ESPERANZA ACADEMY CHARTER SCHOOL 201 W HUNTING PARK AVE | 75,000 SF | $23,000,000 | PZS ARCHITECTS

A charter elementary school based on the concept of a treehouse, for the non-profit Esperanza located in North Philadelphia, to round out their educational campus which is already home to an existing college and middle school. Sustainability was an important goal to our client, even though the project was not certified.

Taking over as Project Architect towards the end of design development, I coordinated the engineer's information to the model. We discovered that the grade was higher than previously shown, which triggered a reassessment of the facade proportions. Simultaneously, I performed lighting studies to inform our glazing layout and window to wall ratio, although the final design was chosen primarily for aesthetic reasons. The original cladding design was based on concrete panels, which were too expensive for the non-profit's budget. So we reconfigured the panel system layout to standard dimensions to accomodate various alternate cladding systems, while staying true to our intent. We incorporated spot colors from Esperanza's branding to add some playfulness to the exterior.

DEPARTMENT OF HUMAN SERVICES CLIENT WELCOME [CITY OF PHILADELPHIA] 1515 ARCH ST | 5,000 SF | $500,000 | COMPLETED 10/2021 | PZS ARCHITECTS Renovation of DHS Client spaces to provide a more welcoming experience for clients, often children who have experienced trauma, and the staff that support them. Finishes were updated throughout to be low-VOC, with bio-based flooring, and calming, but playful, blue/ green tones. The new vestibule prevents unwanted heat loss as well as adding another layer of privacy for clients, and an updated security area replaces the intimidating existing entrance. The faulty existing HVAC units were replaced, and the shower room and drinking fountain were updated with more modern and low-flow plumbing fixtures. Cost was a concern, so interventions were kept minimal.
