Jerry Paul: The man behind the tournament Neel Rao Reporter

erry Paul: the man, the coach, the legend. So who is Jerry Paul anyway? Though his name is often associated with the AIBT tournament, many people, including dedicated players on the Arcata Varsity boys basketball team, are unaware of the contribution he has made. Not only was Jerry Paul the founder of the AIBT tournament, he was the epitome of coaching. Paul was inducted into the California Coaches Association's Hall of Fame in 1993. He began coaching in 1959 at Arcata High School and continued to coach various sports for 32 successful years. Of the 32 years he coached, he managed to secure two boys championship titles. Paul also went on to coach the girls basketball team for several years. In addition to coaching girls and boys basketball, he coached track, cross-country, tennis, golf, and taught physical education. When the tournament was founded in 1968, it became one of the first preseason, 8-team tournaments in California. Naturally, it soon grew to be very competitive. Even after his retirement from Arcata High, Paul continued to attend the AIBT year after year. As of 1998, Paul is sadly no longer with us. Following his passing, the tournament has been held in his honor. His

wife, Adair Paul, has continued to attend every AIBT since, bringing her 12 grandchildren to the tournament with her. Their grandchildren have traditionally received a shirt every year they have been in attendance. The determination is evident on the faces of the players on the court as they strive to earn an AIBT championship title. Each team is all the more intent on sharing the glory of the many schools that came before them. They wish to see their names hang on the “wall of winners”, alongside the other greats of the prestigious AIBT tournament. The tournament has easily become one of the longest running, most popular pre-season tournaments in Northern California, gaining increasing popularity over the 46 years it has been running. Throughout all the years, many memorable moments have been created. Coach Rob reminisced about a pep-rally dunk contest in which Lowell High School from San Francisco won the dunk contest by creating a human staircase. Unsurprisingly, this school specialized in engineering. He recalled another time when an Arcata player, not nearly the tallest on the team, made an amazing dunk after jumping from close to the free throw line. The elated crowd went up in an uproar and he won the dunk contest with all 10-point votes. Of the many years the tournament has been running, both coach Rob and Arcata

High Varsity boys Basketball coach Allen Schmidt agree that last year’s AIBT marked a highlight in the history of the tournament. Taking into consideration all the talent that appears at the tournament, it comes with no surprise that many of the participating players have gone on to play college ball. One

such player, Dell Demps from Mt. Eden High School, went on to play professionally for teams such as the Golden State Warriors, San Antonio Spurs, and the Orlando Magic. This year of AIBT will hopefully prove to be just as exciting as last year’s tournament. Good luck to all the teams!

Megan Vina This past soccer season, Megan Vina played goalie for the Division 1 CSU Bakersfield Roadrunners. With much success on the field, and enjoying the perks of a built-in family on the team, Vina has had a memorable first year of collegiate sports. “It’s been awesome to go straight into my freshman year with a bunch of friends from all over the world, and not just people from the soccer team either. I’ve gotten close to people on the swim, track, and basketball teams too. The athletes at Bakersfield are all super tight knit,” Vina stated about the easily forged relationships. And at the D1 level you certainly need those good friendships to help get through the intensive training. In-season, the team has workouts six days a week, oftentimes twice in one day. Besides the great memories and great bonds Vina has made so far this year, she also had to concede that “all the free gear is pretty cool.”

Latrell Wilson Latrell Wilson is playing basketball at Cabrillo Junior College near Santa Cruz. After spending the entire off-season working on his game, basketball season has finally started. When asked about how his basketball season is going, Wilson reported that, “Basketball is going good. It was a big adjustment the first tournament, playing in college and all, getting used to the speed and strength, but I've gotten used to it now and feel really confident. I played much better in the second tourney though. I went eleven for seventeen on three pointers in those three games. We are four and two right now. I get a lot of playing time, I'm the sixth man as of now, and I'm leading the team in threes and three point percentage! But yeah, things are going good, super excited about the rest of the season, feeling super confident right now. We have our first two home games this weekend so that will be tight!”

