Presidents Address
The year 2011 just gone by has been a very successful one for agriculture in general but in particular for the beef sector where prices for all types of cattle went to a level we have not seen in this country for many years. The price hike was a very welcome boost for beef finishers though many may say that input costs are still an ongoing concern to profitability.
In conclusion I want to thank Peadar for his work and dedication this past year and Carol for all her administrative duties. I want to thank my fellow council members , club officers, sponsors of various events and all who worked for our society in any shape or form to make it a most successful year. Wishing you and your families a very Happy New Year and all the best in your simmental breeding for 2012.
From a simmental point of view it was also a very good year in my opinion with the sale of pedigree and commercial stock being very satisfactory in particular the latter end of the year. The premier sale in early November at Roscommon achieved an almost total clearance for females with a top price and record of â‚Ź17,000 and the majority of the top bulls selling very well. It was a most satisfactory day for breeders involved. Commercial sales also proved to be a major success towards the year end both private and at mart sales particularly Ballymote and Gort. A hugh demand and upsurge for simmental commercial stock was evident throughout this past Autumn. Summer Shows were again very well supported culminating in a very impressive display at the national show in Tullamore in early August. All the above would not be possible were it not for the support of you as exhibitors therefore I want to thank most sincerely everybody who exhibited cattle at various events throughout this past year. A number of open days also took place both pedigree and commercial and for that I would like to thank those people for opening their gates to the society to promote the breed in the best possible way. As I already said 2011 ended very well for our society in general and going into 2012 we as a council want to continue this positivity and I look forward to leading our society to an even better year which so happens to be the 40th anniversary of the first imports of simmental cattle to Ireland.
Congratulations to Society President Tom and Alison who were married on July 16th 2011

Tyrone Farmers Endorse Ballymote Heifers
Tony and Eugene Hughes, Carrickmore cannot praise highly enough the commercial Simmental heifers that they have purchased at the annual export sale at Ballymote. They are producing remarkable calves that top local store markets.
Eugene Hughes farms in partnership with his son Tony on the outskirts of Carrickmore, Co Tyrone. There has been a real emphasis in recent years to improve the quality of females in the suckler herd, and this led them to attend the commercial Simmental Sale at Ballymote, Co Sligo. They were blown away by the quality and power of the females on offer and immediately purchased some of the best at the sale. These initial females outperformed all of the other cows in the herd resulting in an annual trip to this sale to source females each year. Tony explains “My father was keen to let me take the reins and with his support I saw an opportunity for purchasing top drawer cow makers, and we have been delighted with the results.” The herd is mostly Spring calving with the cows and calves put out at the first signs of grass. The Simmental commercial mothers have an abundance of milk and the calves quickly flourish. Good grassland 8

management results in the calves only requiring creep feed a few weeks before selling. “We find our calves perform well, and only need to introduce concentrates coming up to the suckled calf sales so that they don’t look behind them at weaning.” adds Tony.

Simmental, the Bull to breed replacement Heifers
Based in Clonea, Co. Waterford, John Power runs 200 suckler cows. John ran Charolais & Limousin bulls with his herd until 2008 when he purchased a Simmental bull at the Simmental Premier sale. John noticed his weanling performance slipping and decided that he needed to increase the milk supply in his sucklers. He selected Simmental as the breed to deliver milk and he has not been disappointed. John is seeing the merits of Simmental on two fronts. This is the first year that John has calved replacements from his Simmental bull and his progeny from the Simmental Heifers are out performing his other breeds by 40kgs at present. Secondly, the Simmental progeny from his Limousin & Charolais cows are also out performing the comrade progeny from different sires by up to 40kgs. John summerises his experience with Simmental to date as being “exceptionally positive”. He goes on to say that he “bought the Simmental bull to breed replacement heifers and has received the extra advantage of increased growth rate in the male progeny”

Simmental Delivers Exceptional Growth Rates
Seamus Allen from Ballynageragh, Dunhill, Co. Waterford farms with his father Thomas and son Mark. Herd Profile: 40 ¾ bred Simmental Cows and 2 Simmental Stock Bulls. All replacement heifers calf at 24 months. All male progeny are finished as bull beef at 12 to 14 months of age. Heifers kept as replacements with surplus heifers sold for breeding. Simmental Delivers for Dairy Farmer
The Carey family from Rathangan, Co. Offaly has always run a Simmental bull with their 70 cow herd. They find that Simmental is easy calving with average gestation and that calves are very vigorous at birth. They are very pleased with fertility and workrate of Simmental bulls and also that they are very docile and easy to work with. The most important aspect is that they have constant demand for newborn calves and find that all their sales are to repeats buyers.

