A Grade A facility New chicken hatchery in Goldfield features state of the art technology by Greg Forbes After nearly three years of preparation, a new industry has hatched in Wright County. Centurion Poultry Inc. (CPI), based in Lexington, Georgia, opened the new hatchery in Goldfield. According to Steve Hilleson, project manager, the CPIPrairie Gold Hatchery will have the capacity to produce 18 million – 175,000 twice per week – pullet hen chicks annually when production reaches its peak. Hilleson explained Goldfield was chosen as the site due to its proximity to CPI-Clarion Breeder Farm in nearby Clarion. “The number one reason for choosing Goldfield was that the breeder farm that supplies the eggs is seven miles away so the eggs don’t have to be transported far, he stated. The 35,000 square foot facility will replace an old Centurion hatchery in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin. The hatchery was designed to feature state-of-the-art as

well as energy efficient technology. “The hatchers we are putting in are technologically advanced and are controllable from a main computer or even a cell phone, Hilleson stated.
When the eggs arrive from the Clarion breeder farm, the machines begin their work by placing each egg from the pallets onto trays where the eggs are stored until it’s time for incubation.

Before the eggs are placed into one of two incubators, they must be disinfected. The Goldfield hatchery features two incubation rooms. The first room houses 14 incubators, each with a capacity of 115,000 eggs while the other also has 14 incubators each with a capacity of 77,000. Each incubator is monitored by a computer system that maintains an ideal environment for the eggs based on their hatching stage. “The hatchers we have installed are very, very energy efficient,” Hilleson said. “They use both hot and cold water to provide an idea climate. The incubators have different zones that have different temperatures, humidity and CO2 levels.” He continued that stages of the hatching process is monitored solely from a computer. A “profile” is designed to accommodate each step of the egg. When a profile is designed to include specific temperature, humidity levels and other factors, it is programmed in to a computer and may be assigned to either incubator. “Once we get the eggs in (to the incubator), we push a button and let it (profile) do the rest,” Hilleson said. The incubators, manufactured by Netherlands-based Pas Reform, are considered the most energy efficient yet top quality systems. After precisely 18 days in the incubator, the eggs sit in a specialized hatching room. When the eggs finally crack and the chicks emerge, they are sent to the processing room where a group of handlers gender check each newborn chick. The females are vaccinated and shipped to clients. The males, however, are, as Hilleson explained, “humanely disposed.” The remains of the male chicks are processed into animal feed. Each aspect of the hatchery was designed to ensure pro-

The CPI-Prairie Gold Hatchery of Goldfield opened for partial operation in February. At full capacity, the facility will be able to produce approximately 18 million pullet hen chicks annually. Gijs Schimmel, president of Centurion, as well as site managers and other Centurion officials, hosted an open house on February 17 for customers and guests. duction ran as efficiently as possible. In order to develop the best facility in the world, Hilleson and the development crew gathered ideas from more than a dozen hatcheries. “When we were in the process of evaluating and deciding on a provider, I visited 14 different hatcheries in the United States, Canada and the Netherlands. We learned a lot,” Hilleson said. “This is as good as it gets both machine wise and production wise.” While the facility will be the largest Centurion hatchery when fully operational, a few additions must be made. Until the facility is complete, the hatchery will produce small order hatches.

Hilleson said in nearly six months, the hatchery will be at full production and will staff 40 employees. “We do have people hired here that live in the Goldfield community,” he said. “Currently, we do have 12 active employees but we will be hiring more.” Positions will include hatchery and maintenance managers, people to oversee the transfer of eggs and other various employees to serve throughout the hatching process. When the chicks hatch, however, Hilleson said position status becomes irrelevant. “We will have some supervisors but everyone will be involved in chick processing when they hatch.”

Iowa Western team wins IPPA Student Taste of Elegance A student culinary team from Iowa Western Community College in Council Bluffs prepared the winning entrĂŠe in the Iowa Pork Producers Association’s 11th annual Student Taste of Elegance competition on March 4 at the Des Moines Area Community College Culinary Institute in Ankeny. The Iowa Western team of Adrianne Kessenich, Magdalena Francisco and Jenna Dunn prepared Grilled Honey Jalapeno Loin Chops with SautĂŠ Spaghetti Squash and Grilled Asparagus with Blue Cheese Reduction and won the event’s top prize. IPPA presented each winning team member with $100 cash and $1,000 for their school to use for scholarships or educational costs. “We would like to thank the Iowa Pork Producers Association for their hard work in putting this competition together and the Des Moines Area Community College for hosting this event each year,â€? said Karen Hander, an Iowa Western Community College culinary instructor. “We are so humbled to take home first place. The girls worked hard and I am
so proud of their accomplishments. A record 18 teams from culinary programs at Iowa Western, DMACC, Iowa Central Community College, Iowa State University and Scott Community College entered the IPPA competition. A Scott Community College team was second and an ISU team took third. Members of the top three teams each received a certificate from IPPA and each participating school was given $500 for expenses. The purpose of the event

is to inspire innovative and exciting ways for culinary arts students to use pork in their menus and to measure their progress. The students were required to prepare a main pork entrĂŠe using any fresh pork cut. A team of three professional Iowa chefs judged the entrees on taste, appearance and design. A fourth chef served as a critic and met with each team after judging to provide professional advice and answer questions. “Pork is such a versatile product and we love provid-
ing the opportunity for students to be creative with it. We had 18 teams this year – the most we’ve ever had – so we were pleased to see so many students show up eager to compete, said Linda Madison of the IPPA Restaurant & Foodservice Committee. “The judges were tough, but I think the students learned a lot about elegant food preparation. The IPPA Student Taste of Elegance is open to any Iowa college that has a culinary arts program.

