CEREBROVASCULAR DISEASES Cerebrovascular diseases are among the ten leading causes of death in children, with the highest probability of dying for those under one year of age. They are the third leading cause of death after heart disease and cancer in the United States.

The causes of CVD have changed over time. In the past, Haemophilus influenza meningitis was a significant cause of stroke and cerebrovascular disease in children in developed countries. However, other common factors such as congenital heart disease, sickle cell anemia, bleeding disorders, chickenpox infection, and other health problems are present nowadays.

Stroke in Children

Pediatric stroke has significant mortality and morbidity so far since approximately between 10 and 25% of children who suffer from it die for this reason. On the other hand, 25% of children affected by this problem present recurrences, and up to 66% will manifest neurological deficits in the future. The first hours of a stroke are critical in the patient’s prognosis.

WHAT ARE THE COMMON SYMPTOMS OF A STROKE? Sometimes it’s hard to tell if a young child has a stroke because they can not always tell what is happening to them. However, some noticeable symptoms in babies may include the following signs Seizures that recur in one part of the body Severe sleepiness that prevents the baby from waking up to feed Weakness or stiffness on one side of the body or in an arm or leg.

In children, it may include sudden weakness on one side of the face and body (not using the affected areas as they usually do). Falling to the side repeatedly Difficulty speaking as usual Vertigo, balance problems, trouble walking, and double vision Sudden, acute, and unusual headache.

WHAT TO DO?

If you suspect a child experiences a stroke, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room. Then, a doctor will talk with you and examine your child. Among the tests and examinations that the health professional will perform are the following: Computed tomography (CT) scan or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) Cardiac tests include an EKG or ultrasound of the heart. Blood tests to look for bleeding or clotting problems, infections, or blood conditions.
