Cowboys and cowgirls shaded from the hot sun by their large hats, most wearing long shirts, chaps and spurs as they set up lines to tie off their horses. Longhorn cattle taking long gulps of water before walking to the other side of the large pasture. The group of 35 people and 210 head of Texas Longhorn cattle were hunkering down around 1:30 p.m. on a recent Monday after walking about 20 miles in the morning from Kingman to Jack Fountain's pasture at the corner of Fountain Green and Peace Road, southwest of Arlington. ``We've had beautiful weather,'' said Carmen Schultz, from Medford, Okla. The drive is a three-week Kansas Sesquicentennial celebration. It's following Cox's Trail, or the Ellsworth Trail, an offshoot of the Chisholm Trail. The cattle follow a big steer named Roger - named after his owner. Schultz's

steers, Caldwell and Fleetwood, aren't too far behind. Soon after making camp, trail boss Mike Clover, from Kingman, was making sure everything was ready for dinner. He already knew where he was going to sleep. ``I'm going to sleep right out there in my bed roll,'' he said, pointing at the dry ground. Cox's Trail was named after William M. Cox, a general livestock agent for the Kansas Pacific Railway Company, who surveyed the trail in 1872 after Abilene said cattlemen who took the Chisholm Trail were no longer welcome.

Continued from page 3 Ellworth residents went down the Chisholm Trail and urged drovers - people who drive animals - to take a route through Ellsworth. By 1871, about 30,000 head of cattle had been shipped through the town, and Ellsworth began to thrive. Kansas actively enforced a quarantine rule in 1873 because of Texas Fever, which threatened the cattle industry. While town promoters told Texans they could still bring their cattle through, Ellsworth began to earn an unruly reputation like many other cow towns. Shipping pens were finally closed in the town in 1875. The group traveling on Cox's Trail can't follow the trail exactly because they can't trudge through private land. Instead, Schultz said, the group travels mainly on dirt roads. Next the group will head to a pasture near Sylvia. Along the way, they'll travel about 15 miles each day and stop at several cow towns, including Ellinwood and Ellsworth. They've already stopped by Caldwell and Kingman. ``I love doing this,'' Schultz said. People on Kansas Cattle Drive 2011 are sleeping on the ground and in tents. They take turns staying awake, making sure

the horses and cattle don't get loose and the fire stays lit. The group is keeping with history by pulling a couple of covered wagons. But there are a few modern conveniences including a working refrigerator/freezer combination and a couple of port-a-potties. ``With a mixed crowd, you need them,'' Schultz said with a smile. Ten years ago, Craig Opel, of Eagan, Minn., had an office on Fifth Avenue in New York City. He has been president of Bandelino Shoes and many department stores. Now retired, Opel spends a lot of time going on trail rides and seeing different parts of the country. On a lot of cattle drives, he's following the diaries of his ancestors - including Gouverneur Morris, a founding father who helped draft the U.S. Constitution. Opel has followed the Santa Fe Trail and has taken a chance on Nevada's Fearful Crossing on the old California Trail. Taking 210 cattle through Kansas is easy after following those trails. ``It's just cool to get involved,'' he said.

He will be with the group as it picks up 200 more Texas Longhorn cattle for the final leg of the journey. The group started in Caldwell on Sept. 3 and will end up in Ellsworth with a celebration on Sept. 24. Schultz is happy she gets to see the Kansas countryside. ``I'm seeing country I've never seen before,'' she said. ``It's drier than I thought it'd be.'' Want to follow the journey? Rotor loss in Corn, Soy beans & Wheat on all John Deere STS combines happens because of an over-loaded separation section. I introduced “The Disrupter”, (14 lugs bolted into the two front separation grates), in the summer of 2010 and the response was tremendous. (Disrupter lugs cut up corn shucks, green bean stems, & wheat straw). We have over 600 sets in operation. But the rotor loss problem still exists with 8 row and 12 row corn heads. The separation section in the JD STS, (in my opinion) is not large enough nor open enough to get 8 rows let alone 12 rows through without sacrificing a lot of ground speed. Corn, soy beans & wheat thrash completely over the first 1 & 1/2 round bar concaves, but very little separation will happen over the back half of the concave sections due to the small space between the remaining round bars. (5/8 inch)

I have designed a concave/grate that has 1/2” sq bars with 1 1/4” opening between. The new concave/grate will replace the rear concave on all of the STS machines. The 1/2” Square bars plus the 1 1/4 space between the bars will increase material volume flow by 68%. The more crop volume you can get out of the concave section, the less has to be separated over the grate section.

