Rodeo is Tribute to Wild West Show Hall of Fame rodeo is Buffalo Bill tradition The Buffalo Bill Rodeo has always been a tribute to the western show that was popularized more than a century ago by North Platte’s adopted son and showman, Buffalo Bill Cody. And when the rodeo stampedes into the Buffalo Bill Arena June 15-18, Cody would be proud of the longevity and strength of the four day event. Inducted into the Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame, the Buffalo Bill Rodeo will feature over 500 cowboys and cowgirls competing in seven events: bareback riding, steer wrestling, saddle bronc riding, tie-down roping, team roping, women’s barrel racing, and bull riding. In addition to rodeo competition, fans will be entertained by the One Arm Bandit, John Payne. The Shidler, Okla. resident, who lost an arm in an accident, rides a horse by steering with his knees, as he cracks a bullwhip and moves animals – bison, longhorn-watusi steers, among others, up a specially designed ramp to the top of his trailer and truck. Bullfighters Greg Rumohr, Rio Vista, Texas, and Quirt Hunt, North Platte, Neb., will work the bull riding, distracting bulls so riders can scramble to safety after each eight second ride. Ted Kimzey, Strong City, Okla., will serve as barrelman. North Platte native Hadley Barrett will call the action at the Buffalo Bill Rodeo, along with Randy Corley. Barrett, who is as much a tradition at the rodeo as anything else, has been part of the event since 1964. Corley has worked with his father-in –law since 1982.

Rodeo chairman Marty Petersen enjoys the rodeo’s ties to Buffalo Bill. “That’s the fun part, to be able to carry on Buffalo Bill’s tradition and the western lifestyle. That’s part of the reason we put on a quality show each year.” Buffalo Bill, impersonated by Bruce Richman of North Platte, kicks off each night of rodeo by riding into the arena, shooting off a pistol, and announcing the kick off of “Buffalo Bill’s The Buffalo Bill Rodeo is Wild West and Congress one of 16 rodeos inducted into of Rough Riders of the the PRCA’s Hall of Fame in World.” 2008. Cowboy Hats and Boots for German Student Foreign exchange student gets a taste of rodeo When Jan ter Horst leaves Nebraska after his year as a foreign exchange student, the German native will own a cowboy hat and a pair of cowboy boots. Two pairs, that is. Jan, an 18 year old high school student who lives with the Bump and Leesa Kraeger host family in Avoca, has turned into a rodeo competitor. He came to Nebraska in August of last year and joined the Kraegers, who own horses and cattle and compete in rodeo. Bump is a steer wrestler and sons Hoyt, 18, and Reed, 16, compete in high school rodeo. Youngest son Gage, 13, rides horses but doesn’t compete yet. Once he saw his host brothers steer wrestle and ride bucking horses, he was interested. “I thought it was crazy at first,” he remembers. “Why are they jumping on the steer? Why are they sitting on the horse while it is bucking? But the sport interested him and he decided to try it. He told himself, “even if you don’t like it, just try it. It looks pretty fun.” So he tried it. After learning how to steer wrestle from his host father, Bump, and attending two bronc riding schools, he has competed at high school rodeos in McCook, Burwell and Atkinson. So far, he’s gotten bucked off his bronc and hasn’t received a time in the steer wrestling. But it doesn’t matter how well Jan has done at rodeos. He loves the experience and will have stories to tell when he returns to Germany in June. He’s met a lot of people and has enjoyed it, and his goal is to win a buckle. “If I win a buckle, the experience and all I’ve done here, it’s worth

it. I will never forget this year.” After he returns to Berlin, Jan will finish his high school in Germany and will attend college either in Germany or in the U.S. He may earn a degree in business and marketing, and if he comes back to America, he’d like to rodeo. “I really like this country here,” he says. When Jan wears his hat and boots on the streets of Berlin, he’ll stand out, but he doesn’t mind. It’ll be a reminder of his time spent in Nebraska. “I’ve had a good year. It was exciting and fun.”

