Stephen Barnhart, an agronomist of Iowa State University Extension, said the early spring led to more rapid pasture growth that allowed an earlier start on grazing. However, the heat and dryness have left farmers scrambling to adapt. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Generally western Iowa has had more favorable rainfall than other parts of the state. However, as rainfall totals drop below crop needs and the hotter than normal temperatures persist, slow growth of the pastures and fields will force management adjustments,â&#x20AC;? Barnhart said. Sixth Annual Iowa Women in Ag Conference set for August 7 “Women Navigating the Future,” the sixth annual conference sponsored by Iowa Women in Ag (IWIA), is scheduled for August 7 at the FFA Enrichment Center in Ankeny. Women with any connection to agriculture are encouraged to take advantage of the opportunity to gather with other ag women, interact with an array of experts and share life experiences with one another. The one-day event will feature breakout sessions on topics ranging from beginning marketing and ag finance to estate/succession planning, as well as discussions about emerging technologies and social media.

Options will also include the opportunity to tour Pioneer Hi-Bred, or participation in sessions on leadership, a legislative update, food technologies and cover crops. HAY, from Page 1A He continued that while drought is a concern now, it is too early in the growing season to know the impact on hay demand, but states with worse conditions, such as Missouri, Arkansas, Illinois and Indiana may rely on Iowa hay. Even eastern Iowa may look towards the western half of the state for hay. At the moment, the warm, dry weather has not affected the price of hay. In mid- to late June, hay prices at auction in northwest Iowa on average were $10 to $15 higher than in May and $30 to $50 higher than a year ago, according to Barnhart. However, the dry weather has slowed production for the time being. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It (production) started out to have a banner year, but, the spring cold spell and intermittent hot and dry

conditions are bringing it back towards average,â&#x20AC;? Barnhart explained. â&#x20AC;&#x153;But if the weather conditions are not favorable from here on, the season-long outlook would be slightly below average.â&#x20AC;? The early spring potentially allowed an extra cutting of â&#x20AC;&#x153;beef cow qualityâ&#x20AC;? hay in September, but Barnhart advised farmers to wait if the opportunity for a mid-September cut arises. â&#x20AC;&#x153;If â&#x20AC;&#x201C; because of a few weeks earlier start â&#x20AC;&#x201C; the â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;beef cow qualityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; hay producers started harvesting in May this year, they may have enough forage ready to be cutting their fourth harvest of the season in mid to late September, right in the middle of the recommended â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;no-cut, summer rest periodâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;,â&#x20AC;? Barnhart said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;But I would encourage them to hold off on their fourth cutting of the year until late fall.â&#x20AC;? He continued that â&#x20AC;&#x153;dairy cow qualityâ&#x20AC;? hay producers would limit cuts to the traditional three cuts and not

try for a fourth, late fall cut. Regardless of unusually dry or warm weather, Barnhart said that regular management is key to successful production. He offered a few tips for pastures for quality livestock management. â&#x20AC;&#x153;If summer growth is dwindling, some livestock management steps would include early weaning of calves, slow the grazing rotation to allow paddocks to recover, feeding hay or other supplements on pasture and reducing the number of livestock per acre,â&#x20AC;? Barnhart said. He added that if growing stops, animals should be pulled off of the pasture and fed supplemental forage. As far as pasture rotation, Barnhart said having two to three plots was important to decrease the grazing burden on pastures. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Two is always better than one,â&#x20AC;? Barnhart explained. â&#x20AC;&#x153;A significant amount of rest and recovery time can be gained by having five or six pastures or paddocks.â&#x20AC;?

Local cattle producers shine at ICA Carcass Challenge by Greg Forbes Three western Iowa beef producers were named winners in the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association (ICA) inaugural Carcass Challenge. Doug Steele, of Steele Land and Livestock of Anita, claimed top honors in the competition. Witt Cattle Company, Arcadia, took third place and Dunlap Livestock Auction placed seventh. Kellie Carolan, ICA seedstock manager, said the event was constructed by the Young Cattlemen’s leadership group. “We wanted to challenge them to come up with a project they wanted to do to become a part of the ICA,” Carolan explained. Steele, who has run a pure-bred angus operation near Anita since 1991 and is on the ICA Board of Directors, said he submitted his steer to help “push the project along.” Merle and Diane Witt, of Witt Cattle Company, founded by George Witt in 1948, submitted their

