BRIEF I SPECIFIATION When we talk about libraires, we generally associate libraries with acquiring books, learning/studying, gaining information, using a computer etc. These are the conventional generic libraries found around the world, and I want to create a library that is distinctively unique, challenging and different by including the following features; an outdoor pavilion near the library, a café with a special Japanese-train-delivery service, which will deliver food right to your desk without you having to get up, a social indoor and outdoor space, and a separate children's section where they may read books and make noise without disturbing everyone else who are inside of the facility. Regarding the overall structure, the library, to have the themes of linear and organic. Combining these two distinct themes may appear unsuitable at first, but it will ultimately produce a new and unique design that is The different from many other libraries, and that it would also make this more challenging for me. -

The themes that I will be going for is linear and organic. Combining organic structures with linear seems rather difficult because there is no correlation in design between them, but I think this can be a way to create something unique and different from most other forms of architecture.

-

I would like to include a Japanese-style food train delivery service, which you can order food straight from your desk and it will arrive next to desk to pickup rather than having to get up and order it from the café.

-

I would like the structure to be around 2 – 3 floors tall with high ceilings,

-

A café included inside of the library,

-

A pavilion,

-

Modern public spacing design,

-

Natural lighting in the library, having tall windows, or a glass globe on the top of the room,

-

Have a children’s section inside of the library which is segregated,

-

Have parking area for both visitor and employees,

Brief and Specification

02 I

The location I’ve chosen is in a section of Hyde Park; essentially, I’ll occupy an open space and build a library, complete with an outdoor social space and a pavilion. Using this section of Hyde Park will be beneficial to the people who live nearby, as the park appears to be quite empty. I conducted a quick brief analysis on the area and realised that I it is densely populated, with the majority of residents that often visit the park are universities students, since there is a university right outside of the park. And assuming most are busy with work, this will provide a pleasant environment. I have two themes for my library, linear and organic, also the design will be modern. This combination of linear and organic doesn’t seem appropriate but this will ultimately create a new and unique design, far different from anything else. Back -

Social space

The location’s perimeter is 470 M; 100 L/110 L, 130 H. I believe that this much space is enough for me to construct this whole library which will include a pavilion. There are quite a few trees surrounding the area, but I think it wouldn’t effect the environment to destroy a couple that would be necessary to make the structure. I will be also thinking about the public space surrounding it, and hopefully detailing it later on this project, since it’s a specification requirement.

Front -

Here I've created a site model on sketch-up showcasing in detail how the space will look like. As you can see, I have a highlighted section which shows where I’m going to be making my library. This model helps me figure out how the location actually works, as you can see I also added the necessary surroundings in the backgrounds to show the residential space. I also have an inverted image which shows the pathways for the site, this also gives a much better understanding for the site. This analysis is beneficial for me to fully understand in what space I’m building.

Final Layout -

In this layout I decided to have the pavilion on the top, overhanging. If my pavilion was to be tall, it would be seen from far and would get people’s notices instantly whilst also creating nice simple formation. The Library is seen right from the front, making easy access for anyone entering. I have the social outdoor space right besides the library making easy access for anyone entering.

For this layout in particular I went for something more bizarre. Here I made so the library will be at the top and the pavilion on the other side, showcasing that side instead. I decreased the size of the social space, reason being that I think there is enough space on the lawn to add something else if anything comes onto my mind.

I went in a complete different route for this layout, I made so that the pavilion increases detrimentally in size. This also creates a much bigger overhang on the edge providing more space to look out on the elevated ground. The social space appears to be roughly the same size as the first one, but this time a bit different. The library also has this new space to it, showing more of its back side, and a new entrance which is enigmatic.

Here is my final layout design idea, this will be a great way to visualise where my building should perhaps go, I’ll also need to look into the sun orientation and other factors to fully secure this.

This is the outer edge of Hyde park (west) where all the residential buildings are located right besides it. I initially made this to successfully get understanding of different locations within the vicinity of Hyde park to have possible site locations for my library.

South Understanding of where the sunlight comes from, and what space it covers.

With these other possible locations, I looked into where mainly it would be suitable for people to arrive to the structure more easily (a beneficial way to gain more people inside). The other location within the site that I’m building my library one is a very popular, dense located section, one benefit it has over this is that there is a station right besides it, which allows instant access for those who want come to the library.

And the sun orientation to see the shadow it creates – experimenting.

Some ariel photos of Hyde park with a projection of the sun orientation, this will help with my shadows and where the structure entrance would be placed and other things on that e.g, natural lighting as I've required this in my specification.

Another thing being that is place is filled with too many trees, and there isn’t enough open space to supposedly see the design of my structure.

Plan black and white drawing of Hyde park, this shows all the pathways without having the contrast of the other colours interfering – helps understand site furthermore.

This showcases the whole site in general in grey-scale. This embraces the main road to the pathways in the park.

Here I removed all the pathways, roads, main roads to showcase the buildings surrounding the site in greater detail.

DESIGN CONCEPTS I Here, I created some basic design concepts that I would later use for inspiration and to get a general sense of the structure. Initially, I was drawn to larger rectangular structures, but I soon realized how uninteresting the overall design is. I look at several other structures that have texture but have the general form of a rectangle. Here I discovered a counter that seemed to have the aspects of that I was searching for. I believe I can utilise this structure and how it functions. As we know, a container can also be stacked on top off each-other in massive ships. So, I had the idea to stack these rectangular, textured shapes on top off each-other in different ways to create a new shape, exactly that I’ve done with the models below showcasing how it can be achieved with many other shapes and doesn’t necessarily have to be the shape length or size to create a new existing idea. On the right side I made a few drawings a model of a shipping container, I also did research on the interior and how it can be hold and placed, and different key elements of the structure itself. After gathering this research, I can finally visualise a basic form in mind to create which can be altered with different type of research that I do later on, making so that I create something that is different from many other structures that architects usually create (less-repetitive).

I also gave a glance of my other projects that I’ve done and seen that I also used the shipping containers as research well before, and the designs that I previously made. This itself will help me create something far different, more or less developing furthermore from that overall shape, creating something entirely new and fresh. Since I have different aspects to my building and other parts such as the terrain, pathways, and other structures included, I will also have to do separate research on that. But still sustaining this research, I will use it as way to make the entire design the same, or maybe connect them together using bridges or other architecturally structured way. Finally, in conclusion this these designs concepts will be beneficial for me later when in designing and the making of my design ideas, final models, etc. when finally achieved I will look back from this point and see how much I developed from this basic design concept to get a start in what I’m making (a foundation). I constructed some basic design ideas, using the research above of a shipping container. For the shipping container II researched about the interior and how it is structured and made to be secure and safe. I also saw some more pictures of it broken down and decided to draw them for ideas, references or just to get an idea. I also made different sections of the shipping containers using the research that I obtained and saw different type of elements used, which would be used for inspiration later on down the line. On the model making part, I took some wood blocks, with someone having the rectangular appearance and used them, I also used many other different types of shapes and sizes of a rectangular shape and used it. After using it, I stacked them together to create new ideas, and basically a new form, and then I later combined them together and made drawings showcasing how I fused models to create new initial ideas.

PATUKA ARCHITECTS I LINEAR HOUSE

Design Breakdown-

I looked at this particular piece called the “Linear House”, using the design concept as foundation, and my appropriate themes which include linear, I decided to use this as research. I found the structure to be unique in particular compared to over so called “linear’ structures. That being said it has these fenders on the side which perhaps could stop, or redirect wind and aesthetically speaking isn’t seen throughout most conventional linear buildings; this building also consists of large proportional windows, the front seems to have that ‘stacked’ concept (layered to create a strong top), and finally, that the overall building is elegant. This research would start as a base to increase my knowledge and understanding on linear structures so I’ll have a strong foundation on linear on the theme “linear”. This is a design breakdown; I analysed the parts of the structure (linear house) and broke them down into different parts that I like about this structure. Here you can see I took out elements of the structure that I would use as research and inspiration. The overall shape is square and rectangle, as my themes of linear. The shape has this fenders which most likely relocates the wind when it hits the surface of it. This I could implement in my design to make it more functional, and I can orientate it to my liking to change the direction of wind if needed. Experimenting -

Stacked design experimentation, here I thought of a linear stacked formation to a balance with just blocks.

Top -

Here I created more advanced linear elevations. I used layout to create these professional models. Here I demonstrated the usage of linear objects, and how I managed to use it in these different models. I learnt that linear can be in any shape and sizes and can be at any angle or direction, but I should obtain the similar shape (square or rectangle) in order to keep the linear theme going ahead.

Side -

Front -

Here I made a quick sketch of a linear drawing that I made, here I tried to stack it in together to create this abstract shape. I tried to make it different as possible, I tried orientating the linear pattern in opposite direction to this cross-section effect which appears to be quite complex. Hopefully, I will try to use some of these techniques in order to create my exterior. And then in my final design I will have to try and combine this with an organic shape to see what I will end up with.

Card Models Experimenting (Linear)

Model - 07

I created these linear models, every single one of those models from 01 – 07 are development processes. I started off quite relatively simply, developing it in each process by adding additional new features that would vary it. I added more triangle shapes, slopes and bended pieces to create diversity. By doing so I made three individual drawings by combining a few shapes together to create stacked designs.

I made a few sketch-up models showcasing the stacked designs. I created a process of stacked designs getting a visual representation. I then created a cluster of a stacked pieces on top of each-other to create this design which I will use as development or inspiration. Finally I have created a perspective and elevation drawing of an idea of a stacked design, here you can see I used the stacked design to my advantaged by adding support.

Here I created a process of designs to a final design. Here you can see I made very different designs with inspiration taken from my models. I made various designs which have the element of stacked but is distinct and different from each-other.

Here is another design that I’ve created, here you can see it’s much simpler but works in relation of a stacked design, I will be further developing this and adding more research, so far this is an experiment to see what works best.

Once those design created, and the experimentation on the left side complete, I used it to create more designs behalf on that as development and created a linear structure (sketch-up)

07 I

Secondary Research AZR, Heydar Aliyev

ZAHA HADID ARCHITECTS I HEYDAR ALIYEV CENTRE I’ll be using the Heydar Aliyev as a base to start my organic research – the exterior has a smooth organic shape which overlaps on each-other to create this melted chocolate effect. It consists of many curves and bulges which creates this arbitrary shape which is structured to be connected to the ground. The curvature also has lines which is a way to bend It smoothly on a large scale. This building in particular has elements which really fits the shape of exterior that I’m going to be developing. This research is really important, this allows me to further expand my design and create a better overall design, and also use some elements of this research for other type of work

Concept - 01 Design Breakdown -

Perspective Drawing -

Concept - 02

Concept - 03

In this sketch-up model I tried to make different type of curvature designs. But I added the aspect of linear to it, this will create an illusion of a curvature design but instead it makes it much more easier to build and looks more appealing in the end result. This will also affect the buildings interior making it much more suitable for other rooms near the exterior.

A design breakdown of the structure, here I picked out elements of the structure that outstands the rest. Here I talked particularly looked at the slope design, I think what stands out from linear is having those curvature shapes and to implement that would be rather difficult, but this is what I think could be a way to create a newly unique structure.

Here I designed some sketch-up models of the Heydar Aliyev that look similar, but with different lengths and places where it uplifts. In the first model I had the same shape design, but with a different texture to enhance the structure. In the second structure I went for a more simplistic design which has a similar shape of the Heydar Aliyev, but the length is much longer, and has more slopes in different places. In the third model and I went for this more harsh shape which hardly slopes, but only at the top. This makes so the building is accessible in all sides, making it easier access for anyone coming in. But it has to link my with my location and specification .

When observing this curve and looking at the Heydar Aliyev, I realized that it has those lines going through them to signify a new curve in that shape which is connected. With that said I made some curve elevated designs and added linear lines to it which it gives the impression of a curved shape whilst remaining that linear format.

Model - 03

Sketch-up - Experimentation

Here are 3 tensile models, in these models you can see how easy it is to create an organic shape which in that looks similar to Zaha Hadid’s work. I created these arbitrary shapes where you can see it has this organic flow to it. I also experimented with different variables of organic shapes, noticing that sharper noses are much difficult and serve no functional purpose, but has the aesthetic design towards it.. In model 01 you can see it has functional space which is usable, while still sustaining the overall aesthetically pleasing design.

Here I done the same process as for my linear model inspiration and experimentation. Here you can see I combined all of the models and made a drawing out of it. By combining I created a newer and more distinct drawing that would help inspire me and add as further development. Here you can see I used more of model 01, reason being because of its flat long surface which could act as an appropriate entry for the structure.

Sketch-up - design process

This is a design process of organic shape. You can see how I developed a simple shape into a more intricate outcome, if the first one I went for a oval shape design and developed it further onwards to get this smooth design which reaches upwards, creating uplift. This helps me easily understand how to manipulate such simple shapes into something similar towards my research inspiration. Here I experimented with some sketch-up models, trying to get a grasp of how it would be made. Seemingly it doesn’t appear to be smooth rather than these sharp squares to create an illusion of organic shape. I think using this method would be the most beneficial, meaning I could accurately place organic into linear. For the final sketch-up model I made you can see I made it so it would have solid surface, this resorted in the whole shape being disoriented and doesn’t seem to look good. So I would have to look at another variable that would be appropriate for this area.

