THE GUILD OF MASTER JOINERS

MArch Year 1 final project is based in Coleford that analyses its place and people is order to recreate ‘Forest Guild’. The Forest of Dean influences the main proposal design and programme. The furniture making workshops aim to provide a place in Coleford to learn craftsmanship and develop the skills to become a Master Joiner while reviving the traditional Apprentice - Journeyman – Master transition of Medieval Europe. The main focus is on wood as it is the main source of the Forest of Dean. The Guild of Master Joiners with apprenticeship college workshops focus on traditional wood joinery, advanced japanese joinery, furniture assembling and furniture design in order to produce high end furniture by using a locally found hardwood.

OLD MARKET

SELF-SUFFICIENT CITY WITHIN THE CITY

MArch Year 2 ‘URBAN UNIT’ Group project is based in Old Market, Bristol that aims to redevelop the area by using principles of healthy architecture, health and well-being. As a result the masterplan of the Old Market is mainly focused on people health in accordance with well-being, namely; physical, mental, social and ecological. New masterplan and vision for the area were provided by analysing the place and understanding the community needs. The implementation of the inner ring road, slum clearances and the creation of the Broadmead Shopping area have left an ancient market and its surrounding neighbourhoods effectively cut off from the city. Much of its long established community was re-housed in other parts of Bristol. The area became somewhat forgotten and suffered from years of low investment. Local residents eventually found themselves lacking even basic amenities such as shops selling fresh food. In many senses it had become merely a shadow of its former self. The need for community based social care is almost three times higher in Lawrence Hill compared to the rest of Bristol.

In Lawrence Hill, students have lower achievement scores compared to the Bristol average ranking in the lowest five wards in Bristol.

Over the last decade, 28% of the total increase in population in Bristol took place in Central and Lawrence Hill wards alone. The majority of homes are classified as social housing, with overcrowding being a serious issue.

REDEVELOPMENT OF OLD MARKET

GR

It’s only in the past hundred years or so that we shifted from spending 90% of our time outdoors to spending 90% of our time indoors...There is now evidence that connects nature with improved health, well-being and productivity as well as enhanced learning, empathy and compassion. [Buchanan, 2016]

By improving pedestrian and cycle routes whilst increasing the quality and quantity of green spaces in and around Old Market, the aim is to allow more people to flow through the area. With increased accessibility, Old Market will encourage physical activity, a key element of a healthy, active lifestyle. TRANSPORTATION

MAGGIE’S

CANCER WELLBEING CENTRE

MArch Year 2 ‘URBAN UNIT’ Individual project is based in Old Market, Bristol, integrated into the healthy city masterplan agenda. The percentage of cancer diseases along with premature deaths in people under 75 is almost double in Old Market to that of the rest of Bristol. There is no support within South West of England such as Maggie’s Centres’ that would look after their physical and mental health and would provide a support away from hospital environment. Every year, over 300,000 people are diagnosed with cancer in the UK, facing tough questions, exhausting treatment and difficult emotions. Cancer Wellbeing Centre is there for everyone affected by cancer, offering a programme of support to strengthen their social, physical and emotional wellbeing. The building represents a journey through ‘5 stages of dealing with Cancer’ (also known as 5 stages of grief) in order to help people to find their way out to ‘acceptance’. Different facilities and atmospheric spaces within the building are arranged in a specific way in order to honor each stage rather than eliminate it. Moreover, it offers a lot of physical activity with the access to the courtyards, park with an amphitheater in front of the building and series of stairs incorporated to even out the level change thorough the site that helps to improve people fitness, health and wellbeing. Visual connection with intimate courtyard gardens creates a relaxing environment with the emphasis on stress reduction and healing.

Adding surrounding walls around the building to create a sense of safety. The main front wall is divided in half and overlapping in order to create a hidden entrance that is leading into the building without having a 'front door' from the street.

INVITING INSIDE

COURTYARDS

The building has a focus on green spaces connecting to each other inside of the safe and healthy environment. There are many rest places in the courtyards and on the roof terraces to have a cup of tea or a conversation and enjoy the nature in the meantime

ALL the empty spaces inside the surrounding walls are formed into green spaces that would be seen and accessible from all the stages within the building.

COMMUNITY CENTRE

PROPOSAL FOR OLD MARKET

1 WEEK COMPETITION - PROPOSAL Bristol has a relatively young age profile with more children over old people. There are 3 schools in the Lawrence Hill, however students have lower achievement scores compared to the Bristol average- its ranking being in the lowest five wards in Bristol. Apart from Trinity Art Centre there are no other creative after school activities for kids that could help them to concentrate, achieve better results at school. Community Centre provides variety of spaces such as dance studios, arts and crafts workshops, music rooms, theatre for acting and events, a multi-purpose hall and a youth space for meetings, relaxing, reading, or doing homework after school. The building is designed in a way that exposes the activities, such as dance studios and art workshops in order to attract people to participate. The building is divided into three blocks, the theatre, multi-purpose hall and classes for creative activities. The urban stairs create an amphitheater space for small outdoor performances.

01

RURAL TOURISM GUEST HOUSE

During the placement in Lithuania, I had an opportunity to be a part of bigger scale projects such as a rural tourism building, where I presented my ‘AutoCad’, ‘Revit’ and visualization making skills. I helped to finalize the plans, build a 3D model using ‘Revit’ and also provide atmospheric renders of proposal within rural landscape.

02

RESIDENTIAL

3 BEDROOM HOUSE - COMPETITION

My 3 bedroom residential house proposal won the competition at the practice and its concept has been developed further. The plan was produced using ‘Autocad’ whereas concept models were made using ‘Revit’.

03

LOGISTICS COMPLEX

During my placement I worked on a number of industrial projects including big scale building complex such as Logistics Centre with administration, storage and factories in Klaipeda, Lithuania. I was developing concept models and working on the circulation through 3 sites, including the networks of rainwater, sewage, electricity, gas, tap water, telephone cables and street lighting.

INTERIOR DESIGN 1 BEDROOM FLAT

The project involved creating interior design for 1 bedroom accommodation in a new residential block overlooking the river in the City Centre of Vilnius, Lithuania. I had an opportunity to develop this minimalistic and warm design following the principles of Scandinavian style and ‘hygge’. I was working along with the client while choosing the materials, as well as the furniture and lighting while providing series of collages of the interior spaces and different material pallets.

MEASURED DRAWING THE HOLBURNE MUSEUM, BATH

The ‘Measured Drawing’ has long been a device used by architects to better understand the architecture of the past and also to show off their drafting skills. During the visit in Bath during undergraduate course we were asked to measure ‘The Holburne Museum’ in order to produce the measured drawing of three interesting projections of the building. No rulers were used.

02

ENTERPRISE LABORATORY FROME

Hand drawn undergraduate proposal for Enterpise Laboratory consists of two different use spaces. One of them is an Enterprise Laboratory that provides 69 workspaces for small Fashion Design Companies and promotes co-working, interaction and collaboration between companies and employees. Another use of this building is a Restaurant and an Art Gallery that has a separate entrance to avoid unwanted visitors in the office area.

03

SKETCHING

FIELDTRIP - LISBON, PORTUGAL

Sketching while traveling helps to observe and understand the place better. It is also a great way to express and develop ideas of the building. These quick sketches were made during a field trip in Lisbon, Portugal.