New ISU weather stations to monitor soil moisture Farmers can check soil moisture levels around the state when Iowa State University’s Department of Agronomy upgrades weather stations at several research and demonstration farms. With drought conditions continuing across Iowa, ISU Extension agronomist Elwynn Taylor said the stations offer a risk management tool for crop producers. “The updated stations provide information on the soil moisture resource and the actual crop water consumption, Taylor said. “Farmers will be able to know the yield limits being placed on crop yield by water stress as the season progresses. The new stations replace ones that have been monitoring weather data at the farms for more than 30 years. Taylor said the original units made up the world’s first nonmilitary network of automatic reporting weather stations. They were networked, as the new ones will be, so their readings can be monitored on the Mesonet weather web site (mesonet.agron.iastate.edu/). Moisture sensors are placed a foot, two feet and four feet deep in the soil next to the station. Readings are taken every 15 minutes and sent by cellular phone text messages to the network. The weather stations also measure rainfall, air and soil temperature, humidity, sunlight, wind speed and direction. A solar collector powers the units. Taylor said the first of the new units was placed next to the previous model at the Northwest Research and Demonstration Farm near Sutherland. Another seven will be installed on research farms as weather permits. He said two farmers have paid for a station to be placed on their farms and a cooperative has ordered three stations. “The goal is, with cooperators, to have one in every county, he said. It costs about $12,000 each for the equipment and installation. Campbell Scientific of Logan, Utah, produced the original units and the new ones. “Twelve thousand dollars sounds like a lot of money, but these days when you consider the cost of farm equipment that’s not out of anybody’s reach, especially when you realize the payoff on it if you use it, he said. “People have to be trained to use it, so they know what it means for their yield and what it means for their soil. The payoff will be just as great for any piece of farm equipment.

Money available to support USDA to survey environmental projects farmers about 2013 planting intentions Over the next several weeks, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) will survey tens of thousands of growers about their 2013 planting intentions. The results of this survey will help all participants in the agriculture sector determine what to expect this growing season after a drought-hampered 2012 season. In addition to grain growers, NASS will also survey thousands of pork producers about their hog and pig inventories and spring farrowing intentions. “The information we collect from producers during
the first two weeks of March establishes a trend that we’re likely to see in the entire growing season,” said Bob Bass, NASS’ National Operations Division director. “This year, after a weatherplagued 2012 season, it’s more important than ever to understand planting intentions for this year.” Most survey participants should have received their questionnaires in the mail in late February and can now respond via NASS’s secure website or by filling out and mailing the forms back. Trained NASS interviewers will visit those who do not respond to answer any questions they may have and to help them fill out their
survey forms. “These surveys require a pretty quick turnaround so that the information is as current as possible,” added Bass. “Not only do we publish the Prospective Plantings and Quarterly Hogs and Pigs reports on March 28, but we also recognize that farmers have a very busy time ahead of them and we want to let them get back to the task at hand as soon as possible.” As with all of its surveys, NASS keeps all individual responses confidential. The published reports will include only national and state aggregate data, ensuring that no individual operations can be identified.

“Landowners have many conservation tools available and this program is designed to help generate even more practices to reduce erosion and protect water quality.” Proposals must address issues of nonpoint pollution control. Successful projects should be focused on sustaining and improving environmental quality or the natural resource base on which agriculture depends. Applications should also explain how the projects would enhance the quality of life for farmers, rural communities, and society as a whole. Proposals should clearly explain expected outcomes for the project and how they will assist in working toward these objectives, how project outcomes will be evaluated, and the impact of projects. “We are looking for projects that make a contribution to the greater good

High tunnel production workshop offered March 26 in Logan Current commercial fruit or vegetable growers and traditional farmers interested in diversifying can learn more about high tunnel production at a March 26 workshop at the Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, Harrison County office in Logan. “Like all farmers, fruit and vegetable growers attempt to get the greatest yields of high quality crops from their land,” said Linda Naeve, program co-
ordinator with Iowa State University Extension's Value Added Agriculture program. “This requires careful planning and using the right tools and strategies. Producing high value crops in high tunnels is one way growers can increase their production in a limited space.” High tunnels are inexpensive, simple, passive-solar greenhouses in which crops are grown directly in the
soil. They allow growers to extend the season and produce high yields of quality produce earlier than fieldgrown crops, thus commanding a higher price at market. Topics to be covered at the workshop include site and high tunnel selection, construction, soil management, irrigation, pest management, bed design and cropping systems and business plan
development. The workshop will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., with registration beginning at 8:30 a.m. Pre-registration is required by calling Joe Hannan at 515-993-4281 or emailing at jmhannan@iastate.edu. Fees for the workshop are $55/person or $90/couple, which includes a training manual/workbook, resource guide, lunch and refreshments.

