Iowa’s prairie has a partner in Dedham by Emma Struve When I first moved back to Iowa from the desert of Arizona I was nearly blinded by the greenness of the state. But to evaluate the plants growing along Iowa’s highways today – by sheer numbers of individual plants the winners would have to be corn and soybeans – the diversity of species is much lower than before the prairies were turned under for row-crop farming. I had the distinct pleasure to visit with Jon Judson while exploring the reconstructed prairie on his farm. Judson has dedicated more than a decade to restoring dozens of acres of his rural Dedham farm located in Carroll County to prairie habitat that boasts as many as 130 grass, flower and forb species. The project started with just a few acres coming out of CRP in 1994. The first step in establishing prairie was to get rid of the brome grass that had been planted. The soil was lightly worked. Judson then spread a mix of prairie seed over the top of the soil. He explained that a common misconception is that prairie seed should be drilled. However, some of the species typically found in prairie mixes are so small that when drilled do not have the energy to emerge from beneath the soil. The most important planting aspect, rather, is good seedto-soil contact. Another practice that commonly occurs is too few prairie species are planted in an area at a time. “One species or two species are not a prairie,” Judson explained. “A native prairie is an assemblage of prairie plants as well as insects and soil components.” Looking across the acres of land dotted by blooming plants and more species of grass than could be counted on two hands, he added, “Even for me to say this is prairie, is still stretching it. There are still some things that aren’t here that you would find on remnant prairies: some species of plants, some species of insects.” The seed Judson planted on his farm was collected from local native prairie remnants so that his would be genetically and phenotypically similar. This first seed he collected by hand and with old bluegrass seed harvesters at the painstaking pace of two to three acres per day. “Essentially it’s one generation away from a native prairie,” stated Judson. “I wanted to try and make sure that the prairie that was here, that was planted, is like the remnant prairie so that at some point in time people will be able to come here...and see what this landscape used to look like.” PRAIRIE . . . Grass-fed beef a natural partner to growing prairie by Emma Struve While Jon Judson’s business is growing prairie, harvesting the seed and consulting with other landowners on establishing additional reconstructed prairies, he also raises cattle like many farmers in hilly western Iowa. On his rural Dedham farm Judson has established an entirely grassfed feeding system.
Supplements his steers receive include a salt block, mineral block, water and hay. Judson admits that it takes longer for the calves to reach finish weight without any grain, as much as two years, his input costs are extremely low because there is very little time required to feed them and very little money to be spent on
feed. The most important aspect of managing the animals in the grass-system is pasture rotation. Judson chose to produce livestock in this way for two reasons. The first, he said, is health benefits associated with meat from grass-fed animals. The second, “land should not be used to
store cattle on.” When ground is too densely packed with livestock it promotes erosion and weed growth, Judson explained. The steers are Angus from a line that has been carefully selected and bred to be fed in a grass system. “We’ve been really happy with the meat,” Judson commented.
Types of Prairies Remnant prairies: Areas of land that have not been farmed at all Recolonized prairies: Areas of land that were minimally disturbed and enough species of prairie plants remained to resume growth in the area. Reconstructed prairies: Areas where seed is brought in and the prairie plants and species are reassembled.

PFI hosts RAGBRAI riders at field day, serves veggies The Practical Farmers of Iowa (PFI) treated RAGBRAI riders to fresh blueberries, summer squash, green beans, grape tomatoes, and carrots on Monday, July 25, in Templeton in Carroll County. PFI hosted the field day to spread the organization’s message about healthy, locally grown food and sustainable agriculture. Luke Gran, next generation coordinator with PFI, explained that the organization is a community network that supports and values a “triple bottom line.” The three aspects of a triple bottom, Gran continued, and are ecological, economic and social sustainability in a moderate mix. PFI features farmers as leaders, he added. Gran commented, “It’s great to treat folks sweating and working hard to nutrient rich, dense food as they are honoring rural Iowa.” He was joined at the field day by PFI Ames Office Manager Patrick Burke and Jon Judson, PFI member from Dedham. Communication and education At a meeting of Scout volunteers this week, I was discussing with other leaders some of the difficulties that teachers face in my town’s school system. Our school system in unique in that we have many students who are new to the English language, who did not hear English in their homes before they reached the age of five and went to school. The gentlemen asked me if I was a teacher. I said no, but in a second I revised it. I don’t get paid for being a teacher, but I do teach children through volunteering in leadership roles through the Scouting and 4-H programs. Though not as structured day-to-day as teachers in the school system, the jobs are equally challenging. In the past few months, I’ve been working with a group of Scouts on their communication merit badge, determining if the work that they have com-
pleted to deliver their speech or write a letter to the editor is enough to earn the merit badge, while providing encouragement along the way. Public speaking is difficult for some children to learn, and many of them pass into adulthood without learning that valuable skill. I’m very proud of my 4-H kids, many of whom participated in the communications events at our local fair. Three of the events from our club, including my son’s events, were selected to go onto the Iowa State Fair. Two others were named Top Junior and Top Intermediate in the Pride of Iowa event. The three state fair activities will be on August 12th, so my family will be at the state fair cheering them on in the 4-H building. My son will go back with his heifer on the following Sunday, and participate in shows on Monday and Tuesday.
The first day of school in our district is Wednesday, August 17th. I still have mixed feelings about sending them to school following those three busy days at the state fair. As I understand the Iowa laws, schools can not begin the school year until after Labor Day, unless they obtain a special waiver to start up to two weeks prior to that date. I know of many area schools who are beginning during the Iowa State Fair, which I don’t think is fair to any of the children. I think the schools are overlooking the learning that could be taking place from families being able to go to the State Fair. The fair always has been a treasure trove of family and children’s activities that also help educate participants about agriculture in Iowa. Even though we live in the middle of Iowa, I know some students who have no
THE
FARMER’S WIFE By Christy Welch clue where or how they get some of their food, and learning in a fun environment such as the fair would be easier and much more fun for the kids. I’m sure they would retain it more as well. Children should be given the opportunity to learn
these things, outside of the normal school year. How many educational opportunities are lost at the end of the summer because the schools are beginning earlier and the kids have to go back to school? I don’t think I’m asking for too much, just that the Iowa legislature put their collective foot down and not let school systems begin until the unofficial end of the summer -- the last day of the Iowa State Fair. I know many families who would take advantage of the learning opportunities at the fair. If you’re from one of the lucky school systems that doesn’t start until after the fair, I urge you to take advantage of some of the fun, family activities offered at the Iowa State Fair. Check out the many articles in Section B of this month’s Iowa Farm and Ranch for more activities. See you at the Iowa State Fair!

