Foreword

Moreover, most Luxembourgers naturally use different tongues throughout the day, switching back and forth between the three official languages Luxembourgish, German and French, plus English. This social and cultural diversity also shapes contemporary Luxembourg literature because it, too, finds expression in all four languages, represents every genre and displays a great plurality of subjects and forms. Every year, several major literary prizes, e.g. the Prix Batty Weber, the Prix Servais, the Lëtzebuerger Buchpräis and the Concours littéraire national are awarded to Luxembourg’s finest authors. To foster the reputation of Luxembourg’s literature at an international level, the Ministry of Culture set up the Reading Luxembourg programme in 2018. In partnership with the Agence luxembourgeoise d’action culturelle (ALAC), the programme provides a contact point for foreign publishers, literary agents and authors. The aim is to establish a wide-ranging international network, to support the country’s presence at book fairs, and to promote the licensing business, in part by subsidising translation costs for foreign publishers. It is very important to me that we increase the exposure of Luxembourg literature and encourage international trade professionals to discover our dynamic and multilingual publishing scene and literature. For a small country, literature in more than one language is both an opportunity and a challenge: an opportunity, because multiple cultural influences enrich the literature; a challenge, because it is not easy for a tiny, multilingual literary industry to prevail in an international market. With this in mind, I am especially proud that our diverse literature will once again be represented at the Frankfurt Book Fair this year. But over and above that, I would like to invite you to discover Luxembourg’s creative publishing industry and explore its cultural diversity.

Introduction

This universal quote by the French philosopher and statesman Louis-Gabriel-Ambroise de Bonald rings especially true for the Luxembourg book scene, on which an amazing variety of themes encounters a multilingualism and multiculturalism which are embraced as self-evident parts of life in a way that is unique in Europe. This has not always been the case in Luxembourg, a society in which nowadays nationals from 193 countries mingle on a daily basis on a territory of barely 2,586 square kilometres. Only with the implementation of the law on languages in 1984, which regulates the usage of the French, German and Luxembourgish tongues, have Luxembourgers begun in earnest to engage in their own culture and history. Questions revolving around the native and the foreign, as well as encountering the other, have since become central themes, which are explored in Luxembourg’s literature mainly through non-fiction writings. Next to known and repeatedly rewarded authors such as Guy Helminger and Georges Hausemer, who appeal to a wide readership thanks to their literary travel books, amongst others, there are numerous other writers and cross-border themes to discover: works on the history of Luxembourg, from the occupation years to the declaration of the independent Grand Duchy in 1839, about the industrial revolution with the founding of the ARBED steel company in 1911 and the famous narrow-gauge railway, which transported pilgrims from the capital to the abbey town of Echternach. Goethe’s journey to Luxembourg and Victor Hugo’s travels to Vianden as well as the sensitive issue of collaboration with Nazi Germany during the Second World War are topics which have been analysed just as much as Luxembourg’s literature and film history. Biographies of famous personalities like actors René Deltgen und Thierry van Wervecke, top athlete and Olympic medal winner Josy Barthel or Tour de France rider and winner Charly Gaul, form as much a part of the successfully published non-fiction titles in recent years as do the life histories of respected artists, amongst others the Luxembourg-born American photographer Edward Steichen, director of the New York Museum of Modern Art (MoMa) from 1947 to 1962. His famous The Family of Man photo exhibition has been on permanent display in the Castle of Clervaux since 1994. Also published are guide books on current issues like health and nutrition, recipe books by internationally renowned chefs such as Léa Linster and René Mathieu and many others more. Expelled from Belgium on May 30th 1871 for having offered asylum at his residence in Brussels to the insurgents of the Paris Commune, whom were tracked by the reactionary French government, Victor Hugo (along with his son, daughter-inlaw, grandchildren, mistress and servants) seeks refuge on June 1st in Luxembourg where he had spent every summer as a tourist in several locations from 1862 to 1865. Despite the extremely hostile stance of conservative grand-ducal clerical circles, Victor Hugo is very warmly welcomed in Vianden on June 8th by his good friend, the progressive liberal deputy mayor Adolphe Pauly. Hugo and his family stay until August 22nd after which (besides litigating in Diekirch) they enjoy life as spa guests in Altwies/Mondorf until September 23rd, date of their eventual return to France.

Yves de Smet was born in Brussels in 1953. He has a PhD in Medicine and is a neuropsychiatric specialist. He is currently Head physician at the Neuropsychiatric Hospital in Ettelbruck. He wrote various scientific and literary publications. His areas of interest and dedication range from surrealism to art nouveau, the 19th century, Victor Hugo, history, literature and psychiatry.