Highlights of the USDA Agricultural Outlook Forum 2013 by David Fiala The February USDA Agricultural Outlook Forum 2013 (on February 21) was highlighted by a big focus on the 2012 drought. Emphasized were the many effects of the drought already known, along with some still anticipated, and then of course the big question in regard to the weather outlook. There is a concern of the residual effects into 2013, but the standard for the forum is to look at the year projecting trend line yields, assuming normal weather. This resulted in bearish USDA projections for 2013 new crop corn and soybean prices. The retail food price outlook for 2013 was generally expected to see a three percent to four percent rise as a historical residual effect of the higher commodity prices in 2012 and early 2013. Highlighted by Richard Volpe, economist with the USDA Economic Research Service, were the smaller retail food price effects of big commodity price volatility, including the addition of the big corn usage for ethanol over the past eight years. This is a topic that critics of corn used to produce ethanol have made, along with some myth media stories that retail food prices have soared or will soar. Interesting
to note, vegetable prices were down in 2012 as an aggregate and are not projected to be up in 2013. The USDA Programs emphasizing nutrition were part of the displays at the forum, so they received an economic boost as well as the food science health boost. The future of our new and bigger ag economy was one of the themes throughout the many forum sessions. Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack, Deputy Secretary Kathleen Merrigan and Chief Economist Joe Glauber started out the conference, with Tom Daschle as the distinguished guest speaker. Highlighted was the point that everyone in ag needs to work together for a better future. The ingenuity and technology advancements in U.S. Agriculture are having and will continue to have global effects to improve life. This remains a positive time for ag, even though we have seen this devastating drought year domestically. The U.S. role in world agriculture has never been more important. Secretary Vilsack did mention the sequestering as an item that likely will affect timely USDA vital items, but did not elaborate on his management of this potential and real challenge. U.S. Energy Information Administrator Adam Sieminski was the evening dinner
speaker on Thursday (February 21). It was a personable and open talk about the big changes in technology increasing U.S. natural gas and oil production to a point where exporting liquid natural gas is now possible. As far as the expansion to E85 and E15 blended gas, there did not appear to be much of an agenda, which was disappointing to the ag community. Jokingly-serious, there were a few questions about why gas prices are "so darn high" in the dinner crowd. Administrator Sieminski noted that our gas prices between $3 and $4 are good compared to Europe and Japan. The tone in the ag community at this time is that more should be done to lower gas prices, including making ethanol and biodiesel more accessible to the public, especially currently when it would effectively lower fuel prices domestically. The infrastructure to make that happen is extensive and did not appear to be a near term emphasis. Bryan Durkin, COO of the CME Group, David Baudler, Cargill AGHorizons president, and Scott H. Irwin, ag marketing Ph.D. at the University of Illinois, took on some market and futures industry hot topics consisting of a focus on the in-
tegrity of the markets and the science of the markets needed for them to work. The need for newly interpreted Dodd-Frank regulation that has been discussed in the industry did not hold water in regard to any evidence of harm that needs to be fixed. The MFGlobal Inc. and PFG mess was briefly brought up as an item that still needs to be properly addressed, but new regulation on smaller firms or increased capitol for the public, like farmers, would be a problem, not a solution. The Justice Department is 16 months into the MFGlobal Inc. investigation, and the industry still has hope justice will be done and the public will have their money returned. In regards to price protection for farmers, crop insurance is the main answer. There is comfort by the USDA and the public that insurance is doing the job. Incidentally, the new crop February average for crop revenue insurance to date for corn is $5.69 and $12.96 for beans. And still bad news for the western corn belt and western U.S., where the weather outlook for the spring calls for persistent drought. © 2008-2013 agNET. All rights reserved

MARCH 2013
USDA to simplify guaranteed farm loans by setting thresholds on interest rates The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced on March 1 an interim rule that sets thresholds on the interest rates charged by lenders on guaranteed farm ownership and operating loans. The changes will amend guidelines for interest rates and establish new policies that clearly set the maximum interest rate lenders may charge to borrowers. "By providing clear thresholds on interest rates for federally-guaranteed farm loans, USDA is ensuring greater certainty to producers, making compliance easier for our lenders and ensuring greater benefits for all farmers and ranchers," said Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack. "It is important that American agriculture continues to play a key role in driving economic growth and creating good-paying jobs across the American middle class. By
setting thresholds on interest rates, USDA will strengthen access to farm credit." USDA's Farm Service Agency (FSA) guaranteed loans reduce the risk of loss to lenders (banks, farm credit institutions and credit unions) by guaranteeing up to 95 percent of the loss of principal and interest on a loan. By reducing a lender's risk, borrowers benefit from a lower rate. The USDA said the interim rule on maximum interest rates for FSA-guaranteed loans will benefit lenders and producers alike. Lenders have expressed a desire to see greater clarity in FSA's interest rate policy. At the same time, FSA seeks greater consistency with industry standards and other government agencies that administer similar programs. The improvements in the new rule will make credit pricing procedures easier to follow
and improve compliance for lenders. At this time, FSA is also requesting additional comments on the interim policies in the rule, aiming to assure that the benchmark rates required of lenders do not prevent farmers and ranchers from obtaining guaranteed loans. USDA is seeking comments through June 3, 2013. The interim rule is part of USDA's work to expand credit opportunities for America's farmers and ranchers. In January, USDA announced a new microloan program to help small and family operations, and beginning and socially disadvantaged farmers secure loans under $35,000. The new microloan program is aimed at bolstering the progress of producers through their start-up years by providing needed resources and helping to increase equity so that farmers may eventually graduate

to commercial credit and expand their operations. The interest rate for microloans changes monthly and is currently 1.25 percent. While USDA continues to introduce new products that are more responsive to the credit needs of its diverse customer base, the Department continues to expand its traditional farms loans. In fact, since 2009 USDA has made a record amount of farm loans - more than 134,000 loans totaling nearly $18 billion. USDA has increased the number of loans to beginning farmers and ranchers from 11,000 loans in 2008 to 15,000 loans in 2011. More than 40 percent of USDA's farm loans now go to beginning farmers. In addition, USDA has increased its lending to socially-disadvantaged producers by nearly 50 percent since 2008.