IntelliAir’s BinManager System uses 21st century technology to take the guess work out of grain conditioning by Gordon Wolf Grain producers are constantly looking for ways to get more return on the crops they harvest. Grain storage plays an integral part in the financial return. The ideal grain storage system would allow a producer to market quality grain that has the optimum moisture content, would decrease the energy bills and would reduce the risk of manually inspecting grain bins. IntelliAir’s BinManager System was designed with these goals in mind. The system uses sensors in the grain that measure temperature and moisture levels inside the bin and a weather station that measures the outside air temperature and humidity to determine when to run fans for natural air drying or operate low-temperature heaters. The system is designed to avoid moisture build-up, which causes moldy, crusty grain. And by keeping grain at the right temperature, hot spots are avoided. BinManager’s technology allows producers to monitor the moisture and temperature of their stored grain from any computer with internet access or from their smartphone. The system will even alert a producer through an email or text message if a problem arises with grain going out of condition. In addition to drying grain, the BinManager System also cools the grain when necessary and can rehydrate grain that has been overdried. “Beans are very commonly harvested overdried; nine percent moisture is not uncommon coming out of the field,” commented Joel Moellers, Northern Midwestern District Manager with IntelliAir Services. “Rehydrating beans pays a huge dividend.” The BinManager System can work with any kind of grain storage bin, optimizing each bin’s design capabilities. It can work with any type of grain. It is preprogrammed to handle 144 different types of commodities.
“The farmer tells BinManager what type of commodity is in the bin and tells it the desired temperature and moisture content,” explained Moellers. The BinManager System can be installed by IntelliAir, by the producer, or by a contractor or electrician hired by the producer. If IntelliAir installs the system, the company will hire an electrician licensed in that state to hook up the power. IntelliAir’s BinManager System was born from the idea that something better should be available to condition grain. Todd Sears, president of IntelliAir, is a beef and grain producer from the Kansas City area. Because of his experience, he started managing soybeans for the largest producer of tofu, said Moellers. “Todd was buying everything available in the market place for soybean storage management. After enough years working with other companies’ systems, he decided better technology was available. He took his experience in grain production and management and partnered with an engineer to write the algorithm to monitor the temperature and moisture of grain,” Moellers stated. Moellers, who grew up on a hog and beef producing farm in northeast Iowa, joined IntelliAir because he saw the company had the best grain conditioning system available. For several years Moellers worked for a company that designed natural air drying systems for bins, using a temperature monitoring system. “I looked at every company that manufactured monitoring systems, and IntelliAir stood head and shoulders above the rest,” he stated. The payback on IntelliAir’s BinManager System depends on how a producer is using it to improve their operation. Some producers may be very efficient to begin with and may have an advance drying system. However, to rehydrate a 20,000 bushel bin of soybeans, for example, will more than pay for the system in one year,
said Moellers. And just in terms of energy efficiency from aeration, BinManager provides a two to three year return on investment. Another advantage of the BinManager System is safety. The system doesn’t entirely eliminate the need Joel Moellers, Northern for producers to climb into Midwestern District Manag- their bins but they won’t er with IntelliAir Services. have to do that nearly as Photo submitted often. “The system checks the grain using in-grain sensor once each hour, 24/7,” Moellers pointed out. “Most farmers might be doing well if they check their bins (manually) once every two weeks.” IntelliAir’s BinManager System has been on the market for five years. The company is constantly improving the system as more data and newer technology becomes available. In addition to the BinManager System, IntelliAir offers BinManager Basic. Both systems operate the same except that BinManager Basic does not offer internet access to analyze and monitor grain storage. Producers will, however, still have access to real-time, accurate drying data and system alerts. “The web-based version (BinManager) can provide updates anytime online,” said Moellers. “When we make an improvement, within 20 minutes all customers’ systems are updated at no cost to them. Customers have no software to download. We send the new programming to the unit on the bin. No IntelliAir customer has ever paid for a programming update. That is something we are proud of.”

Updated soybean aphid field guide available Iowa State University (ISU) Extension and the Iowa Soybean Association (ISA) released a collaborative second edition of the Soybean Aphid Field Guide. The guide’s authors are Erin Hodgson, ISU Extension entomologist, and Matt O’Neal, ISU research entomologist. “Every year we learn more about the biology of soybean aphids and new ways to prevent this pest from causing yield loss,” O’Neal said. “These insights have been made possible through funding from the soybean check off program. We have incorporated these discoveries and tools into the revised edition of the guide in an effort to return this check off-funded research back to soybean farmers.” The second edition of the Soybean Aphid Field Guide is expanded in every section. One of the biggest additions to the toolbox of aphid management strategies is aphid-resistant soybeans. The guide includes a review of the research that led to aphid resistance becoming a common component of soybean genetics for many current and future commercial soybean varieties. Printed copies of the Soybean Aphid Field Guide can be ordered from the ISU Extension Online Store at www.extension.iastate.edu/store/ or by calling 515-294-5247. The guide may also be obtained by contacting the Iowa Soybean Association at 800-383-1423. In addition, the guide can be viewed online at www.iasoybeans.com/productionresearch/.

