NITROGEN SULFUR SYNERGY PLUS Patent Pending URAM is the best nitrogen sulfur fertilization method for many reasons. The addition of Agrotain and/or DCD (dicyandiamide) will further enhance the effectiveness of URAM. Agrotain slows the conversion of urea N into ammonium N. U.S. Ag Exports Reach All-Time High By Robert Pore, The Grand Island Independent U.S. farm exports reached an all-time high of $75 billion during the first half of fiscal year 2011, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. News of the increase in farm exports led Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack to say, "America's farmers and ranchers are helping lead the way to recovery from the worst economic recession in decades." He said the gains in U.S. agricultural exports are particularly encouraging news for those who live in rural America or earn a living in farming, ranching or agriculture-related industries because exports are creating jobs here at home. "Farm exports alone will support more than 1 million jobs in America this year," Vilsack said. "Strong U.S. farm exports will be a key contributor to building an economy that continues to grow, innovate and out-compete the rest of the world." Agricultural trade is vital to Nebraska's economy. According to the USDA, Nebraska was ranked fourth in the nation in 2009 in ag trade with a value of $4.83 billion. The leading trade commodities from Nebraska are soybeans at $1.37 billion; feed grain and products, $1.36 billion; and live animal and meat products, $1.07 billion. The strong farm exports are on top of high commodity prices that are increasing farm income. The USDA reported that average cash corn prices in Nebraska in mid-April were $7 per bushel for wheat, compared to $3.87 per bushel last year at the same time; corn, $6.10 per bushel, compared to $3.44 per bushel; soybeans, $12.60 per bushel, compared to $9.33 per bushel; nationally, steers and heifers, $121 per hundredweight, compared to $101 per hundredweight; and all barrows and gilts, $68.40 per hundredweight, compared to $56.60 per hundredweight. Vilsack said that, at $75 billion, U.S. agricultural exports for fiscal year 2011 are 27 percent higher than in the same period last year. "This puts us on track to reach the current USDA export forecast of $135.5 billion by the end of the year," he said. Vilsack said China was the top U.S. export market, with $15.1 billion in farm exports, which accounted for nearly 20 percent of all U.S. agricultural exports. Canada is the second-largest market.
"Both the value and volume of exports rose in the first half of the year, with the volume of bulk shipments up 5 percent from last year," Vilsack said. "Wheat and cotton volumes were especially robust, with increases of 64 percent and 44 percent, respectively." He said March was the highest-grossing month for U.S. agricultural exports ever. "During that month alone, U.S. farmers and ranchers exported $13.3 billion worth of U.S. agricultural goods," Vilsack said. "That's $407 million more than the previous record set in November 2010." Vilsack said that Congress can help U.S. farmers and ranchers sustain their record growth by moving expeditiously to pass the South Korea, Colombia and Panama trade agreements. "When fully implemented, those three agreements have potential to add more than $2 billion per year to our exports and support job creation here at home," he said. "Gains like these will help farmers and ranchers continue to contribute to President Obama's National Export Initiative goal of doubling all U.S. exports by 2014." National Corn Growers Association Chief Executive Officer Rick Tolman also said the pending free trade agreements with Korea, Colombia and Panama will help farmers and ranchers. "Increased production and a consistent product make the United States a reliable supplier of corn in the world market," Tolman said. He said NCGA strongly supports passage of the three pending free trade agreements with Korea, Colombia and Panama. "Beyond increasing domestic and international demand for corn, passing these FTAs also benefits our customers in the livestock and poultry industries," Tolman said. "Developing new markets for our country's agricultural products will help our sector lead the nation in economic growth and international competitiveness." He said the United States is the largest corn producer and exporter in the world, and exports of corn and corn co-products are essential to producer income. Tolman said that, during the 2009-10 marketing year, the United States exported 50.4 million metric tons of corn worldwide. "Corn co-products, such as distiller's dried grains, represent a growing export market for domestic producers," he said. "Our members want to maintain current
export markets and significantly increase demand for corn through opportunities in value-added corn products." But National Farmers Union President Roger Johnson said that, while the NFU supports fair, mutually beneficial trade that seeks to increase human welfare and respects sovereign nations' need for food and national security, the pending agreements lack key provisions for achieving this goal. "To meet these standards, we must follow the Trade Reform, Accountability, Development and Employment (TRADE) Act, which addresses environmental, health and labor standards of all countries involved in the agreement and deals with issues such as currency manipulation," Johnson said. "It would also increase inspections on imported food, mandate trade pact reviews and restore congressional oversight to future agreements." Johnson said the U.S. International Trade Commission projects that the Korea-U.S. Free Trade Agreement will cost 159,000 American jobs and worsen the U.S. trade deficit by $308 million to $416 million. "At a time of high unemployment, it is unwise to pass an agreement that would lead to even more job losses," Johnson said. "The U.S. stands to lose nearly 160,000 jobs, and that is a best-case scenario. That does not consider the fact that South Korea has a history of manipulating its currency and has recently taken similar steps to devalue their currency again, according to the U.S. Treasury Department. Such manipulation would worsen the trade deficit and would cause even greater job losses and higher trade deficits than projected." Johnson pointed out that, historically, the U.S. agriculture industry tends to do worse following the signing of trade agreements. "U.S. agriculture has a history of generating agriculture trade surplus," Johnson said. "We have a very efficient system of family farmers, ranchers and fishermen and have historically provided a safety net for agriculture that helps our producers survive difficult times. This has resulted in long-term agricultural surpluses. After America signs trade agreements with other countries, U.S. agriculture's trade balance actually worsens."
Susan Hansen, Extension Educator Colfax County Since 1940, lightning has caused the most weather-related deaths in the United States - more than floods, tornadoes or hurricanes. Because it usually strikes only one person at a time, lightning receives little media attention and doesn’t worry most people. In the United States, lightning strikes the land 20 million times a year. It has killed thousands of people since 1940, and injured many more, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Lightning occurs when positive and negative charges between thunderclouds and the ground overcome air resistance to electrical flows. The relationship between thunder and lightning can help with estimating the distance between a person and a storm, and the time available to take shelter, using the flash–to-bang method. Count the number of seconds that elapse between seeing the lightning and hearing
the thunder and divide by five. The answer equals the storm’s distance away in miles. However, the majority of lightning, 80 million flashes a year in the United States, stays within the clouds, unseen but still accompanied by thunder. Take shelter at the first sound of thunder. Watch the weather forecasts and remain close to shelter when thunderstorms are predicted. A car, tractor cab or non-metal building provide good protection. Never touch any metal parts of the shelter, or anything that might conduct electricity during a storm, including wire fences and water. Don’t ride in open vehicles or on horseback. If inside a house, stay off the phone and don’t shower or take a bath. Pipes and water are both good conductors of electricity. If reaching a closed structure is impossible, don’t lie flat on the ground. Create as little surface area as possible by squatting on the balls of the feet. Stay away from lone trees.