by Gordon Wolf Looking at the week ahead, State Climatologist Harry Hillaker with the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship stated on Wednesday (March 6) the forecast is for colder weather than usual, a pattern that has persisted for the previous two weeks. He pointed out the cooler weather will be more of a benefit this year, following a drought, than the abovenormal temperatures experienced in March 2012. Temperatures in March 2012 were phenomenal, Hillaker commented in
March 2013
his weather summer for that month. Temperatures averaged 51.1 degrees – 15.2 degrees above normal, and it was the warmest March in 140 years of Iowa weather records. The warm temperatures occurred in the final 26 days of the month, and every day from March 10 through the end of the month averaged at least 10 degrees above normal. The record weather awoke vegetation from dormancy and sent farmers into the fields earlier than normal to prepare the ground for planting later on.
Looking ahead in March 2013, Hillaker stated, “Generally, we’re looking at a cool pattern continuing for a while, which for the most part is a pretty good thing. Less evaporation will occur and the perennial vegetation isn’t going to come out of dormancy any time soon, so whatever moisture is in the ground will stay there. This March looks to be quite a bit different from a year ago.” “Coming off a drought year, it’s good to keep things a bit on the cold side,” Hillaker stated. Coming out of the drought will
typically be a slow process – one rainfall event at a time, chipping away at the precipitation deficit from the last year and a half, said the state climatologist. Hillaker stated the upper level of the soil is reasonably moist right now but that the moisture is not much more than two feet below the surface. Moisture needs to get into the lower soil profit. “That needs to improve before the aquifiers recharge,” he stated. RAINFALL . . . Page 8B

Farm Bureau donations add to fund for children’s museum in Sioux City Will include interactive agricultural exhibit Woodbury County Farm Bureau members want to bring a taste of farm life to Sioux City and tri-state area urban school children, so county leaders joined the state grassroots farm organization, to help bring a $50,000 donation to the Children’s Museum of Siouxland, set to open the summer of 2014. The Children’s Museum of Siouxland is on track to become northwest Iowa’s premier education and tourism draw, which will provide an interactive, hands-on learning environment to children, families, and schools of the tri-state area. District Farm Bureau Director Doug Gronau, of rural Vail, presented the check to museum Executive Director Kari Kellen in late February in Sioux City. Farm Bureau members envision the museum as a great opportunity to further agricultural education for youth and educators in the tri-state region. “Many children in the area are unfamiliar with life
on the farm and do not know any farmers. This new children’s museum will bring the farm to them so they can see how farmers grow the crops, how animals eat the crops and how it all contributes to the food choices they make at the grocery store,” said Woodbury County Farm Bureau President, Greg Jochum. The Children’s Museum of Siouxland will feature an interactive agriculture exhibit that shows visitors of all ages about the food production cycle. The exhibit will include a replica farm, grocery store and café which will allow visitors to track the movement of food from the farm to their dinner table. Other museum exhibits will also be highly interactive, with hands-on displays and features. Woodbury County Farm Bureau initiated the partnership with the upstart museum with a $25,000 donation, which was matched by the Iowa Farm Bureau Federation. “Iowa Farm Bureau Federation is happy to partner with the Woodbury County Farm Bureau by making this donation to the Children’s Museum of Siouxland. The museum is a testament to the many ways Iowa Farm Bureau believes in supporting youth education
and leadership opportunities. We are excited by the potential this project has for children and families in the entire tri-state region,” said Gronau. The Children’s Museum of Siouxland will be located at 623 Pearl Street in Sioux City. It was started as a project through the Junior League of Sioux City and run by a group of dedicated volunteers. Today, the museum’s board is working closely with families, community members, and partners during the fundraising stage of development. For more information about the Children’s Museum of Siouxland, visit www.childrensmuseumofsiouxland.org or email Executive Director Kari Kellen, kkellen@childrensmuseumofsiouxland.org. The Children’s Museum of Siouxland is envisioned as a family-oriented, hands-on children’s museum with emphasis on providing educational value while fostering a child’s creativity and imagination. Targeting children ages 6 months through 10 years, the museum is committed to reaching out to all children and ensuring a safe and stimulating environment.

Practical Farmers, Iowa Learning Farms to co-host cover crop field days Five locations in western Iowa Practical Farmers of Iowa is joining with Iowa Learning Farms to have farmers showcase their experiences with cover crops this spring at eight field days across Iowa. County Soil and Water Conservation District Commissioners and Eastern Iowa Hay Producers Association are helping sponsor the spring field days that focus on the use and management of cover crops. A record 100,000 acres of cover crops were planted in Iowa in 2012. The increasingly popular conservation practice protects soil from wind and water erosion and captures nitrogen that can otherwise leach from the soil and pollute nearby waterways. All field days are free, open to the public and include lunch. Iowa cover crop field day schedule for western Iowa lo-