Iowa Soybean Association reviews 2011 legislative session The 2011 legislative session was the third longest session in Iowa history. In the end, the state budget approved for fiscal year 2012 spends $5.99 billion and is projected to leave the state with a $284 million ending balance, after all the state’s reserve funds are filled. On behalf of Iowa’s soybean farmers, the Iowa Soybean Association (ISA) reported having worked successfully on several important issues. These include: Biodiesel Credit - the bill extends the biodiesel tax credit to 2014 and eliminates the eligibility requirement that the dealer sell and dispense 50 percent or more biodieselblended fuel during the tax year. The minimum biodiesel classification is increased from B-2 to B-10 (10 percent biodiesel) for calculating the credit. The requirement that the tax credit be calculated separately for each motor fuel site is eliminated. Family Farm Tax Credit – this bill allows family farm LLCs to qualify for the family farm credit in the same way that a family farm corporation can qualify. Ethanol and Biodiesel Tax Credits - changes include various and significant improvements. Water Resources Council – this bill transfers the council from the office of the governor to the secretary of agriculture and provides the secretary of agriculture is the chairperson of the council. ISA also supported a number of issues directly related to agriculture that did not pass. These include: Ag Protection Bill - the agriculture protection bill started out covering several areas that are problematic in agri-

culture’s fight against animal rights activists. The bill passed the House but ran into political issues in the Senate. It is believed when the legislature returns in January, they will take up the agriculture protection bill early in the session. Electrical Farm Inspection Repeal Bill - many commodity groups worked together to draft an agreement addressing problems associated with electrical farm inspections. In addition, a coalition of legislators wanted a complete exemption for electrical inspections done on farms. The total exemption passed the House; however, complete exemption was not able to pass the Senate. No changes were made to the current law. EPC Restructuring Bill - three bills were introduced in the House to address the Environmental Protection Commission (EPC). The bill that passed the house would shift rulemaking authority to the director and not the appointed body, and would require all rules being written to be done within the confines of passed legislation. The bill did not pass the Senate, perhaps because the sense of urgency subsided following new appointments to the EPC. ISA Director of Policy and Producer Outreach Carol Balvanz stated, “Given the fact that budget issues consumed so much of legislators’ time, we feel it was a successful session in that many of our issues were addressed. Looking ahead, ag groups will need to work together to keep farmers’ needs in front of an increasingly urban legislature.” Soybean farmers with questions about legislative issues can visit with Balvanz by calling 800-383-1423.

Producers encouraged to ASA again urges scout for SDS in soybeans In past years, sudden death syndrome (SDS) has appeared during the last week of July or the first week of August in Iowa. Researchers at Iowa State University (ISU) anticipate symptoms of SDS will begin appearing in the state soon. Although researchers do not expect SDS to be as widespread or as severe as the 2010 growing season, some counties in the state have received higher-thannormal precipitation. Scientists expect the risk of SDS in these counties to be higher since disease development is favored by wet conditions. The first symptoms of the disease are usually found on more compacted and low areas of the field. First symptoms are seen on the leaves of infected plants as scattered, yellow spots between leaf veins. Large sections of leaf tissue between veins turn yellow as spots grow together. These yellow blotches soon turn brown, but the veins remain green. Eventually, the leaves die and drop, but the petioles remain on the stem. Infected plants are also easily pulled from the soil because the roots are rotted. When split lengthwise with a knife, the internal tissue of the main or tap root will be gray to reddish brown, not healthy white. ISU researchers emphasize that, while there are no in-season management options for SDS, scouting is still important for several reasons. First, this is a good time to evaluate soybean varieties for resistance to SDS. Growing resistant varieties, or avoiding very susceptible varieties, is the most effective way to reduce losses to SDS. Also, identifying fields or parts of fields with SDS can help with future management practices. These management tactics include reducing soil compaction since the disease has been associated with compacted soil; planting fields with a history of SDS towards the end of a planting schedule when soils may be warmer and drier; and testing for the presence of soybean cyst nematodes. Soybean cyst nematode (SCN) is usually, but not always, associated with SDS and may increase its severity, especially in varieties that are SCN-susceptible. Therefore, management practices to reduce SCN populations, including SCN-resistant variety selection and preventing the spread of soil from field to field, may delay onset and spread of SDS. “Several Iowa State University pathologists and agronomists continue research to improve our understanding of the biology of the fungus that causes SDS and develop improved management options for the disease,” said Alison Robertson, ISU Extension plant pathologist. “The ISU soybean breeding program continues to develop and release germplasm with improved resistance to SDS that is available to all private soybean breeding companies. ISU scientists collaborate with scientists at other universities.” Most of the SDS research at ISU is funded by soybean

Key advances from the last five years of research on SDS at Iowa State include: Development and release of soybean breeding lines with improved resistance to SDS that can be used by seed companies to develop resistant varieties adapted to Iowa Discovery, identification and molecular characterization of a toxin produced by the SDS fungus that causes the disease and that the toxin needs to be exposed to light to cause the disease on the leaves Discovery that the fungus needs to colonize the central part (or vascular system) of the roots so the toxin can be moved up from the roots to the leaves in the cells that carry water up the plant Discovery that soybean seedlings are most vulnerable to root infection in the first few days after planting, and in cold soils the seedlings are vulnerable to infection for a longer period of time than when planting occurs in warmer soil Discovery that the SDS fungus can survive in corn residue, including corn kernels dropped in field, and this may be a way the fungus overwinters from season to season Several other ongoing projects include: Sequencing of the entire genetic composition (genome) of the SDS pathogen, which will allow scientists to identify the genes involved in the ability of the fungus to cause disease on soybeans Identifying the mechanisms behind the interaction between the SCN and the SDS pathogen Identifying soybean genes involved in resistance to SDS using molecular approaches Continuing to screen soybean breeding populations adapted to Iowa for improved resistance to SDS Evaluating the impact of crop rotation, planting date and seed treatment for SDS management in Iowa

The American Soybean Association (ASA) and a group representing nearly all sectors of U.S. agriculture called on President Barack Obama and members of Congress to stand up for American exports and the jobs that depend on them by taking immediate action to implement the pending free trade agreements (FTAs) with South Korea, Colombia and Panama. "Each of these trade agreements was signed at least four years ago," said ASA President Alan Kemper, a soybean producer from Lafayette, Indiana. "The longer we wait to implement these agreements, the farther behind we will fall in those markets. Already, serious damage has been done and further delays will unquestionably cause further harm." The Korean government released figures in late July showing that during the first two weeks of the EUKorea FTA , trade volume between the two rose 17.4 percent. Exports from Korea to the EU rose 19 percent and exports from the EU to Korea rose 16 percent. "This new Korea-EU trade almost certainly came at the expense of U.S. agricultural products," Kemper said. "Korean importers will buy goods from sources that are eligible for reduced or zero tariffs, rather than from the U.S., which pays full import duties." The ASA said if there is any doubt about the seriousness of the problem for U.S. agricultural exports, one need only consider the damage that has already been done by the delay in implementing the Colombia FTA. Due to trade agreements Colombia has with Argentina and Brazil, U.S. exports of key commodities such as corn, wheat and soybeans have been hit hard, and the U.S. share of Colombia’s agricultural imports has fallen from 44 percent to 21 percent since 2007. "It’s difficult to watch years of market development efforts evaporate in a matter of months because, even as low-cost producers, we are not able to compete on the basis of price," Kemper added. "If our competitors pay lower tariffs, we will become a residual supplier if we supply anything at all." "Even if Congress approves the three FTAs in the fall, implementation would almost certainly be delayed past January 1, 2012, thereby putting us even farther behind our competitors," Kemper said.

