Relationships
Relationships are important to mental wellbeing, but they can become more complicated if someone has a mental health problem. When people first experience a mental health problem, they may feel ashamed or embarrassed and anticipate that other people will react badly because of the stigma associated with mental health. Someone with a mental health problem does not have to tell friends or family if they do not wish to, however making people aware of the illness means that there is less need to explain about bad days, medication, or going to appointments. Some people are scared of mental health problems and may avoid contact with someone who is unwell, many other people will offer understanding and support. Relationships may change if a friend or partner becomes more of a carer.