MITCHELL -- After harvest, some of the dry edible beans from the plots at the University of Nebraska Panhandle Research and Extension Center are bound for laboratories in Texas and Michigan. It's part of a program to improve worldwide dry bean production. Mapping beans' gene sequence is one piece of the effort. Scientists also are comparing drought resistance, nutritional value and disease among hundreds of cultivars, present, past and in the process of development for the future. Just before harvest, some of the UNL plots were inspected by UNL dry bean breeding specialist Dr. Carlos Urrea and one of the U.S. Department of Agriculture's top bean scientists. Working with Urrea was Dr. Phillip N. Miklas of Prosser, Wash., research geneticist with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Service. Miklas also is president of the Bean Improvement Cooperative, a voluntary and informal organization working for the exchange of information and materials for the improvement of bean production worldwide. Members include scientists, students, private organizations and lay people.

Miklas was at the Panhandle Center Sept. 12 with UNL Dry Bean Breeding Specialist Dr. Carlos Urrea to inspect plots with more than 300 lines of dry edible beans involved in the BeanCAP project. CAP stands for Coordinated Agricultural Projects. One of BeanCAP's goals is developing genomic tools and the genetic sequence for dry beans. Miklas said several other major crops, such as rice and corn, have already been genetically sequenced, and now it's dry beans' turn. Several factors are driving the increased interest in improving production of dry beans, Miklas said. More people are recognizing their health benefits, including high fiber, low fat, and several important nutrients. Some types of bean also help lower cholesterol. Dry beans also are on the lists of crops needing improvement for the Feed the Future Project, a U.S. government global hunger and food security initiative, Miklas said. Miklas and Urrea were inspecting the plots for maturity stage and uniformity, yield potential, and diseases. After harvest, the 300-plus lines in the Scottsbluff plots will be tested for nutritional content and the effects of drought

stress. Beans that were stressed will be compared with others that were fully watered. Seed will be tested in USDA-ARS laboratories at Baylor University and Michigan State University. The testing will measure iron and zinc content, and use genetic tools and sequencing to check for differences and determine which genes influence levels of these and other micronutrients. Similar plots with many bean varieties are being grown in Colorado, North Dakota, Michigan and Puerto Rico, Miklas said. He noted that Urrea has the ability to screen all the beans in the Scottsbluff plots for diseases. The 300-plus varieties represent U.S.bred cultivars from the 1930s to new lines that haven't yet been released for commercial production. The majority of the lines were bred in Idaho, Colorado, Nebraska, North Dakota, Washington and Michigan. Some were bred in other states and Canada. Studying many varieties that have been developed over a long period allows scientists to look at the U.S. breeding program over time, and whether it has made genetic gains in yield, Miklas said.

Farmland Values: The Effects of Commodity Prices, Yields, Profit Margins and Capitalization Rates Recent price increases for many of the crops grown in Nebraska have been followed directly by higher input costs. Land cost is one of these escalating factors. Typically, those that invest in real estate or land use a ratio of income relative to opportunity cost to evaluate the value of that purchase. This ratio involves factors related to the lands use and productive capacity, and is known as the “Capitalization rate” or “Cap Rate.” One source defines this rate as follows: “Capitalization rate defines the percentage number used to determine the current value of a property based on estimated future operating income. In other words, taking the net operating income from an apartment complex and dividing it by the capitalization rate would yield the approximate current value of the complex. The capitalization rate would be determined based on an appraisal and/or the cap rates of similar properties that have sold recently. By taking another apartment project that sold recently, determining its net operating income (NOI), you would divide the income by the sold price to get the cap rate.” http://realestate.about.com/od/ac/g/ def_cap_rate.htm. As suggested by the previous paragraph, the usefulness of the cap rate is its application in accessing the value of real property. This form of the relationship is achieved by algebraically manipulating Equation 1 into the form of Equation 2. Equation 2: Property Value =

In this discussion we are examining how commodity prices, yields, profit margins and the cap rate affect property values. To do this we disaggregate the NOI into its components, which yields commodity price, times expected yield, times profit margin as a measure of gross revenue. This substitution into Equation 2 creates Equation 3.

about $2,300 as a low, to a high of just over $11,600, a range of over $9,300.

