Iowa dairy entrepreneur develops novel marketing system
by Emma Struve To overcome the varied and complex economic challenges facing independent dairy operations, a Buffalo Center businessman and farmer has initiated an innovative marketing strategy. Bruce Meinders robotically collects milk from the cows on his farm, processes it through his onfarm, federally-licensed dairy, and is planning to deliver products including milk, cream and butter to Iowa consumers by way of specially designed and manufactured vending machines in addition to local groceries. “By taking the product from alfalfa to the grocery, the goal is being more consistently profitable,” Meinders remarked. Meinders started rearing Holstein bottle calves more than three years ago. “At the time it was good money and Holsteins are a nice animal to work with,” he stated. “It’s too bad they aren’t a little more durable; they can really be challenged by bad weather, for example.” The idea to begin milking the heifers gradually emerged and he considered purchasing a robot to do the work. Meinders, along with wife Stacie,
three-year-old daughter Ava and new son Ben all reside on the farm where the dairy is located. The Astronaut robot milking system by Lely, a Netherlands-based company, allows the cow to decide when she would like to be milked, Meinders explained. “The cows are loose housed so they come and go to the robot as they please. At night it’s really busy,” he elaborated. The average is 3.2 milkings per day but some cows will go up to six times. Each cow wears a collar that contains a transponder. The transponder communicates with the robot to record at what time the cow is milked, how much milk is collected by quarter, and the weight of the animal. This data is used by the milking system to supply the cow with an appropriate amount of a pelleted feed while in the milking stall. This protein-rich feed supplements the bulky foragebased diet fed at the bunk, Meinders explained. He added that feed consistency is one of the key components to milk quality. His cows eat a typical bovine dairy diet based on pelleted feed, hay and silage. The transponder also communicates with the robot which animal is in the machine. The

The 60-head Holstein dairy boasts an on-farm federallylicensed and inspected creamery that bottles milk for local distribution. Photo courtesy of Stacie Meinders computer has stored each cow’s “teat coordinates” so that when the arm with the teat cups comes up to the udder they can be placed very quickly. “We don’t get a lot of large milkings – 40 or 45 pounds of milk at a time – like dairies that milk twice a day. We get maybe 20 to 25 pounds of milk, but we get more of them,” Meinders commented. Within the robot is a scale that has weight sensors at each corner. In addition to capturing the weight of the cow at each milking to assess health, the scale also tracks the movement of the animal while she is in the milking stall. The robotic arm with the milking equipment can then move with the cow. Each milk cup works indeContinued on Page 18