third-place winner to help the youth involved in the ICA as well as help raise money for the association. “I wanted to support them (youth) as well as get the steer carcass challenge off to a good start,” Witt said. Fellow board members as well as cattle producers throughout the area supported the challenge by submitting 50 carcasses to be judged. Carolan said the Young Cattlemen’s leadership group members recruited donors with ads in cattlemen’s magazines, notified members of the ICA and sent out emails. Because Witt and Steele serve on the ICA board, they each selected a steer that would proudly represent their farms. “I went out and picked a big, stout steer with a tremendous ability to grow,” Steele said of his steer that registered an 18-square inch ribeye. Witt said he selected his simmental angus cross calf in April of 2011 and began to pre-

pare it for the competition. Within a year and ten days, the calf weighed 1,475 pounds. At the challenge, it registered a ribeye of 17 square inches.

Carcasses were judged based on Iowa State University’s Retail Value per Days on Feed scale. Essentially, the scale determined the cattle with the highest quality meat that

July off to a hot, dry start Crops suffer but remain in good shape compared to national standards by Greg Forbes Recent hot and dry temperatures have halted relief brought by late-June rainfalls. Field agronomists throughout western Iowa stated that while crops have taken a hit in early July, timely rainfall can once again salvage this year’s yield. “We do definitely need some moisture,” said Rich Pope, a field agronomist from Iowa State University stationed in Harrison County. “This crop has a lot of potential but we’re going to need some rain.” The first week in July brought triple digit temperatures and little rain throughout the entire state of Iowa. In previous weeks, some fields throughout western Iowa saw as much as two inches of rain per rainfall which may have braced the crops for July’s relentless conditions. “Looking at the corn, I think it’s fairly good,” said Mark Licht, an Iowa State University field agronomist in Boone County. “The corn hasn’t rolled or showed stress this week, which means we have some soil moisture.” Aaron Saeugling, Iowa State University Extension Field Agronomist stationed in East Pottawatomie County, said most of the corn crops that were damaged in the heat of early July were in the pollination stage. The heat dried out silk and greatly hampered pollination. “Anything that was trying to pollinate in last weeks heat took a hit. We did have cases of kernel abortion and some corn has rolled,” Saeugling explained. Paul Kassel, the Iowa State University Extension field agronomist stationed in Clay County, added that with today’s hybrid corn crops, pollination is less affected by excessive heat and dry conditions. “Sure the heat has affected pollination, but with the new technology and crops, pollination is usually a good process anymore,” Kassel said. Aside from the heat, a major hindrance in crop production this year has been weeds. According to Saeugling, herbicidal treatments cannot take effect without moisture and since

rain has been sparse lately, weeds are growing past the required treatment height. “We really need to be out there spraying when weeds are at two to four inches but it’s really difficult to get good weed control when we have to spray under hot and dry conditions,” Saeugling said. Pope added that weed treatment will speak on the success of management for the 2013 growing season. He said that while weeds have not caused widespread damage, some have proven to be Round-up resistant. If weeds continue to resist traditional weed treatments, crop growers will have to adopt alternative methods. Kassel said spidermites have also added to the problems farmers have or will face this growing season. Spidermites thrive in warm and dry conditions, and while farmers specifically in the Clay County area have not reported major mite problems yet, Kassel advised growers to keep a close eye on fields. “Farmers with spidermites will see a white, crusty and dirty look to leaves, particularly to the lower leaves,” Kassel explained. “They can be treated but farmers need to keep an eye out for them. They are very difficult to see.” Although crops have potentially taken a hit in July, western Iowa’s crops appear to be in better shape compared to the rest of the Midwest. “The further I get away from central Iowa going east, the worse things look,” Licht said. Licht continued that the neighboring states of Missouri and Illinois, as well as Indiana and Ohio, may rely on Iowa corn to keep the market steady. “Right now, corn is above $7 per bushel and soybeans are at $15. Recent numbers at the Chicago Board of Trade showed the national crop as a whole isn’t well,” Licht said. “It appears that Iowa and Minnesota are going to provide a lot of productivity in corn and soybeans to meet the national demand.” “Generally speaking, we are sitting in good shape relative to the rest of Iowa as well as states further east like Illinois and Indiana,” Pope said. “I guess it’s a guarded positive.”