Here is another design process of organic shape. You can see I went for a more of a thin shape and further added depth and weight to it. This could be used as a way of an archway. Anyways, this experiment has helped be understand the flow of organic shape knowing it could be arbitrary and still make something complex. Sketches – investigating

Here I made some random sketches similarly to the research I have conducted in this slide. I will use these shapes as inspiration for an organic shape, as for my main base for my library I am thinking of creating more of an oval base as development, but with research I will see where I can go with this.

09 I

I’ve split the model to create two floors to get an accurate representation of the size, length and width of the structure. This will help me look at how I will implement ideas, such as my linear format onto this curvature design itself and how I’ll be able to establish it and create a unique design overall. This slide will be basically further developing from my organic shape, and seeing how it could work by doing a bit of experimentation.

Basic natural lighting -

One part of my specification is natural lighting – I did some basic research of natural lighting and where it would bounce off and to lighten the interior. I’ll do a further in-dept development/analysis on natural lighting later, but this will help me get a rough idea.

Here I constructed a basic idea for the shape, as you can see I added a little bit of linear to it on the contours. Overall I will develop from this initial point and see where it will lead me.

- After using the prototype models and drawing above, I sketched out a design using all my other research provided before to create this structure. This iteration will help me solve my solution of having linear plus organic mixed together.

Here I made a sketch-up and looked at some more advanced lighting. If I were to have water in my design flowing through, I could possibly use natural lighting to illuminate some type of motion shadow on the walls.

Here I made some refined rectangular stacked model designs, I experimented with various amount of ways to place a block by making them cross eachother, stack on-top of eachother and many other more. Here you can see I learnt that this design is best suited for overall structure strength, and not aesthetically there, but using that initial research I made various of linear designs using other shapes which helped with he variety and uniqueness with the form, thus enhancing it and making it more likeable.

Linear models further dev Experimenting (Linear)

This shows the experimentation of the stacked designs that I have developed further on, you can see I used it as a way to support each-other by stacking them. This creates a secure and firm seal.

With this experimentation, I will pick out the shapes that would be the most functional, and aesthetically pleasing.

Linear -

I made some new card organic models showcasing the different ways I could make an organic shape. In model 01 you can see that’s the most basic form of organic used in many architectural structures. In other models e.g. model 02 and 04 have this unique animalistic type of organic shape which I believe can have a great impact on a building just buy analysing an animal. I’ve also come to realise that organic doesn’t necessarily have to curvatures, it could be rather sharp, but one thing that does define an organic shape is its overall intricate shape and flow it follows.

Here I designed some linear drawings using the research available to me. Here you can see I experimented with every type of linear format and used them to create individual drawings of it. Organic -

Here I made drawings of the shapes above. These are the shapes that I want to later use for inspiration for organic, and other forms of elements later on. I designed some Organic architectural structures which are relevant to my information and research that I have conducted and experimented with. Next step is now combining both of these models, linear and organic and making a few shapes/drawings of them.

ZAHA HADID I CHANGSHA MEIXIHU

11 I

New ideas, secondary res CH, Changsha Meixihu

I’m going to be researching about more organic shapes and in particular looking at this structure from Zaha Hadid. I want to add more onto my already existing research to further develop my sketches/drawings now, I think looking at this shape has inspired me to some further research on organic to enhance it, thus producing a better outcome.

I made some new and unique designs looking at the shape itself. As you can see I let loose of the more wavy design and went more simple. I went with more circular designs with some other design elements that were used prior to this design research. I think I’ll use this elements as inspiration, and probably make a few designs out of these are similar.

Preliminary - sketches

Sketch-ups -

With the research conducted, I made some preliminary sketches of this particular design, mostly arbitrary but I tried to include some type of combination of both themes, organic and linear. I’ll need to do some more research on this and some other linear researches to get more ideas.

Here is a model I made basically using the ideas and detail used previously to make this. This is rather an experiment, but I would like to include this type of aspect possibly later in my design, some type of circular piece to it.

The exterior has a smooth shape which folds ontwo and overlaps together to make this shape. This shape is all over the place, but this organic style has 3 sections which are all unique in design. This includes a car mirror like shape, a butterfly and a tulip. These designs are what makes this outstanding contrast between, and in a way I could do the same process, as in for my pavilion which will be held in the same area as my library. Another aspect of this design I really like is the public designing on the ground, this could be implemented in my workplace to create this environment, which will appeal to majority of the people visiting my library.

12 I

PARK ARCHITECTS I THE GREAT TAPESTRY I’m going to be researching about some more linear designs, here I’m looking at more shapes such as triangles for this instance. I thought that using the overall rectangular shape got a bit dull, so this would further enhance my final outcome and my development process.

More refined - Sketches Experimenting -

Here I made a plan drawing of the top initial part of the drawing, here I can see how its built and managed underneath, this could help be design interior of the site with complex shapes interfering in some parts of the building. Secondly seeing the usage of the shapes, and where they’re implemented.

Elevation drawings of the site I drew. After a bit of analysis, I can see that the overall roof of the design is very sharp, also with its contours, but the sharpness on the walls seems to be quite irrelevant here. Also the overall interior is properly structured to be suited for this type of design.

Design process -

Refined Ideas -

Here I designed some shapes/structures that are similar to the research that I’ve done. Here you can see I almost utilised everything from the research. This sharp design is quite apparent in all these designs. I made it so the sharpness goes in different kind of places so it creates a bit of diversity. As you can see on the final design, I made this mountainous type of design that climbs up. Here I also added sharp wall edges shown by the lines that go down, overall the design is quite random, but by adding the element of the lines gives it that more of an design boost, and creates a more distinct design overall.

I experimented with some linear shapes, and a design process of me adding things onto the design to see where I can go from the research I conducted on the left. As you can see, I started slowly incorporating other linear elements such as triangles, I also used my design concept which being some sort of stacked idea onto this design on top to create more room. This is still just experimenting, but a way to inspire and to help me further develop refine my design.

Shapes - sketches

Here I constructed some organic shapes, these organic shapes that I would use for research and inspiration later on are based on my research prior to this. Here you can see the Changsha building has inspired me a-lot when drawing these designs. With these designs I’ll be making some sketch-ups and a design constructed out of this research as experimentation looking at the overall design. Foam models -

Here I made some organic foam models using the research provided above. I will use these models as inspiration by taking elements of the design and using it and applying it in different designs. Sketch-ups - parts

Here after making my sketch-up I applied all the sketch-ups into one final form of a shape. You can see I create this bizarre weird shape as an overall, and then made a few sketches of elements that I picked out of the shape that I ideally liked in particular. After doing this process, I will make some initial model of this design and use it later on as inspiration. Further more, I would like to do more research on this aspect to form a final shape in mind when constructing my final shape form.

Plan -

Here is my first model, here you can see I adapted the linear concept from my research to create this ambiguous design parts that can be changed to create new ideas. In my first model I went for a basic low to high.

Model - 02

In my second model I changed the side of the model, showcasing how malleable the shape is from one to the other side. This experimentation will help be consider a good design idea from here.

Model - 03

In my third model I positioned them differently to create a more wider front entrance to the building, this includes two sections that and a window like place on the top right corner. This design overlaps with each-other can gives of an illusion of a stacked elemental design which I already researched and experimented on. Model - 04

In my fourth and final model design I went ahead and changed it up by created the middle part the longest part, and having the front to be much shorter. This constructed a new and unique design far different from the other designs that I have constructed.

I used my other sources of research to make these models that have elements of both of my secondary research. With that research, I fused both models to make these final models that I would use later on. These models in particular are very sharp and are about 2 – 3 stories tall, which would be perfect for my library specification, and finally, this also gives off an appearance of an organic structure. I believe I will use the last 3 models in particular for inspiration for my final overall design, In any other case, I’ll do more research and conduct more ideas to refine the overall appearance. As I’ve stated, I want this to be very unique and different from other structures. This structure seems quite difficult to fully incorporate all the curvature designs here, so I think I need a bit more research onto this and organic.

16 I

BANANA I I looked at my linear models and saw that the overall layers are quite thin, and I thought I could possibly fit something circular inside around there or make a layered part which utilizes some circular shape towards it. I think this idea will impact the building heavily, and hopefully influence me to look at other structures/designs similar towards it.

I used a banana as a way of creating a shape out of it using my linear theme/style to it.

These shapes could be used for the exteriors entrance (I’ll possibly use this for my development process), or I could add these shapes for decoration for the exterior. Design development -

Overall I think I will go for more of a cylindrical shape instead because it’s more of an organic shape, plus could inherit some linear to it. Sketch-up - progress

Final idea - ?

I combined both of these developments to create this exterior shape form. I’m going to add some of the elements used in this Primary research to finalise my final shape for my exterior.

Primary Research Banana,

17 I

In this model I used the folding method to create this organic and almost linear shape, it has a similar shape, it has a similar shape to my banana primary research of wings. Paper Models -

Further development; I made some new designs for an idea of how I want my final exterior development to be. I started playing with paper and made these models which are quite different, Model 1: has this sharp top and then a bend which wraps around the top and comes down like a slide on the bottom. I also added another curved piece which comes out of the slide and wraps itself, also a sharp fin on the bottom for support. Model 2 has a sharp top and appears to look like a mountain, I added fins on the bottom and tried to go for more of a linear theme rather than organic on this one. It has very sharp turns and corners, which connect with each-other. I will take inspiration from these model ideas, and then create a final drawing of the exterior.

This is the overall shape that I created, and I will use this technique to make the illusion (appearance) that it is curved, while still retaining that somewhat geometric style to it.

This research is very valuable for my final outcome, and I will most definitely use this. Sketch-up -

Using the models the organic models I made, I further developed from that point and combined those individual designs and outlined them to make these models that I will use for inspiration and detailing later on with the development process. Model 05 is where I combined all the individual models together to create this final form that I would be using as a plan to create an overall shape. As seen, the shape is quite organic and linear to it, and I believe I can develop this into a unique form that would be specific to my brief. Plan -

Here is the plan I made using the final model (05) above. I used Layout to construct it and then later photoshopping to it get the right colour and sharpness, also to remove the outlines. Here is where I’ll start for my basic development, this will help me have a basic design in mind when designing overall.

- I made a 3-D sketch of the plan structure. The shape seems rather big,

- I simplified the shape and made it much smaller, also removing some elements,

- I added an organic smooth slide on the top of the roof, I’ll also use the folding technique to create the illusion of a smooth surface,

- I extended the slide until the end of the roof, and then removed the overhang for additional space.

- I refined the design a bit and added a circular entrance, and a curved overhang, Left side -

- I’ve made the back extend forward, and added a ‘s’ like shape wall,

Design solution 01 – Design Analysis Remove this back part, and only have the front extend and have depth?...

Perhaps continue this on, and create some sort of wavey design?

19 I I feel like moving this part a bit back, and extending it forward so I can more room. Just observing it from here it seems there wouldn’t quite be enough room.

Make the curve more subtle so it doesn’t look like a slide.

Continue onwards,

Wavey sort of design? I’ll go more in-depth with this later on when exploring this.

Have the extend over as well?

Here I did a bit of experimenting and development, I decided to go with this wavy type of design continuing onwards. With that I made sure to have one part protruding outwards instead of two. That being because I think it would look better that way. I finally looked at different frequencies of wave pattern and decided to go with more a of a subtle one. Design Elevation Sketches -

Completely re-do the front, and have this and have big windows?

Developed Design Ideas – implications

Sketch-ups -

Here I created some design ideas using that analysis that I want to implement onto my existing structure for development. I made these designs that are in relation to my existing research, this ideas will help further conclude and help refine the overall design out. With that design analysis, I now understand what it is I have to improve – what I can change, what I cannot, can this work, I don’t think this will? This way I will have a deeper understanding of the structure that I’m currently creating.

DESIGN SOLUTION I 01 This very rectangular design, mainly appearing to be linear is my first design idea; using the research provided, mainly it being some stacked elements, and some other rectangular pieces I managed to create this design which is quite a good start. This design is mostly linear, but the front parts consist of some organic curves which I’ve look from my Zaha Hadid research and Changsha. This design is ideal, but I think there could be some changes on its scale as it seems rather small, so I would have to take that into consideration when making my next design hopefully or the one after. Looking further on this model there isn’t anything else to say as it is rather simple, but I think from here, and my other research and knowledge gained I can easily understand and manipulate new forms more easily because of that. In conclusion I think this design is great for a first linear, organic concept, but there can be a lot of refinement and development to this to significantly improve it.

Design Idea, 01

UNKNOWN I SOUTHERN NEW HAMPSHIRE UNIVERSITY I looked a this particular structure and saw how it relates to my overall research, I think with this I could use this to create a much more refined linear structure and said with it use it’s elements such as its massive arbitrarily placed window designed. This research will refine most of my models to superbly further develop.

Design breakdown -

Here I’m showcasing and breaking down elements of the structure that I like in particular, and I’ll use these designs to for my later projects and other models that I’m going to research on. Side -

After doing my research on this site, I made a few sketch-up models that would resemble its appearance, and from there after have constructed more ideas for my final site. I will use these ideas and implement it later for a detailing or finalization.

After conducting doing a design breakdown of this process, I decided to make some designs out of these, here you can see it has a similar shape and form to basic idea of the design itself. I will try and inherit these designs in my structure, because these are the main parts that I was already looking at, but doing this further research an has made it more stronger.