Katerina Rocker-Heppe Last spring, 2013, Arcata High graduate Katerina RockerHeppe signed her National Letter of Intent to play college soccer at UC Merced and become a Bobcat. Since then, she has been working hard, taking on double days during the weeks before the start of school, undergoing fitness testing, and participating in pre-season scrimmages. While she wasn’t expewcting to play, her work ethic led her to lots of playing time in a starting position on the field as a defender. However as others were injured, she was moved to outside midfielder, a position unfamiliar to her. Overall, Rocker-Heppe contributed one goal and a few assists to the Bobcat team. When asked how she likes UC Merced, RockerHeppe responded, “I like that it’s different than Humboldt. I do miss home, but it’s a good type of change.”

Will Taylor Will Taylor is playing basketball for Humboldt State University right here in Arcata. Taylor told us that, “Basketball is going really well actually. As of today I'm leading the team in minutes per game; second on the team in points per game with 14.2, and second on the team in rebounds per game with 7.0. I’m also fourth in the CCAA, our basketball conference, in rebounds per game. It's definitely been an adjustment living on campus, but I love having a support system so close to home. You learn how to be independent and take care of things on your own. As for college basketball, the biggest change has been the pace and the physicality. I definitely had to become stronger and quicker. But yeah, the support for HSU basketball is great and playing where you grew up is pretty cool and I feel lucky to have the chance to do that. Not many people get the opportunity!”

AHS Ballers: eligible bachelors Errol Funk Sports Editor

It’s that time of year again ladies: the holidays are right around the corner, and of course the AIBT is fast approaching as well. Having a flock of new faces on campus stimulates the curiosity amongst our girls, it can be described as nothing less than a feeding frenzy amongst the female community at Arcata High. However, this article is here to shed light back on our own. Many of our varsity players are single, believe it or not, and are more than capable of spreading the love.

Luke “Dr. Smooth” Graves If you need a shoulder to cry, Luke’s your main man. He’s always prepared with tissues and chocolate. Fret not girls, his kind and gentle words will get you through anything. Just being around his glowing aura and his sensitive intuitiveness is enough to make you fall madly in love with him. Best Feature: “My soothing and extremely comforting voice.” Hobbies: “Scrapbooking and jarring delicious jams and jellies.” Favorite Movie: Chocolate First Date Meal: “Anything my baby wants, my baby gets, but if worse comes to worse mashed potatoes with a side of gravy.”

Gillen Martin/PEPPERBOX

Taylor/Lakota “Two for One” Camp If double dates are your thing, look no further, the Camp twins are at your service. These classy gents are big time ballers, known for making it hail at local establishments. When these two aren’t busy bringing home the bacon, you’ll be sure to find them doing their ‘thang.’ A word of advice girls, this is a package deal so bring a friend along. Taylor’s Best Feature: “Probably my left nipple.” Taylor’s Hobbies: Extreme couponing Taylor’s Favorite Movie: A Lot Like Love Lakota’s Best Feature: “Definitely my right nipple, no doubt.” Lakota’s Hobbies: Grocery shopping Lakota’s Favorite Movie: Titanic First Date Meal: “We’re not cheap so we always take our girls to Carls Jr, the drive thru. We don’t have time to sit, we have things to do and places to see.”

courting on and off the court

Gillen Martin/PEPPERBOX

Ben “Teddy Mamba” Albright Well ladies, what can’t be said about this stud muffin? He comes out of the oven hot. He’s known for being kicked back and quiet off the court, but there is so much more to him. Once you break through his hard shell, it will be nothing but sweets for the rest of the time you have with him. You’ll never have to worry about this well-behaved gentleman getting in trouble, he’s the epitome of manners. Best Feature: “My sensitive listening skills.” Hobbies: “Going to Build a Bear Workshop and trying to build a bear that represents me, it’s impossible.” Favorite Movie: The Vow First Date Meal: “I always take my girl to the candy shop because you are what you eat and I’m sweet.” Tristan “The Big Cactus” Espy Simply put, he’s a gentle giant who loves to have a good time. With an abnormal amount of energy, you won’t run out of things to do with this guy. Also being a second year culinary student, there’s a good chance he could make something for his girl without burning it…maybe. Tristan can be described as a 6’7 all around man. It’s pretty hard to find something he’s not good at. Best Feature: “I couldn’t really single any one thing out”. Hobbies: “Unsinking the Titanic, out shining the sun, hunting adult deer, then reading to the orphaned baby deer.” Favorite Movie: Brokeback Mountain First Date Meal: “I’ll eat just about anything and most likely my date’s food as well, but it works out because I like my girls thin.”