Crop reporting and other upcoming 2012 FSA deadlines The Iowa State Farm Service Agency (FSA) Office, reminded producers of the following acreage reporting requirements and other upcoming deadlines. July 15, 2012: Final date to report spring seeded crops, CRP and NAP acreages. A transition to new reporting deadlines allows producers who have not already done so, to file an FSA-578, Report of Acreage, certification for their farm by July 15 for crops and land uses. Producers should also report crop losses resulting from weather-related disaster events within 15 days of the disaster or when the loss first becomes apparent, this includes crops covered by crop insurance, the Noninsured Crop Disaster Assistance Program (NAP) and failed crops without insurance coverage. Failed acreage should be reported prior to crop disposition. August 1, 2012: Final date for nominations for the FSA County Committee election. This is also the final date to request fiscal year 2012 farm combination and/or farm division for a farm with base acres. September 1, 2012: Final application closing date for 2013 Noninsured Crop Disaster Assistance Program (NAP) coverage on aquaculture, canola, Christmas trees, nursery crops, turf grass sod, and all small grain crops, except oats. FSA program eligibility may require NAP coverage on all non-insurable crops and crop insurance on insurable crops. December 15, 2012: Final date to report perennial forage, fall wheat, and other fall-seeded small grains for the 2013 crop year. Producers are also reminded of on-going programs, which include Direct and Guaranteed Farm Operating and Farm Ownership Loans, Rural Youth Loans, Farm Storage Facility Loans, and Continuous Conservation Reserve Program. free of cost and open to any licensed driver who wanted to join the 37.5 mile ride. The ride began at noon, and ended with a free meal for drivers at the Charter Oak Park.

Iowa Secretary of Ag visits Denison, comments on crops by Gordon Wolf When visiting with farmers throughout the state, Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Bill Northey has found the predominant topic of concern is something no one can do anything about - the weather. High temperatures and inadequate rainfall in cropproducing states leading to the speculation of diminished yields has caused prices to increase on the board of trade. Northey, who visited Denison Livestock Auction on Saturday, said Iowa crops look better than in other areas of the nation. He said he spoke with an individual who reported that some Indiana corn was only two feet tall. Other corn plants that were six feet tall and have tassels don't have ears.

Northey said Iowa can get a good corn crop if timely rains are received. At stake is the price of corn, which affects other prices. Northey said $5 corn compared to $8 corn will affect the cattle industry and how much it costs to finish out cattle. Northey stated pastures and hay ground have also taken a hit from the hot, dry weather. Northey spoke to a farmer who had a phenomenal first hay crop and an even better second crop, due to the early spring. Then the hot, dry weather began and the farmer is waiting for the third cutting to grow. It is difficult, however, to make a statement about crop conditions that would apply to every farmer and

The crops are in great shape, the farmer reported to Northey. Northey also commented on the Farm Bill while at Denison Livestock Auction. "I liked the Senate version", he stated. The House version has differences, he said. Some House members want to increase target prices for cotton and rice farmers in the South and cut programs a little more. "Certainly a main focus is to keep moving forward before the current Farm Bill expires, " he stated.

A taste of Iowa at the Capitol’s front door Des Moines Farmers Market is like front porch America by Greg Forbes Every Saturday from May to October in the shadow of the Capitol Building in Des Moines, more than 250 tents offer a chance for Iowans to freshen up their taste buds. The Des Moines Farmers Market on downtown Court Avenue features producers from 51 counties throughout Iowa, as well as growers from Missouri and Nebraska. Overflowing baskets of tomatoes, pep-

pers, onions, potatoes and more clutter the tables of professional and leisurely vegetable growers while woodworkers display hand-fashioned bowls and benches. This unique spectacle allows shoppers to buy natural, Iowa made products and escape the confines of the typical supermarket produce aisle. No two stands are alike. Market-goers can sample locally grown honey at one tent, then venture next door for farmraised buffalo jerky, followed by handmade jams and jellies. Several wineries offer bottles of wine made from fruits and grapes grown in the expansive backyards of the Iowa countryside. Vendors don’t expect shoppers to

blindly buy a large quantity of a product, so they offer small samples of their most popular items. And most don’t seem to mind when people try more than one product. Local restaurants and food carts fill the air with the smells of fried, baked, boiled and grilled food that ranges in ethnicity from Indian Delight’s Onion Bhujia to L&L European Delight’s Perogies and everything in between such as authentic tacos, pizza and roasted nuts. Some food vendors haul carts across the state to set up on at the market while others set table just outside the front door of their Court Avenue restaurant. On hot mornings, vendors think wisely and offered fresh-squeezed orange

juice and fruit-based smoothies. The easiest to find, they tend to have the longest lines. The sound of thousands of eager shoppers is somewhat muffled by acoustic guitars, pianos, fiddles, drums and voices. Freelance musicians provide less-than-typical grocery aisle music as shoppers meander from cart to tent to table. All aspects of the Des Moines Farmers Market melting pot meld together to create an around-the-world shopping experience in Iowa’s capitol. And while each vendor provides something unique, most share one common quality; their products are all grown or made in Iowa. MARKET . . . Page 4B