Manifestement l’auteur s’était fort mal inspiré de ses prédécesseurs sans même jamais avoir mis les pieds à Vianden : il comparaît Vianden à Avignon, rachetait les ruines dix fois moins cher, datait la création de la république batave un an trop tôt, mettait le château sur la mauvaise rive de l’Our et appelait la Sûre la Sour ! De plus il n’avait pas vu l’église gothique dédiée à Nicolas dans le faubourg, construite à l’occasion de la division en 1256 de la paroisse de Roth (de laquelle dépendait jusqu’alors toute la ville de Vianden) en deux cures, celle de la ville haute de Vianden, dirigée par les trinitaires, et celle de Roth, dont dépendait la ville basse, dirigée par les templiers. L’auteur n’avait pas vu non plus dans la ville haute l’église également gothique du couvent des trinitaires, PAS FACILE DE fondé en 1248 par le comte Henri Ier de Vianden, église consacrée le 2 mai 1252 par le suffragant de l’évêque de Trèves sous l’invocation de la S’Y RETROUVER Sainte-Trinité et renfermant deux remarquables pierres tombales. L’une DANS L’HISTOIRE était celle de Henri de Nassau, un bâtard de cette illustre famille, mort en 1589 ; la pudeur d’un curé du lieu avait imposé à son effigie la plus DES COMTES étrange mutilation qu’ait jamais rêvée l’imagination d’un sacristain ! tonnait Pimpurniaux sans autre précision. L’autre représentait l’avant- ET DU CHÂTEAU dernière comtesse de Vianden, Marie de Spanheim, dame de Perwez- VIANDENOIS ! Grimbergen, morte le 21 octobre 1400, le jour des onze mille vierges comme le précisait l’épitaphe qui l’entourait ; épitaphe qui ne disait pas si la défunte avait ajouté une unité à ce nombre formidable ! s’inquiétait le même Pimpurniaux. Pas facile de s’y retrouver dans l’histoire des comtes et du château viandenois ! pour Montalembert, Vianden était le château ancestral des Nassau grâce au mariage en 1340 de Marguerite de Spanheim avec Othon II de Nassau-Dillenburg ; pour Le Magasin pittoresque, Vianden semblait le berceau des ancêtres des Nassau.

Clearly the author was very poorly inspired by his predecessors and had never even set foot in Vianden: he compares Vianden to Avignon, acquired the ruins for a tenth of the cost, dated the foundation of the Batavian Republic one year too early, placed the castle on the wrong bank of the Our river and called the Sûre the Sour! In addition, he had not noticed in the suburb the Gothic church dedicated to Nicholas, built on the occasion of the division in 1256 of the Roth parish (from which up until then the entire town of Vianden depended) into two cures, the one of upper Vianden, headed by the Trinitarians, and the one of Roth, from which depended the lower town, run by the Templars. Neither had the author seen in the upper town the equally Gothic church of the Trinitarian’s convent, founded in 1248 by Henri I of Vianden, a church consecrated on May 2nd in 1252 by the Archbishop of Trier’s suffragan under the invocation of the Holy Trinity and within NOT EASY TO which two remarkable tombstones were located. One belonged to Henri de Nassau, a bastard in this illustrious family who died in 1589; a local GET AROUND priest’s prudishness had imposed on his effigy the strangest mutilation THE HISTORY ever dreamt up by a sacristan’s imagination! thundered Pimpurniaux OF THE COUNTS without any further clarification. The other represented the penultimate of Vianden, Marie de Spanheim lady of Perwez-Grimbergen, AND CASTLE OF countess who died on October 21st in 1400 on the day of the eleven thousand virgins as the epitaph surrounding her specified; an epitaph which did VIANDEN! not say whether the deceased contributed to this formidable number! worried the same Pimpurniaux. Not easy to get around the history of the counts and castle of Vianden! according to Montalembert, Vianden was the ancestral castle of the Nassau thanks to the marriage in 1340 of Marguerite de Spanheim to Othon II from Nassau-Dillenburg; for Le Magasin pittoresque, Vianden appeared to be the cradle of the Nassau ancestors.

In 2007, Luxembourgish author Guy Helminger travels for three weeks to Iran in order to meet Persian author Amir Cheheltan as part of an exchange programme which aims to improve the mutual understanding of the respective other literature and culture. During his stay, Helminger kept a diary, took notes of encounters and conversations, describing everyday life in the streets and souks. Analysing the social and political situation in the Islamic Republic, he concludes that there’s more in Iran than only mullahs and their authoritarian regime. An amusing, empathic portrait of a contradictory country, accompanied by photos taken by the author.