Developments in Irish Beef Production Systems In recent years we have seen substantial changes in the manner in which Irish beef is produced. One of the most notable changes has been the increase in young bull production. As shown by the following chart, 3 out of every 10 male cattle in the country are now being slaughtered as entire bulls. This represents a four-fold increase when compared with 10 years ago. This development has been largely producer-led, as beef farmers responded to the efficiencies that can be realised. On average, the daily liveweight gain achieved by young bulls is 14% higher than the equivalent steer. Because of the higher kill-out%, this translates into an 18% increase in the rate of carcase gain. Performance has improved over time as finishers gained more expertise in feeding techniques, resulting in heavier carcase weights. The following table summarises the characteristics of young bulls slaughtered in Ireland, in comparison with steers (2011). Young Bulls

As the following graph demonstrates, the supply of young bulls tends to be highly seasonal. Bull slaughterings tend to be highest between the late autumn and late spring periods, since the majority of young bulls are finished intensively indoors after their second grazing season. These animals comprise an important part of the weekly kill at this time of year, when the availability of steers tends to be low. However, as young bull production continues to grow, it is essential that producers focus on delivering a carcase that will meet customer demands. Nowadays, very few customers will buy all of the beef coming from an individual carcass. More typically, the 20 or more primal cuts and manufacturing beef products that come from a carcase go to several different customers across various markets. Export destination will depend on the carcass specification, the time of year, promotions that may be taking place, availability of domestic beef and consumer spending power in the respective markets. With this in mind, our production systems should enable beef to meet the requirements of most of our important markets. The UK market accounts for almost half of Irish beef exports, with approximately 50% of that volume destined for the multiple retail sector. These customers have a preference for prime steer and heifer beef, farm quality assured, carcass weight 260 – 380kg, of conformation ‘O=’ or better and fat class 3, 4- or 4=. Beef from young bulls meeting these specifications is also acceptable once these animals are slaughtered under 16 months of age. For other customers, including manufacturing, foodservice and continental retail, there tends to be a wider variation with regard to the specifications demanded. Many of these accept beef coming from well-finished young bulls in the more typical age range of 18 to 20 months. However, many of the young bulls finished in this country are either too lean (fat class below 2+) or too heavy (carcass weight above 400kg) for customers requirements. Bord Bia recently undertook a study which looked at the impact of carcase weight, conformation and fat class on the suitability of some of the main primal cuts for our major customers. Three different young bull carcases were selected, as follows: 12
Irish Simmental Cattle Society
Irish Simmental Cattle Society
Year Book 2012 • • •
330kg O+ 2+ (typical of a beef-cross young bull out of the dairy herd, reasonable finish) 390kg R+ 3- (typical young bull from the suckler herd, good finish) 480kg U+ 2= (heavily muscled young bull from the suckler herd, lacked cover)
As expected, the saleable meat yield, or ‘boneout %’ improved at higher carcase weights and superior conformation grades. The following diagram illustrates the variation in weight of some of the main primal cuts between the three carcases. It was clearly observed that the size of the primal cuts increased with carcase weight. Our major retail and foodservice customers have defined specifications when it comes to the desired weight range for each of these cuts. In the case of the most important steak cut, the striploin, cuts between 4.5 and 7.5kg command the highest value. These are easy to present into steaks weighing between 170 and 230 grams and of a standard thickness. In contrast, heavy striploins tend to sell for roasting at a discounted price (10 to 15% less), since their steaks would be too wide to fit into retail packs. Similarly, the preferred weight range for the cuberoll, or ribeye, is between 2.5 and 4.0kg, while that for topside is between 7 and 13kg. What these specifications would indicate is that in order to maximise sales revenue, the ideal carcase weight range is between 280 and 400kg. Heavier carcases will not consistently produce the size of cuts that our customers are looking for. While heavy, well-shaped carcases may result in a higher saleable meat %, this will not compensate for the devaluation that occurs when the primal cuts exceed desired weight specifications.

With the approaching abolition of dairy quotas in 2015, Ireland’s dairy herd looks set to increase considerably in line with targets described in the Food Harvest 2020 report. This will, in turn, lead to greater production of dairy-bred calves for beef production. In addition, recent strong cattle prices have given suckler producers the confidence to retain more breeding heifers. Therefore, one would expect the country’s suckler herd to recover and hopefully return to a level of over 1.2 million as was in place in 2005. Source: Food Harvest 2020 / Bord Bia With this in mind, Ireland faces a definite opportunity. With over 70 high end retail customers throughout Europe, Irish beef already enjoys a strong market position. The growth in production will increase exports and gain an even greater share of the high value EU market, at a time when other countries are forecasting a decline in beef supplies. Producers must continue to concentrate on supplying a prime beef carcase which will meet the requirements of our major customers; whether that be from a heifer, steer or young bull. Extensive research is being conducted by Teagasc in the area of beef production from young bulls: from management and feeding techniques to trials on meat eating quality. This will help to further refine the technical parameters required while meeting market requirements. Irish Simmental Cattle Society