Cap Rate

To illustrate the usefulness of this model and to make it operational, several assumptions will be made. The land valued will have a single productive use, growing corn; the expected profit margin is 25 percent of gross revenue; and the appropriate cap rate is five percent. These assumptions are based on observation and expert opinions, and are hoped to be representative of the true factors. Using two different yield and price expectations the resulting land values are as follows: Farmland that is expected to produce 240 bushels of corn with an expected value of $9.00/bu is valued at $10,800/acre. Conversely, farmland with a 200 bu/ac expected yield, and an expected corn price of $3.00/bu would be valued at $3,000. These two examples illustrate how price and yield expectations contribute to differences in farmland value. Varying profit margin and the cap rate also alters property value. The question is, “How does each of these variables contribute to changes in land value?” To better understand these factors and to answer this question, a series of simulations are created. These simulations vary each of the four factors individually and simultaneously. Due to the size limitations of this article a full explanation of the simulation process and a complete graphing of the results are omitted. However, these items are available from the author. The simulations are much like using dice in selecting a specific outcome or realization. Each of the factors outcome or realization is limited within a range, the cap rate varies between three and seven percent, corn yields between 200 bu/ac and 240 bu/ac, profit margin between 20 and 30 percent of gross revenue and prices between $2.00/bu and $8.00/bu. For simplicity, each factors realization is expected to be unrelated to the others. Results When all factors are varied simultaneously, the following 500 possible outcomes are mapped in Figure 1 . This figure shows a variation in land values ranging from

Holding all but one of the factors constant demonstrates the varied factors effect on land values. Through this process the price/bu factor creates the largest variation of all factors, with a range of $6,381 between the highest and lowest valued property when prices are varied from $2.00/bu to $8.00/bu. The other factors have smaller impacts on farmland values. The cap rate has the second largest variation of $5,680 from highest to lowest land values, as it ranges from three to seven percent. A change in profit margin from 25 to 30 percent follows the cap rate, resulting in a $2,190 range from high to low. The factor with the least effect is yields/acre, which is varied between 200 bu/ac to 240 bu/ac expected production, and only alters property values about $1,044, from high to low. These results are consistent with observed facts, where land values have risen quite rapidly in conjunction with rising corn prices. The cap rate, corn yields and profit margin factors are slower to change, and are likely not to change as drastically in a short period of time. In addition to noting the variation created by different factors on land values, it is useful to study these relationships as a forecasting tool. Figure 2 (on page 35) illustrates the relationship between corn price expectations and land values. The chart can be used as a forecast of expected future corn prices based on current land values. Montana Could Escape Hit From Cattle Infections

HELENA, Mont. (AP) _ The Montana Department of Livestock says a 32-year-old mule in Carbon County has been diagnosed with equine infectious anemia, also known as swamp fever. The potentially fatal equine virus is spread by biting insects. There is no vaccine or treatment for the disease, which is characterized by fever, depression, progressive weakness, weight loss, swelling and anemia. The agency said Monday the infected mule was discovered after a screening test was done because the owner planned to move it out of the state. Follow-up testing on two other equines located on the premises are pending. The mule is located in a remote area with little potential for exposure to other equines. Owners of equines with swamp fever have few options, ranging from a lifetime quarantine, euthanasia and donating the animal for research.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) _ Representatives of prominent Japanese flour milling companies are in North Dakota this week to get a better understanding of U.S. wheat breeding, production and marketing systems. The North Dakota Wheat Commission says Japan is consistently the top buyer of hard red spring wheat, the staple of North Dakota's agriculture industry. Japan imported 60 million bushels of hard red spring during the 2010-11 marketing year, the secondlargest quantity on record. The Japanese delegation is in North Dakota through Tuesday, meeting with breeders and quality specialists at North Dakota State University in Fargo, visiting a grain business in Casselton and touring a farm near Mapleton.