Six Iowa farm families to be honored at Iowa State Fair Six Iowa farm families will be honored as recipients of The Way We Live Award at the 2012 Iowa State Fair. Each family will be recognized for their love of the land and the product they produce in an individual award ceremony during the fair, which runs from August 9 through 19. The Way We Live Award recognizes industrious Iowa families that demonstrate a daily dedication to animal agriculture and exemplify farm values derived from hard work and a love for the occupation of farming. Entrants were asked to submit a short essay describing how living on a farm and choosing the occupation of farming has shaped their family’s life. Six recipients of the award were chosen from a pool of 75 entries representing a variety of commodities and locations throughout Iowa. Each family will receive a prize package including $250 cash, fair admission tickets, parking, fair food tickets, and recognition in the Paul R. Knapp Animal Learning Center during the fair. The Way We Live Award is sponsored by NewsRadio 1040 WHO and Tractor Supply Company. Following are the families to be honored:

Benning family, Ackley Keith and Dar Benning live on the same farm now that they bought when they got married. Instead of attending college, Keith followed in his father’s footsteps and pursued the farm life. Keith and Dar’s three children did the same, and each of them were involved in 4-H and FFA in high school and showed at the fair. Their two sons, Brad and Darin, have married and

started families of their own, with both of their young sons already eager to join the farming operation. Brad moved into his grandparent’s house near Keith and Dar. Darin bought land close by and built a house. Between the three farms, they own 1,400 acres, with four hog confinement barns, cattle and chickens. Keith, Brad and Darin work in the fields, keep up with maintenance and tend to the livestock. Dar and her two daughters-in-law help out with yard work, cooking and raising their young families. To the Bennings, farming is life and there is no other career they would rather be doing.

Henry family, Indianola Keith and Marie Henry not only share their love of farming with their own family, but they also open their home to share that love and understanding with others in their community. After more than 25 years of marriage, they have established a farrowing operation and a several hundred acre farm. Keith has worked hard to establish a working relationship between his children and his father, Edwin Henry, and his uncle, Dale Henry. The multigenerational knowledge that flows between these three generations benefits all. The farrowing is done in conjunction with a family farm operation that includes cattle, hogs and crops. Keith and his children provide all the labor hours that are necessary to maintain the farm. As one of the few farrowing operations in Warren County, Keith has done all he can to promote this practice with other county youth. Keith and Marie also spend their time teaching children who don’t live on farms about agriculture. They volun-

teer to lead 4-H clubs and help with the Warren County Fair, and their four children (Lexie, Allison, Megan and Jordan) are all award-winning members of 4-H and FFA and are working toward degrees in farming careers. The children are an intricate part of this operation and have serious responsibilities on the farm. Keith and Marie took their love for the farming community to a new level when their church, Farmers Chapel, burned down. They led the effort to rebuild the church and dedicated their time to those around them. The Henrys believe it is important to help involve the community in understanding what it means to farm and how important it is to the country.

Olthoff family, Stanhope Several years ago Bart Olthoff worked as a lab technician at the National Animal Disease Center in Ames and Katie, his wife, worked as a teacher. They had a desire to raise their children in the country but had no set plan. The opportunity to buy a turkey farm came up in 2009 and the couple couldn’t pass it up. Bart’s dad and grandfather had raised turkeys but timing did not allow Bart to continue in the turkey business. Since 2009, they have been living in the country raising their two children, Adam, 3, and Isaac, 1. Although they are new to the farm world, Bart and Katie are fully embracing their new country life. Bart constructed tunnel ventilated turkey barns, using the latest energy efficiency and technology to keep his turkeys comfortable and well cared for. Bart and Katie hosted an open house with the Coalition to Support Iowa’s Farmers to celebrate the third generation of the family turkey farm.