Year Book 2012 Weaning weights have greatest influence on farm profitability
production systems in depth and establish how efficient they are. ESSENTIAL At the moment, poor suckler reproduction efficiency and the high cost of maintaining the cow is limiting profitability on suckler farms. Improving live weight gain, breeding performance and feed utilisation is therefore essential for the future. Optimum grass utilisation during an extended grazing season is essential both for the cows and calves. Minimising the cost associated with the cow during the dry period and maximising the weight at weaning of the offspring will deliver on this requirement. Suckler production totally relies on high levels of reproductive efficiency. Whether a farmer produces animals for the live export market or for the home market, they need to focus on what aspect of their system may be restricting or limiting the cows’ output. Irrespective of breed or breed cross, weaning weights has the greatest influence on profitability. One of the main factors contributing to weaning weight is cow fertility. Cow fertility can be improved in numerous ways, including greater focus on heat detection to control the calving interval. It is essential to ensure proper cow management and nutrition at calving in order to avoid health problems.
Acknowledgement: Article printed Irish Farming Independent January 2012 World beef prices are at unprecedented levels and are forecast to remain strong for the foreseeable future, due mainly to short supplies in the main beef-producing regions. Low global supplies present Irish beef farmers with the opportunity to rapidly increase herd numbers in order to avail of higher prices. The key to Ireland continuing to have a very strong hold in the British and European markets is to maintain and grow our national suckler herd. Ireland’s good reputation in our established markets means that increasing our output will be met with increased demand for Irish beef. The decline in the national suckler herd that had been evident in recent years seems to be going into reverse, going by the brisk trade for breeding heifers in recent months. Currently there are close to one million suckler cows in this country but there is great potential for these numbers to be increased dramatically, in line with the targeted production levels set out in Food Harvest 2020. There is an air of optimism among beef farmers at this moment. However, if profitability is not maintained at all levels from suckler farms and right through to specialist finishers, then producers will be tempted by alternative enterprises – particularly when milk quota regulations change in 2015. Profit will always be the key driver in any successful beef enterprise, but producers must examine their 16
Irish Simmental Cattle Society
In previous articles, I outlined key nutrition management points for the dry cow period that will ensure cows calve down in the correct body condition and get the production cycle off on the correct footing. Cows should be selected for breeding based on health status, breeding history, production and conformation factors. By doing this, cattle can be bred to deliver better carcass classification and improved feed conversion efficiency. Whether breeding heifers are reared on farm or purchased at weanling stage, it is crucial that they be grown at a rate of 0.8kg/head/day to have them calving as fully grown animals at 24-26 months old. Breeding records of all cows should be maintained to help identify animals with breeding problems and to provide data for making future decisions. When choosing a breeding bull, the first choice that most farmers will make is generally regarding easy calving. Again, managing the body condition of the cow during the dry period can be of greater influence than the calving ease traits of the terminal sire. Breeding bulls should be chosen for traits like growth rate and carcass quality to maximise the efficiency of the weanling for sale or rearing slaughter animals. This has even greater importance since the introduction of the grid payment system. • Nutrition Link offers an independent on-farm nutrition advisory service. • Specialists in ruminant nutrition for all livestock. • Services include: Ration formulation, feed budgeting, crop planning, external feed sourcing Contact us on 0879066478 or 0872227869 nutritionlink1@gmail.com Aonghus Giggins / Gerry Giggins

Simmental Hall of Fame 2011 Tom Joe O`Riordan Simmental Hall of Fame 2011: Mr. Tom Joe O`Riordan, Ballyarra, Castlelyons, Fermoy, Co. Cork
As a member of the Southern Simmental Club, Tom Joe held most executive positions before going on to represent his Club at National level on Council for nine years between 1999 & 2008. Tom Joe served as Treasurer of the Simmental Society for three years.
Tom Joe ran a very progressive dairy herd in Ballyarra and on looking for some diversification studied the merits of Simmental Hall of Fame winner the Simmental breed `11 Tom Joe O`Riordan pictured and in 1984 purchased with Justin McCarthy, Irish Farmhis first Simmental ers Journal female. This heifer was purchased from the “Lowland Herd” of Jackie Hennessey. “Lowland Kass” was sired by “Donner” and out of “Corah Honey”. The first calf registered in Tom Joe’s “Ballyarra” Herd was “Ballyarra Primrose” out of “Lowland Kass” and a “Comber Salus” bull “Lowland Kinte”.
Tom Joe exhibited his Ballyarra progeny at Shows throughout the Country and was a regular exhibitor at sales. Now retired from Pedigree Breeding, the Ballyarra Herd has been amalgamated into his Son William’s ‘Bridgemount Herd’ which has remained to the fore at all Shows and Sales. Tom Joe still plays an active role in the preparation and showing and is a key driver in the progress of the “Bridgemount Simmentals” The Irish Simmental Cattle Society would like to thank Tom Joe & his family for their commitment to Simmental cattle for the last 27 year’s and are happy in the knowledge that his passion for Simmental Cattle and Cork GAA will have him out and about for many years to come.