KILLER WHALE I I saw that my linear research is taking a direction towards some sort of geometry? I decided what if I could have something that is organic yet linear; by adding geometric onto an organic plan, for this instance I decided to look a whale that being it has the largest surface area on elevation and point parts. I want to see where this research would take me to, and where it would be okay to use it onto my design.

Whale - geometry

I looked at a whale for primary research, and thought that I would make sharp linear shapes in a geometric style

Design - 01

Design - 02

Perhaps also looking at some geometric nets? This is quite a basic version, but what if I could use this as a way to construct my structure? This isn’t a very plausible idea, rather I could take the geometric elements provided here and use them.

Design - 03

I then made some basic designs similar to geometric style, I then looked at the different type of shapes I would use and thought about using triangular shapes more rather than the rectangles because triangular shapes are more accurate. Here you can see I made some more complex drawings of geometric shapes. I used some other species of whale which has been outlined and then fixated the triangular shapes down to make these complex models. Each one of these shapes have different styles and variations of a triangular shape, and I believe I will use this research to create a more complex final form. Also, looking back from paper models, I can see this fitting very well. Here I made some more random shapes using linear style to see what I can use to manipulate for my final idea and ideas upcoming.

Here I constructed some of those elements, those nets to create these shapes, unfold and foldable?

After constructing those shapes, I then made some random shapes and did the same technique of geometric shapes and created these two structures that I would use as inspiration later on for my further development of my exterior.

23 I Brainstorming -

In this slide I’m going to be brainstorming some ideas using all my prior research to configure out a draft structure. I’ll be then using some of these brainstormed refined ideas and using some elements to help further develop to envelop it into my final design. This slide will be great for understanding different and new varieties of designs in relation to my research. I won’t be utilising the geometric research here as I think it wouldn’t really be appropriate for the envision I have for my final design, rather I will use elements of the research and utilise it elsewhere in my designing; such as the interior, pavilion, social space etc. Brainstorming -

I proceeded to brainstorm some more ideas, this time using a more linear basis rather than combining both, I want to use both of these brainstorming and make a design out of it. I mainly made some variated designs with some facades and other concepts I looked, such as unusual ways to hold the structure up as such. Final -

After making some drawings and analysing them, I made 4 extra finished designs based on the information above and from prior research, This will set an great example as I looked at stacked designs primarily and see how it influences my overall final design. This will be a great way to use this final designs as foundations for later on.

With this designs, I will further develop to suit both themes, and then finally combine and finalise. I fused both elements of design, organic and linear and created new sketch-up models which are far complicated. This development showcases how I can combine research together.

Model - 07

I created more refined and ergonomic shapes which has a more of an organic style, bit still gives the impression of a linear shape. This combination works so well, its quite hard to tell what style it is.

Here I went back to my card models and decided to further develop this section. By further developing, meaning adding more individual designs that are relevant in that form itself. With these designs here, I will use vital information that will support my research on sharp, linear structures, and with that will evidently resort to my final mode (idea) for exterior. I also want to add on that I will be using some aspects of this design, as I also want it to have other elements which my specification specifically states.

HOANG GK I AT HOUSE

Secondary Research VT, AT HOUSE

This structure has a lot of living space with a lot of light, wind, and trees, and to connect with nature maximum. This building also has a lot of greenery inside of it, and has a very triangular form to it, which all of this makes it into a organic form. The main front design is very unique and is very similar to my models that I made, and I want to use this research to further pursue those models.

Plan Ideas -

Here I looking at different aspects of the design and seeing what I could possibly take as inspiration and further expand my knowledge on this. I decided to make some developments of the site by adding my own unique style and other adaptations that are necessary, I also created some arbitrary shapes and designs that I believe will be useful. Here I looking at different aspects of the design and seeing what I could possibly take as inspiration and further expand my knowledge on this. I decided to make some developments of the site by adding my own unique style and other adaptations that are necessary, I also created some arbitrary shapes and designs that I believe will be useful.

With that research I made some plan ideas as a basic foundation to put out my ideas. I made a few ideas that I would possibly choose. A few things to consider when choosing; surface area, designing, layout (child's library, café etc) , and accessibility on these to pick out one that is best suited for the design that I’m going for.

26 I

Refined drawings -

I experimented with some sketch-ups and utilised it to incorporate my stacked design that I’m currently aiming for. Those two pieces could also be connected perhaps the other way. There could be a possibility to research about some connecting parts.

I made some refined models using my prior research and slide, these designs are more to be used for my final design, and using such elements and other features. I wouldn’t say its development rather more refined design ideas to be used later on. I would probably make a design process/progress again utilising these shapes here. Design - process

Here is me exploring more into the fundamentals of the design to get a particular grasp of the shape entirely to focus on one particular design, The one on the left of this text box is a one of my final concept to take into consideration when finalising my exterior. With the development process on top including sketch-up models I use those attributes and considered it into my design process, plus prior research and drawings. I’ll be most likely using this concept to further develop and enhance and fully sustain my ideas.

Final Idea? -

I decided to make a design process utilising the shapes provided. I showcased each individual piece of elements I used above and created this particular design. This experimentation with this shape in particular has a great affect on my overall knowledge of how I’m going to develop my exterior.

Sustained Ideas Further development,

27 I

Developed Ideas Further development,

This is the concept that I’m going to be following up from. I feel as if this design could be altered to fit my specification, main thing being it has the main aspect that I’ve been looking at which is stacked, also including the linear format, But finally, I’ll be looking more into this shape as an exterior, analysing, developing, and seeing where it could possibly go until I have the desired design. Wind and lighting -

Here I looked into a more critical aspect of the design, showcasing a basic idea of me understanding the wind, sunlight and other aspects which are important. and figured out different variations of this particular concept design shown up there. I then used these drawings to forward this and improved it, I made an overhang as an concept design.

This is a arbitrary concept I’ve concluded through vigorous investigation, and experimentation of design. I looked into the most crucial aspects of this design, mainly anticipating where the sunlight reacts with the building, same thing with the wind to see how it circulates. This understanding would benefit me to make a more fitting design, and understanding the technical parts of design.

Paper Models -

I’ve made some paper models that are in relation to the drawings above. I made some arbitrary designs featuring the linear triangular formation, I also included some organic curved shapes to it to differentiate it and make it more unique (in relation to my specification). I then grabbed those designs and mixed them together to create new ideas based on this concept, I’ll then apply it with some type of plan or other idea to showcase this type of format, and see if its appropriate.

Further developed ideas -

28 I

I picked these 3 plan designs that I personally liked out of those 6 designs. I want to further uses these designs to get an inspiration for a basic plan, or exterior to finalise.

I’ll be looking into further detail, e.g. lighting, wind, sunlight and other factors.

I then proceeded to make a card design using the similar format of those designs prior. I took a picture and angled it so it would create a shadow. Using this investigation I can then figure out what I could add to improve and further develop it to be based off my specification. I’ll be then doing further research of this until I get a design that looks particularly good and has enough space. Further development Refined sketches -

Here I went back to the rectangular linear stacked design, and then interpreted this concept onto to it, and you see can see the affect it has on it, and how much it changes the overall appearance of the structure. This understanding of theses two concepts is me getting a firm visualisation of the final exterior plan/shape.

Here I made another design but this time I used linear boxes and put them in different places to create this organic structure. I achieved this idea from the previous drawing, and in which it has similar designs and references from the other drawings. I then made this drawing highlighted in grey which shows my constructing this design, and investigating whether this would be appropriate to use later on, or combine with the other designs.

This shape perhaps resembles my research on this rectangular linear shapes. As it backs up my research I could use this to further enhance my exterior. Final idea -

This is the final design idea I went with. I went with square to more rectangular shapes placed in arbitrary places, angles and rotations. I think this design has quite a linear form whilst starting organic. With this design idea I will have more options and ideas to see what’s next.

Further development ideas Analysis,

29 I DESIGN SOLUTION I 02 A rectangular collage, a design with a lot of faces. I went with a more boxy, rectangular design to it, further developing it into this organic design which is very similar to a leaf design that was created during my research. This design is very spacious inside, and can fit everything that is needed, main points being the children library, main library and a cafe which is ideal, although one counter-back could be that the interior could be rather difficult to create, and sectioning out and lay outing inside would be rather troublesome. The site leaves a lot of space outside which can perfect for adding things around it, but I think it would happen to be placed around an elevated place which would make it better realistically as it won’t have any solid foundation. This design can be great for detail, it is very sophisticated and comes in terms of my research on linear and organic, the design can be perhaps altered and changed for better sectioning, but otherwise it’s a great new design. In conclusion, I defiantly see me using some aspects of this design rather than the whole thing to refine or develop because I think realistically it wouldn’t just work properly.

Design Idea 02

I made another variant of the design but this time making sure the whole design is actually glass, with this it creates this very unique shadow which I want to use as research later on. The shadow it casts are these little shards with spikey peaks, and I’ve been researching about triangular pieces on linear. I did a and black and white version to fully see the design enveloped into the shadow, and from there I could use some elements of this design and add it towards my refinement or development. I defiantly see myself using this development, arguably this is quite the most ambiguous design here as I can use it to create many other form just be taking some elements of the design.

Looking at my glass material design for my design solution 02. I saw it casted a very nice shadow, and I believe I could possibly use this in some way for another design idea, or perhaps a plan?

31 I Design solution 02 – Design Analysis

New Ideas, investigating Experimenting,

Inspiration -

Sharp, shards? Triangular spikes that could make a plan? Using this filter I could take some of those shards inbetween and create something with it.

Whilst making the glass version of my design solution 02, I saw that I casted a very nice shadow that I could perhaps use. It appears to look like triangular spikes, and some other type of shards in-between or a shattered glass with its individual pieces sticking out. As I’m researching about linear, I think this is best for further development and knowledge of my designs. I could use this and incorporate later on, firstly I want to do a bit of experimenting and researching of this. New Design Ideas -

I’ve gotten a bit of inspiration from that design, I decided to look at it and make my own design from it. What I really liked was the spikes, and the shadow it casted so I made my own design within that. Here you can see I made this tyle of pavilion spiked design here, also using the shadow that was casted from it.

Here I experimented more with that design, and investigated using other shapes instead of a thinner shape. Thicker Sketches of spikes -

Sketch-up -

Here I made my own designs by using the sharp triangular pieces provided, I created some arbitrary designs and used that to further influence my other design ideas by combining it such so. Furthermore, I made some with a bit of depth make making it into a plan, and adding walls into it. I finally then created some sketch-ups to get a better understanding with what I’m working with, this way I can properly implement and use this later on.

This is looking at the different ways I could gradually increase the layers. Considering would it flatulate or gradually increase rapidly, slowly etc.

Model - 02

I looked at these models to get inspiration to create these designs. I used all the research that I conducted and experimented with different lengths, widths and shapes. With the experiments I did with previous designs will help me furthermore develop this piece into an exterior. Plan - 01

Plan - 02

Plan - 04

I looked at the drawings I made, and then proceeded to make some plan elevations out of them using the same drawings but making a collage, but randomly placing them.

I picked these ones in particular because it seems to be the most appropriate when making a structure, it also is relevant to my geometry research that I’ve conducted. They’re practically the same, only thing is one is closer than the other. I will use this to inspire me to make the plan.

I made some more plans which are similar to the shape highlighted. I wanted the plans to look similar while containing a geometric shape. I’m only experimenting at this point to get an visual idea of my plan, and then later creating it I will use this to inspire me to accurately design and lay-out my building.

Further development Plan Analysis,

33 I Plan -

I want to experiment with something, use these pieces on the roof itself. I realised how important roofs are, so ideally I want to use these elements, perhaps develop them more and use them as pieces on a top roof.

I decided to make it less geometric and instead make it more smooth by adding more lines to connect them. I think this makes the design more unique, it still has the elements of an organic shape just more distinct shapes to possibly use as a plan or to add onto something so as a roof.

I’ll see if this effects the design in any way or sort.

Looking at this roof visualisation, I could perhaps use this but instead believe it would make the structure rather more complicated than it should be, so instead I think I would adapt to a to more of different plan sketches to see.

Since I’ve got a lot of research I could perhaps experiment with one of these designs and develop it. But, I think this shape is a bit boring rather that I could make something more unique – corporates both linear and organic separately or perhaps I could do both instead. I’ll also have to look into the activities, since I’m making a library I would have to adequately add the parts there, and come back to that after that I finish my exterior.

Finally I added a few shapes onto these buildings to visualise and too further improve. I’ll be picking out one of these designs and sticking forward with it.

I made some more plan drawings using those shapes on the left, primarily the bottom right.

Sketch-up - 01

Here I’m making drawings of the combined with the research, basically making different elements to add to this, or to get inspired by something completely different and utilise that instead. I picked sketch-up 01 to be as a structure to forward and develop reason being because how big the space is, and how unique it looks from plan.

Sketches -

More design ideas -

I made some sketch-ups showcasing different processes of this shape, I then also made a few designs using those initial shapes that were conducted throughout my prior research. Overall, this is the shape I created, I tried implementing everything here, but I personally don’t really like the shape, so instead I’m thinking about adding something new towards it.

As I was researching here, I made a particular design or shape that I found quite nice and perhaps I’m thinking about forwarding with that as it seems to include both themes of linear and organic into one.

I grabbed one of the shapes here, broke them up to use as further development, I think the design here is quite rather unique.

