AUGUST 2012
Silage chopping begins for some producers by Gordon Wolf July was the fifth driest and third hottest July in 140 years of weather records in Iowa. The drought, primarily, and early planting, to a lesser extent, has meant cutting silage a month earlier than normal for some producers. Near Denison in Crawford County, the Collins family started cutting silage on July 30. Normally it is done in September. Paul Kassel, Iowa State University Extension crops field specialist, said some silage cutting has taken place in his service area and more will take place in the near future. “There are enough dry areas here and there that people are moving that way,” he stated. “It depends on how much rain we get the next week or two.”
Rain would delay silage cutting. But he expects silage cutting to be in full swing in the next couple weeks. Kassel serves Dickinson, Clay, Buena Vista, Sac, Pocahontas, Palo Alto, Emmet, Kossuth, Hancock and Winnebago counties. The drought is the main factor that has pushed farmers to cut silage earlier than normal, but early planting has had an impact. Kassel pointed out that corn planted in March basically led to a half month earlier development. He said the condition of the corn in the counties he serves varies greatly. “Some is almost normal; it received better rain and is in good soil,” Kassel stated, adding that some corn plants – those in areas that are short on moisture,
have ears that are half the normal size. Around Spencer, the corn is better, but to the south near Peterson and Linn Grove, where it has been drier, corn plants have smaller ears and ears that didn’t fill out. Mark Licht, Iowa State University Extension field agronomist who serves counties in central Iowa, said farmers in his area have been cutting silage already but he has not yet seen any corn harvested for grain. “I’ve been hearing people say the corn is drying down fairly quickly,” he commented. Some corn was planted two to three weeks earlier than normal, allowing the crop to mature earlier. But the dry weather is what has driven the early silage cutting. DRY DOWN...7A

July silage chopping At right, Dakotah Collins (left) of Denison leaves one tractor ready to haul a load of silage to cross over to the tractor on the right and wait his turn to load. In the center, a third tractor moves simultaneously with the self-propelled forage harvester to collect the silage in another waiting wagon. The wagons all headed for a predetermined spot about three miles away to unload into a storage bunker formed by two rows of hay bales. Below, tractors compact silage by rolling back and forth. The Collins family began chopping silage on July 30. Normally chopping wouldn’t begin until September. The cover photo was also from this farm. Photos by Bruce A. Binning

Revitalizing small town Iowa’s Main Street John Deere enthusiast sets out to restore vintage Case dealership
by Greg Forbes Visitors during Kiron’s Heritage Days will notice a vintage facelift on Main Street. Jim Lundell, with help from his family and friends, has started to transform a deteriorating building back to the Case tractor dealership it used to be. Anyone that is acquainted with Lundell knows his dedication to Case is slightly unusual. Back at his home near Kiron, Lundell has shops, sheds and garages devoted to John Deere tractors, lawnmowers, generators, various machines and memorabilia. He has traveled the United States since 1973 to seek out vintage yellow and green items that bear the John Deere logo. Neon signs particularly catch his attention. However, Lundell’s attention divided to Case when his daughter, Angie, married Kurt Kastner. “I didn’t have much to do with Case until Angie married Kurt,” Lundell said of the Case enthusiast. “But I have to admit, Case is a pretty tractor.” Kastner purchased the old dealership from David Gray as part of a two-building deal last August. He was particularly interested in the neighboring shed to store seeds for his seed company but knew the old building had potential. “I had wanted this building before I knew his (Lundell’s) daughter,” Kastner explained. “I talked to Jim when it became available and we both decided we couldn’t let it pass. We knew we could change it back.” The original Case dealership, Kollbaum Brothers Case, opened in the 1940s and experienced great success into the mid-70s. Kastner believed that the dealership kept Kiron alive through the mid-1900s. “Even though Kiron was small, they were one of the biggest dealerships in the state,” Kastner said. “This dealership put Kiron on the map for a long time.” He continued that since restoration of the building began in the spring, several Kiron residents have noticed the new orange paint on the front of the building. Many people that inquire about the current state of the dealership are pleased to hear of its new purpose. “A lot of people drive up and show interest in what we’re doing and they’re glad these old buildings are being kept up,” Kastner said. “People like to take pride in a small community.” Lundell said he was excited to complete the project because small town dealerships are a dying breed today. In 1948, shortly after Kollbaum opened, Lundell’s father arrived home with a miniature toy tractor purchased from the business. That small tractor sparked Lundell’s interest and connection to vintage vehicles and farm equipment. “I can remember when I was little, all the small towns had a John Deere dealership, a Case dealership and others,” he explained.

Top left: Kurt Kastner, sonin-law of vintage tractor collector Jim Lundell, adds a coat of orange paint to the interior of an old Case supplies dealership in Kiron. Kastner purchased the building last August and he and Lundell, along with help from the family, have worked tirelessly to return it to its glory days. Top right: The building, which opened as Kollbaum Brothers Case in the 1940s, sits on Main Street in Kiron. Left: Kurt Kastner, left, and Jim Lundell, right, chat next to an old Case tractor that will be on display. Photos by Greg Forbes “I collect to reminisce about those days.” Lundell, Kasnter and their families and friends have spent countless hours working to turn time back in the old building. The first order of business was to lay concrete in the back room and replace rotting walls in the middle showroom. Walls are splashed with white and vintage Case colors of orange and off yellow. The front room will resemble the show room of the 1940s. In one window, passers by can view a classic, restored tractor. Kollbaum-era lawn and garden supplies will sit in the other. Lundell plans for the middle room of the building to look like an old International Harvester dealership. He shared fond memories of going to an old IH business and looking at the colorful packages on shelves behind the counter. In order to replicate the retail counter, he has purchased a 10foot section of a vintage International Harvester dealership counter from a small town in Nebraska. Old shelves from vintage dealerships are ready to repaint and stand behind the counter. Despite the immense amount of work completed and left on the to-do list, Lundell and his family hope to have the

displays open for Kiron Heritage Days August 17 and 18. Lundell’s commitment to preserving the past extends beyond the Case dealership. Three barns, a garage and a shed sit on the property at his country home, all full of vintage John Deere, Case, International Harvester and various other memorabilia. A large shed, purchased from Menards, is covered in old and new John Deere posters and on the floor sit four 1960s Chevrolets. Classic neon signs from gas stations, soda companies and more line the walls of a room refinished to look like a vintage ice cream shop. In a barn down the dirt road near his house, dozens of John Deere lawn tractors sit bumper to bumper, and in the attic, giant lighted signs from John Deere and Case dealerships sit staring at the door. Lundell has chased these items all over the nation and while he sells some of his findings, money is not the focus of his hobby. “It’s a lot of fun and I meet a lot of interesting people,” Lundell said of his time in the “picking” industry and continued that collecting has become a family interest as well. “With all the help I’ve gotten with the Case dealership, I’ve really gotten to see that the whole family is interested.”