Strong international demand results in eight percent growth in Iowa exports Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Bill Northey and Iowa Department of Economic Development (IDED) director Debi Durham announced that international demand remains strong for Iowa’s agriculture products. They cited recently released numbers by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) showing that Iowa exported $7.04 billion in agricultural goods in fiscal year 2010. “Iowa remains the number two state for ag exports as international demand remains strong and our corn, soybeans and meat products have a great reputation around that world, Northey stated. “As countries in Asia continue to develop and incomes rise, I expect our exports to continue to grow. The $7.04 billion in exports in 2010 is up from $6.55 billion in 2009, but still not reaching that $7.38 billion in 2008. “IDED is committed to helping Iowa companies find new international outlets for their products as increasing trade is key to economic recovery and job creation, said Durham. According to the USDA, in 2009, every $1 billion in US agricultural exports required 8,400 American jobs. Iowa’s leading agricultural export is soybeans and soybean products, which was $3.29 billion in 2010. The next two leading products are feed grains and products at $1.87 billion and live animals and meat, excluding poultry, at $1.4 billion. Other agriculture exports include feeds and fodders ($172.1 million), poultry and products ($66.8 million), dairy products ($59 million), hides and skins ($56.1), and fats, oils and greases ($44.4 million). Other exports include wheat and products, seeds, and other. Durham and Northey both traveled to South Korea and China with Lt. Governor Kim Reynolds in June to promote Iowa exports with these key Iowa trading partners.

Beauty of prairie requires much work PRAIRIE, from Page 1A Certain species in the mix emerge the first year after planting and others emerge the second or subsequent years. Because of their physiology some prairie plant seeds must undergo a freeze-thaw cycle before they germinate. Judson added that prairie plots can be seeded early in the spring, late in the spring, even in the late fall once the growing season has ended for emergence the following year. Judson now collects mixed prairie seed from his land by combining the dried plants in the fall. Collecting seed from the prairie, he remarked, has little impact on the regeneration of the planting because most species in a prairie are long-lived perennials. Additionally, the combine is somewhat inefficient at harvesting the small seed, Judson estimated at 75 to 80 percent. He supplements the seed by harvesting earlier maturing varieties in dedicated, fenced seed production areas. An established prairie out-competes most weeds that try to colonize. Even plants that are typically seen in the Iowa landscape including Queen Ann’s Lace, wild parsnip, and red clover are weeds when they appear in the
After prairie plants are started in a greenhouse they are moved outdoors. These plants are destined for native-type landscape plantings desireable for their low maintenance needs or possibly even rain gardens. Photo by Emma Struve prairie. However, Judson and his staff, carefully monitor the planting and remove any weeds that emerge before they go to seed. The prairie border is mowed to control weeds. The more diverse the prairie, the more adroitly it will prevent the growth of weeds due to the use of below ground resources. An emerging use for prairie plantings is to aug-
ment cool season grasses for grazing. Brome and bluegrass – species prized for their early and vigorous growth – have replaced virtually all of the native prairie grass in pastures across the state but the productivity of these cool season grasses peter out in July and August and sometimes require supplemental feeding. “We have some that
grow earlier in the season,” Judson remarked, “but the big, tall, native grasses this is when they have their big push. The typical pasture grasses, this is when they’re just sitting there…I’ve got three different people now that I’m working with on native pasture projects.” Included in the native pastures are native grasses in combination with native
legumes to feed the pasture. An ideal solution is to have a variety of warm – prairie grass types – and cool – brome, bluegrass, etc. – season grasses available for grazing throughout the seasons, Judson commented. Another area of expanding demand for prairie plants is in landscaping and for use in rain garden plantings. In the case of rain gardens, native plants that are
adapted to the wetter conditions help filter water and slow down the flow of water to reduce flooding events and run-off from developed areas, Judson explained. He has been propagating plants in the two greenhouses on his farm. The seedlings are started in tubes that were originally designed for trees but work great for the species that thrive only with a strong, deep root system. Once the plants are established, and the weather is warmer the seedlings can be moved to cold frames and then transitioned to outdoors. When beginning his business, called Diversity Farms, Judson has relied primarily on word-ofmouth for advertising. He said that every acre of prairie planted in Iowa is like a business card so he almost never turns down a request for assistance. Judson, whose background is in wildlife and natural resource management with bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Iowa State University in wildlife biology and land management, commented, “I wasn’t going to do anything that didn’t have a positive impact on natural resources.” The prairie project very near Judson’s house, has now expanded to encompass more than 45 acres, is planned to be placed in a long-term easement.

Puck Custom Enterprises successful in adapting to changes in agriculture by Emma Struve To keep up with the rapid changes that occurred during the last three decades in the agriculture Ben Puck worked with his family and made drastic innovations in the custom manure application industry. “You couldn’t live off farming alone at that time,” Puck began his story, “You had to find something else to do. We decided that custom work was something we could take a look at.” In 1979, custom farm work was not traditional, he noted that “it was not something I was brought up to do.” Other than a few neighbors that would custom combine others’ farms, few people were in the business of hiring out their equipment and services. From the beginning of the business, Puck Custom
Enterprises, based just south of Manning, was a family operation. Ben worked first with his brother and now works with his wife Kathy and children, including son Jeremy and daughter Nancy. During the three decades PCE has been in operation the business has transitioned and adapted in step with the changes that have occurred in the agriculture industry. Puck offered as an example that he and his brother started the manure application business with vacuum trucks and they would service customers’ livestock buildings four or more times per year. As an additional contrast, “When we started pumping liquid manure, probably 70 percent or more of the hogs were still outside,” Puck commented. “Now, that’s
rapidly changed to where 99 percent of them are inside.” When his business started, manure would frequently be surface applied and then worked into the ground. The technology that Puck has innovated and crafted now involves remotely controlled pumps, drag hoses, and continuous injection. “Our several million gallon per year business has turned into a several hundred million gallon per year business, which is part of the evolution,” he noted. Puck did share the observation that the number of animals in Iowa has not changed much since the early 1980s. “In 1992 and 1993 we started to see the large confinement buildings being built; we were very intimi-