ISA and ISU publish updated soybean field guide The Iowa Soybean Association (ISA) and Iowa State University (ISU) have released a collaborative publication, the Soybean Field Guide, which is a revision and update of the popular Soybean Disease and Pest Management Field Guide. Daren Mueller, ISU Extension specialist and one of the guide’s authors, said the durable and weather-resistant publication has been expanded from 52 to 68 pages and now features five sections on production, integrated pest management (IPM), diseases, insects and disorders. It includes
several additional insects that impact soybean production, as well as disorders like hail damage and nutrient problems. David Wright, ISA director of contract research and strategic initiatives, stated, “Soybean diseases and insects are the farmers’ number one concern in profitable soybean production. This field guide has been designed to enable farmers’ easy identification of problem yield robbers, as well as providing valuable production information.”
Funding for printing and distribution of the guide was provided by the Iowa soybean checkoff and ISU Extension. Printed copies of the Soybean Field Guide can be obtained by contacting the Iowa Soybean Association at 800- 383-1423; they can also be ordered from the ISU Extension Distribution Store at www.extension.iastate.edu/store/ or by calling 515-294-5247. The guide can also be viewed online at www.iasoybeans.com/productionresearch/
2011 farmland rental rates increase sharply Current Iowa cash rent rates quickly responded to the fall 2010 increase in corn and soybean prices caused by tight grain supplies and increased demand worldwide, according to William Edwards, Iowa State University Extension economist. As those involved with the Iowa farmland rental market know, rental rates were pushed significantly higher by the favorable corn and soybean prices in 2007 and early 2008. That was followed by lower prices in late 2008 and 2009, which took much of the steam out of the land market. Cash rent for farmland in 2010 saw significant increases. Results of the 2011 cash rental rate survey for Iowa , conducted by Edwards and his staff, estimate that the average cash rent for corn and soybean land in the state for 2011 is $214 per acre, an increase of $30 per acre or 16 percent from a year earlier.
“This is the largest one-year increase since the statewide survey was started in 1994,” said Edwards. “Even more interesting was the range of typical rents reported.” The range represents the highest and lowest estimates for typical rents in each county submitted by survey respondents, not rents for individual farms. In most counties, the lower end of the range was about the same as in 2010, but the high end of the range was as much as $50 to $100 an acre above the previous year. Average rents were higher in all nine crop reporting districts, with increases ranging from $23 per acre (12 percent) in east central Iowa to $37 per acre (21 percent) in southwest Iowa. “Individual farm rents that were set before the September 1, 2010, termination deadline probably changed very little,” Edwards said. “Rents that were negotiated later likely reflected the higher corn and soybean prices being offered then.”
The intent of the Iowa State survey is to report typical rents in force, not the highest or lowest values heard through informal sources. Rental values were estimated by asking more than 3,000 people familiar with the land market what they thought were typical rates in their county for high, medium and low quality row crop land, as well as for oats, hay and pasture acres. The number of responses received this year was 1,567, an increase of 25 percent compared to last year. Of these, 33 percent came from farmers, 24 percent from landowners, 22 percent from professional farm managers, 14 percent from lenders and 7 percent from other professionals. The Cash Rental Rates for Iowa 2011 Survey is available online as a downloadable document from the Ag Decision Maker website, www.extension .iastate.edu/agdm/wholefarm/pdf/c2-10.pdf, and from the ISU Extension online store, www .extension.iastate.edu/Publications/FM1851.pdf.
FSA announces County Committee nomination period begins June 15 USDA’s Farm Service Agency (FSA) announced that the nomination period for this year’s County Committee election begins on June 15. John R Whitaker, State Executive Director for Iowa stated, “County Committees operate under official regulations for federal farm programs. Committee members apply their judgment, experience, and knowledge when making local decisions.” Individuals who serve on local FSA County Committee make decisions regarding producer’s appeals; commodity price support loans and payments; conservation programs; employing county executive directors; incentive, indemnity, and disaster payments for commodities; as well as for other farm disaster assistance. “The committee election process is designed to give all producers a better chance of having their opinions and ideas expressed in the community, throughout FSA and the nation. Energy grass growth test begins near Manning Denny Kasparbauer and son Randy of rural Manning are investing one acre of land between two terraces to experiment growing Giant Miscanthus grass. They want to learn if this 10foot tall Asian grass can be grown in west central Iowa soils and climate, and how it will yield. They are starting an experiment that will last two years and possibly much longer. Giant Miscanthus grass is a huge biomass producer in many parts of the world, producing from 10 to 20 tons of dry matter per acre after it is mature. This is twice as much as the native switchgrass, which has been the leading grass biomass grass producer to date. Miscanthus is a long term perennial but starts slowly, so it takes at least two years to reach maturity. The first year, there is no biomass harvest at all as the root systems are developing. The Kasparbauers hope to produce four tons per acre of dry grass at the end of 2012, and 10 tons at the end of 2013. In future years as the roots expand and become deeper, the Kasparbauers hope to reach 20 tons per acre. Smaller Illinois test plots have reached 24 tons per acre. This grass is a sterile hybrid that does not produce seed. It is planted by burying three inch rhizomes in the ground at two inches deep. The grass stems are surrounded by long leaves that drop each fall. Then the bamboos like stalks are harvested. The tall grass stalks can be utilized in two ways. First, they can be biomass fuel, similar to coal, and burned for electrical energy production. This is its common use in Europe. Second, it is possible to convert Miscanthus grasses to ethanol by cellulosic conversion. This process is being studied now with corn cobs at the Poet Biorefinery ethanol plant near Emmetsburg. Because Giant Miscanthus loses its leaves before fall harvest, that organic matter provides the protective cover plant residue for the fields to prevent erosion. That is very important, as farmers on sloping ground must maintain a given percentage of residue cover to meet their farm conservation plans. It is anticipated that this grass will be likely grown on sloping lands that
need perennial grass protection and are less that become invasive over time. Because seeds are favorable for row crops. sterile, only movement of the rhizomes can spread The Kasparbauers have divided their one-acre the plant. test site into three 30-foot wide strips, each 500 Randy Kasparbauer is a 2009 Iowa State feet long. The first strip has high plant density of University graduate in mechanical engineering. 24,000 rhizomes planted per acre. That is roughly He studied bioenergy methodology as an undersix inches apart in the 40-inch spaced rows. The graduate. He also currently works with John second strip has a medium density of 16,000 Deere Company in Des Moines. Denny rhizomes planted 12 inches apart. The final strip Kasparbauer lives on the farm and also manages has a low density of 8,000 rhizomes planted 18 a tiling business. inches apart. They will study how fast the plant sends out new rhizomes and fills in between plants and also between rows. They planted on May 18 into a row crop field that was soybeans in 2010. To plant the three-inch long stick-like rhizomes, they fashioned their own planter using an old tworow corn planter from the 1930s. While leaving the soil openers virtually the same, they took off the seed boxes and substituted four-inch PVC drop tubes. They then mounted a table around the tubes to hold the rhizomes, and a bench to seat two people. Finally they installed a packing wheel behind the tubes to pack the soil around the newly planted rhizomes. As the tractor moves through the field, the people riding the planter drop the rhizomes down the tubes. For low density rows, that was fairly easy. For the high density rows, they had to work like mad. They admit that this system was fine for one acre, but for larger plantings, a better system is needed. Commercial planters for rhizomes exist, of course, but for this test plot, this was adequate. Even at one acre, this experiment is the largest in size in the state of Iowa for biomass production of Giant Miscanthus. Iowa State University and the Southern Iowa Resource Conservation and Development Inc. have smaller test plots of many different varieties of Miscanthus, but no plot is more than 12 feet by 12 feet. There are no other test fields in northwest Iowa. Because of its form and height, Giant Miscanthus can produce twice as much biomass as Randy Kasparbauer sits behind one of the two native switchgrass. Giant Miscanthus grass has planting tubes on the old two row corn planter he been growing for 22 years in Denmark and has not converted to plant rhizomes for Giant Miscanthus spread beyond five feet from its original planting grass. Photo submitted site. This is important to avoid non-native plants

Farm emergencies and Scout training I’m sure when a person marries a doctor or a fireman, that person is well aware that plans can change quickly and dealing with emergencies will be part of the deal. Society pretty much expects that doctors, nurses and firemen should be on hand 24/7/365 to deal with lifethreatening situations. Therefore, even those who didn’t grow up in a house with someone in those professions know what is expected of them. I didn’t get that memo when I married a farmer. Sure, I was used to dad leaving in the middle of the night to tackle a fire when I was growing up. We had the occasional emergency call from a farmer who ran out of feed on a Sunday or holiday, or who had a breakdown during the middle of planting or harvest and needed a part. But no one gave me the handbook on how to be prepared for emergencies on the farm. On Monday night, we had one such emergency. Right after both kids came in, showered and were in the process of eating supper, my husband called needing the four-wheeler, which my son had driven up to the house. He said a group of cows had congregated and were
being awfully loud in the pasture and he needed to go investigate. So my oldest son changed back to his other clothes, and ran the fourwheeler down. About 15 minutes later, I received a very loud call from my son that they needed help. The only words I could make out were “silo and “four-wheeler, which caused me more than a bit of panic. I tried to get him to calm down, take a deep breath, and tell me slowly what was going on. I was already throwing on my shoes, telling the little boy to stay in the house, and walking down the hall and out the door to help. I next hear from my husband, who told me to drive down to the silo and find them. That’s all I could get out of him, other then it was an emergency and they were trying to save a calf. Now I knew we were dealing with a possible vet emergency instead of an ambulance emergency. Once I got to the silo, they were nowhere to be found, so I had to call again. I was instructed to look to the pasture in the west, find the fourwheeler and walk towards it. Then, I would find them. When I got to the fourwheeler, I found my
husband, son and a 300pound calf in a cement box culvert. The difficult part was they needed the four-wheeler to be backed up very closely to the creek so we could tie on the rope halter lead in an effort to help get the calf up and out of it. I got the vehicle backed up on one side, grabbed the lead, and did a couple quick ties. Then, I turned around and helped my son out of the culvert, which was about five and a half feet deep. While I still had a hold of the lead, I told my son to tie it off using a knot that wouldn’t come apart easily. My Star-ranked Scout did an awesome job of tying the rope off and hopped on the fourwheeler. With one hand on the rope, and one hand on the four-wheeler, my son slowly edged forward while my husband tried to push up the calf. That didn’t work. We untied the lead and my son drove to the other side of the creek in an effort to try to get the calf out the other way. He backed up with the back two tires in the creek, jumped off, and I threw the lead to him to tie it off again. Since there was some slack, I told him to use a knot that could be easily tightened when I let go.
THE
FARMER’S WIFE By Christy Welch He tied another knot that was able to take up the slack as soon as I let go to jump over to the other side of the creek. After the same procedure, we finally pulled out the calf that was more then a little ticked off that the rope halter was still on him. My husband and son still have bruises on their legs from where the calf kicked them. I was so proud of the way my son remained calm while tying his Boy Scout knots and running the four-wheeler to pull the calf out. I wish more boys could have the opportunity to be trained to be calm in emergency situations. This week, two of the
boys in our Troop took part in the National Youth Leadership Training at Little Sioux Scout Ranch. Three years ago, on June 11, 2008, a tornado ripped through the camp during the same training that occurred this week. Our Scout Council calls the training “Pohawk Pride. The boys were prepared when that tornado hit. They had taken part in emergency training earlier in the week and knew what to do, including immediately setting up a triage area. In just a few weeks, my youngest son will attend a Cub Scout camp at Little Sioux, which after being rebuilt is probably one of the safest camps in the United States to attend. Scout training definitely helped our family on the farm this week, and will continue to do so in the future. I hope that my oldest son will be able to attend Pohawk Pride in the future, which will provide him with even more emergency and leadership training. Luckily, we are prepared for emergencies like this on the farm. But someone at some point really should have given me the memo regarding them before I got married.

