The Faculty of Health Sciences was established by the Slovenian Parliament in 1993as 2-year higher education institution. In November of the same year, the new member of the University of Maribor launched a 2-year higher education study programme Nursing Care. Following the adoption of the Decree on the Re-constitution of the University of Maribor in 1994, the 2-year Višjazdravstvenašola became a 3-year institution (Visokazdravstvenašola), and in the academic year 1999/2000 introduced, as the first higher education institution in Slovenia, postgraduate study programmes in nursing and health sciences. The school is a pioneer in the introduction of simulations in the teaching and learning process, and this kind of linking theory and practice has continued since 2005.

The Faculty’s vision is to become a leading, recognizable and desirable educational and research institution, especially in Slovenia and the Western Balkan countries, and be thus comparable with similar EU educational institutions. With its teachers and collaborators, students and mentors from clinical and other educational institutions the Faculty continues its involvement, as an equal partner, in the interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary development of the science and art of nursing and health care.

5.2.1 Short description The basic aim of the program is to produce graduates who are, in accordance with the competences acquired in the framework of the study programme, needed by health, social and other institutions that will employ the graduates with a purpose to efficiently and effectively operate and thus achieve their objectives. Since an organization operates as an open system, and because it consists
of individual interrelated parts it is clear that all parts of the organization must be well managed which clearly points to the need for professionals at all levels of management and administration. Graduates will have the ability to apply research methods, procedures and processes, the ability of critical thinking and assessment in their work environment, and the ability to conduct work process analyses, synthesize and forecast solutions and consequences of such knowledge transfer into practice. They will be able to work in a team and be autonomous in carrying out their professional work. Also, through the study programme whey will acquire the knowledge and skills that will have an optimal influence on the development of communication abilities and skills, especially as regards communication in the workplace with the use of ethical reflection and an awareness of commitment to professional ethics. Similarly, graduates will acquire the ability for solving real work problems by using scientific methods and procedures, basic knowledge in the professional field and the ability to integrate knowledge from different fields with
the field of management of health and social organizations.

6. Advantages of Studying at FHS UM
26
Study at the Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Maribor is a great advantage for students as they study at the first faculty of health sciences in Slovenia, and one of the leading health-related higher education institutions in the country. The Faculty provides students with opportunities to participate in numerous activities at the Faculty, in Slovenia and abroad.
6.1 International cooperation and student exchange In 20 years of its existence, the Faculty participated in a large number of already implemented and on-going projects at both domestic and international level, and students also participated in these projects. For its success
in the implementation of international projects, the Faculty received a national “Apple of Quality” award in 2007 and 2010, and the prestigious title “Partner in Europe” awarded by the European Commission in 2009.
has the possibility of implementing an organized tutoring system in a new, well equipped tutorial room, with trained tutors (students and teachers) who will be, at their own will, participate in the tutorial process.
The Faculty provides and promotes international exchange / mobility through the Erasmus program for students and academic staff and for other Faculty staff. Until today, 14 our students visited a foreign partner institution, 20 foreign students visited FHS UM, 60 members of our staff visited a foreign partner institution and 34 teachers and other staff members from foreign partner institutions have visited FHS UM.
6.3 Alumni Club of the Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Maribor
6.2 Tutoring at the Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Maribor In the academic year 2012/2013, the Faculty began to implement a tutorial system which has actually been present in all years of the Faculty’s existence. The Faculty provides support and guidance to students who have study problems or need advice as regards their career and personal development and achievement of their goals. Today, the Faculty
The Faculty’s Alumni Club connects students, graduates, academic and other Faculty staff. This connectedness, also after the completion of the study, contributes to the transfer of knowledge and experience, to the development and promotion of the Faculty, and maintains a sense of belonging to the Faculty.
6.4 Simulation Center of the Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Maribor In education with the support of simulations, different modern technology is used to enhance the quality and effectiveness of teaching and learning. Instruction takes place in a controlled environment and eventual students’ mistakes in decision-making cannot harm the patient. The students learn from the
mistakes that might be fatal in real clinical settings. Procedures and interventions are carried out on special models that are relatively complex and require special classrooms, i.e. simulation centres. In a simulation centre, the students acquire knowledge and skills in various fields of nursing. It is important that students make their first, inexperienced steps in the treatment of patients not on the patients themselves, but in an environment that is as similar as possible to a real clinical setting.
7. Student council at FHS UM
• maintaining connectedness and communication between students, • cultivating a sense of belonging to the Faculty, • promotion of the Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Maribor and nursing care, • development of individuals,
8. What can the University of Maribor offer me? The University of Maribor is the second largest and second oldest university in Slovenia. It has about 20,000 students and approx. 1,700 employees, and thus has a very important role in the region. Since the Faculty of Health Sciences is a member of the University of Maribor, our students can benefit from all the advantages of university environment as a whole. The University offers a remarkable choice of study allowing each student to choose courses offered by other faculties,