Tornado Safety Hinges on Practicing Emergency Plans Three-fourths of the world’s tornadoes occur in the United States. Most touch down in the Great Plains because of its geographic position in the middle of an atmospheric battle ground. Cold air from Canada meets warm air from the Gulf of Mexico, causing intensive updrafts and sending tornadoes roaring across the plains grasslands. Tornadoes have been sighted in every county in Nebraska. To ensure family home, school, work and outdoor safety, prepare and practice tornado emergency plans. Watch news and weather reports. Teach children to recognize their own county and surrounding counties so they understand the information given on TV, radio and the internet. Appoint someone to turn off the water, gas and electricity when a tornado is imminent. A tornado watch means that weather conditions are favorable for tornadoes to form. A tornado warning indicates a tornado has been sighted by a spotter or on weather radar.
In a warning, move directly to a safe area protected from flying glass and other debris, the major cause of tornado injuries and death. The best shelter is underground in a basement or storm shelter. Crouch under heavy furniture or behind a staircase near an interior wall if possible. Stay away from large glass objects like windows. Cover up with blankets, a mattress or pillows for protection from flying objects. If going underground is impossible, go to a small interior room with no windows, such as a bathroom or closet. If trapped outside, don’t try to outrun the storm. Stop the vehicle and find the lowest spot available. Lay down. Keep a safety kit available in an easily portable bag. Include a radio with battery back-up, flashlight, non-perishable food, first-aid kit and fresh water. The water should be changed at least every six months. Don’t use candles or matches after a tornado. Natural gas lines may be open. Tornadoes are invisible until they pick up dust from the earth and can reach up to 318 miles per hour in wind speed.

Recently, their horsepower was hoofing through five acres of bottomland, turning up the damp soil with an old-fashioned disk, with the driver, Brian McGinness, perched on the seat and steering them clear of the rows of garlic already sprouting. Brian and Angie McGinness have welcomed Rosie and Frank, a pair of Belgian horses, to Riverbound's CSA (communitysupported agriculture) enterprise south of Mandan. Rosie, a mare, and Frank, a gelding, retired at middle age (for horses) from the Wisconsin Amish farmers they worked for, and have now started a second career working at the McGinnesses' CSA farm nine miles south of Mandan on Highway 1806. Their introduction to North Dakota was a cold one, Angie McGinness said. The day the McGinnesses picked them up in Minnesota earlier this year, the ride back to North Dakota in the horse trailer was about 29 below, she said. Minneapolis - Moline

