Iowa cropland rent increases Cash rent up an average $ of 20 per acre Grain prices, availability of land drives rise, says Extension economist by Gordon Wolf Although cash rent for non-irrigated cropland in Iowa increased by an average of $20 statewide from 2010 to 2011, the current estimate of the rent divided by land values is the lowest it has ever been, according to Dr. Michael D. Duffy, an Iowa State University Extension economist in farm management and director of the Iowa State Beginning Farmer Center. Dr. Duffy told the Iowa Farm & Ranch in an email that part of the reason the rent compared to cropland value is low is because rent has not increased much or as quickly as land values. “This is changing,” he stated. According to information released by the
USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS), cash rent paid for non-irrigated cropland in Iowa averaged $176 per acre in 2010 and $196 per acre in 2011. The report stated that 31 counties had nonirrigated cropland cash rents of $200 per acre or more in 2011. Just two counties topped that threshold in 2010. The district in Iowa with the highest average cash rent for non-irrigated cropland is the central district at $211 per acre. Eight of the 12 counties in that district have estimated cash rents of $200 or more. Hamilton and Grundy, the two counties with the highest and second highest cash rents at $235 and $234, respectively, are in the central district. The district with the lowest estimated cash rent for non-irrigated cropland is the south central district at $157 per acre.

RENT, from Page 1 The NASS report also said that cash rent paid for pasture land in Iowa increased by an average of $6, from $40 in 2010 to $46 per acre in 2011. The southwest district averaged the highest cash rent for pasture land at $57 per acre, followed closely by the west central district at $55 per acre. The south central district at $38 per acre and the northeast district at $38.50 per acre saw the lowest average cash rents for pasture land. Dr. Duffy, who is responsible for the annual land value survey, cost of crop production estimates and the Iowa farm costs and returns publication, listed a couple reasons why cash rents increased. “One is the increased land values. Values are tied directly to the price of grain, he stated. Dr. Duffy continued, “Another reason for rent increases is the demand for land. Many farmers need more land but they can’t afford to buy it or can’t find any for sale. Renting is their only option.

The Iowa Soybean Association conducted its board elections at the September 8 meeting. Dean Coleman from Humboldt took his seat as president with Mark Jackson of Rose Hill as president-elect. Tom Oswald of Cleghorn was elected treasurer and Wayne Fredericks of Osage of was chosen as secretary. Brian Kemp of Sibley was also elected to the executive committee. Coleman said the board did a great job selecting the executive committee. “They bring varying talents and levels of experience that will cause great discussions as we work on projects and areas of concern, Coleman stated. “I’m looking forward to this coming year as we see record prices and the need to use producer dollars in an ever more prudent manner. STATEWIDE IOWA FARM & RANCH
City kids and country kids My husband is five years older than I am, which normally wouldn’t be a huge difference. However, his birth year puts him at the end of the Baby Boomers, and mine puts me at the beginning of the Generation X’ers. Using technology is one of the many ways in which we diverge. He didn’t use a computer regularly until after we were married. I have grown up with computers; my high school was one of the first in the state to have a computer lab. I use my computers for almost everything; most of my records are electronic. I even have a smart phone that I use to keep my schedule straight. He uses computers mainly for bookkeeping, sending email, and looking at farm news on the internet. I catch onto new programs quite easily. My husband still needs coaching on sending an attachment with his email. Of course, this drives our children crazy, as they are also growing up with computers. When my 13-year-
old asked if dad was ever going to embrace technology, I told him probably not because his brain isn’t wired that way. And just for fun, I reminded him that his dad was in the same generation as his grandparents. The cringe on his face was priceless! The same “brain wiring” differences apply to city kids and country kids. I grew up in town; my husband grew up in the country. City people think differently then county people. Groceries. The first couple years after we moved to the country, I had to get out of the habit of thinking that if I didn’t have something for a recipe, I could just run to the grocery store. This is not advisable when the grocery store is a 15 minute drive. I’ve learned to substitute ingredients, and think about what I’m making for supper before I leave town after I get off work. I also keep extra staples in the house to prevent running out of something. Getting down to a half