RDS Champion of Champions Fearna Tiffany The summer of 2011 was a fantastic start for Fearna Simmentals. It began at Roundfort show with Fearna Tiffany, a Milton Lord Tiffany sired cow, claiming the Simmental breed championship. She then went on to win a total of eight breed championships at various shows. The highlight of the show season was winning the senior cow class and overall Simmental Female Champion at The Tullamore National Livestock Show.
Reserve Senior Heifer in Tullamore and numerous breed championships. Also in 2011, Tiffany’s full brother Fearna Anfield was exported across the waters to the Newbie Mains herd in Scotland. We wish them, and all with whom we did business every success. We would like to think that Fearna Tiffany is a fine example of the Simmental breed and that she represented it well, winning all of the Interbreed Championships that she entered. We hope to see her first daughter Fearna Countess Jubilee following in her footsteps, as we The Minister for Agriculture, Mr. Simon Covney and the RDS President can already see many Mr. Fonsie Mealy presenting the RDS Champion of Champions award similarities to Tiffany to Gerry & Mark Neenan at her age.
It was indeed a very proud moment for us when we were informed that, the title of The RDS Champion of Champions was to be bestowed upon Tiffany in Dublin on the 29th of November 2011. We were extremely honoured to be receiving this prestigious award.
The RDS holds very special memories for us, as it was there that we won our first national title in 2003 with Monaduff Jubilee, claiming the Supreme Overall Simmental Champion. Monaduff Jubilee happens to be Fearna Tiffany’s mother. Jubilee, a Brinkton Sovreign sired cow was an excellent animal of extreme size and power and with excellent milking abilities. All of these qualities and traits seem to be passing on to her offspring. We have had great success to date with this family line. To date, Tiffany’s sister Fearna Regal has produced three daughters, Fearna Vienna who claimed National Senior Heifer Champion in 2009 and two more daughters Fearna Aspen and Fearna Baroness who were sold to the Coose herd of John and Ronan Tuohy. We are delighted to see the success that they are enjoying with Fearna Aspen winning 20

Year Book 2012 New Bull for Teagasc Clonakilty Agricultural College Last April we purchased a young Simmental bull to replace a son of OHL (from the Raceview herd) for the spring-calving suckler herd in the Teagasc College in Clonakilty, West Cork. The new bull, Milton Axel, is a son of S699 out of a daughter of ORP. He comes with good ICBF figures and was used for the 2011 breeding season on 25 cows. His first calves are due on the ground in early February 2012. The suckler herd in the College is of modest size, this Spring we are calving down 28 cows and heifers. The breeding profile of the herd has been heavily based on Simmental blood over the years with over two-thirds of the cows having Simmental sires or maternal grandsires. The remainder of the blood lines are mainly Limousin. The herd currently has a Eurostar average of €87 and 4 stars for milk and fertility. Milton Axel - New Stock bull at Clonakilty College The Clonakilty herd is one of the 16 monitor herds under the Teagasc/Irish Farmers Journal BETTER farm program. The angle that is being pursued with the college herd is to breed our own replacement stock while taking the male calves through to bull beef at 16-22 months, depending on the market. I would hope to see the new bull fulfil these requirements as he is currently 5 stars for the beef traits and 3 stars for the daughter traits. By: Keith Kennedy
Winning Season for Commercial Simmental The McPadden Family from Rhode, Co. Offaly had a very successful show season with their Derrough Samual sired commercial Simmental bull calf. He was shown in mixed breed classes throughout the Summer and recorded the following successes: • • • • • •

Simmental Premier Sale Roscommon November 2011
Auroch Banshee ET €17000 Top Price Heifer
Roscommon Premier Sale November 2011 Sire: Hillcrest Champion Dam: Raceview Merle Beauty
Wall Family, Newcastle, Dublin set new record at Simmental Society Sale The Simmental Society November Premier Show & Sale at Roscommon was one of the best ever with a packed ringside staying right to the very end to see a new Society female record price when the Corby Family, Newtowngore paid €17000 for the last lot in the catalogue “Auroch Banshee ET” Peadar Glennon, of the Simmental Society was very pleased with the overall sale and went on to say that “it is very encouraging to see a renewed confidence in the Simmental breed. This is coming from the fact that commercial farmers see the breed as delivering maternally and also the performance of commercial Simmental bulls in feedlots. A notable fact at the sale was the number of Suckler farmers looking for the top quality bulls and prepared to pay €4000 plus for these bulls. Our pedigree females continue to be in strong demand and it was the opinion of many present on Saturday that the quality of the heifers on offer was one of the best for many years”. Top price in the bull section of €6100 went to David Wall, Newcastle, Co. Dublin for his July `10 born bull “Curaheen Buck ET”. This class winner sired by “Curaheen Warrior” and out of a “Cloondroon Nuggett” sired dam “Marsha Wanda” was purchased by James Alexander, Randlestown, Co. Antrim for his Jalex Herd. Second highest price bull went to James & David Wall Jnr, Newcastle, Co. Dublin their “Lamhoj Supery” sired bull “Auroch Bullet” at €5200. By the “Dirnanean Jacob” sired dam “Curaheen Tatiana” this bull went to join the well known “Seafort Herd” of James Costello, Dromard, Co. Sligo. Michael Oliver seller of the top priced maiden receiving his presentation from David Dillon
A red hot trade lead to 100% clearance in each section. Local and national buyers had to compete with buyers from Northern Ireland to secure the quality stock on offer. A new feature of this sale was all cattle were export and BVD tested. This led to buyers having more confidence in purchasing animals at this sale with such a high health status. This sale was sponsored by the Dillon Family, Carrowmore, Sligo in memory of the late Arthur Dillon, who was instrumental in the establishment of this Simmental x sale at Ballymote, which has now been running for the past 16 years and is going from strength to strength year by year. The Arthur Dillon Memorial Cup was presented to the seller of the highest priced animal in the sale. The Western Simmental Club would like to take this opportunity to thank the Dillon Family for their generous sponsorship.