In 2002 he was awarded the Prix Servais for Rost, in 2004 the 3sat-Preis in Klagenfurt, in 2006 the Prix du mérite culturel de la Ville d’Eschsur-Alzette and in 2016 the Dresdner Lyrikpreis. Several of his books have been translated into other languages, e. g. the collection of short stories Etwas fehlt immer into Serbian (2018) and the play Venezuela into French (2008).

Hier im Norden Teherans, im reicheren Teil der Stadt, lässt nicht gerade viel an eine islamische Republik denken. Weder gibt es unzählige Moscheen, die ins Auge stechen würden, noch ist der Ruf der Muezzins zu hören. Einige Frauen tragen den Tschador, aber die meisten haben ihr modebewusstes Kopftuch leger über die Haare geworfen, sind stark geschminkt. Wären da nicht die Schilder und Hinweise auf Farsi, die Kreuzung, an der ich stehe, könnte auch in Berlin-Kreuzberg sein. Aber die oberen Wächter haben bereits verkünden lassen, dass es bald wieder vorbei sei mit den teuflischen Reizen. Am 6. März werde wieder aufgeräumt und darauf geachtet, dass alle fortan ordentlich gekleidet seien und durch ihr Benehmen nicht der Prostitution Vorschub leisteten. Im Institut für Archäologie sagt man mir, dass diese Razzien jedes Jahr stattfinden. Dann kommen ganze Busladungen Polizisten und Helferinnen und es kann für die Betroffenen extrem unangenehm, ja gefährlich werden.

Genauso droht man bei Frühlingsbeginn regelmäßig, die illegal aus Afghanistan eingereisten Arbeiter hinauszuwerfen, schüchtert sie ein, aber Monate später schuften sie nach wie vor für einen Spottlohn in den Gräben und auf den Baustellen der Stadt. Das Regime pendelt zwischen hartem Durchgreifen und einem einschläfernden Laissezfaire hin und her. Das Volk im Ungewissen zu lassen, ist Strategie. Beispielsweise sind die großen Parabolantennen fürs Dach offiziell verboten, weil man mit ihnen Fernsehprogramme aus aller Welt empfangen kann, aber sie stehen auf allen Dächern. Werden sie in einem Viertel von der Polizei entfernt, kann man sich tags darauf eine neue besorgen und hat hoffentlich für den Rest des Jahres Ruhe. Es soll des Öfteren vorkommen, dass Leute sich ihre eigene Fernsehantenne auf dem Schwarzmarkt zurückkaufen.

Here, in the North of Tehran, in the richer districts of the city, there’s not much to remind you of an Islamic Republic. Neither are there many mosques to catch the eye, nor are calls of the muezzin to be heard. Some women wear the chador, but most of them have draped their fashion-conscious headscarves casually over their hair, have put lots of make-up on. If it weren’t for the traffic signs and indications in Farsi, the crossroads I’m standing at could also be in in Berlin-Kreuzberg. But the guards have already announced that it will be over again soon with these diabolical charms. On March 6th everything shall be straightened up and care taken to ensure everybody will dress decently from then on and not encourage prostitution through their behaviour. At the Archaeological Institute they tell me that these raids take place every year. Then, busloads of policemen and their female assistants arrive, and the situation can become extremely unpleasant and even dangerous for the persons concerned.

Likewise, at the beginning of spring, one routinely threatens to deport the illegally entered workers from Afghanistan, intimidates them, yet months later they keep on labouring in the City’s ditches and on its building sites for derisive pay. The regime fluctuates between harsh clampdowns and soporific laissez-faire. Leaving people in the lurch is strategy. For instance, the large satellite dishes meant for the roof are officially banned since they permit the reception of television programmes from all over the globe. Yet they are to be found on all the rooftops. In case the police remove them from one neighbourhood, one may acquire a new one the following day and hopefully spend the rest of the year in peace and quiet. It apparently happens, many a time, that people repurchase their own satellite dish on the black market.

Notes and Photos from Yemen GUY HELMINGER Yemen is dying. For years a war has been destroying this country and the most beautiful city Guy Helminger ever saw in his life: Saana. In 2009 Helminger lived as author in residence in the capital of Yemen, visited its surroundings, the city of Aden in the South and went on a trip to the Hadramaut to see Shibam, the “Chicago of the Desert”, a legendary city consisting of eight-storey high-rises built of clay. As always on his journeys, he took notes, wrote down conversations, described the political situation. In Yemen he chewed Qat, the drug that brings the whole country to a standstill every afternoon. He met authors and thus preserved in text and image a country, that nowadays has almost ceased to exist. Helminger’s book is the portrait of a dying country and its population, marked and exhausted by war.