Blizzards and retirement A couple weeks ago, a major storm was supposed to come through Iowa and dump 12 inches of snow on us. I was excited on Monday when I saw the forecast; I’ve been wanting a snow day for ages! Then “Q” danced across Iowa leaving just a little snow in its wake, at least in our county. Though I did get one snow day out of it, I really wanted to be snowed in for a couple days. Now that March is upon us, my guess is that I’ll have to wait until next year to hope for another snow day. It’s not like we can get heavy rain or massive thunderstorm days in Iowa. Kids just pull on their boots and splash their way to school. We’ve had a few more calves on the farm, and I’ve been told they’re cute. The latest one was from the little kid’s heifer, that he hand-raised and bottlefed. Two years ago, he
showed her as a bottle calf and last year as a heifer in open class. The little kid called me using his dad’s cell phone in the barn and proudly proclaimed that Jenny had her baby, and that he had named the baby Sally. (Side note: Either the boy is going to take a bigger role in naming his children, or he’s going to be sick and tired of naming babies in 15 or so years when his children are born.) So the little kid decided to play with the baby for awhile, much to the cow’s delight. He and Sally hung out for awhile until my husband became concerned that the calf was bonding more with the kid than her mother, and kicked the little kid out of the barn for awhile. The little kid is still pretty excited about his new calf. He’ll probably have a pretty good herd going before he even graduates
high school. I’m sure he’s thinking ahead in his life too, because he asked me the other day how much our house costs. Of course, I didn’t answer the question, but I did ask him why he wondered. He started to say something about when we gave him the house to live in, whereupon I interrupted him and asked why he thought he should get the house and not the big kid. And, why he thought he should get it for free! He didn’t understand the question. I explained to him that his dad and I would need money to live when he was older, and that we couldn’t just give everything to him and his brother for free. His response, “But we’ll take care of you.” Cute, but I don’t think he is planning ahead and remembering that he would have a family to take care of as well.
THE
FARMER’S WIFE By Christy Welch Kids say the greatest things, and try to persuade their parents of all kinds of stuff. Last week he had to write a persuasive essay on any topic. He thinks kids should be able to have padlocks on their lockers, and gave three very good
reasons why kids should be able to keep their things safe and private. I don’t think the school will agree though. The big kid had to write a similar speech, using three points to support a statement. He said little brothers weren’t so bad. He said that they can be bribed to do your chores when needed. Perhaps more disturbing than the potential shaking down of his little brother is his last statement. He said only children have to care for their parents themselves when they are old and feeble. They don’t have anyone to help them out. On the other hand, the big kid will be able to “play with his parents” and send them off to his little brother so he can take care of us. Nice. Maybe the house will go to the little one. At least he said he’d take care of us.

Farm poll examines where, how farmers get their information Iowa farmers rely primarily on agribusinesses, Iowa State University Extension and Outreach and state agencies for their information needs, according to the 2012 Iowa Farm and Rural Life Poll. The annual poll surveyed 1,296 farmers about the information sources they rely on when making decisions that affect their farm operations, said J. Gordon Arbuckle Jr., a sociologist with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach. Arbuckle co-directs the annual Iowa Farm and Rural Life Poll with Paul Lasley, another ISU Extension and Outreach sociologist. “Farmers can choose from many sources to get the information they need to make decisions. We wanted to find out who they go to first for information on specific agricultural topics,” Arbuckle said. “We’ve asked similar questions in previous surveys, and results show that ISU Extension and Outreach continues to be among farmers’ ‘go to’ information sources. We also asked farmers to tell us how they prefer to receive ISU Extension information and educational programming that supports their farming and farm management decisions,” Arbuckle said. Farmers were asked to select the category of information provider that they would go to first when seeking information on crop production, nutrient management, pest and disease management, conservation, finances and marketing, Arbuckle explained. For each topic, farmers could choose fertilizer or agricultural chemical dealers, seed dealers, USDA/NRCS/SWCD service centers, private crop consultants, ISU Extension and Outreach, commodity associations and “other.” For crop production - including corn production, soybean production and seed selection - seed dealers were
the first choice for a plurality of farmers. A majority of farmers selected fertilizer or agricultural chemical dealers as their primary source of crop disease, insect and weed management information. Fertilizer or agricultural chemical dealers also were selected as the preferred provider of information on fertilizer application rates and nutrient management. USDA/NRCS/SWCD service centers were designated as the preferred resource for information for both conservation tillage and soil and water conservation in general. Responses for farm financial management and marketing showed that many farmers did not select any of the listed entities as their primary information source, with 57 percent selecting other. “Extension and Outreach ranked second or third in all categories, with the highest percentages being for pest and disease management, conservation, and farm financial management. Overall, 54 percent of farmers indicated that they would go to Extension first for at least one category of information. That said, chances are that much of the information farmers are receiving from other sources is based to some extent on Iowa State research,” Arbuckle said. “ISU Extension and Outreach delivers science-based agricultural information both directly to farmers and through key agricultural stakeholders who also have contact with farmers. Agribusinesses, crop consultants, commodity groups, state agencies and other ag information providers rely heavily on Iowa State research and extension information as they formulate their technical assistance recommendations for farmers,” Arbuckle said. “These partnerships help us make sure that farmers are able to base their decisions on current research. The
bottom line is that together we are able to place sciencebased information in the hands of more farmers across the state,” he added. Arbuckle said the Farm Poll results demonstrate the value of this approach. The 2012 Farm Poll also asked farmers how they preferred to receive information from ISU Extension and Outreach. For each of several topics they could choose from a list ranging from field days and workshops to webcasts and apps. Farmers were asked to check all that applied. “In general, results indicate that farmers are fairly diverse in their preferences. Traditional, in-person events such as field days and meetings were the most popular means of delivery for most types of information. However, substantial numbers of farmers expressed preference for electronic distribution of materials and programming through online videos, webcasts and downloaded publications. Very few, however, selected smartphone or tablet apps,” Arbuckle said. Conducted every year since its establishment in 1982, the Iowa Farm and Rural Life Poll is the longest-running survey of its kind in the nation. ISU Extension and Outreach, the Iowa Agriculture and Home Economics Experiment Station, the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship, and the Iowa Agricultural Statistics Service are all partners in the Farm Poll effort. The 2012 Iowa Farm and Rural Life Poll summary report (PM 3036) and previous Iowa Farm and Rural Life Poll summary and topical reports are available to download from the ISU Extension and Outreach Online Store, https://store.extension.iastate.edu/, and Extension Sociology, http://www.soc.iastate.edu/extension/farmpoll2012.html.