Katie has a blog, onthebanksofsquawcreek.com, Facebook page and Twitter account to connect with people and educate them about her farm life, family and home. “There are lots of risks involved, but we feel that the financial benefits are nothing compared to raising our kids on a farm in this lifestyle,” said Katie. Katie is also participating in a volunteer program called Common Ground, a social media effort sponsored by the United Soybean Board and the National Corn Growers Association, where she connects with other moms through social media and to answer questions about how farmers grow our food.

Ronnebaum family, Earlville For more than 30 years, Delbert and Darlene Ronnebaum farmed land that’s been in their family since 1941. It’s where they raised their five children, taught them about agriculture and dairy farming and built such close bonds with neighbors that they’re considered family. Today all of their children live within five miles of the two family farms and are passing down the farming knowledge to their own kids. Delbert has been a long-time member of the American Legion Post 136 in Dyersville and was awarded the Delaware County Distinguished Dairy Farmer Award in 2009. In addition to helping Delbert with both farms, Darlene also has worked at the Good Neighbor Home in Manchester for 23 years as a nurse. The Ronnebaums were nominated by their neighbor, Jill Lantermans. “Having grown up on a dairy farm next to one of Del-

bert’s farms, I’ve known his family my entire life,” she said. “He’s the first one to come pulling into your field if the rain is coming and you are frantically trying to finish your fieldwork. If there’s something you need and he has it – it’s yours. No questions asked. If someone has a fire, storm damage, is suffering with an illness or death in the family, he’s there right away offering his help.”

Kent Timmerman, Cherokee

Mick and LaVon Sager both grew up on family farms in southwest Iowa, learning to care for beef, sheep and hogs, and maintaining the land for future generations. When it came time to raise a family of their own, they chose to raise their four children (Whitney, Heather, Jordan and Tucker) on the farm where Mick grew up. As a family, they care for their farm of 55 sheep, 38 feeder calves, 210 chickens, 20 turkeys and 2 llamas. Sisters Whitney, Heather and Jordan have each begun raising their own sheep flock. They trade labor for feed from their dad to help lower their operation costs, and they have all earned the American FFA Degree for their sheep-raising efforts, the highest degree awarded by the FFA. Tucker began his own egg selling business. He sells more than 40 dozen eggs each week to local customers who are looking for farm fresh, free-range chicken eggs. Only when all the animals are fed and settled in for the night, does this farming family’s day end. Mick and LaVon, both former 4-H and FFA members, volunteer their time and leadership to the clubs their children are involved in. LaVon has served as a 4-H leader for the past 15 years and served as a fairgrounds committee member for 4

Kent and Natasha Timmerman both grew up on farms, working alongside their dads when they were young. Natasha vowed she’d never marry a farmer but Kent changed her plans. Natasha met Kent in college and the two quickly immersed themselves in a farming life of their own. When Kent’s dad died in a tragic ATV accident, Kent took over the whole farming operation and has managed it for the last 14 years. The couple bought Kent’s grandfather’s home and started a new generation of Timmerman cattlemen with their three children (Cole, Trey and Ally). Kent’s true passion is his cattle, and he takes every opportunity to share this love with his two boys. The boys have shown their bottle calves at the county fair for the past few years, and they help dad and ride along in the tractor. Kent is up at all hours checking calves, working the fields, baling hay or helping others in the community with their farms. Natasha is an elementary school teacher, and she makes sure her farm boys are well fed when she gets home. Kent Timmerman is dedicated to their herd of cattle and managing their crops.

MARKET, from Page 1B “People are becoming more conscious of what they are eating,” said Zoami “Sami” Sosa, of Crooked Creek in Auburn, Sac County. “People bring stuff from all of the country but a lot of people come to the tents and ask if their products are based in Iowa and go from there to look for the best local products.” Sosa and her father have helped at Crooked Creek since 1993 and have run the operation since 2009. Crooked Creek has been a presence at the Des Moines Farmers Market for at least 10 years where they offer beans, tomatoes, a variety of peppers, melons and much more. “We sell tiny little tomatoes that are almost marble size. They are extremely popular,” Sosa explained. To stock a table and keep it full from 7 a.m. to noon is no easy task. Vendors have to begin to prepare for the market almost a week in advance depending on their item, which allows very little rest from market to market. “We pick during the week but all Friday is devoted to market picking and packaging,” Sosa said. “We start as early as 5 a.m.