AUGUST 2012
Beef producers take steps to ward off heat stress Officials report fewer cattle deaths this summer by Greg Forbes Last year, August heat surprised cattle producers as more than 4,000 livestock deaths were reported throughout Iowa. While the summer this year has been, on average, harsher than 2011, cattle and farmers are better acclimated to the heat. Dal Grooms, communications director for Iowa Cattlemen’s Association, said farmers fell in to problems last year because the early summer was mild before temperatures hit triple digits in July and August. While tem-

peratures have been equally as hot this summer, they have been much drier. Dustin Vande Hoef, communications director for the Iowa Department of Agriculture, said farmers were possibly tricked by wet conditions last year. Therefore, cattle were not adjusted to the hot temperatures nor were producers prepared to fight the extreme heat. Vande Hoef said cattle farmers learned from last year and have proceeded to water pastures to give livestock a cool place to lie. Some keep misters on cattle or frequently spray the animals to keep them cool. “Cattle don’t sweat to cool down like humans do. So one way producers try to keep cattle cool is by providing clean and fresh water,” Vande Hoef stated.

This year, Grooms explained that producers have been watering cattle regularly and often and have increased their exposure to shade. Chris Clark, a beef specialist with Iowa State University Extension, said the feed schedule for cattle is also important to reduce the effects of heat. “Farmers should feed cattle 70 percent of their daily ration in the evening or at night,” he explained. When an animal is fed at night, the fermentation process of digestion can occur when the temperature is at its coolest. “It just adds to the heat they are soaking up from the sun and the temperature,” Clark said. “At least at night they don’t have the sun constantly beating down on them.” The preparation by producers and the acclimation of cattle to the heat have led to a drastic decrease in heatrelated deaths. Grooms said so far this year the largest reported loss of cattle from one lot was 40. Last year, a couple of lots in northeast Iowa reported losing as many as 200. She further explained that conditions got severe enough last year for some farmers to ask for emergency crews to spray cattle down with fire hoses. Clark said one thing farmers have to be aware of with the heat is the nitrate level in corn. He explained that drought stressed corn tends to be high in nitrate, which is toxic to cattle. In order to prevent nitrate poisoning, cattle producers should send samples of their feed to the Iowa State Diagnostic lab or other local labs. Most importantly, aside from improved health, the extreme heat has not greatly impacted beef prices as of yet. Clark explained that many producers have already turned their cattle to market and have pulled some off of pastures. The result has been a slight drop in prices.

2012 drought similar to 1988
DRY DOWN, from 1A “For the most part corn matures by growing degree units,” Licht explained. “High evening or night-time temperatures, when the plant doesn’t have the ability to recover from day-time temperatures, is what speeds the maturity along more so than anything.” The condition of the corn crop is varying greatly. “Many factors influence what the yield ends up being,” said Licht. “It may be simply the genetics used. When it was planted this year may make a difference.” He commented that when he was in Ames on August 7, some of the plants in the field he toured looked extremely good. That corn was planted on May 14. He has heard that corn in his area of service is anywhere from the late dough stage to the early dent stage. “One gentleman told me his corn is at half to three quarters of the milk line already. That tells us he is looking at mature corn in about seven to 10 days,” Licht stated. Licht continued that because the corn is developing quickly, it is under stress and the stalk quality is probably not as good as it has been in past years. “If we get any wind, we may see much more lodging of corn. Producers do need to pay attention to that,” Licht stated. “Some farmers talk about letting the corn dry down in the field, but this year that will be risky probably because of the poor stalk health. Farmers could lose more yield with any wind.” Kassel said the condition of soybeans in the area he serves also varies. “A lot of them look good. Some in drier areas don’t look as good,” Kassel stated. He said the area has a few spider mite problems and he encouraged farmers to check the fields during the next two weeks and to protect their beans with insecticide if there is spider mite problem, if they think its worth it. Kassel also said it is too early to tell if aflatoxin will be a problem with the corn harvest. He encouraged producers to walk their corn fields the next few weeks to inspect for blue-green mold. “That’s a concern, but not a guarantee that there is aflatoxin. Farmers should check their fields before the harvest to see if it is a problem,” he stated.
State Climatologist Harry Hillaker with the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship (IDALS), said the drought of 2012 is the most similar, as far as recent years, to the drought in 1988. “July 2012 was much hotter and dryer than July 1988,” he stated. “The 1988 growing season was not quite as hot, but the rainfall was quite a bit lower; it was much dryer in April, May and June in 1988.” According to the statewide crop progress report issued by IDALS on Monday, August 6, the condition of the corn crop statewide was slightly better than the same time in 1988 and the condition of the soybean crop was slightly worse compared to the same time in 1988. “Overall, the report was quite close for topsoil and subsoil moisture,” said Hillaker. “Both were slightly worse in 1988 than in 2012, but just barely.” He continued for July to be the worst month so far this summer created the worst scenario, primarily for the corn crop and secondarily for soybeans. For other similar drought years, Hillaker said 1955 would
be in the same ballpark, and prior to that one would have to go back to the weather reports of 1936. Still, the condition of crops varies greatly from one area to another, even from one field to the next. Hillaker said (on August 8) that he was in Ames the previous week and some fields looked really good. Corn plants had no yellowing. “It was the case where the area had a couple good rains that missed everyone else,” he stated. “That can make quite a bit of difference.” Just south of Ames, though, crops were in tough shape. The August 6 crops and weather report listed the following conditions: Both corn and soybean conditions declined slightly for the week. The week’s activities included spraying crops and chopping corn. Topsoil moisture levels improved slightly to 66 very short, 27 percent short, 7 percent adequate and 0 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture levels rated at 71 percent very short, 25 percent short, 4 percent adequate and 0 percent surplus.
July 2012 fifth driest, third hottest The statewide average rainfall total for July in Iowa was 1.16 inches, the fifth lowest July rainfall average in 140 years of weather records, said State Climatologist Harry Hillaker with the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship. Normal July rainfall is 4.5 inches. The top four driest Julys on record are: July 1886, 0.50 inch statewide average; July 1886 was also part of the driest summer on record July 1936, 0.52 inch; July 1936 was also the hottest July on record and part of the hottest summer on record July 1894, 0.72 inch; July 1894 was part of the driest growing season on record July 1975, 0.95 inch; Hillaker said many people re-
member 1976 as being dry, but for July 1975, it was the case of one dry month sandwiched between a relatively wet June and August July 2012 was the third hottest on record with an average statewide temperature of 79.7 degrees. Statewide, Iowa had 21 days when the highs reached 90 degrees or hotter. Hillaker said the average for days of 90 degrees or hotter for the entire year is 23. Several areas of Iowa had high temperatures of 90 degrees or hotter for 28 of July’s 31 days – Atlantic, Creston, Mount Ayr, Osceola and Shenandoah. In Des Moines, Keosauqua and Osceola, the high temperature was 100 degrees or hotter on 10 days in July.