MARCH 2013
RAINFALL, from Page 1B “The soil has to be close to a saturation point before we get some deeper percolation. The time for that to happen is coming up. Unfortunately there is still frost in the ground, but I’m not sure how much. Hillaker said the good news is some pretty good chances of rain exist for the end of the week (week of March 3 through 9). He said the long range model shows the rainfall could be more than an inch of moisture, which is quite a bit for this time of the year. “What is especially good is the best odds for significant precipitation seem to be for the areas that needs rain the most – Nebraska, west central Iowa and northwest Iowa, said Hillaker. Hillaker estimated six to eight inches of frozen ground on average still exists and hoped that rainfall predicted for the weekend of March 8, 9 and 10 would help soften the frost. In his March 4 weather summary, Hillaker said the three mid-winter months (December through February) averaged 24.3 degrees or 2.2 degrees above normal and precipitation totaled 3.84 inches, half an inch above normal, as a statewide average. The temperature and precipitation placed the three months as the 41st warmest and 42nd wettest winter in 140 years and it was the seventh consecutive wetterthan-normal winter for Iowa. But Hillaker said the above-normal precipitation had very little effect on soil moisture. “I guess the positive is we can still get precipitation if we manage above normal amounts. Most of the winter precipitation would have fallen on frozen ground and very little went into the soil, he stated. The exception, he added, is the precipitation in the first half of December. “Some of the rainfall we received the first two to two and a half weeks in December would have gotten into the soil, Hillaker commented. “It wasn’t until December 20 that the soil froze. We had a little longer season than normal to get some moisture into the ground. Eastern Iowa received more of the early December precipitation than did northwest and west central Iowa.

Terraces in a western Iowa farm field hold back snow, while other parts of the field have been swept clean by the wind or the snow has melted in the sun. State Climatologist Harry Hillaker said a pattern of cooler temperatures is expected for the near future, which is good coming off a year of drought. Dormant vegetation won’t be using the moisture in the soil. Last year Iowa recorded the warmest March in 140 years of weather records and vegetation came out of dormancy early. NRCS offers science, conservation action to help landowners deal with drought by Ciji Taylor, NRCS public affairs specialist The USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service water and climate and other experts are predicting drought conditions in the West and places across the nation, marking a possible two-year drought in many states. Faced with limited water resources, farmers and ranchers are turning to the NRCS for expert advice and assistance to conserve water. “Our agency is the agency that takes scientific research and puts it into action for the benefit of landowners, producers and the American public,” said Dr. Wayne Honeycutt, NRCS deputy chief for science and technology. More water can’t simply be created, but conservation practices help soil improve water storage and use, which provides the best defense against drought, he added. Honeycutt is no stranger to farming and soil. After helping his dad on their Kentucky farm, he spent 24 years researching soils for the USDA’s Agricultural Research Service. Today, he ensures NRCS has the most up-to-date and scientifically based practices for getting conservation on the ground. Cover crops, no-tillage, crop residue management and crop rotation are a few conservation practices that can mitigate impacts of drought. By not disturbing the soil, no-till farming keeps soil cooler longer reducing evaporation. It also builds up organic matter increasing the ability to hold water.
“These practices help drought but achieve so much more than that,” said Honeycutt. “They help reduce greenhouse gases and help feed a growing population because they are building healthy soil and resilience to extreme weather.” The goal of many conservation programs offered by the NRCS is to improve the landowner’s soil health. Healthy soil is more resilient to erosion and better able to store water through extended drought periods – which lead to a more durable operation. “NRCS is putting science to work when it comes to conservation of our resources – be it soil, plants, animals, water, air, or energy,” said Honeycutt. With the help of financial and technical assistance from NRCS, many producers in the nation were able to weather last year’s drought and some even saw an increase in yields. The NRCS website features a story about a Texas farmer’s success using NRCS-enabled conservation practices. It can be found at http://blogs.usda.gov/. NRCS will present new drought information on a regular basis to keep producers informed about conservation practices to weather the drought. Individuals can log onto www.nrcs.usda.gov for Drought Mondays and explore ways to make their lands more resilient to extreme weather. Producers can also log onto Weathering Drought: http://go.usa.gov/22V4, a one-stop shop for NRCS drought data and program information.
by LuAnn Johansen, Sherry Glenn Iowa State University Extension and Outreach is committed to maintaining a sustainable 4-H youth development program that provides quality educational programs for Iowa youth — including camping experiences. However, there will be some changes in the camping experiences that the Iowa 4-H Program will offer at the Iowa 4-H Center this summer. “The original intent was to offer a full camp schedule for summer 2013 at the Iowa 4-H Center near Madrid,” said Cathann Kress, vice president for ISU Extension and Outreach. “However, we must limit the scope of programming we are able to offer at the center, due to staff changes and budget realities.” The 4-H camp program specialist has resigned to take another position, said LuAnn Johansen, assistant director for the Iowa 4-H program. Program staff are being hired to facilitate camp programs including archery, aquatics, climbing wall, creek walks and science. The traditional special interest residential and day camps offered to the general public will not be available this summer. All existing rental commitments at the Iowa 4-H Center are being honored. However, no additional non-4-H rentals are being secured by the Iowa 4-H Program. “We hope to add other 4-H camping experiences at the center this summer,” Johansen said. The ISU Extension and Outreach 4-H Youth Development management team is consulting with camping experts from across the national 4-H system to determine potential solutions to enhance and sustain Iowa 4-H camping opportunities into the future, Johansen said. “K-12 youth outreach is an important niche for Iowa State University and 4-H is our flagship program,” added Kress. “Focusing Extension and Outreach efforts on our core mission will help 4-H in Iowa become a stronger program that reaches more youth, is more efficient and effective, and is widely known as the premiere example of youth outreach in the nation.”

