growing global reach With every year that passes, the International Spirits Challenge brings a wider range of entries and a higher level of honour for the winners. And never has the event been so hotly contested. Well in excess of 1,000 entries faced the judges across the 11 spirits categories, while both the Design & Packaging and Marketing classes highlighted some of the most innovative and unusual approaches drinks brands take to raising their profile. Quality is never in question at the ISC but this year’s entries raised the bar yet again. The judges awarded a total of 34 trophies – 10 more than last year – as more brands pushed the boundaries and made the grade with the expert panels. Vodka was again the standout category when it came to trophies awarded, netting 12 in all and beating last year’s total of eight. But, while the traditional world spirits continue to dominate, the presence of styles that are traditionally more regionalised – such as aquavit, soju and schochu – continue to break through. This demonstrates the globalisation of consumer tastes as world travel becomes more commonplace and the desire for unusual and exotic flavours opens up new markets. Every year the ISC brings with it a spirit of adventure that is rewarded with discovery – improved production methods, a previously unknown name, entrants’ thirst for ever higher levels of excellence. The task of judging is never going to get easier, but the rewards will never diminish either. Contenders and judges alike remain up to the challenge.

SUPREME CHAMPION SPIRIT
Crème de Cassis de Dijon Gabriel Boudier This classic liqueur won over the judges once more to take the title of Supreme Champion for the second year running. It was up against 33 other trophy winners so it is testament to the consistency of the quality that judges marked Gabriel Boudier’s much-loved cassis product top of the class. They described the liquid as “extremely good” and “complex” with an “intense fruit palate” and “good acidity”. Having been around since 1874, Boudier’s Crème de Cassis de Dijon is an established favourite with bartenders for a variety of cocktails and, given that the label has remained the same since its inception, nobody could accuse the product of not looking familiar. The company prides itself on sticking to strict methods of production. Crème de Cassis de Dijon has to be made from the extract obtained by “macerating blackcurrant berries

in alcohol without preservatives or colouring, with a limited addition of sugar dissolved directly into the alcoholic juice of the blackcurrant berries at cold temperature.” The attention to detail that is applied to its products also lies at the heart of the company’s philosophy. In 1977, Maison Boudier claimed to be the first company in its sector to obtain ISO 9002 certification for the manufacture, packaging, marketing and distribution of Crème de Cassis de Dijon, along with spirit drinks and herbal liqueurs by the BVQI (Bureau Veritas Quality International). It has attained the certification every year since, saying: “This distinction requires regular daily checks and a total commitment for perfection to be renewed annually.” More proof, if it were needed of the company’s commitment to quality.
DISTILLER OF THE YEAR
Suntory
Is there no stopping the juggernaut that Japan’s Suntory has become? This is the third year in a row that the company has taken the Distiller of the Year title at the ISC and its medals pedigree keeps getting longer. Last year the distiller racked up eight golds and a trophy, beating the previous year’s six golds. For 2014 it has continued to impress the Whiskies judges, claiming a total of 22 medals in that category – nine of them gold, one of them a trophy. It also made its mark on the Vodka category this year with a gold medal and trophy for its Ao brand. The Suntory name has been up in lights since this May, following its acquisition of US firm Beam, which makes Jim Beam whiskey, in a £9.5bn buyout which created the world’s third-largest premium spirits producer. That’s not bad going for a company that started life as a single whisky distillery on the outskirts of Kyoto, in Yamazaki, in 1923. The distillery introduced Suntory Shirofuda

(‘white label’) in 1929 – said to be the first genuine Japanese whisky to be produced domestically. After making adjustments to “suit the discriminating market of Japan”, Suntory released its premium whisky Kakubin (‘square bottle’). A second distillery was built in 1973 in Hakushu at the foot of Mount Kaikomagatake
in Japan’s southern Alps and Suntory concentrated on refining its techniques “to develop a variety of first-rate unblended whiskies and bring to market such products as the single malt whiskies Yamazaki and Hakushu, as well as Hibiki blended whisky”. Clearly, the focus on technique has paid off as the brands are gaining top accolades in competitions worldwide.