Optimism, concern and care key to dairy farming by Greg Forbes Today, the dairy industry faces numerous issues and concerns. Milk prices fall while feed costs and land prices rise, product quality is questioned at times and farmers face scrutiny for their manure use and disposal. All these issues lead to doubt in a dairy farmer’s mind at some point. But in order to persevere through tough times, optimism, and care for land and the industry, are important. “We’re very optimistic,” said Wayne Dykshorn, president of the Iowa State Dairy Association. “We always have to look for the future.” Feed costs have caused a major profit problem and take up the majority of production costs. Milk prices have been at all time lows, but Dykshorn, who operates a dairy farm near Ireton with his sons, stays confident. He stated that after low prices in 2009 and 2010, milk prices have risen and dairies are now profitable again, even though expenses remain high. Dykshorn explained that milk sales alone do not result in profit, but with exports and cull cows milk cows that have dried out and are sold for slaughter - sales will lead to a profitable year in 2011. Even though rising feed costs is a major issue, Dykshorn’s concerns ran deeper than money. When asked the biggest issue facing dairy farmers, Dykshorn mentioned individuals wanting to have the sale of raw milk approved. “Food safety is a huge concern here,” Dykshorn said. Dykshorn has joined and led the fight against the movement strictly out of concern for the dairy farmer’s reputation. He has worked to get regulations passed to prevent sales of raw milk and protect farmers. Although not directly involved, Dykshorn has closely followed the development of the Foundation for the Future presented to Congress by The National Milk Producers Federation. The
AMAIZING ENERGY For Current Grain Bids
Christine Mondak, Iowa State University Extension dairy specialist, emphasized how no issue overshadows the importance of health in the cows. “Of course we have the issues that keep us up at night. But cow comfort is day-to-day the number one priority,” she stated. Dairy farming can be a trying profession. Prices and costs change all the time. But Dykshorn and Mondak emphasized care and concern for the industry and livestock comes first. Dykshorn even mentioned family living before feed costs and taxes when asked about production costs. Information about The Foundation for the Future can be found at www.futurefordairy.com.
Foundation for the Future is a package of proposed dairy policy programs that would dramatically improve the traditional approach to dairy policy and would foster a more economicallyviable and secure future for dairy producers. The Foundation for the Future includes risk management insurance, production increases by way of a Federal Milk Marketing Order Reform, which would aid those that market products, and control costs to keep expenditures as low as possible. Dykshorn hopes the Foundation for the Future will educate co-ops and dairies of improvements to be made and generate support for the Foundation.

