MIMERSGADE RENOVATION

Horsens, Denmark February - June 2016 6th semester prof. Erik Toft - sip:et@via.dk Student Project - awarded first prize Group Project The assignment The project was performed during my exchange studies at the VIA University College which I attended as part of the Erasmus+ programme. The main objective was to propose refurbisment of a single unit as well as the whole Mimersgade neighbourhood. There was emphasis on providing realistic and economic solution. This was a group project done in stages. The first was registration, second was outline proposal, the third - scheme design. At the time this publication was assembled, the remaining parts were still being realized. The second part formed the major chunk of the whole project and hence will be discussed in greater detail. Work division and planning During outline proposal, my task in the bigger scheme was the redesign of the whole neighbourhood and also the renovation conception of a single unit. Individually, I worked on comliling the plans of all the floorsand collaborated with my team members to design the outlook of the building.

Social structure observations Mimersgade is an area inhabited by the part of the society, which has low income. The group of it’s inhabitants is shrinking rapidly. The condition of the place of their inhabitance is deteriorating and needs renovation. Therefore a chance to raise the quality of their living conditions has occured. Requirements Keep the changes to a minimum.

Sun in the living room in the evening. Suitable for employed people. Results of applying the mirroring principle A clear distribution of different character spaces was acquired. We got the chance to adapt the building to the requirements of two age groups. The proposition A responds to the needs of the professionally active group. The proposition B responds to the needs of the retired group of people. The entrances to the staircases remain on the eastern facades.

2016

Mirroring principle and it’s application The arrangement of rooms is subject to, what was called by us, a mirroring principle. All buildings have night spaces and day spaces placed on separate sides of an axis, which runs along the load-bearing wall in the middle of the building’s width. The planes of two example buildings are proposed. Work on the functional plan of one of them was continued. While the other remains an idea to be developed.

OUTLINE PROPOSAL

SITE DEVELOPMENT STRATEGY DESIGN PRINCIPLE Upon a closer look it was seen that the spaces around the buildings were all arranged in a similar fashion with a clear lack of personal character which we thought could diversify the range of outdoor activities. Hence we divided the space into more „private” and more „public” spaces. On that principle we developed the site plan for the whole neighbourhood. COMMERCIAL AND COMMON AREAS We placed the comercial and common areas along the Mimersvej in the squares, which we classified as public. Also we located them on the crossing of Aegirsgade Vej and the long pedestrian path.

PRIVATE SQUARES The paths run along curves. Soft lines are also visible in the idea to locate little hills there. Entances to the staircases can be accessed from the private squares. Most of the private squares are coveres with greenery.

2016

MIMERSGADE RENOVATION

PUBLIC SQUARES While planning them we payed attention to the needs of visitors of commercial services. Entances to them the can be accessed from the public squares. They are preceded by paved areas, which can serve as commercial service extension. Pavement covering predominates on those yards.

12

PEDESTRIAN AND BIKING PATHS We increased the lenght and amount of routes designed for pedestrians and cyclists. We closed part of the Mimersgade Vej for car movement. It is narrower and can only be accessed by four-wheeled vehicles in case of emergency such as conflagration. CAR ACCESS AND PARKING SPACES We closed part of the Mimersgade Vej for car movement. Parking spaces are located partly along Mimersgade Vej, Sonderbrogade Vej, Lindvigsvej. We placed the biggest concrentration in the south-western corner of the neighbourhood covered by our site plan.

Location Warsaw district of Mokotów is a lively place. It’s architecture is a mixture of components, the history of which reaches the enlightenment era, interwar or the post-war years. The richness of the styles and patterns forms a collection of inspirations. From this set I derived numerous examples alluding to neoplasticism. Their propinquity to this style is comprised in angular shapes, resignation from using the ornament and the aim to obtain open space. Analysys and idea I started work with attempts of transfering a play of lines and surfaces from a leaf of paper to a three-dimmensional form.

MULTISTOREY RESIDENTIAL BUILDING

The assignment The assigned task was to propose a design of a residential building in the imposed area. I was expected to prepare a scheme solving the relation with the surroudings and functional problems, appearance and structural issues. The project work was preceded with analysis of the location.

18

Building relation to the surroundings The residential unit is located at the back of a bustling street - Madalińskiego. It is facing a tranquil lane. The starting point of the concept was an easy flow of pedestian movement across the plot. Therefore I placed the continous living floors on the ground floor - an assembly of three volumes. The gaps between them enable movement thorugh the plot in many directions and ensure lively atmosphere around the building. The building is placed as close to the South-Eastern corner of the plot as it can be in order to extend it’s distance to neighbouring edifices. The higher part of it is a height dominant. Public areas which have commercial premises are focused in proximity of the corner of Różyckiego and Kielecka streets. A small paved squre was created there. It is suitable for enlargement of the area of cafes around it. There are two entrances to the building. One of them imposes going through the square.

