In 2001, Guatemalan singer and songwriter Gaby Moreno left her country for Los Angeles, where she got into the local music scene and took classes at the Musicians Institute. Her soulful vocals and ability to switch languages and genres have made her a rising star.

Moreno is part of a batch of young, soulful Latina singers whose voices evoke Fiona Apple or Tori Amos. On her new album, though, Moreno also channels her inner Aretha. Her songs have been used on popular TV shows, and she has two albums out; her most recent is titled Illustrated Songs. Moreno's musical life began when she was 13, on a family vacation in New York. She says she and her family were walking through Times Square one night when something caught her eye:"After I heard an African-‐American woman singing on the street, I went to the nearest record store, saw they had a blues aisle and bought a bunch of CDs: The first song I put on back home was Koko Taylor’s ‘Wang Dang Doodle.’ When we play live, it’s one of my favorite covers.”

In 2006, she won the John Lennon Songwriting Contest with her song “Escondidos,” first in the Latin category, then overall. That success gave her the confidence to produce her debut album, Still The Unknown. The album was played on the radio and got excellent reviews praising its sparse, elegant sound and Moreno’s quietly soulful vocals. The record’s success led to opening slots on tours with Tracy Chapman and Ani DiFranco. In 2010, an instrumental piece Moreno wrote with musician friend Vincent Jones was selected as the theme for the new NBC show "Parks and Recreation". The theme earned an Emmy Nomination. Moreno’s tunes were also used on E!’s "Kourtney and Khloe Take Miami", "Lincoln Heights" and "Ghost Whisperer" on ABC and MTV’s The Hills.

In the summer of 2010, Moreno played the Roskilde Festival in Denmark with singer/composer Van Dyke Parks. After intensively touring Europe promoting Still The Unknown and Illustrated Songs she recorded a duet with Latin-‐pop Superstar Ricardo Arjona which was an instant hit in the whole of Latin America. With the label Metamorfosis it is that she st nd records her 1 full Spanish album “Postales” in 2012. Later in In 2012 she was asked by Hugh Laurie to record on his 2 album ‘Didn’t It Rain’ and to become a member of the Copper Bottom Band and to tour the world in 2013 and 2014. In 2013 she wins a Latin Grammy for Best New Artist.

In the fall of 2014 she records ‘Posadas” a Christmas album full of great Spanish and Latin American Christmas songs. Gaby Moreno will record soon a brand new album with star producer Gabriel Roth ( Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings) that is expected to be released in the spring of 2015.