gallon of milk is cause to get another gallon instead of waiting until the first one runs out. Having extra frozen meat that you can use is also a special bonus. Sports and extra curricular activities are also different for city kids and country kids. I took for granted growing up that I could do any extra activities I wanted because I lived eight blocks away from the school. My oldest son is running with the cross country team this year, and my youngest is playing flag football for the first time. Instead of going straight home, I now wait until the big kid is done running. I have learned to keep reading material in the vehicle for such purpose. The little kid always has a book now because he knows we’ll have to wait a little bit. The little kid’s practice starts at 6 p.m. a couple days a week. On his practice days, we bring his practice clothes and equipment in the morning and he changes in the car. Once we throw into the
THE
FARMER’S WIFE By Christy Welch schedule Scouts, 4-H, and our church’s youth group, the boys and I sometimes don’t see the house for 12 or 13 hours. As a city kid in high school, though, I didn’t see home from 7 a.m. until around midnight on Friday’s football game nights. Next year, the big kid will be in high school, and I’m sure we’ll be adding more activities. When he first started mid-
dle school and wanted to try various extracurricular activities, I called my family to see at what point I could use the fact that we live in the country as an excuse to not let the kids do something. Their response was, “Never.” That’s what I thought. We probably came to this conclusion as we listened to our dad whine about not being able to play football or go to football games because they were farmers. “I’d sit on the tractor, and I could see the lights of the football field,” he’d say. I think my husband was able to go to games because he was in the marching band, so we try to take the kids to one or two games a year. I’m sure we’ll go to more as they go through high school, but for now our schedule is already overwhelming some days. The one thing I have learned with all my activities is to be organized and to think ahead, which I hope is something my boys are learning. Or at least to stick their schedule on a smart phone.

Corn Caucus Project keeps growers informed during 2012 campaign Focus on September as Corn Month in Iowa In an election year, the nation turns its attention to Iowa. Since 1972, the Iowa caucuses have been the first major electoral event of the nominating process for President of the United States. Although only about one percent of the nation’s delegates are chosen by Iowa, the Iowa caucuses have served as an early indication of the potential winning nomination. “The Corn Caucus Project’s purpose is to keep corn growers informed and engaged in the 2012 presidential campaign” said Bruce Rohwer, a corn farmer from Paullina and the chairperson for the Iowa Corn Growers Association Political Action Committee. “The primary goal of this program is to contact all campaigns to discuss corn policies and form a relationship with the campaigns, so that they consider and incorporate corn policy positions
into their respective campaigns.” The Corn Caucus Project, launched as a joint project with the National Corn Growers Association, has support from Minnesota, Nebraska, Illinois and Iowa Corn Growers Associations. National Corn Growers Association, and all its member corn states is working
throughout the fall in the lead up to the February 6, 2012, Iowa Caucus, to keep corn growers informed and engaged in the 2012 presidential campaign. The primary goal of the program is to contact campaigns to discuss corn policies and provide a point of contact, so that they consider and incorporate corn
policy positions into their respective campaigns. These policies include the Renewable Fuel Standard, infrastructure for blender pumps, crop insurance and the Average Crop Revenue Program (ACRE), free trade agreements, burdensome Environmental Protection Agency regulations, and funding for lock and dam infrastructure. A secondary goal is to evaluate candidate positions on corn policy issues, and publicize these positions to our members, NCGA members, other agricultural groups, and the media prior to the Iowa Caucuses in February 2012. The current survey is being completed by candidates and will be posted on www.iowacorn.org/corncaucusproject by mid November. Overall, the project includes: a policy survey for candidates, media tracking, and communication with campaigns on policy positions and priorities, and oneon-one corn grower involvement in campaigns including volunteering and attending candidate events. The presidential caucus project does not provide an endorsement of any candidate.