Cantaloupe Farmers Fear Long-lasting Impact ROCKY FORD, Colo. (AP) _ Farmers who grow Rocky Ford cantaloupes are hunkering down for a possible two- to three-year slump in sales because of the recent Listeria outbreak. Smith Farms spokesman Adam Smith tells KRDO-TV (http://bit.ly/n8cKjf) the Listeria outbreak nationwide has destroyed their sales this year and could have a lasting impact on a brand customers have grown to love. The Food and Drug Administration issued a recall after a melon farm in Colorado tested positive for a Listeria outbreak that has killed at least two people, sickened 22 and spread to several states. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says more cases have been reported and new figures will be released late Monday.

(AP) _ Oil isn't the only booming business in southwest North Dakota _ farmers and ranchers enjoying a good hay crop have been selling to their counterparts in southern states hit by drought. Scott Habiger with Habiger Hay Farms in Kansas tells The Dickinson Press (http://bit.ly/nxzrFm) that he's working with about five dozen farmers in North Dakota. He says he's hauled hundreds of loads of hay from the Dakotas, Montana, Nebraska and Wyoming. South Heart producer Bobby Kubas says many northern farmers have a surplus of hay. He says some have three times the amount they need for their own cattle, and some of the hay will go to waste if it isn't moved south. Kubas sold 1,500 bales through Habiger Hay Farms.

BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) _ Veterinarians say Montana ranchers are not likely to be sanctioned by other states over six suspected cases of brucellosis. That would signal an effective truce in the long-running debate over the animal disease. Tests are pending to confirm the suspected cattle infections in southern Park County. The disease causes pregnant animals to prematurely abort. It has been largely eradicated nationwide but persists in wildlife from the Yellowstone region of Montana, Idaho and Wyoming. Past infections prompted costly sanctions against the region's lucrative cattle industries. But the federal government and other states have softened their stance after more aggressive testing and vaccine programs were recently enacted. South Dakota veterinarian Dustin Oedekoven (Oh-dah-KOH-ven) says the discovery of the latest infections before the disease could spread farther shows the new programs are working.

(AP) _ The number of coyotes roaming North Dakota is up from last year, and although that might be exciting news for hunters, it's bad news for livestock producers. North Dakota Game and Fish Furbearer Biologist Stephanie Tucker tells the Dickinson Press (http://bit.ly/oUWeHV) that it's nearly impossible to track each individual animal, so information on the furbearers is collected using trend data. Tucker says the numbers are above the 10year average in all four regions surveyed. He says other animal populations have declined in the past few years because of the harsh winters, but coyotes have been able to thrive. Phil Mastrangelo, director of the U.S. Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services division in North Dakota, says he has noticed a slight increase in the number of calls for coyotes killing livestock.

remain high and the future expectation of commodity prices remain high. Adjustments in profit margin, cap rates and yield expectation will modify over

time, resulting in further refinements in property values. If profit margins shrink as a portion of gross revenue, land values will likely have a small decline. If yield increase expectations begin to fade, values may also fade, but not as strongly as the price effect. If the cap rate increases, values will also decay. If the prognostication that food production will have difficulty keeping up with the demand and crop prices have reached new trading ranges, which may go even higher, then high land values are here to stay. On the other hand, if the current high prices are temporary, then agriculture property is poised to be the new real estate bubble getting ready to burst.

Looking forward, regardless of the current market conditions, the most promising land tenure policy always has been and will always likely be, for buyers to have a solid business plan and use sound financial principals in their purchase and leasing decisions of this valuable resource.