Iowa Department of Ag ends aflatoxin requirement for milk No positive tests since November The Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship is no longer requiring aflatoxin screening and testing of milk received in Iowa. The lifting of the requirement was for milk received beginning on March 1. The testing requirement was put in place on August 31, 2012, due to the drought conditions in Iowa last summer, which can produce aflatoxin in corn. During the six months in which the testing requirement was in place the ag department saw only four loads of milk test positive for aflatoxin and all four were destroyed. The last load to test positive was on November

7, 2012. As a result, approximately 88.46 million gallons of milk were tested since the last load to test positive for aflatoxin. “We appreciate the cooperation from milk processors and farmers throughout this process as we work with them to ensure the milk supply stays safe and free of aflatoxin,” said Northey said. The Department also conducted a state-wide corn sampling program last fall to determine the prevalence of aflatoxin. The Department also has received a waiver from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) that allows FDA to allow corn containing more than 20 ppb of aflatoxin to be blended with non-aflatoxin containing corn for animal feed for non-dairy animals. The FDA’s current blending waiver is in place until June 1, 2013.
The FDA has established guidelines for acceptable aflatoxin levels in corn based on its intended use. Corn containing aflatoxin in concentrations of greater than 20 ppb cannot be used for human consumption and cannot be used for feed for dairy animals or for immature livestock of others species. Corn containing aflatoxin at 100 ppb or less can be used in breeding cattle and swine and mature poultry. Corn with 200 ppb or less can be used with finishing swine greater than 100 lbs. in weight and corn with 300 ppb or less can be used in finishing beef cattle. More information about aflatoxin in corn can be found on the ISU Extension and Outreach “Dealing with Disasters” page at www.extension.iastate.edu/topic/recovering-disasters.

2013 Iowa farm custom rate survey follows recent trend The 2013 Iowa Farm Custom Rate Survey followed the recent trend of small, but consistent increases in rates each year. According to William Edwards, Iowa State University Extension and Outreach economist, most operations showed increases of three to five percent over the average rates in the 2012 survey. The values reported on the survey are the average of all the responses received for each category. The range of the highest and lowest responses received is also reported. These values are intended only as a guide. “There are many reasons why the rate charged in a par-
ticular situation should be above or below the average,” Edwards said. “These include the timeliness with which operations are performed, quality and special features of the machine, operator skill, size and shape of fields, number of acres contracted and the condition of the crop for harvesting. The availability of custom operators in a given area will also affect rates.” Several new operations and services were included in the 2013 survey, including vertical tillage, providing a seed tender, soybean combining with a draper head and mowing lawns.
The Ag Decision Maker offers a Decision Tool to help custom operators and other farmers estimate their own costs for specific machinery operations. The Machinery Cost Calculator can be found under Crops, then Machinery in the Ag Decision Maker table of contents. The 2013 Iowa Farm Custom Rate Survey can be downloaded from the Extension Online Store, https://store.extension.iastate.edu, or the Ag Decision Maker website, www.extension.iastate.edu/agdm/, as Information File A3-10, Iowa Farm Custom Rate Survey. Search underway for 2013 “Farm Mom of the Year” Chance to win up to $10,000 Monsanto’s search for America’s Farmers Mom of the Year is back for a fourth year to acknowledge the contributions of more than a million female farm operators in the United States. Anyone can nominate their favorite farm mom by visiting AmericasFarmers.com before April 23 and submitting a brief essay explaining how she contributes to her family, farm, community and agriculture. One regional winner will be selected by a panel of
judges from American Agri-Women and Monsanto for each of the contest’s five regions. Profiles of the regional winners will be posted to AmericasFarmers.com, where online voting will determine the national winner, to be announced on Mother’s Day. Each regional winner will receive a $5,000 cash prize from Monsanto; the national winner will receive an additional $5,000 cash prize. Last year the America’s Farmers Mom of the Year contest received more than 900 nominations from 45 states. From this vast pool of candidates, the judges selected five regional winners as diverse as their farming operations. Online voting on AmericasFarmers.com selected Debbie Lyons-Blythe, a rancher from White City, Kansas, as the national 2012 America’s Farmers Mom of the Year