Each week, Sinclair must label the jars, pick the fruit and vegetables, make the jellies and create her signs, but first she must decide which flavors to even carry at the market. She said she usually car-

Technology and traveling One of my friends from Des Moines texted me this week that he had received a call and random message of sound from a foreign-looking cell phone number, that had the same first six digits as mine. He asked if I recognized it. Unfortunately, I did. It was my husband. Apparently his phone had independently decided to call my friend, unbeknownst to him who was happily helping my son wash one of his steers for the upcoming fair. Totally against my advice, my husband went ahead and had purchased a smart phone before we left for the cattle show in Ohio. He thought the GPS feature of the smart phone would help. He also wanted ready access to the markets and weather. I couldn’t talk him out of it. Now, this is the same person who went through several cell phones in one year because farming is dirty and more than a little dangerous for advanced technology. He had gone through so many phones the cell phone insurance was no longer was

valid. Ouch. So he and my son picked out a phone that they thought was durable enough to withstand life on the farm, but still had the nifty aforementioned features. Now, my husband is intelligent, but for some reason technology befuddles him. I’ve taught him how to attach files to an email so many times that I think my 9-year-old son knows how to do it too. He finally caught on to that one. I don’t think it’s him so much as the fact that he didn’t grow up with technology like I did. He’s at the tail end of the baby boomers, and didn’t start using computers for every day business until after we were married. He was 30. On the other hand, I’m at the beginning of the Gen X group. My school had a computer lab before most other schools knew what a computer lab was. We took classes over a closed circuit television with a neighboring school district

before the ICN (Iowa Communications Network) was even conceived. I’m not going to pull an Al Gore and say we invented it. I’m just saying that ours was in use before the 1989 bill passed to implement the ICN. I learned how to program a computer in BASIC before I could drive. I’ve been spoiled with technology. So, it was with great amusement that I watched my husband purchase his smart phone. One of his first “app” purchases was the game Angry Birds. Ironically, five years ago my husband criticized video games and said we would never purchase one for our house. (Thanks to my sisters’ generous Christmas gift later that year, we acquired a Wii.) Some of you may remember last month when I told you about our credit cards being shut down on our trip, which we thought was from over use. Sadly, that was only part of the reason. We had put a block on

The couple we purchased the heifer from gave him some tips about her genetics, and my dad helped him on the finer points of selling products and how to shake hands. But in the end, it was up to my son. “I hear you’re looking for a heifer,” he said to the judges as he introduced himself at the beginning. It was all uphill from there, I was told. Parents couldn’t listen and his phone didn’t call me so I could hear.

Ingredients 1 cup uncooked whole grain instant brown rice 2 beef ribeye steaks, cut Âž inch thick (about 6 ounces each) well trimmed 2 tablespoons soy sauce 1 teaspoon instant coffee powder 2 tablespoons vegetable oil, divided Â˝ cup chopped onion Â˝ cup sliced green onions Â˝ cup thinly sliced cremini mushrooms 2 eggs, beaten Instructions 1. Prepare rice according to package directions. Set aside; keep warm. 2. Cut beef steaks across the grain into 1/8-inch thick strips, about 1-inch long; set aside. 3. Combine soy sauce and instant coffee in small bowl. 4. Stir to dissolve coffee; set aside. 5. Heat 2 teaspoons oil in large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat until hot. 6. Add onion, green onions and mushrooms; stirfry 1 to 2 minutes. 7. Add eggs; cook 30 seconds to 1 minute or just until cooked through, stirring occasionally. 8. Stir in cooked rice and soy sauce-coffee mixture; stir-fry 1 to 2 minutes or until heated through. 9. Remove from skillet; keep warm. 10. Heat 2 teaspoons oil in large nonstick skillet or wok over medium-high heat until hot. 11. Add half of beef; stir-fry beef 1 to 2 minutes or until outside surface of beef is no longer pink. Remove from pan. 12. Repeat with remaining 2 teaspoons oil and last half of beef. 13. Return beef to skillet; stir in rice mixture. 14. Cook and stir about 1 minute or until heated through. Makes 4 servings.