From the U.S. to China, soybeans forge a relationship Demand is great, bigger supply needed by Gordon Wolf Representatives from three U.S. soybean organizations – the United Soybean Board (USB), the American Soybean Association (ASA) and the U.S. Soybean Export Council (USSEC) - reported about the success of a 30year partnership with China and the need for a larger soybean supply to meet the country’s demand during a teleconference with reporters on July 31. The importance of the partnership to U.S. soybean producers is that one of every four rows of soybeans grown in the United States will travel to China, making it the largest international market for U.S. soy. Last year China imported 895 million bushels of whole U.S. soybeans – more than half of all U.S. soybeans exported. According to a release, the Chinese delegation highlighted the promising future for the relationship with U.S. soybean producers earlier this year by committing to purchase more than $6 billion worth of U.S. soybeans during signing ceremonies in Des Moines and Los Angeles. Altogether, these commitments total more than 13.4 million metric tons, or 492.3 million bushels of U.S. soy, and set a new record for U.S. soybean purchase commitments made in one signing trip. Roy Bardole, USSEC chairman who farms with two sons near Rippey (Greene County), said he was impressed with the quality of international staff that works on the market relationship with China. “Marketing internationally is no different than marketing around home. All farmers buy machinery, crop inputs and so on, and you may note we don’t always buy where it is absolutely the cheapest, but we definitely buy from people we trust,” Bardole stated. He explained that building trust in the market has made the relationship of the American farmer and customers in China work. “We’ve heard very often in this visit that the Chinese are concerned about the security of the feed supply, the safety of feed supply and the future of feed supply,” Bardole continued. “We believe American farmers address all three concerns and help Chinese farmers feel more secure about a safe food supply.”

Bardole said the drought in the United States is a concern in China. “As we’ve met with folks with the government as well as the Chinese media and customers, the drought is absolutely the very top thing on their minds,” he stated. Questions that have been asked are “What is the drought going to do to the U.S. supply?” and “Is China going to be able to buy U.S. soybeans?” Bardole said the response is that yes, the Midwest is in a very serious drought but that the United States is a very large country and soybeans are grown across a very wide range. In response to the questions he has stated that the U.S. will have soybeans to sell to China. “Our beans are made with August rains,” Bardole stated. “I can assure that everyone here (in China) is praying for August rains for our crop.” Vanessa Kummer, USB chair and a soybean farmer from Colfax, North Dakota, explained the relationship with China began in 1982 when U.S. soybean farmers started to invest in the export market. China transitioned from being a net exporter of soybeans to a net importer. ASA President Steve Wellman, a soybean farmer from Syracuse, Nebraska, said the amount of U.S. soybeans imported by China represents the largest trading relationship with any market by a wide margin. He stated the ASA’s decision to open a marketing development office in 1982 was a vision for a long-lasting partnership. At the same time, investments were made to modernize soybean processing in China. Bardole was last in China in 2005. He said one impression that caught him by surprise in talking to Chinese government officials is that they are feeling pressure from consumer groups on the safety of biotech. “We see that in Europe and hear some of it in the Unit-
PLANTERS

ed States now, but somehow I did not really expect to hear government officials talk about consumer safety in biotech.” He does not anticipate any changes in government policy, however. “I think the Chinese government will try to get approval of events as quickly as possible. Their government understands that of all the beans in the world, only five to 10 percent that are not GMO, and that (five to 10 percent) does not serve as a drop in the bucket for China’s needs,” Bardole commented. “Their government said in the past that it will provide meat for the population, and the only way to do that is through soybean meal, and only way to meet demand is through biotech supplies.” Bardole said the biggest obstacle to the soybean export business in China is supply. “The demand the Chinese are projecting and that our government is projecting for China is absolutely enormous,” he stated. “We believe the greatest challenge, even in a good year, is to have an adequate supply so the Chinese can buy their protein needs at a reasonable price.” Rye Seed - Northern & Elbon. Branstad expresses allegiance with ethanol producer by Greg Forbes Governor Terry Branstad and Lt. Governor Kim Reynolds visited Denison Tuesday morning to welcome The Andersons, Inc. to Iowa. “We’re here to say thank you for the investment you made and the jobs you have given Iowa so far,” Branstad said. He continued that the future of the Iowa workforce will rely on engineering and manufacturing jobs in the renewable energy and agricultural fields. “Our focus is jobs and agriculture is obviously a very important part of Iowa’s economy,” Branstad explained. While the floods of 2011 and the current drought have potentially dealt long-term problems to Iowa’s economy, Branstad said The Andersons, Inc. will provide some stability to the state. “We’ve just got to deal
with all the circumstances,” he said. “But mainly, we know that most of the growth is going to come from existing businesses and we are very pleased you bought this plant.” The ethanol plant in Denison is one of four owned by The Andersons, Inc. in the United States. President Neil McKinstray said The Andersons, Inc. was drawn to Denison because of Iowa’s status as a corn growing power and thanked Branstad for his support of The Andersons as well as the ethanol industry. He continued that, despite the current condition of the weather, The Andersons, Inc. looks forward to becoming a part of the Denison community. “We’re not going to save the state all by ourselves but we will have an impact on the local economy and we’re thrilled about it,” McKinstray explained.
Branstad said his main involvement in ethanol promotion is to “clear the air” of misinformation surrounding the industry and to explain the economic impact of ethanol in Iowa. “A lot of the folks don’t know that most of the corn we raise is not sweet corn,” Branstad said with a chuckle. “A lot of the corn we raise is purchased for ethanol but the impact on food supply is very minimal.” He added that he is very disappointed that livestock producers and grocery stores have also started to believe some of the misinformation released by opponents of the ethanol industry. McKinstray agreed with Branstad and added that, as vice-president of the Renewable Fuels Association, his job is to fight the misinformation affecting the ethanol industry. “Like you said, there is

ethanol industry in the United States as well as Iowa still sits in potentially decent shape. and added that Iowa now serves as a model for corn and ethanol production even in the face of adversity. “We are facing what I believe are short-term