Am 1920 aus Lehmziegeln errichteten Al Kathiri Sultanspalast vorbei, entferne ich mich vom Trubel der Hauptstraße, schlendere an Frauengruppen vorbei, die am Platz vorm Internetcafé sitzen, wandere die Straße hoch, die immer mehr zur Sandpiste wird, sich verzweigt und zwischen den Bauten verläuft. Hier sind sehr viele Häuser zerstört, zu Ruinen verfallen, reihen sich völlig marode aneinander. Andere wirken wie neu errichtet, mit geglätteten Fassaden und einem makellosen, weißen, mannshohen, ebenerdigen Gürtel. Die Ziegen heben kurz die Köpfe, wenn sie mich wahrnehmen, trotten weiter. Ab und an kündigt sich aus der Ferne ein Motorrad an, rast an mir vorbei, dann ist wieder Stille. Fast auf keinem der Fotos, die ich hier mache, sind Menschen zu sehen, nur leere Sandpisten zwischen Lehmbauten. Die Geschäfte schließen, die Gespräche verebben, bis nur noch einige wenige durch die Gassen hasten und auch sie verschwunden sind. Es ist Zeit für das Freitagsgebet. […] Zurück im Hotel warte ich, bis das Personal, vor allem der Koch, aus der Moschee zurück ist und ich vor meinem Rückflug nach Sanaa noch etwas essen kann. Kurz bevor wir abheben, erhalte ich eine SMS : Ich soll in einer Stunde zum Qat-Kauen zu Sheikh Dirhem kommen, einem der reichsten Männer des Jemen, wie ich mittler­ weile weiß. Das geht leider nicht und ich simse zurück, dass ich noch im Hadramaut bin.

Moving past the Sultan Al Kathiri palace, built from clay bricks in the 1920s, I leave the bustle on the main street behind, stroll past groups of women sitting in front of the internet café in the square, wander up the road as it increasingly turns into a sandy track, forks and peters out among the buildings. A great many houses are destroyed here, crumbled into ruins, one ramshackle wreck next to the other. Others appear newly built, with polished facades and a flawless, headhigh belt of white at ground floor level. The goats briefly raise their heads as they notice me, then trot on. Occasionally, a distant motorbike announces its presence, speeds past me before the silence returns. Hardly any of the photographs I take here have people in them; nothing to see but deserted sandy tracks between clay brick buildings. But further up, six men are playing volleyball, have fastened a completely shredded fishing net to two tall posts embedded between the paving stones. In the background, a house with a pillared balcony on the second floor. I scramble around among ruins for hours, work my way up the debris until I have a view across the city.

Approaching from the south, I make my way in a wide arc back into the city, where the markets are still bustling. But then the main road suddenly clears. The shops close, conversations fall silent, until just a few people are left hurrying through the alleys and then, even they vanish. Time for Friday prayers. […] Back at the hotel, I wait until the staff, above all the chef, returns from the mosque, so I can have a bite to eat before my flight back to Sanaa. Just before take-off I receive a SMS: I’m to come to Sheikh Dirhem’s house to chew Qat in an hour’s time. He’s one of the richest men in Yemen, as I know by now. Unfortunately, this is not possible, and I text back that I’m still in Hadhramaut.

My Tumour and I, Me and My Tumour, in Intensive Care for 33 Days, Some before and Way Too Few after GEORGES HAUSEMER & SUSANNE JASPERS Following his latest diagnosis with cancer, the writer Georges Hausemer decided in April 2016 to report on his affection in a blog. Published under the title My Tumour and I, which he changed a few months later into Me and My Tumour, feeling the tumour had no right to come first, he described his life with the disease up until a few weeks before his death in August 2018. Since Georges Hausemer could no longer tell his story to its end, his wife, the author Susanne Jaspers, played her part in documenting the period follow­ ing the last blog entry. A time marked by fear and hope, despair and confidence, by intensive care and internal medicine. What remains is infinite grief over the loss – and the hope for a reunion – perhaps, one day in Venice.

Georges Hausemer, born in Differdange in 1957, lived as an author, travel writer, translator and painter in Luxembourg, a small village in the northern Eifel and in San Sebastián in the Basque Country. In 2017, he was honoured with the Prix Batty Weber, Luxembourg’s most important distinction in the field of literature, for his complete works. He died in 2018. Susanne Jaspers, born in Aachen in 1970, works as a publisher, travel writer and author. She shuttles among Luxembourg, the northern Eifel and northern Spain. She was married to Georges Hausemer until his death in 2018.