She will be responsible for coordination and integration of the efforts of a very progressive and diverse team of staff professionals. In partnership with the association’s chief financial officer, she will ensure that the organization has the necessary administrative and reporting procedures in place to maintain and enhance the financial strength of the association. “We look forward to having Karey join the ISA staff as chief operating officer. Her breadth of experience will be a great addition to our staff as we take our organization to the next level,” said Kirk Leeds, ISA CEO. Claghorn stated, “It has been an incredible opportunity and an honor being Iowa’s Deputy Secretary of Agriculture for Secretary Bill Northey and to work with the entire team at the Department, but I am very excited about joining the ISA team. ISA has a very impressive staff and operates in a progressive way that I am anxious to join. This is a unique opportunity that will enable
me to expand my horizons and experiences and continue to serve Iowa’s farmers now and into the future.” Since 2006, Claghorn served as deputy secretary of agriculture, working closely with Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Bill Northey at the Iowa Department of Agriculture & Land Stewardship (IDALS). In addition to representing IDALS at local, state, national and international events, she has managed dayto-day operations and served as head of human resources. Twelve Iowa high school students chosen for trip to china Trip includes visits to historic sites, three-day attachment to a leading seed company, visits to local markets and farms, and tours of the cities Visiting farmers’ markets, exploring farming practices and interacting with other cultures are just some of the activities 12 Iowa high school students are looking forward to during their summer trip to China. The trip is part of a program designed to help Iowa youth gain the necessary international knowledge and skills to meet the demands of the new global economy. “Today’s youth increasingly have a need to understand the growing global economy, their place in it and how they can meet its needs,” said Kirk Leeds, CEO of the Iowa Soybean Association. “Students have a great opportunity to be exposed to new and different cultures and experiences during this trip, which will help equip them to analyze issues from a global perspective.” Twelve students from Iowa high schools were selected to take part in the Global Youth Excellence Program’s China Leadership Experience. The Global Youth Excellence Program is sponsored by Iowa State University Extension, Iowa Farm Bureau Federation and Iowa Soybean Association. Leaders from all three sponsors will accompany the students on the trip to China from July 31 to Aug. 9. “Giving Iowa high school students an opportunity to gain a better understanding of other cultures will pay great dividends as Iowa continues to play a critical role in the fast growing global food system,” said Jerry Miller, interim vice president of Iowa State University Extension. “The pool of applicants was impressive and I am confident we have selected a terrific group to represent Iowa agriculture and the state of Iowa.” A call for applications went out in March and ended April 29. Sixty-nine students applied for the opportunity and the twelve participants and two alternates were chosen by a group of four representatives of the sponsors. Eligible students are entering their sophomore and junior years in fall and each student had to complete an application and answer five essay questions. “The Iowa Farm Bureau Federation is pleased to be part of this important youth program. We are very hopeful that this group will greatly expand their knowledge of China and share what
they learn with others,” said Craig Lang, president of Iowa Farm Bureau Federation. Students selected for the trip: Carrie Adrian, a freshman from Knoxville, attends Knoxville High School and is active in band, choir, soccer, cross country, 4-H and her church youth group. She likes sharing what she has learned by making presentations to local communities and at the Iowa State Fair. She is excited to tell her stories to people when she returns. Adrian plays the tuba and is “not afraid to be noticed or to speak out and be heard – just like my tuba.” Nicholas Ahern, a freshman from Avoca, attends AHST Community High School and is an active Boy Scout and currently working on becoming an Eagle Scout. He has competed in the FCCLA at the national level and has also competed in the Iowa High School Battle of the Books at the state level. In addition, Ahern plays the saxophone and the piano, and is active in the community’s swim team. This trip will help him “develop the skills to interact with people of other cultures” and help fulfill his dream of becoming a foreign ambassador one day. Bradley Aronson, a freshman from Albert City, attends Sioux Central High School, is a member of the FFA and has received several awards including the Star Green Hand Award and the Ag Sales Proficiency Award for high fruit sales. Recently he has been selected to be part of the Iowa Youth Technology Team. Aronson enjoys volunteering and is currently raising funds to do community service work in New Orleans in the summer of 2012. In his free time he enjoys woodworking, welding, architectural designing and spending time with his dog. He attributes his communication and organizational skills to 4-H. Aronson hopes to visit the Chinese farmers' markets, learn how they market their produce and “bring back this knowledge to share with others.” Brandy Childers, a sophomore from Red Oak, attends Red Oak High School, is very involved in numerous school and community activities and is a secretary in the FCCLA. She also is an active volunteer in her community. She looks forward to sharing with her community what she will learn on this trip and “perhaps change any miscon-
ceptions people may have [of the Chinese culture].” Izak Christensen, a freshman from Osage, attends Osage High School, is an active 4-H member and serves as the vice president of the club. He also serves on the Mitchell County Council where he helps plan and supervise community activities. In addition to the many community service projects he is involved in, Christensen helps out in his family farm and looks forward to seeing the Chinese farming techniques and “what their farms actually look like with my own eyes.” Kelsey Dennis, a sophomore from Ames, attends Ames High School, where she participates in sports and is very involved in music activities. Dennis also is involved in SHEPH: Students Helping to Eliminate Poverty and Hunger; a schoolsponsored club at Ames High. She is passionate about working with children and teaching, and is currently a student teacher for a kindergarten class and a Hebrew teacher for a third grader. She hopes that this trip will give her a chance “to experience something [she is] not even capable of dreaming about.” Jared Gradeless, a sophomore from Melrose, attends Wayne Community High School and is currently the president of the Washington Willing Workers 4-H Club and involved in many activities in school. Gradeless “loves to help others by volunteering in the community” and helps out with the family farm when he is not in school. He believes that “one person can truly make a difference in this world”, and he aspires to be that person. Gradeless hopes to share information about his town and “how we farm and protect the environment,” with the Chinese students he will meet during the trip. Sarah Rethwisch, a sophomore from Fort Dodge, attends Fort Dodge Senior High. She is currently the president of her 4-H club and has taken a number of presentations to the State Fair. She was involved in the People to People Student Ambassador Program that aims to get to know other cultures and promote world peace and earned her tuition by selling fleece blankets and scarves. She hopes to learn and understand the Chinese people better and share this Continued on Page 23

Managing heat stress in cattle As temperatures heat up during the summer, cattle producers need to assess the heat stress that their cattle are under. Compared to other animals, cattle rely on respiration more than sweating to dissipate their heat load. Since cattle do not dissipate heat effectively they accumulate a heat load during the day and dissipate heat at night when it is cooler. During extreme weather conditions with insufficient environmental cooling at night, cattle will accumulate heat that they cannot disperse. Typically physiological factors such as hide color, weight and animal health predispose cattle to heat stress during the summer months. To minimize heat stress, cattle producers can start initiating measures now in their operation to assist cattle in managing periods of hot, humid weather.
Encouraged • Shift feeding to provide 70 percent of the day’s feed delivered after sundown. • Provide shade; a minimum of 20 square feet per head of shade is recommended. • Remove restrictions to air flow, such as wind breaks. • Provide mounds for cattle to make use of what little breeze may be available. • Grind light-colored bedding, such as straw or grass hay, into the pens. This will provide a cooler surface to rest on than the dark-colored pen surface. Emergency • When heavy, black-hided cattle show signs of severe heat stress such as continuous, open-mouthed panting, get these cattle to a shaded area, and cool these cattle with a hose, including their head and body. Either a stream of water or of large droplets which will penetrate through the hair coat to the skin is critical to provide evaporative cooling.
Critical • Make sure cattle have access to excess water capacity. This means getting extra water tanks into pens filled with fresh water. During the heat of the day (noon through sundown) cattle may increase their water demand to two gallons per 100 lbs of body weight. • Do not handle or process cattle past 9 a.m.
In addition to management practices, cattle producers can monitor forecasted heat stress events at http://www.ars.usda.gov/Main/ docs.htm?docid=20426. For more information on preventing heat stress in cattle go to http://vetmed.iastate.edu/ and type “heat stress cattle” in the search box.

