USDA’s crop estimate raises average corn yield, soybeans unchanged from October forecast The USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) most recent crop production report stated that, as of November 1, Iowa’s 2011 corn for grain yield was forecast at 171 bushels per acre, up two bushels per acre from the October 1 estimate. Production is forecast at 2.33 billion bushels for Iowa, up eight percent from 2010. As of October 30, 87 percent of corn acres had been harvested, 19 days ahead of the five-year average. The November 1 soybean yield forecast of 50.5 bushels per acre is unchanged from the October 1 forecast but is down half a bushel per acre from 2010. Soybean production is forecast at 468 million bushels, down six percent from last year.

As of October 30, soybean acres harvested were 98 percent, two weeks ahead of the average pace. In Iowa, corn acres were estimated at 13,640,000 in 2011, up from 13,050,000 in 2010. Soybeans acres are estimated at 9,260,000 for 2011, down from 9,730,000 in 2010. Corn production for the United States is forecast as 12.3 billion bushels, down one percent from the October forecast and down one percent from 2010. The report said if the forecast holds true, it will be the fourth largest production total on record for the United States. Based on conditions as of November 1, yields are expected to average 146.7 bushels per acre, down 1.4 bushels per acre from the October forecast and down 6.1 bushels per acre from 2010.

If the forecast holds true, it will be the lowest average yield since 2003. Area harvested for grain is forecast at 83.9 million acres, unchanged from the October forecast. The NASS report continued that soybean production in the United States is forecast at 3.05 billon bushels, down slightly from the October forecast and down nine percent from 2010. Based on the November 1 conditions, yields are expected to average 41.3 bushels per acre, down 0.2 bushels per acre from last month’s forecast and down 2.2 bushels per acre from last year. If realized, the average yield will be the second lowest since 2003. Area for harvest is forecast at 73.7 million acres, unchanged from October but down four percent from 2010.

ISA officials Women in Denim present 2012 conference in Storm comment Lake January 27-28 on USDA soybean crop report Regarding the yields forecast by the USDA, Iowa Soybean Association President Dean Coleman, a soybean farmer from Humboldt, stated, “The drop in overall U.S. soybean production reflects the drought in the South. In much of Iowa, we saw pretty good yields, especially considering that we lost some volume to low moisture content. I harvested soybeans that were drier than I’ve ever seen before.” He added, “Now that we are getting a firmer number on production, we will be looking at usage and exports, watching to see if China and our other export customers will step back into this market and buy more soybeans.” ISA Director of Market Development Grant Kimberley agreed that exports are fluid and the world situation will be important to watch. “Though Europe is not a demand driver for soybeans, the current mess in Europe may affect the value of the dollar. Though stocks are projected to be higher, if prices drop, we expect China will most likely step in and buy,” Kimberley says. Both Coleman and Kimberley said the ratio in corn and soybean prices will be important to watch this winter, if soybeans are to maintain acres.

by Emma Kirk Women in Denim, an annual conference started in 2005 dedicated to women in agriculture, is set for January 27 and 28, 2012. The event will take place at Buena Vista University in Storm Lake. Organizer Kelli Berg explained, “Women in Denim is a conference geared toward women working on the farm.” Workshops presented at the conference will include general information about farming, marketing, financial strategies, wellness consultants, and “fun things” such as gardening and sewing, Berg continued. The conference is dedicated to providing an opportunity for women to learn about agricultural opportunities, to networking with others, and to promote "Fun and Enthusiasm for Agriculture". The keynote speaker will be Gale Mote advocating that each individual “throw yourself into life” and “create positive ripples.” She will speak about the power of choice, confidence, character, commitment, and contri-

Grandpas and projects By the time you read this, my husband will hopefully be done with harvest. On Monday, he said he had 30 acres left but with just one person during the day, it’s slow going. Saturday is our 17th wedding anniversary. Of those 17 years, he’s been finished with harvest by our anniversary all but one year. That happened a couple years ago when many farmers still had corn in their fields, surrounded by snowdrifts that reached the ears of corn! My dad came down to help a couple weeks ago, then again last weekend. He drives the catch wagon, which he loves, after many years of working at an agricenter going full throttle during the fall and spring. His only job is to catch the grain from my husband in the combine, and transfer it to the grain trucks. It’s an easy job, he says, without a lot of thought, which he enjoys. This is a complete and total reversal of how he

was when we were growing up, in the “less than laid back years. Those were the years that, if we couldn’t immediately say what we wanted in the drive thru, he wouldn’t order anything for us. (Mom, of course, made him go back around for our food.) Or the time we went through the San Diego Zoo on a vacation and saw everything ... in two hours. I’m not saying he was a bad dad, just always busy! You know those energizer bunnies that keep going, and going, and going ... that’s him. I can’t really remember him ever sitting still when my sisters and I were growing up. I do think, however, that he’s been spending way too much time with my husband and children, as they have picked up some of his habits. My husband has somehow morphed into a younger, more hairy version of my father. My 9-year-old son goes around the house repeat-

ing my dad’s favorite phrases: “Get after it! “Get ‘er done! “Make it happen! Yeah, all I need is a little 9-year-old version of my father ... and a 47 year old version too. I’ve seen the 40’s version of dad, and it wasn’t cool. My mom always said that if they had boys, they would have killed him. Let me tell you, as girls, we were close a few times. Too much energy! “They always say you marry someone similar to your father. I didn’t. After 25 years of the crazy, I wanted less crazy. Except being a hard worker, my husband was nothing like my father. All that has changed! Now, my husband is hardly ever sitting still and has developed the same stupid sense of humor. The boys have it too. I sometimes think I’m the only sane one in the house, unless I count the dogs. The new puppy is adapting well to life on the farm.

THE

FARMER’S WIFE By Christy Welch The old dog has adopted him, and disciplines him just like a mom would do. Since it’s getting colder, and the puppy (and our old dog) refuse to use the dog house, my sons and I rigged up a nice, warm spot under the deck for the puppy with straw bales and plywood. It was a huge project, and required several trips

with the four-wheeler from the barn to the house with bales stuck on the front and back of the vehicle. This is not something that we’ll be doing every year. So, I think my son will have to make a new doghouse as a 4-H project this year. He already has volunteered to make storage boxes for our Cub Scout Pack’s new pinewood derby track, with grandpa’s help of course. It will probably end up being a citizenship project. More time, they’re spending together! Speaking of 4-H, if you’re not involved with a 4-H club and don’t have kids at home, this time of year is the perfect opportunity to volunteer at your local extension office. If you’re talented at something, and have free time during the winter, why not volunteer to have some project days with local 4-H’ers. We did two last year and had a great time with around a dozen kids. Take the opportunity to influence the next generation ... for the better.