August 21 webinar looks at grain quality, marketing options during drought Iowa crop and livestock producers are invited to attend an Iowa State University Extension and Outreach webinar Tuesday, August 21, to learn about grain quality issues and marketing options related to drought. County extension offices will be hosting the webinar, which begins at 1 p.m. There is no charge to attend the webinar. “As we near harvest, the attention has shifted to grain quality issues,” said John Lawrence, extension program director for Agriculture and Natural Resources. “ISU Extension and Outreach specialists will talk about the quality issues farmers can expect, including potential prevalence and
severity of aflatoxin.” Extension specialists will discuss marketing options for poor quality grain and how crop insurance will address reduced value. They’ll also examine potential feeding challenges of off-quality grain that livestock producers may face. In addition, ISU Extension and Outreach specialists will look to the future and provide the outlook for crop and livestock prices. They will discuss planning for the 2013 crop, including the impact of drought on fall fertility decisions for the 2013 crop, Lawrence said. Combine adjustments and harvest safe-
ty considerations during drought also will be covered. The webinar is scheduled from 1 to 3 p.m., with formal presentations followed by a question and answer session. Concerned Inc. grows self-sufficiency with aquaponics farm by Greg Forbes Concerned Inc., of Harlan, provides jobs and real-world social skills and work development to men and women with disabilities. Clients 18 years of age and up assemble products for a wide variety of companies. Recently, though, Concerned has involved its clients in a more self-sufficient project. Nearly three years ago, Concerned, Inc. Executive Director Keith Wilkins and Dan Fowler, procurement coordinator, began to discuss ways to not only supply clients with work but to bring money back into Concerned. Farming was the idea that stuck out the most to Wilkins and Fowler. Wilkins began to experiment with hydroponics within his personal office. After further research, he and other Concerned staff realized hydroponics required a chemical balance that is too specific. One miss-measurement and an entire crop could be lost. Wilkins and Fowler, along with help from Patti Burroughs, a Concerned employee since 2008, began to look into the science of aquaponics. Aquaponics is a style of scientific farming in which plants take the wastewater from fish and use the chemicals in the fishes’ waste as food. With the operation at Concerned, the plants filter the water and the clean water flows back into the fish tanks. So, Wilkins set up a small fish tank with goldfish connected to a part of a plastic tub filled with pea gravel and a few seeds. A fluorescent light simulated the sun. The results of the experiment astounded Wilkins, Fowler and Burroughs. Fowler did, however, admit that the initial experiment had some hiccups, mainly with the light settings. The farm, fondly named Pisces Garden, has now grown from one lone tank in Wilkins’ office to a room filled with multiple grow tables and large tubs filled with Concerned’s fish of choice, tilapia. Burroughs explained that Concerned has used many different species of fish throughout the development of the farm but tilapias have proven to be heartier and easier to manage. And, when the tilapia get too big, Concerned harvests them and hosts a fish fry. “We have had fish fries twice in the past year,” Burroughs explained. “People enjoyed it so much the first time they begged for it a second time.” FARM . . . Corn checkoff referendum results certified by IDALS One cent per bushel rate to go into effect September 1 The Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship on Wednesday certified the results from a referendum conducted July 10 to increase the corn checkoff rate by one-fourth of a cent per bushel of corn marketed. The certified results show the referendum passed decisively with nearly 74 percent of producers in favor of the increase. A simple majority was needed to pass the referendum. The new rate of one cent per bushel marketed will go into effect on September 1, 2012. The last increase in the checkoff was in 2008 when it was raised to threequarter of a cent per bushel marketed. The corn checkoff is collected on corn that enters commercial channels, but not on grain used on-farm. Producers are able to request a refund of their checkoff contribution; that was not affected by the vote. In accordance with Iowa Code, the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship conducted the vote and certified the results. All costs incurred by the Department of Agriculture will be reimbursed by the Corn Promotion Board. The Iowa Corn Checkoff was established by producer referendum in 1977. The Iowa Corn Promotion Board, consisting of farmers elected by their peers, invests checkoff dollars for research, education, promotion, and market development. For information on how checkoff dollars are used, contact the Iowa Corn Promotion Board at 515-225-9242 or go online at www.IowaCorn.org.

Ag student organization PAS national office relocates to DMACC The National Postsecondary Agricultural Student Organization (PAS) is relocating its national office to the Des Moines Area Community College’s (DMACC’s) Ankeny Campus. It will be housed in the FFA Enrichment Center. In addition, DMACC Agri-Business Chair Craig McEnany, of Nevada, will become the new executive director for the organization. The National PAS is a collegiate association dedicated to ag education and helping students prepare for a career in agriculture. Since its founding in 1979, membership has grown to 1,400 students from 62 chapters located in 18 states. DMACC was selected over other competing colleges and universities. “This is a tremendous honor for DMACC and will allow us to promote leadership and skill develop-
ment as well as showcase the college and our fine ag programs to a national audience,” said Rob Denson, DMACC president. He credited the selection to many factors, including the growth and commitment of DMACC’s ag program, the new FFA Enrichment Center and to McEnany’s experience in ag education. For nearly 25 years, McEnany has served as a professor in DMACC’s ag program and has taken an active role as advisor to the Agribusiness Club that’s been affiliated with the National. In his current position as executive director, he will continue to serve as classroom instructor with a modified schedule as program chair overseeing the college livestock and grain learning laboratory. During his years at DMACC, McEnany has served the Iowa PAS organization as its executive director and was a member
of the National PAS Board of Directors from 1994 to1998 and was recognized as the Outstanding PAS Advisor at the national level in 1994. He has been a member of the National Council for Agricultural Education serving in the capacity of vice president and also as the Region III vice president on the National Association of Agricultural Educators board from 2008 to 2011. DMACC’s agri-business classes are conducted in the two-story, $12.6 million FFA Enrichment Center, which is also the Iowa FFA Foundation headquarters. The building includes a glass-enclosed lobby, breakout rooms, a large conference room, classrooms, laboratories and office space. DMACC offers a twoyear Associate in Applied Science degree in agribusiness, commercial horticulture and veterinary technology. In addition,
DMACC offers a one-year certificate in agri-business agronomy, agri-business animal science, agri-business farm management, agri-business sales and services, turf maintenance, greenhouse production and landscape design. DMACC students get hands-on in precision agriculture, as well as livestock and crop production at the college’s Dallas County farm located two miles north of Adel. The Dallas County farm has a 50-head cow-calf operation, a 12-sow farrow-finish swine operation and 227 acres of corn, soybeans and hay with approximately 80 acres of pasture. The National PAS Organization is one of the 11 career and technical student organizations that have been approved by the U. S. Department of Education as an integral part of career and technical education.