SOWAS DENKEN ?

Teil 2 (Susanne Jaspers) Am dritten Tag auf der Intensivstation habe ich endlich eine Begegnung mit einem Arzt. Dr. H. ist jung, nimmt sich Zeit, erklärt uns die Situation ziemlich ausführlich und vor allem verständlich. Außerdem sieht er gut aus. Wie kann ich unter diesen Umständen nur sowas denken ? Dr. H. erläutert uns – wobei ich nicht genau weiß, was Du von diesen Erläuterungen mitbekommst und was nicht –, man müsse Deinen Körper in seinem derzeitigen Zustand mit einem Kartenhaus vergleichen, aus dem eine Karte nach der anderen herausgezogen wird. Die Karten sind in diesem Fall Deine Organe, die eins nach dem anderen zu versagen drohen und die man nun zu stabilisieren versuche. Mal ganz abgesehen von der „Grunderkrankung“, die man ins Visier nehmen werde, wenn die akute Gefahr gebannt sei. Diese Grunderkrankung, das ist natürlich Dein verfluchter Tumor.

Dr. H. is young, takes his time, explains the situation to us rather extensively and above all comprehensibly. What’s more, he’s good-looking. How can I think that under these circumstances? Dr. H. explains – although I am not quite sure what you catch of these explanations and what not –, that one has to compare your body in its current state to a house of cards, from which one card after another is being pulled out. In this case, the cards are your organs, which threaten to give out one by one and which they presently aim to stabilise. Not to mention the “ground sickness” which they will focus on once the imminent threat has been contained. This underlying disease, of course, is your damn tumour.

Gerd Hurm (* 1958) is a German scholar. He is professor of American literature, director of the Center for American Studies at the University of Trier and an advisory board member of the Obama Institute at the JGU Mainz. His publications include books and essays on modernism, urban studies, political rhetoric, and American post-war culture. A senior Fulbright scholar, he has been active teaching and lecturing in Germany, France, Switzerland, Luxembourg, Great Britain, and the United States.

Eigentlich ein Thema für eine Dissertation : Haben die Brüder Schleck ihre brüderlichen Bande in eine treibende Kraft verwandelt oder hat diese Beziehung sich eher nachteilig auf ihre beiderseitige Karriere ausgewirkt? Diese Frage hat die Welt des Radsports mehr als zehn Jahre lang gespalten. […] Die schönsten Kapitel ihrer gemeinsamen Zeit als Radprofis schreiben die Brüder auf den Straßen Frankreichs. Fünfmal starten sie Seite an Seite bei der Tour, zum ersten Mal 2008. Nachdem er in Hautacam einen Schwächeanfall erlitten hat, gibt sich Andy keinen Illusionen mehr hin, was das Gesamtklassement betrifft. Er macht das Beste draus und schlüpft in die Rolle des Edelhelfers. „Eine sehr bequeme Rolle, wenn du gute Beine hast.“ Der 23-Jährige erreicht die Alpen in Topform und im Weißen Trikot, das er in Jausiers an sich gerissen hat. Das von Fränk getragene Gelbe Trikot scheint seine Motivation noch zu verstärken. Andy nimmt mit zehn weiteren Fahrern die Alpe d’Huez in Angriff. Er fährt wie beflügelt, doch tut alles, um die Führung seines Bruders zu sichern, der von seinem eigenen Teamgefährten Carlos Sastre angegriffen wird. „Im Nachhinein betrachtet bin ich davon überzeugt, im Sinne unseres Teams gehandelt zu haben. Wir haben uns loyal gegenüber einem Teamgefährten verhalten, der sich nicht loyal gegenüber uns verhalten hat“, betont Andy. Obschon er glücklich darüber ist, das Weiße Trikot als bester Jungfahrer mit nach Hause zu holen, gibt es auch einiges, was Andy nach seiner ersten Grande Boucle bedauert : „Im Hinblick auf die Konkurrenz war es sicherlich seit Langem die Tour, die am leichtesten zu gewinnen war. Alberto hatte nicht teilgenommen.“

Actually a topic for a dissertation: did the Schleck brothers transform their fraternal ties into a driving force or did this relationship have a detrimental effect on both their careers? This question has split the world of cycling for over ten years. […] The brothers write the most beautiful chapters of their common time as professional cyclists on the roads of France. Five times they start side by side on the Tour, for the first time in 2008. After suffering a bout of weakness in Hautacam, Andy has no further illusions about his overall ranking. He makes the best of the situation and assumes the role of key assistant. “A very comfortable role, if you have good legs.” The 23-year-old reaches the Alps in top shape, wearing the white jersey which he seized in Jausiers. The yellow jersey worn by Fränk only seems to spur his motivation. Accompanied by ten more cyclists, Andy tackles the Alpe d’Huez. He rides as if he had wings, yet does what he can to secure the lead position of his brother, who is being attacked by his own teammate Carlos Sastre. “In hindsight, I’m convinced that we acted in the interests of our team. We were loyal to a teammate who was not being loyal to us”, stresses Andy.