Letter to the Editor

Farmers, landowners should stipulate no lead ammo or tackle All farmers and landowners who are giving permission for hunting and fishing on their property this season should be aware that spent lead ammo and lead fishing tackle pose a potential source of contamination of the soil, aquifer, surface water and future crops. This contamination might in the future lead to taking acres out of production or an expensive clean up before re-zoning and subdividing if that is your goal. Costly for the kids and grandchildren. Studies have shown contaminated soil will yield lead concentrations in certain crops. The relationship between lead contamination and cancer is still being studied. Lead is banned in gasoline and paint and many other products in the United States. When farmers and landowners give permission for hunting/fishing on their land they should be able to stipulate No Lead Please! There are good alternatives to lead ammo and lead tackle. Steel and copper alternatives are readily available. Farmers feed us and take care of the precious land. It is hard work. They should be able to say what takes place on their own property. Thanks to our farmers for all they do! Patricia C. Haines, West Des Moines

Veterans are focus of ISU’s Beginning Farmer Center’s new partnership Returning veterans who want to pursue farming and agricultural careers will find a growing resource in Iowa through a new, nationwide program. The Beginning Farmer Center, part of Iowa State University's Extension and Outreach program, has worked to match potential farmers with retiring farmers since 1994. Now the center is beginning to work with the new, national California-based Farmer Veteran Coalition that works with Iraq and Afghanistan war veterans who want a career in agriculture. The coalition then matches them with farmers who are transitioning out of the field. David Baker, farm transition specialist for the Beginning Farmer Center, has matched veterans with farmers before, but this is the first time that he has worked with a group that is specifically targeting the group. "If I see a chance to help those who have worked so hard for us, then I'm going to do that," said Baker. Baker, a veteran of six years in the Air Force, knows that transitioning to civilian life has challenges. "The next generation is very important to me and the communities I work with," he said. The Farmer Veteran Coalition is in the beginning stages of collecting names of veterans and farmers. Baker thinks the center can help the coalition with

some of the infrastructure and processes that it takes to be successful. "We are offering to help the coalition design its own database, or possibly use us as central administrator of that database," said Baker of the new working relationship. Currently, ISU's center already administers a multistate database that they use for all farmers. Baker says that they may have to begin a separate listing for future farmers who are veterans, but that would be an easy adjustment. "We think we can assist them with a nationwide matching system," said Baker. "Iowa's system is probably the most active in the country. In fact, other states have copied what we are doing." Iowa has names of nearly 500 potential farmers from around the country and the world who are hoping to get matched with an established farmer. Baker says that if they start to manage a national database for veterans, that number may increase quickly and dramatically. Since 10 percent of the Beginning Farmer Center's current placements are veterans, Baker says the group is a good fit for a life in agriculture. "There's no doubt that they are among the most highly disciplined people out there, and the hardest working. I know they are not afraid to get their hands dirty."

Cerro Gordo, Howard, Johnson, Webster Counties add 4-H history online Cerro Gordo, Howard, Johnson and Webster counties have added their 4-H history to Iowa 4-H History by County, a new blog detailing the history of Iowa State University Extension 4-H Youth Development. The history blog is a partnership of the Iowa 4-H program and the Iowa 4-H Foundation. The online history notes that Cerro Gordo started 4H club work in 1917 when six boys showed baby beef projects at the North Iowa Fair. By 1923, the baby beef club was officially organized with 14 members. Girls clubs in Howard County during the 1920s learned about garment construction, parliamentary procedure, health, music appreciation and recreation. Johnson County 4-H records before 1929 were destroyed in a fire. By 1929 early 4-H boys clubs were neighborhood based, emphasizing gardens, beef, swine and dairy. Early girls clubs were closer-knit organizations, focusing on one main project area that rotated yearly. Starting in 1917 in Webster County, 4-H clubs would organize, set goals and work on a project until the goal was met. The club would disband until another need was identified, and then reorganize to pursue a new goal. View the full histories of these and other counties on the blog, at www.iowa4hfoundation.org/4hhistory. Over the next two years, 4-H staff and volunteers will be reviewing additional county 4-H histories, with two

to four being published on the blog each month, said Shelly Greving, marketing director for the Iowa 4-H Foundation. The idea that led to the blog took root 10 years ago during Iowa 4-H’s centennial year, when several 4-H volunteers and ISU Extension staff members started talking about writing an illustrated history of 4-H in Iowa, Greving explained. Those early discussions resulted in “A 4-H Story: Helping Hands, Caring Hearts”

(4H 4805), an illustrated 4-H ABC book for children. The book is available from the ISU Extension Online Store, store.extension.iastate.edu/. County celebrations during the 4-H centennial, as well as ISU Extension’s centennial in 2003, resulted in the gathering of numerous pictures, record books and memorabilia. Florine Swanson, retired Iowa 4-H Foundation executive director, led the online history project as counties compiled their history and submitted it to the review committee to be published on the site, Greving said. “All these efforts have resulted in what now will be a living history of 4-H. We hope 4-H members, alumni, volunteers, leaders and staff will add their comments and continue the history of 4-H, sharing the many facets of each county’s 4-H program,” Greving said. “Individuals may choose to continue the legacy of 4-H by making a donation to directly impact Iowa 4-H or their county 4-H program.” Those who wish to support 4-H in their county may make a donation to their county 4-H endowment through the Iowa 4-H Foundation, www.iowa4hfoundation.org/. "Today’s 4-H youth develop citizenship, communication and leadership skills; and learn about everything from aerospace to zoology,” said Chuck Morris, director of ISU Extension 4-H Youth Development. To learn more about 4-H, contact any ISU Extension county office or check the 4-H website, www.extension. iastate.edu/4h/.

