A self-promoted AHRMA National, in the Southwest Region (Southern California), was a shot in the dark since AHRMA member turnout with co-hosted events in the past have been light. However, the crew put in months of planning and hard work that ultimately paid off, and the event was a success. As most events, there is always room for improvement and our team is aware of those and after several discussions with the track owners, who now understand what we need in order to grow this event, I feel we are set to have a bigger and better outcome along with a more vintage-friendly MX track for 2022.
The event kicked off on a chilly Saturday morning with trials competition. Trialmaster, Morgan Proffitt, set up a wonderful trial with sections laid out in the rocky and hilly terrain of Anza, California. The sections were fun, vintagefriendly, yet challenging, for our upper-level riders such as Ralph Foster taking five points on the day and Matt Parsons with 10. 35 riders competed in the trial. Winners of the day’s event included: Premier Heavyweight Expert – Matt Parsons; Premier Heavyweight Intermediate – Michael Miller; Premier Lightweight Expert – Robert Belliciti; Prem Lightweight Intermediate – Tyrus Wilson; Classic Expert – Joe Klokkevold; Classic Intermediate – John Hart; Modern Classic Master - Ralph Foster; Modern Classic Expert –

After the Trial was completed, the event rolled into Cross Country on an amazingly well prepared loop laid out by Pat Wilkening (Patch Wookie) with the help of Jeff Bushey from Bushey Ranch. The course consisted of wide-open fast desert style sand woops, big, bermed corners and tight single track through the brush and even a couple tight, hard/easy split sections through some rocks laid out by Off-road Director, Anthony Paul. Cross Country is split into two separate races one being Vintage Cross Country pre1974 machines and all Women classes Post Vintage included, and all Novice classes Post Vintage included, followed by our Post Vintage Expert and Intermediate classes.
The first race of the day is our Vintage group taking off for their one hour plus a lap on the leader race. The first rider through the scoring tent was Chet Mauer in the Sportsman Open Expert leading the field of 20 riders. Chet would end up taking the overall in the Vintage Cross Country race followed by Wild Child Kaile Duncan racing on her Yamaha TY175 Trials bike taking second overall on the day.