René Mathieu is executive chef of the restaurant La Distillerie (1 Michelin star; 18/20 at Gault & Millau), located in the heart of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. In his first cookbook Végétal: Mes racines – Mes recettes, this creative chef develops his concept. His recipes are made with seasonal fruits and vegetables, as well as wild herbs that René Mathieu picks himself in the woods surrounding the Bourglinster Castle, that houses his restaurant. Meat and fish are mere supplements in his cuisine. Passionate about fashion, he conceives his recipes like a designer and starts out by sketching the dish. Hence, each of the book’s 48 recipes comes to life in a drawing and a photo of the preparation: The photos are taken by culinary photographer Mickaël Williquet and the book is superbly illustrated since it is enriched with virtual images thanks to augmented reality.

Born in 1961 in Marche-en-Famenne (Belgium), René Mathieu began his career in 1986 at the restaurant Le Capucin Gourmand in Baillonville. After having been the executive chef of the Grand Duke and the Grand Duchess of Luxembourg for three years, he became the executive chef of the two restaurants of the Bourglinster Castle. In 2010, René Mathieu was named “Chef of the Year”. In 2018, Gault & Millau awarded him the brilliant score of 18/20. Since 2012, La Distillerie holds a Michelin star.

„Dieses Buch ist kein Roman. Man braucht es folglich nicht von der ersten bis zur letzten Seite kontinuierlich zu lesen. Es kann Kapitel für Kapitel gelesen werden, ohne dass dabei eine bestimmte Ordnung verfolgt werden muss. Das Buch besteht aus sechs Teilen. Die drei ersten Teile beinhalten theoretische Angaben über Angst und Angststörungen, die drei übrigen Teile geben praktische Angaben und Ratschläge. Das Buch besteht aus 120 Kapiteln. “This book is not a novel. Therefore, it is not necessary to read the book continuously from the first to the last page. It can be read chapter by chapter without having to follow a certain order. The book consists of six parts. The first three parts contain theoretical information on anxiety and anxiety disorders, the other three parts give practical information and advice. The book consists of 120 chapters. In each chapter, a specific, self-contained topic is discussed in detail on the left side. The most important points are summarised in keywords on the right.

Each chapter is introduced with a headline intended to arouse the reader’s interest in the problem presented on the double page. Jean-Paul Meyer, born in Luxembourg in 1948, has a degree in Industrial Engineering from the University of Luxembourg. He spent his entire professional career at the Luxembourg railways which he left in 2010 as head of the CFL training centre. Die als „Charly“ bezeichnete Schmalspurbahn […] Sie erhielt ihren Spitznamen vom damaligen Regierungsmitglied Charles Rischard, der sich leidenschaftlich für den Bau von Schmalspurbahnen einsetzte. Der Baus des Charly verzögerte sich jedoch bis 1904 aufgrund von Unstimmigkeiten zwischen der Regierung und dem Stadtrat wegen der Kostenübernahme für den Bau der erforderlichen Adolphe-Brücke. Der Streckenbau erfolgte durch den Staat und wurde durch die Luxemburger Sekundärbahnen (LSB) betrieben. Charly stellte ein nützliches und unentbehrliches Bindeglied zwischen Wohn- und Arbeitsstätte, besonders für die Einwohner der Täler der Schwarzen Ernz und der Sauer,dar. Er verband eine angenehme Romantik mit dem bloßen Nutzen, in dem er die unbedingt notwendigen Wirtschaftsgüter auf seinem Schienenstrang beförderte.

From 1904 to 1954, the narrow gauge railway, known as “Charly”[…] It got its nickname from the former government member Charles Rischard, who was passionate about the construction of narrow gauge railways. The construction of the Charly, however, was delayed until 1904 due to disagreements between the government and city council as to the funding of the necessary Adolphe bridge. The construction works for the track were carried out by the state. It was operated by the Luxembourg secondary railways (LSB). Charly provided a useful and indispensable link between home and workplace, especially for the inhabitants of the valleys of the Black Ernz and the Sauer. It combined romance with pragmatism by transporting essential commodities over its network.