Farm rents and the drought – now what? by Mark Gannon and Kevin Brooks, US Farm Lease A question we are now getting frequently at US Farm Lease is, “How is the drought and excessive heat going to affect my cash rent?” This is being asked by both landowners and tenants. The best answer is, “It is too early to tell.” Just this morning, I was asked, “Are the farmers going to survive?” In many parts of the Midwest, the answer to these questions will depend on financial stability, marketing talents (or luck), good soil tilth, and crop insurance. Row crop agriculture, in general, has had good years for a while, enabling many operators to build up equity and reserves, which will help carry them through leaner times. Some who took this opportunity to expand in various areas, such as equipment, may be second guessing themselves, but may still be fine financially depending on how they handled financial and production risk. If they rented land that was adequately protected by crop insurance or if they had adequate financial reserves, then, they should come through the year in okay shape. If the producer chose lesser amounts of crop insurance coverage or spent extra cash reserves, then, the picture becomes less clear. Marketing is always a key to profitability. Studies show that producers are better off in most years by marketing their grain early. The main problem to this strategy is when there is adverse weather. A big concern during years of adverse weather is when farmers are prudent and forward sell more bushels than what they grow. With this year’s adverse weather, the producer now may not grow enough grain to cover their marketing contracts. This strategy can easily be protected by Federal Crop Insurance. If the producer does not adequately insure and has substantial yield loss, the producer will have to buy corn that is more expensive to fill their contract obligations. Marketing procrastinators who chose not to market early will be okay in this regard, if they grew adequate
bushels or have adequate crop insurance. However, procrastination is not a habit of producers who are good financial managers. So what can landowners do to protect themselves during adverse weather years, such as this year? The first line of defense is to select a great tenant who is conscientious about keeping the farm soils in good condition. Good soil condition (tilth) farms are most ready for drought years. They have good soil structure for increased water-holding capacity and natural fertility that has been maintained through the years. These farms generally have higher organic matter, another factor which increases water holding capacity. Too much tillage and operating equipment across soil that is wet leads to soil compaction, which diminishes soil condition. If your farmer is paying rent in installments after harvest, requiring adequate levels of Federal Crop Insurance is in order. Crop Insurance may be a savior for many this year. A farm that has a 180 bu/acre corn yield and an 80 percent revenue assurance policy had an $820/acre revenue guarantee based upon a $5.68 spring 2012 coverage price. This same farm would have a $502 guarantee on soybeans with a 50 bu/acre proven yield and a $12.55 spring coverage price. The variable production costs (fertilizer, seed, and chemicals) for Midwest farms are roughly $330/acre for corn and $180/acre on soybeans according to University sources. As long as the producer didn’t pay more than $490/acre for corn land and $322 on soybean land then the variable costs are covered. Crop insurance coverage levels can be purchased for up to 85 percent of revenue based on proven yields. In addition, crop insurance can be purchased that allows for a seasonal price increase, should prices be higher in the fall. If there is widespread drought damage, then crop prices will be substantially higher this fall and Federal Crop Insurance can adjust for that. Farm operators and crop share owners that don’t have adequate crop insurance have gambled big this year and this gamble could cost
them dearly. What if my farmer is a livestock producer? First of all, livestock manure as a fertilizer generally helps soil condition, especially when applied at recommended levels and if heavy equipment is not used when soils are wet, which causes compaction. Livestock producers that need to purchase corn for feed will be at a financial disadvantage, if prices are higher this fall. Livestock producers that grow their own corn for feed can greatly benefit from Federal Crop Insurance on their crops. There are other marketing tools the livestock producer can use to protect their feed costs. The message at this time is that it is still too early to tell about farm profitability for 2012, but it looks like profits should be fine for the row crop folks, if they are good risk and production managers. The take-home message for landowners is that you need to take an active approach to managing your farm investment and you need to know what is going on with your farmland. The better your farm’s soil condition is maintained and soil tilth monitored, the better off you and your tenant will be during adverse weather conditions. Farm rents and incomes are based upon gross incomes, thus, the higher the gross income then the higher the profit for all. Yields cannot be controlled, but they can be maximized by having the soil ready for the growing conditions. Unfortunately, many farmland owners have very little working knowledge of their farm. The active landowner will find great benefit in active knowledge about their investment, so they can know what is going on which will help to improve the land. US Farm Lease (877-232-4002, info@usfarmlease.com) has the tools and knowledge needed in assisting you to achieve maximum profitability for you and your farmer. As landowners, here are a few simple things you can do to protect your farm: Require Federal Crop Insurance at Higher Levels of Coverage with a Fall Price Increase Guarantee Insist on less tillage and higher plant residue coverage on your soil