He has toured with Brad Paisley, Brooks & Dunn, Martina McBride and ZZ Top. He has charted five number one hits, including “Watching You,” “These Are My People,” and “It’s America.” Atkins’ most recent single, “Take a Back Road,” released just four weeks ago, is already his fastest chart-climbing single ever. Ticket prices are $15 in advance and $25 at the gate. Tickets may be ordered online at eTix.com. All tickets are general admission and

Rodney Atkins is slated to take center stage for a live country music concert on Wednesday, August 31, at the 2011 Farm Progress Show in Decatur, Illinois. “We are excited to have Rodney Atkins performing at the 2011 Farm Progress Show to conclude the show’s second day,” stated Don Tourte, vice president, shows and events, at Farm Progress Companies, St. Charles, Illinois. “Rodney has established himself as one of country music’s biggest talents, and his performance marks another milestone for the show. The concert, which we are presenting in conjunction with Richland Community College, is sure to bring greater enthusiasm to the event and attract an even larger crowd this year.” The 58th annual Farm Progress Show will take place August 30, 31 and September 1 at its permanent biennial location in Decatur. The show is recognized as the nation’s largest outdoor farm show, featuring the most extensive state-of-the-art information and technology available for today’s agricultural

Iowa State animal scientist E85 sales in leads research on swine heat stress Iowa increase An Iowa State University animal scientist is leading a research project to understand the physiological impacts of heat stress on pigs. “The primary objectives are to evaluate why and how heat stress reduces swine productivity,” said Lance Baumgard, Iowa State associate professor and the Norman L. Jacobson Endowed Professor of Nutritional Physiology. “Heat stress is the costliest issue for American animal agriculture and is even more economically devastating in the developing world. If climate change continues as predicted, the negative effects of environmental heat stress on pig production will become more severe,” he said.
Having a clear understanding of the biological mechanisms responsible for reduced productivity during heat stress is needed to develop strategies to improve suboptimal production during the warm summer months, Baumgard added. Baumgard is heading a team of animal scientists from Iowa State, the University of Arizona, the University of Missouri and Virginia Tech University. They will study how heat affects swine in several areas including nutrition, reproduction, muscle biology and immunology. The $2.5 million research project is funded for five years by a grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA).
FSA reminds producers to file annual report of acreage by June 30 The Iowa Farm Service Agency (FSA) is reminding producers to submit their annual acreage report to their local FSA county office by June 30, 2011, to meet FSA program eligibility requirements. "Producers must file their reports accurately and timely for all crops and land uses, including prevented and failed acreage, to ensure they receive the maximum FSA program benefits possible," said John R. Whitaker, state executive director for the Iowa Farm Service Agency. Accurate acreage reports are necessary to determine and maintain eligibility for the following programs, but are not limited to: Direct and Counter-cyclical Program, Conservation Reserve Program (CRP), Price Support, and newer programs authorized in the 2008 Farm Bill. Programs include the Supplemental Revenue Assistance Payments Program (SURE), Average Crop Revenue Election Program (ACRE), Livestock Forage Disaster Program (LFP), Tree Assistance Program (TAP), and Emergency Assistance for Livestock, Honeybees, and Farm Raised Fish Program (ELAP). “Producers should be prepared to have planting dates on all crops including forage crops and those that are grazed when reporting crops to our offices,” said Whitaker. “With many of our new disaster crops, such as SURE, it has become crucial that producers report the correct year of seeding establishment for their different forage crops.” Acreage reports are considered timely filed when completed by the applicable final crop reporting deadline of June 30, 2011. Prevented
acreage must be reported within 15 calendar days after the final planting date. Failed acreage must be reported before the disposition of the crop. NAP crops that are harvested prior to June 30 must report by the earlier of June 30, 2011, or 15 calendar days before the onset of harvest or grazing. Producers should contact their county FSA office if they are uncertain about reporting deadlines. Late-filed provisions may be available to producers who are unable to meet the reporting deadline as required. Reports filed after the established deadline must meet certain requirements to be accepted and may be charged late fees. A minimum $46 fee per farm is assessed for late filed certifications. Producers should visit their county FSA office to complete acreage reporting. For questions on this or any FSA program, including specific crop reporting deadlines and planting dates, producers should contact their county FSA office. More information on FSA programs is at: www.fsa.usda.gov.

by more 27% The Iowa Renewable Fuels Association (IRFA) announced that E85 sales in Iowa increased by 27 percent during the first quarter of 2011 compared to the fourth quarter of 2010. According to the Iowa Department of Revenue, sales of E85 by Iowa retailers reached 2,645,038 gallons during the first three months of this year. Compared to the first quarter of 2010, E85 sales were up 64 percent in 2011. “Consumers have increasingly sought out E85 as an affordable, homegrown alternative with gasoline prices approaching $4 per gallon,” stated IRFA Executive Director Monte Shaw. “It was especially exciting to see E85 sales increase robustly even as the Iowa E85 retailer tax credit was cut by half on the first of January.” Since January 1, 2006, Iowa retailers have received a tax credit for each gallon of E85 sold. Under the 2006 law, the E85 tax credit was reduced from 20 cents per gallon to 10 cents per gallon on January 1, 2011. Iowa currently has 142 retail outlets offering E85. A list of all the E85 stations can be found at www.iowarfa.org/ethanol_e85 refueling.php.

Lean hog trade has been higher this week due to short covering and chart buying. The June 20-day is at 9070 which was Wednesday’s daily high; this area will serve as resistance again on Thursday which we are now challenging. Cash trade is expected to develop steady to $.50 higher on Thursday following the move higher in carcass value over the past two sessions. Rumors have surfaced this week which indicate that greater pork export demand is in the pipeline. It will be important to confirm additional shipments soon or the trade may give back most of yesterday’s premium. The weekly cold storage report indicated in movement of 407,000 pounds versus net out movement of 967,000 pounds at this time a year ago. This indicates still struggling retail demand.

CATTLE 06/09/11 Live cattle trade has been higher this week due to short covering. Cash trade was reported at $106 in the South and $108 in the North on Wednesday which was $1 to $2 higher versus last week. Attractive basis opportunities were noted for the strength along with short bought packers. Volume was large yesterday, so the bulk of the cash trade should be concluded for the week. The cutout finished lower yesterday with choice down $1.26 at $174.15 and select was down $.91 at $168.18. The high gas prices
and weaker stock market action this month should limit optimism above our chart resistance.