Contrairement à la Ligne Maginot, la Ligne Mareth est une fortification française très peu connue. Située dans le sud-tunisien à hauteur de Mareth, à la latitude de l’île de Djerba, cette ligne fortifiée a été envisagée dès 1934 pour mettre la Tunisie, alors protectorat français, à l’abri d’une attaque brusquée venue de Lybie (colonie italienne). S’appuyant sur le cours d’un oued dont les rives escarpées ont été aménagées en obstacle antichar, elle comporte une ceinture au sud de Gabès, mais surtout, de part et d’autre de Mareth, 49 points d’appui fortifiés totalisant 124 ouvrages bétonnés de tous types, des monts Matmata à la mer, sur 35 kilomètres. Implantée à l’initiative du commande Rime-Bruneau, réalisée par le Génie avec la seule énergie de la main d’œuvre militaire dotée de moyens matériels modestes, elle n’en est pas moins bien conçue. Opérationnelle, mais n’ayant pas été attaquée par les troupes fascistes de Mussolini en 1940, la ligne fortifiée fut démilitarisée. Elle devait être réarmée et âprement défendue quelques années plus tard […] affrontant la 8e armée britannique. Les conditions d’armistice imposaient la démilitarisation de toute la zone située entre la frontière et l’oued Akarit, et l’évacuation de tout le matériel et les munitions s’y trouvant, et ce avant le 10 juillet 1942. Les Italiens espéraient bien, avec un délai aussi court, pouvoir récupérer l’important matériel qui ne pourrait être évacué à temps. Ce fut une erreur, car le général Poupinel réussit l’exploit de retirer la totalité de son matériel dans les délais, et la commission d’armistice italienne ne trouva qu’une coquille vide. Seule la Marine perdit les trois canons de 138 de la batterie de Sidi Marmora, comme il est indiqué dans le chapitre la concernant. Elle eut beau prétendre que cette batterie, ne faisant pas partie de la Ligne Mareth, n’était pas concernée par les accords, les Italiens ne furent pas dupes. Les canons partirent pour la Lybie.

The armistice’s conditions ordained the demilitarization of the entire area between the border and the Wadi Akarit, and the removal of all equipment and ammunition found there, and this before July 10, 1942. Given such a short delay, the Italians hoped to recover the substantial equipment which couldn’t be evacuated on time. This was a miscalculation, as General Poupinel brilliantly succeeded in withdrawing all his equipment within the deadline, and the Italian armistice commission merely recovered an empty shell. Solely the Navy lost three of the 138 cannons of the Sidi Marmora battery, as is indicated in the related chapter. It could pretend all it wanted that this battery was not concerned by the agreements, it not being part of the Mareth line, the Italians were not dupes. The cannons departed for Libya.

Unlike the Maginot Line, the Mareth Line is an unknown system of fortifications built by France. Located in southern Tunisia at the height of Mareth, at the latitude of the island of Djerba, this fortified line was meant in 1934 to defend Tunisia, then under French protectorate, from a sudden attack from Libya (then an Italian colony). Based on the course of a wadi (Arabic term for valley) whose steep banks were turned into an anti-tank obstacle, it includes a belt south of Gabes, and especially, on both sides of Mareth, 124 concrete forts of all types – creating 49 fortified support units – are disposed along 35 kilometres between the Matmata hills and the sea. Implanted at the initiative of the Rime-Bruneau command and carried out by the engineers through modest material means and military manpower, it is none the less well conceived. Operational, however never attacked by Mussolini’s fascist troops in 1940, the fortified line was demilitarized. It was meant to be rearmed and stoutly defended a few years later […] facing the 8th British Army.

