Graphic design : Studio Polenta Save the date: the 20th edition of the Nuit des Musées will take place on Saturday 10th October 2020.
Dear visitor, Since its first edition in 2001, the Nuit des Musées in Luxembourg City has become the most anticipated annual event for culture and heritage enthusiasts. Throughout the evening, visit or revisit the capital’s museums and become enticed by an exceptionally rich programme: from guided museum tours, workshops, screenings, tastings, and live shows to nocturnal activities accompanied by a DJ, it will be an unforgettable and enjoyable night. Inspired by this year’s theme “Museums – be moved”, museums turn into platforms open to any kind of movement: physical, emotional, and intellectual. Linked to the theme of the 19th edition, the traditional “coup de coeur” visits are going to be presented by sportsmen and women. Seven athletes from various sports disciplines slip into the role of guides and present their favourite exhibits in a museum of their choice. So, on Saturday 12 October 2019, museums will be open until 01h00, making for a night of discovery filled with art, culture, history and nature. For those who want to keep going, Casino Luxembourg Forum d'art contemporain invites you to a musical all-nighter until 03h00 with a DJ set by Katy De Jesus. Enjoy! d’stater muséeën

The 19th-century bourgeois villa with its contemporary extension is located in the heart of the city, in the middle of a historic park inviting you to relax. The exhibitions organised at Villa Vauban draw on collections consisting mainly of 17th-century Dutch works and 19th-century French history and landscape paintings. The museum favours variable exhibition formats, allowing the works to be explored from different angles. Temporary exhibitions include loans from major international collections. A varied programme of activities awaits the visitor.
EXHIBITIONS > ELINA BROTHERUS. PHOTOGRAPHS EUROPEAN MONTH OF PHOTOGRAPHY LUXEMBOURG 2019 UNTIL 13.10.2019
As part of the European Month of Photography 2019, Villa Vauban presents insights into the fascinating work of award-winning Finnish artist Elina Brotherus (*1972). In the form of photographic series, she deals with her biography, her body, the landscape and motifs from the history of art. Her own person is always the subject of the photographic series, so that the artist stands both in front of and behind the camera. The scenes of an uncompromising, reduced aesthetic radiate melancholy, but despite their sobriety also emotion and warmth, offering the viewer manifold possibilities for association and identification. The exhibition features works from 1998 to 2017.

Casino Luxembourg – Forum d’art contemporain, the flagship contemporary art institution in Luxembourg, is dedicated exclusively to contemporary creation. The art centre holds exhibitions with an international programme of mainly younger-generation artists. The venue also houses a library and reading room (InfoLab), a bookshop, and a BlackBox projection space devoted to artists’ videos. In addition to the exhibitions, a vast programme of lectures, master classes, creative workshops and other encounters complements the cycle of exhibitions and ensures direct contact between the artists and the public, which is essential for the comprehension of today’s art.
> IF THEN ELSE AN EXHIBITION BY THE BELGIAN ARTIST COLLECTIVE LAB[AU] UNTIL 05.01.2020
LAb[au] is composed of Manuel Abendroth, Jérôme Decock and Els Vermang, based in Brussels. In their practice, the artists investigate the relation between art and language not only by means of written words and other forms of coded language, but also through signs. Likewise, they take a linguistic approach, employing information and communication science in the field of art.
> MONA YOUNG-EUN KIM – TOO MUCH AND NOT ENOUGH A 360° VIDEO INSTALLATION IN VIRTUAL REALITY UNTIL 02.12.2019
Taking Vivaldi’s Four Seasons and the Venice Lagoon as a starting point, Too much and not enough explores the conflict between the lack and excess of two essential elements of life: water and sun. As a futuristic explorer, armed with selfie sticks and tripods, among others, the artist walks through places with potentially fragile ecosystems, alternating between canals and worldly life in this lagoon so prized since the dawn of time.
> THE OUROBOROS A VIDEO EXHIBITION AT CASINO’S BLACKBOX UNTIL 28.10.2019
LAb[au], One of a Billion Days, 2015
The Ouroboros is an international joint exhibition that marks the second phase of the 2018-2019 Taiwan-Luxembourg Exchange Programme. With the imagery of the ouroboros (snail swallowing its tail) as its overarching theme, the exhibition explores the question of human survival through the artists’ observations on the realities and phenomena of today’s world.

PERMANENT EXHIBITIONS > THE LUXEMBOURG STORY. MORE THAN 1000 YEARS OF URBAN HISTORY
On the three lower levels of the museum as well as in a space devoted to the current town planning, the exhibition tells the eventful history of the city of Luxembourg, from its origins in the 10th century to the present day. By following the chronology of urban development, divided into four major periods and 17 topics, the exhibition focuses on the most important and characteristic aspects of each epoch. A mobile application offers different guided tours.
Roosevelt Quai 1 / Cathédrale
The museum, located in the heart of the old town, is housed in a restored complex of historic houses. On three levels, partly carved in the rock, visitors discover the history of the city through original objects and topographical reconstructions as well as a mobile application. Temporary exhibitions are regularly held on the two upper levels.

TEMPORARY EXHIBITIONS > ONS SCHUEBERFOUER A FAIR LIKE NO OTHER UNTIL 29.03.2020
> MUSICAL PERFORMANCE 18H00 – 01H00
The “Schueberfouer”, founded as a trade fair in 1340 by John the Blind, evolved in the course of the 19th century into a pure amusement fair, which today is one of the most important in Europe. The exhibition presents the history of showmanship and the technical changes in the rides, illustrated by nostalgic carousels, ship swings or roller coaster cars. Historical photos, postcards, posters and film footage provide an insight into the amusements of bygone times.
To celebrate the arrival of Melusina at the Lëtzebuerg City Museum, children can make a mermaid in origami style. From 6 years on, for accompanied children from 4 years on. Without registration.