WHEAT 06/09/11
CORN 06/09/11
SOYBEANS 06/09/11
Wheat trade has been lower this week due to follow-through chart selling after the lower move last week. After three days of trade, the weekly net change is 25 lower on the July Chicago contract, KC is down 29, and Minneapolis is down 40. The crop report had old crop wheat carryover at 809 million bushels, down from the 842 million expected. But the new crop carryover was at 687 million versus the 659 million bushel number expected. Total winter wheat production was at 1.45 billion versus the expected 1.392 and total wheat production was at 2.058 billion versus the 2.009 billion average trade guess. The trade will question the numbers and expect them to come down next month. The world ending stocks were actually increased to 184.26 which should limit upside in wheat. With harvest pressure expected moving forward we may have already printed our highs in winter wheat this year. Spring wheat price action is still up for debate. The weekly progress report was mixed on Monday but has been supportive this week. Winter Wheat Heading was listed as 79% complete versus 83% last year and the 85% 5-year average. Winter wheat harvest was estimated at 10% complete versus 5% last year and the 6% 5-year average. Winter wheat conditions were reported at 34% good to excellent which was up 1% from last week. Poor to very poor ratings were unchanged at 44%. Spring wheat plantings were listed at 79% complete versus 97% last year and the 98% 5-year average. Spring wheat emergence came in at 57% versus 89% last year and the 92% 5-year average. The weekly sales were reported at 477,700 tons which was above expectations. Hedgers call with questions.
Corn trade has been higher early this week due to position squaring ahead of the USDA Supply and Demand report. After three days of trade, the weekly net change is 10 higher on the July contract and December is up 7. The USDA Supply and Demand report has been the feature this week. The old crop carryover was raised to 730 million versus the average trade guess of 706 million but new crop carryover was reduced to 695 versus the 771 million average trade guess and 900 million number last month. The new crop usage was reduced by 100 million tons in the feed category, so there was a usage decline. With prices double where they were last year, the question remains as to whether or not usage will slip more. The world balance sheet was reduced to 111.89 million tons versus 129.14 million last month. Beginning stocks were reduced 5 million tons and usage increased by 11 million. World production was only reduced by 1 million tons. On the weekly report, corn planting was reported at 94% complete which was down from 99% last year and the 98% 5-year average. After this week any further corn plantings will be rare. Emergence was listed at 79% versus 93% last year. Corn condition was estimated at 67% good to excellent which was down from 76% good to excellent at this time last year. The weekly sales were 320,300 tons of old crop and 29,900 tons of new which was below expectations. Hedgers call with questions.
Soybean trade was mixed in active trade early in the week, but we then had an upside chart breakout late in the week. After three days of trade, the weekly net change is 13 lower on July beans. Meal is $4.40 higher and oil is down 79 points. The acreage questions should support trade and not allow any huge break this month, but the market needs to now figure in a few million potential lost acres due to the Missouri River Flooding that is mostly yet to be seen over the next week to two weeks. Acreage discussions should be a close second to weather in regard to news that gives us movement this month. The USDA report was released on Thursday morning. The old crop soybean carryover was reported at 180 million bushels which was up from 170 million last month and the average trade guess of 176 million. The new crop carryover was reported at 190 million bushels which was up from 160 million in May. Old crop world ending stocks came in at 61.59 million which was down from 61.85 million in May. New crop world stocks were 64.53 million tons which was up from 63.81 million in May.On the weekly report, bean plantings were reported at 68% complete versus 83% last year and the 82% 5-year average. The USDA listed soybean emergence at 44% versus 63% last year and the 61% 5-year average. The weekly soybean sales were disappointing with only 120,500 tons of old crop and 100 tons of new. Meal sales came in at 60,500 tons of old and bean oil sales were 10,100 tons crop. Hedgers call with questions.

IOWA DAIRY ENTREPRENEUR DEVELOPS NOVEL MARKETING SYSTEM Continued from page 18 pendently so when a quarter of the udder has been milked completely, that cup will stop, which also contributes to a comfortable milking experience for the cow. Cows have to be trained to the machine, which Meinders stated takes the cows from about two weeks to a few months depending on the animals. “Some of them go right in,” he said, “some of them train so easily. Some you battle for 60 or 90 days or give up. They are not all alike.” CEO of Lely, Alexander van der Lely, shared on the company’s website the desire is to “build a system around the cow to make sure that cows like to be milked within a low-threshold system. He said, ‘Contrary to what seems to be the current market trend, we strongly believe this is the way forward in automating dairy farms in an animal friendly way’.” The Lely company has been designing and offering the robotic milking systems for two decades. The Astronaut milking robot Meinders uses also automatically senses milk quality. The milk from each cow is held in a large, glass reservoir jug until the milking is completed. If a problem is detected, the milk is discarded and the system is flushed. Without any problems, the system automatically flushes itself twice per day. Meinders has been milking with the Lely Astronaut for two years. During the first year of milking Meinders sold his calves but he has now added a feedlot and raises his own bottle calves. He also breeds and retains his own replacement heifers. Cow comfort, Meinders continued, is a priority on his farm. The building in which the cows are housed was originally constructed to contain more than four times the 60 head of Holstein cows it currently confines; the curtain sided barn is 200 feet long by 98 feet wide and ventilated by fans. To improve the cows’ leg comfort and longevity, they are housed on a deep bedding pack. The cows also have periodic access to a small pasture. While it is not sufficient in size for real nutritional benefit, Meinders remarked, it does offer the benefit of exercise. Another feature of Meinders’ dairy barn is an automatically-rotating stiff-bristled brush; the cows lean or press against it and it spins to relieve itches. Meinders broke ground on the creamery in August of 2010 and it was enclosed by Christmas of the same year. The federally inspected facility produces whole milk, 2%, 1%, skim milk, chocolate milk, butter and ice cream. Milk is bottled by the gallon and soon, half gallon. It has been in operation regularly for about two months. In planning how to lay out the necessary equipment in the creamery, Meinders visited more
than 10 on-farm creameries as well as the dairy processing department at South Dakota State University. One of Meinders two employees, Mike Dunn, is a recent dairy production and manufacturing graduate from the university. Dunn has been working with Meinders part time for six months and started full time in May. The other regular worker at Meinders Farm Fresh Dairy is Jay Mayland. Once milk is collected from the cow it travels through rigid stainless-steel tubing – a requirement for flushing and cleaning – to a chilled bulk tank. It enters the creamery just prior to being processed. The first step is cream separation. Depending on the product to be bottled, the proper amount of cream is added back into the skim fraction of the milk. Whole milk, for example, is 3.25 percent fat, while “whole milk” straight out of the cow is about 3.9 percent milk fat. The milk then travels to a vat pasteurizer where it is brought to a temperature of 145° F and held for 30 minutes. “It’s a slower, softer way to pasteurize the milk,” Meinders commented, as compared to flash pasteurization, which is for a shorter time but a higher temperature. It is then homogenized and cooled to 40° F and placed in a holding tank, ready for bottling. Preparation for bottling can take as long as three hours, processing the milk takes less than an hour, and bottling the milk takes about two hours. Following bottling are two to three additional hours of clean-up work, Meinders commented. “The first time we did it, mercy! We had plastic jugs flying everywhere,” he recalled, laughing. “It’s getting much smoother now.” The Meinders dairy products are then offered for sale at surrounding hometown grocery stores. The creamery on his farm has more capacity than what his cows have milk at this time. An opportunity exists to work with other independent producers. A stainless steel butter churn does not stand out in the creamery amidst all the other stainless steel equipment but it has its own interesting story, Meinders related. While visiting creameries, investigating how to arrange his own, Meinders came into contact with a gentleman he described as “an old Amish guy in Idaho who runs 80 cows.” The man had a butter churn the design of which Meinders really liked so he inquired about it. Meinders had to call and leave a message with another person as the Amish man did not have a phone but eventually they made contact and Meinders shared that he would like a churn with a 10 gallon capacity. Some weeks later a truck showed up at his Iowa farm and delivered