North Platte Man to Work Rodeo A local man will work as bullfighter at the Buffalo Bill Rodeo in North Platte June 15-18. Quirt Hunt, who lives outside North Platte, grew up in Custer County, where he graduated from Anselmo-Merna High School in 1996. He worked on local farms and ranches and rode horses, but his family never competed in rodeo. But after he had gone to a few rodeos, he became intrigued with it. In high school, he competed in wrestling and in rodeo as a bareback rider and bull rider. He made the state high school finals rodeo as a bareback rider, but “I wasn’t much good at either (of the events)” he says. His calling was protecting bull riders. After high school, Quirt worked high school and amateur rodeos before breaking into the pro rodeo world. He got his Pro Rodeo Cowboys Association card in 2002, and since then, has fought bulls at big rodeos and Pro Bull Riders events, including Prescott, Ariz., Denver, Colo., Rodeo Austin (Texas), Ak-Sar-Ben in Omaha, and the PBR World Cup Finals. Bullfighting conjures up thoughts of adrenaline junkies, but Quirt isn’t one of them. “I like the satisfaction of doing a good job, and the close calls,” he says. “Saving the cowboy when you have ahold of the bull and bring his head up, it makes you feel good.” He hasn’t had any career-threatening injuries, which is unusual for a man who is 33. He has had cartilage tears in his knees, torn ligaments, broken ribs, and the usual bad bruises. When he’s not fighting bulls, he trains horses and raises bucking bulls and commercial cattle. He also helps his

This will be Quirt’s first year to work the Buffalo Bill Rodeo, and he is honored. “North Platte is a hometown rodeo for me, and I’m excited to work it.” He and his wife Amber have two daughters, ages three and one. The three year old loves it that her daddy is a bullfighter. She thinks all daddies go to work at rodeos. “She doesn’t know any different,” says Quirt. “She thinks it’s cool.”

Big Horses, Big Act to be in Phillipsburg Big Horse Productions is one of the specialty acts for the 2011 Kansas' Biggest Rodeo. Described as a combination of vaulting, theater and circus bareback riding, Big Horse Production’s founder, Erik Martonovich brings eight Belgian geldings and four riders to Phillipsburg to perform. Erik roman rides the matched Belgians as the other riders vault from horse to horse, standing on them, and trick riding as Erik drives the team. Martonovich started riding at age three. By the time he was five, “I was bored sitting on my pony so I started doing tricks on my own.” His parents decided they should “send me somewhere (for lessons) so at least I wouldn’t kill myself.” He started vaulting lessons at age six, and as an adult, competed on the U.S. Equestrian Team from 1996 to 2002. In 2000, the U.S. team won the world championship at the World Equestrian Games. He has won seven national titles and numerous individual titles. The eight Belgians that travel with Big Horse Productions weigh a total of 20,000 lbs. The smallest is 18 hands, with the tallest at 19.1 hands. “One of the cool effects is that the bleachers

shake as we come by,” Martonovich says. In 2002, one of Erik’s horses was the first draft horse to ever compete at a World Equestrian Games. The wheel team is named Comet and Doc; the next team is Rico and Travis; the third team is Zeus and Badge, and the lead team is Red and Lance. Big Horse Productions entertains at a variety of events. They have performed for fans at natural horse trainer Pat Parelli’s shows, and have worked with the Arabian Nights Road Show/Black Stallion Literacy Foundation. In March of this year, they entertained rodeo fans at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. They are just starting to work rodeos, so Big Horse Production’s trip to Phillipsburg is their first time at a Kansas rodeo. Martonovich and Big Horse Productions will provide the entertainment during events at all three nights of Kansas' Biggest Rodeo in Phillipsburg. Old West Trail Rodeo - Crawford, NE 65 YEARS of professional rodeo will be celebrated in Crawford, NE July 2011! The PRCA rodeo will be July 3-4, but on July 1st there will be a new venue of Tiny Twisters and a Jr. Wild Horse Race. The rodeo when it started was sanctioned by what was known as the RCA, Rodeo Cowboys Association. Years later the transition was made to name the association the PRCA, Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association. The history of this rodeo could be a “Who’s Who” for the contestants that have entered the rodeo. Many world champion rodeo contestants have made the stop in Crawford over the Cowboy Christmas 4th of July rodeo run. If you wish to purchase tickets for the rodeo you can buy them at the gate. You will want to show up early as the rodeo starts at 8pm each night and it is a sellout event! The Old West Trail Rodeo is the only PRCA rodeo in Nebraska over the 4th of July. The Fourth of July is a very busy time for rodeo contestants all across the nation to include Canada. Crawford attracts anywhere from 300 to 400 professional rodeo contestants each year. Last year the contestant list represented fifteen states to include several from Canada and Australia. Over the Fourth of July there are 35 major rodeos going on. Crawford, NE is in the top as a stopping point for these rodeo contestants. The results of the Old West Trail Rodeo are published in the PSN Rodeo Sports News after the rodeo and I might add along with some other major rodeos. Any PRCA contestant may enter the rodeo