The exhibition highlights the extraordinary collection of the former director of the Eich ironworks Édouard Metz (1831–1895), who during his lifetime collected about three hundred 16th- to 19th-century firebacks and stove plates, produced in the old Duchy of Luxembourg and neighbouring areas. Firebacks give an insight into the material life and mentalities of past times: from the production of iron, the living conditions and heating technology to the iconography and the artistic models of the motifs shown on them (with reference to religion, heraldry, mythology and historical events).

TEMPORARY EXHIBITIONS > #WIELEWATMIRSINN 100 YEARS OF UNIVERSAL SUFFRAGE IN LUXEMBOURG (1919-2019) UNTIL 06.09.2020
To many of us, voting or running for an office in order to stand up for your convictions is considered a vested right which tends to appear trivial. However, this has not always been the case. For a long time, the right to vote had been an undisputed privilege of the richest men, excluding women on principle. It was not until 1919 that Luxembourg introduced universal suffrage. On the occasion of the hundredth anniversary of this decisive democratic breakthrough, the National Museum of History and Art is organising a major exhibition in cooperation with the Chamber of Deputies entitled #wielewatmirsinn - 100 Years of Universal Suffrage. Discover the history of the right to vote in Luxembourg from the French Revolution to the present day on more than 650m2.
> THE LUXEMBOURG SECESSION SPECIAL DISPLAY - TRIBUTE TO NICO KLOPP UNTIL 22.12.2019
The Luxembourg Secession dates back to 1926 when a number of artists distanced themselves from Cercle Artistique du Luxembourg (C.A.L.) founded in 1893. In total, the group organized three Salons in 1927, 1929 and 1930. They mainly focused on painting, sculpture and, to a lesser degree, decorative arts. The Secessionists will however reunite with the artists of the C.A.L. at the Salon of 1930. Within the scope of this exhibition presented in the Kutter rooms (floor +2), the MNHA looks in more detail at one of the movement's leading artists, Nico Klopp (1894-1930). On the occasion of the 125th anniversary of his birth, a special display in the Art in Luxembourg Section (Wiltheim Wing) pays tribute to him.

By reflecting the state of current research in natural history in general and the museum's collections in particular, permanent exhibitions provide a global perspective on current topics such as evolution and biodiversity. The new arrangement enables to better display the variety of collections and encourages a new look at nature, its history and study. The mission of the "natur musée" is to raise environmental awareness and contribute to the conservation of the natural heritage. The exhibitions serve as a direct interface between the public and the actors of scientific production in the museum, while the division of subjects now only follows scientific disciplines very freely. The collections of the National Museum of Natural History reflect more than 160 years of the Institute's history and above all the dynamism and commitment of its curators and their collaborators. Collection development can be reconstructed by comparing the various inventories established over 160 years ago with the current content of the collections. The following attributes characterize the current collection: regional, scientific, heritage, educational, aesthetic and historical.

The National Museum of Natural History has an impressive collection of birds: about 3,500 specimens of 1,300 different species are preserved in the museum, which represents about 10 percent of all known bird species. At first sight, birds should therefore be the most well known animals to the general public, especially since with their often attractive colours and songs they do not go unnoticed in nature. However, the biology of birds still hides countless secrets that will be revealed in the exhibition.

An exceptional historic landmark, the restored remains of Fort Thüngen, built in 1732-33, has been hosting the Museum Dräi Eechelen Fortress, History, Identities since 2012. The tour through the casemates documents the history of the fortress and its importance for the territorial development of the country and its identity. The architectural complex of the historic building itself features as the main exhibit, compromising a spectacular network of underground tunnels which remain in a state similar to its last modification in 1836/37.
PERMANENT COLLECTION In the permanent exhibition, each casemate illustrates a period in the history of the fortress, highlighting links to the general history of the city. The itinerary starts in the Middle Ages with the invasion by the Burgundians in 1443 and ends with the construction of the Adolphe Bridge in 1903. Around 600 objects and original documents, many of them previously unseen, testify to the richness of the museum's collections. A specifically fitted out area hosts photographs illustrating the fortress just before and during its demolition. The multimedia area invites the visitor to consult an interactive database as well as audiovisual documents containing subjects discussed in the museum.

Cannons belong to the realm of the imaginary, too. Based on the adventurous voyage of a three-pounder gun, fired for the last time during the 101-gun salute on the occasion of Grand Duke Jean’s birth on the 6th January 1921, the exhibition retraces the constant evolution of the artillery from the end of the Middle Ages until the threshold of the 20th century. During Burgundian, Spanish, French, Austrian, Dutch and Prussian rule, and through baptisms of fire – the siege of 1684 and the blockade of 1795 – guns are captured and recaptured, exchanged, sold, and melt down.

> ANRI SALA LE TEMPS COUDÉ UNTIL 05.01.2020
Over the past two decades Anri Sala (b. 1974, Tirana) has created an exceptional body of films and installations in which sound, music and the projected image come together to express themes of lived and historic time. This exhibition, which extends over two floors of Mudam, presents major installations, film works and drawings created by Sala in the past five years. Entitled Le Temps coudé, borrowing from the French phrase ‘faire un coude’, refers to warps or bends in our experience of what we see, hear and know.