the hand-made, stainless-steel churn with a bill taped inside on which was written “Please Pay.” To review the Meinders Farm Fresh Dairy Facebook page, it is clear the butter produced by the churn is very popular! Meinders’, who has a bachelor’s degree in agriculture mechanization from Iowa State University and a master’s degree in agriculture economics, newest project has been the development of dairy vending machines. “It took three months just to find a company to work with me,” he said. Once the California vending machine company was on board with the idea, the partners went to work designing a machine that could store half-gallon size containers for milk, accept an order for dairy products on a touch screen, and then deliver the relatively delicate product packages by conveyor system to the customers, all in a vending machine approximately the same size and shape as a typical pop machine. The machine also had to have a reliable cooling system (and automatically shut down if the system failed), run on a single 110V outlet and be able to communicate inventory information wirelessly to Meinders’ computer. The final product was a year in development. As of writing this article, Meinders’ first machines were on a semi being shipped from California to Iowa for installation in towns that lack ready access to fresh dairy products. “In this area we have a lot of small towns that might have 150 to 250 or 300 people. In those little towns you can’t buy milk. There is no grocery store; there is no convenience store,” Meinders observed. He hopes the idea will appeal to consumers seeking a connection to the producers of their food, as well. After all, those that want to drive by and see the cows that produce the milk are able to do so. “I know I’ve got a good quality product,” Meinders stated. “I’m hoping I get enough customer loyalty out of it that (customers) get to the point where they may be 60 miles away stocking up on groceries but decide, ‘I’m not going to buy milk, I’ll get that on the way home because I need milk in that vending machine on days when I need milk in it’.” Meinders is still undecided where the best places to locate the machines will be. Stocking the machines will also be a bit of an experiment, Meinders speculated, since the generally accepted shelf life of fresh milk is 16 days. If towns are interested in a machine, he invited them to contact him at 515-341-2222.

New recycling program available for unusable plastic mini-bulk tanks Changes in EPA regulations mean many tanks will no longer be able to store pesticides Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Bill Northey highlighted a new recycling program for mini-bulk tanks that are used by many pesticide dealers to store chemicals before they are used on the farm. Changes by EPA to the Pesticide Container and Containment Rule that go into effect on August 16, 2011, will render many plastic pesticide minibulk containers unusable. The deadline to register for participation in the program is July 15, 2011. “We hope this program will allow dealers to remove unwanted, damaged or non-compliant mini-bulks from their inventory,” Northey said.
“Due to the strong support we have received for this program, the recycling fee per tank is only $15 and we have done our best to make it easy for businesses to participate.” The program is available to recycle stand-alone and/or caged pesticide mini-bulk tanks of 85 to 350 gallons capacity. Steel and fiberglass containers will not be accepted. To participate, owners of eligible mini-bulk container need to complete an inventory registration form and return the completed form to TRI-Rinse, the company operating the recycle program. Forms can be found at www.IowaAgriculture.gov. When completing the form be sure to include the chemical name (common name or trade name), chemical manufacturer, and tank size for each tank. The form and payment can then be mailed, emailed or faxed to TRI-Rinse. The directions on how to make the payment of $15 per tank can be found on the inventory registration form.
TRI-Rinse will then provide detailed instructions to dealers on how to prepare the tanks for recycling. Steps will include the removal of metal, cleaning tanks according to the manufacturer’s cleanout instructions, and removing caps, valves and vents. Collections will begin in late summer or early fall. TRI-Rinse, Inc. will either shred tanks on-site or transport them back to St. Louis, Missouri, for shredding. Questions about the recycling program can be directed to Mark Lohafer with the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship by calling 515-281-8506. The program is the result of a joint effort between the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship, the Agribusiness Association of Iowa, the Iowa Institute for Cooperatives, and Iowa State University Extension Pest Management and the Environment Program.
UI analyst says farm crisis still reverberates in Iowa’s latest census data Iowa’s farm crisis ended more than 20 years ago, but a University of Iowa (UI) analyst said last year’s census data shows its impact still rumbles through the state. Jeff Schott, director of the UI Institute of Public Affairs, said Iowa’s rural-to-urban population shift is even more pronounced in a deeper examination of the 2010 U.S. census data. “When you look back to 1980, the shift is dramatic, and it’s not slowing down,” said Schott, who analyzed the data for the Iowa League of Cities. “It shows how badly Iowa was clobbered economically in the 1980s and how long-lasting its affects have been. The impacts have lasted for a generation now.” As a result of the crisis, more and more of Iowa’s population live in cities. That number was 79 percent in 2010, up from the 74.6 percent who lived in incorporated cities in 1980, before the crisis began. Schott said the rural-to-urban trend is evident in almost every part of the state. In 76 of Iowa’s 99 counties, the percentage of residents living in cities increased in 2010 compared to 2000. Schott noted that the eight counties with a population of more than 50,000 people had a

combined overall population increase of 10.9 percent between 2000 and 2010. In contrast, population in the other 91 counties dropped by 1.8 percent. Of the 129 cities registering the largest population decline during the past decade, all but one were smaller than 1,000 residents. He said the longer-term perspective is even more striking. Since 1980, the population of the eight largest counties has increased by 22.5 percent, while the population of the other 91 counties has declined by 8.7 percent. In 2010, 49.7 percent of Iowa’s total population resided in the eight most populous counties, compared to 42.4 percent in 1980. Only six counties have gained population in every census since 1980: Dallas, Marion, Polk, Story and Warren, all in the Des Moines-Ames area, and Johnson, home to Iowa City and the University of Iowa. At the same time, 42 counties have lost population in every census, and 53 counties have shed 10 percent or more of their population in the past 30 years. Schott’s analysis found that between 2000 and 2010, the number of people living in cities with a population greater than 10,000 grew by 11 percent. The fastest growing cities in the group
were those with a population between 10,000 and 20,000, most of them in the booming Des Moines and Cedar Rapids-Iowa City areas, such as Waukee, Johnston and North Liberty. Cities in that population range grew by 46.7 percent during the decade. Central Iowa continues to emerge as the state’s dominant population center, as Polk County and its adjacent counties now make up 23.9 percent of the state’s population. In 1980, the region accounted for only 18.3 percent of the overall population. Schott said those numbers are important for policy makers as they plan for the future of rural Iowa. “Planning for population decline is a lot different than planning for growth,” he said. “It’s going to be a challenge for local governments to meet the challenges they have to face, especially as their population ages and there are fewer resources to pay for the services that will be needed.”