I made some more developed design ideas and tried adapting the more organic theme to it, whilst remaining it as organic rather,

I made these shapes over here using the research above. I developed these shapes more into organic type of shapes, from what I realized over there that they have the appearance of an organic shape whilst remaining quite linear which is an advantage. I’m thinking to keep the same plan layout provided of the shape, then utilizing these components over here instead. I should do more developed research on this.

35 I

Since I’ve now created a few specific plans that I’m going to be working with, I want to add something that is quite curvy, I think I could add something that seems rather absurd, so I’m going with this curved like product. I will experiment and add this into my design to see the outcome whether I could forward with it or not.

Here I’m doing a design breakdown, what I’m looking out of this design is the overall shape but with this I’m going to adapt my own ideas onto it instead and make it more into an architectural structure. I looked at different thicknesses and curves and over aspects to it. Another thing is that I tried making it stackable to see if it adds anything to it, but instead I think it would be more appropriate flat, probably as a wave type of design instead.

Initial concept -

After doing that research I made these two individual designs as a starting point. It is quite simple but I think perhaps I could add something to it to initially make it “organic”. I thought about a specific pattern a wave, I’ll be looking at different frequencies of waves and researching about it develop this onwards.

Wave -

Whilst making these designs, I thought of an organic style towards this, I went with a wave instead. I made a little concepts on the left as slim lines. I made different arbitrary patterns of waves and made them into some specific architectural structures. They look quite similar to Zaha Hadid’s pieces as well. I could possibly use the other parts to incorporate into my design or instead use a few parts to make it.

I think made a sketch-up of the second wave and made it geometric at first and then more smoother.

I made a few particular shapes here showcasing how flexible it is and a variety of shapes you can make. I think by having big windows this could let in natural lighting, also that I could stack them up to eachother and create other parts to it to make it better. I then made a design on the right side looking at this particular wave pattern and making a design based of it. The overall shape is good, but I think I could add and make it much.

Secondary Research Linear curve,

Segregated Childs Library Library Cafe

I’m going to be forwarding my development with this design.

I made the overall layout more rectangular that being because I would have the main design on the sides besides having it over an ariel view,

Investigating -

Problem? -

Here I was experimenting with this snake (cobra). It has a very similar motion to shape towards my design and realized that a cobra's head is usually bigger than the rest, so I invested that into this design. Straight away I disliked it so instead I went a cobra style ‘standing’ up style instead.

I developed forwards and made this design which is more of a shape of a cobra, once making it in sketch-up I realized making it parallel doesn’t work properly so it gives the structure quite a morbid shape, and when doing it the longer way makes it look like a straw. I also made some paper models demonstrating and visualising the concept here, and beneath some final designs that I would like to use instead.

Visual of plan -

I started looking at the main base (which being the square) – I haven’t given too much attention to it, but here I’m going forward with a natural lighting circle opening on top and then planning on adding some sort of design towards it,

I then looked at my prior and research that I already conducted on this particular structure. I’m going to use this as inspiration and apply it to my new existing structure.

Experimenting further Exterior development,

37 I Using the developme nt from the prior slide, this is the sides that I’m continuing with.

New ideas for the side part, I made them protrude outwards more with other connecting sides to it. A possibility for further development?

I then experimented and displayed some lighting effect to it, and a sketch-up showcasing two angles of few natural lighting, I want to continue on with this idea, perhaps further develop it.

Here is a few experimentation s for a particular circle. I went for some that were more imbedded inside of the design and others that protruded outwards. I figured out an ideal one (that being protruded outwards).

Final Design? Analysis,

I made a few more designs and wanted to follow up from the square shape (it seemed rather empty), so I added the continuous following design throughout to get this on the square,

Final Design – Solution 3 Design specification – does it include?

-

Includes a café and has a separate children’s library.

-

Is around 2 – 3 floors tall and has high ceilings.

-

Can include parking area for visitors and employees.

-

Modern design.

Basic information -

3D Printed Models -

With that development process done, I’ve made my final model in a 3-D printed form. I made the overall design look like somewhat a crab, I also made sure I have the essential parts that were protruding outwards for other aspects of the place such as the main library, café etc. I included the wave pattern design on the side that flows continuously around the shape and finally a circular shape on top of the main library for natural lighting to enter in.

Design Analysis – What could I improve?

-

I think the overall structure looks quite monotonous and uninteresting.

-

It perhaps appears to be rather more linear rather than having a 50/50 basis of both themes combined.

-

I would say it appears to be rather too large,

-

Could perhaps may the sectioning and layout much better and include much more space for the main library.

-

Have different varieties of heights included.

I looked at my design analysis and saw what I need to perhaps fit. This is just a basic concept that I’m going to work with, and I looked at a circle and perhaps adding those similar rectangles on each individual part? I will do some further analysis of this concept in the next slide.

The reason why I made this ‘unfinished’ design 3D printed is so I can visually see it for myself and analyse it, so I can put better improvements to the overall structure.

Sketch-up -

38 I Detailed Elevations Design 03 – Design Analysis Perhaps make the sides more varied in their ‘waviness’ (overall design for it)

I think I could perhaps change the top circular hole and make that the whole subject?

Make these ends a bit longer, or have them varied in length, this could plus have more space within in the structure?

Making this top part circular meaning, I could have all the end parts all around it?

This means there will be more space within the structure, also meaning I could have more room adequate space for social spaces etc.

I’m not trying to actually change anything here for the design, but since I have a strong feeling that I want to use this design solution I want to already see the parts where I could possibly further develop and improve the overall design for this. I would also try to combine it with the other finished design solutions I have and perhaps, combining it together?... New ideas? -

So I decided to make some more design ideas. I used some of the elements provided with this design, and m other solutions to configure out something. Perhaps I could combine all my design solutions and use that to make my final design, or used the one that benefits my specification, or you could say, plausible. I don’t think solution 02 would do anything rather special here, but I’ll see what I can do.

Design Idea 03 Analysis,

39 I DESIGN SOLUTION I 03 A quite narrow and linear structure, with two rectangular pieces that connect outwards in a form of a crab. The left side is where the café is going to be based whilst the right side is going to be the segregated child's library. The middle hub, that being the square is going to be the main library with a circular hole on the top which casts natural sunlight into the structure. The site leaves a lot of space outside which could have space for a social space, parking, and a pavilion. This space is beneficial for further development, for this instance I added a parking lot to showcase in context. Looking further on this model I hope to gain a better insight of the structure in great detail in across to its main theme aspect and sophisticated form. This knowledge, also including my previous design ideas I now have a more ambitious understanding of this structure and overall theme. Finally, I hope to further develop from this point because I rather like this wavy design, and how it blends in both organic and linear which I was investigating and experimenting throughout my design ideas.

Design Solution 02

40 I

Choosing a Design Analysis,

Here in this slide I’ll be choosing which final design idea I want to use as a final design to further develop, and refine and put it onto my location.

DESIGN SOLUTION I 01

DESIGN SOLUTION I 02

Looking at my first design solution I went with a more simple subtle curve design towards it with big open windows that let natural light in. I also made sure to protrude the design outwards so I can have a little bit of depth in the design. I think it has relatively enough space, but there could be some places to expand and add development in it. Perhaps changing the overall appearance, or creating a new block that could act a main structure? There are so many ways for me to expand just from this slide, why not take elements form this design?

In my second design solution I went with a more arbitrary, complex shape with more of a blocky linear style that can be seen as organic from a plan. I overall like the structure and its shape, and it is very unique, seeing these type of structures are almost nonexistent, but I think for an realistic architectural stand-point and other aspects that being plan and spacing, I don’t think it would work out. Firstly, the design is too small, so I’ll have the expand it meaning the window will be morbidly too large and out of scale. Secondly, just planning and spacing out things would be difficult.

Will I use this design? Perhaps, I think looking at the other final design solutions I could go for them, but I’ll have to do a little bit of analysis and looking into it whether I want to use it as a final design to forward with. Furthermore,

I don’t think I would even try to use this design as seeing it’s obvious flaws, but what I can use is its elements provided, that blocky triangular shape can be used as I already researched about linear type of designs already.

I could just combine all these design ideas together and create one complete design incorporating all the elements provided from these designs, but the problem is I don’t think I could include every one of those. So there could be a final verdict on whether I will do this or not.

In conclusion, this design seems too ambitious and just a bit out of what I’m trying to envision so I would highly unlikely use this, but as I’ve stated in the design solution 01, I could use elements of this structure to apply in my chosen one.

In conclusion it has a very regular sized shape, now I’m looking at it, there isn’t any place to start expanding just form the design so I probably won’t be using this design.

Final Verdict -

DESIGN SOLUTION I 03

I chose design solution 03, as stated I think this perfectly fits my specification and there is more room to develop and refine (from what I envisioned so far with this design). There could be perhaps ways I could incorporate some of those other design solutions, but I think in this instance probably not.

DESIGN SOLUTION I 03

In my third and final design solution I went with this more simple, but rather complex design. I looked at the wavy pattern for my first design solution and decided to develop that and add it into this design. The two part that extend outwards are almost like legs, and the overall shape kind of resembles some type of carb. I really like how I included a main hub in the centre which lets in the most natural lighting, also having tons of room to have big windows on my extended pieces. There are other aspects of the design I really like is that wavy pattern that goes around the whole design, and how it is varied and different from the other sides (I could expand and vary them even more, but I think I did it well to distinguish its difference). I’m most confident in taking this design solution as I feel like it’s fulling in design specification, that being because there is adequate spacing for two floors, and another being that is quite big, and having a café and other things included makes it much better by having it large. In conclusion I think I’ll be using this design, as I’ve stated above it fits my specification, is big, can adequately suit 2 or more floors etc.

41 I

I first started off by looking at some circular shapes, this being a finish roll of tape. I thought of using this instead of having the base to be rather dull (being a square). So, I expanded the already existing circle on top and used that as the whole base. Model progress - ideas

With that I found a perfect shape that fits on top to create the roof. It also has a nicely placed circle in the middle for natural lighting to enter (almost like a greenhouse, or half globe architecture). Sketches -

Sun idea -

I then did some experimenting with some circular shapes and looked at different ways I could possibly apply it.

I realized that some aspects of my shapes were quite similar, so I looked at some other organic things then I stumbled across some sun cartoony drawings. I followed it along and applied the same concept to create this design on the far right. I will further develop this in the next slide and look more into it. Final concept -

New Idea development Analysis,

42 I

I’m going to be talking and developing my design through this particular plan design and seeing where I can go from it. Concepts -

Here I made a few 3-D designs. I investigated the basis of the rectangular pieces and experimented with different height variations with it. As you can you can see on the right, the shape seems to resemble my previous building, but that’s just a draft. I also wanted to include the wavy pattern on my previous design as well. I then also constructed a few more ideas using my previous prior research that I conducted, perhaps I’ll utilize some of these ideas as they’re relative on the top of the structure. Concept - 01

I made a 3-D version showcasing how this will look visually. With this I can accurately visualize and add whatever I want onto the existing structure for further development.

Here I made concept 1, I decided to use the varied set to create this uprising rectangular paths that reach until the height of the structure. I think this is quite unique showcasing a variety of different stories here.

Right now, I think it looks a bit bland, so I’ve already done research on some varied rectangles so I’m going to be forwarding with that ideally. Development -

New Idea -

I looked at my sketches I made and decided to use this to create bridging, making relocating around he structure much easier. I then also made some sketch-ups to visualize it, perhaps I could also utilize the rectangular variety and incorporate it into my design?

I then finally added back the circular top and visualize the sunlight entering the top. I’ll go more in-depth with this later.

Concept - 02

For this one I decided to keep some parts of the rectangles to be slightly shorter, just a bit of design concepts here seeing which one is perfectly suited. Ideally this one looks the most appropriate.

Further development-

I then decided to add the height variety to my structure, and I believe this added a little bit more depth to it. I didn’t go crazy on the scaling having it gradually go up or so, rather have some individual pieces (mainly the ‘X’ part to be slightly less elevated, and the grey showing the elevated parts).

Further Development Analysis and new ideas,

Social Space -

43 I

Before doing any changes to the overall design, I decided to look at the social space that I included in my specification. I believe before finishing my exterior and interior I should rather do my social space as I see a clear idea to where to possibly put my social space. In this slide I’ll be looking at places to put my social space, what to include, and other aspects etc. Concept - 01

Difficult to find entrance,

Use this space for something else?

Concept - 02

Concept - 03

Natural lighting,

My first initial idea was to have the social space inside some of these structures. Some of these have some sort of space to sit down and relax and the others don’t, Empty unoccupied space

Whilst analyzing I realized that I could perhaps use these empty unoccupied spaces for something else. Flaw might be it would be quite difficult to locate the entrance, so to add something into these spaces would be beneficial?

Difficult entrance point,

For this new concept I decided to add some sort of now “outdoor” social space to be in this unoccupied parts. I firstly decided to go and use only a few sections (possibly only one). But then looking at the overall size of the structure I decided to further develop and make all the parts social spaces for easy access. Clear sign of entrance

Add some type of gates to indicate no entry point

Here is another concept I possibly want to go with. Since there is so much space for the rectangles, I think having something in the middle would be a possibly a good idea. So having a social space with natural lighting coming inside from the middle would be great. But this leaves the other parts unoccupied, resulting back to concept 01 and its flaws. Developed concept - 03

Too many social spaces, difficult exit as-well

I made sure there is now a clear sign of an entrance point which was the main problem, also I added some gates to indicate a “closed” social space (this being so it’s rather easy to track population). Another thing perhaps I realized is that there is way too many social spaces here, I think that kind of disorients the place a little, making it rather difficult to get out. Social Space Visualization of sunlight -

I went back to my previous slides of my location analysis and saw that the sunlight, from this point here, I think it would be more appropriate to have the social space being on the east side, and the parking on the west and north rather because it’s a space that doesn’t need that much attention.