Gillen Martin/PEPPERBOX

Logan “The Silver Stallion” Rooney Simply put, he’s just a freight train of love. If you’re looking for some, I’d recommend a one way ticket. It would also be good for me to inform you that you should get on the waiting list for a heart transplant. Yours will most likely melt immediately after contact with the Stallion. Best Feature: “My unmatched looks.” Hobbies: “Counting the stars and some occasional competitive dog grooming.” Favorite Movie: Easy A First Date Meal: “Roscoe’s Chicken n’ Waffles.”

What’s not to love about Franklin boys? what he thought about the girls’ obsession over Franklin boys, and he simply responded with, “I don’t blame them…” Matthew Mayer has a more pessimistic view on it, “I think girls go crazy because they’re not from here

nce a year, a feeding frenzy occurs between the fiendy females of Arcata High School. This event is also known as the Arcata Invitational Basketball Tournament and brings the gorgeous boys of Franklin High School and other fine institutional learning establishments to our stomping grounds. Mark your calendars, ladies. So what makes Franklin so special? Growing up in Humboldt, we’re used to pale, porcelain skin and not such lean mean fighting machines. The Franklin Wildcats are the epitome of what Humboldt County boys are not. Not only does Franklin bring tall physiques and Sacramento sun-kissed skin, but also six packs and rockin’ flat tops. Arcata boyfriends worry about the day Franklin crosses our county line. We asked Georgie Cavinta

and they are different.” Mayer said, trying to explain our obsessions. The girls have the best view on Franklin boys. We basically believe they are sent from above and have halos around their heads. We searched the entire school, and finally found a girl who did NOT know who the Franklin boys were-- Kyri Cossolotto. After a brief expla-

When they pull up I’m like dayyyymmmmmmm! How you doin!? - Margaux Karp

- Nathan Heidrick nation, Cossolotto responded with, “Oh! I heard they’re hot!”. Of course. Senior Margaux Karp pretty much explained what everyone goes through when Franklin arrives at AHS. “When they pull up I’m like dayyyymmmmmmm! How you doin!?” Karp said, after being asked how she felt about Franklin. Even the guys at Arcata High School can’t deny Franklin’s gorgeous glow. Nathan Heidrick, a confident sopho-

tee that every girl at Arcata-and most of the guys as well-roots for Franklin. “I just love every year when they come up and I get to see their hot bods.” Heidrick confessed, when asked if he enjoys Franklin’s looks as much as we do. Not only are Franklin guys absolutely gorgeous, but they’re also majestic basketball players. Franklin High School won AIBT three years in a row in 2009, 2010, and 2011. The wild-

cats have won their league six times since the 2004/05 season. Their tall, muscular bodies also help them win the dunk contest. Franklin boys are the only reason the AIBT rally is worth going to and why it is filmed by 85% of the AHS female student body. Year round we look back on our videos of the Franklin boys, which make us incredibly excited and giddy for the next AIBT. So basically, Franklin is hot.

Navarre confirmed. Don’t worry tigers, you can sleep now. No more concern for the future of the sixth men. The legacy is being transferred as we speak. “We tried to pass it on, and no one stepped up to the plate originally,” Cather stated, “We put it in the hands of Georgie Cavinta and Matthew Mayer more than anyone else.” And it seems they fully intend to step up and have already started devising this year’s plans. “We are currently planning a trip to Pelican Bay to obtain orange jumpsuits,” said Mayer adding, “We’ve been lifting in anticipation of the season.” Other prospective members include River Sween, Jose Lopez, Margaux Karp, Tristen Thron, Dayne Deppe, Jarrett Mayo, and Morgan Brown. “We’re gonna do our part,” Cavinta promised.