Horses and Cows Shot, Killed in Griggs County
Small Number of Cattle Killed by Predators
Sheriff Bob Hook says someone has been shooting livestock in eastern North Dakota's Griggs County. Hook tells KFGO radio that the latest targets were four horses at a farm east of Hannaford. He says all four animals died of head shots. They were found Thursday afternoon. About a week and a half ago three young cows were shot and killed in a pasture about half a mile from where the horses were shot. Hook says a .22-caliber gun was used in both cases, and he thinks they're related.
A federal report says the number of cattle killed by carnivores and natural predators like coyotes or dogs accounts for a small percent of all livestock losses. A report on cattle death losses released by the National Agricultural Statistics Service said nationwide, 5.5 percent of all cattle and calf losses came from predatory animals The report says the losses cost farmers more than $98 million. The report says 4.6 percent of the cattle and calf losses in Colorado came from predators in 2010. Most were killed by coyotes or bears. According to the report, 9.5 percent of the cattle and calf losses in Wyoming were due to predators. The report says non-lethal predator control measures like guard animals and fencing cost farmers and ranchers more than $188 million.

The Belgians eat a large round bale every week or so, ``but they don't eat gasoline,'' Brian McGinness said. The couple are acquiring their horsedrawn equipment from Walt Webster, 86, who lives near Fullerton. Webster was advertising the vintage pieces, including sulky plow, disk, a buck rake to make windrows, cultivator for weeding, and an overshot stacker that catapults hay bundles to make large piles, among other pieces, Angie McGinness said. This will be the couple's second full season of CSA operation. Tomato plants will be set out in their large greenhouse in the coming week, and they'll be planting 50 varieties of vegetables in all, she said, increasing their production by about 50 percent. About 75 to 100 households have signed up as shareholders in the McGinnesses sustainable growing operation - in a CSA, shareholders pay a seasonal fee for a weekly cache of whatever produce is in season; eggs and chickens also are part of the mix. Angie McGinness said that this year the couple is adding a pumpkin field. By fall, folks can take a wagon ride and pick out their own pumpkins, she said.

The 12-year-old Belgians weigh in at about 1,800 pounds, Angie McGinness said. Rosie is carrying a bit of extra weight, since she'll foal in about a month. Though the Amish retire their horses at age 12, they can work into their 20s and may live to about 30, she said. Recently, Rosie was feeling a little restless in her harness, but Frank was steady, he likes to work, Brian McGinness said. Angie McGinness, a Mandan native, said she grew up with horses, but her husband is newer to them. In preparation for working with Rosie and Frank, he spent a week in Vermont learning teamster skills. He's enjoying the pace and rhythm of working with horse-drawn equipment, she said. Riverbound Farm has about 40 tillable acres, which the McGinnesses will rotate; hayfield and pasture will be planted for the Belgians' feed and then swapped to vegetables, fertilizer already applied naturally, she said. The size of Riverbound makes working with horses ideal, she said. ``We've lowered our prices (because) we're using recycled equipment, and the horses can reproduce themselves,'' she said. ``Brian may want to breed Rose to a donkey; he'd like to work with mules.''

Tenants and Landlords Should Communicate for More Positive Relationships Kim J. Bearnes The key to positive relationships between landowners and tenants is open communication. Cash rents have been increasing throughout the past six years, increasing between 75 and 90 percent depending on the classification of land. This will make it difficult to bring prices back down when and if commodity prices drop. As a rule of thumb, landlords should receive between 25 and 30 percent of the gross per acre of crop. For example, the typical Nebraska irrigated corn field is 200 bushels per acre. If the local elevator price is around $5.50, the gross would be $1,100. At a 30 percent share, that would
be $330 per acre. Some landlords make that calculation and when rent is lower than the 25 to 30 percent range, they will think that they aren't getting a good deal. Market volatility creates uneasiness between landlords and tenants when developing rental rates. Extreme market swings can overwhelm and stress both parties because they aren't sure what to do. By maintaining open and honest communication with each other, strong relationships can be developed and kept. Landlords and tenants should discuss expenses and intentions of both parties. Some landlords are previous farmers, but they have lost track of current farmer expenses. Those expenses they used to have when they farmed have changed and
gone up dramatically. Tenants need to express that fact to landlords. Also, landlords may just want updates about their land to be able to share with their friends and family. Typically their land, their farm, is important to them and they want to be knowledgeable of what is going on. In some cases, landlords and tenants should consider flexible cash rents, taking the market price and yields into account and adjusting rent either up or down. In any case, volatility of the corn and soybean markets has created some interesting side effects, one of them being the cash rental rates for farm ground.