I decided to also include my other parts of specification for this, my pavilion (marked as red) and my parking lot… I decided to combine both 02 and 03 and use this. I decreased the overall scale for the social space and rather have it around the back side. And have my pavilion be in the center of my design, I think this way the overall specification will be all in one, and those parts marked as white would-be parking lots plus entrance to my structure. I think I will follow up with this overall concept.

Section Layout Analysis,

44 I

Section Layout Refined,

Final section layout -

Key -

Model analysis -

I did a bit of visualization… For the left image I decided for my social space to have some sort of barrier that blocks for anyone entering (this decision is made because I think it would be rather clustered in these areas so having areas to enter would be better, or since I have 3 social spaces, I could just open it for many other people to enter, but that would just ruin the point of having one main entrance (and other small ones for employees etc.) For the right image I visualized that I want big windows and openings in my structure, this is because I could get all the natural lighting inside. Overall model analysis -

And finally, I looked at the overall design as a whole. Here I visualized the wavy design that I initially had – want to make sure that it’s all very similar pattern rather than having one that goes some other way, one problem I found that it looked a bit off, so it keep it consistent I would add parts with more waviness to it rather than some other ones.

Here I made a more refined sectioned layout (I will go more indepth when I’m including other factors that are interior based). Firstly, I made sure that there will be more space for parking as I realized that the building that I’m working with a structure that is fairly large which needs to accommodate the employees and the people who come by from cars. So, with this they can have their separate parking’s. I also made sure to have 3 blocks that instead rather than having 1 or all of them, I will also have to make wall that blocks anyone from coming in. And finally, I think I want to have my pavilion in the middle rather than having elsewhere because there wouldn’t be any space to place it down besides the circle. Site Layout -

I went back to my site analysis slide and realized how different my site is now going to be since I’m combining all of them together, this means that I will have to change the elevated areas perhaps to give it a bit more depth to it. So, I made a little design development; I added the elevated blocks that surround it, placed my structure on top to get a good visualization on how it would look. This is not fully going in-depth as of the moment, but one I finish my overall design then I will be able to properly display, this is because if I make any changes that alter the whole design.

Seating

In this slide I’ll be talking about social spaces; different type of social spaces, what to include in social spaces, and showcasing other good social space examples. Firstly, what are social spaces? A social space is physical or virtual space such as a social center, online social media, or other gathering place where people gather and interact. Some social spaces such as town squares or parks are public places; others such as pubs, websites, or shopping malls are privately owned and regulated.

Social space - 01

Social space - 02

Social space - 03

This social space is rather open and has none to very little parts into it, rather it doesn’t receive a lot of attention but its primarily there for seating.

This social space is rather compact which means there will be people occupying and using the space, which means this will create a lot more interaction between them, could have rather less detail as I don’t see anything relatively exciting rather than seats.

In this social space you can see it has more creativity put into it, rather showcasing designs, it also isn’t too far spread or compact, so this is the best of two social spaces.

This is an obvious no as my social space is defiantly and will be going to be populated as its located in a populous part of Hyde Park.

Social space seating rough ideas -

I could perhaps use the fact that it is compact and use that to my advantage.

What to include in Social Spaces -

The most effective kinds of social space typically combine a café or refreshment area with breakout style furniture such as soft seating and bench tables to encourage interaction. Incorporate a variety of different furniture styles to cater for various preferences, requirements and postures. I think for my social spaces I would rather do something that is imbedded with the ground itself, rather than having many different type of chairs and seating which would be hard to regulate. Now I have this valuable understanding of social spaces, what to include etc. I know have some sort of foundation and start. Next slide I’ll start out by looking at social space's examples.

I could use this as a way to figure out more unique social space designs which is interesting. Rather I would want more designs that are with the ground.

Section Layout Refined,

46 I

PUBLIC SPACE DESIGNS I For my now outdoor public space design I want to add some type of designs to it. I’ll be looking at something that is somewhat similar to my original themes of linear and organic. I’ll possibly do a one or two pieces of research on this as I don’t think there isn’t anything more to add towards this rather have some refined ideas to put out in there. With these refined ideas I’ll try to look more into the sites inbetween to give some variety possibly if needed.

Preliminary Sketches -

Refined Sketches -

I made a few designs being inspired by some of these public space design. I looked at every single concept and made a few that I would want to put in my now ‘outdoor’ social space. I want to go more in-depth with outdoor public spacing design for something rather different with a bit more research, but I think doing one or two research design is enough for a outdoor social space design here that is going in-between.

I then made some more refined outdoor social space ideas. I think I’m going to have something different in every single set, or have them repeated onwards with some other designs that go through it perhaps. Or… I could have them separate with different types of things within them for more entertainment? A possibility really. Sketch-ups -

Ideas -

I went back to take some of my older designs that I didn’t fully utilize. I’ll use some elements to refine and enhance my overall outside models. Also, to mention, this slide isn’t necessarily going to be heavily developed rather to understand social spaces and get some basic ideas.

Secondary Research Public space, foundation

47 I

In this slide I'll be gathering some ideas using some models to further influence and gain newer ideas to combine. This is supposing a development process to further enhance and improve my understanding and ideas for social spaces.

Linear designs -

Public space - models

Developed, Organic designs -

Here I made some arbitrary social space design using the previous research provided. I developed these and added some that were linear and others that more organic (having curves etc.) This is a great foundation to start from and further develop and create new existing ideas. Inspiration Developed organic designs -

Here I made some arbitrary social space design using the previous research provided. I developed these and added some that were linear and others that more organic (having curves etc.) This is a great foundation to start from and further develop and create new existing ideas.

I used some of the wire models I made and drew some line drawings of it, this will be a great way to understand what I’m working with and what I can add into.

Investigating Public space,

48 I Chosen Idea -

Investigating Public space,

Models -

Make linear?

Has this extended piece which comes out,

Has a harsher opening, but more of an oval shape,

I made some more models with laser cutter, here I made sure to add some squares in-between to have some sort of seating or vegetation to liven the area. Forming New Ideas -

Forming Ideas -

With that research, I looked at some shapes that are similar, and also developed a bit forward looking at other details in it, doing a bit of experimenting by seeing what I can make with these oval designs.

I looked at the circular shapes and decided to go for more inconsistent type of circles or more of an oval type of circle? I experimented this, and applied it in some designs. I also looked at some of the harsh designs, and saw what I could add, also looking at some other parts such as the pathway for pedestrian walkways as-well which would have to lifted a bit to tell. Rendered plan design -

I then made another plan design here, but looking more into the contours of some linear shapes that I could add, which I've done on the bottom left for my first rendered plan design. Rendered plan design – 01

Rendered plan site design, first iteration of it using the research provided so far,

More circular designs, and a pathway which goes right through it.

I added a bit more with this near the edges to add a bit more depth,

Circular, oval designs here, and how it circles around to finish it.

I added some texture to it, and as you can see I have a lot more circles in it. I decided to go with some oval or inconsistent shaped circular designs as it would be seem rather off, but this is so far what I have for this research on circular designs.

THAMES BARRIER BRIDGE I

Plan Analysis -

The park has these parallel lines which go across, and some other lines going straight or diagonally, I think I want to use the similarities of the pathway and incorporate it into my design if possible, I'll have to do adequate research on this, Experimenting-

Creating Designs -

Here I looked at some hedge designs, with the designs I made a two slides before, I looked at some shapes which I then incorporated over here, giving resemblance to all of them. With those designs I want to further develop and create a hedge design that I want to create. I want to probably go for something that is more on the minimalism side rather than some complex…

49 I

Thames Barrier Bridge Secondary Research,

Developed Design -

I then created a developed design, I went with a more geometric surface, or I could go for something more simpler such as a rectangular? Or a sloped rectangle? I’ll have to look into it, but I think this design is most possible. Sketch-up Development-

I looked at some other parts of Thames Barrier Bridge/Park and saw some of the main aspects those being the slope and many other things that make the design, From that point I took those designs and looked at different variations and styles that would adequately fit my design theme, that being minimalism for this part (hedge).

I then finally looked at some more hedge designs located in the area and used that as research that I will use to develop my hedge design.

Here I made a small development, that is by changing a bit of design, instead of having a parallel geometric hill, I instead created a more complex one with different pieces around it.

50 I

Investigating, Experimenting,

More sharper linear designs here, I think this one can be a bit adjusted…

I like the slope of the design here, I think it contrast very nice with the linear,

Here I looked at some designs I made previously, I got inspired by these shapes at their simplicity. With that I went onwards and developed that shape by making them much thinner, with that I decided to cross hatch aswell to get a better parallel design.

Looking more into the cross hatch design, I forgot to mention that I also went in looking at more wavy type of cross-hatch designs by looking at Thames barrier park. With that I want to incorporate those design elements and make another rendering. Wood planks-

I’ll have to go a bit more into this, Formulating Ideas -

I saw some wood planks which looked awfully similar to what I’m doing. They’re screwed in together meaning they’re all parallel so any direction I move it, it’ll stay the same giving me a visual interpretation of how it would look like.

Experimenting-

Made a two developed designs, one being linear, and the other one more wavy, Final Renderings - 02

Once I made the cross hatches, I decided to add some circular shapes in between to change it up, I looked at some cylindrical shapes that would be appropriate in this space to adequately add? I’ll have to look a bit more into the next slide about probably seating and other notices.

Here I looked at the cross-hatch design, although it does look visually appealing it can be quite boring, and the most complex and difficult one being the wavy design with elevated steps as you go on the way, with a circular part on the bottom left,

51 I

Investigating, Experimenting,

Ideas gathering “S” shaped curve,

Elevated sections with small stairs? Gives more depth, Skate park, looking into it..

Skates park rough plan can be used as a pathway?

Inspiration -

Here I researched and looked at those slopes, which is similar to the curve part I was looking at on the top left. With that I made a few designs and made a line through it and by adding some circles parallel to it. I realised the design was very similar to a ying-yang so I used that as inspiration and further developed my work. From there I looked at different curve variations and other things, I then made a final design which is very similar to the ying-yang but I think is great seating as it has additional space,

Here I looked at the curve part and made a few designs from it, I really liked the curve part so I made my own variations of those. I want to proceed with this design as I think I need to add some sort of curvature into my design,

I could also opt for something more similar, such as a linear rectangle which fits more into my design perhaps? I looked more into the pathways and layout of the design, I then made three final social spaces for each space I specified of the design that I want to follow with in my final design,

Here I looked at the skatepark and looked at its quite unusual shapes which inspired me to make my own, perhaps some sort of ground rather than a skate park, I made a variations of those designs and made one final one highlighted in dark grey which I want to proceed with as I think this design is quite unique,

I then made a render plan of the model, also including the “S” pattern benches, but I think I would possibly change it… for now its there. I also decided to not at the bushes here, but in the final slide for this and the exterior, I will.

52 I

Final Design

FINAL DESIGN I SOCIAL SPACES After completing my research on social spaces, I looked at my specification for the social space and I saw a few things I possibly went over; keep it minimal, not too distracting with a lot of things going around, and finally too many seating areas. From the research I initially had I changed it so that the design wouldn’t become rather complicated and instead put this minimal design with hardly any depth, but with this it gives a nice clean polished look towards it. I also didn’t add a lot of activities here as I planned, I think that would just make it too distracting, and also having too many people near the entrance wouldn’t also be ideal (just leaving and entering would be rather crowded and difficult). And finally, seating areas, I didn’t add seating areas here as the main purpose of looking here was the layout of these plans; I looked at many different type of plans, all each being individually different from each-other, consisting of parallel linear, curves, circles etc. Seating would ideally be put in the next few slides showcasing it in context. In conclusion this design came out how Ideally wanted it preferably, and there wouldn’t be anything else I change but expect add onto my seating designs which vary (shown down there for context).

Have each individual design for each of these extender parts?

53 I Design Analysis – Next Step

Experimenting, Exterior

Maybe have a shield on top (would be hard to display and make on sketch-up.

Experimenting further -

Have maybe hallways and windows in these supports?

Now that I’m done with social space, I looked back and saw there isn’t anything else that I want to really adapt and improve, I think the main difference would obviously be the circular middle, and how much bigger its gone. With this design analysis I’ll be covering some of those, and seeing whether I could add something to refine or develop. Experimenting -

Here I looked more into it, looking at other design variations and possibly seeing what other type of curved design that I’m going for. It’s obviously going to be placed on those rectangles that lead out to different areas in the structure, but I’ll have to see where else I could suppose add it?

Inspiration -

Here I solely looked at the design frame, now that I’m done and I don’t really want to change anything else in the overall structure, I’m deciding on looking at this blocks here, adding some type of design which will be similar to my design idea 03.

With that design, I looked at the plan and thought about having some sort of curve that goes past? Around it which straps the design? This will give more added depth to the building.

Right now I’m developing and experimenting with different variations of those designs and seeing else I could possibly add.

First design using those development and research,

Experimenting – Final Ideas

Different variables of those designs,

Experimenting, Exterior

Different techniques?