We’ve been lifting in anticipation of the season. - Junior Matthew Mayer

“In recent memory Arcata has always had great basketball teams...cheering on a team where losing becomes habit is just morally depressing...a winning team has definitely been part of the sixth men crew,” 2013 sixth man Forrest Lewis said. Coach Rob sees the correlation between the sixth men

and the team’s triumphs a little differently: “The sixth men have grown not because of the team’s success, but as part of the success.” Maybe the graduates are uncertain of this year’s boys’ varsity team, but this year’s players seem positively confident. “We’re a young team, but we’ve got some talent...we’ll have a winning record,” junior Lakota Camp said. Although most of the sixth men’s signs, towel-waving, and ear-splitting cheers are completely appropriate, they have run into some slight disputes with referees and administration in the past. “The administration wanted us to pump up our crowd through cheering, but we were more focused on achieving this goal by ridiculing the opponents and refs. This caused quite a bit of tension at the beginning of the season and didn’t really settle until after several meetings with Monge and frequent threats of consequences including suspension for anything related to yelling “RIP squad” at Mckinlleyville players, fans, and cheerleaders,” Lewis recounted. Contrary to popular belief, our administration does love our sixth men almost as much as students do. Mr. Navarre is a huge advocate of the group and supports their existence, but he does need to consider our rival’s feelings: “I love that students care so much about our sports… however I don’t want the fans and competitors from other teams to walk away feeling like it was a negative experience…I want everyone to have class and style.”

Questions: 1. How many years have you reffed? 2. What’s your pre-game warm up? 3. How do you stay fit in the offseason, mentally and physically? 4. What’s the worst thing a fan/ coach has done? 5. Favorite officiating call? 6. What’s your biggest pet peeve a player does? 7. Would you consider yourself a strict ref? 8. What’s your reffing nickname? 9. What’s another job you have or a hobby? 10. What things do you like for the players to do?

1. I've officiated for a total of 12 years which include 9 years of high school and 3 years at the collegiate level. 2. Nothing too wild and crazy, just drink lots of liquids and stretch! Communicate with my partner all different aspects of the game like rivalry, rule changes, points of emphasis, basically just make sure we are prepared to give the kids 100%. 3. Offseason is spent with my family since I am away from home December through March. I participate in lots of activities with my son like riding bikes and playing multiple sports. 4. Nothing frustrates me more than a fan/coach/player being disrespectful to the game. As an official, our duties are to control the game to make sure no advantage/disadvantage has been made. I officiate because I have fun, not to run around and get yelled at! So in the years of officiating, I've seen a wide variety of things that could be written in a good size book! LOL 5. I would have to say a "player control foul," is the hardest call to make because so many things are taken into consideration. 6. I would have to say with our youth watching professional sports all the time, my biggest pet peeve would have to be the mimicking of professional athletes. Be yourself and play as a team! 7. Not at all! As long as the rules of the game are followed and there is no advantage/dis-

advantage being made. 8. Hmmm....I have no idea? You might want to ask the coaches or fans that one? LOL 9. I manage a heating and air company which keeps me super busy. 10. I have 2 major requirements when out on the floor for our student athletes: express great sportsmanship and have fun!

Alan Mendes:

1. 30 years 2. Lots of stretching and when possible a nice hot shower prior to putting on my referee uniform. 3. I go to referee camp every June in Chico, Ca. 4. A fan threw a water bottle at me from the stands during a game. 5. The technical foul. Lol. 6. Poor Sportsmanship 7. Strict on respecting the game of basketball, the players, the game officials, and most importantly "Sportsmanship"! 8. The Sheriff 9. Hobby-Volunteer Firefighter, 29 yrs. 10. Play hard, have fun, and have good sportsmanship.

Rollin Trehearne:

1. I have been a basketball official for 14 years. I also officiate football and have done that for 21 years 2. Physically? Stretching mainly. We talk pre-game before every game to get 'mentally' warmed up. Discussing our mechanics, rules, etc. 3. I do better mentally staying fit than physically staying fit.

Mentally we all study rules, begin training sessions months before the season, attend out of the area training camps and conduct our own training during local summer camps. Physically I try to do some running and walking, hit the gym (not enough) as well as 3 months of football officiating helps too. 4. Don't recall anything 'bad'. They all have their 'moments' but I don't retain that. No need to. 5. I recall one moment during a Nicali championship game when Coach Brad Warze's girls had a foul that I had to reach for as my partner was screened out from seeing. As I reported the foul to the table and stayed tableside Coach Warze was riding me loud about the call. Under his breath though he quietly said it was a great call but he was trying to get some life into his team. Best part of this is we were in front of the radio broadcasters and the radio audience heard everything including Warze's confession to me. Still makes me smile. 6. Forgets it's a team sport 7. I try to manage a game well so it's fair and enjoyed by all participants. How's that for a side step? 8. Don't think I have one... 9. This is my hobby although my job is a lot of fun too. My wife and I both enjoy riding our Harley's across country and we both love to travel a lot. 10. Enjoy the game, winning or losing and remember it. They learn too soon (or is it late) that it will only be a memory of their youth soon.