House next to a wall

The project is an assignment we were given during architectural design classes on detached housing. We were told to choose an inspiring family, which we were able to find in our surroundings. The living and working spaces should have been fitted into the design. We were expected to rethink the layout of the house and the plot and establish a dialog between the new component and the existing elements. Plenty of consideration was given to the choice of materials, appropriate scale, visibility and hiding the building and exhibiting beautiful views. Localization The project site was allocated in Czersk. It was one of the most imortant Mazovian cities in the medieval times. The settlement hosts famous ruins of a castle. We could choose one of the plots on the sloping surface in valley of one of Vistula’s tributaries’ - Cedron. The vast choice The family As the extensive, natural spaces in Czersk seemed very insipiring for me, I chose a family interested in paragliding, hang gliding and plane modelling. The family consists of parents and their adolescent son. I also predicted space for the family the son might set up in the future.

House next to a wall

The place. Observations and fascinations. One of my first presumtions was to initiate a tight connection between the house and the castle. Therefore I decided to place it just underneath the ruins on the other side of a trodden trail. The route sets of from the town market, bends round the castle hill and leads outside the town. It seamed reasonable to create a barrier shielding the inhabitants of the house from unwanted eyes while intruducing them as many sights of the landscape as possible . In spite of that, I made an attempt oto avoid turning my project into a screening structure. At that time my interest in the wall structure occured. I was fascinated with its’ solidity, mass and secular character. It melted with the landscape, giving an impression of existing in it’s place for ever. Then I began analysing the castle structure. I noticed that the huts, bastion and the towers seem to be attached to the wall - following it and dependent. The castle reminded me of a thread in the landscape and the buildings of volumes strung on it. Demands I decided to check if the principle governing the castle structure would also work fine when applied to a one-family house. Therefore I formed the following set of demands: - giving the inhibitants privacy, - forming the plan in respect of the family members’ different interests and activities, Idea A parallel to the castle structure is repeating the wall and the division of the house into three volumes. The first one is a garage, workshop and auxiliary rooms. The second one hosts the living areas and the third one hosts the inmate’s bedrooms. Moreover I higlighted the contrast between the massive wall and light, openwork buildings.

The terrain is sloping towards the South and the valley of Cedron. An overwhelming part of the plot is surrounded with the wall. Only the northern triangle is not enclosed like the rest of the plot. The plot can only be entered by crossing the wall. There are three entrances. The one on the Northern wall and the one in the South -Eastern corner of the area are designed for the pedestrians. The doorway in the North-Eastern Corner is suitable for vehicles. The paved areas The western part is covered with greenery, whereas the eastern piece is mostly paved. Clinker was used to cover the surfaces of the courtyard, the terraces and the paths. The route cutting the loan in two is unpaved. Greenery High-rise plants were rejected in order to avoid veiling the view. The wall The wall is 100 cm higher than the building. In other places it is as high as a fence.

House next to a wall

The plan The house has a longitudunal shape. A corridor runs along the wall. That is also where the view axis runs. The corridor is not interrupted with any rooms or walls in order to preserve the clarity of view. The house has a very long contour what gives majority of the rooms an access to windows. The prevailing part of the house is situated on the ground level. Therefore, the bedrooms and the living room have their own exits to the garden. The complicated landform enforced the use of stairs. One of them lead from the courtyard to the main entrance, The other ones bond the living and the sleeping part of the house. The third ones are situated in front of the parents’ bedroom.

Project was performed during architectural design course on small public utility building. The building site is allocated in Żabieniec neighbouring with Chojnowski Landscape Park - place where natural environment is being protected. It is a glade next to river Jeziorka. Żabieniec lays in close proximity to Warsaw and Piaseczno and thereby is a frequent destination of weekend family trips. Choice of function Choosing the building function was a major part of the assignment. Reflections about it consumed about a quater of the semester. We were to think of a building destination that suits the place best. I thought about the mute nature and that it might be worthwhile to let it speak. I decided to create a place of storage, passing and promoting the immaterial heritage. I fought that due to the locatization, the resources should comprise stories and legends about nature. The facility will host a theatre, playground, library of audiobooks, cafe and a store

Storytelling theatre 2014

Users The storytelling theatre is dedicated to children of different age and parents accompaning them. The way of functioning The building is comprised of an internal „dark” part and a „bright” part”, „wrapped” around the first one. The outer part is a place, where the users may read, listen to stories, play and prepare plays of their own. The inner part is a theater hall. Due to the flat leveling of the floor and the possibility of changing of seats arrangement, the traditional division to scene and audience disappears. The outer room might function twofold. After being separated from the restaurant, it can serve as a backstage. Not having done so it can be incorporated into the restaurant space. A buffet has been planned, where snaks may be served. An emphasis is put on exposing plays which do not require many decorations and actors. The viewers are most of all impressed with creations of their imagination. Educational features The storytelling theatre impoves childrens’ imagiantion. It imposes them to study theatre and literature. It prepares children to understand the works of art, teaches them the ability to concentrate. The way spectacles are being played is adjusted to childrens’ perception. Children may participate in art workshops. Adults can go to storytelling performances.