Here I experimented with different techniques and design ideas seeing which one would be the best for me, here I looked at some subtle curve shapes and many others that I would possibly add onto my design variables. I proceeded to make four variables of designs I did in design idea 03, but I made a new variables of those. I think I really like the design that is going through it, and it to be wrapped the whole circle will add more depth into the design,

* File got lost, had to redo on short schedule

Here is the sketch-up showcasing those designs visually connected to the building, I think it looks great, and also having those huge windows and other windows around those hallways make it even better, and the social space just adds more into it.

Sketch-up – Final Ideas

I picked out the designs for there I wanted to use and made some sketch-ups of it to better visualise how they will look like, forwarding from that I also combined some of those ideas and made a few new designs here, I think what looks great here is that they’re all unique and very different from eachother to tell where you are, another thing to notice is that this gives room for more natural lighting which is great and is what I’m looking for in these designs, Finally, I added some glass to visualise how the windows would look like, the design is also very tall having room for more than 2 -3 stories, which is essentially great for the design I’m working on, a massive library with a separate section for kids,

The social space is rather simple, but it does what it needs to fit my adequate specification for this. Minimalism, little, and more pathway designs towards it. I feel like if I added more into this area it would be a bit too crowded and just hide the design. Elevations -

Looking further it also has 2 – floors on the rectangle parts which is great for having different designated sections for different things. This design took a lot research, firstly starting with the initial stacked idea which I was interested in pursuing, later adapting it and making it more comfortable. I researched more and concluded having this design through my final design idea, where I envisioned it to be. The design resembles the sun which was the main inspiration, and I thought it would be great to make it appear that way if it receives a ton of natural lighting from the sun. Design breakdown -

Primary Research Banana,

Sketch-up -

I made some sketch-ups to visualise how it would look like the simple curve, and by also adding it onto something that is linear, A quick plan drawin g of some ideas I have of some desks …

I looked at mainly the tables and other parts of their design, I really liked the overall interior and how it stayed true to its theme outside. I also looked at the cupboards at the back, and some seating design. I’m going to be picking out elements of the design, and seeing what I can use to build my interior café, Further Development -

Interior -

There isn’t a lot to look at interior, but from my design I have a lot of space that needs to be filled, but I’m thinking to not have way to many unnecessary places, some spaces that aren’t used could be used for something else, perhaps some teaching classes or some sort of educational things. Another thing to notice that I'm not going to be making all those other parts that can be up to the imagination to imagine, so instead I’ll be making the main things that I want in my library, a café, main library, child’s library.

I looked more into the designs and tried to add some subtle curves into the design to see what I’ll make from it. I also forwarded and looked at some other blocks as-well, and some cupboards designs, which I think about storing food inside, I’ll look more into this in the next slide,

8 sections, only going to be using about 4,

Café -

As stated in my specification, the reason to build this because there isn’t a lot of libraries that have for kids, so making the overall structure bigger can opt for other type of classes or necessary educational things for those to learn. Childs Library -

Counter design?

Here I made a few quick sketches to look at some ideas using my prior research, with that I would take some ideas into consideration and develop it until I’ve got an design that I want to apply into my café interior. Ceiling lights -

I made an interior sketch of my design, since my design has two floors, or I can have even more, I can opt to having something that is more logical by having two separate cafes, one of each popular sides, those being the entrances. I have a lot of rectangular sections, so with that there could possibly be anything really, any shop or something in relation to books, libraries can be there which will be this space more immersive whilst staying remaining to be a library.

Sketch-up -

I looked at some lighting designs, looking at the sketch-ups I thought about going for something more cylindrical , and then developing it by combining the ideas, from there I picked out one idea for the lighting and I suppose I want to go with something that is in shape of a half-circle. Circular design?

Tables -

Have something that is more rectangular?

I made a few sketch-ups and also adding the shadows showcasing how the design will look like before getting rendered, I played around with a few conventional table designs from which I sought to go with a circular design, resembling the shape of my exterior and the half circle of the ceiling lights.

I wasn’t planning on making a rectangular design inside the interior, so instead I will plan the layout in sketch-up and use that since that would make it more accurate. I also looked at some tables, and some other type of walls that would have that subtle curve, and some other designs that I want to add, especially some bookshelf designs.

More ideas for lamp designs, Looking at other lamp ideas,

Some preliminary sketch-ups -

Here I made some ideas sketches, looking at different ideas particular being the book shelf, for a kids library I’m insisting on having some sort of small tables for them to learn and read, and some other fun things such as the big bean bags from them to sit on, and privacy, That being because this library for children would be massive, so having some sort of gating off can keep it more safe. Sketches -

Look at some layers of book-shelfs and other parts that I want to include.

Sketch-up -

Here I looked at some table designs and some layout for, having this type of classroom style makes it much more easier for anyone organising it much easier. CIRCULAR ROOFS I

Primary Research Circular Roofs

Design breakdown -

Here I mainly looked at some circular designs, incorporating the cross-hatching design that goes through it which is quite unique, That cross-hatch on the design makes sure it doesn’t break, and supports it no matter how bizarre the shape really is, I did a bit more development, and I looked at some black-hole and saw how the singularity has this shape that goes inside, so I thought about doing something like this, experimenting and seeing how it would look like, I’ll use this design, the opposite way, and make it all out of glass also including the supporting cross-hatch on top.

I looked on google for sketches of these, and I found these sketches showcasing how those type of designs even work, and looking from this it goes down and there is this little hole in the middle, and with another layer on top which keeps the tension. Looking from this there has to be two separate layers for the roof, and then it will create this thick glass illusion So perhaps looking at this will be great,

Here I looked at the circular design and though about having many layers, with these layers there will be spots for book-shelfs and different’ ordering centres, lets say different genres or reading levels for each individual layer of surface.

63 I Inspiration -

Sketching Ideas The black hole idea, having two layers inside, Looking at a engineers perspective it won’t really work, and to add some sort of design, I would have this crosshatch going around which will help hold it (hopefully) and add this nice looking design, and when the shadow would be much significant.

Development,

I looked at some other aspects and thought about having some sort of protruding outwards opening, with some sort of design on it.

This design inspired me for the interior, its also a library, and I like the design of libraries as-well how it faces it, and here I made a sketch-up showcasing it.

Looked at the plan, having possibly smaller circles?

From these ideas I want to develop and incorporate them here, these ideas seem a big sophisticated, but I think it can work out, with that I will look into some other things such as lighting here. Developed ideas -

I made some more developed ideas looking at the layers of the design, and the other part being the sides of it and some perspective, I also drew some circles to show it go smaller in the bottom, or bigger, or just leave it how it is.

I made a sketch-up with the design, I think making it smaller wouldn't help it at all, rather just destroy some space for absolutely no reason, so having the same is better.

Pavilion -

65 I

BRIEF I SPECIFIATION When constructing the exterior of my library I wanted to add something that would enlighten, and have something more eventful in my exterior. I looked at pavilions which is absolutely perfect for sitting down; communicating, relaxing, studying – pavilions are structures that are made in a particular way to comfort a person. I want to make a pavilion that would be ideal for family to come around and relax with a pavilion what would ensure shade, have a beautiful casted shadow, and being entirely open and versatile. When looking for the themes of this, I want to challenge myself again, and make another linear and organic set of designs. With that I’ll be having to look at those research in those themes and seeing whether my understanding of doing this theme before has improved.

-

Main theme of Organic andLinear,

-

Have it be open,

-

Make sure it casts a nice shadow,

-

Have seating.

-

Have some sort of greenery implemented into the design,

Not be overly complicated, but still has that sophisticated design element

Brief and Specification

66 I

Secondary Research ??, Serpentine Pavilion

SERPENTINE PAVILION I This pavilion caught my attention easily; mainly it having similarities to my previous research (so the site will stay consistent and with my specification). I like the stacked element towards this design and how it is portrayed with empty holes, and how it is linear, yet appears to be organic using linear blocks. This will be a great way to start my researching by looking at other pavilions and taking ideas and inspiration.

Design breakdown -

Here in this design breakdown I was experimenting with the shapes that were utilised and tried to make a vertically designed shape using the same element, this investigation led me to create new ideas that I could use to enhance my design. Here I investigated the hollow shapes, and looked at whether it would be a good idea to make it hollow doing some basic research, I realised that would just ruin the whole idea of a shadowed design, and since its quite compact it would be better to have some air flowing in.

Sketch-ups -

I then made some sketch-ups showcasing this stacked design, and then placed them behind to create the shadow effect by activating it on sketch. After that I did more angles showcasing the shadow that is being casted it shows this unique design. I also made some concept drawings to get an idea, and then full adapted that idea into sketch-up, whilst also using the design breakdown to make this design. Refined sketch-ups -

THE ALLIANCE I PERSEPOLIS ENTRANCE PAVILION

67 I

Secondary Research ??, The Alliance

It features similarities from my paper card research, creating the illusion of a smooth organic shape, but this time with more complex geometry e.g. left to right. I also think I can utilise this research for the top portion (that being the roof and make some type of curved shape that bends over and overlaps perhaps. And finally this research will be a great way to combine with the other research I have and make some ideas out of it.

Design breakdown -

Sketch-up ideas -

Here are some sketchup models which back up the Zaha Hadid research that I had, similarly I made some more designs but this time used the idea that was set in this research. I created some more sketch-ups to create some ideas. Or to further enhance my research on this.

Here I went back to my previous research and looked at the illusion of creating a smooth curved shape which is geometric, I think this is pretty relative and will use this to make my pavilion which I’m researching on.

In this design breakdown I looked at the main aspect, and that was the roof. The roof had a geometrical style design which is relative to my previous research on this, and I think this would be perfect to adapt so it would match. I then further researched and looked at the other elements such as the big windows that I could possibly implement and the cross-hatch support which goes around the interior (also creates a nice atmosphere). So I’ll be looking more into this hopefully and further develop this to create some ideas.

68 I Refined Design -

Refined Design -

So primarily in this slide I’ll be understanding and experimenting with the shapes I have. My theme is still linear and organic, and here I’m trying to work with the tiles and see what design ideas I can create with it. I also investigated with some of those boxes, narrowing it down into something more thinner and creating other type of designs from it where it has other type of lines and curves to it.

Another thing is this square with a circle I made, I experimented what if I could use this and increase the length to create some sort of doorway, or shape it. So I experimented by lengthening the overall shape… with the investigation I have in the middle with different type of lines and curves, I used that but mainly linear and created this design,

I made a fully refined tile with it being hollow inside. I really like how my design was hollow and from there I thought use this to make my designs even better, what this benefits from is casting natural lighting. I’ll go more in-depth with it later for this pavilion

Refined Design -

For my second part of my research, that being the alliance. I really like the top roof design of it. So I experimenting with it, this basic circular ball design, with some pieces structure on each end, this inspired me to look at the sun and it’s gravitational field in the basics and how it warps around it to give it a more smoother curve. So with that I applied that knowledge and created some new design for the roof.

With that I created some other basic roof designs, and then finally making a few designs basing that roof design. And then a refined one (without the lines so it’s much easier to see). You can see I incorporated the curves on to the rectangular shape, make perhaps looking at other shapes?...

Combined Idea -

Here I made a design using both of the researches, and prior researches in this part 2 to make this design. I added the little tile effect on to the sides, and some on the top of the roof to give it a bit more depth, and then finally adding a slope. This is a good starting point to see what I can make.

Investigating Experimenting (L+O)

69 I

Secondary Research CN, Wood Pavilion

LIN ARCHITECTS I WOOD PAVILION This space experiment is located near the river in the tourist area of Jiangxi Island in Zhenjiang, Jiangsu province. In this project, architects give up the consideration of functional elements and start to look for keywords that can define spatial elements in the environment. Proxemics is a concept developed by Columbia University anthropologist, Edward T Hall, in his book, Hidden Scales. In this project, architects deepen and extend the concept, applying it to the category of physical space, discussing how intimate space, private space, social space, and public space are defined and designed at different scales. The design itself is very unique and functional. It applies its design as functionality, by making so it creates seats, natural lighting and a desk for work outside in a safe environment.

Design Ideas -

Experimentation -

I did some experimenting, using my research on the serpentine pavilion and deciding to add that here. With this I figured out some sort of tile design that I could perhaps look into. Here I looked at the main aspects of the design, the exterior – the roof, is one of those. I looked at the slanted roof and took inspiration and made a ton more designs that have a similar style, it also seems to be rather thin which can make it more malleable with having more unique shapes.

New Ideas -

I then looked at the little curved parts which acts as an opening and seats, these curve parts don’t waste space, instead they utilise the wall and bend the part that is need to make this, making a little gap between the bottom (this also includes the windows). The structure is designed very well to let light in certain areas. Such as a back wall which emits light, and the tops, which also have another cover to protect from any rainfall.

With that research I constructed a few new ideas, I want to use these ideas, and manipulate them into creating some sort of design? Developed Ideas -

Here I made a design using those design ideas, what I did was lay the shape flat down and split it in half to create this feather, fender type shape that I really like. This experimentation will help me get an insight of this type of research that I’m working with.

70 I

Design solution 01 – Design Analysis

Thin curved fenders, or pieces. Could have some functionality in it?

The subtle curve, or different variations of it I could use?

Extended part for added depth.

Hollow opening, great for natural lighting, This curvature shape can suggest a wave? I’ve done this before in part 1, but I think I could use it once again.

