”

Cliff Schulz was the executive producer of the movie “Wild Prairie Rose.” Samuel Schulz played the role of “Dale.”

He jumped into Hollywood with both feet, but soon discovered the meaning of the phrase “starving actor.” So he left L.A. Cliff and Amy Schulz in wardrobe on the set and returned home to of the movie “Wild Prairie Rose.” Le Mars in 1994. “The first night back, I met Amy. She was going to Westmar College and had become friends with my old friends. When I walked into the local watering hole where she was working as a waitress, she was the first person I saw. I quickly asked around to find out who she was, and we ended up getting married and having babies.” That brought him back around to the insurance business, this time in Sioux City. The next detour took him to Sioux Falls into commercial banking where he sold software. The next detour found him in the role of sales and marketing director for Amesbury Group’s door hardware division. “That took me all over North America, as well as to England and China.” Cliff said. Then it was back full-time into insurance for the next 15 years covering an eight-state area. About eight years ago, the family took an interesting journey when their son, Sam, was cast in one of the main supporting roles as “Dale” in a feature film shot in Beresford. Cliff and Amy later got small parts with daughter Sydney in a background role. As the production progressed, Cliff and Amy got more involved in the film. Amy was assistant costume designer, while Cliff became executive producer. “Wild Prairie Rose” tells the story of Rose Miller who returns to her rural hometown of Beresford to care for her ailing mother. Once there, she falls in love with a deaf man and must decide if she has the courage to follow her heart.

While it was an independent, low-budget film, it won many awards in the film festival circuit throughout 2016 and 2017. It can currently be seen on Amazon Prime, Tubi, IMDb, Flixhouse, The ROKU Channel, Vudu and PureFlix. The lead actor in “Wild Prairie Rose” is THE BRIDGE | WINTER 2021

Troy Kotsur, who is currently starring in a movie called “CODA” (an acronym for Child Of Deaf Adults), which swept the awards at the Sundance Film Festival and co-stars Academy Award winner Marlee Matlin. “CODA” is now showing on Apple TV+. Cliff and Amy are hoping all the Hollywood attention Kotsur is currently receiving will provide some residual attention to “Wild Prairie Rose.”

Sydney Schulz in 2019 on the day she captured the Arabian Horse Youth National Side Saddle Championship. Amy Schulz, right, is holding the trophy.

Cliff Schulz and his son, Samuel, during the filming of “Wild Prairie Rose” eight years ago.

Around the same time the Schulz family was busy with filmmaking, they also jumped into the world of horses. Amy said, “Being homeschooled, our daughter was looking for activities. She decided to give horseback riding a try. She took riding lessons at CK Stables (east of Harrisburg) and bought a rescue horse. Then, when Sydney wanted to go further, they moved their rescue horse, named Baby, to Performance Plus Arabians and bought an Arabian show horse. Their Arabian, named Royal, will soon deliver a baby show horse. Years of practice paid off for Sydney two years ago. “Sydney won the national side saddle championship in 2019 and

reserve champion in western pleasure at the US Youth Nationals in Oklahoma City,” Amy said. Sam continues his aspirations to be a professional actor and is an avid investor. Currently, both Sam and Sydney work for RightQuote. Sydney is the receptionist and office manager; Sam is a health insurance broker. Sydney’s boyfriend, Benjamin Keyser, is the sales assistant and is studying to be a broker. Not only is RightQuote familyowned and family-operated, but it also aims to be community-focused. After a career which frequently had Cliff traveling across the country, RightQuote now keeps him closer to home, allowing the couple to be more engaged in the Harrisburg area community. RightQuote is a member of the Harrisburg Chamber, and the couple plans to be active in many community events. “We’re here, we’re local. And we really want to be part of this community,” Amy said.

ONE FINE FALL DAY Photos by Jon Klemme Country Apple Orchard has been a Harrisburg area family tradition for the past 37 years. Located on Highway 115 on the western outskirts of Harrisburg, Country Apple Orchard features 13 varieties of apples. But apples are just the beginning of the experience. The orchard also features a wealth of other products and familyfriendly activities including: • Caramel apples, honey, candy, Kettle Korn, pie and more. • Apple cannon range. • Giant hay bale maze and sand tractor tire mountain. • Pony rides, petting zoo and kiddie train rides. • Corn pit, corn maze, pony rides and rubber duck races. • Zip line course and South Dakota’s largest jumping pillows. • Pumpkins display and sales.

PERSPECTIVE

NOVEMBER NIGHTS Tuesday has a new flavor – its Ninja. At the end of a recent workday, my friend said she had to hustle to get her threeyear-old to the gym for Ninja time. There have been many drop-off destinations for my three sons over the years, but Ninja? Never. The conversation caused me to pause and remember fondly the years gone by when our Jane Klemme little ones relied on us to fulfill their social obligations. Now that my sons are grown, they travel with me, well, never. But they still do request a favor from time to time. In fact, just last week our son sent both his parents east to scavenge up some cracked corn. We drove his pickup hitched to the grain wagon and headed down the highway – destination Larchwood, Iowa. We were careful to follow his detailed instructions: 1. Weigh the wagon empty. 2. Stop in office and request cracked corn. 3. Line up the wagon under the elevator shaft. 4. Drive onto the scale and pay. 5. Drive home – slow. All of that was simple enough except for the instruction he never conveyed: Close all the windows. Corn chaff covered the entire interior of the pickup along with its occupants. Being buried under a light dusting of corn chaff reminded me of growing up on the farm. It was the late autumn cloud cover that made the night pitch black and threatening. Though it seemed midnight, it was probably just past 7 p.m. My mom packed up supper and all of us kids. Luckily the tater tot casserole was covered, because the ride was rough bouncing in the backseat, as we crossed the newly harvested cornrows and drove toward the light … the headlight of a tired old International tractor. Our destination was to feed the guy inside. It surprised me on that November night when someone dismounted the tractor, but I was not sure I knew him. He was covered by a fine dusting of corn chaff with small drifts on the north side of his moustache. It was an odd place to eat, outside among the bent-up cornstalks in the beams of the machinery headlights; but the conversation was good and there was never a safer place for us to spill our tiny Styrofoam cups of milk.