Tullamore Show 2011 Judge’s Report by Mr. Gerard Smith
First of all, on behalf of Morag and myself, I would like to thank the Tullamore Show and the Irish Simmental Society for the opportunity to judge such an outstanding show of Simmental cattle. We were very impressed with the high standard of cattle and all credit must go to the stock people in the way that the cattle were presented at the show. My day started off with a tremendous first class of heifers, a standard which was maintained throughout the day. My female champion and reserve overall was a cow from Neenan Brothers, Fearna Tiffany. She was a big strong cow with plenty of length, good hindquarters and plenty of character with a calf at foot. At only 5 years old I am sure she will have a fantastic show career ahead of her. In reserve was a classy heifer from Garrett Behan with Clonagh Absolutely Fabulous. She had tremendous length, width all the way through and a tremendous backend. She was very good on her legs and walked very well with plenty of character. In the male section I awarded Banwy T-Rex male and overall champion which was also from Garrett Behan. An absolutely tremendous bull, correct on
his legs with good locomotion and brought out to the highest possible standard in ideal condition. I was very impressed when standing behind him with how square across the plates he was with an outstanding second thigh. In reserve male I went for David Wall’s young bull, Curraheen Bossman. A very correct well muscled young bull. I am certain that we will see this bull, along with all the bulls in the first two classes, at the sales next year which we will watch with interest. I would like to congratulate all of the exhibitors and stock people for a superb show of stockmanship and every animal brought out was a huge credit to the breed. Lastly Morag would like to congratulate all of the young handlers on their professionalism in particular Saoirse Oliver for winning the strong young handlers class. Thanks again to everyone concerned for the wonderful hospitality we received during our stay in Tullamore. We were made most welcome and hope to return in the near future.

