THE PROFESSION
2014 Annual Report
Dear AIA Colorado Members:
2  AIA Colorado 2014 Annual Report
WE ARE PROUD TO REPORT that within AIA Colorado, the power of association remains strong — architects and design professionals are collaborating and innovating to solve critical problems, elevate each other and design a better world. 2014 embodied the theme of “One AIA.” In April 2014, members of each of our four local chapters voted to merge with AIA Colorado in an effort to eliminate redundancies and more effectively leverage resources, staff and volunteers to address the issues that matter most to our members. Following the merger, our board members met with a task force of leaders representing our members from around the state to evolve our strategic plan. Four goals were identified: Advocacy, Knowledge, Outreach, and Resilience. Associations, like all businesses, must continually evolve to serve
CATHY ROSSET Executive Vice President & CEO
their members’ shifting needs. These four goals serve as our guide as we continue to improve AIA for our members, and for the profession. We are pleased to present the 2014 AIA Colorado Annual Report. We hope you will take time to review our progress towards these four goals. And, while we celebrate the accomplishments of last year, we also share where we are now and where we are headed next. We look forward to working with and serving the entire AIA Colorado community for years to come.
ADVOCACY Influence public policy to shape the profession and the realm in which architects practice.
KNOWLEDGE Provide members access to high-quality education, resources and tools to enhance their professional practice and pursuit of excellence.
OUTREACH Demonstrate the value of AIA architects to the AEC industry, clients and the public.
RESILIENCE Lead the profession through a united membership and maintain sufficient resources to serve AIA Colorado members.
As always, we encourage our members to contact us with any questions or if we can be of service.
ANGELA VAN DO, AIA 2015 AIA Colorado President

INFLUENCE PUBLIC POLICY to shape the profession and the realm in which architects practice. Repeatedly, our members tell us one of the most important activities AIA Colorado does is advocate on behalf of architects — at the federal level, at the state capitol, and in our local communities. We empower our local sections to engage in policy on a local level, and build relationships with local leaders. In the future, we hope to build our capacity to provide further support to our local sections. At a state level, AIA Colorado takes a formal position on legislation that impacts the profession. AIA Colorado elevated the architecture profession through the following advocacy efforts:
2014–2015 ADVOCACY HIGHLIGHTS
LICENSING: AIA Colorado was at the table when the Department of Regulatory Agencies updated the Board Rules to bring them into alignment with the current Architect, Professional Engineer and Professional Land Surveyor 4 AIA Colorado 2014 Annual Report
Licensing Law, and adopted NCARB’s recommendations for IDP hours. The new rules took effect Sept. 1, 2015. CONTINUING EDUCATION: AIA Colorado drafted and advocated for an amendment to HB141136 Regulation of Continuing Professional Education, which continued the Department of Regulatory Affair’s authority to monitor and audit continuing education for licensed architects, rather than unintentionally transfer that responsibility to the Department of Education. CONSTRUCTION LITIGATION REFORM: AIA Colorado supported two bills in 2014 and 2015 that would have eased the construction litigation environment surrounding for-sale multi-family developments near Transit Oriented Development. HISTORIC PRESERVATION: AIA Colorado supported HB14-1311,
the Job Creation and Main Street Revitalization Act. The passage of the law made tax incentives available to commercial properties undergoing historic preservation. CONTRACTS: AIA Colorado opposed HB14-1165, Private Construction Contract Retainage and Payments. The bill would have limited retainage of payment to 5% across all private contracts, regardless of financing terms and risk factors involved. The bill died in Committee. AIA Colorado continues to work with the Building Jobs 4 Colorado Coalition to address what may be the underlying concern of subcontractors: timely payments.