A conversation with Catherine Swoboda, Director, World Food Prize Iowa Education Programs Aaron Putze: Tell us about the World Food Prize. Catherine Swoboda: It was the idea of Iowa-native Dr. Norman Borlaug when he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1970 for his work in agriculture. He envisioned a prize that would honor those who make significant contributions to improving the world’s food supply and create role models who could inspire others to do the same. Aaron: Did he have some help in making his dream a reality? Catherine: Yes. Iowa businessman and philanthropist John Ruan shared his vision and firmly believed that a “Nobel Prize for Food and Agriculture” rightfully belonged in Iowa. The Ruan family backed up this belief by its endowment of the Prize. In 2011, The World Food Prize celebrated its 25th Anniversary of recognizing outstanding accomplishments that have increased the quantity, quality and availability of food for people. Aaron: Define the mission of the World Food Prize. Catherine: It emphasizes the importance of a nutritious and sustainable food supply for all people, recognizes heroes who have successfully worked to improve global food security and calls attention to what can still be accomplished. Aaron: Why is Iowa the perfect home for the prize? Catherine: Our state has a rich agricultural and humanitarian legacy that is unique in the world and countless Iowans support the mission of the World Food Prize and have played a critical role in its legacy. In addition to Dr. Borlaug, the contributions of four giants immediately come to mind: George Washington Carver, whose research led to the development of so many new uses of crops; Herbert Hoover, whose humanitarian efforts in Europe helped avoid mass starvation; Henry A. Wallace, whose vision for agriculture’s role in establishing and maintaining world peace continues to influence us today; and Robert Ray, whose appreciation of this Iowa legacy inspired him to welcome Asian refugees to Iowa following the end of the Vietnam conflict.

Aaron: You direct the World Food Prize Iowa Youth Institute. Tell me about it. Catherine: It’s a program for Iowa high school students and teachers to discuss world hunger, poverty and pressing global challenges and identify how to overcome these challenges. Aaron: What do they do? Catherine: They become aware of the problem by researching global food security and sharing their knowledge with other leaders, researchers and experts who are addressing these challenges. Aaron: What do you enjoy most about your role with the World Food Prize? Catherine: There’s never a dull moment because of the many aspects to the job. It represents creativity, working with people, education and believing in what you do and that your work will make a difference. Aaron: What holds the most promise to ending world hunger? Catherine: Dr. Borlaug often spoke about the critical roles that science, technology and policy play in eradicating hunger. Towards the end of his life, he identified the importance of educating and inspiring young people to continue this important work. The next generation holds the potential and responsibility to finish what Dr. Borlaug started. Aaron: Some criticize the role of technology in agriculture. What’s your perspective? Catherine: It’s improved the lives of millions and the Green Revolution is a perfect example. Dr. Borlaug’s high-yielding, dwarf wheat combined with improved agricultural extension, provision of fertilizer and investments in infrastructure averted starvation for more than a billion people. The Green Revolution demonstrates the importance of supportive policies to enable farmers in both the developed and developing world to benefit from technology. Aaron: Define the work of Dr. Borlaug in one sentence.

About Catherine Swoboda Catherine is a Des Moines native and obtained a Bachelor of Science in agronomy and Masters of Science in crop production and physiology from Iowa State University. She recently coordinated the first World Food Prize Iowa Youth Institute that involved hundreds of high school students from throughout the state for discussion about food and agriculture.

Catherine: A lifetime of working right alongside farmers to use science to fight hunger. Aaron: Who’s had the greatest impact on your professional work? Catherine: My science teachers. From the time I entered middle school and throughout high school, every science teacher I had, in his or her own way, deepened my interest and appreciation for this field. Hot, dry weather leads to less than ideal crop report Early July proved to be damaging to crop producers in Iowa. The USDA released its weekly report for the first full week of July. From July 2 to July 8, temperatures hung around triple digits. Overall, temperatures for the entire state of Iowa were more than nine degrees above average. Lamoni in Decatur County and Osceola in Clarke County registered the hottest day of the year so far with 105 degrees on Saturday, July 7. This week also marked the driest week since early February of 2012. Just one county, Dickinson County, in western Iowa, saw more than .10 inches of rainfall during the week. On a whole, the statewide average for the week was just .02 inches. Currently, no region in the state has a surplus of topsoil or subsoil moisture. Nearly 74 percent of subsoil moisture in western Iowa is listed as short to very short and 78 percent of topsoil moisture is listed as short to very short. Due to the heat and dry conditions, just 46 percent of corn and 48 percent of soybeans in Iowa are listed in good to excellent condition. At 62 percent of corn tasseled, tasseling is well ahead of last year’s number of just three percent and nearly 50 percent better than the five year average of 16 percent.
