No Maharaj! Being a Vidushak all my life, for the first time ive encountered an incidence more humorous than my own birth.

Vidushaka Kanduka, being a Vidushak have you ever encountered this kind of humor?

What? Do you understand the meanig of your unpleasant speech Yuvraaj?

What about you Manduka! Why are you quite?

After the death of Maharaj Chandraketu, this loyal servant Krishnanta has worked day and night in your service.

This is how you treat me for taking care of your Kingdom for 15 years!

How can you not understand this?

All I expect you to do is become a man of honor and carry forward the brave legacy of your forefathers.

Your speech suggests that im someone who is in fight for the crown, a monster and for that Im putting you through immense torcher so that you lose interest in the Royalservice and indirectly demoralizing your Kingship.

These strict mental, intellectual, physical and warcraft lessons are so that you master the qualities of a great King. Ignoring my own son and concentrating on your education seems to you as atrocities, is my unfortune!

Maharaj, the king of seasons, Spring has just arrived! The monsoon which will wet his feet has time to arrive. Has anyone ever heard a Manduk’s voice before the monsoon arrives and fills the forest pits with dirty water? What will Manduk talk about at this time, brains...???

Absolutely right! According to Kanduk, whose nature is to jump in the air with every spank, jumping in any season is not possible for this Manduk. And thats why Maharaj,I suggest you enjoy Kanduk’s performance for now. This Manduk will come jumping for your service at the right time!

a…

Hahah

Alright then. The light is falling. Go Kanduk and Manduk, take Yuvraaj Kunal to his chamber and entertain him to release the stress he had to go through during the day.

A graphic design student, in addition to a thorough grounding in design abilities and theoretical issues, undertakes the study of the cultural and historical context in which designers need to function, as well as of the social and ethical factors that influence design decisions. The ultimate aim is to stimulate the development of independent critical judgment, sound research skills, the ability to think creatively and practice design as a professional.

The last decade or so has witnessed a near total transformation in the way a graphic designer works. The expansion and application of the electronic media has made graphic reproduction technologies more accessible to the designer. Paradoxically, traditional skills have become more necessary than before. Quality and creative solutions contextual to the user’s needs are still a basic human input. The fundamental importance of creating a visual vocabulary through drawing, the development of aesthetic judgment, values of form, proportion, image and word have become an integral part of learning graphic design at NID.

During their period of study, students in graphic design are encouraged to work on a variety of projects, majoring in the selected sub-domain of graphic design. The areas covered include typography & type design, publication design, image making, illustration, photography, packaging, print design, corporate identity, branding and information & communication systems like signage or way finding. Students, on successful completion of the programme would have acquired the competencies to find placements with leading graphic design agencies working in the area of branding, publication houses, and communication design firms. They could also start their own design studios.

‘Rape victim’s sexual history not relevant’ REVISED MANUAL State govt orders doctors to be more sensitive towards victims STATE SUBMITS REVISED PROFORMAS, MANUAL TO HIGH COURT

Menaka Rao ■ menaka.rao@hindustantimes.com

THE STATE GOVERNMENT has directed government doctors, who conduct medical examinations of rape victims, to do away with the practice of noting whether the victim is habituated to sexual intercourse

MUMBAI: In a significant move, the

state government has directed government doctors who conduct medical examinations of rape victims to do away with the practice of noting whether the victim is habituated to sexual intercourse. The move is aimed at extending sensitive treatment to victims of rape and sexual assault and will be reflected in the manual referred to by doctors while examining victims. An eight-member stateappointed committee headed by Dr SD Nanandkar, head of forensic medicine department, JJ Hospital, revised the manual after considering suggestions given by the non-governmental organisation, Centre for Enquiry into Health and Allied Themes (CEHAT). The directive is part of other modifications to the manual finalised at meetings held by the committee. The committee also provided a detailed chart on why they did not accept some of the suggestions. The committee was appointed by the Directorate of Health Services (DHS) on directions passed by the Nagpur bench of the Bombay high court in a public interest litigation filed by advocate Vijay Patiat and social worker, Dr Ranjana Pardhi. The revised manual states, “It has been observed that most examining doctors write their opinion in their medico-legal