U.S. pork a winner in free trade agreements by Gordon Wolf The United States is on the brink of further expanding trade with Korea, Colombia and Panama through trade promotion agreements. President Barack Obama signed the agreements into law on October 21. The agreements now await approval by the governments in Korea, Colombia and Panama. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said the agreements will support tens of thousands of jobs here at home, put unemployed Americans back to work and open new opportunities for American businesses. “For America's farmers and ranchers, the trade agreements are an opportunity to strengthen U.S. agriculture, already a bright spot in our economy,” Vilsack stated in a release. "Farm exports help support more than one million American jobs. This year and next, U.S. agricultural exports are on track to reach new highs, leading to a trade surplus of over $42 billion, eight times greater than five years ago. When implemented, these three agreements will increase farm exports by an additional $2.3 billion - supporting nearly 20,000 American jobs - by eliminating tariffs, removing barriers to trade and leveling the playing field for U.S. producers. Overall, these agreements are a win for the American economy—they mean higher incomes for farmers and ranchers, more opportunities for small businesses owners, and jobs for folks who package, ship, and market agricultural products." Professor Dermot J. Hayes, Pioneer Chair in Agribusiness at Iowa State University in Ames, has been studying how the agreements would affect the pork industry in the United States. For the U.S. Korea Trade Agreement, the tariff on all frozen pork except for frozen shoulders, will be lifted by 2015. The tariff on frozen shoulders will be lifted in 2016. The tariff on fresh pork will be lifted10 years after the trade agreement is implemented. Hayes explained what is unusual concerning trade with Korea is that Korea is not currently charging any duties because a foot and mouth disease in its pork herd has increased the need for pork exports. Hayes envisions livestock prices will increase because

of demand in Asia. “Korea is a part of that, and I expect strong exports in the future,” he stated. In terms of dollar impact, Hayes thought it would be about the same as producers saw this year when Korea opened its market – an increase of about $10 per animal. The benefit to U.S. pork producers through the U.S.Panama agreement will not be as great because Panama has a small population and trade is relatively open to the U.S. currently. Hayes said the free trade agreement with Colombia will be a big deal for U.S. pork producers. He explained that prices of domestic pork in Colombia are high because that country does not have the corn production to support large-scale pork production. “Once the U.S. gets free access, it will dramatically increase pork exports,” Hayes stated. He explained this will result in stronger prices for U.S. pork producers initially. Then the industry will respond to the higher prices by increasing production; profits will decrease and the industry will respond to that by reducing production. He explained the hog cycle looks like a roller coaster and added, “Whenever times are good, it expands; prices go lower as producers start losing money, someone quits, supply decreases and prices increase.” When pork prices in the United States are low, more pork products will be exported to Colombia, and as U.S. pork prices increase, Colombia will purchase pork from other countries or switch to other meats or cheese. The result of the trade agreements, he stated, will be to transfer the pork, beef and chicken industries from Korea and Colombia to the United States. Hayes explained that the livestock industries are like shoe manufacturing – “It moves to the parts of the world where it is the least expensive to produce.” The USDA listed the following details of the U.S. Korea Trade Agreement, concerning pork: Korea’s tariffs on imports of more than 90 percent of U.S. pork products will be eliminated on or before January 1, 2016; this includes all frozen pork products as well

as some fresh and processed pork products Date-certain duty-free access will enhance the competitiveness of U.S. pork compared to product from the European Union and Korea Details of the U.S.-Columbia Trade Promotion Agreement pertaining to pork are: Within five years, Columbia will phase out all duties, which are currently as high as 30 percent on fresh, chilled and frozen pork, as well as smoked and dried pork Columbia will immediately eliminate duties on bacon and pork skin All other pork tariffs will be eliminated within 10 years Columbia will continue to recognize the U.S. meat inspection and certification system as equivalent to its own system Details of the U.S.-Panama Trade Promotion (TPA) agreement, concerning pork, are: Panama’s tariffs on pork range from 10 to 70 percent; Panama’s tariffs on pork variety meats will be eliminated immediately on entry into force of the agreement and its duties on some processed pork items will be eliminated within five years The Panama TPA establishes preferential duty-free tariff-rate quotes (TRQ) for 2,554 metric tons of pork products, including 1,600 tons of fresh and frozen pork cuts, 636 tons of pork fat and bacon, and 318 tons of processed pork The quotas will grow annually by six percent (compounded) or greater each year, and the over-quota tariffs will be eliminated in 15 years with no reductions during an initial grace period for the main TRQ; this TRQ is also subject to a safeguard All other pork tariffs will be eliminated within 12 years In addition, in February 2007, Panama recognized the equivalence of the U.S. meat inspection system, allowing U.S. inspectors to certify pork for export to Panama without having each facility inspected by Panamanian authorities Under the CBI, U.S. tariffs on pork imports from Panama currently are zero; the Panama TPA continues this zero-duty treatment

Harvest of gold Booming farm incomes in Nebraska and Iowa signal a new era of prosperity by Henry J. Cordes, Omaha World-Herald Dropping off corn at the ethanol plant, Todd Danhauer turned the crank on his hopper trailer to start the flow of granulated gold. Thanks to a little corn borer problem, the Marquette, Nebraska, farmer didn't get quite the per-acre yield he'd hoped for. But considering he sold this load for $6.10 a bushel – about triple the going market rate just five years ago – he wasn't complaining. "You shouldn't have any farmers complaining," Danhauer said. "Farming's really good right now. It's a really lucrative business." Indeed, something big is happening across the region’s vast agricultural landscape. Ag economists say fundamental market shifts have significantly boosted the global demand for American grain and may be ushering in a new era of prosperity on the farm – a harvest of dollars that packs impact in towns and cities, too. This year's record farm income in Nebraska – projected to top the previous mark by a whopping 35 percent – is no one-year blip. Farm profits in Nebraska, Iowa and across the corn