America’s Farmers Food Drive to benefit local food pantries August 28 through 30 Nearly 15 percent of rural households in America face food insecurity, which amounts to an estimated three million families, according to Feeding America, the nation’s largest domestic hunger relief organization. Families in these communities are often busy helping to feed the world but do not have access to enough food to sustain a healthy lifestyle. But thanks to the America’s Farmers Food Drive, rural households across the state of Iowa will soon see food on their table. The fourth annual America’s Farmers Food Drive, sponsored by Monsanto in conjunction with Farm Progress and the Howard G. Buffett Foundation, will take place at the Farm Progress Show August 28 through 30 in Boone. The first 250 attendees who donate a bag of food at the Farm Progress Show entrance will be given free entry upon arrival. “The food that is collected will stay local and benefit
the communities of those who donated,” said Linda Arnold, Monsanto customer advocacy lead. “Through the America’s Farmers Food Drive, we strive to raise awareness of rural hunger. We hope to surpass 10,000 pounds, which was raised at last year’s Farm Progress Show in Decatur, Illinois.” All FFA chapters and 4-H clubs in Iowa are invited to participate in the America’s Farmers Food Drive. Students who donate food will receive free entry to the Farm Progress Show, and the top three FFA chapters and top three 4-H clubs that donate the highest amount of food, in pounds, will be awarded $250 directly to their organization. Additionally, for every pound of food collected, Monsanto will donate $1 (up to $10,000) to United Way of Story County, and the Howard G. Buffett Foundation will donate $1 (up to $10,000) to Feeding America. “America’s farmers are already leaders in trying to create a more food secure world,” said Howard G. Buf-

fett, HGBF president. “But we must always remember that 50 million Americans struggle to keep food on the table every day; the America’s Farmers Food Drive is an opportunity for farmers to do what they do best: help feed our families, friends and neighbors.” From Muscatine to Storm Lake, Monsanto sites across the state will also be participating in a food drive competition for the month of August. The food that is raised from each site will be donated to a local food pantry. Monsanto launched the America’s Farmers Food Drive in 2009 at the Farm Progress Show in Decatur, Illinois, which resulted in more than 40,000 pounds of food being donated to United Way to date. Visitors to the 2012 Farm Progress Show can donate food at collection centers located at the three public entrance gates, in addition to the vendor entrance gate August 28 through August 30.

Bribes and beginnings My boys are going to miss the first day of school because we’ll be at the Iowa State Fair. I’ve taught them that choices have consequences before they were able to properly say the word consequence. My oldest son made the choice last year to show a steer at the state fair, knowing his consequence would be to miss the first day of high school. My husband and I did our best to convince the school board that having the school year start after the state fair ends would not be the worst thing in the world. We tried to appeal to the educational nature of kids going to the state fair. We tried telling them of other schools that began after the state fair ended, who still were finished with their first semester before the break. None of that worked. So as my oldest son is preparing and showing his steer at the fair, the rest of his classmates will be learning the class rules and getting their first assignments of the school year.
He doesn’t care. He’s worked hard on his 4-H project and wants to see it through to the end, even if that does mean he misses his first day of high school. Now I’m in a pickle. Do I take the first day of school photos at the fair on Wednesday? Or, do I take them at home as they are going off to school on Thursday? I’ll probably go with both. Really. Last week, I allowed my nine year old to come with me to pick out his school supplies. Big mistake! It took an hour and a half to go through the store to find everything. Because he’s now going into fourth grade, he now gets to have his own PE clothes and shoes too, instead of just running around in his street clothes for PE. Apparently sweat starts to smell around fourth grade. I never got that memo when I went to fourth grade. I think we had real PE clothes in fifth grade. So, in 32 years, kids have gotten
smelly earlier in their lives. Good to know. Back to the hour and a half we spent shopping for supplies, I’m kind of glad the school doesn’t put out a list for high school kids. After 9 years of finding supplies for the big kid, I’m ready to just give him some money, drop him off at the store, and go drink some coffee until he gets done. If he’s capable of wandering around the state fair by himself when he’s not showing the cattle, he’s capable of picking out his own supplies. I may have to have final approval before purchase, though he usually makes good decisions. My youngest son showed a calf for the first time at the Four County Fair in Dunlap earlier this week. Jenny was the bottle calf that he took to the fair last year, and has been raising for the past year. Unfortunately, my husband and his big brother haven’t been helping him lead it as much as it should have been led. So my son was stepped on a few times by a calf who didn’t seem

to walk straight. I was called to the fairgrounds on Sunday night to give him a pep talk. I’m not really good with pep talks, but I am good with choices and consequences. Sure, he could quit, but would he continue to keep taking the easy way out for the rest of his life, I asked him. I told him I was not going to have a 25-yearold son living at home, and
eventually he would have to go to college, then find a job and home of his own. (I told you I’m not good with the pep talks.) He wants to go to veterinary school, which I told him would be difficult. I asked him if he was going to give up if it started to get too hard to do. If his choice was that he was going to start giving up, the consequence would be that he would have a much harder life. (Really, I’m not good at the pep talks, people!) In the end, we got him back in the ring to walk Jenny around a few times. We had the superintendent tell him that other adults would be in the ring to help him if Jenny started being naughty. But the thing that really encouraged him was us bribing him with a new video game. He hasn’t had one for a year and a half, so he was due anyway. He might start to request rewards every time things are hard, but we can say no. I’m fine with that parenting consequence.

Producers need to consult crop insurance agent before harvesting or destroying drought-damaged crops Nearly 90 percent of the corn and soybean acres in Iowa are covered by multiple peril crop insurance. Drought damage is an insurable loss under these policies. Producers should consult with their crop insurance agents before harvesting or destroying any droughtdamaged crops, said William Edwards, an Iowa State University Extension and Outreach economist. "The agent will notify a certified crop adjustor to appraise the insured crops," Edwards stated. "Keep in mind that when damage is widespread, adjustors cannot be everywhere at once. The adjustor may declare the crop a complete loss. If it has significant yield potential, it can be left and harvested in the fall. If the producer elects to harvest it early, as silage, check strips can be left to verify the actual yield achieved. In any case, the acres must be released by the insurance company before the crop can be harvested early or destroyed." Any insurance indemnity payments will be settled based on actual harvested production over the entire insurance unit, Edwards said. Fields declared a complete loss will be combined with any harvested acres in the same insurance unit to calculate the final yield. Yield losses are equal to the farm’s
historical yield times the level of guarantee purchased, minus the actual yield. Ninety percent of the insured acres in Iowa are covered by Revenue Protection insurance policies in 2012. Yield losses will be paid at a rate equal to the average CME futures price during the month of October, if it exceeds the average February price of $5.68 for corn (December contract) or $12.55 for soybeans (November contract). Following harvest, the usual evidence of actual production should be collected and submitted to the crop insurance agent as soon as possible if it appears that a payment is likely, but not later than 15 days after the end of the insurance period, which is December 10 for corn and soybeans in Iowa. If a producer has a history of selling more than half the crop in the tax year following harvest, reporting of crop insurance proceeds can be deferred to the next tax year, Edwards said. More information about crop insurance policies and procedures can be found on the Ag Decision Maker website at www.extension.iastate.edu/agdm/cdcostsreturns.html. For additional crop, livestock and home and yard drought related information see Dealing with Disasters.