and this rodeo draws the best in the sport of professional rodeo. Each year the rodeo board hosts an Old West Trail Rodeo Queen and Princess Contest, which will take place June 25th. The winner of this event is given a one-year scholarship to Chadron State College. Following this contest will be the Jr. King and Queen contest and Jr. Fun Day on July 2nd. This is where our rodeo future get their start. Tough Enough to Wear Pink is a program that was instituted in pro rodeo to fight the battle against cancer. Cancer is a very ugly disease that has hit home in our families more often than not. Wear your pink to the rodeo on July 3rd. This year the city of Crawford will be celebrating its 125th Anniversary, a milestone in any community. The celebration will host its annual parade on the morning of the 4th of July and lots of entertainment in the city park. Three miles west of Crawford is the home of Ft. Robinson, one of the oldest historical landmarks in the United States. Friday – Sunday there will be a Western and Wildlife Art Show featuring some of the top named artists in the United States. Ord Brothers Compete, Have Fun Together Walk the halls of Ord High School, and you’re bound to run into a Petska boy. Four Petska brothers stair step through the high school classes: Orrin, 18, is a senior; Lathan, 17, is a junior; Flagan, 16, is a sophomore, and Macon, 15, is a freshman. Youngest brother Talon, age nine, rounds out the crew. The four older boys are together a lot of the time: three of the four play basketball for the Ord Chants. Two of them run cross –country, two run track, one is in FFA, three of them are in the school’s swing choir and all four Petskas are in choir class at the same time. They like to tease the teacher. “We give the teacher a bad time,” Lathan says. “The teacher is fun and we know we won’t get in big, big trouble.” But the one event in which all four Petskas share a common love is high school rodeo. The four boys compete in the team roping, with Orrin partnering with Lathan, and Flagan partnering with Macon. Rodeo is something they can practice together at the family’s arena, and is something that appeals to the boys, who are competitive but help each other out. “When we all rope together, everybody’s giving each other pointers and helping each other out,” says Macon. For Flagan, rodeo is something he does that makes him different from the other kids. “There’s only us boys and one other person in our school that rodeo. That’s one thing we can say we do that nobody else in our school does.” New experiences don’t bother the boys. The three oldest have spent several weeks each summer on a commercial fishing boat off the coast of Alaska.

Rodeo has taught them how to work for what they want. “You have to work at it,” Orrin says. “Nobody can just go out and do it. It has taught me to man up and get it done.” Lathan agrees with his brother. “You have to work hard to get any good at it.”” And the boys have put in the work. For the first time, all four will qualify in the team roping for the high school finals rodeo in Hastings in June. They’ll travel there together as a family, the four of them plus brother Talon and parents Greg and Theresa, like they travel to most of their rodeos. Crowding seven people into one vehicle can be wearing, but the boys deal with it. “When you’re in a small place, you don’t want to say anything bad because you’ll have to stop on the road and duke it out,” says Lathan. “But we usually don’t do that. That’s kind of cavemannish, so we stay away from that.” Rodeo has provided her kids a new and rich experience, Theresa says. “It’s given them confidence, and it’s given them different friends to connect with as well.” And the boys love rodeo. “Even if you’ve had a bad day, and you’ve completely screwed up your (rodeo) run, you can still have a good time,” Orrin says. “If you’re not having fun, you’re doing something wrong.” And that’s true for the Petska boys not only at rodeo, but in life.