Here I’m going to be picking out a design that I want to continue with, I can obviously choose some elements from these structures and add it into my pavilion, or what I like to do is combine them? I’ll look into this in this scenario. Developed Design Ideas –

Here I did a bit of experimenting and looked into all the ideas I had, with this I can have a better understanding with which design I want to necessarily pick, and something that isn’t going to work. My first notices is that I don’t really want to go with the circular shape on the let middle, that being because I think it would ruin the whole structure, and wouldn’t fit in, so instead I would cut it in half and use that portion. I also looked at the hollow one, and then with that made a design with hollow piece and some without, using the tiles from previous research.

And finally I looked at the research on the top of the pavilion, I think this one would be the most beneficial and the best one out here, there is so much into I can do.

Design Ideas, Analysis,

71 I Make the size smaller?

Placed the main structure in the middle, also represents going inside or maybe outside my library.

Round-a-bout design for aesthetics. Design Development – Extended pattern

Sketch-up Development –

Here I’ve done development, looking in to the top part. I figured out I can use some supports as I want the hole design to be hollow, or have nothing but the top and bottom, so I would need some supports to hold it into place. I also looked at the wave pattern on the top as a back elevation with the other ones with different heights. Development, refinement – Models –

Further Development –

I looked at the wave pattern and used it over here, I got the main shape and experimented by placing it besides, with that I made this design with extra supports, and the middle part being the tallest there for added depth. This just gives it now more space, and looks much better. It’s part of my specification, linear.. Maybe organic? Further development.?

Final Design –

I’ve done a bit of refinement to my model which I got black foam and used that to create this design which has a slope by using the research I’ve conducted. I decided to go with the more linear slope with these supports to hold it (appears to be like a tent). I then did a tiny further development, that being I extended the back part so there can be more room there, or so for aesthetics.

Sketch-up Elevations –

Design Ideas 01 Development process,

72 I

DESIGN IDEA I 01 A wide design which resembles a form of a wave with many layers and support to it. This design is in a form of tent, but a solid tent with the abilities to climb on the top of the design, and going through its many supports give it that added depth and security to the design. In my specification I didn’t really mention anything but besides an alethically pleasing looking pavilion, and it to be open plan, but one thing for sure is seating, and I think there can be a way to sit around the pavilion, but it would be rather uncomfortable.

The site takes all the space that is there, it isn’t really open plan, and the supports of those can come in the way when you’re walking through the pavilion which can be dangerous. Otherwise it’s open, but entering can be a bit hazardous if you’re not careful. Looking further into the design and the research I’ve conducted, I think it came out as anticipated, there could be a few places where I could perhaps change, but otherwise than that it is fine. In conclusion I very much like this design, but there could definitely be a whole design change that would level up the pavilion even more.

AIDLIN DARLNIG DESIGN I SKYHAUS

73 I

Secondary Research ??, AIDLIN DARLNIG D

Situated amongst much larger homes in the Pacific Heights districts of San Francisco, this project adapts the original design to its present day context. Central to the new design is a large multi-story interior garden atrium that is intended to capture outdoor space within the home.

This vastly sky-lit serves as a spatial hub, pulling daylight deep into the home’s interior. It features a transverse bridge and a sculpted wood wall that filters and carves light as it moves through the space. The interior itself is very modern, featuring both linear and organic aspect to it. The exterior itself is very inspiring and could be use for some elements of the pavilion to enhance the overall structure.

Design Breakdown -

With this design breakdown, I mainly looked at the top roof section of the building as that caught my attention, from there onwards, I looked at other parts of it by stacking it and using older research to find that it is very similar to the tile design that I’ve done, which was my first research slide. Furthermore I looked at this trapezium style design as I thought I could do something, some type of perspective that I found looking at the pictures in the circle.

Sketch-up -

I then made some sketch-ups using the research provided. I made this so I can apply my knowledge and create a design with it. I’ll hopefully be looking at some more linear designs, and perhaps maybe some circular design here.

From that I used that and formed a design with it, I also looked at some window designs as well, coming to most conventional ones, but I also tried making my own using the foundation of linear only.

Here I decided to make some foam models in relation to the previous slide. I decided to make some similar ones, and others not so similar by incorporating all the ideas that I gained from that slide and using it over here. I made a lot of unique designs that I used again and combined them to create even more, with this I want to do research on this slide to create new ideas for me to utilise and add onto my design. I’ll pick out elements from these slides and incorporate and develop further onwards. This will be very helpful as if I’m thinking about adding anything else, I’ll use this as a page to get some ideas from my previous research whenever needed, but I think I’m going to pick out a particular design here and forward it later on.

Design Breakdown – Investigation –

Sharp edges, The subtle curve I included

Harsh slopes,

Stacked on top sideways triangles,

Hollow,

I used my previous design and this as a way of going backwards, reverse development?... But with that I created another shape with more harsher slopes. I then analysed to understand and see what I can take from there. Here I combined both of those analysed designs make two particular designs, the bottom one being a fully developed one,

This design is quite simple but it has a lot to offer when it comes to manipulating the shapes, other variations of it, and being ambiguous in making a design with this. I primarily looked at the main structure and noticed how it was built with these layers, and layers of almost triangular, rectangles type of design, with that it stayed linear.

I got those shapes and made variations of those, experimenting and manipulating those shapes to form ideas, and other structures. I looked primarily at the top piece which I found to be the most attractive part, with that I thought about my previous work about stacked development, I looked here and investigated with that. With that I created that initial design idea that I want to forward with and develop from this design breakdown. Previous Models –

Final Idea –

I looked back and this model and saw the similarities. I decided to look back and grab those ideas that I didn’t fully incorporate or rathe use that much. This design is ambiguous and here I’ll use to help my development.

With this I have a foundation of a structure from this research that I can use and incorporate in other designs.

76 I

EAGLE I

Primary Research, Eagle,

Design Breakdown –

Here I drew a side perspective angle of the eagle looking at a way to utilise the overall shape and the other features that I can use abstract from here. I will also use my previous research as well to enhance it, or to add onto the physical shape of the eagle. I also looked at the overall shape and sectioned it out to see where I could place some features to make an actual shape, one having it be horizontal and other being vertical that could possibly be stacked (which is an element that I could use). My previous research page does has some sort of stacked design, and I’ll try using that on this shape to see where it can take me.

I took the beak of the eagle and used that as a base. With that I put in some linear shapes, that being triangles and rectangles and constructed a design from it. I also used some of those tall triangles as well incorporating in these places. With this is I have a basic foundation set, and with these other parts of the eagle I can use and manipulate them to form a structure.

Here I’m investigating whether to use a triangular shape or more of a rectangular shape. I want to form some type of design which has a way to support it-self like before which will be all open space, and with some climbing abilities?...

Here I looked at another part, this time being the back features and I liked how it slightly went up and downwards which was quite fascinating. With that I experimented with some triangular shapes to create this cross design which actually holds it self by having those points creating support. With that completed, I looked back at the eagle and made a quick design refinement and added those parts together. Here I used a both mixture of triangles and rectangles combined. I also used my previous slide research to help make it.

Final Idea –

When I started off making the structure, I created another shape which I could use to develop…

Design Analysis –

“X” style shape. It overlaps each other,

When I was constructing my initial models, I can across this by overlapping the top triangular parts together to create this, I really like the shape of this so I want to investigate and experiment with this design.

With the “X” overlapping design I looked at different variations of those x’s, one with a more bigger triangular and some having it even, with this experiment I also looked and investigated whether adding some type of triangular shape would fit it, so I created the “X” again and crossed out some parts, extended it and added so lines to create this triangular shape. With he uneven one I also made that one a bit smaller.

Tall in length,

Made sure the ends weren’t flat, but had a little bit of an angle,

Design Analysis –

I looked the trapezium like shape and thought about manipulating it and making a few more shapes with it… with this investigation I didn’t personally like the outcome so I went for another design, and that having two trapezium, one flipped vertically and connected together to create this plan, and then folding those ends to create this supported design…

Harsh linear slopes,

Unique perspective?

Flat top, remaining angled ends

Investigating, models, Experimenting

I made one last model of the M but without the caved in top, I think I should go for a simple design and see what I can do with this as I have a few ideas.

I really think this would be useful when in the constructing process I can look at changing a few details, and whenever I need ideas, I’ll also come back to these. “M” shaped design this time,

77 I

Design Analysis –

I looked at the “M” shape and made a few variations of it, I also added the little angled part on each sides and with that made a few variations.

When designing I also realised it had a few similarities with the first design and the M inbetween reminded me of that, forwarding, I also made a final design for this, but I really didn’t change much, but besides the middle.

78 I

ASOLIDPLAN I ENVELOPE HOUSE

Secondary Research, ??, Envelope house,

There are private spaces, common spaces and generous greenery. This formulate parti as a landscape double skin enveloping three levels of habitable spaces are punctured by a vertical landscape courtyard. First level is for communal use, second for elderly parents and aunt, and the third for the young family with their own private door. The design of this house is very modern and appears to be a puzzle, this overall has a linear aspect and with its greenery makes it come to life. I will probably use this to further extend my exterior and change it’s appearance once more.

Design Breakdown -

I experimented with the overall shape of the design, it seems to have quite an arbitrary shape with random windows all over the place, some which include plants and with a window, in a window. The shape is mostly shaped as an ‘E’ which some of the lengths stretch out a bit more than the others. The structure is basically a square/rectangle with windows and other things in it, scattered all over the place. I decided to grab the side plan which is shaped as an ‘E’ and experimented by making the lengths longer and shorter on some sides, creating a whole new design, whilst maintaining the same overall design concept that is placed. I also looked at the interior of the design which has a similar rectangular design but with a lot greenery (nature) inside it, which creates a nice safe atmosphere which is fresh. Design Shape Ideas -

Here I made some arbitrary designs that are in relation to this research, I decided that I’ll investigate this aspect by applying other type of geometric shapes. This aspect is quite fun to experiment because now I have a range of ideas and shapes that I can explore upon and use to add into my slide, but with this idea I have in mind, I don’t think I necessarily will, but instead use this research to further develop and experiment with this by perhaps creating a render? With this render I want to create some sort of building that is similar to this research, probably some type of apartment or something with a garage and green pots in that place etc. Because I’m interested into looking at this shapes, I think it would be great for me to actually make this design and see it for myself in 3-D.

Design Exploration, first idea of this Maintaining that linear, boxy design all round.

Design Experimentation Linear, Rectangular

DESIGN EXPERIMENTATION I Whilst I was researching on some rectangular, square designs I decided to make a little accommodation design where I tried installing all the aspects that I looked at while researching on pavilions. With this experimenting I looked and took some aspects and applied it around the window, I saw that I could use that to make it a bit more entertaining and it fitting with the theme of linear. I also investigated in some greenery that I would perhaps use later on so this is a good start. I found a lot of pots and trees that would be ideal here. With this experimentation a boring design like this could be better by having some vegetation, plants and some other props that would enhance it, and therefore make it a better overall final product.

Here I looked at developing a changing a few features on this end, I looked at some natural light reacting to the surface, also changing the overall shape of the design. These are great ideas to start and enhance my other design ideas even more.

80 I Design solution 02 – Design Analysis Sharp edges, Can cast edge shadows, if it will be glass? Sharp shard designs, with different pieces placed there

I did some analysis on the design in which I’m going to pick out some elements from these designs, and forwarding I will be using these to construct some design. I want to create another design idea, this development process will be beneficial to me.

With that research I made some developed ideas, I looked at each and every individual idea and from onwards made some new ideas that I want to choose later on; the first top left design I looked at the triangular piece and looked at how I could incorporate other shapes to it, top right I looked at probably extending the legs so there is more room, bottom left I looked at how would that overlapping design and other variations, and finally the bottom right I looked at more linear designs. This research is very valuable and I’ll use it to help me onwards from this slide to pick out a particular design that I want to follow and develop.

Design Experimentation Further Development,

Gap in-between… I can make the lines much thicker. Support by stacking them together, or connecting?.

Final Design Idea Sketch –

Instead of triangular shapes, I’ll got with some rectangles?

I’ve chosen this research primarily it being quite unique by having each ends of the structure as support which almost seems possible by looking at this picture, also that I could change its placement. I think I want to do something like that, by having some that connects each-other in arbitrary shapes – using more rectangular shapes. Design Development –

With that preliminary finished, I then made a full complete sketches of the final design idea, I made sure to have random individual pieces, and variety of lengths to this. Blocks with some holes in it, and them having eachother connect and fall in to place. As you can see the site is angled, that is because the long part on the left holds it to, supports it by angling it downwards. I think this just creates a much even better design idea since you can now climb it. And finally, it will cast a nice shadow. Sketch-ups –

Preliminary Sketch –

Here I was looking at the rectangular shape, seeing how I could use it to incorporate into my design idea, and seeing where it would lead me. I started making shapes with a bit more hollow spaces in-between, then I went back to the tile research and also incorporated those ideas over here, then finally I proceeded to have different variations of this rectangular shape, connecting them together.

