Electrify your garden fence – how does it work? When connecting the + and – wires, an animal will receive a small shock. The bottom wire (-) serves an earthing function. For example when a cat climbs the fence, it will contact this bottom wire with it’s back paws. The front paws will contact the wire above (+), thus closing the electric circuit. This causes a shock reaction, deterring the cat from attempting to scale the fence again.

Imagine: a branch falls against your fence. The power is conducted to the earth via the branch, and does not flow through the rest of the fence. The closest fence monitor registers this loss of power and communicates this to the energizer. The energizer communicates the error message to the external display. You can then see in which zone the fault has occurred. The extra alarm accessories are optional. In addition to the external display, a message can also be sent to the telephone (via the text-messaging module). As an alternative, a siren can sound or a light can flash via the alarm controller.

The error message is followed by a repair. You can see via the external display, the telephone or the remote control in which zone a fault has occurred. The remote control will help you find the exact location of the fault in the zone. To repair the fence, you can turn the power off by switching it off via the remote control or telephone. Save more than 65% on your running costs A pasture season lasts 6 months (180 days) on average. It has been found that users of battery energizers need 2 batteries per pasture season on average. The expected life of the battery in the B40, at random / half capacity (0.2J) / night saving mode, is as much as 555 days! That is spectacular. In spite of this super saving mode, the tension on the fence is the same as that of an average energizer. With a B40 you only need 0.3 battery per pasture season at this setting. This saving mode is particularly suitable for trained animals, which are used to electric fences.

Measure the length of your corner posts. Determine the height of your fence on the basis of the wire heights. The difference of length and height of the fence is the depth of the post in the ground. Drill a hole with a ground drill (Figure 2). Make sure that the corner post is fitted at an angle of 5

degrees against the pulling direction (Figure 3). Depending on the distance between the corner posts, we would recommend fitting a ground bar (figure 3). Use this when the distance is more than 100m. Fit the corner insulators if necessary (Insultimber posts do not require insulators).
Step 4: Assembly •

First fit the corner posts. Attach the conductor to the corner post and tension it. The intermediate posts can now easily be fitted parallel to the conductor. Fit the intermediate posts. The distance between posts can vary from 7 to 40 metres, depending on the used materials and the landscape. For multi-wire fences special intermediate posts can be used. They provide the correct wire distance, but do not go into the ground. Measure the distance between the corners and fit the intermediate posts in such a way that the distance between posts is the same.
Tension spring: reduces costs The tension spring will keep the wire always tense and elastic, whether the weather is hot or cold. If you use tension springs, you can double the distance between posts. That helps to keep the costs down. Moreover, the corner posts will stay in place for longer, and you will have less maintenance work on the fence.

Tension the wire effortlessly with the rotating tensioner
Tension the conductors with the tensioners you have chosen (rotating tensioners (High Tensile / equifence), corner insulator tape (Tape), end tensioner kit (Cord). The correct tension is important to ensure that when an animal touches the fence, it gets an electric shock immediately. This makes it more of a psychological barrier to the animal. Fit the wires onto the intermediate posts and connect the different wires with wire clips.

Step 6: Fitting the energizer and earthing
What does an earthing system look like?
For proper earthing you will need an earthing rod of 2m (for battery energizers you need an earthing rod of 1m), an earthing clip and double-insulated cable. If you need more than one earthing rod, they should be fitted at least three metres apart. If you have sandy soil or very dry soil, we would recommend providing extra earthing or using the special Bentonite earthing mixture.

Why is earthing necessary and how does it work? An electric fence is a closed-loop system through which an electric current moves. It consists of an energizer, a fence wire which transports the current, insulators that make sure that the current does not flow away into the earth, and proper earthing. The earthing ensures that the current can flow back to the energizer when an animal touches the fence. This causes the shock effect.

Measure whether there is a current of more than 3000 Volt on the fence wire, at least 100 metres removed from the earthing system. Then create a short circuit at the same position, so that there is less than 1000 Volt on the fence. You can create a short circuit by putting iron posts against the wire. Measure the current on the earthing system. If this is more than 300 Volt, fit more earthing rods and repeat the test.

Other installation tips for a permanent fence insulator
Flood Gate controlleR Accessory for ditches, which can be fitted into the fence. It stops conductivity in the bottom wire when water (or another conductor) reaches that wire. The remainder of the fence is still live. It has a resistance of 5600Ohm. Ask your Gallagher dealer for the options for installing the flood gate controller.
passages A passage should be easy to close, while also properly conducting the current. The fence should also be under power when the passage is open. For that purpose, the power must be conducted underground by means of a ground cable. Gallagher has several options for making a gate. Well-known are the gate grips combined with gate grip anchors. A new option is the multi-wire passage set. This allows you to open and close the gate with one hand. We also have an electric gate in our product range. Passage set Gallagher is introducing the multi-wire passage set. This is an all-in-one set for creating a passage. Available in 2 or 4 wire tape (6 and 8m respectively).