belt in recent years have run double what they were a decade ago, and they're projected to remain at historically high levels for the foreseeable future. "It's really a pronounced kind of change," said Bruce Johnson, an agricultural economist at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. "We are seeing what I consider a new normal for agriculture in Nebraska and this part of the country." The booming agricultural sector boosts the bottom line of auto and implement dealers, other retailers and ag-related firms in both tiny towns and major trade centers like Omaha. The strong farm economy is one reason Nebraska and Iowa have endured the Great Recession far better than most states. In farm country, there's evidence the boom is inspiring a bit of a renaissance. The 80-year exodus of people from rural Nebraska has slowed in recent years. In the Omaha metro, irrigation system manufacturers Valmont and Lindsay, implement manufacturer Claas, rail hauler Union Pacific and the city's many regional banks are among hundreds of firms that have shared in the farm boom, some seeing record years of their own. The soaring income levels have spun off other benefits, too. Agricultural land values are skyrocketing in both Nebraska and Iowa, creating new wealth among farmland owners in the country and the city. While there's some concern of a bubble, farmers' debt levels are historically low. In addition, taxpayer-funded subsidies are falling as more farmers get their income directly from the market – increasing the likelihood that controversial direct payments to producers will be slashed during the drive to cut federal deficits. So what has happened to create this anomaly on the Plains, coming at a time most of the nation is still staggering through its post-recession doldrums? Fast-growing demand for American grain in developing nations around the globe and the maturation of the ethanol industry have been the biggest gamechangers. They've made more than three decades of $2-a-bushel corn a thing of the past. The commodity this year has traded as high as $8. An economic synergy among corn farmers, ethanol plants and livestock producers who feed their cattle a byproduct of ethanol production has helped all three industries profit. braska and Iowa. But farmers say they're trying to bridle their exuberance. History has shown farmers that income spikes are almost always followed by margin-shrinking cost increases, as those who rent out land and provide equipment and supplies grab their piece of the growing economic pie. Moreover, the last major boom in agriculture – a 1970s income bonanza that followed a Russian grain deal – was followed by a devastating 1980s farm crisis, when foreclosures forced thousands of farm families from the land. Many of today's farmers are survivors of those dark days. "It's pretty hard to jump completely on the bandwagon when you've gone through the bad times," said Central City, Nebraska, farmer Greg Senkbile. For that reason, most in farm country are reluctant at this point to declare these times the dawn of a new "golden age" for American agriculture. "When I hear someone talk about a golden era, I wonder whether it's real gold or fool's gold," said Jason Henderson, chief of the Omaha branch office of the Federal Reserve and one of the fed's top agricultural experts. But Henderson said agriculture is no doubt enjoying an extended period of good times, and all the dynamics that have driven higher profits look like they will remain in place for at least the near future. Farmers should enjoy it, he said, no matter how long it lasts. The iconic images can be seen all across Nebraska and Iowa this month: farmers kicking up dust in their fields to bring in their crops. Harvest time, the chance to see the fruits of the year's hard labor, is always satisfying, said Central City farmer Mark McHargue. But rarely has the harvest been so financially rewarding, too. Economists expect income to fall some in the next two years, but it's still expected to stay well above levels seen a decade ago. Farm income in Iowa and the nation has followed the same trend, also projected to hit record levels this year. This also is one of those rare years when nearly all producers are doing well, whether they grow corn, soybeans or wheat or raise livestock. Beef and pork producers are now seeing profits after an extended downturn. To find the reasons for the brighter outlook, look no farther than the sprawling ethanol plant just beyond McHargue's cornfield, as well as halfway around the globe to the bustling streets of Shanghai and Calcut-

for the Midwest ta. China and India, with their growing middle classes, are importing record amounts of U.S. feed grains and meat, with China forecast this year to supplant Canada as the top destination for U.S. agriculture exports. Aided by a relatively weak U.S. dollar, total ag exports this year are expected to almost triple 2000 levels. "We're not dealing with the market for corn in Beatrice and Benkelman. We're dealing with the market in Beijing," UNL's Johnson said. What's more, the growth in global demand is not seen as short-term. The United Nations has projected that world food production will need to nearly double by 2050. And new trade agreements approved by Congress this month involving South Korea, Colombia and Panama are expected to further boost ag exports. But the new demand for corn also is homegrown, a product of an ethanol industry that now is buying up 40 percent of Nebraska's corn crop. Since new federal environmental standards requiring increased use of cleaner-burning renewable fuels took effect five years ago, ethanol production in Nebraska has tripled. Dennis Conley, a corn market expert at UNL, said it's no accident that over that same time corn prices, hovering around $2 a bushel since the 1970s, began to climb. Forecasts from the U.S. Department of Agriculture for the rest of the decade call for corn to continue to trade over $4, still historically high. The demand for corn is helping raise prices for soybeans and wheat, too. As farmers chase the high corn prices, they put fewer acres into those commodities,

squeezing down supplies. "The way corn and bean prices have pulled up, we just see phenomenal incomes," said Mike Duffy, an Iowa State University economist. "As long as ethanol remains strong and viable, that source of demand for corn is going to stay there." To see the ethanol industry's huge appetite for corn, stop at Central City's plant, owned by Omaha-based Green Plains Renewable Energy. On a recent October day, a steady flow of farmers rumbled in to unload grain. In all, the plant buys 32 million bushels of corn a year, about 12 million more than surrounding Merrick County produces. "We can take every bushel they can give us," said Dwayne Braun, a former farmer who manages the 49employee plant. "Ethanol's good for farmers, and when farmers do well, we all do well in Nebraska." Even though the distiller is now paying triple what it once paid for corn and will soon see its federal production subsidies phased out by Congress, it should continue to be profitable, Braun said. Plants are much more efficient now, and high oil prices have made ethanol competitive with the cost of gas. Green Plains turns each bushel into approximately 2.75 gallons of ethanol, stored on-site in three massive 750,000-gallon tanks. But that's not the only thing coming out of the plant. Distiller's grains are what's left of the corn after it goes through the ethanol production process. The moist, sandy, mustard-colored corn mash is far from a waste product. It makes a better cattle feed than raw corn, packing twice the protein, and costs cattlemen less, too.

Cattle producers from Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas have to pay to have the feed dried first and then shipped from plants in Illinois and Iowa. That makes it tougher for them to compete with Nebraska on the cost of beef production, said Todd Sneller of the Nebraska Ethanol Board. "You're not putting it on a railcar and shipping it to Amarillo. It's just going in a truck down the road." The Central City plant produces 50,000 tons of distiller's grain every month, feedlots from 100 miles around sending in a constant stream of trucks to take advantage of the feed. Travel down the road into the center of town, population 2,800, and you can see other effects from the nation's farm boom. "Five or 10 years ago, most farmers were actually encouraging their kids to get jobs outside the field, it was so poor," Grosshans said. "But when the industry is making money, it allows younger people to come back into the business." As to exactly how long the good times will go on, no one knows for sure. Economists say a new global recession or a stronger dollar would knock the legs out from under the surge by making it tougher for developing countries to afford U.S. farm commodities. For now, though, McHargue, the Central City farmer, will enjoy the good times. He said the cash from this year's crop will help him pay college tuition for his son and pay down some debt. "And I know my wife's been talking about furniture," he said with a laugh. Like most farmers these days, he has no complaints at all.