Year Book 2012 National Livestock Show Champion: Banwy T-Rex This year’s National Livestock Show was without doubt the showing highlight of the year for ourselves with our senior herd sire, Banwy T-Rex not only retaining his national senior and overall male of the year championship, but also he secured his place in history by becoming the first animal in any breed to retain their National Livestock Show Championship for a third year in a row. His retirement from showing was announced during the parade of champions and was sealed with a kiss by National Livestock Show secretary, Freda Kinnarney. As a pedigree breeder there are many moments of greatness you enjoy, some of which you will only encounter once in a life time; a record price, your first championship, your first homebred championship, but for me the highlight so far has been parading this wonderful animal around the parade of champions that afternoon. Although this was T-Rex’s only outing of the year, his progeny have been very busy throughout Ireland and the UK. His first crop of autumn born calves stormed the spring sales with “Clonagh A Superstar” topping the Roscommon premier sale at €10,400 selling to Hazel and Stuart Stronach, Islavale Herd, Scotland. That same day saw “Clonagh Banwy’s Bad Boy” and “Clonagh Brenda Nanda” also head over to the UK. The Tullamore society sale also saw demand for T-Rex bulls with “Clonagh A T Tiger” selling for the second highest price of €4,100. On the show scene we had a very successful year with the aptly named “Clonagh Absolutely Fabulous” retaining her National title winning the intermediate and
reserve overall female title at Tullamore. She teamed up with another T-Rex daughter “Jennalyn Adaline” to be crowned national senior progeny pairs the same day. “Clonagh BMW” and “Jennalyn Brigadier Rose” placed second and third in the National yearling bull championship at the premier sale Roscommon in November. A T-Rex son “Addinstown Caesar” was North East Club Calf Champion and reserve national weanling bull champion in Strokestown, while “Carbery Bandit” was Southern Club September bull champion. Across the water, we were delighted to see T-Rex progeny competing with the best in the UK, “Jennalyn Anora” and “Clonagh Banwy’s Bad Boy” took home a number of red rosettes for their new owners. T-Rex has always received much admiration over the years from the general public at shows and events throughout the country and it is always nice to see familiar faces return to greet us from year to year. His placid nature has always been to his advantage getting plenty of rubs from adults and children alike. One of the most humbling moments of the day at Tullamore was the YISA members helping me get T-Rex ready for his overall championship, many thanks to Ciaran Kinahan, Ronan Touhy, John Conway and Sarah Murray for their help on the left hand side! T-Rex may have retired from the show ring, but we believe his progeny will continue his winning ways and until his show record is beaten he will remain on his throne as the true champion and king of the ring, but most importantly the king of our hearts. In Remembrance Arthur Dillon The death occurred recently of one of nature’s true gentlemen Arthur Dillon. Arthur Dillon was born in Kilbeggan, Co. Westmeath on 15th August 1931. His family supplied milk in the village, ran a shop and farmed land close to the village of Kilbeggan. After completing his primary education in Kilbeggan and his secondary education in Tyrellspass, Arthur went to Warrenstown Agricultural College in 1948 graduating from there in 1949. He spent the next few years working on various farm enterprises in the greater Dublin area before joining the Department of Agriculture as an Agricultural Officer in 1956. His first posting was to Clover Meats in Waterford. A few years later he requested a move nearer to his birthplace. In 1958, the proud owner of a new Ford Anglia, he crossed the Curlew mountains for the first time to take up his appointment in the District Veterinary Office in Sligo. For the next thirty eight years (except for a brief stint in Donegal in the mid sixties) he served the farming community of Sligo/Leitrim from his base in Sligo D.V.O. He witnessed huge changes in the livestock sector as a Department Official – the decline of the village fairs, the arrival of the livestock mart, and the demise of the rural small scale butcher. He also oversaw large numbers of live cattle leaving Sligo port by boat for Scotland and by road to the North of Ireland. As well as his official job Arthur had a huge interest in and ‘gra’ for livestock and had a keen eye for a good beast. After setting up home with his beloved wife Breid on their small holding on the outskirts of Sligo town he bought and sold #
breeding heifers and in- calf heifers for many years. He also began breeding pedigree Hereford cattle in the early 1970’s. Around this time he became involved with the Midland and Western Cattle Improvement Society in Carrick on Shannon. Arthur was sure to be one of the first people you would meet when you arrived at the Carrick bull sales and would always have time for a chat. He never missed a bull sale in February or April and he was President and joint Treasurer on different occasions. He also served as secretary of the Connacht Hereford Club and was on the Hereford Council for two terms. In the late 1980’s he started to breed purebred Simmental cattle showing the love he had for Red and White Cattle. Arthur was a keen cattle judge and could be seen judging Herefords or Simmentals at summer shows. He enjoyed good success breeding Simmentals where he was successful in breeding and exhibiting the All Ireland Simmental Bull Calf Champion at Strokestown show, but he also recognised that there was a home and export market for crossbred Simmental heifers for breeding. Arthur was instrumental along with other committee members of the Western Simmental Club in the setting up of the Simmental x Sale in Ballymote mart. They organised the first Crossbred Simmental sale in Ballymote Mart in October 1995 and this now is an annual event going from strength to strength each year. Perhaps the most memorable time of Arthur’s career in farming and cattle was in August 2000 when the World Simmental Congress spent a day on his farm. It was a most enjoyable time for him. Arthur also served as treasurer of the Western Simmental Club and at the time of his death was the club president. Arthur is survived by his beloved wife Breid, son David, daughters, Rosemary & Ann, Daughter in Law Éilis and Grandchildren, Eimear& Rory. May his gentle soul rest in peace.