Inspirations of the building form The considerations about the shape of the building are based on an assumption that it should be suitable for the way children cognite the world. The partitions, separating the backstage and the main hall, are moveable. Thereby they enable frequent rearrangement of the room. Hence building can be used for many activities and types of performance. The cubes Wooden cubes are loosely placed around the building main hall. They form maze-type playground and restaurant and reading seats. The facades appearance is greatly influenced by the cubes as they are visible through the glass. Load-bearing structure Load-bearing structure is a canadian timber frame. It is covered with wooden trusses.

Modlin Airport near Warsaw March-June 2014 2nd semester prof. Ewa Kuryłowicz arch. Michał Adamczyk - michał.adamczyk@mimika.com.pl arch. Mikołaj Kwieciński Student Project Individual Project

Assignment This assignment was performed for architectural design course. We were told to prepare a draft of a settlement of a falconer and his pupil birds. Site and functional programme A newly open airport a bit outside Warsaw was chosen to become the localization of falconry. The foundation consists of a dwelling of the falconer - suitable both for a permanent and a temporary stay, constant stay aviaries and reproduction aviaries, sheds, a subsidiary building.

Idea The falconry proposal, which I present here, is supposed to comply with the spirit of the airport and the spirit of nature. During the work on the draft of the design I was guided by the fascination of flying. All of the decsions, I took, were determined by the will to create objects, which would give the impression that they are about to take of the ground.

Idea implementation I come with a proposal of a group of objects, resting on many thin and undersized abutments, which enlace the solids. The posts bring to mind ropes helding a ballon and preventing it from flying away into skies. Due to their proportions anddeflection, the abutments seem to be under the action of tensile force while they are under compressive force. Thereby the buildings represent light masses unconnected to the ground.

The buildings have a “box” - an internal constructionbuilt of a steel skeleton filled with insulation. The internal construction is suspended to steel frames, which are visible from the outside. A thin membrane of fiberglass is stretched on the frames. The water and thermal insulation is constituted of the membrane and the cavity underneath it. It calls to mind a chinese lantern and escalates the impression of lightness.

Idea: the trick behind the balance Gained skills: Rhinoceros, matematical equation determining the shape of architecture

Observation tower The mystery of balance

Vistula shore, Warsaw October - November 2015 5th semester prof. Hanna Michalak dr Paweł Przybysz Student Project Individual Project

Observiation tower

The project was done as an assignment for construction design course. Inspirations and idea I reached out to structures which do not loose their balance although the majority of their mass is located outside the contour of support area. I created an idea of construction, mass of which is located as far from it’s middle axis as possible. I studied various examples from nature and existing buildings and I came to a conslusion that this problem might be solved by placing the center of gravity inside the contour of support.

44

LOCALIZATION Idea development A vast amount of volume is located outside the contour of the support. This effect was achieved by replacing the middle axis of the tower with a curve and placing structural circles’ midpoints on the curve.

Idea: invisibility in a crowd Gained skills: photoshop, incorporating observations of everyday life into architecture

Mimetism

The project was done as one of my first assignments at Warsaw University of Technology for the Elements of Design course, It took place at one of hub streets of Warsaw. We spent half of the semester gathering knowlegde about and trying to understand the place chosen for us by the teachers. Our final design task was to propose a hideaway spot which would allow it’s user to feel incarnated into his surroundings at the same time remaining invisible himself. The idea I decided to place the hideaway in the most bustling part of the street. I took advantage of the shape of crossroads and the natural tendency of the stream of passersby to spread there. Thereby they behaviour as is the hideaway was not there. It’s key feature is a vertical slit which provokes users to „spy” on the passersby. The form Designing the shape was comprised as a second part of the exercise. I proposed a longtitudional wedge. The form is made of a double layer of a steel net held by steel rods construction. The partition tends to change it’s transparency depending on the localization of the observer.

Drawings and paintings

52

I always showed interest in draftsmanship. In order to become enrolled as a student of architecture, I had to develop my drawing skills. For this purpose, I attended drawing courses. During that time my passion for drawing and painting deepened. Shortly after being accepted as a student, I was employed as a drawing and watercolour painting tutor of architecture candidates in Pracownia Rysunku Domin in Warsaw, the school, where I had studied. There, I learned to communicate with my pupils by presenting my thoughts in a clear manner. My passion for art exceeds beyond creating paintings of my own. I can’t imagine a trip to a city, I have never been to, without visiting it’s art gallery. I love digging into the history of art and architecture by reading literature about them.