Lundell plastics completes 16,000 square foot R&D expansion A leader in plastic products for the agricultural industry, Lundell Plastics continues to grow both its sales and facility in Odebolt. Marking the third expansion to their headquarters in 10 years, a 16,000 square-foot addition houses a brand new research and development area and greatly increases storage capacity for popular products such as Poly Cupped Flighting. The addition has also opened up space for the addition of a new five-axis CNC router, which will significantly expand Lundell’s production capabilities.
Customers will begin to see the benefits of the expansion quickly, said Matt Roeder, engineer at Lundell Plastics. “The expansion will allow us to have more finished product in stock, which will cut down on lead time for our customers,” Roeder stated, “and having a dedicated R&D area should help us bring new products to market faster than ever before.” Products like ExoPlate, a protective poly equipment lining, have gained popularity in recent years. The new five-axis CNC router will enable more complex
finish operations for thermal-formed parts. The router will also enable in-house tooling production to help bring new products to market faster. The company is looking forward to seeing the results of the new expansion in the form of cutting-edge product developments and increased customer satisfaction. “We are never satisfied to be standing still,” said Roeder. “This expansion will really help us bring new ideas to the table quickly and signals a new era for Lundell Plastics.”

Spreadsheet calculates cost of CRP hay and grazing With the announced August 2 opening of Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) ground in all Iowa counties for emergency haying and grazing for certain practices, producers may be wondering whether to use their land for those purposes. The Iowa Beef Center at Iowa State University has offered a new spreadsheet that estimates hay cost per bale or ton and grazing cost per day for CRP forage. CRP pasture and hay won’t be high quality, but it can be used to extend other feed resources and help reduce pressure on other pasture and hay acres, according to ISU
Extension and Outreach beef program specialist Joe Sellers, who developed the spreadsheet. “The actual yield and quality of CRP tracts will vary, but in surveys conducted in past years, the average nutrient content has been 9.7 percent crude protein and 50.9 percent TDN,” Sellers said. The spreadsheet calculates the forage cost per bale or ton of hay and the cost per grazing day, by accounting for the cost of 10 percent of lost CRP payment, the anticipated harvest cost and yields, he said. The tool will be useful in evaluating CRP as a feed alternative for cow-calf

producers with short pastures and limited hay availability. IBC staff member Garland Dahlke worked with Sellers to create the CRPhay2012 spreadsheet, available at no charge from the IBC website. For assistance balancing beef cow diets with low quality hay, producers should contact their local ISU Extension beef program specialist. Those interested in using CRP ground for haying or grazing must follow Farm Service Agency rules and should direct all questions about CRP availability and the request process to their local FSA office.
Iowa biodiesel production continues to grow in second quarter The Iowa Renewable Fuels Association (IRFA) announced Wednesday that biodiesel production increased in the second quarter compared to the first three months of 2012. According to figures released by the Iowa Department of Revenue (DOR), 10 Iowa biodiesel plants produced more than 54.9 million gallons from April through June, up from the 41.8 million gallons produced in the first quarter of the year. “If these levels hold, Iowa will set a biodiesel production record in 2012 of around 200 million gallons,” said IRFA Executive Director Monte Shaw.

“And it is important to remember that demand for soybean oil used to produce biodiesel helps lower the cost of soybean meal that livestock feeders are purchasing.” In 2011, the Iowa Legislature enacted a shortterm, modest biodiesel production tax credit to help Iowa’s biodiesel community compete against states that provide large biodiesel incentives. The Iowa program went into effect on January 1, 2012. A study released earlier this year by economist John Urbanchuk, technical director of Cardno ENTRIX, found that biodiesel production:
Supported 7,350 Iowa jobs Boosted Iowa’s gross domestic product by nearly $600 million Generated $350 million in additional Iowa household income The complete study can be found at: www.iowarfa.org/RenewableFuelsPowerIowaEconomyThroughRecession.php. Iowa is the leader in renewable fuels production. Iowa has 41 ethanol refineries capable of producing nearly 3.7 billion gallons annually. In addition, Iowa has 13 biodiesel facilities with the capacity to produce 320 million gallons annually.

World Livestock Auctioneer sells at Dunlap Livestock Auction by Gordon Wolf Late Friday morning Bailey Ballou looked at the crowd of buyers at Dunlap Livestock Auction, trying to gauge attitudes during a volatile market. Ballou, the 2012 Livestock Marketing Association (LMA) World Livestock Auctioneer Champion, was invited to demonstrate his talents during the 62nd anniversary of Dunlap Livestock Auction. The 32-year-old native of Elgin, Oklahoma, has been enjoying his travels as the champion auctioneer. “The enjoyable part is getting to go to all the different markets and seeing how a person has to sell,” he stated, “It is so diverse how you have to market livestock from one area of the county to another.” Ballou exhibited perseverance in his quest to become the champion auctioneer, mentioning in his blog on the LMA website (www.lmaweb.com) that he “got his tail kicked” in 2006 and 2007. He was bested in the 2008 championships, skipped the competition in 2009 and finished eighth overall in 2010. Ballou also skipped the competition in 2011. “It’s really tough,” Ballou said of the auctioneering championships. “More than anything you need to have
the stars line up for you and to be prepared. You have to go into it knowing that it is all subjective. You need your judges to be there that year.” Ballou went to auctioneering school at the end of 2003 but didn’t begin using his skills and talents until 2005 when he started selling livestock. He has worked at the Oklahoma National Stockyards in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, for two years. He also owns a topsoil company with his father, Billy, and works for Stallings Auction and Real Estate in Lawton, Oklahoma. Ballou became interested in auctioneering at a young age. Both grandfathers had cattle and he went to auctions with them. “Most kids are kind of enamored with what an auctioneer can do and the sound of it. I always tried to emulate that. I picked up a natural ability that I really didn’t know I had,” he stated. He credited Joey Stallings with Stallings Auction and Real Estate for providing valuable lessons in auctioneering. “As far as learning how to read buyers, I probably learned more from Joey than anybody in the world. He
has been a tremendous, tremendous help in my career.” Ballou said auctioneering is different this year due to the drought. “It’s getting a little tougher now. This market in the last 60 days has come way down, but previous to that, during the last year and a half to two years, it was kind of ‘run it up a pole and find somebody.’ Now you have to sell them a little harder,” he stated. “You have to be a little more patient and a little more understanding of what these guys are thinking. They’re putting their money out there in a really unstable market,” Ballou added. Ballou said the auction method allows sellers and buyers to find a true market value on all classes of cattle. “The market owners are very diligent in doing their jobs to make sure the buyers are in the seats,” he commented. “They are on the phones and out in the country drumming up buyers. You have someone at your local market working diligently all the time to sell your cattle, and it’s not just on the sale date. They’re working all week long, all month and all year, and they’re in connection with all the buyers - corporate, local and area-wide.”

