PORTFOLIO OF A DOCTOR WHO SHOOTS SELECTED WORKS OF AHMAD AULIA RIZALY 2012-2018

Hi!

I’m a photographer who is trapped in the world of medicine. Today, I’m a medical doctor. Yes, medical doctor. I know this sounds weird, but that’s how life is supposed to be sometimes.

About Me Ahmad Aulia Rizaly, born in 1992, currently residing in Bau-Abu. Have been a photographer since 2007. Currently working as part-time medical doctor in RSUD BauBau and full-time photographer. I’m now roaming the streets of cities, beaches, mountains, anywhere I can get photos. Recently, I’ve been writing about stories behind my photos on my Instragram.

What I do Any kind of photography, especially landscape, street, and astro. I can learn and do anything being thrown at me. All I need is a client who gives me a challenge to do something I haven’t done.

Glodok// Jakarta Glodok, an area in West Jakarta, is also known as Pecinan or Chinawon since Dutch colonial era. It is considered as the biggest pecinan in Indonesia as most traders and residents are Chinese descent. Back in November 1740, the East Indies Company (VOC) designated Glodok as residential area for Chinese ethnics. Today, it is the biggest Chinatown in Indonesia and one of the biggest Chinatowns in the world. Personally, Glodok is my favourite spot in Jakarta. It makes me feel the purest form of plurality in Indonesia.

Imlek// Petak9 Chinese New Year or widely known as Imlek in Indonesia is an important Chinese festival celebrated at the turn of traditional Chinese calendar. The festival is centuries old and associated with several myths and customs. Traditionally, the festival was a time to honour deities as well as ancestors. There’s no other place better to photograph the festivities of Imlek than Petak Sembilan which is located in one of the largest Chinatowns in the World, Glodok.

Thamrin// Jakarta Jalan M.H. Thamrin is one of the main streets of business district of Central Jakarta. This 2.5 km road is home for the towering skyscrapers, giving Jakarta its metropolis look. However, everything changes on Sunday morning when everyone is free to walk on Jalan M.H. Thamrin, turning this symbol of metropolis into a road in which everyone can walk on.

LittleIndia// Singapore As it is named, Little India is the center of Indian ethnic in Singapore. Little India is frenetic, messy, yet fun. Its vibrance pleases the eyes the moment you step in Serangoon Road, where Little India is located. I did not highlight the tourist attractions in Little India. Instead, I looked deeper into the alleys, the people, and how they interacted and live in this beautiful area.

ABC// Bandung Jalan ABC or named ABC Straat in the back in colonial era is the place where citizens of Bandung can find almost anything; electronic goods, coffee, cheap glasses, you name it. For me, it is the place where I can find the photograph of livelihood in Bandung. It also connects my favourite streets in Bandung. From Jalan ABC, I can walk to Braga and then to Jalan Asia Afrika which is famous for tourists.

Losari// Makassar Pantai Losari is unarguably the most iconic tourist attraction at the city of Makassar. The beautiful sunset every dusk has made this beach earned its reputation. After spending decades of living in Makassar and seeing Losari, I have learnt that everyone has their own way to enjoy Losari.

Cina// Makassar The Chinese ethnics have set their roots strong in Makassar. The first settlers first came in 15th century to trade and make a living in various regions in Indonesia, including Makassar. As time goes by, the Chinese who were once considered as outsiders become an inseparable part of Makassar. However, several tragedies in the past have put the Chinese in difficult situation which have made them a little “shy” to a stranger with a camera roaming around the street.

To Riaja// Toraja The Toraja are an ethnic group indigenous to a mountainous region of South Sulawesi, Indonesia, which is located in the regency of Tana Toraja Most of the population is Christian, and others are Muslim, and the most interestin one; local animist belief known as aluk (“the way”). The word Toraja comes from Buginese language term to riaja, meaning “people of the uplands”. The Dutch in 1909 named the people Toraja. The Torajans are worldly known for their elaborate funeral rites, burial sites carved into rocky cliffs, massive peaked-roof traditional houses known as Tongkonan, beautiful wood carvings, and last but not least, the coffee.

Tenun// Toraja Tenun ikat is Indonesian traditional fabric made from woven weaves of woofs which are previously knotted and dipped in natural coloring agents. Before being woven, the yarns are knotted with ropes, according to the desired pattern. At the end, the fabric will be dipped in the coloring agents, and the knotted parts will create the pattern. When my friends and I went to Toraja, we bought several Tenun ikat and had fun with it a little while.

//Keraton Yogyakarta Keraton Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat is a palace complex located in the city of Yogyakarta. It is the official seat of the reigning Sultan of Yogyakarta and his family and servants. It also serves as a center of Javanese culture. Nowadays, Keraton also serves as one of the main tourist attraction of Yogyakarta. Every year, tourists from all over the world are coming to Yogyakarta to taste a little piece of Javanese culture in the Keraton. Nonetheless, the streets of Keraton stays the same. The Javanese culture and hospitality do not seem to be affected by the modern world around it.

Landscapes// Indonesia Just like most photographers, landscape is my root. This is all everything started. I choose to photograph the landscapes of Indonesia over the years because I think Indonesia is one of the most picturesque country ever. It has beautiful beaches, sun that shines almost the whole year, a truly tropical gem.

TheUniverse// Indonesia I’ve been pointing my camera up to the stars since 2012. It started with a silly reason; to make a star-trail photo to give to my girlfriend as a birthday present. Fortunately, during the process of learning on how to photograph a proper astrophotograph, I fell in love with it. Even though my relationship with that girlfriend of mine ended years ago, it seems like my love to the stars and the universe lives on until today.
