HELICOBACTER PYLORI (HP) Helicobacter pylori (HP) is a bacterium that infects the human gastric epithelium. It is microaerophilic, and it requires oxygen but at lower concentrations than those found in the atmosphere. Its shape is spiral (hence its name Helicobacter) and can literally “screw” itself to colonize the stomach epithelium. This bacterium lives exclusively in the human stomach and can survive in very acidic environments.

CAUSES The causes of H. pylori infection are not determined. However, some experts affirm that this bacteria is transmitted from parents to children. On the other hand, this bacterial infection is more common in crowded or unsanitary conditions. And it can affect up to 75% of children in lowincome areas and developing countries.

Symptoms of an H. pylori Infection

Most of the patients infected by the H. pylori bacteria are not aware of it for years since they are asymptomatic in many cases. However, when symptoms occur, your child may experience an inflammation of the stomach lining. Therefore, this infection causes gastritis.

PAIN AFTER EATING

Also, when symptoms occur, they can include dull and persistent stomach pain. It usually appears two to three hours after eating and can come and go over several days or weeks.

DIAGNOSIS:

Blood tests that look for antibodies made by the H. pylori bacteria. Stool tests to check for abnormal bacteria in your child’s digestive system. Breath tests to check for carbon present after your child drinks a special liquid.

Upper endoscopy to examine the lining of the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum with a thin tube called an endoscope. This tube has a light and a camera at one end. The specialist will then take a tissue sample or biopsy, if necessary. And the tissue sample can be tested for signs of infection or H. pylori bacteria.