AUGUST 2012 FARM, from Page 1B The farm itself was built and is now maintained by Concerned clients. They measured, cut and assembled the wood the 56 plant beds sit on. Clients planted the seeds and helped set up the watering system. Each day, clients monitor the plants, unplug watering holes and maintain the cleanliness and functioning of the operation. Burroughs explained that clients may choose whether or not they want to work in the farm. “Some clients like to get dirty or some just like to sweep the floor,” she said. “But if they voice that they want to work in the farm, we get them back here.” She continued that the farm provides a working environment that allows the client to relax as well as see the progress of his or her hard work. “Clients might come back here and plant seeds and then after a while, move the seeds to the grow bed and eventually get to pick the produce,” Burroughs said. “It’s really neat for clients to be able to see the progress from start to finish.” Once the plants are harvested, they are sold throughout the Harlan area, mainly at the Farmers Market. Burroughs said if people want, they can purchase vegetables at the Concerned headquarters. A few specialty grocery stores in Denison have enquired about purchasing Concerned produce. Clients plant an array of vegetables which includes peppers, lettuce, tomatoes and herbs. But they also take special orders. A man with a brick oven pizza business in Harlan asked Concerned to grow basil. An ethnic specialty store in Denison would like to purchase its cilantro from

AUGUST 2012 the farm because it would arrive nearly three weeks earlier than other sources. Concerned currently grows both herbs as well as others to accommodate the needs of their customer base. The farm’s success not only relies on the minds of Burroughs and the Concerned staff but also depends on the contributions of the community. A fish producer based in New Mexico donated the first 400 fish to Concerned. The construction and now operation of the farm was completely funded by donations and personal contributions. In order to continue to fund the farm, Concerned has established a “sponsor a node” program. Area companies or individuals may donate the necessary funds to operate a “node” which is composed of several grow beds. Burroughs said each node requires around $1,200 to build. Concerned also has opened its doors to several community groups for tours and presentations about the farm. To learn more about the farm, or to schedule a tour, contact Patti Burroughs at 712755-5834 or e-mail pburroughs@concernedinc.com . Burroughs said they are working hard to expand the size of the farm as well as the reach of their produce. She explained that in the near future, the fish at Concerned will be able to reproduce which could lead to the sale of tilapia to small market grocery stores. No matter the ambitions of Burroughs towards the farm, she explained that as the only known yearround aquaponics farm in

operation, no handbook on what will and won’t grow or how to grow them in an aquaponics environment exists. Plants, growing methods and even fish care have been approached with many hours of research and development. “As far as I know, this is one-of-a-kind and there is no ‘how to’ manual to be successful,” she stated. “But we’re very pleased with the progression of the operation, and it helps that there is more information out there now than there was when we started.”

New drought assistance for farmers announced by USDA More than half of all U.S. counties designated disaster areas
to hay and graze acres that have been ineligible in the past. Many of these additional acres have wetland-related characteristics and are likely to contain better quality hay and forage than on other CRP acres. Approximately 3.8 million acres will now be eligible for emergency haying and grazing, subject to certain conditions. Haying and grazing may only occur under strict compliance rules to help minimize impacts on these sensitive specialty practices. In addition, USDA will conduct follow-up monitoring and evaluation of the opened CRP areas to study the effects of the drought and USDA’s emergency haying and grazing actions. Producers should contact their local Farm Service Agency offices for additional information. Federal crop insurance Crop insurance companies have agreed to provide a short grace period for farmers on insurance premiums in 2012. To help producers who may have cash flow problems due to natural disasters, Secretary Vilsack sent a letter to crop insurance companies asking them to voluntarily defer the accrual of any interest on unpaid spring crop premiums by producers until November 1, 2012. In turn, to assist the crop insurance companies, USDA will not require crop insurance
Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced on August 1 two new pieces of disaster assistance for farmers and ranchers impacted by the nation’s worsening drought. First, Vilsack is expanding emergency haying and grazing on approximately 3.8 million acres of conservation land to bring greater relief to livestock producers dealing with shortages of hay and pastureland. Second, the secretary announced that crop insurance companies have agreed to provide a short grace period for farmers on insurance premiums in 2012. As a result, farming families now have an extra 30 days to make payments without incurring interest penalties on unpaid premiums. Emergency haying and grazing In response to the expanding drought, Secretary Vilsack announced that livestock producers and other participants in the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) will now be able
companies to pay uncollected producer premiums until one month later. As of Wednesday, August 8, 46 Iowa counties had been designated as primary natural disaster areas and 22 Iowa counties had been named contiguous disaster counties, due to the drought. Primary counties in Iowa designated as disaster areas are Appanoose, Benton, Black Hawk, Boone, Bremer, Buchanan, Butler, Cedar, Clayton, Clinton, Davis, Delaware, Des Moines, Dubuque, Fayette, Grundy, Hamilton, Hardin, Henry, Iowa, Jackson, Jasper, Jefferson, Johnson, Jones, Keokuk, Lee, Linn, Lucas, Lyon, Mahaska, Marion, Marshall, Monroe, Muscatine, Plymouth, Polk, Poweshiek, Scott, Sioux, Story, Tama, Van Buren, Wapello, Wayne and Woodbury. Contiguous counties are Allamakee, Cerro Gordo, Cherokee, Chickasaw, Clarke, Crawford, Dallas, Decatur, Floyd, Franklin, Greene, Ida, Louisa, Madison, Monona, O’Brien, Osceola, Warren, Washington, Webster, Winneshiek and Wright. More than half of all counties in the United States have been designated disaster areas by USDA in 2012, mainly due to drought.