Ben Puck, of Manning, started Puck Custom Enterprises more than 30 years ago. The company has operated in different forms and under different names it has always offered an innovative approach to custom manure application.
A Puck Custom Enterprises manufactured innovation is the boat agitator at work on a manure lagoon. The free-floating, vertical agitator can replace three to five conventional pumps. Photos submitted
dated to wonder how we were going to get those pumped out,” Puck remarked. “It emphasized having to do a huge amount of liquid in a very short amount of time.” To stay competitive in the changing swine business, PCE would have to invest in new, likely larger equipment and restructure the operation to apply manure perhaps once a year instead of using the equipment year around. PCE used tractors and wagons until 2004 but introduced the drag hose system in 1998. “We got to the point where we could build equipment that was very, very efficient, very easy to use and reliable,” Puck stated. “In the last three or four years that has really escalated to be a large part of our business.” Puck explained that, essentially, the system works by pumping agitated manure from a pit or lagoon through hose lines that have been laid in a route to the field on which the manure will be applied. At points along the hose additional pumps are positioned to maintain the appropriate pressure and flow of the liquid. The hose is connected directly to the manure application equipment and is dragged along through the field. The pumps are wirelessly controlled by the tractor operator. The controllers function over the internet
and are flow-metered so the operator knows the inlet and outlet pressure. If an anomaly is detected, the pumps can be immediately shut off. “It minimizes drastically the opportunity for a broken hose or lack of checks and balances…our ability to react is way better,” Puck commented. “We build the system that pulls the hose and delivers (manure) to the soil,” Puck said. PCE also designed a hose cart to deliver the hose to the site and pick it up to decrease set-up time and a swing-arm that facilitates an articulated 4x4 tractor in end-row turning with the hose so the operator can move continuously in a “golf-club” shape instead of stopping and backing in a three point turn. The range of the system is theoretically indefinite because hose and pumps can always be added but two and a half miles is typically the economical and efficiency limit. The injection system itself does not differ so much except that, “the way you put the liquid in the ground is the whole key,” Puck insisted. The drag hose system captures the efficiency of “running loaded all the time.” One tractor and a wagon can inject 12,000 to 15,000 gallons of liquid manure in an hour. PCE’s system can now do almost 150,000 gallons per hour with one trac-
PAGE 15A tor pulling hose, which is seven times more efficient by comparison. Admittedly one tractor and wagon only takes one person and PCE’s system takes three. Puck pointed out with the hose system, “it can be done in such a manner so as not to be driving up and down the road, which limits our liability to the public roads and the infrastructure of the county.” For swine producers handling manure through a lagoon, PCE innovated an agitation boat that can replace three to five lagoon pumps and vertically agitate a large lagoon. By operating the single floating agitator, producers can save money on diesel fuel and the manure nutrients are evenly distributed. Agitation in deep pits is more complicated, Puck commented. The same type of engine and pump is utilized as on the boat, but hoses are laid around the building to move the liquid. “Our biggest Achilles’ heel right now is the floating solids on top,” he said. Puck criticized modern swine confinement design for the inability to adequately ventilate hydrogen sulfide gas during pit agitation. Building and ventilation design is just one element of the industry that provides an opportunity for refinement. Puck described manure management and application as an industry as a “new baby just getting up to walk.” He did observe that during his time as a custom applicator stewardship of the soil has improved. “I think agriculture has gone a long, long way towards helping manure management plans, helping the fertility of the soil, helping the profitability of the state. I think it’s kept more fish alive in the streams of the state, which is a healthy attribute for fresh water, clean water,” Puck said. For perspective he offered the statistics that there are at least 535 commercial manure applicators in the state of Iowa that pump and apply approximately 20 billion gallons of manure per year. The areas in which Puck hopes to see improvement include less soil disturbance so when the nutrients are applied they are not as soluble when exposed to water and an improved perception of the industry. He encouraged producers to be good stewards of the land and make manure application selection based not on who is the cheapest or who can get to their farm the fastest but on who can make the best application of the manure.

Heat leads to livestock deaths by Greg Forbes The heat and humidity this summer have taken a toll on Iowa’s livestock producers. Dustin Vande Hoef, communications director for the Iowa Department of Agriculture, explained a week ago, the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association released a rough figure stating 3,500 to 4,000 livestock animals have died due to excessive heat exposure. Dal Grooms, communications director for the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association, said eastern Iowa has experienced a greater number of deaths, losing approximately 3,000 animals. According to Harry Hillaker, Iowa State climatologist, the month of July saw seven days where heat indexes reached an excess of 110 degrees. Hillaker explained that one day of 110 degree heat is usually uncommon in the summer. Overall, the average temperature for the state of Iowa during the month of July was 102 degrees, which is the highest single month average temperature since August of 1983. Vande Hoef stated cattle producers are doing everything in their power to fight the heat by providing extra shade and wetting the cattle periodically. “Right now, the farmers are doing everything they can,” Vande Hoef said. “But it’s so tough when it’s this humid.” The persistent heat and humidity during the night hours do not allow animals time to cool down from an entire day in triple digit temperatures. Vande Hoef believes deaths will decline provided the temperature cools as forecasted over the next weeks. Hillaker offered a word of relief to livestock producers and Iowans alike saying a cold front has moved into the state, which could lead to a permanent cool down for the rest of the summer. Grooms and Vande Hoef encouraged farmers to apply to the Livestock Indemnity Program, which provides a 75 percent return to farmers for each animal lost because of the excessive heat and temperatures this summer. Livestock producers have 30 days following the death of an animal to apply for the Indemnity Program. Applications can be picked up at local FFA offices statewide. See the accompanying article for further information.