DEMONSTRATE THE VALUE of AIA Architects to the A/E/C industry, prospective clients, and the public. AIA Colorado is the voice of the architecture profession in Colorado. On behalf of our members, we aim to increase visibility and understanding of the profession by promoting the importance of architects and architecture. We achieve this goal through events, public relations and campaigns. As we look ahead, we have engaged a public relations firm to help us refresh and clarify our messaging, and lay out a plan to highlight the importance of architects and architecture year-round. AIA Colorado elevated the architecture profession through the following outreach efforts:
2014–2015 OUTREACH HIGHLIGHTS
AIACOLORADO.ORG: In 2014, AIA Colorado invested in a revamp of aiacolorado.org. We are excited 6  AIA Colorado 2014 Annual Report
to support the evolution of both aiacolorado.org and aia.org into a customized, one-stop-shop where members go to find information based on local membership, career level and selected areas of interest. ANNUAL AWARDS: Our annual awards encompass the statewide and local design and honor awards, Young Architects Awards Gala, and the residential design focused Architects Choice Awards. They are a platform for peer recognition and a way to create a deeper public appreciation for outstanding design. In 2014, we combined four of these awards programs into a single celebration, allowing us make a bigger and more concentrated media announcement. Our members also appreciated attending an event where they were able to learn about outstanding work outside of their local communities. ARCHITECTURE MONTH: In 2014, we challenged our local section
Outreach Directors to reinvigorate Architecture Month for April 2015. Our Colorado Architecture Month calendar featured member submitted events from across the state. These events included Box City in Colorado Springs, Doors Open Denver, and architecture film events in Boulder, Vail, Aspen and Steamboat. We also created a brewery tour highlighting breweries designed by our members.

In addition, our Emerging Professionals Committee organized a multi-disciplinary networking social called Meet the Dark Side.
COLORADO PUBLIC RADIO: At the request of our members, AIA Colorado sponsored a month of underwriting on CPR to remind Coloradans that design matters, and that AIA Colorado can connect them with an architect.
ORAL HISTORY PROJECT: Work continues on the Oral History Project, thanks to a grant from the State Historic Fund. The purpose of the project is to capture interviews with Colorado architects and create short video clips on the importance of preserving Colorado architecture.
OUTREACH EVENTS: Throughout 2014, AIA Colorado and our local sections sponsored and volunteered at events across the state including Colorado Construction Career Days, the Cool Sciences Fair, Colorado Women’s Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony for Elizabeth Wright Ingraham, FAIA, and the Red Brick Artist Tribute to local architect Harry Teague, AIA. One reason our members are attracted to AIA Colorado is their dedication to the highest standards of professionalism and integrity. AIA Colorado elevated the architecture profession through the following education efforts:
2014–2015 EDUCATION HIGHLIGHTS
CONTINUING EDUCATION: At the recommendation of our member-led Programs Evaluation Committee, AIA Colorado took a three-pronged approach to continuing education in 2014. This included a mix of in-person presentations, recorded presentations for 24/7 viewing, and

a resource area for members to find additional educational opportunities hosted by Professional Affiliate Members and allied organizations. We moved away from our former lunch-based model to try Cocktails & Credits and Coffee & Credits, and hosted longer (1.5–2.0 CEH) programs with speakers recommended by the Knowledge Committee. ONLINE LIBRARY: At the request of members, AIA Colorado launched a library of online books as an exclusive benefit to members. Members may check out e-books and view continuing education videos at no charge. MENTORING: Through a partnership with CU Denver College of Architecture and Planning, AIA Colorado provides a mentor-protégé matching service. This year, our Mentorship Task Force reviewed the current program, researched similar
programs from other organizations, and recommended areas for expansion and enhancement. CAREER LEARNING: The Professional Practice Series tends to gain momentum about every other year, and we are anticipating demand in 2016. We are hearing more interest in topics addressing how to move up within a firm, marketing and promotion, and becoming a business owner. In the meantime, The Emerging Professionals are pulling together a forum focused on students, new graduates and those looking to grow in their careers. PATH TO LICENSURE: AIA Colorado’s ARE preparation programs remain strong, and include study sessions, trivia nights, a resource library and mentor-led presentations on exam content.
Looking ahead, we will aim to recruit mentors for the next generation of ARE support. In addition, AIA Colorado continues to support an Architect Licensing Advisor (formerly known as IDP Coordinator) who serves as a resource and liaison to NCARB on behalf of members pursuing licensure.