NOVEMBER 2011

Integrated crop management conference set for November 30 and December 1 The Iowa State University Integrated Crop Management Conference will take place November 30 and December 1 on the Iowa State campus. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. on November 30 in the Scheman Continuing Education Building; the program concludes at 4 p.m. on December 1. Conference attendees can choose from 34 different workshops that offer the latest information on crop production and protection technology in Iowa and surrounding states. Workshops are offered by Iowa State faculty and staff, and invited speakers from around the Midwest. The conference is hosted by Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and the agricultural and biosystems engineering, agronomy, economics, entomology and plant pathology departments. A popular feature of the conference is the variety of guest speakers on the program. “Each year Iowa State specialists invite colleagues from outside the university to share their research activities with conference attendees. This provides an opportunity to hear expertise and opinions from across the region and country at one location,” said Brent Pringnitz, conference coordinator. Invited speakers this year include: David Asbridge, NPK Fertilizer Advisory Service, dis-

cussing the fertilizer situation and outlook for the coming growing season. Bob Nielsen, Purdue University, talking on what it will take to raise the bar for corn yields. Bill Northey, Iowa Secretary of Agriculture, speaking on the Iowa Statewide Nutrient Reduction Initiative. Ken Ostlie, University of Minnesota, presenting what is known about recent performance issues with rootworm-resistant corn. Pat Tranel, University of Illinois, discussing the past, present and future of herbicide resistance in waterhemp. In recent years the conference has filled to capacity with nearly 1,000 producers and agribusiness people in attendance. “The conference has a loyal following of people that attend each year. While filling to capacity is a good problem to have, we hate to turn people away. We encourage people to register early,” Pringnitz stated. Attendees can obtain Certified Crop Adviser credits as well as recertification for Commercial Pesticide Applicators in categories 1A, 1B, 1C, 4 and 10. To register online for this event or for more information, visit the conference website at www.aep.iastate.edu/icm. Registration is $185. Registration increases to $235 after November 18. Enrollment is limited and no registrations will be accepted at the door.

Weed Identification Guide available electronically The popular Weed Identification Field Guide is now available electronically as an e-book and, for the first time, downloadable on iPad. The publication is distributed by the Iowa Soybean Association (ISA) and Iowa State University (ISU) Extension and Outreach. Pioneer Hi-Bred, a DuPont business, has sponsored the capability for users to download the electronic versions for no charge. The Weed Identification Field Guide, CSI 0003, authored in 2010 by Iowa State University Extension specialists, includes images and descriptions of 56 broadleaf weeds and 19 grass and grass-like weeds. The electronic publications, like the print version, include tools to aid in accurate weed identification, as well as weed lifecycle and herbicide management and stew-

ardship information. They also include detailed diagrams, including 24 illustrations, and more than 250 zoomable, high-resolution photographs of weeds common to Iowa. According to David Wright, ISA director of contract research and strategic initiatives, ISA and ISU Extension and Outreach are dedicated to providing farmers and crop specialists the right tools to increase soybean yield in high management production systems. This is the second collaborative ISA/ISU Extension field guide to go electronic; the first was Soybean Diseases. Field guides, print and electronic, can be found at www.iasoybeans.com/productionresearch or on the ISU Extension Online Store at https://store.extension.iastate.edu/.

ISA pledges $148,000 to Iowa 4-H Foundation The Iowa Soybean Association (ISA) has pledged $148,000 to the Iowa 4-H Foundation over the next four years. The goal of the financial commitment is to promote youth engagement and agriculture education in Iowa. With the contribution, Iowa State University Extension 4-H Youth Development will develop a multifaceted approach to enhancing youth awareness of food and agriculture. Included in the project will be the introduction of an innovative cross-country adventure race, taking place at the Iowa 4-H Center near Madrid. The event will positively involve both youth and adults and endorse healthy, family-friendly lifestyles. Owned by the Iowa 4-H Foundation, the Iowa 4-H Center encompasses more than 1,100 acres of native timber and prairie in the heart of Iowa’s spectacular Des Moines River Valley. The Center offers 11 different trails, a 50-foot climbing tower and a 360-foot zip line. “There is no other location in Iowa where an outdoor activity such as a foot race could offer as much diversity and showcase such an exciting cross-country and vertical challenge. It will truly be a unique experience,” said Albert Grunenwald, associate director of the Iowa 4-H Foundation. ISA President Dean Coleman, a soybean farmer from Humboldt, said, “As a former 4-H leader, I have taken 4-H'ers to winter camp at the Iowa 4-H Center and experienced the good 4-H does for youth. It is a great facility. We are proud, at ISA, to give financial support to further our youth's education in agriculture.” To learn more about ISA, visit its website at www.iasoybeans.com.

Iowa State University swine teaching farm renamed for long-time manager

Iowa Commodity Challenge launches in mid-November Central Iowans are invited to take part in a unique educational “game” this fall and winter. The Iowa Commodity Challenge, an online market simulation game, will give players an opportunity to learn firsthand how to improve strategies to sell cash corn and soybeans. The game includes the use of futures and ag options as marketing tools. Four ag marketing clubs will host meetings to launch the game; all meetings begin at 6:30 p.m. with registration at the door the night of the meeting. Introductory meetings will be take place: Monday, November 14 – Nevada, Story County Extension Office Tuesday, November 15 – Lynnville, First State Bank Wednesday, November 16 – Conrad, Mid-Iowa Co-op Grain Merchandising Office Thursday, November 17 – Ogden, Community Center The November club meeting topic will be “Crop Marketing Outlook, Strategies and Tools,” presented by Steve Johnson, Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, and Ed Kordick, Iowa Farm Bureau Federation. Instructions to enroll in the Iowa Commodity Challenge, as well as a 40-page marketing tools workbook, will be given to those enrolling. The game allows participants to use a variety of tools

to trade 50,000 bushels of corn and 20,000 bushels of soybeans stored at their local elevator. “It gives players a chance to look at commodity markets and how they work over the course of several months,” Johnson said. “This game is being set up in combination with the University of Minnesota. It reflects what is going on in the real world markets so we are able to try out some strategies in a setting where we can explore how our tools work.” The online game ends February 29, when participants must have sold their stored grain and settled any of their futures or ag options traded positions. Participants can register for the game when they arrive at the November club meeting. A small registration fee will be charged. Attendance at the first club meeting is strongly encouraged. Follow-up meetings are planned at the same sites in February and March. For more information, contact the Story County Extension Office at 515-382-6551 regarding the Nevada meeting; Poweshiek County Extension Office at 641-623-5188 for the Lynnville meeting; Grundy County Extension at 319-824-6979 about the Conrad meeting; and the Boone County Extension Office at 515-432-3882 for the Ogden meeting.

The Swine Teaching Farm at Iowa State University has been named for Allen Christian, who managed the farm for more than 50 years. The renaming was announced Octtober 22 at an annual gathering of the Department of Animal Science. Christian joined Iowa State in 1959 as swine herdsman at the farm and retired in 2010. “During that time he had a significant impact on students as well as those who worked for him at the farm. They not only learned how to take care of pigs, but also learned about life from Al,” said Maynard Hogberg, chairman of the animal science department. “He had an intense interest in students and worked with them to help make them successful. He was one of our best recruiters as he traveled the state and nation judging swine shows. He would always try to recruit students to Iowa State. Once they came to ISU he took them under his wing and helped them to grow and mature into responsible adults,” Hogberg said. Christian also has been an asset to the nation’s swine industry. His numerous awards include: Superior Service Awards from the American Berkshire Association, National Pork Board Distinguished Service Award and Master Pork Industry Visionary from National Hog Farmer. Located south of Ames, the farm is an educational laboratory that gives hundreds of animal science students first-hand experience studying and working with pigs. It provides pigs for classes on livestock judging, meats, physiology and other subjects and is the site for adult education and outreach programs.

