Summer Programme 2012 Experience the Nature Park e Alps
Reach for th
Zillertal Alps Nature Park Dear Nature Park Enthusiast, Our Nature Park is an Alpine Nature Park in the truest sense of the words. Its’ boundaries extend from the mountaineering village of Ginzling to the Hochfeiler Peak. All altitude levels found in the Central European Alps are represented in the Nature Park, which is characterized by an extraordinary level of biodiversity.Together with other protected areas in North, South and East Tyrol, the Zillertal Alps Nature Park forms the largest complex nature reserve area in the Alps! Deep canyons form spectacular natural gateways to the five subsidiary valleys of the Nature Park, commonly known in Zillertal as „Gründe“, which open up to reveal lush alpine grazing pastures. These precious cultural landscapes are inextricably intertwined with the rugged mountains, glaciers and peaks of the Zillertal Main Ridge such as the Löffler, Schwarzenstein, Möseler or Hochfeiler. The Nature Park is an environmentally protected „quiet area“ in the upper Zillertal, yet is open to all. To be more precise, the Nature Park is something we want to show you in all its’ natural beauty and uniqueness! I invite you to explore the Nature Park with one of our experienced guides and discover the alpine flora and fauna, find out more about Zillertal, its‘ folk and 2
nature. Whether on a walk to the Berliner Hut, our herb walk, a geological expedition to the Tauern Window or on a hike to the Ahorn Peak with Peter Habeler. Allow us to tell you about the area’s eventful history, times of smugglers and poachers, as you improve your knowledge and perception of the beauty of nature. But above all, enjoy the essential pleasures of rest and relaxation whilst visiting the Nature Park. I would particularly like to recommend the accommodation of some 130 businesses that have a co-operative agreement with the Nature Park and are granted the right to use the official title of „Nature Park Partner“. Our partners must fulfil certain criteria, agree to the philosophy of the Nature Park and embody the line of thinking of the Nature Park and its’ natural and cultural landscapes. In addition to free participation on Nature Park guided tours and free admission to the Nature Park House in Ginzling, guests of these establishments will be served a high proportion of regional foods and products.
The Nature Park is waiting to be discovered by you.
Yours, Matthias Danninger Nature Park & Reserve Manager with Team 3

Kings of the Mountains
Walk to the Ibex.Worlds in Zillergrund Alfred Stock | Franz Haun | Walter Ludl The alpine ibex is an animal that has a deeply rooted tradition in the Nature Park. Up until the beginning of the 17th century there was a population of several hundred animals. After violent clashes between the official hunters and local poachers, the ibex population has been eradicated. Despite many attempts in subsequent years to reintroduce ibex to the Zillertal Valley, only limited success has been enjoyed. Currently, there is a small population that lives wild in the depths of the Zemm- and Floitengrund, although seldom seen by visitors to the High Nature Park Zillertal Alps. „Dairyman’s Pancake“ at the Bodenalm Hike to one of the last original dairy farms in the Alps Maria Fankhauser
The Bodenalm, located at 1,700 m above sea level in the Zillergrund, is one of the last dairy farms in the Alps that is not accessible by road. Trail of Patricide
On the trail of a true crime story Maria Fankhauser Philipp was dead tired when he climbed down to the Dominikus Hut with his father, Morduch Halsmann, on the 10th September 1928. From here it was another one and a half hour walk to the Breitlahner – but Halsmann senior never arrived. For still unexplained reasons, he died along the way. Secrets of the Eternal Ice
The Berlin Hut Glacier Trail in Zemmgrund Walter Ludl Many alpine glaciers will disappear from high alpine landscapes in the coming decades. Their decline is a visible indication of the ongoing climate change in which we find ourselves. Climate change, however, has occurred already in the past and traces of this are discernible in the landscape. Such traces can be found in the Glacier Themed Trail near the Berliner Hut. In additional to interesting facts about glaciers and climate change, this walk to the Berliner Hut also gives an insight into the early history of mountaineering.

Exhibitions
Naturpark.Welten_Special Exhibition in Ginzling In 2011 the Nature Park celebrated a double anniversary – 20 years as a protected conservation area and 10 years as a designated Nature Park. Reason enough for the Nature Park to create a special exhibition, which can be found in the old Ginzling junior school behind the church. It tells of glaciers, rocks, alpine meadows and grazing pastures as well as about the people that live in the Nature Park region. Open daily from 8.30 to 17.00 hrs. Free admission! Kultur.Land(schafts).Welten Mitterstall Brandberg Cultural.Land(scape).Worlds - One of the mountain farming cultural monuments in the Nature Park Region is the Mitterstall (Mitter Barn). After renovation work was completed on this listed building in 2010, Mitterstall forms the centre piece of a Nature Park exhibition called, „Brandberg – our cultural landscape through the ages“. The exhibition is spread over three rooms and tells of the harsh conditions alpine farmers had to endure, with details on the characteristic landscapes of pastures, mountain meadows and includes personal stories about the local people. Open daily. Free admission!
Steinbock.Welten_Zillergrund Ibex.Worlds in Zillergrund. The alpine ibex (Capra ibex) is an animal that has a deeply rooted tradition at the Zillertal Alps Nature Park and, until recently, a very chequered history. Up until the beginning of the 17th century there was a population of several hundred animals, which was eradicated over a period of only 15 years. Despite many attempts in subsequent years to reintroduce ibex to the Zillertal Valley, only limited success has been enjoyed. A small population currently lives wild in the depths of the valleys, although seldom seen by visitors to the Zillertal Alps Nature Park. You can find out interesting information on the ibex at the Steinbock.Welten in Zillergrund, as well as enjoy the opportunity to see a few live examples up close. Open daily. Free admission! Mehlerhaus in the Tux Valley A fascinating museum has been created at this 17th Century farmhouse, which was inhabited right up until the end of the 20th Century. A permanent exhibition of old tools, farming implements and information on the magnesite mines which closed in 1976 is only part of the display. In 2012, a new exhibition called “Wild Animals in the Tux Valley” can be visited on the ground floor. Open from 6 July to 28 September every friday from 13.00 to 17.00 hrs. Free admission!