THE STATE-APPOINTED committee, which revised the manual, considered the sug-

report to the effect that she [the victim] is habituated to sexual intercourse [or not]. It must be remembered that this opinion has no relevance at all whatsoever to the offence.” The committee cited a 2005 judgment of the Supreme Court in relation to a case from Uttar Pradesh where the court stated that the victim being “accustomed to sexual intercourse is not a determinative question. Even if it is hypothetically accepted that victim has lost virginity earlier, it need not and cannot in law, give licence to any person to rape her.” A few more procedural aspects related to age determination of the victim, among others have been added. Maharashtra is the first state in the country to make forensic examination of sexual assault victims more victim-friendly. Apart from the sensitising doctors conducting the procedure, the committee has drawn seven detailed proformas and formats to be followed by medical officers examining the victim and the accused.

Unaided schools move HC MUMBAI: The Unaided Schools Forum (USF), representing 139 private unaided schools affiliated to boards such as CBSE, ICSE, IB, IGCSE, CIE, have moved the Bombay high court seeking complete independence from interference by the state government in their functioning.

A division bench of justice BH Marlapalle and justice Nishita Mhatre directed the state government to file an affidavit in reply to the petition. The bench also slapped a fine of Rs4,000 on the state government for failing to file the reply although time was sought on three occasions HTC earlier.

gestions given by the NGO, Centre for Enquiry into Health and Allied Themes (CEHAT) THE STATE GOVERNMENT submitted the revised proformas and manual to examine rape victims to the Nagpur bench of the Bombay high court on Wednesday

A DIVISION BENCH of justice SA Bobade and MN Gilani ordered the state to fix a meeting of the committee members with the Directorate of Health Services in consultation with the law and judiciary department to seek suggestions pertaining to the legal language in the manual and proforma before December 7, said advocate Kalpana Pathak, who appeared for the petitioners.

KOLKATA: The state government will reintroduce merit scholarship or britti pariksha for Class 4 students to ensure that schools from where students are doing well are rewarded and schools where students could not perform well are questioned. “We will introduce britti pariksha by the end of this academic session. Student to be promoted to Class 5 would appear for the exam. This exam is, however, not meant to detain any student in class but to adjudge his or her learning level and merit,” said Manik Bhattacharya, president of the West Bengal Board of Primary Education (WBBPE). “Since the performance of students depends on how well teachers have taught them in class, schools in which students fare well should be rewarded and the schools in which students would not be doing well would be pulled up,” he said. To begin with, the state government has decided that each student who tops from all the 730 circles of primary school in Bengal would be awarded an annual scholarship of R1,000. “Primary education in all government-aided primary schools in Bengal is free. The school uniform and the books too are provided by the state and the students are provided free meal in schools under the midday meal scheme. Though students don’t have any expenses, this scholarship would be a recognition of the child’s talent at an early age and would encourage him/her to study well in future and not quit studies midway,” Bhattacharya said. “It is our duty to encourage the first generation learners of poor families to continue with education.” “This used to be a hugely popular exam but was discontinued by the Left Front government. By reintroducing, it we hope to fulfil the long-standing demand of all the parents of primary schoolchildren. This will also encourage the parents to ensure that their children do not drop out of school,” said Bhattacharya.

KOLKATA: Eight police stations under Kolkata Police have been identified as the most trouble-prone during Kali Puja. Most Kali pujas in these areas are being organised without police or fire brigade permission. The police had experienced most law and order problems in areas under Lake, Amherst Street, Manicktala, Narikeldanga, Ultadanga, Beniapukur, Tollygunge and Beliaghata police stations during Kali Puja. “As most of the puja committees do not even bother to take police permission, the police have no way to keep vigil on the activities of the puja committee members,” said an officer-in-charge of east and eastern suburban division. The police are flooded with cases such as assault, beating, assault with deadly weapons, abusing, eve teasing and molestation and other such behaviour under influence of alcohol. After Trinamool Congress came to power, most of the groups and sub-groups led by local leaders will be organise Kali Puja in these areas. “We are already getting complaints of demanding a high amount of donation from each groups,” said an officer-incharge. all the universities will ensure that the courts of all state universities do not have any berth for political representatives. The court is the highest body for all state universities. Some state universities, such as Calcutta University, have a senate, which is equivalent to a court. But both senates and courts have representations from various sections of society in the form of reserved berths in the bodies, including local councillors and MLAs, besides representatives of teachers’ associations and officers’ associations – all of whom have