A group of hunters including Governor Branstad, other members of the State of Iowa staff, and businessmen embarked on the annual Governor’s Pheasant Hunt Saturday morning, November 5, near Denison in Crawford County. The Denison Municipal Utilities board granted special permission for the Governor’s Pheasant Hunt to use the fields of prairie grass surrounding well houses between the Boyer River and Highway 39 east of Denison. The area is not typically open to public hunting but is managed for wildlife habitat. Once the Governor’s Pheasant Hunt was done, about noon, everyone gathered at Yellow Smoke Park east of Denison to compare stories, clean their harvest and eat a lunch of grilled pork chops. The event was presented by sponsors that included Farmland Foods and Tyson Foods in Denison along with other Iowa businesses and Pheasants Forever. It allows people who may not otherwise be exposed to rural Iowa to experience the scenery and services available. The hunt is an economic benefit to the community in which it takes place and funds raised through the event are returned to the local Pheasants Forever chapter to help support local programs. In the case of Crawford County Pheasants Forever, projects of current focus include a youth shooting sports complex under development. Photo by Emma Kirk. See additional photos on page 8-9.

NOVEMBER 2011

Branstad withdraws Iowa from Missouri River Association of States and Tribes Focus of flood control not organization’s priority, stakeholders not adequately represented Governor says Governor Terry Branstad announced early in November that he will withdraw Iowa as a member of the Missouri River Association of States and Tribes (MoRAST) effective immediately.

Branstad sent a letter to notify MoRAST Executive Director Michael Hayden of Iowa’s withdrawal. In the letter, Branstad said, “I do not believe that MoRAST is the best avenue to pursue Iowa’s interests and priorities. Rather, I believe more direct discussions with relevant local, state and federal partners will allow for enhanced engagement on Missouri River management and better prioritization of flood control over recreational and other uses. “At the recent MoRAST meeting in Rapids City, South Dakota, MoRAST was not responsive to the perspectives of some states, including Iowa. “While seven of the eight Missouri River governors have called for a heightened focus on flood control, MoRAST did not actively pursue this goal at the recent meeting. “Moreover, there have been longstanding concerns that MoRAST’s bylaws are too narrowly constrained to adequately represent the diversity of key stakeholders and multiple uses of

the River,” the governor wrote. Branstad cited several examples in the letter of why states must improve the focus on flood control for Missouri River management. Those examples include: Flooding caused an estimated $207 million in lost crop sales and related economic activity as over 280,000 farm acres were impacted, according to Iowa Farm Bureau estimates 350 homes met FEMA’s definition of destroyed or major damage Hundreds of miles of Iowa roads were impacted 950,000 trees could die from overexposure to flood waters, according to Iowa Department of Natural Resources estimates The flooding has severely hampered Western Iowa’s economy The letter concluded, “The negative impacts of Missouri River flooding on communities in Western Iowa were immense, and impacted Iowans deserve a fresh approach to Missouri River management.”

About MoRAST The Missouri River Association of States and Tribes (MoRAST) is a regional interstate organization formed by joint resolution of the Governors of Wyoming, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Iowa and Kansas and the Mni Sose Intertribal Water Rights Coalition. It was formed to help resolve issues of concern to the basin states and tribes, to serve as a forum to foster communication and information exchange among the member states, tribes and various other governmental units, and to facilitate the management of the natural resources of the Missouri River Basin, including water resources, fish and wildlife while considering the impacts to the economic, historical, cultural, and social resources. *Information from the Missouri River Association of States and Tribes website: www. mo-rast.org.

Almond-Stuffed Pork Chops

NOVEMBER 2011

Spanish Beef Dips

Ingredients 2 beef shoulder top blade (flat iron) steaks (about 8 oz each) 1 loaf (l pound) ciabatta bread ¼ cup shredded Manchego cheese 1 tbsp minced fresh cilantro Seasoning: 1 tsp brown sugar 1 tsp smoked paprika ¼ tsp pepper Jus: 1 can (13¾ to 14½ oz) beef broth 1 tbsp brown sugar 1 tbsp smoked paprika 1 teaspoon chipotle pepper sauce Onions: 1 tbsp olive oil 3 c Spanish onion, thinly sliced 1 tbsp brown sugar

Ingredients 4 boneless pork loin chops, 1¼-inch thick 1 tablespoon butter ¼ cup chopped almonds ¼ cup celery, chopped ¼ cup onion, chopped 2 tbsp water 1 tsp chicken bouillon granules ½ teaspoon dried parsley flakes 1/8-¼ teaspoon almond flavor 2 slices firm white bread, cut into ½-inch cubes 1 tablespoon browning and seasoning sauce, optional 1 tablespoon water Instructions 1. For stuffing, melt butter in medium saucepan over medium heat. Cook almonds, celery and onion in hot butter until vegetables are tender. 2. Stir in the 2 tablespoons water, bouillon granules, parsley flakes and almond flavor. Add bread cubes; toss to moisten bread cubes. 3. Cut opening in each chop from the outer side; widen opening into pocket, being careful not to cut through the other side of the chop. Fill pockets in chops with equal amounts of stuffing. Secure with toothpicks. 4. Heat oven to 375 degrees F. Place stuffed chops on roasting rack in shallow roasting pan. 5. Bake, uncovered, until internal temperature is 145 degrees F. (check temperature in thickest part of meat), 35-45 minutes. 6. Combine browning and seasoning sauce and 1 tablespoon water in small bowl, if desired; brush over chops. 7. Bake for 2 minutes more. Remove toothpicks from chops.

Instructions 1. Combine seasoning ingredients; press evenly onto beef steaks. Set aside. 2. Combine jus ingredients in medium saucepan; bring to a boil. Reduce heat; simmer 15 to 18 minutes or until liquid is reduced to 1 cup. 3. Meanwhile prepare onions. Heat oil in large nonstick skillet over medium heat until hot. Add onion; cook 5 to 7 minutes or until tender, stirring occasionally. Reduce heat; sprinkle with brown sugar; continue cooking about 10 minutes or until very tender and golden brown, stirring often. Remove from skillet; keep warm. 4. Heat same large nonstick skillet over medium heat until hot. Place steaks in skillet; cook 13 to 15 minutes for medium rare to medium doneness, turning occasionally. Remove pan from heat; let stand 5 minutes. 5. Preheat broiler. Cut bread loaf in half crosswise; cut each half crosswise in half forming quarters. Split each quarter horizontally in half. Place cut sides up on rimmed metal baking sheet so surface of bread is 3 to 4 inches from heat. Broil 30 seconds to 1 minute or until toasted and lightly browned. 6. Carve steaks into thin slices. Place equal amounts of steak slices on bottom portions of bread. Top evenly with onion and cheese. Close sandwiches. Ladle hot jus into cups for dipping. Sprinkle cilantro over au jus.

