Design Index This senior elective studio covers the total process of residential design from concept development through two-and three-dimensional presentations. Building codes, covenants, and restrictions create the guidelines for solutions; while knowledge of sustainable practices, residential business practice, construction methods, materials and custom interior architectural details are applied.
This studio course explores various types of residential dwellings as they relate to different inhabitants. Project work applies the programming and design development phases of the residential design process to include information gathering, needs analysis, concept and spatial development, and FF&E selections based on research and suitability.
This course challenges students to use planning requirements to create universal and accessible designs. Construction, electrical, and basic plumbing are taught with emphasis on these applications within residential kitchen and baths. Industry relevant nomenclature and product information are used to create technical documents and custom aesthetic solutions.
Internship is a monitored program for senior-level students to work part-time within the interior design industry. Field expierence is an opportunity for students to apply and advance their knowledge, skills and professionalism under the supervision of qualified mentor.

This senior level studio is a study of the materials and fabrication techniques used in the design and construction of interiors and how these details are communicated three-dimensionally and in construction documents. Content includes interior construction detailing of ceilings, walls, flooring, millwork. Project solutions will consider the integration of building technology as mechanical, electrical, plumbing and other relevant systems.
Students successfully completing this course will be able to use Computer-Aided Design software to assist them in their three-dimensional project development. Students will gain a comprehensive understanding of the integration of computer technology into the design process and an introduction to BIM (Building Information Modeling) technology.
In this senior level course, students use critical thinking skills through research, writing, discussion, and problem-solving. Emphasis is on the identification of a design problem that could be better met through more responsible design. Students choose a research topic with instuctor approval. Students develop a viable and visual solution for the project typically researched in ID420. Solutions incorprate environmentally sound, cost effective, and responsible design methods to influence an audience using creative delivery methods.
This senior level studio course covers the physical and psychological factors that impact hospitality environments. Students are expected to graphically demonstrate original and viable solutions. Research on human factors, codes, and lighting are combined with product mix and multi-sensory aspects of design to influence perceived value to the customer.
HARPER LOFT
The client is a professional photographer. He works freelance for advertising, newspapers and magazines. He also collects antiques, mostly related to film and photography.
The Loft is in the 7th floor of a recently converted industrial building into Living-Working lofts. The space is provided with an ADA compliant full bath, heating and air conditioning installed, electrical service, water and gas supply for a kitchen and sewer stack provided. The ceiling height is 16’ which provides enough clearance to build a mezzanine in part of the floor area. The windows face east/south and provide plenty of natural light and ventilation, running almost from floor to ceiling. In order to adjust the space to our client’s needs we can remove some walls such as the closet and the bathroom walls, the requirements stated we could not remove the plumbing only remodel it. The mechanical closet or the installation chute cannot be removed or cut for openings. We can use a variety of materials to build the mezzanine, as long as they are dry construction, concrete is not an option. It could be wood, aluminum, stainless steel, light gauge steel, glass resin, fiber glass and others. We cannot remove or re-route the heating and air conditioning air ducts, although we can extend or add a branch if required. The floors only have plywood sub-floor (underlayment) they can be finished with any material like ceramic, hardwood, cork, carpet, porcelain and even granite.
We have been hired to remodel a suburban house using specific North American housing styles. The house needs to be designed considering the life style of its multi-generational household. The house is located in Winnetka, IL near Lake Michigan. The neighborhood has a combination of period revival and contemporary homes.
This slightly modernized prairie style home gives off a warm and welcoming feeling to family and guests. With the typical feel of the sweeping horizontal lines, ribbon windows, gently sloping roofs, heavy-set chimneys and a wide open floor plan, this house is meant to be used for its space. Lots of natural light passing through the stained glass windows create a warm, informal and inviting space that looks right out on to the open prairie. With the use of sustainability, low VOC paints and recycled bamboo flooring, it adds a sense of character to each room. A variety of geometric shapes and forms inspired by nature are highlighted through window arrangements, columns, low walls and planters, creating a visually appealing home. Such a beautiful view from the addition to the house; the family room is used to enjoy some afternoon cocktails on a gorgeous sunny day.
The Patricia Dominik kitchen has been recently updated and remodeled. It boosts a genrously sized yet functional kitchen that provides open circulation and ample workspace. The design features a modern style with a stainless steel range hood and decorative tile backsplash. Kitchen functions are subdivided into cold/hot food and drink prep areas. In addition to these primary kitchen functions, a generous pantry and appliance hutch are located nearby. The ample countertop space, open circulation and variety makes this design ideal for any residential kitchen.

INTERNSHIP
VENDOR KNOWLEDGE I had the opportunity to gain knowledge on fabric vendors during my internship expierience. How a specific vendor works, where to call, and how to order fabrics in a specific manner.
INVENTORY As an intern, my job was to track inventory that came in and out of the showroom. Designers would usually look through our showroom and pick out different fabrics they liked. If they happened to see a fabric and we did not have a memo sample, I would order one for them.
DESIGNER INTERRACTION Interaction with designers coming into the showroom was on a daily bases. Having the opportunity to work on client’s projects and picking out specific fabrics for rooms or furniture. Discussing what type of style the client is going for and how it would work with the overall design concept.
PURCHASE ORDERS Ordering fabrics for clients and for the showroom was part of the daily tasks I had as an intern. Filling out paper work, calling specific vendors and emailing vendor representatives.
DISPLAY All the furniture that is in the showroom can be ordered by the designers and clients. The process of making a display was to show off the brand of new collection fabrics that our vendors had sent to the showroom.
During my internship at the Design d’Vision showroom, it gave me a better understanding of vendor’s roles in the design process and helped me become familiar with different types of fabrics, furnishings and hardware. As an intern, I have gotten to do a wide range of tasks, which included: calling vendor representatives to order samples and determine pricing, putting together sample packets, assisted designers in preparation for client meetings, and maintained and organized the resource library. In addition to the tasks I worked on myself, being able to observe the full design process and how it was to work as a team. Being able to work with the design team at Design d’ Vision was truly an enriching experience that increased my excitement and knowledge to enter the industry.

Thank You These past three years have been filled with challenges and great adventures. Spending countless hours at school working on projects and troubleshooting new programs. Without the help and support from others, I don’t know where I would be today. I personally would like to thank my instructors for sharing their enthusiasm and knowledge of design; especially Roberto Lama and Suzann Nordstrom. Both of you have been such an inspiration to me. Educating me about design and making me love the reasons why I chose to become an Interior Designer. I would like to thank Brittany Bennett and Olivia Keefer for being my rocks. Since day one we have been inseparable and we have been given the known nickname as the “three musketeers”. Thank you both for inspiring me everyday with your friendship and compassion. To all my ID girls, thank you for your support, laughter and friendship. Lastly, a tremendous thank you to Adam Stanchiu for being my main go-to man for any help I needed on my projects. You have been patient with me and your friendship and support mean the world to me; thank you for being there.