Taiwan feed millers, U.S. Grains Council sign joint letter outlining purchase plans Value of corn purchase commitment estimated at $2.47 to $3.39 billion Leaders from Taiwan’s Feed Industry Association (TFIA) signed a formal letter of intent September 20 announcing plans to purchase from 7.7 million metric tons to as much as 10.5 million tons (303-413 million bushels) of U.S. corn and a half to three-quarters of a million tons of corn co-products such as distillers dried grains and corn gluten in 2012 and 2013. “For U.S. farmers, Taiwan is a long-established and deeply valued customer and partner,” said U.S. Grains Council Past Chairman Terry Vinduska, who signed the letter on behalf of the Council at a formal ceremony in the U.S. Capitol. “Taiwan is the sixth-largest export market for U.S. agriculture, and our fifth-largest corn market,” he noted. “This letter of intent is the latest in Taiwan’s unique tra-

dition of goodwill missions to announce its plans. It represents a promise of more than 300 million, maybe as much as 400 million bushels of corn exports.” The value of the Taiwanese corn purchase commitment is estimated to total from $2.47 to as much as $3.39 billion. TFIA Chairman Yau-Kuen Hung represented the Taiwanese association. The delegation, which also included representatives from Taiwan’s oilseed processing association and flour millers’ association, signed similar letters outlining their intent to purchase 3 to 3.2 million tons (110-118 million bushels) of U.S. soybeans and 1.7 million tons (62 million bushels) of U.S. wheat. After formal visits in Washington, the delegation will travel to Virginia, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin and Iowa for meetings with producer groups and state officials. Taiwan, with the second-highest per capita consumption of U.S. agricultural products in the world, imported 2.4 million tons (94 million bushels) of U.S. corn in the 2010/2011 market year.
When corn harvesting conditions allow optimal time for in-field drying, taking full advantage can reduce onfarm energy consumption. A new publication from Iowa State University Extension and Outreach explains the basic principles of energy management for grain drying. “Improving Corn Drying Efficiency” (PM 2089Q) is available to download from the Extension Online Store, https://store.extension.iastate.edu/. This publication explains corn moisture content, plant physiology and the fundamental principles of drying corn following harvest. Topics include in-field drying, considerations for selecting earlier maturing hybrids and recommendations for holding corn “wet and cold” through the winter. When conditions allow, implementing some or all of these techniques can help growers reduce fuel bills for grain drying. “Both over-drying and under-drying corn can lead to wasted energy and lost grain quality,” said Shawn Shouse, ISU Extension agricultural engineer. “Consider options to reduce your drying needs and manage your drying system closely during changing weather and grain conditions to reduce energy use and maintain grain quality.” For more tips on energy efficiency around the farmstead, visit http://farmenergy.exnet.iastate.edu or follow @ISU_Farm_Energy on Twitter. The Farm Energy publications are part of a series of farm energy conservation and efficiency educational materials being developed through the ISU Farm Energy Initiative. The purpose is to increase farmers’ awareness of opportunities for improving efficient use of farm energy. The initiative also will help farmers and utility providers to explore opportunities to reduce farm energy demand and to improve overall profitability in a rapidly changing energy environment.

Applications must be postmarked by October 14. The Iowa Corn Collegiate Advisory Team assists the Iowa Corn Growers Association (ICGA) and the Iowa Corn Promotion Board (ICPB) in developing programs that target and enhance Iowa Corn’s relationship with those individuals who are pursuing careers in agricultural production and allied industries. “The first year of the Iowa Corn Collegiate Advisory Team was very successful and we are excited to again be offering this program,” said Bob Hemesath, an ICGA director and chair of the committee that oversees the program. “This group will help Iowa Corn develop programs that are important to students who are transitioning to be the Iowa corn and agriculture industries.” The Iowa Corn Collegiate Advisory Team is made up of students pursing degrees related to agriculture at Iowa’s colleges and universities. The team will include one representative from each community college agricultural program, one each from Dordt College and Graceland University, and five students from Iowa State University’s Agriculture and Life Sciences College. Iowa Corn and Pork host Japanese buyers’ team A team of eight Japanese pork buyers recently visited two U.S. pork processing plants as well as retail outlets to reaffirm the sister-state relationship between the State of Iowa and the Japanese prefecture of Yamanashi. The buyer trip was funded through the Iowa Corn Growers Association and the Iowa Pork Producers Association. “Iowa Corn was very excited and proud to be one of the sponsors of this Japanese buyer team,” said Kevin Ross, a farmer from Minden and president of the Iowa Corn Growers Association. “Participating in this program allowed us to show support to one of corn’s top customers and also demonstrate that we are committed to their continued economic contribution to Iowa.” “Teams like this are an excellent tool for building relationships between the leading buyers in Japan and U.S. suppliers,” said Takemichi Yamashoji, USMEF senior marking director, who accompanied the team to the U.S. The visiting team toured several pork production and retail facilities to broaden their familiarity with U.S. pork products and production practices. The team represents a number of divisions of Ito Chu Corporation, a Fortune 500 company in Japan that is a large-scale purchaser of U.S. pork through subsidiaries including Prima Meat Packers, Icrest US and Soei Foods.