Iowa FSA provides livestock assistance for high temperatures Livestock producers who incur eligible livestock death losses due to the recent extreme temperatures and other adverse weather events may be eligible for the USDA Farm Service Agency’s (FSA) Livestock Indemnity Program (LIP). “Extreme temperatures have impacted many of our livestock producers. Those producers who have suffered eligible livestock losses should contact our offices to file a notice of loss.” said John R. Whitaker, State Executive Director for Iowa’s Farm Service Agency. For 2011 calendar year livestock death losses, pro-
ducers must provide a notice of loss on the FSA-914 form the earlier of the following: 30 calendar days of when the loss of livestock was apparent to the producer October 31, 2011 Whitaker added, “Producers who suffered eligible livestock losses due to adverse weather will be required to provide documentation of the livestock lost for the LIP Program. FSA staff can provide producers with a list of acceptable loss documentation.” Adequate documentation must prove the death of eli-
gible livestock occurred as a direct result of an eligible adverse weather event in the calendar year for which benefits are being requested. If adequate proof of death documentation is not available, certifications of livestock deaths by third parties, who are not affiliated with the farming operation, may be accepted. LIP indemnity payments will be based on 75 percent of the fair market value of the livestock as determined by FSA. Producers can contact their local FSA County Offices to sign up for LIP. You can also learn more about LIP by visiting www.fsa.usda.gov.

Northwest Iowa Iowa Soybean Association’s beef facilities Environmental Programs and tour and producer Services recognized with Governor’s training offered A beef facilities tour and Beef Quality Assurance (BQA) training will be offered on Thursday, August 25, in Ida County. Iowa State University (ISU) Extension and Outreach beef program specialist Beth Doran said the tour will feature stops at five facilities before dinner and include the BQA training after the meal. The tour begins at the Alan Friedrichsen farm near Holstein at 2 p.m. and features several types of facilities including wide mono-slope barns, a gable-roofed barn and a semi-confinement barn. Each facility producer will explain how they manage their facilities, cattle and manure. Throughout the tour, specialists from ISU Extension, the Coalition to Support Iowa’s Farmers (CSIF), the Iowa Beef Industry Council (IBIC) and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources will informally share information about animal welfare, building design, environmental regulations and managing manure. The Ida County Cattlemen’s Association, ISU Extension and CSIF are coordinating the tour and BQA training. Due to the sponsorship, the tour, dinner and BQA training is free. However, Doran said participants should call the Ida County Extension Office at 712-364-3003 by August 22 so that meals and materials can be guaranteed. The BQA training will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. following the evening meal. It will be conducted by Matt Deppe, IBIC Director of Industry Relations and the Holstein Veterinary Clinic, and will include a post-mortem examination. This training will allow producers to certify or re-certify in BQA. Directions to the Alan Friedrichsen facility are as follows: from the intersection of Highway 59 and Highway 20 (east of Holstein one mile), go two miles south on Highway 59 to 180th Street and three-quarters of a mile east on 180th Street.
Environmental Excellence Award
The Environmental Programs and Services (EPS) of the Iowa Soybean Association (ISA) was recognized with a Governor’s Environmental Excellence Award at a formal ceremony on August 1 at the Wallace State Office Building in Des Moines. The awards, which were presented personally by Governor Terry Branstad and Lt. Governor Kim Reynolds, are the premier environmental honors in Iowa, recognizing businesses, organizations and citizens who have excelled in environmental sustainability, demonstrating leadership, innovation and comprehensive environmental ethic in managing natural resources. “Iowa is blessed to have some of the best resources in the world and we want to see them maintained for future generations,” said Governor Branstad. “The goal is to protect and enhance our environment and pass it on to future generations better than we found it. Today we recognize leadership and innovation in protecting our natural resources. These awards serve as a small token of appreciation for their commitment to preserve Iowa’s precious natural resources for future generations of Iowans to enjoy.” EPS uses a science-based, data-driven approach to help farmers improve environmental performance while maintaining yields and profitability. Since 2000, ISA has invested well over $3 million in Iowa soybean farmers’ checkoff contributions in this mission, leveraging more than three times that amount in public and private grants and contracts. Fostering partnerships among ag and environmental, public and private groups alike, ISA has pioneered the following innovations: a holistic approach, a watershed approach (providing leadership, technical assistance and coordination in 26 Iowa watersheds), performancebased adaptive management, demonstration of innovative practices and cooperative conservation.

With an environmental team that now includes nine professionals, ISA is unique as a commodity/agricultural association in conducting an operation at this scale solely committed to action-oriented programs and services for improving agriculture’s environmental performance. EPS Advisory Committee Chair Jim Andrew and EPS Director Roger Wolf accepted the award of the EPS staff and the ISA board of directors. Wolf sees the award as recognition of vision demonstrated by ISA’s farmer leaders. “Hopefully, this recognition raises awareness of farmers’ efforts on behalf of the environment. It shows how ISA’s ability to work with many partners and leverage the investment of checkoff dollars has led to success. We still have a lot of work to do.” On behalf of the ISA board of directors, Andrews noted, “This award also recognizes the contributions Roger Wolf and his professional staff have made over the years in addressing soybean farmer’s environmental concerns. It is particularly meaningful in that the award is competitively judged by experts and validates that the Iowa Soybean Association has assumed a critical leadership role in seeking practical, science-based solutions to Iowa’s environmental problems. ISA will continue this quest by expanding its programs and services expand throughout Iowa in the future.” For more information, go to www.iasoybeans.com/environment The Iowa Soybean Association develops policies and programs that help farmers expand profit opportunities while promoting environmentally sensitive production using the soybean checkoff and other resources. The Association is made up of nearly 8,000 farmer members and is governed by an elected volunteer board of 21 farmers.