blind and deaf? Bruce Ziemer:

1. I’ve officiated 19 years in total in California and Illinois. 2. I don’t really warm up. I just wait around and BS with the other guy. 3. I don’t really do anything special. We go to camps in the offseason and learn from higher level refs. 4. Well, I have definitely had some comments that a high school newspaper can’t print. [He then told us many stories stories that were extremely funny, but due to explicit coments we are not allowed to tell] 5. My favorite call is a block with an and-one. I like to add a little flair with a nice hop step. Give the people a show. 6. I hate when a player gestures to the crowd after they score a three pointer or whatever and tries to make themselves stand out from the team. It doesn’t happen as much here but when you get to playoffs there are some higher level guys who do this. 7. I’m definitely not strict. I’m more of a middle of the road ref but people tend to know how I ref. 8. Some people call me the Doctor. 9. I’m the Water Supervisor for the city of Eureka. I own a race car and drive that as a hobby. 10. I like players who have fun when they play. They are still playing hard but they have fun. I like to have fun while I ref and interact with them and I like it when they interact back. Some players are too much in the zone and don’t want any

he man. The legend. The neck beard. Quinn Rice. An absolute icon of the Arcata High School community. If you don’t know him.. Where have you been the past four years? He can be identified by his unique attire, including neon garments, his superb parking job, and many other of his truly one-of-a-kind attributes. As a second year point guard on the Varsity basketball team, his enthusiasm on the bench last year will translate into hustle and energetic determination on the court this year. Quinn’s transition into his senior year of basketball has been accompanied by his original sense of humor and his beloved Brita filter. Here’s just a sliver of the exotic life of Quinn Rice: Pepperbox: What gets you pumped up before a game? Quinn Rice: Really good food. Really marinated steak. PB: What do you use to marinate your steak? QR: Beer and barbecue sauce. PB: Could you please explain your post game and practice attire? QR: Well, after practice, swag is pretty important. You definitely need to have after practice swag—like Luke Graves. It’s a symbol that you played hard and left it all, and then you gotta wear good attire swag afterwards, like pajama pants or something fashionable. And

before practice, you gotta wear Lakers warm ups or swim trunks. It’s whatever it is that you need to wear. PB: What is your relationship with the coaching staff? QR: Well me and coach Schmidt have P.E. together sixth period, so we’re a tag team P.E. teacher type thing. We haven’t quite been to lunch or dinner yet, but we will this year. Coach Hodges and I have a love hate relationship… that’s all I have to say about that. PB: How many times did you ask your coaches to go to Carls Jr. with you last year? QR: Umm, about every practice. After every practice. PB: Did you ever end up going? QR: Never. No, we never went. PB: What inspires you to play your best? QR: Look this video up, it inspires me everytime I see it! http://m. youtube.com/watch?v=33AntrByDg ** PB: Did you initiate the team group chat via text and what does it consist of? QR: Yeah, I started it. We had to clean it out a little to add everybody into their appropriate numbers, but it consists of very exclusive chatting. I can’t really explain what happens. PB: Why did you name your Vespa Tina? QR: It came to me. Slash also Margaux told me the name.

PB: Where do you only buy your shoes, and why? QR: Oh, I only buy them at Foot Locker because they have to be approved by people that approve shoes.

QR: Everybody, but it’s not really allowed, so I’d say Coach Nick and Rusty. PB: Why do you enjoy driving in silence? QR: Keeps you focused on the road. You gotta feel the road, PB: Do you have any game day hear the road, smell the road, superstitions? taste the road to know what QR: Superstitions, no.. I just.. you’re doing properly. Maybe McDonalds. PB: Could you explain your PB: What is not your dog? newfound love for the Lakers? QR: [insert crazy chuckle here] QR: Well, I don’t love them, I That dog is not my dog. That is just love their warm ups. They not my dog. get you really warm. They know how to do that. They perfected PB: What team trips are you the warm up. looking forward to this year?
