THE THIRD PLACE Interweave Typology: Urban Plaza - Thesis Project Location: Kochi, Kerala Year: 2023 Third Place | noun 1. A space for informal social interaction. In contrast to first places (home) and second places (work), third places allow people to put aside their concerns and simply enjoy the company and conversation around them. Due to the rapid urbanization and migration, an increasing number of urban inhabitants find themselves grappling with diminished social networks. Like every tier-II city, Kochi is in dire need of quality open spaces which is difficult to identify in fast-growing urban centres. Identifying spaces that resonate within the core of the populace becomes imperative in establishing a third place, one that inherently draws and engages the community. The project aims to create a third place near the marine waters fostering a diverse community of people from all walks of life by providing wide range of activities and spaces for leisure, work, learning and play. Emphasis is placed on sustainability, contributing to the local economy, and promoting mental well-being.

LONG HOUSE Overture Typology: Residence Location: Kozhikode, Kerala Year: 2019 The innate human desire for cultural connectedness to one’s environment is mirrored in the architecture. The approach involves engaging with traditional architectural elements in a contemporary manner, distilling their essence while achieving a fresh and inventive interpretation. Spread over the entire site, the residence showcases a fusion of modern tropical design amalgamated with traditional vernacular architecture. The design accommodates the brief of the client which was to create distinctive spaces for guests and family, catering to the needs of a fourmember household. A climate sensitive design with sloping roofs and large overhangs is utilized to combat the heavy monsoons. Semi permeable spaces such as patio and large expanses of veranda from the dining room and bedrooms take advantage of the tropical climate of Kerala. The material palette has been kept very minimal with steel, wood and exposed concrete as the primary elements.

URBAN ENCLAVE Synergy Typology: Social Housing Location: Kozhikode, Kerala Year: 2020 Pootheri Sathram Colony remains one of the last informal settlements in the urban context, amidst the city swindle. The initial crucial decision for the project was to preserve the construction on the very land that had served as a home for these inhabitants. The project is dedicated to enhancing the living conditions of a community comprising 22 families. It was significant to introduce a gathering space and adequate ritual space considering their culture. This approach aimed to foster a sense of unity and cultural continuity within the community Contemplating the revenue potential of the site, the project introduces a commercial space strategically partitioned from the residential area. This separation ensures that the commercial space complements the residential area without compromising the essence of the community’s living experience. The design, more than shelter and structure, reflects the community’s sentiments and maintains a deep respect for its traditional values and stakeholders.

GROW GRID Thrive Typology: Competition - Observation & Action Network Location: Kozhikode, Kerala Year: 2020 The pandemic evoked the need for self-sufficiency. In a remote village in Perambra, a settlement comprising daily wage workers faced challenges in securing employment, financial resources, and transportation for purchasing essential goods. This necessitated a paradigm shift in our approach, placing greater control in the hands of individuals over their circumstances. To address this issue, our team proposed a lowmaintenance hydroponic farming pod incorporating wick irrigation. Designed to occupy minimal space, the pod was conceived to be adaptable to various sites and surroundings. The conceptualization took into account not only the specific needs of the affected community but also aimed to benefit society at large. If every person had a farm garden of their own, it would provide a plethora of benefits to individuals and the broader community. Consequently, such a decentralized approach to agriculture could lead to a reduction in the cost of living, thereby enhancing overall quality of life.

The project can be built either as stand alone, prefabricated or built attached to a house. The roofing sheets are sloped to create maximum water yield for rainwater harvesting. Reservoirs placed at top to maintain pressure to pipes below.Internal pipes are placed at a zigzag manner so as to ensure consistent water runoff to all levels. Greenhouse effect created ensures maximum yield. Row bags used instead of generic plant pots to save on cost and weight. The sloped placement of plants ensure that no plant shades another plant.

The area predominantly witnesses a humid climate with lush greenery, and the Thusharagiri waterbody flows in front of the site, creating a microclimate within the premises. The design aligns with the scenic charm of site. Every architectural detail, from space utilization to the integration of local materials, has been carefully crafted.