Iowa Cattlemen’s Association membership numbers surpass 2010 total The Iowa Cattlemen's Association closed its 2011 membership year at 9,475, 43 members higher than the previous year. The success was credited to ICA’s increased involvement in core issues, as well as the work of local members to reach out to fellow cattle producers. “There are many challenges facing the beef cattle industry today from animal welfare to the importance of ethanol. The Iowa Cattlemen's Association has never been more active in protecting the best interests of Iowans and Iowa cattle farmers,” said Anita cattle producer and ICA Membership Chair John Fluit Jr. of Inwood. “Many took note of the efforts and importance of ICA this year. This was reflected in both renewals and the addition of new members.” “Achieving a successful membership year is not done by one person. I’d like to thank all who supported ICA with membership recruiting efforts and behind-thescenes work done this year,” commented ICA President
Ross Havens of Wiota. “I also want to thank each member who paid their membership dues.” Havens noted that “ICA is becoming more focused on providing programs to county associations, and working with county leadership and young members. That’s where we’ll continue to focus,” he said. Of the 97 organized county cattlemen’s associations, 56 met or exceeded their 2010 totals. Three of four regions exceeded their membership totals for 2010 as well. Only the northeast region fell short, and just by 10 memberships. ICA welcomed more than 1,000 new members to the association. The southwest region had the greatest growth by number in this category, bringing in 356 new members. “In order to continue to be a vibrant organization, we need to bring in news members,” said Havens. Ida County surpassed its previous year’s total by at least 25 percent, and Black Hawk County surpassed its previous year’s total by at least 20 percent.
The following counties surpassed their previous year’s total by at least 10 percent: Allamakee, Bremer, Calhoun, Decatur, Guthrie, Harrison, Jasper, O’Brien, Osceola, Shelby, Warren and Washington. The following counties matched or surpassed their previous year’s total membership: Adair, Boone, Buchanan, Buena Vista, Cass, Cerro Gordo, Cherokee, Clarke, Clayton, Clinton, Crawford, Dallas, Delaware, Des Moines, Emmet, Fayette, Fremont, Greene, Grundy, Hardin, Howard, Humboldt, Jefferson, Johnson, Jones, Kossuth, Lee, Linn, Lucas, Mahaska, Marshall, Page, Palo Alto, Pottawattamie, Scott, Sioux, Union, Wayne, Webster, Winnebago-Hancock, Woodbury and Wright. “Membership is the lifeblood of the ICA, not only for policy and priority setting, but also it provides the financial backbone of the organization,” Fluit concluded. Cattle producers who would like to join ICA can contact Trent Wellman at the ICA office at 515-296-2266 or 800-888-1730.

Family-friendly fun easy to find at State Fair
State Fair Construction project creates farm art, helps the hungry Thousands of canned food items and a committed team of volunteers will converge at the Iowa State Fair August 11 through 21 to create a first-of-its-kind exhibit at one of the most popular celebrations of food, fun and agriculture in America. The “Together We CAN! exhibit, presented by the Iowa Food & Family Project (Iowa FFP), will feature the awe-inspiring work of CanstructionŽ, the most unique food charity in the world. Located in the south atrium of the Varied Industries Building and open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily, this exhibit will include larger-than-life replicas of the Iowa State Fair butter cow (in honor of its 100th anniversary), a milk carton, market-size hog and landscape of soybeans and corn fields — all sculpted from thousands of cans of food. Following the fair, all food items used in the exhibit will be donated to the Iowa Food Bank Association (IFBA), benefiting Iowans struggling against hunger. The purpose of the exhibit is to encourage conversations about farming, inspire greater awareness of the commitment of Iowa farmers to providing healthy food for everyone and help people and families struggling with hunger. “While people hold farmers in high re-
gard, they have sincere questions about farming and want to know more about the quality of their food and how it’s produced, says Aaron Putze, director of external relations for the Iowa Soybean Association and coordinator of the Iowa FFP. “Farmers want to listen, engage in the discussion and, most importantly, demonstrate their commitment to continuous improvement. Exhibit visitors can participate in a variety of activities and contests and donate to the IFBA. Actual construction of the display will take place during the first four days of the fair and utilize the assistance of “Celebrity Builders, including Iowa Ag Secretary Bill Northey and Des Moines native Rebecca Meyer, the Season 8 at-home $100,000 winner of NBC’s “The Biggest Loser. Members of Casting Crowns, a Grammy Awardwinning contemporary Christian rock band, will also lend a hand during a guest appearance August 11 prior to their grandstand performance. Sponsors of “Together We CAN! include the Iowa Soybean Association, Midwest Dairy Association, Iowa Pork Producers Association, Hy-Vee, Syngenta, Iowa State Fair, Iowa Food Bank Association and United Soybean Board.
Family-friendly fun will be even easier to find at the Iowa State Fair – August 11 through 21 - with the debut of the new Kids' Zone. Located north of the Animal Learning Center, Kids' Zone will include the Blue Ribbon Kids' Club Tent, Extreme Canines Stunt Dog Show, Little Hands on the Farm, Butterfly House and Stroller and SecuraPAL rental. In addition, Kids' Zone will be home to foods and games designed for the young Fairgoer. Offering even more room for thrills, a new entertainment venue will debut west of the Jacobson Exhibition Center. The Fearless Flores Thrill Show will display breath-taking stunts and spectacular skills and Swampmaster Jeff Quattrocchi and his band of playful alligators will offer their own breed of jawdropping entertainment. To celebrate the 100th birthday of the Butter Cow, the fair is unveiling the Battle of the Butter. Contestants will create a dairy masterpiece from a 50-pound block of butter, and the winning sculpture daily will be featured alongside the world-famous Butter Cow. Catch the sculpting action each day at 4 p.m. on the Anne and Bill Riley Stage. Ides transition open feedlot to hoop buildings by Jason Johnson, public affairs specialist, USDA-NRCS When Chad Ide added dairy cows to diversify his family’s feeder cattle business, it set off a chain of events that led to the construction of two new 12,600 square foot hoop buildings on their Union County farm. The initial cost of installing the buildings is already being offset by healthier livestock, better manure utilization and the elimination of manure runoff. Chad’s father, Monty, said an open feedlot sat on the family farm his entire life and expanded throughout the years. But when Chad began feeding Holstein dairy cows, it changed the complexity of

They built two smaller cattle barns a few years ago to feed young calves, and their neighbors own larger total containment buildings. “When we decided to transition from the open feedlot to covered buildings, we looked at several options,” said Monty. “We attended some field days throughout southern Iowa and Chad took tours in Story and Ringgold Counties, as well. We did our research.”
The Ides decided on two hoop buildings, and livestock moved into their new covered homes in October and November of 2010. They were constructed on top of and adjacent to their open feedlots. Covered feedlots, such as hoop buildings and monoslope barns, are designed to provide a suitable environment for growth, and aid in animal handling, manure management, feeding and ventilation. They eliminate the need for sediment basins, or holding ponds, reducing odor and potential groundwater contamination. Hoop buildings are typically longer and narrower than other roofed feeding
The Ides like how air flows freely throughout the hoop buildings in the summertime.