MARCH 2013
ICA kicks off 2013 bull sales week Sales March 18 in Bloomfield, March 22 in Dunlap The Iowa Cattlemen’s Association (ICA) will host its first two performance-selected bull sales of the season on Monday, March 18, at the Bloomfield Livestock Auction Market in Bloomfield, and Friday, March 22 at the Dunlap Livestock Auction in Dunlap. Both sales begin at 6:30 p.m. “With the U.S. cattle industry reporting its lowest cattle inventory since 1952, the time is right to select a bull that will maximize your investment in the cow-calf segment,” said Kellie Carolan, ICA seedstock manager. “The bulls consigned for these sales have the genetic potential to add pounds to your calf crop and dollars to your bottom line.” The sales feature bulls that have met the standards of ICA’s Bull Evaluation Program, indicating they will provide genetics with high economic value to farmers with either commercial cow-calf or seedstock production. “Breeders have consigned an excellent set of bulls that carry breed-leading pedigrees and outstanding EPDs (expected progeny differences),” said Carolan, who oversees the evaluation program. All bulls were tested from October 29, 2012, to February 18, 2013, at Van Meter Feedyard near Guthrie Center. The sale bulls represent the top 75 percent of the group tested, and were selected based on carcass, growth and reproductive merit. At both sales, “buyers will find high performance bulls developed on a higher roughage ration this year,” Carolan stated. “The offerings at these sales had an average gain of more than 3.8 pounds per day on-test, plus many excel in calving ease and carcass traits.” Bloomfield sale preview Three breeds are represented in the 27 yearling bulls that will be sold in Bloomfield. They include 21 Angus, five Simmental and one Simmental Composite. In addition, eight fallborn bulls that will average 18-months of age at sale time, will be offered. These bulls were developed at the Kirkwood Community College test station. Breeders of the highest-gaining bull from each breed that qualified for the Bloomfield sale will be honored prior to the sale by ICA and Zoetis Animal Health. Those to be honored are Joe Mather, of State Center, who consigned Lot 32, an Angus bull sired by “Hoover Dam” which gained 4.40 pounds per day. Also, hitting a top mark was a Simmental bull, Lot 44, raised by Bill Wolfe, of Prole. This February son of “Mr NLC Upgrade U8676” gained 3.88 pounds per day. In the Sim-
mental Composite division, James Hogan, of Monticello, consigned the top performing bull, Lot 46. This February son of “GW Lucky Ace 076TS” gained 3.75 pounds per day on the 112-day test. Dunlap sale preview Five breeds are represented in the bulls that will be sold in Dunlap. The 58 yearling bulls include 29 Angus, 14 Simmental, 10 Charolais, three Simmental Composite, and two Hereford. Again, breeders of the highest-gaining bull from each breed will be honored by ICA and Zoetis Animal Health. Those to be honored are: Larry Bridgewater, Walker, who consigned Lot 108, an Angus bull sired by “O’Neills Bando Boy” which gained 4.71 pounds per day. Hitting the top mark for Simmentals tested is Lot 165, raised by Craig Utesch, of Correctionville. This son of “SVF/NJS Mo Better M217” gained 5.2 pounds per day. The top Charolais bull, Lot 153, came from Bill Zimmerman, Foley, Minnesota. His average daily gain was 4.11 pounds, and he is the son of “One Penny Xerox 0101.” In the Simmental Composite division, James Hogan, Monticello, consigned the top performing bull, Lot 177. This son of “GW Lucky Ace 076TS” gained 3.75 pounds per day on the 112-day test. And Eric and Matt Tiernan, Stuart, had the top performing Hereford bull in the group. Their Lot 158 son of “MSU TCF Revolution 4R” gained 3.84 pounds per day. The ICA Bull Evaluation Program, which has been in place since 1985, has two basic objectives: 1) to evaluate highquality bulls in a common environment to benefit seedstock producers and; 2) to identify and merchandise a select group of bulls, which excel in traits that have a high economic value. To accomplish the second objective, each bull must undergo a rigid evaluation process. “First, the bulls are placed on-test to evaluate their growth potential. Once the bulls finish the testing period, they undergo an ultrasound exam to gather carcass merit information as it relates to rib eye area size, amount of back fat, and the amount of intramuscular fat,” said Carolan. One other sale date has been scheduled for bulls that have been tested through the ICA evaluation program. It will be on May 3 at the Tama Livestock Auction in Tama. A sale of performance-tested open heifers will also be held on that date. For more information about the ICA Bull Evaluation Program or to receive a sale catalog, contact the ICA office at 515-296-2266. Individuals may also view the sales catalog and other bull and heifer test information on the ICA website at www.iacattlemen.org.
Bull buyers could win credit certificates Cattle producers who buy their herd bulls from the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association Bull Evaluation Program (BEP) have an opportunity to win $500 credit on the cost of a bull. As a thank you for purchasing through the ICA program, a drawing will be conducted at each BEP sale this spring for credit certificates. When a buyer purchases an animal, the buyer number goes into a drawing for either a $500 or a $200 certificate toward the purchase at the sale or at another ICA sale this year or next. Winners will be drawn at the sales in Bloomfield on March 18 and in Dunlap on March 22. “This is one way to say ‘thank you’ to all the folks using the ICA evaluation program to select their herd sires,” said Kellie Carolan, ICA seedstock manager.
Bull selection clinics will help in decision process Cattle producers looking for their new herd bull at the upcoming Iowa Cattlemen’s Association bull sales can attend a selection clinic before the sales to learn about using information from the catalogs to make a good selection. “Sorting through performance measures and Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs) doesn’t have to be a chore or a mystery,” said Denise Schwab, Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Beef Program Specialist. ISU’s Iowa Beef Center (IBC) staff will host bull selection clinics prior to the bull sales at Bloomfield on March 18, and Dunlap on March 22. The clinics will start at 4:30 p.m. at both locations. IBC staff will break down the process of bull selection and assist those attending with interpreting the EPD numbers in the catalog. “We can help evaluate your cow herd and determine the economically relevant traits that you want to emphasize.” Schwab stated. Time will be given to visually appraise the bulls.
