Prerequisite No knowledge of statistics is required. Delegates should be familiar with Windows, and know how to open, save and close files. Dates Every Wednesday, subject to there being at least 4 delegates attending. Morning session and afternoon session Time TBC Venue Central London venue (UK) Materials The course is based on the course text provided on the day. Delegates are welcome to bring in their own data to analyse – check with us first. Refreshments and lunch are included in the fee. Course content This is a basic course that covers fundamental aspects of statistics, and will be useful whatever your application of statistics –health sciences, engineering, social science etc. The course sets out by presenting a mini questionnaire used in a survey. Whether you have collected the data from a survey of a clinical trial, how does one go about entering data into SPSS, and when the data is in SPSS, how do you go about analyzing it? We show you how to enter data into SPSS, and in Part 1 of this course, we have to cover two popular statistical topics. Descriptive statistics for data gives you a summary of individual columns of data. Crosstabs analysis has a role to play where a questionnaire is involved in the data gathering stage, and is used to test the association of two attributes, say death due to lung cancer and smoking.
Data management Recognising data type: nominal, ordinal, scale Entering data How to import Excel files Automatic recoding Delete, insert, and move variables in Data View Descriptive statistics Measures of centrality: mean , median, mode Measures of variability: variance, standard deviation, IQR Generating table of basic stats Basic charts Formatting charts Importing charts into Word Clustered bar charts for comparing groups
Programming A taster to using SPSS syntax (speeds up analysis)
Crosstabs Hypothesis testing: the basic idea Crosstabs theory Chi-square test How to report results Rule of 5 Collapsing groups Measuring the strength of a relationship Odds and odds ratio Controlling for a third variable
Item in italics denotes theoretical content. Everything else is hands-on. Items in grey denote non core topics that may be covered if there is time.
FAQ Which version of SPSS will we use? We will use SPSS 17. I find statistics hard to grasp. Will the course be too quick for me? Although it is a basic course, we think this course is rather ambitious in what it covers in a day. However, so long as you are prepared to work hard, you will get a lot out of the course, and we will do our best to ensure you enjoy the day! Delegates taking the course are likely not to have any background in statistics, so the pace is likely to be fairly gentle. If you are unsure about your suitability, write to us. How is the training delivered? For each topic, we cover the concepts from a non-algebraic way; a SPSS demonstration which delegates mimic; exercises to practise the technique using SPSS. What does the fee cover? The fee covers:
instruction room hire course manual, including solutions to exercises refreshments and lunch hire of a laptop if a supplement is paid.
I have data I need to analyse. Can I bring it along and use it? Data is provided for exercises during the course. However, delegates are welcome to bring their own data and use them for the exercises. If you do wish to do this, you will need to contact us and we will let you know whether the data you have is suitable for the course.
Do you provide in-house training? We can bring the course to your organisation. All you have to do is provide the PCs, delegates, and a data projector.