Step 1: Put the reel corner post into place and attach the wire reels. Step 2: Take the wires to the other side and attach them to a corner post. Make sure that the wire reels are not blocked by lifting the lock. Step 3: Pick up the posts and walk back to the reels, fitting a post every 10m. Hook the wires at the required height. The Gallagher Vario post, stirrup post and sheep post have numbers, so that you can remember the wire heights. Step 4: Tension the wires at the wire reel and connect them to a battery or battery energizer, or to an existing permanent fence, by means of a multi-reel cable set.

6. Maintenance tips & tricks
How do I maintain my fence? We know from experience that a well-fitted Gallagher fence can last for as long as 30 years! How? By regularly inspecting the fence and doing a bit of maintenance if necessary. We will be pleased to help you extend your fence's life. We have written a number of tips on how to maintain your tape, cord or wire fence. They can be carried out simply and quickly. Follow them up and preserve your fence and protect your animals 72

We advise you to inspect your energizer/fence every year. If you are unable to rectify a possible fault you can get help from one of our experts (see www.gallaghereurope.com). He can help you locate the fault and advise you on making changes to your fence.
If your fence is properly insulated, it should have a tension of at least 3,000V. The following minimum values apply by law: • horses/cattle 1,500V • young cattle 2,000V • sheep 3,000V For a carefree fence, we recommend that you have at least 3000V at the end of the fence.
Winter maintenance You can preserve a 9V battery during the winter months by closing the air holes at the top. This will stop the chemical process. When you start using it again you remove the sticker, and the battery will supply power again. A 12V battery energizer will also discharge during the winter when it is not in use, which can lead to damage. It is recommended to connect the energizer to a battery charger during the winter. This will keep your energizer in top condition. This charger is available under art. no.: 056707 Or use our Optima battery energizers: little or no maintenance!
Legal regulations In addition to the fact that your energizer must meet the safety standards, your fence must also comply with a number of conditions: • • • • •
Check your fence regularly: • Are the wires still properly tensioned? Tension them if necessary. • Have you inspected the connections? Loose connections cause a lot of loss, and can also mean that part of your fence is without power. • Make sure that all the posts are still standing solidly and that the wood has not rotted. Posts tend to rot just above ground level. Replace half-rotted posts to prevent your animals from breaking through the fence during the season. • Along public roads, there should be warning signs every 50m. Check whether they are still there. • Inspect the gate grips and replace any damaged ones. This will prevent any undesirable current surges. • Measure your earthing: see page 66 for testing your earthing.
Gallagher Check
•
You should not use more than one energizer on a fence at the same time. The energizer’s earthing must be at least 10m away from the earthing of the mains. Try to avoid having electric fence wires running under or parallel to the overground high-voltage cables or telephone cables. If crossing is unavoidable, make the angle near the conductors as straight as possible. If an electric fence is adjacent to accessible walking paths, warning signs must be used every 50m (which must be 200mm x 100mm, with a letter size of 25mm). The distance between two electric fences must be at least 2m.

The SmartFix has some astonishing features. It is a combined voltage and amperage meter. It is easy to measure the performance of your fence with the SmartFix, and it will measure the amperage and so trace a short circuit in your fence. The arrow on the display points you in the direction of the short circuit. This will help you find the cause of the fault very quickly, which saves on time and annoyance. The SmartFix is suitable for any conductor, from smooth wire to 40mm tape. Never use the SmartFix to measure tension on the energizer, but only on the fence itself, at a distance of at least 10 metres from the energizer.

Gallagher energizer calculator By means of a simple calculation you can work out which energizer is most suitable for your fence. Multiply the values that correspond to the parts of which your fence consists (for instance, if you want a mains energizer, write down the value 1). You can compare the result in Joules with the charging energy in Joules that an energizer can produce (see p. 77-79). Then choose an energizer which gives the same or a higher charging energy when you compare it with the result of the calculation.

THE BEST Conductors

500m
For fences longer than 500m Light metal conductors The TurboLine conductors have a mixture of stainless-steel and light metal wires. Stainless steel is strong and break resistant, but it is not so good as a current conductor. Light metal, such as copper, on the other hand is a very good conductor but less durable. By combining these two current conductors (a Gallagher invention) a conductor with the best properties excellent conductivity and a high level of durability - is produced. It conducts 40x better than a standard conductor. TurboLine products can be recognised by the red wires.
The best plastics • In addition to the best possible conductivity, the TurboLine products also have the best structure. • Monofilaments combined with a soft filling (e.g. cord of 6+mm) provide optimum visibility. • The braided structure prevents stretching and entanglement. • Its low breaking force of only 225kg prevents injuries. • The longest possible life, with a 7-year UV guarantee.

Safe white or terra plastic cable.
EquiFence A conductive plastic cable, developed specially for horse fences. Gallagher guarantees a product guarantee of at least 10 years on EquiFence. This is the most durable and safe Gallagher fence for horses. It consists of an elastic cable with a galvanised core. The 3mm thick plastic casing protects the horse against the zinc-aluminium core. The plastic casing has been made conductive by means of three carbon lines. Fitting a Gallagher EquiFence is a job for experts, which is why you can ask the Gallagher assembly teams to do this for you.