Crossroads Coop is a major supplier of white proso millet to the bird seed industry and is a member of the Wild Bird Feeding Industry. UNL's program is maintained by Dr. Dipak Santra, alternative crops breeding specialist at the Panhandle Center, at a minimal level due to the lack of any dedicated funding. Present activities involve making new crosses followed by developing breeding populations; evaluating germplasm for improved traits such as larger seed, higher yield, tolerance to lodging and seed shattering, and suitability for direct combining; and developing modern breeding technologies such as DNA markers and other genomic tools. "I am very glad to see this initiative for supporting UNL's proso millet breeding program, the only one in the nation," Santra said. "I am excited to make use of this resource to build a nationally and internationally reputed breeding, genetics, and genomics program for developing superior varieties of proso millet." Crossroads Cooperative and the University of Nebraska Foundation have started a fund-raising drive to help support the proso-millet-breeding program at the University of Nebraska High Plains Ag Lab near Sidney and Panhandle Research and Extension Center at Scottsbluff. The Crossroads Co-op and The Friends of Proso Millet Research Fund will be used to support a full-time technician dedicated to proso millet breeding. UNL's breeding program, the only one in the nation, has operated at a slow pace for several years due to lack of funding. Those leading the fund drive say it would help ensure a continuous supply of breeding lines to test in the field, leading to the release of new varieties. It also would be used to develop modern breeding tools such as DNA marker technology, for developing new varieties faster and more efficiently, according to a letter being sent to dozens of potential donors. The letter came from Crossroads CEO Deb Brauer, Crossroads millet merchandiser Virgil Schumacher, and Linda Boeckner, District Director of the UNL Panhandle Research and Extension Center. It is being sent to Wild Bird Feeding Industry members, local growers and businesses affiliated with proso millet production.

Schumacher said CEO Brauer had heard several months earlier that the ag lab was having a hard time funding the millet breeding program and asked him to find out what the cooperative could do to help. Boeckner put him in touch with Barb Schlothauer of the University of Nebraska Foundation and the fund drive was initiated. "We here at Crossroads think millet is a very important cash crop not only for the producers but for all the business in western Nebraska, northeast Colorado and South Dakota," Schumacher said, noting that the goal is to raise enough money to keep this program going for the next three to four years in order to allow time to get a check-off program started, he said. "A check-off program of only 1 to 2 cents a bushel would allow this breeding program to expand and keep moving forward for years to come," he said. "The proso millet research at the university is vital to the bird seed industry...," the appeal states. "If new proso varieties are not introduced as time goes by, the older ones become susceptible to future stress (diseases, insects and so forth) and they start to lose their ability to have good yields." Proso millet contributes approximately $50 million annually to the bird seed industry. Nebraska growers usually harvest between 100,000 and 150,000 acres annually, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service. Over the past decade it has ranged from 50,000

We are reaching that time of year when household pests begin to invade homes. It happens every season as temperatures gradually move to the cooler side. A variety of these annoying insects, crustaceans, arachnids and their kin include boxelder bugs, crickets, ground beetles, millipedes, sowbugs, pillbugs and spiders. Most of these favor dark areas and dislike heat. In the case of millipedes and sowbugs dryness can be fatal, so they go looking for wetter quarters during summer drought conditions. On the other hand, heavy rains also can drive them out of their normal living areas, especially if the water level rises. Despite a scary appearance, most of these creatures are harmless; they don’t bite people and cause little damage to home furnishings. Most of the time, they will disappear within a few weeks. To reduce the numbers that might come inside this fall, now is the time to caulk all openings around windows, sole plates, door ways, conduits, and any other openings that can be located. Remember, the creatures can find openings that are most difficult for us to see. Caulking such orifices now is a good energy conservation practice also. Spraying outside the foundation and into the turf with a “labeled” insecticide may be helpful.

Many unwanted “things” will be killed before they find an opening to get inside the home. Sprays will need to be repeated every two or three weeks, as all unwanted guests do not arrive at the same time! Some of the insecticides that were commonly used for this purpose (Dursban and Diazinon) are no longer available. Seven, Malathion and some of the synthetic pyrethroid insecticides are still available for use as outside treatments for homeowner use. Cyfluthrin (Tempo) is an example of one of the synthetic pyrethroid products that is effective for spraying around the foundation of the house. Many of these are available at hardware stores and garden centers. Synthetic pyrethroid products pose far less risk to mammals than Organophosphate or Carbamate insecticide chemicals but have very little residual or long term control qualities. Over the last few years, chemists have been able to improve on Mother Nature's pyrethrin insecticides by developing better, odorless and more stable pesticide formulations. These products are available in liquid concentrates, wettable powders, insecticide dusts and granulated insecticides. Be sure to always read and follow the label when using any pesticide product! Perhaps the best control, once they are inside, is to just swat them or vacuum them up. Use of insecticides inside the home is not recommended.
