OAK GROVE PARK
Hawarden is home to Oak Grove Park and Big Sioux Park, which consist of a combined 433 acres of county and state land managed by the Sioux County Conservation Board. The Oak Grove area offers a variety of habitats to explore including forest, prairie, and riparian. The park has several scenic observation points and has two large outcroppings of Sioux Quartzite. Among the other amenities at Oak Grove are: • Hiking, picnicking, fishing and bird watching • Campground and cabins • Enclosed shelters • Boat ramp to the Big Sioux River • Geocaching high tech scavenger hunt • Watercraft rentals

BIG SIOUX RECREATION AREA
Commonly known as “The South Pit,” this area is managed by the Sioux County Conservation Board and is located at 84 West 10th St. on the southwest edge of Hawarden. The 270-acre area features campgrounds, swimming beach, playground, no-wake boating, fishing, picnicking, bird watching, outdoor archery practice range and more. Annual passes and day passes are available.
Hiking is a popular pastime at Oak Grove Park.

PRAIRIE WOODS NATURE CENTER
The Prairie Woods Nature Center opened in 2020 at Oak Grove State Park. It provides the opportunity to learn about Sioux County’s environment and history. Interactive exhibits provide information on different habitats including wetland, prairie, and forest, as well as covering Sioux County’s geological and settlement history. The interactive exhibits include part of a mammoth’s tusk, Native American arrowheads from Sioux County, pieces of a giant clam shell from the Cretaceous period, taxidermic displays, a star lab and more.
Summer hours at the Nature Center: 9 a.m.-4 p.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday 1-7 p.m. on Thursday 1-4 p.m. on Sunday
Winter hours are the same on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday; and change to 1-4 p.m. on Thursday; 9 a.m.-noon on Saturday; and closed on Sunday.