Rising feed costs impact dairy profits Producers also battle volatile milk prices by Greg Forbes The dairy industry is one of great importance to Iowa and the Midwest. But with rising gas prices and feed costs, profitability is more difficult to achieve. “Our dairy farmers are extremely efficient, but unfortunately we need them to be more efficient just to keep up,” said Larry Tranel, Iowa State University Extension dairy field specialist. Tranel, who is based in the Extension office in Dubuque County, voiced a concern about feed costs outweighing milk prices. The cost of feed
alone has risen from a previous level of 50 percent of the total production costs to around 65 percent. “Rising costs really make us question how sustainable dairy can be,” Tranel said. Tranel continued to express the importance of stable feed costs to the survival of dairy farms. If prices continue to grow, Tranel feels that dairy farms in Iowa may become more of a rarity. “More and more dairies continue to die,” Tranel said. “It’s a harsh reality but that’s the way it is.” Aside from rising costs, the instability of milk prices also leads to losses. Dr. Christine Mondak, Iowa State University Extension dairy specialist,
explained how the constant rise and fall of milk prices makes it difficult to predict production. “Milk prices are so volatile, leading to ups and downs. You can’t be guaranteed it will stay the same,” commented Mondak, who serves 23 counties in northwest and western Iowa. She stated that milk prices “do not provide much buffer” when comparing milk prices to feed costs. “Farmers,” Mondak said, “may see prices drop even lower.” She also explained that eventually, farmers may be paid below the necessary price for product.

Iowa cattle farmer sees potential in South Korean market
Garner cattle farmer Ed Greiman (right) meets Mr. Jae-Soo Kim, #1 Vice Minister at the Korea Ministry of Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries during the Iowa Trade Mission to South Korea/China. The South Korea leg of the trip took place the week of June 6 and included 41 Iowans representing state government, business and industry, and farmers. Photo submitted Garner cattle farmer Ed Greiman said his experience on Iowa’s South Korea/China Trade Mission the week of June 5 taught him that South Korean consumers have the very same concerns as U.S. consumers. “They are very concerned about food safety and food quality. That’s no different than the expectations of U.S. consumers,” Greiman said. “The South Korean market is phenomenal. I envisioned it as under-developed, but the country is full of young people who are well-educated and have good jobs. Walking around downtown Seoul is no different than walking around Chicago or New York City,” he stated. “These are people looking to add protein to their diets. We know they are looking for beef because it’s the Cadillac of meats,” Greiman said. He continued that South Korea just can’t provide that for their population, so the country will need to import beef. Greiman, who is president-elect of the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association, is also a board member of the Iowa Beef Industry Council, which is funding the trip. Greiman joined 40 other Iowans on the mission that includes government, business and industry, and farm representatives. Greiman only participated in the leg of the trip that visits South Korea.
In a meeting with the Mr. Jae-Soo Kim, the #1 Vice Minister from the Ministry of Food, Agriculture, Forestry & Fisheries, the Iowans talked about the pending Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with South Korea. That agreement has been on hold for nearly five years, and the Obama Administration is readying it to present to Congress. That trade agreement is critical to Iowa and the United States, said Iowa Secretary of Agriculture and Land Stewardship Bill Northey, who is also on the trip. Currently, for every $100 of U.S. beef sold, a tariff – or tax – of $40 must be paid to South Korea. If the FTA passes Congress, it will eventually eliminate that tariff. For Iowa alone, the impact of passing the bill will increase its sales to South Korea by $1 billion, Northey said. Other beef-producing countries are aggressively going after the market in South Korean because it has the 12th largest economy in the world. Besides passage of the FTA, Greiman stressed that Iowa cattle farmers need to remember they are producing food. He stated, “We’re not just selling cattle to a packer and that’s the end of it. Packers are just the middlemen that get our food to the U.S. consumer and the people in South Korea.”

TWELVE IOWA HIGH SCHOOL... Continued from page 9 knowledge through the Lion’s Club, 4-H club, school, churches and people within the community. Hannah Riensche, a sophomore from Jesup, attends Jesup High School. She has held and continues to hold several leadership appointments including president of the freshman class and is currently vice president of the sophomore class and the chapter vice president of the FFA. She contributes to the community through teaching Sunday school. The budding agriculturalist is “eager to learn more about the differences and similarities between agriculture in China and the U.S., and the ways we can work together.” Preston Schaaf, a freshman from Tabor, attends Fremont Mills High School where he serves on the student council and has been a class officer. He competes in high school policy debate at the national level, and will be attending a six-week debate camp in Atlanta in the summer. Schaaf is currently the secretary of the Riverside Rockets 4-H club, and has served as the reporter, historian and photographer and is involved in regular volunteer activities. Schccaaf also is one of the 16 students selected to serve on the 2011 Iowa Youth Technology Team. Having lived in the “relatively non-diverse Midwest,” he hopes to “break down the walls of our small community … and be able to share” these experiences with the others in his community through this “tremendous opportunity.” Mandy Thompson, a freshman from Pleasantville, attends Pleasantville High School. She has been a Girl Scout for the last eight years and has been volunteering at Toys for Tots the last five years. Thompson attributes her leadership development to agriculture classes and FFA, and continues to broaden her leadership skills by attending conferences. Involvement in school and community are very important to Thompson and she hopes to gain “global travel experience and relate to others with the same aspirations and commonalities” with this trip to China. Michael Tupper, a freshman from Ionia, attends New Hampton High School. He is involved in numerous activities including 4-H, FFA, student senate and church youth group. He believes that these activities have helped him become a “strong team player and a strong individual leader.” His achievements include winning the junior and intermediate swine showman, and he placed second in the northeast district livestock judging contest. Tupper hopes to “step out of [his] box and try to gain a new experience” to reach his “full potential of making an impact on the world” through this trip to China.