82 I DESIGN IDEA I 02 A quite narrow and linear structure, with mainly rectangular pieces that are intersecting and overlapping each other to create this bizarre shape and design. I decided to a go a bit bizarre and make this design which supports itself by having each of its corner touch the ground. This design is quite ambitious but executed properly then its perfect. A few things about this design; is slanted so there is access of you going on top of the structure, another thing being that there are quite a few hollow holes which can create some nice natural lighting. But one thing that comes with the design is that it is complicated, and wouldn’t be ideal if I were to make this bigger as it is quite small. Forwarding from that I did some research on some corners and designs from my own design ideas that support eachother by using other pieces include which makes the design even better. In conclusion I think I can defiantly take some aspects of this design and apply it in my final design idea, and I would have to change some parts of it.

Design Idea 02

My Design Ideas –

I went back to my previous slides and made some newer ideas. I saw that I had quite a lot of design ideas, and particularly from there I had a few design ideas that I wanted to follow, so here instead I made a few arbitrary design ideas using the research provided in part 2. I mainly looked was at the side elevations, and then some linear designs, most preferably rectangular, triangular designs which I’m focusing on for the next design idea.

I wanted some design inspiration, so I looked at some linear triangular shapes that I’m interested in from using that design research from above, I want to use that and manipulate it into a form, probably a tall design. I then made a few more designs, but a bit more developed and I looked into some aspects of the triangular design, I also experimented by adding some curves to it to see if it would necessarily do anything, but I think this works out. Developed ideas, sketches – experimenting

SHARD I

Design Breakdown –

Primary Research, Shard,

Refined Ideas –

New Ideas –

With my design breakdown finished, I made some more redefined designs of those from earlier and with those designs I added a bit more depth into it. I also made some other designs looking into the inside and the other side of the faces, I then finally made a final one which is shaded. Model Making Designs –

Here I looked at the shard and saw the top part wasn’t fully completed, but with this I got a few design ideas. I’ve been researching about some sharp triangular shape, and the shard is one of the few towers that actually does it the best. The shard has some separate pieces on top which don’t fully connect so I used that to my advantage here, and then made some scribbles with that made some cracks which formed some shards which I used to make my own… tile? Or faces of the triangle.

I then made a design of this box to showcase some investigation to whether to have the edges protrude out a bit, and to have some sort of connecting phasing through sides?

85 I

WRAPPING I

Design Breakdown –

Wrapping around logs? –

Here I decided to investigate and experiment by adding some type of foundation, that being these logs where I placed them in random places and used the wrapping technique around this to see what I creates. I think with this unique method I can have overlapping designs more efficiently. Refinement –

For this design breakdown I looked at the basic part of the wrapping by having a square wrapped around it, simple, but here I added the rectangle to better represent, and then made the top part protrude out a little, I thought this way you can make some unique designs with this way, I want to explore a bit more into this and seeing where I will go. Perhaps with this I can also combine it with my previous research slide and experiment with that? Developed Ideas –

With that process experimented with, I applied it here by adding a bit more depth to it. As you can see it creates this unique almost flower like shape towards it. For my log I think I want the top section to be cut diagonally, with that it will give It more of a dramatic linear look to it.

I think I want to look at another type of design idea. Thinking about having another shape for the fold.

Primary Research, Wrapping,

86 I

Investigation Experimenting,

Shards – Random shards from a window crack,

Use as inspiration?

I looked at a mirror cracked scene and with that all the shards were visible, I want to experiment and use some of these shards for my design, and perhaps make some other shapes with it? Sharp corners, linear design, could be organic..

Inspiration from design 01, very similar linear shape.

I really liked the shards that I done previously, so I done the same thing here but a bit more complex by combining the shapes I have here. I can now use some of those shapes in-between to make some more refined drawings. Refinement –

Made a few shard pieces that I liked in particular, I want to now forward this, and improve it. Refinement –

Made a few refined complex wrapping designs,

With that I combined some of those designs and added a bit more depth to it, this way I can see all the curves, perhaps this could even be the dark sides where the light doesn’t hit?

I then picked the designs from there, and made developed designs from there as experimentation of more new reined ideas. Now I made more complex styles of wrapping, what I’ve done here is used paper and made a few designs, then went over with it black to showcase it’s structure (as it was hard to see).

87 I Design solution 02 – Design Analysis Sharp shard pieces, overlapping each other and wrapped together,

Similar shape, but this time I added a bit more curves,

Has sharp edges, but also somewhat a smooth curve,

Can create a nice shadow here, also could add something here,

Stacked together, wrapped quite a lot to create added depth,

Subtle curves, but creates a dramatic shape, could develop?

“L” shaped part which I looked at in my research on foam models,

Here I'm going to do a bit of experimenting onto these part on these designs, I want this design to be tall, and have a sharp top, so I’ll make a few designs investigating in different styles, then choosing one. Developed Design Ideas –

I done a bit of experimenting on all the designs above. I made sure all the designs would be fitted in the range theme of triangular, linear design, I looked at the main tile that being the sharp almost like a crafting knifes edge part; I looked at the curve and decided to remove it as I think that would just ruin the theme of linear, I did a few investigations and experimented with some sharp designs, with that I looked at the wrap designs and made a few more variations. Finally, I thought about having this wrapped design in a shape of a rectangle with linear lines going in a circular motion down (shown in the bottom right). With that I incorporated that idea into my design and added some structural points (that being the logs) to wrap around.

Design Analysis, Experimenting,

88 I

Further Development Refined designs,

To maintain the linear theme, I decided to remove the curve as it is quite distracting. Ideas Analysis Refined Design -

I want to keep this overall design, perhaps overlaying on top?

Have these structural points which I can wrap the wall around it?

Here is the final design. I went with the triangular plan with the “L” shape or more of a “7” now, from there I made different type of elevated points and having a few peaks in it. With this analysis, I’ll incorporate all the things that I’ve said into this. I want to probably go with some wood textured design that wraps it around, probably polished?

Looking at the top you can see I made sure the top part is also wrapped around until the peak, and it having different sides to it to enter, maybe some seating inside?

Thin log pieces which get taller each part, with a sharp part on top, maintaining the linear design,

Design Analysis Sharp top layered parts with each individual part being smaller, this way the structure won’t fall.

Sharp linear lines, and how it wraps around the back,

Different height variations of the structures,

I then developed and refined some of the elements, that being the structural points where I wrapped the design around, I also went with the triangular Plan design with the “L” shape that I looked at in my foam models previously,

DESIGN IDEA I 03 I went with a more narrow, sharp, taller structure which is quite unusual. Here I made a design which I got inspired by the shard (also having its similarities applied on the top). I wanted to have a pavilion that would be tall and peak through the design perhaps, and I thought about making this complex design which is relatively thin compared to the other designs. I firstly looked at some logs and made different height variations of those tall log pieces that would stick out a bit from the design, that is the foundation, onwards from there I have this average thin piece of wood and warp it around the whole design. The wrapping process is something unique that I thought about, this method of wrapping almost like cloth around the structure to give this solid finish, but it hollow inside, meaning you can access it form inside underneath as well. This design also seems to cast nice shadow, and seems to fall under minimalism. In conclusion this design is quite ideal, but there could be a few changes as I think it could be a bit too big, so instead I’ll be analysing and talking about the designs I have and perhaps combine or pick one.

Choosing Designs

Here in this slide I’ll be choosing which final design idea I want to use as a final design to further develop, and refine and put it onto my location.

DESIGN IDEA I 01

In my first design idea I went for a more simplistic type of design here where I added some type of sloped design which I got inspiration from my research and experimentations of my design. The design seems to be quite linear, but also has that very organic style themed design going towards it. I looked at waves previously before so I decided to look at it once again here. I also added some supports to the building to add more depth to it, also helping the structure support itself as it would be rather easy to get on top. I really like this design but I think it wouldn’t really fit into my site, the design is rather different with a circular pattern, which is the hub. I did quite a lot of research here, but I think there could be some aspects I can take from this where I have many times throughout part 2. In collusion I don’t think I’m going to be taking this design forward as it doesn’t really look like it really fit, also rather the design is quite boring to do look at and there isn’t really anything to refine or develop from here.

DESIGN IDEA I 02

In my second design idea I went for a more complex rectangular shape structure. I wanted to make this design somewhat connect to each-other and also support itself through each corners (design idea 01 inspiration). I made this design very open which can cast a nice beautiful shadow, also having a nice appealing design towards it with each ends holding its balanced, it can also be quite disorienting, and fun to be around. This design is almost perfect, but I think this design can be a bit too disorienting and to it to be put in the centre or outside, I think it wouldn’t really match with it’s pieces going everywhere. I would perhaps use some elements of this structure most defiantly, but in collusion I don’t think I can go onwards with this design, but take some inspiration and elements or combine?

DESIGN IDEA I 03

In my third and final design idea I went for this more tall structure that I took inspiration from the Shard. I personally loved the shard shape and how it has those little actual shards on top, so I incorporated that design element onto this design here. I also looked at some wrapped designs, and that is what heavily inspired me to go with this wrapped around design throughout these logs. I absolutely love this design, and I think I want to use this design for my final design. But I think there definitely needs some development and refinement here and there.

Now thinking I suppose I could possibly combine all the ideas from these design ideas and use it, I think I would do something like that to get a better overall final model.

Final Verdict -

DESIGN IDEA I 03 I chose design idea 03, but I think I will also use some elements of these other designs, I think the next slide I’ll be taking some ideas form these designs and seeing some relation and using it to go forwards.

91 I Final Ideas Analysis -

Smooth linear curve on top which you can climb, also has supports,

Having some of those to be hollow, and how it is tilted on purpose to have this unique style of support,

Sharp overall design, also consisting of different pieces of to support the structure, and having different height variations also included.

Rectangular shapes going through eachother

Wave style design, also different height variations.

Different height variations of those pillars,

Finding ideas by combining -

Chosen Idea -

With those designs analysis completed I drew a couple of designs and from there saw a few ideas and relations. I saw the tile design keep on popping up which I’ve done in my first secondary research page for part 2, with that I looked at other designs and it also had a similar style, with that I decided to look at some shadows, and other type of tile designs that is different from a rectangle. I also looked at other aspects as in overlapping the designs and seeing what type of shapes I would create. A bit of investigation on some new ideas and experimenting of some ideas that I want to forward with and develop. With that completed, from those designs I chose the tile design. I really like the shadow that it would cast and also how versatile it can be.

Shards, further developmnt Experimenting,

Models -

Shards – further development

I looked at some wood models which have similar appearance to some the design I’ve be developing and used that to visualise, understand and therefore make some refinements,

Using the shards to get some design shapes,

I chose these designs, and used the outline format to assist my design development

I looked at the shards and picked out some shapes from there. I then used those shapes to create some designs and started my first few developments on the idea I chose… I primarily looked at the shadow which was pretty unique.

Here I looked into some plan type of designs and different patterns of those designs to get the best shadow,

With those design development, I made a refined design that I want to go on one of those walls which will be separate, I also cut it down making it much easier.

93 I Sketches – ideas, development

Design development, Looking at Shadows,

Experimentation with some longer designs, also seeing what shapes it creates,

Sketches – ideas,

Sketch-up - experimenting

Sketch-up - experimenting

Here I looked at some height variations and some other patterns of those tiles, seeing what type of designs I can create from there. Going with a more curvature style design, Here I experimented with some the shadows, looking into what plan style of this would work best, Sketches – ideas,

With that curve I ended up creating some “S” type of design; I refined it, applied the height variations and finally created this design which I like in particular,

I looked into more staggered designs here, and adding some more of those tiles to see what type of shadow I will create,

Final Idea -

94 I Cut in half to make it more suitable?

Experimenting –

Tile effect, stacking it together, Sharp linear top, could be changed? Different variations of those seat design…

Tile effect again, but different angle,

Thinking about adding some gaps in-between?

Here I looked at overlapping the design which created this tile effect that I’ve been researching on, but I think I don’t really like it from this model visualisation, so instead, I’ll probably put some gaps?

Here I’m developed the shape that I want to use. I firstly cut the shape in half, then made a few variations of its length and width, with that I a few seating design variations or vegetation? Development, refinement –

Experimenting –

I made more development refinement process, here I looked at the sharpness and thought about removing it and adding another linear curve, or a flat top. With that I created the design you see on the bottom left, I think I’m very happy with it, and the shadow it casts is rather unique. Models –

Made different variations of those designs to experiment with… Flattening it down? This creates some seating, and a little elevated hill?

Experimenting, models, Models,

95 I

Sketch-ups,

Sketch-up –

Here I created my main parts to my pavilion, I went with the “S” shape as it ideally standing out the most, I also added the little seating or to add some vegetation area as-well.. I’m thinking about adding some benches and vines around the structure and some greenery. I made a final sketch-up model of the design, here I took pictures of different angles of the pavilion and looked primarily at the shadow it casted. Model process –

After the sketch-up I made a real life model of the design, this way I can get a better visualisation of the site, and if there is anything that Is needed to be improved I can see it properly.

96 I

FINAL DESIGN I A height varied design in a shape of an “S” which gradually goes down is unique, and ambitious. This design I took the fundamentals of all the design ideas, and taking different aspects and features of the design to make this one followed staggered design which is set to cast a nice shadow of feathers. This design is very open, and having quite tight and closed off gaps which the light would go through and many other places to enter. There is also a ton of seating, and places to relax and communicate with the two different sections, one being the top, and the smaller one in the bottom. This design is fully refined and developed after researching on a particular face plan, I also looked at some vegetation which I got from my experimenting on my rectangular design (which would be seen more in my real life model). Finally, in conclusion this design has a nice consistent flow to it, a staggered design which casts a very unique shadow. It fits perfectly within my brief and specification.