Specialty Act to be in North Platte One Arm Bandit performs at Buffalo Bill Rodeo A man with one arm might be limited in what he can do. But not for the One Arm Bandit, John Payne. John, Shidler, Okla., has taken a disadvantage and turned it into a good thing. The 58 year old cowboy lost his right arm in an electrocution accident in 1973. After ranching for years and going broke twice (“the last time I went past being broke” he jokes), he become a pro rodeo entertainer. He was at a rodeo with a stock contractor friend when he mouthed off that he could do better than the entertainer who was hired. The friend said, “we’ll let you be entertainer next year.” So Payne went to work. By rodeo time next year, he had trained Corriente cattle to run on top of a trailer, with blackmouth cur dogs. It was a hit, and Payne’s act was born. That was in 1987, and since then, he has trained mustangs, mules, longhorn-watusi steers, and buffalo to go up specially designed ramps on the tops of trailers and trucks. His act has exceeded what mouthed off about thirty years ago. Since then, the One Arm Bandit has won the Pro Rodeo Cowboy Association’s Specialty Act of the Year eleven times, ranging from 1986 to 2010. He has worked such prestigious shows as the Calgary Stampede, RodeoHouston, the National Western Stock Show and Rodeo in Denver, and the National Finals Rodeo. Now his children, Lynn and Amanda, criss cross the country, each with their own rig, entertainninga t rodeos.

In the summers, there are often three One Arm Bandit rigs traveling from coast to coast. This isn’t the first time for the One Arm Bandit to perform in North Platte. He was at the Buffalo Bill Rodeo some years ago, and he is excited about returning. The colorful character says, “I’m looking forward to coming back. My show is a guarantee. If you come to the rodeo and watch the show and don’t think my show is worth the price of a ticket, and you can convince my mama, I’ll give you your money back.” He and his wife Judy, who were married in 1975, enjoy their four grandkids. Old West Trail Rodeo Queen & Princess Contest Applications are now available for contestants for the Old West Trail Rodeo (OWTR) Queen and Princess Contest. The contest is Saturday, June 25, 2011 in Crawford, Nebraska. The OWTR Queen qualifications are the young ladies must be a high school graduate and 17-23 years old as of day of the contest. Along with the honor of being the 2011 OWTR Queen she will receive several prizes one of which is a one year tuition scholarship to Chadron State College in Chadron, Nebraska to be used for in-class, correspondence, or online courses during the Fall ‘11/ Spring ‘12 semesters. The OWTR Princess qualifications are the young ladies must be 13-17 years old as of the day of the contest and not a high school graduate. Along with the honor of being the 2011 OWTR Princess she will receive several prizes (trophy belt buckle, jewelry and more). Both queen and princess contestants must be residents of Nebraska or a neighboring state (CO, WY, SD, IA and KS) and will receive prizes just for being contestants. Applications are due June 15, 2011. Miss Rodeo America 2010

McKenzie Haley

McKenzie Haley of Winner, South Dakota reigns as Miss Rodeo America 2011. She received the crown on December 4, 2010 at the conclusion of the week-long pageant held in Las Vegas, Nevada in conjunction with the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. McKenzie will travel more than 100,000 miles during her reign representing Miss Rodeo America, Inc. and the Professional Rodeo Cowboy’s Association. “I am so proud and honored to serve as Miss Rodeo America.” Haley said. “This has been a dream of mine since I was a little girl. Miss Rodeo America has the opportunity to touch the lives of current and future rodeo fans, to be a source of information about rodeo and the western lifestyle, and to be a role-model for young people across the country”. McKenzie will be taking time out from her studies at Black Hills State University in Spearfish, South Dakota to reign as the “First Lady of Professional Rodeo”. with plans to eventually obtain her masters degree in school psychology. She will be able to use the $20,000 scholarship she was awarded as Miss Rodeo America from the Miss Rodeo America Scholarship Foundation to help further her educational goals. The oldest of five children, McKenzie is grateful for her family’s support as she pursued her dream of becoming Miss Rodeo America. “My family has always been there with support and encouragement and I am very lucky and grateful for all their help in helping me reach this goal.” When McKenzie isn’t promoting the sport of rodeo either in or out of the arena, she enjoys working out and spending time with her friends and family. She is excited about the prospect of spending 2011 traveling across the country and promoting professional rodeo, the Miss Rodeo America organization and our great sponsors. McKenzie will be the first to tell you she is living her dream!