Farmers’ last chance to win $2,500 for their communities Deadline for America’s Farmers Grow Communities program is November 30 During the season of giving, Iowa farmers can get into the holiday spirit by signing up to win $2,500 for their favorite local nonprofit organizations through America’s Farmer’s Grow Communities, sponsored by the Monsanto Fund. One farmer in each of Iowa’s 99 participating counties will win. Those farmers can share their holiday cheer with food pantries, fire departments, students at local schools and others by signing up and designating an organization in their community. Food pantries give food to the hungry all year round; though, the need for food can be magnified

around the holidays. “This assistance from Grow Communities helped so much as job loss and tough economic times continue to affect our clients,” said Nicole Jones, Humboldt County Food Pantry. This year, the program has expanded to include a total of 1,245 counties. The addition of 41 new counties will result in an additional $102,500 in donations. In Iowa, the Monsanto Fund will invest a total of $247,500 toward nonprofit organizations in rural communities. Now through November 30, farmers can apply online at www.growcommunities.com or call 1-877267-3332 to apply by phone. A $1 donation will be made to local United Way chapters for each farmer who signs up, to further enhance the investment in rural communities. Farmers who meet program eligibility requirements may enter regardless of involvement with previous Grow Communi-

Producers can visit growcommunities.com, pictured at left, to sign up and to learn more about America’s Farmers Grow Communities. By clicking on apply now, producers can register to win $2,500 for their favorite nonprofit organization in your county.

ties programs. One winner will be selected at random from each of the 1,245 eligible counties, and the Monsanto Fund will announce winning farmers and recipient nonprofits in January 2012. Each of Iowa’s 99 counties are eligible for Grow Communities.

Thanks to our brave veterans and so ldiers for your service to our country. We salute you!

Tall prairie grass

Governor hunts for pheasant in Crawford County

Well fields belonging to Denison Municipal Utilities are planted to several varieties of prairie grass and other native plants that foster wildlife feeding and habitat. Some species of grass were at least five feet tall or more, the scale of which is easily seen when a hunter, in this case Chuck Corell, of Des Moines, is standing in the field. A group of hunters granted special permission to access the grounds on Saturday made several passes through the tall grass looking for pheasants with the aid of hunting dogs.

On Saturday morning, November 5, groups of hunters from many states – even as far away as Alaska – were led on pheasant hunts throughout Crawford County by local guides during the 25th annual Iowa Governor’s Pheasant Hunt. A party guided by K.R. Buck, with the Crawford County chapter of Pheasants Forever, and State Representative Jason Schultz (R-Schleswig), included, from left, Steven Southwall, of Nu-Way Industries an Illinois manufacturing company and a guest of the governor; Buck; Governor Terry Branstad, now in his fifth term, he started the hunt in 1986; Chuck Corell, administrator of the Conservation and Recreation Division, with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources; Craig Block, administrator with the Economic Development Authority (formerly Iowa Department of Economic Development); State Trooper Darren Argabright; and Schultz. The annual event brought 78 hunters and their guests to Denison and Crawford County over the weekend. Fifteen groups of hunters spread out throughout the county and harvested approximately 80 birds. Good job, dogs! Governor’s Pheasant Hunt guide, and longtime member and proponent of Crawford County Pheasants Forever, KR Buck praises hunting labs Gunner and Lady for retrieving a pheasant harvested during the Governor’s Pheasant Hunt on Saturday at field’s edge while Governor Terry Branstad looks on. The dogs flushed birds for the four hunters and two guides during the morning event.

Break time Hiking through the tall grass demands exertion on the part of men and dogs during the hunt. When a pass landed the group at the edge of the field in a driveway, everyone took advantage of the easier walking to take a break. Pictured are hunters invited to participate with Governor Terry Branstad, Steven Southwall and Chuck Corell. The black lab, Gunner, helped flush and retrieve birds and belongs to KR Buck, of Denison.

Gift presented to Governor On Friday evening, November 4, pheasant hunters and their guests gathered at Boulders Conference Center in Denison for a steak dinner catered by Staley’s Food Service, of Charter Oak. Speakers at the event were from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, Economic Development Authority, Governor Terry Branstad, and Pheasants Forever. The Crawford County Chapter of Pheasant’s Forever, represented by chapter president John Emswiler (above, left), presented artwork depicting the Donna Reed Theatre to Governor Branstad. The gift commemorated the event and was in appreciation of the governor joining hunters in Crawford County for the annual tradition, which takes place throughout the state.

Iowa ag secretary seeks nominations for Renewable Fuels Marketing Awards Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Bill Northey is encouraging Iowa fuel retailers and gas stations to submit nominations for the Secretary’s Renewable Fuels Marketing Awards, which recognize fuel retailers that have gone above and beyond in their efforts to sell renewable fuels. Awards are presented for both the marketing of ethanol and biodiesel. “Fuel retailers continue to take steps to make ethanol and biodiesel more available to Iowa customers and this award is an opportunity to recognize those who have shown leadership in promoting these renewable fuels and making them

more available to customers, Northey said. Qualifying entities will be those that market the renewable fuels they have available through creative efforts including, but not limited to: hosting special events highlighting their renewable fuels, development of creative signage, initiation of new advertisements or marketing efforts, and efforts dramatically increase renewable fuel availability. Nominations forms can be found on the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship’s website at www.IowaAgriculture.gov. Completed nominations can be submitted via email at Dusting.Van-

deHoef@iowaagriculture.gov or mailed to Henry A. Wallace Building, Attn: Dustin Vande Hoef, 502 East 9th Street, Des Moines IA 50319. Nominations must be submitted by January 1, 2012. The winners will be recognized during a meeting of the Petroleum Marketers & Convenience Stores of Iowa in Des Moines on January 10. This is the fifth year for the award. Last year Kyle Krause of Kum & Go and Roger Baschke of Green Plains Energy Company were recognized. Iowa leads the nation in the production of ethanol and biodiesel.