North Eastern Simmental Club Report 2011 The Premier Sale in Roscommon started off slow but picked up well as younger bulls and heifers were a good trade with some Club members getting on very well. John Dunne got €4100 for his Milton Lord Tiffany sired bull and Joe Brady sold a Drumnagar Terror sired bull for €3000.
There was a very strong trade at the second spring in Tullamore and Club member Elizabeth Ormiston sold her 13 month old bull for €2700. Also in May the Tully Bull sale took place with small number of Simmental bulls on test selling very well, Club members cattle also sold well with Paul Mc Ardle selling his Cairnview Snazzy bull for €3400. The highlight of the year was our show season with our qualifying shows held at Dundalk, Bailieborough, Longford, Arva, Castleblaney, Cloone and Tydavent and Mohill. We had a very good display of cattle at our club finals at Virigina show.
In August Teagasc and the North Eastern Club had an open evening on Joe Brady’s farm. There was a great display of Simmental cattle. It opened suckler farmers’ eyes to what Simmental had to offer. In September Sean Mc Garry was elected to Council in replace of Thomas Donohoe who resigned from Council. This year’s Ploughing Championship went very well. Paul Mc Ardle, Noel Woods, Chris White and Joe Mc Garry represented the club with cattle at this event. At Roscommon in November, the autumn Premier sale was an excellent trade throughout. Noel Woods sold his in calf Heifer for €3700 and John Canty sold his bull for €2700. Our AGM and dinner was held in the Kilmore Hotel Cavan on Friday night the 2nd of December. Noel Woods won “Show Herd of the Year”. A good night was enjoyed by all.
The Senior Male Champion was Colmcille Bestmate owned by GeariodMulligan . The Senior Female Champion was Brookwood Beauty ET owned by Noel Woods. The Junior Female Champion Clonguish Clara owned by Joe Mc Garry and Junior Male Champion was Addinstown Caeser owned by David Caffery who went on to win the overall Club Champion with Clonguish Clara in Reserve. I would like to thank the members for exhibiting their stock. The National Finals were held at Tullamore Show. The Club was well represented at this Show. Joe Mc Garry’s heifer Clonguish Bluebell won the Junior Heifer class. Noel Woods heifer Brookwood Beauty ET was 2ndin the yearling class. David Caffery was 3rdin the junior cow class and January bull calf class

Southern Simmental Club Report 2011 Once again, Southern Club members had a great year both in the sales rings and on the show scene. Excellent prices were achieved for both pedigree and commercial Simmental cattle, reflecting increased confidence in the Beef sector. Pedigree Simmental cattle not alone sold well in Ireland but many sold went to Northern Ireland, England, Scotland and Wales. The Southern Club AGM was held in February 2011. Mr John Murphy, Knockane Simmentals was elected as Chairman, Mr John Finnegan, Leeherd Simmentals as Secretary and Ms. Ava O’Leary, Seaview Simmentals as Treasurer. Once again, our Bull Sale was held at Cork Marts Bandon, where Mr William O’Riordan, Bridgemount Simmentals had the Champion and good prices were achieved. The Club continues to enjoy great support from our sponsors which is much appreciated. McDonnell Brothers sponsored our September Calf Final. This final was held at Barryroe Show. Our judge on the day was Mr Gerry Linehan. As usual, there was a high quality turnout of animals for the event. Results: Southern Club McDonnell’s September Bull Final: First – Keith Vickery, Carbery Simmentals Southern Club McDonnell’s September Heifer Final: First – Peter O’Connell, Raceview Simmentals Our January Calf Final sponsored by Southern Mills was held in Bantry and was judged by Mr David Hazelton from Northern Ireland. Teagasc held a Field Evening at Mr Ger Dineen’s farm in Kilnamartra, Co Cork in August 2011. Michael Bourke from Teagasc gave an outline of the cattle on Ger’s farm and Ms. Rose Goulding from Munster AI spoke on aspects of Simmental cattle breading. Brochures and leaflets were distributed to the large crowd in attendance. A big thank you to our host farmer and to all who attended. Ger is very keen to promote Simmental cattle and we thank him for his support. All who attended were of the agreement that the quality of Simmental animals on display were of a tremendous standard & a credit to the Dineen Family. In October, Peter O’Connell & Family, of Raceview Simmentals held their 4th Production sale at Corrin Mart, Fermoy. The sale proved to be a huge success with animals exported to Northern Ireland & mainland UK. We congragulate the O’Connell Family on their success. The club would like to thank Mr John Murphy for his good work in representing the Simmental Society at ICBF meetings throughout the year. 94

