Success for Women in Agri-food Program Introduction The Success for Women in Agrifood Program began as a means to identify barriers women ag entrepreneurs face in rural Alberta and AFC undertook the research project in April of 2015. We used various methodologies to collect information and data to gain a wellrounded perspective from rural Albertan's, women and men. From this we identified the need to continue to create and develop strong women agrifood business entrepreneur leaders in rural Alberta. We need to make sure we provide them the learning, networking, and mentorship opportunities they need to compete and grow in a prosperous agrifood businesses as respected entrepreneurs, based on the barriers they identified. The overall objective of the project is to develop and implement a program for women which addresses barriers and increases the capacity and success of women within the regional food system. Learn more at www.agfoodcouncil.com/s4wag. The Debut event is for all women agentrepreneurs in rural Alberta who are interested or in the business of primary agriculture, food processing and value added and are wanting to propel their business forward. This unique event is being hosted in 5 concurrent locations and will be recorded. By attending in one location, you will get exclusive access to the presentations from ALL 5 locations, that is 12 sessions in total! We look forward to seeing you there!
A word from the Success for Women in Agri-food Community Animator This last year has been a great opportunity for me to speak with a number of women across rural Alberta and learn about the many significant contributions made to the agriculture and agri-food industry through their businesses from primary agriculture, Community Supported Agriculture, to production of processed food products, and other value added products. They openly talked about their successes as well as the challenges or barriers they faced in the businesses they are currently in.
For some, it was the barriers that
stopped them from getting started. The objective of the Success for Women in Agri-Food project is to develop and implement a program to address barriers to increase the capacity and success of those women within the regional food system.
It is with pleasure AFC presents the Success for Women in Agri-Food Debut Event to showcase and kick start the 2017 Program. On November 19th, 2017, in five locations across rural Alberta, we will be using a combination of delivery formats to provide presentations to start addressing those barriers identified through the surveys and conversations.
Join us for the opportunity to learn practical take home concepts, meet
other women entrepreneurs in agriculture and agri-food, and learn about what’s to come in 2017!

Lakeland began here in 1913 as the Vermilion School of Agriculture, and it still has a countryside feel: green lawns, mature trees, and as much sky as you want. A lot of the learning at Vermilion takes place outdoors --- on the college farm, the firefighting school’s training grounds, or the environmental science programs field labs. But times have changed since 1913, and so has Lakeland’s campus at Vermilion. Today our modern classrooms and computer labs support coursework in more than eight

Many people, women and men alike are scared of the unknown. Those that have the drive to look beyond the fear and persist are those that will move forward. Being involved in the AgriFood business, you ladies should be brimming with pride! You are putting your heart and soul into something that has a large risk, but an enormous return of supplying food to the world! Not much higher honor can be achieved. As women we take on many responsibilities such as caregiving, running the household and running the farming operations (physical and business side of it). This may be done alone. I applaud you for that. Family and work life balance is a struggle. Often we neglect ourselves. Use your network of likeminded people to provide support, mentorship and a helping hand.