The honor of being Miss Rodeo Nebraska will allow me to share my love of rodeo with people from all walks of life. While preserving its heritage Miss Rodeo Nebraska is more then a job title, but rather a passion of heart. I feel blessed to represent Nebraska and the great sport of rodeo. My belief of becoming Miss Rodeo Nebraska became reality June 2010 at the NEBRASKAland Days Buffalo Bill Rodeo in North Platte, Nebraska. It was exciting to win the categories of: speech, appearance, personality and horsemanship. I currently attend Chadron State College majoring in Business Administration and Pre-Nursing. As a Student at Chadron I am very active in College Rodeo and Intramurals. It was an honor being the Regional Barrel Racing Director for the Central Rocky Mountain Region and the President of the Chadron State

College Rodeo Club. My passions include: barrel racing, playing basketball, Nebraska Cornhusker football, riding and training horses, swimming and socializing with friends and family. I am proud to be employed by Angela’s Eatery in Chadron while attending college. I am thrilled to call Harrison, NE “Home Sweet Home” and graduated from Sioux County High School in 2006. While in High School I loved participating in Basketball, Volleyball, Track, FFA, 4-H and High School Rodeo. This great ranching community gave me the confidence and excellent skills to fulfill my dream of becoming Miss Rodeo Nebraska. No matter who you are, or where you are, you can be living the dream “Ridin’ Ropin’ N Royalty”.

Miss Teen Rodeo Nebraska 2010

Shelby Peters Miss Shelby Peters was named the 2010 Miss Teen Rodeo Nebraska during the Nebraskaland Days Miss Rodeo Nebraska Pageant. She is the daughter of Joe and Candy Peters of Red Cloud,

Nebraska. Shelby has two older sisters: Stacia Shipman and Courtney Streit. Shelby also has 4 nieces: Jocelyn Shipman, Julia Shipman, Kayli Streit and Maycie Streit; further more, she has 3 nephews: Justin Shipman, Laythen Streit, and Jake Shipman. During the Pageant, Shelby won the areas of horsemanship, personality and tied in the area of the written test. Shelby is a senior at Red Cloud High School and enjoys being very active. She is the Captain of her spirit squad (cheer and dance) as well as the President of her FFA Chapter. Shelby also participates in One Act Play Production, Speech, Softball, REACH (Responsible and Educated Adolescents Can Help), National Honor Society, and is the news reporter for her 4-H club. She is a volunteer for the Mary Lanning Hospice team for the terminally ill. She is a Certified Nurse’s Assistant at Franklin County Memorial Hospital throughout the year as well as a Lifeguard at the Red Cloud Community Pool during the summer. She has ambitions to attend college for a pre-medical program. She aspires to be a doctor and come back to a rural area to practice. Eventually she hopes to

become a part of Doctors Without Borders or take mission trips to third world countries to offer her help and knowledge. The story is that “horse” was Shelby’s first word. Having two older sisters, Shelby’s parents thought this was merely a phase and that she would be out of it in a couple of years. However, after many years had passed and her desire for a horse still stood strong, her parents decided to buy her a saddle for Christmas as a precursor for things to come. This saddle fueled her ambitions for 4H and rodeo queening in the next few years. Shelby’s motto is “Life’s a dance, you learn as you go.” Ever since Shelby was in diapers she has known every word to this song by John Michael Montgomery. She lives by this in the way that you may not know everything but it’s all right because you will learn from your experiences and mistakes. She also believes that sometimes in life we are leaders and at other times we need to follow to grow and prosper into who we are meant to be.