Clonagh & Jennalyn Open Day
A Simmental Open Day was held on the farm of Garrett & Lyndsey Behan, Ballyfin, Portlaoise on Saturday 4th June 2011. This event was very well attended by breeders from all over the country. The afternoon kicked off with a stock judging event with three groups of cattle; four working cows, four maiden heifers by Banwy T-Rex and four ET full brothers by Banwy T-Rex. Master judge for the day was Joe Wilson, Ballinlare Farm Herd, Northern Ireland who kindly travelled down with his wife Phyllis for the day. A bonus prize was also given for the closest weight guess on the herds junior herd sire, Clonagh Armani who was also on display in the main yard. While the score cards were being added, the crowd were given a tour of the main herd divided into various batches with commentary being given on each breeding cow by Garrett. With docility being a major focus of the herd, this was well demonstrated by both cows and calves very curious about their many admirers (apart from a certain camera shy Cork lady!). The two herd sires Banwy T-Rex and Clonagh Wonderboy were both seen running with the herd and very much in their working clothes. Calves on displays were by Banwy T-Rex, Marblehill Liam, Cairnview Snazzy, Samark Superman and Omorga Volvo. Pat Donnellan and Martina Moran from ICBF were also present to answer any questions regarding Herd Plus and kindly provided a Suckler Cow herd report to accompany the herd brochure.
Refreshments were kindly sponsored by Charles Wynne Feeds and much appreciated by all after a long day. Society President, Tom O’Riordan, commended the Behan and Stone families on the excellent facilities provided for visitors, as well as the cattle presented and praised the obvious knowledge and passion Garrett has for his cattle and the Simmental breed. Stock judging results as follows: Senior: 1st. Paddy Bones 2nd Padraig Gallagher 3rd Ger Fogerty Intermediate: 1st Craig Stone 2nd Thomas Briody 3rd Shane Gilsenan Junior: 1st Claire O’Connell 2nd Sean and David Brady (joint winners) 3rd Sarah Fegan Guess the weight of the bull: Philip Fennelly The Behan family would like the thank Peadar for all of his help in organising this event and our generous sponsors Sligo AI, Thomas Hoyne and Charles Wynne Feeds and our Master Judge, Joe and Phyllis Wilson. Year Book 2012 South Western Club Report Roscommon Spring Sale Denis O’Halloran got the year off to a good start for the club with his Kilbride Farm Newry heifer Tulla Beauty winning Champion Yearling Heifer and exported to England to join Ian & Julie Turvey’s Shannock Herd. Beauty went on to be shown successfully this past summer in the UK. Honors on the day also went to John & Ronan Touhy with their first prize winning incalf heifer Coose Amy sired by stock bull Raceview Samson. Summer Shows First Show of the Summer was the Kingdom County Fair in Tralee, with Veteran breeder John Kenny as Judge. Fearna Aspen was tapped forward for the overall Champion Simmental for the Touhy’s. Then on to Newcastle West Show on a rather rainy day, again Fearna Aspen was champion and Towerhill Bella-Trixie was placed in reserve. Clare County Show in Ennis was our Third show, champion here was Coose Amy, with Martin Doohans Highstreet Crunchie taking the male championship. National Show Tullamore Show the highlight of the showing calendar, for the National Simmental Show. Here the Touhy Family did the club proud, when Fearna Aspen was placed Reserve National Senior Heifer Champion in one of the most anticipated heifer classes of the day. There was an excellent display of top quality Simmental cattle at Tullamore show and it was a credit to all involved. Club Finals Cappamore Show the home of our club finals and with the change of showday from a Wednesday to a Saturday, our entries suffered slightly. None the less the club was out in force to put on a top display of Simmentals for Judge Seanie McGarry. This was the first show outing for new breeders Joe & James Kelly of the Mount Herd in Co Clare, after purchasing “Luddenmore Willow”, the champion incalf heifer at the autumn Roscommon sale, showing her Samark Superman sired calf Mount Carlos. Over-all Champion went to Fearna Aspen and the reserve was Luddenmore Candy Rosebud for Dr. Michael Sheahan. This year we introduced a club young stock person class, first place went to Ronan Touhy, second and third went to Christopher and James Waller, James Kelly in fourth and Rory Cunningham in fifth, well done to all who took part and hope to see you all out showing again this summer ! 116

We are fortunate to have the continued support from some of our sponsors over the last twenty Commercial Breeding Heifer Sale With entries hard got for other sales, we were delighted to achieve an over-all entry of around one hundred heifers for our 11th annual sale in Gort Mart. As always, it took place on the first Thursday evening in November. Our judge on the night was Declan Donnelly, who had the task of choosing a Champion incalf, Maiden and weanling heifer.

Year Book 2012 section, she weighted 470kgs - €1,560. Next highest was John Joe Shiels’ maiden heifer, 555kgs - €1,450. Finally our biggest and probably the best quality section was from the weanling heifers. Here champion and highest price went to a Feb ‘11 Raceview Van Helen sired heifer out of a Derrough Samual sired dam owned by Thomas Cormician. This heifer carried an ICBF ear tag, deeming her a five star breeding heifer, 425kgs - €1,390. weanling heifers sold from €400 up to €1,000 along with their weight. Special mention must be giving to our club secretary and council representative Martin Doohan. Year after year Martin is responsible for the organising and smooth running of out Gort sale. We thank Martin for his work and credit to him on a sale that is going from strength to strength. Our 2012 sale date has been set for two weeks earlier on the 18th of October, we have also made it a condition of entry that all heifers be tested BVD negative. Roscommon Premier Sale November Another good sale for the club. Seamus Aherne’s 10mth old bull Towerhill Christy, out of the home bred dam Melissa, was placed first in his class and later went on to sell for €5,100 to Gerald and Morag Smith of the well know Drumsleed Herd in Scotland. Denis O’Halloran had another great sale with his Jan ‘11 bull Tulla Cathal taking second prize in his class and his three Yearling Heifers Tulla Barbie, Tulla Barbara and Yearling Heifer Champion Tulla Blossom selling for €2,350, €2,700 & €4,900 respectively. Our year drew to a close with Helen Davis retiring from council. We thank Helen for her time given and for representing the club over the last six years. She was replaced on council by Jennie Aherne and we wish her well in her time on council.