According to the Iowa Renewable Fuels Association, Iowa has 41 ethanol refineries with the capacity to produce nearly 3.7 billion gallons annually. Iowa also has 12 biodiesel refineries with a combined annual capacity of over 315 million gallons. The Iowa Renewable Fuels Infrastructure Program offers cost-share grants for the installation of E85 dispensers, blender pumps, biodiesel dispensers, and biodiesel storage facilities. The grant program is managed by Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship and more information can be found on the Department’s website.

Newell family receives Wergin Good Farm Neighbor Award The Coalition to Support Iowa’s Farmers (CSIF) is proud to recognize Steve and Colisa Kier of Newell for being selected as the November ‘Gary Wergin Good Farm Neighbor Award’ winner. Bill Northey, Iowa Secretary of Agriculture, presented the award to the Kier family at DFS in Newell on Friday, November 4. The Kier’s have been raising turkeys since 1987 and currently raise turkeys for Sara Lee Foods. They operate two turkey farms, one is a brood hub and the other is a finishing farm. Mike Christianson, a neighbor of the

Kier’s, nominated them for the award, citing their attention to their livestock, neighbors and exceptional efforts to help clean up the community after destructive spring storms. “Following a spring of devastating tornadoes in our area, busloads of kids from area schools, local businesses and individuals from the community worked together to aid in the clean-up,” Kier said. “Some folks were amazed at the participation and many said, ‘this is what Iowa is all about, helping one another.’ I’m humbled to receive this award and would like to share it with all of the volunteers in

our area for their efforts. I also want to thank the Coalition for all of their hard work on behalf of Iowa agriculture.” The Wergin Good Farm Neighbor award, sponsored by CSIF, recognizes Iowa livestock farmers who take pride in doing things right, which includes caring for the environment and their livestock and being good neighbors. “The Kier family does an outstanding job caring for their turkeys, taking care of the land and helping their neighbors,” said CSIF Executive Director, Brian Waddingham. “They are truly deserving of this award and someone we would all like to

have as our neighbors.” The Wergin Good Farm Neighbor Award, presented by the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Iowa Ag Radio Network in partnership with CSIF, is presented nine times annually to an Iowa farm family who raises livestock. It’s given in honor of distinguished WHO Radio farm broadcaster Gary Wergin and recognizes families who take pride in being good neighbors and stewards of the land. To nominate a deserving livestock farmer or farm family, contact Waddingham at bwaddingham@supportfarmers.com or call at (515) 225-5531.

NOVEMBER 2011

Iowa Organic Conference set for November 21 The 11th annual Iowa Organic Conference, to take place Monday, November 21, at the Scheman Building on the Iowa State campus, will offer many educational opportunities for those interested in organic agriculture research and practical applications for farming systems. It will cover topics of interest to organic and conventional farmers, extension staff, industry representatives and students who want to learn more about sciencebased research and how farmers involved in organic production apply the research. Organic and transitioning farmers benefit from educational and certification services provided by Iowa State University (ISU) organic agriculture program and Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship (IDALS) organic division; services rated among the top in the country. The Iowa organic conference hosted by Iowa State University is one such educational event. Conference keynote speaker is Joe Bennett, organic agriculture manager at Cascadian Farms/Small Planet Foods, of Rockport, Washington. Bennett has a master of science in plant pathology and a bachelor of science in horticulture from Oregon State University. He is currently involved in extensive on-farm research trials with Oregon State University. Cascadian Farms represents a prime example of how the demand for organic foods in the United States propelled a company from a small, backyard operation to a well-recognized food processor and national distributor, while remaining true to their original organic principles of growing and sourcing crops free of pesticides and synthetic fertilizers. Organic farmers who produce crops for the Cascadian Farms brand consist of small and large operations, all united by the same goal of supplying healthy, fresh food to the increasing number of organic consumers. Conference speakers include a variety of university researchers: Erin Silva, University of Wisconsin, Dale Mutch, Michigan State University, and Jim Riddle, University of Minnesota, will present research results from their organic grain crops, cover crops, vegetable and organic food research.

The conference will offer many educational opportunities for those interested in organic agriculture research and practical applications for farming systems. Jeff Moyer and Christine Ziegler of the Rodale Institute will address the potential for organic no-till, what some are calling the “Holy Grail” of organic production. Area organic farmers will be offering tips for best practices during transition to organic farming, including weed management strategies. New research from Iowa State will include robotic weeders for organic vegetable crops. Kathleen Delate, Iowa State professor of agronomy and horticulture, and Craig Chase, ISU Extension program specialist, will discuss crop, soils and economic data from the 14-year LTAR (Long-Term Agroecological Research) comparison of organic and conventional rotations at the ISU Neely-Kinyon Farm in Greenfield. In 2010, organic corn and soybean yields were equal to conventional yields, at 147 and 57 bushels per acre, respectively. Cynthia Cambardella, USDA National Laboratory for Ag and the Environment, Ames, has quantified carbon sequestration benefits of the LTAR organic rotations, which can help offset harmful global CO2 emissions. “Farmers, both conventional and organic, have had many challenges this year,” Delate said. “The cold, wet spring delayed growth and the dry periods in the middle of the season affected corn pollination and overall crop production; but prices are high and organic promises an excellent return to management, with organic

corn selling for $12 a bushel and food-grade organic soybeans reaching $22 a bushel. The demand for organic foods has not ceased, even during the recession.” Chase said that the time to transition into organic is as good as ever. With conventional commodity prices so high, even with a lower yield during the two-year transition to organic, farmers will have the buffer of high conventional prices; and can apply for Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) and certification cost-share programs, according to Chase. Iowa currently ranks tenth in the nation in the number of organic farmers. 2011 organic conference agenda details An all-organic lunch, featuring local organic chicken, squash, broccoli, onions, tomatoes and apples transformed into a gourmet meal by the ISU Dining Services (DS) will be served at the conference. According to Nancy Levandowki, DS director, Iowa State students see the value of eating more sustainable foods, and are willing to pay a small premium to support family farms and the environment. One of the examples of food sourced for ISU Dining Services is the Wills Family Farm of Adel. Organic “Liberty” and “Redfree” apples produced by Maury Wills, head of the IDALS organic division, will be used in apple tarts topped with organic cinnamon ice cream for conference-goers. In addition to 12 workshop sessions, 25 educational and industry exhibits will be on display at the conference. Vendor set-up and reception begins Sunday, November 20, from 5 to 7 p.m.; the full conference starts with a 7:30 a.m. registration on Monday, November 21, at the Scheman Building in Ames. The complete agenda is available on the conference website: www.ucs.iastate.edu/mnet/organic11/home.html. Registration and additional conference information also is available on the conference website. For information about the program content contact conference coordinator, Kathleen Delate, at 515-294-7069 or kdelate@iastate.edu. For information about registration, contact registration services at registration-info@iastate.edu.