options, like monoslope buildings. The Ides’ hoop buildings are 42’ x 300’. They include a rounded canvas top with retractable sides to allow airflow. “The hoop buildings stay warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer,” said Monty. “Earlier this summer we had a few 90 degree days and it felt cool in there. There was never a calf panting and they never backed off feed.” These comfortable conditions are, so far, leading to healthy, happy cows. Monty stated dairy cows are susceptible to pneumonia, but they haven’t treated any of them for that type of illness. After one full winter in cover, he said mortality rates are
way down. “We have only lost one since we moved them into the hoop buildings,” he stated. It might be a little early to gage their overall weight gain performance, since it was less than a year when they moved into the hoop buildings, but Monty reports that they are doing well. Something that hasn’t been difficult to assess is improved manure availability in covered buildings, compared to open feedlots. The Ides grow corn and soybeans on an adjacent 500-acre field. They no longer need to use other sources of manure to fertilize that field. Covered feedlots almost always include a concrete
floor that can easily be scraped weekly. “It’s a lot better quality manure than what we were getting out of the lots,” said Chad. “It’s pure manure – there’s no rainwater or dirt mixed in.” “I thought we were scraping our [open] lots and doing pretty well,” said Monty, “but we weren’t getting a fraction of the manure we could have. Now we are finding out how much manure cattle actually put out.” After scraping, the manure is stored on a concrete manure storage area at one end of each of the Ides’ hoop buildings. The Ides bale their cornstalks to use for bedding in the hoop building. They will use about one bale per
head per year. They have about 300 head in each building. “We used more than one bale per head in the later winter and early spring and less than that throughout the winter,” said Monty. USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) provided financial and technical assistance to the Ides for the cost and design of their new hoop structures. NRCS can offer financial assistance on a per animal unit basis through the Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP). For solid manure confined systems that replace existing open feedlots, NRCS offers payment rates of more than $200 per ani-
mal unit through EQIP. EQIP is a voluntary conservation program that promotes agricultural production and environmental quality. Practices such as grassed waterways, terraces, prescribed grazing, and even tree plantings may be eligible for financial assistance through EQIP. To help the Ides apply the appropriate amount of manure nutrients to cropland, NRCS required them to apply a Comprehensive Nutrient Management Plan (CNMP) for their entire operation. A CNMP addresses the management and treatment necessary for the operator to protect soil and water resources. The cost of the CNMP can also be
offset by funding through EQIP. The Ides are receiving additional funds through the Conservation Stewardship Program (CSP), which rewards ag and forestry producers for their past conservation work, but also requires them to improve and maintain existing systems and to undertake additional conservation activities. Through CSP, NRCS makes an annual payment over five years. For more information about transitioning from an open feedlot to a covered livestock building, or to learn more about NRCS’ free technical assistance, visit a local NRCS field office or go online, www.ia.nrcs.usda.gov.

Iowans of the Day selected for Iowa State Fair
Farm Progress Show tickets available online
The Iowa State Fair Blue Ribbon Foundation and Cookies Food Products have announced the recipients of the Iowan of the Day award for the 2011 Iowa State Fair. Each Iowan of the Day receives VIP treatment on their respective day, starting with recognition on the Anne & Bill Riley Stage at 2:30 p.m., the use of the Iowan of the Day golf cart, gate admission and grandstand tickets, VIP parking, $200 cash and accommodations at the Downtown Des Moines Marriott. The Blue Ribbon Foundation began the Iowan of the Day award in 1997 to honor those Iowans who have truly made a difference in their communities. This year, the judges reviewed hundreds of nominations selecting those that show examples of integrity, Iowa pride, hard work and dedication. The 2011 Iowan of the Day recipients are: Louise Unkrich of Swedesburg Robert Smith of Sidney Pauline Flamme of Gladbrook Julie Beitelspacher of LeMars John Rains of Urbandale Ruby Bentley of Macedonia Milton Menefee of Denver Mickey Thomas of Osceola Bill Forbes of Correctionville Leo Chisholm of Osage
Visitors to the Farm Progress Show, scheduled August 30 and 31 and September 1 west of Decatur, Illinois, can purchase their adult admission tickets in advance of the show by using the online ticket purchasing site. “This is the fourth year we have been able to offer advance tickets for purchase online, said Matt Jungmann, national events manager. “Our permanent show sites give us more reliable services like Internet access that make handling the advance tickets at the gates possible. Visitors can go to www.FarmProgressShow.com and click on the tickets button for the easy-to-use advance ticket purchase. Three options will then be presented: 1) Enter a subscriber number, 2) Provide farm profile information, or 3) Purchase tickets without providing information. The first two options offer a discount on the ticket price making it only $9. Without the discount, adult tickets are $12. Once visitors have purchased their tickets, an email with the ticket will be sent to them. Visitors then need to print out the ticket and bring it with them to the Farm Progress Show. The ticket contains a unique bar code that will be scanned at the gates. Using tickets purchased online at the show is fast and easy. Just look for the signs pointing to “Online Tickets
Quick Pass Lane. Tickets will then be scanned and visitors can enjoy their day at the Farm Progress Show. “Prior to launching this program, we did a lot of testing to make sure the system is easy to use and understand, said Jungmann. “We foresee an increase in visitors purchasing their tickets online. It really does make their entry into the show faster and easier. Advance tickets will be available for online purchasing from now until Thursday, September 1. The Farm Progress Show will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday, August 30 and 31, and from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursday, September 1. For a full schedule of events and more detailed information, visit www.FarmProgressShow.com. The Farm Progress Show, the nation's largest outdoor farm event, annually hosts more than 500 exhibitors displaying new farm equipment, tractors, combines and farm implements; seed and crop protection products; and many additional farm supplies and services. Following Wednesday’s show day, August 31, country music star Rodney Atkins will perform live in concert. The concert is a separate event and not included in show admission tickets. Concert tickets may be purchased in advance on the show website for $15 or at the gate for $25.