Les vendanges Le temps des vendanges en Italie s’étalait entre août et mi-novembre, avec cueillette des cépages précoces en août et des plus tardifs en septembre. Les Romains avaient tendance à pousser la maturité des raisins, donc à vendanger tardivement, car leur penchant pour les vins sucrés et alcoolisés nécessitait une forte concentration en sucres des raisins. Caton (De re rustica) préconisait des vendanges tardives et Virgile (Géorgiques) conseillait de vendanger aussi tard que possible. Comme lors de toute l’Antiquité, la religion jouait un rôle capital, les vendanges et toutes les autres étapes de la vinification étant régies par la bienveillance des dieux et placées sous leur haut protectorat. Jupiter, Minerve, Vénus et Bacchus étaient les grands responsables de la JUPITER, MINERVE, viticulture et des vins, et dictaient le début des vendanges qui se recoupait avec les Vinalia rustica (fêtes des vendanges) VÉNUS ET BACCHUS qui se tenaient du dixième jour des calendes de septembre ÉTAIENT LES GRANDS jusqu’aux ides d’octobre. Wine harvest In Italy the wine harvest took place between August and mid-November, with the early grape varieties being picked in August and the later ones in September. The Romans tended to push for a greater ripeness in their grapes, and thus to harvest late, because their penchant for sweeter wines with higher alcohol content necessitated that the grapes had a high concentration of sugars. Cato (in his De re rustica) advocated late harvesting and Virgil (in his Georgics) recommended that people pick their grapes as late as possible. As in all periods of Antiquity, religion played a key role in this, since the wine harvest and all other stages of winemaking were dependent on the goodwill of the gods and placed under their protection. Jupiter, Minerva, Venus and Bacchus were the JUPITER, gods in charge of viticulture and wine, and they determined the date MINERVA, VENUS of the beginning of the harvest, which overlapped with the Vinalia rustica (harvest celebrations) held from the tenth day of the calends of AND BACCHUS September until the ides of October. The purpose of this book is to present several periods of fortification in Corsica. One of the crowning achievements of the Corsican fortifications, the defensive towers along its coastline commonly known as the “Genoese towers” are being reviewed. The fortification of towns, citadels and isolated forts will also be examined in detail. Each presentation is complemented by a chronological overview richly illustrated by maps and each review itself concludes with a photographic visit of the remains still visible to this day. Little known and almost never been studied, the different coastal defence batteries, built between the seventeenth and the twentieth century, show an effort to protect the main ports of the island. The last chapter presents the casemates built between 1932 and 1940 by the French and in 1943 by the Italians to defend the coastline and some key features of their interior.

MICHEL TERCÉ  Fortified Corsica

Michel Tercé was born in southwestern France in 1951. He mostly lived in Tarbes where he spent all of his school years. In 1969, he enrolled in the Prytanée militaire de La Flèche to prepare for the entrance examination at the Special Military School of Saint-Cyr. Admitted in 1971, after his two years of study in Coëtquidan, he opted for the infantry branch of the armed forces and completed one year of training at the École d’Application de l’Infanterie in Montpellier. He was then assigned to the regiment in Lille for 4 years, then again to Coëtquidan as an instructor, before returning to Lille for 3 years. These assignments were followed by postings at commando training centres in Trier and Bonifacio, at the Military Staff in Châlons-sur-Marne, at Military Security and another military school in Limoges and Strasbourg. He ended his military career in Strasbourg in late 2001, as a Lieutenant-Colonel.

Le but de cet ouvrage est de montrer les différentes époques de la fortification en Corse, depuis les réalisations les plus anciennes de l’Âge du bronze jusqu’aux casemates construites par l’occupant italien. Le premier chapitre traite des périodes anciennes ainsi que des très nombreuses constructions du Moyen Âge. Les châteaux forts, les tours des villages, les maisons fortes et les tours de l’intérieur seront abordés dans ce qui reste de plus représentatif de ces centaines de constructions défensives. L’une des réalisations « phare » de la fortification en Corse, les tours de défense du littoral communément appelées « tours génoises », va être abordée dans l’optique des caractéristiques générales de ces tours et dans la représentation de chacune. La fortification des villes, citadelles et forts isolés, va être plus détaillée, chaque réalisation bénéficiant d’un rappel chronologique argumenté de plans et se terminant par une visite de ce qui reste visible actuellement.

The purpose of this book is to present several periods of fortification in Corsica, from the first Bronze Age settlements to the casemates built by the Italian occupant. The first chapter aims to illustrate ancient time periods, as well as to present several structures of the Middle Ages. Hundreds of the most representative defensive buildings such as fortified castles, village towers, stronghold houses and inner towers are being reviewed. One of the crowning achievements of the Corsican fortifications are the defensive towers along its coast line. They are commonly known as the “Genoese towers” and their general characteristics are examined and exemplified. The fortification of towns, citadels and isolated forts will also be examined in detail. Each presentation is complemented by a chronological overview richly illustrated by maps and each review itself concludes with a photographic visit of the remains still visible to this day.

The best Luxembourgish books in the three categories Literature, Non-fiction as well as Children’s Books and Literature for Young Adults are selected by a panel of experts. A special prize for Design/Graphic, and a prize “Coup de coeur” may be awarded additionally. An audience prize is granted following the votes cast online by readers across all categories. European Union Prize for Literature (EUPL) The European Union Prize for Literature (EUPL), which is co-financed by the Creative Europe programme of the European Commission, aims to highlight the excellence of Europe’s contemporary literature in the field of fiction and to encourage greater interest in non-national literary works. Since its creation in 2009, 108 emerging authors from all over Europe have been awarded the Prize.