warned all these puja organisers after receiving complaints of extortion. “If they do not stop demanding donation we will start specific case of extortion, said the O-C. The police have observed a rise in petty crimes during Kali puja. “Most of the crimes are committed under the influence of alcohol. Handling such petty crimes is another challenge for Kolkata Police,” the O-C said. Apart from such crimes, the police are also worried about the bursting sound crackers from different highrises in these localities. The police have already contacted different associations of residential complexes and asked them not to burst sound crackers from the roof of the highrises. The police have also asked the residents of these highrises to lock the roof during Kali Puja night so that no one can use the roof for bursting banned sound crackers. The police have already short-listed such highrise buildings or housing complexes where residents had burst sound crackers indiscriminately. “We are worried about these highrises because we have to keep vigil on them with limited force. Our strength has been decreased as many of our police personnel have been taken away for newly formed police stations,” said the O-C.

Till date, the state universities in Bengal have no provision for impeaching, or removing, a vicechancellor from office. The ordinance would also aim at bringing all teaching appointments at universities under a University Service Commission. Unless that is done, appointments of teachers will be made at all state universities — excluding Presidency — through a selection committee. Faculty appointments at Presidency University will be done through search committees set up for each subject with renowned academics.

FIRE IN METRO RAIL NOAPARA CAR SHED letters@hindustantimes.com

Trouble for Metro Railways does not seem to end. Snags and delays are common occurrences. To add to that, one of the four air-conditioned AC rakes of Kolkata Metro got grounded after a minor fire broke out from the under gear located below the engine on Wednesday evening. Metro officials said that around 4.45 pm when the rake concerned was entering the Noyapara car shed, officials noticed smoke coming out of the under gear located below the engine. Soon sparks of fire was also observed. Five fire tenders rushed to the spot to bring the situation under control in 30 minutes. “An investigation is on to find out the possible reasons behind the fire and extent of damage,” said Metro railway spokesperson Protyush Ghosh.

Two matches at Eden Gardens under a cloud letters@hindustantimes.com

KOLKATA: Uncertainty prevails over the two matches scheduled at Eden Gardens this month as the state government is yet to issue the required a no objection certificate. According to Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) officials, the public works department (PWD) is not granting the no objection certificate required for hosting the India-England matches at Eden Gardens. Eden Gardens is scheduled to host a Twenty-20 match between India and England on October 29 and a ‘One-day’ match between India and England on October 25. “Without the no-objection certificate from the PWD, hosting the scheduled international level matches would be an uncertain task for us,” Biswaroop Dey, joint secretary of CAB, said at Writers’ Buildings on Wednesday. Expressing his displeasure about such behaviour on the part of the state government, Dey said that while it is a challenging job for CAB to bring international-level matches at Eden Gardens, such non-cooperation from government’s end would only make the job even further difficult.

Reversing a lower court’s March 2008 conviction order, the bench said there was no evidence on record to prove Pradeep acted at the behest of Sharma and the other two, Satya Prakash and Shri Bhagwan. It said: “Did he (Pradeep) act alone? Did he act at the behest of RK Sharma or did he act at the instance of someone else? These are questions we can’t answer on the basis of the material before us. “Judges, like other human beings, have suspicions. But judges, unlike others who are free to arrive at their own conclusions, cannot and do not convict on the basis of mere suspicion.” The court ordered the release of Sharma, in jail for the last nine years, and the other two if they were not required in any other case. It also dismissed a Delhi Police petition against the acquit-

ny berth for political representatives another reason. Unlike in the case of other universities, the state has constituted an eightmember mentor group of renowned academics to help the university bring back its glory. This is the reason why the state thought the presence of another body may complicate the functioning of the institution. The drafts for both the ordinances are ready and, once chief minister Mamata Banerjee returns, it will be announced. The ordinance will also ensure that the vice-chancellors of all state universities can be removed.

