Ask about our vision for the next 10 years. We are ready for another decade of international education in Zhuhai.
Greetings from Zhuhai International School. This year we begin a new decade of learning and growing on our scenic campus on Qi'ao island. We are proud of who we have become and now set our eyes on continued success and excellence in the coming years, renowned as a leader in international education in Zhuhai. Our success results from the care and commitment invested in our students and programmes by an experienced and diverse staff. Inspired by a passion for meaningful and lasting learning and framed by the holistic, student centered philosophies of the IB, our programmes bring students and teachers together to encounter big ideas while developing the knowledge and skills needed to uncover deep understanding. I trust the contents of this booklet offer a glimpse into the spirit and values that define life at our school. We look forward to sharing more of our campus with you in the near future. Warm regards,
Andrew VanderMeulen Head of School

rs a e Y y l Ear 5 3 Young learners are intelligent, resourceful, and creative individuals who grow, develop and learn at different rates. They explore their environment and learn about their world through play and relationships with peers, teachers, family and community members. Early learning in the PYP is a holistic experience that integrates socio-emotional, physical and cognitive development. The Early Years classrooms are designed to foster curiosity and motivation. Play defines the foundation of their learning experiences, allowing them to practice inventiveness in their thinking and to develop their problem solving skills. In their daily interactions young learners establish and sustain positive relationships with their teachers and peers. They make friends and learn how to cooperate and to solve social problems. They learn to manage their feelings and to regulate their behaviours in a vibrant and caring environment. Learning in Early Years sets the foundation for literacy and mathematical skills. The joy of reading, the fascination of writing, and the wonders of shapes, patterns, time and data all underlie the discoveries they encounter each week.
Prim ary 5- 11 The Primary Years Programme is designed for young learners. It focuses on the development of the whole child as an inquirer, both in the classroom and in the world outside. It is a framework within which teachers and students inquire into six main subject areas organized by themes of global significance. Primary students build knowledge and skills over the years of the PYP in six subjects: • language • social studies • mathematics • arts • science • personal, social and physical education The IB’s student-centred programmes promote healthy relationships, ethical responsibility and personal challenge. Learning in the IB allows for growth in a broad range of human capacities and responsibilities that go beyond intellectual development and academic success. The PYP empowers young learners to think, to create, to ask questions, and to seek answers. Our goal for the PYP student is that they become active, caring, lifelong learners. We believe it is vital for them to demonstrate respect for themselves and others and that they have the capacity and inspiration to participate in the world around them.

MYP 6 1 11 The Middle Years Programme is designed for students aged 11 to 16. It provides a framework of learning that encourages students to become creative, critical, and reflective thinkers. At ZIS, the MYP emphasizes intellectual challenge, encouraging students to make connections between the real world and their studies in these eight subjects: - Design - Language & Literature - Language Acquisition - Sciences - Individuals & Societies - Physical and Health - Mathematics Education Study in the MYP fosters the development of skills for communication, intercultural understanding, and global engagement—essential qualities for young people who are becoming global leaders. MYP assessment standards are consistent around the world. Teachers structure varied and valid assessment tasks so that students can demonstrate achievement according to objectives defined by the IB. Importantly, tasks are assessed against established criteria, not against the work of other students.
The MYP aims to help students develop their personal understanding, their emerging sense of self, and their responsibility to community. Â
The curriculum is organized with appropriate attention to: teaching and learning in context conceptual understanding approaches to learning service as action language and identity
ZIS students are eligible for the MYP Certificate upon successful completion of the eAssessments in the final year of the programme. These innovative assessments focus on conceptual understanding and the ability to apply knowledge in complex, unfamiliar situations. They offer robust and reliable assessment of student achievement in the MYP.
The MYP provides students opportunities to develop the knowledge, attitudes and skills they need in order to be critical and creative thinkers, to manage complexity, and to take responsible action for the future.

DP 8 1 16 The IB Diploma Programme is an academically challenging and balanced programme of education with final examinations that prepares students for success at university and in life beyond. At ZIS the programme addresses the intellectual, social, emotional, and physical well-being of students. University acceptances tell the story of how the DP is recognized and respected by the world's leading schools. DP students select one course from each of six subject groups and these are studied over two years. The groups (I-V) are joined by the three parts of the DP core (a-c): I. Language and Literature V. Mathematics II. Language Acquisition VI. The Arts III. Individuals and Societies a. Extended Essay IV. Sciences b. Theory of Knowledge c. Creativity, Activity, and Service Assessments are set by the IB and project work is assessed by our IB trained teachers. Courses conclude with final examinations that are graded by IB examiners.
The marks awarded for each course range from 1 to 7 and students can gain up to three additional points through the extended essay and theory of knowledge.
Teaching and learning in the Diploma Programme develops: thinking skills communication skills social skills self-management skills research skills The DP challenges students to excel in their studies and in their personal development. We want our graduates to be well-rounded students who respond to challenges with optimism and an open mind. Study in the DP at ZIS prepares students to apply what they learn in real-world, complex, and unpredictable situations. To attain these goals, our teaching staff explicitly help students learn how to develop the attitudes and skills they need to be creative, critical, and reflective thinkers.
Universities value the rigour and consistency of the Diploma Programme and we take pride in opening these doors and assisting our students as they pursue excellence in their passions at schools across the world.