INDIVIDUAL DISTILLERY OF THE YEAR
Château du Tariquet
Maison Tariquet in the heart of the Armagnac region
With a medals haul totalling seven at the 2014 International Spirits Challenge, Gascony’s Château du Tariquet bags the Individual Distillery of the Year award. Among the big hitters this year were the Château’s gold and trophy-winning Blanche Armagnac and gold standard Bas-Armagnac VSOP and Bas-Armagnac XO. Three silvers complete the impressive line-up for Château du Tariquet Folle Blanche 15 Year Old and 12 Year Old and the Château du Tariquet Légendaire. Lying between the Atlantic ocean and the Pyrenees in the south of France, the house has an impressive history, having first produced the Armagnac spirit in 1683. The estate was bought in 1912 by Pierre Artaud, grandfather of Hélène Grassa who, with her husband Pierre, remains on the estate where their grandsons, Armin and Rémy, are winemakers today. The Grassas with Artaud set up a company in 1972 to sell the Bas-Armagnacs produced at the property and 10 years later they branched
out into white wine production. Today the company produces seven dry white wines, two sweet and two rosés alongside its BasArmagnacs. The grapes – including Ugni Blanc, Folle Blanche, Colombard and Chardonnay – are grown on 950ha of vineyards using sustainable methods. The terroir of this ancient estate is described as: “Clay-limestone soils and boulbène’ topsoil enhanced by ochrecoloured sand known as ‘sables fauves’.” These characteristics are said to impart gentle acidity, freshness and intense expression of fruit. Three generations of the Grassa family have contributed to the continuing success of Château du Tariquet and its products are sought after worldwide, with outlets including top hotels and duty free. Château du Tariquet is also the first class choice for 26 airline companies. The quality of the Bas-Armagnacs was certainly in no doubt by the ISC judges.
OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTION
Joy Spence
The world’s first female rum master blender, Joy Spence has had a remarkable career, a highlight being the 2012 launch of another world first – a 50-year-old rum. Spence cites the release of Appleton Estate’s Jamaica Independence Reserve as a career highlight – along with having been awarded the Order of Distinction by the Jamaican government in 2005 for her services to industry. Further accolades abound. In September 2012 she received an honorary Doctorate of Science degree from the University of Loughborough in recognition of her contribution to the distilled spirits industry and the advancement of women in the field. In November 2012 Spence also received an honorary Doctorate of Laws degree from the University of the West Indies. Spence started her career as a science teacher in 1972 before joining J Wray & Nephew as chief chemist in 1981. Working with the then master blender,

Owen Tulloch, sparked a passion for the art of creating rum and, under his guidance, Spence extended her knowledge of the science of rum-making to include the artistic side as well. She made history on being appointed master blender in 1997. Since then she has created many rums, spirits and liqueurs for the company, including Appleton Estate Reserve Jamaica Rum and Appleton Estate Extra 12 Year Old. When she’s not making rum Spence is something of a philanthropist, committed to promoting the sciences in schools and frequently giving motivational speeches at high schools, colleges and universities across Jamaica. An architect of change for the rum industry, Spence is innovative, artistic and effervescent – a tireless worker with boundless ideas and energy. She is a fine ambassador both for the Appleton brand and for rum as a whole and thoroughly deserving of this accolade.

This campaign invited the brand’s global community of advocates – the Guardians of the Glenlivet – to make history by choosing the next limited edition. Master distiller Alan Winchester made three new malts to be tasted and voted on at an online campaign hub. As not all guardians were able to taste the whiskies the Glenlivet created an integrated campaign that ‘brought the expressions to life’, encouraging guardians to cast an informed vote.

Ardbeg Day and the launch of ‘Ardbog’ THE GLENMORANGIE COMPANY
The Campaign: Every year the Islay distillery holds a global Ardbeg Day, and this year launched its limited-edition Ardbog on the same day, renaming the annual party after the product. To draw attention to the peat bogs of Islay parties were held around the world with participants attending events themed around archeology and peat. These included digging for treasure on San Francisco’s beaches, taking over downtown Tapei with digging-themed games, and an archeologythemed treasure hunt across Paris.

There were four experiential stages to the King’s 172nd Birthday Campaign, aimed at raising awareness of the brand among national consumer press with an emphasis on food. The Kraken Rum teamed up with Miss Cakehead to create a pop-up rum bar and ‘edible autopsy’ in view of military sea forts in north Kent. A Kraken Rum research team, the Black Ink Society, recovered the remains of a Kraken and brought parts onboard, including a giant eye (white chocolate filled with Kraken rum), Kraken cysts (black pickled onions) and a Kraken mouth (Kraken rum cake).