Death may come suddenly and in mysterious ways. From ancient times and even today, “death” is surrounded by fear, sorrow, loss and the ‘mystique.’ Sacred scriptures provide some explanations and try to instill meaning. It is strange and difficult to comprehend why a human being endowed with intellect and consciousness is unable to come to terms with this reality. Scriptures say far from being contemplated with horror, the thought of death should be pleasant. The main reason that

it is not because we are not on intimate terms with our true nature; not conscious of the soul being the real self. If we disregard the great spiritual laws that govern the progress of our souls, we are going to find things missing in ourselves. If we have deliberately violate laws laid down by the supreme Divinity, we have to suffer the consequences. This world is dynamic and ever-changing. Just as our bodies grow and perform various activities, so too our souls; reacting to all that we do, sensitive, receiving impressions, motivating us all the time, to grow and develop.

Death means soul gets disconnected from the both body and the physical world to continue its eternal journey. We should be intelligently aware of the fact that life is uni-directional, swift, purposeful; that we are speeding on through the days and years to a destination. Life, with all its beauty and richness and variegated experiences, is only the wombworld of the soul; death is the real life into which we are born. This is the whole concept of heaven and hell. Heaven is not a place, it is a state. The same is true of hell. They are both conditions inside every human being.

During the conversation, Marshall told the Aircel owner that he had taken “clearance from the Maran brothers for taking over Aircel and all his problems would be solved.” Sivasankaran then got a call from the former minister “instructing” him to work out the details of the sale with Maxis.

Later at a meeting in Chennai on November 12, 2005, Kalanithi told Sivasankaran to sell his company to Maxis. On the same day Sivasankaran received a call from the minister “directing” him to sell 100% equity of Aircel to Maxis and assured him of clearing the deal. Sivasankaran sold Aircel to Maxis shortly after that.

EDEN GARDENS IS SCHEDULED TO HOST A TWENTY-20 MATCH AND A ONE-DAY MATCH AGAINST ENGLAND ON OCTOBER 25 & 29

“It is not my daughter’s wedding. Holding international-level matches is a matter of pride for Bengal and the government should consider that before such non-cooperation,” Dey said. According to sources in Writers’ Buildings, state government wants CAB to include two government representatives at its technical committee. Acknowledging such demands on government’s end, CAB joint secretary, said, “For the last 40 years there were no such government representatives in CAB technical committee. But now if the government wishes such inclusions we would do so.” Dey, however, expressed his displeasure questioning, only six months back CAB got noobjection certificate from the government. “Is it that every time we would host matches in Eden Gardens we would need to knock at the government doors for cooperation?” Dey said.

Olivetti & Co.

Olivetti corporation, an Italian typewriter business machines company hired Giovanni Pintori to join the publicity department. The logotype he made for Olivetti in 1947 consisted of the name in lowercase sans-seriff letters, slightly lettespaced. Identity was acheived not through a systematic design system but through the general visual appearance of the promotional graphics. The complexity of form seen in Pintori’s work was well suited to Olivetti’s publicity needs during the 1940s and 1950s, the firm sought a high technology image to promote advanced industrial design and engineering.

The Columbian Broadcasting System(CBS) of New York City moved to the forefront of corporate identity design as a result of two vitalassets. Golden designed one of the most successful trademarks of the twentieth century for CBS. When the pictographic CBS eye appeared as an on-air logo on 16 November 1951, it was superimposed over a cloud filled sky and projected an almost surreal sense of an eye in the sky. The CBS approach to corporate image and design was not dependent on a system or style but rather on the management policy towards design and creative abilities of its design personnel.