Honey Creek Creamery is a tourist Friends meld love of goats into business Story and photos by Bruce A. Binning Several years ago, through a mutual friend, Janna Feldman and Sharon Oamek met. They were introduced because of their love of goats, and as fate would have it, they only lived five miles from each other. Each had a dream to start a goat dairy, where they could create artisanal fresh goat cheese, or “chevre” to serve a local market. In August 2010, the Honey Creek Creamery was born. Jana and Sharon’s herds are a combination of Alpine, Nubian and Saanen goats. Honey Creek Creamery is the only certified goat dairy west of Des Moines. The Oamek farm, located on Old Lincoln Highway near Honey Creek in the scenic Loess Hills, is home to the creamery. On this family farm, founded in 1891, the women renovated a 100-year-old bunkhouse to accommodate their processing plant and milking parlor. The co-proprietors collect the goat milk at their respective farms and pool it in a bulk tank at the plant. The milk is turned into several flavors of chevre, including dill, cranberry horseradish and basil. Their chevre products can be found at farmers’ markets and local festivals in the summer, as well as the HyVee at Madison Avenue and Broadway and Council Bluffs. For more information or to arrange a tour, call 402594-5111 or go to honeycreekcreamery.com.
Above: Janna Feldman (center), co-owner of the Honey Creek Creamery in the Loess Hills, shows the fresh cheese product, chevre, to visitors taking a tour. Right: A fun experience for visitors, besides eating the flavored cheese, is a chance to milk a goat, which is what Ethan Carlyle, Denison, did.

Iowa Corn partners with ISU, U of I for Cy-Hawk series Promotion includes Toyota Tundra give-away The Iowa Corn Growers Association and The Iowa Corn Promotion Board (Iowa Corn) experienced one of the most exciting football games in Cy-Hawk history when the Iowa State Cyclones beat the Iowa Hawkeyes in three overtimes on September 10. It marked the first football game of Iowa Corn’s sponsorship of the Cy-Hawk Series. Earlier this year, Iowa Corn announced its partnership with Learfield Sports on behalf of both the Iowa State University and University of Iowa Athletic Departments as the title sponsor of the Cy-Hawk Series, the annual competition between the Cyclone and Hawkeye Athletic Departments. The Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series tracks the head-tohead match-ups in each sport with each victory earning points toward the overall series championship. The series also will continue to recognize outstanding academic achievement by the school’s student-athletes. The Cy-Hawk sponsorship allows Iowa Corn to promote corn ethanol as one of the more than 4,000 products made from corn, as well as tell consumers about the importance of corn to the state’s economy through a multi-media platform of radio, television, signage, print and digital media. In addition, Iowa Corn is giving away a flexfuel Toyota Tundra as part of the Cy-Hawk promotions. “We are involved in the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series because whether you are a Cyclone or a Hawkeye, you are from Iowa and corn plays an important role in this state,” said Craig Floss, CEO for Iowa Corn. “Iowa is the top corn producing state, the top ethanol producing state and the corn industry is critical to the economy, jobs and all Iowans. This series is the perfect fit for Iowa Corn and our farmers from across the state”. The Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series promotional campaign, launched this fall, includes television and radio advertisements featuring Iowa corn growers and head coaches from both Iowa State and Iowa Athletic Departments. For more information on winning the flex-fuel Toyota Tundra or other exciting Cy-Hawk events, go to www.iowacorncyhawkseries.com.