Miss Rodeo NE & Miss Teen Rodeo NE Contestants Meet the Miss Rodeo Nebraska 2012 Contestants Dayna Olson - North Platte, NE Dayna Olson, the 21 year old daughter of Kirk and Tracy Olson, comes from North Platte, Nebraska. She is currently attending the University of Wyoming studying Elementary Education, Early childhood Development and Speech-Language Pathology. Her activities include: President of the College of Education Ambassadors, Vice-President of Judicial Affairs, Panhellenic Senior Executive Council, Mortar Board Service Chairman, equestrian team, Kappa Kappa Gamma, National Cutting Horse Association, and is a past member of the Nebraska High School Rodeo Association. Her goal is to pursue a career in Early Childhood Speech-Language Pathology. She aspires to be Miss Rodeo Nebraska in order to become an ambassador for the sport of rodeo by educating audiences about the importance of rodeo’s prestigious western heritage. Rodeo is not just a source of entertainment, but a way of life which involves a culture of courage, strength and kindness. Sierra Peterson - Ashland, NE 21 year old Sierra Peterson is from Ashland, Nebraska. Her parents are Mark and Kate Peterson. She is currently attending Oklahoma Christian University studying Mass Communications and Public Relations. Her activities include Pi Zeta Phi, and production editor of the Oklahoma Christian University newspaper. She is mentor at Stanley Hupfeld Academy and participates in volleyball and basketball. She also enjoys spending time with family and attending ropings and rodeos. Reading, dancing, and helping with local 4-H groups are also on her activity list. Her goal is to work as a communications specialist for a sponsor of rodeos where she will continue to promote the sport. She would like to be Miss Rodeo Nebraska in order to share her love and passion for rodeo and the state of Nebraska. She wants to share her rodeo experience with people from all walks of life to support the sport of rodeo and its western heritage.

Amanda Pflasterer - Grand Island, NE Grand Island is where Amanda Pflasterer calls home. She is the 23 year old daughter of Jim and Vicki Pflasterer. She currently holds a BS degree in Animal Science from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. Her activities while attending school were Sigma Alpha, President of UNL Animal Science Ambassadors, UNL Chancellor’s Leadership Class Selection. UNL Leadership Class Facilitator and Advisory Board, UNL Dean’s Scholars in Experiential Leadership, Past FFA Member and American Degree Recipient, American Paint Horse Association, Nebraska Paint Horse Club, Nebraska Horse Clubs Association, and 4-H. She also enjoys running, reading, sewing and spending time with her family. Her life ambition is to reside in rural Nebraska and improve the health and wellness of animals and be a leader in her community. She would like to be named Miss Rodeo Nebraska and represent an outstanding group of people that are proud to call the Cornhusker State home. She would consider the opportunity a precious gift and would like to give back to her state through her representation of western heritage with all the grace, enthusiasm and professionalism that this prestigious opportunity requires and deserves. Kathleen Woerman - Norfolk, NE Kathleen Woerman is the 21 year old daughter of Loy Woerman and Diane Gehring. She claims Norfolk, Nebraska as home. She is currently studying Behavioral Science at Northeast Community College. She is involved in many community activities including Norfolk ARC Chapter, Ride Rank for a Cure, Mid-States Rodeo Association, PRCA and MBRA. Her other special interests include leather work, creating her own tack, riding instructor, swing dancing, starting colts, helping local rodeo queen contestants and assisting with rodeo queen competitions. Her ultimate goal is to earn a PhD in Clinical Psychology in order to help troubled and disabled teens. Her number one goal in life is to be happy and spread happiness to those who surround her. She would like to be Miss Rodeo Nebraska to leave a positive impact on every person she meets. She believes a rodeo queen is an ambassador not only for the sport of rodeo, but for the Western life style, the American tradition, and the words of God. She would take great pride in being this ambassador.

Meet the Miss Teen Rodeo Nebraska 2011 Contestants Dakota Clough - Ogallala, NE Dakota Clough is the eighteen year old daughter of Chad and Tania Perlinger, and Jim and Beth Clough of Ogallala, Nebraska. While in high school she was active in volleyball, tennis, National Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society, speech, drama and dance team. She is in her 11th year of 4-H and is active in her church. Her goals include finishing her Associates Degree in Ag Business and Animal Science. She plans to attend a university to complete her education. She would like to be Miss Teen Rodeo Nebraska to promote the sport of rodeo and the State of Nebraska. She feels she would be a positive role model for young girls.

Nicole Nickerson - Maxwell, NE Nicole Nickerson hails from Maxwell, Nebraska and is the seventeen year old daughter of Jay and Diane Nickerson. Her special interests include volleyball, track and speech, play production, band and chorus. She is a member of 4-H and is especially interested in horses. She would like to become a radiologist and work in a childrens hospital. It has been a life-long dream for her to be Miss Teen Rodeo Nebraska and she feels she would be a great role model for anyone.
