Comme des Garcons Boutique & Showroom Student: Bhavana Shyamsundar Owner: Savannah College of Art and Design Location: Tokyo, Japan Category: Student Project
This project analyzes an architectural space and concept through the protruded and recessed pieces that created a part-to-whole massing. Individual pieces were put together, varying by length, portraying the conception of depth. While the ground condition mimics and addresses the language of the city Tokyo. By creating varying and staggering lengths this automatically combines shadow deceptions. And by inter-penetrating different shapes and planes in particular extrusions elevates the concept of depth. This project is solely conceptual so the floor plans were based off of the form that we created. The shapes that were created within this form had to have a women’s & men’s retail, changing rooms, elevator shaft, cafe, accessories, event space and exhibition space. Comme des Garcons is known for going against the norm when it comes to the feminine body.

Over the past decade, Georgia Tech has established a dynamic connection with the city of Atlanta at Tech Square, an urban streetscape with shops, restaurants, hotels and “town and gown research initiatives. During the same period, adjacent to the Existing Student Center, Georgia Tech has replaced a former surface parking lot with a central new campus greenspace, Tech Green. Unfortunately, the existing Student Center is both too small for the current student body, and too closed off from its environment to take full advantage of its new context. Together with a fundamental shift toward ecologically minded site planning and architecture on campus, the New Campus Center is intended to amplify its location at the center of campus, and create an open, accessible and restorative place for all members of the campus community.

The design team transformed an abandoned, historic barn into a unique and vibrant student activity center. Built at the turn of the century, the barn is on the National Register and embodies Clemson University’s agricultural roots. It was originally used as an experimental station focusing on healthier livestock practices. For the past twenty years, the barn was used for storage and exhibited signs of significant deterioration. The university desired to restore the barn and create a space that was truly unique to their institution. The program called for a collaborative space for students that provides an inviting destination for food service and nightlife entertainment on campus.

United Way of Greater Atlanta Firm: tvsdesign Owner: United Way of Greater Atlanta
Additional Design Team: Steve Clem, Elizabeth Levine, Lindsey Kious, Kate Bachelder, Raleigh Arrowood
Location: Atlanta, Georgia Category: Interior Architecture
United Way of Greater Atlanta’s mission is to foster a community where every child can thrive and has the opportunity to reach their potential: they needed a workplace that facilitates that mission. As the only office tenant occupying three floors of a building they own in downtown Atlanta, United Way’s new space provided both flexibility and opportunity. To prioritize features under tight budget restraints, the designers conducted a vision session, department interviews and surveys. The resulting information found that the top desires were connecting employees, improving workflow, and enhancing employee well-being. From this, the designers planned an open, interconnected stair between the three floors, stacked common areas promoting collaboration on each floor near the stairs, and skylights at the top floor that lend more natural light.

[re]Forum in Berlin Student: Nicholas Place Owner: Savannah College of Art and Design Location: Berlin, Germany Category: Student Project
The aim of this thesis is to address the disconnect between the current generation and the modern identity of Berlin, Germany. Concentrating on the contemporary focus of technology and automation, computational design is the driving force behind the redesign of an existing public forum in the central Mitte district of Berlin. The material culture of Berlin and the importance of musical associations throughout the city and its importance to the existing urban culture provides the data necessary for algorithmic form generation. These extracted data values each affect separate functions of the algorithm, therefore generating an exclusive framework. Growing above the existing statue of Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels, one of the competing monuments of the city, there is no attempt to conceal history, but rather to allow for different perspectives on the past, while remaining grounded in the present.

Jacksonville Homeless Shelter Student: Bhavana Shyamsundar Owner: Savannah College of Art and Design Location: Jacksonville, Florida Category: Student Project
There are currently 1.5 million homeless youth living on the streets in the United States and around 300,000 children are at risk of sex trafficking. Woman, and children become homeless due to physical, sexual and/or emotional abuse from their parents, making them feel neglected and making them the biggest targets for sex trafficking. Florida was named 3rd in human trafficking cases, where Jacksonville in particular was ranked 3rd in the nation for HIV/AIDS. Around 80% of Florida victims are women and children, which brought to light a need for a homeless shelter in this area. The Serenity House will be a safe haven for youth and young woman who are trying to get out of the situation they are in, as well as house mothers and their families so woman can engage and be surrounded by a healthy and loving environment.

SCADTaste Student: Nicolas Barrera Owner: Savannah College of Art and Design Location: Atlanta, Georgia Category: Student Project
SCADTaste is a conceptual project for the Savannah College of Art and Design. This facility will house a new culinary branch for the school, providing a space for the students and the community of Atlanta. The plan (sited in Midtown Atlanta right beside SCAD Atlanta and the Peachtree Christian Church) includes a residential tower, a higher education facility, and a restaurant. The presentation of a plate is as important as its taste. By analyzing the sun angles during the different class sessions in the last day of the academic year, the building allows the perfect beam of light to cut through the perforated metal skin and slightly wash the final project of the culinary students. The same way every critique room has its own enlightenment moment, many spaces throughout the building have similar conditions. In the restaurant, an army of 36 skylights catch the northern light and make the dining-in experience more pleasant.

A new 1,000sf “pocket bar/cafe” for Octane Coffee in a former boxoffice space of the Woodruff Arts Center and High Museum of Art. The exceptionally narrow interior was further attenuated by adding mirrored ceilings to double the apparent height, and mirroring the back of alcoves to visually dissolve the interior walls, creating a deeply exterior spatial experience. Lighting and signage are combined in the form of suspended neon arcs, which when mirrored create large floating O’s (for Octane). In contrast to this airiness, booths and bench areas are rendered quiet, close, and comfortable, lined with plywood and neoprene-laminated felt. This noticeably intimate acoustic quality is an experiential extension of the symphony hall and theaters that are part of the Arts Center.

Providing convenient on-site child care is an integral component of the benefits offered to employees at this healthcare system. So, when a planned hospital expansion necessitated a replacement facility, a steering committee began searching for a new location. Utilizing a narrow lot adjacent to an existing parking deck, the design team was tasked to envision a new “world class child care center. The challenges of providing secure entry, welcoming classrooms, and imaginative play spaces, all over multiple levels would ultimately become design opportunities.

Owner: Fernbank Natural History Museum Location: Atlanta, Georgia Category: Built
The Fernbank Natural History Museum recently resumed ownership over one of the largest old growth forests in a U.S. metropolitan area, immediately adjacent to the museum itself. This project was part of a master planning effort intended to reorient the museum and its visitors toward an emphasis on forest stewardship. The elevated walkway and pods form a series of outdoor exhibits that gradually introduce visitors to the forest and convey them from the rear terrace through the woods and into the reclaimed old growth area. The design of the walkway minimizes any impact on the forest by following a trajectory that winds its way through existing trees and their associated root zones, touching the ground as minimally as possible using slender steel columns.

Interiors: Arianna Sabra Interiors
Category: Residential over $1 Million
Located on a sloping 1-acre site in North Atlanta, the Sandy Springs House is designed to provide large interior and exterior entertainment spaces for a socially active couple and their adult children’s families. The interior entertainment space becomes the nucleus of the design by combining the living and dining areas into one large, high-ceilinged room located in the middle of the site with the house entry to the north and the exterior entertainment spaces to the south. Bedrooms and workrooms create a wing running north-south along the east side of the site, and the kitchen, garage and connected pool house form a parallel wing running along the west side. The resulting H-shape plan provides 2 clearly defined exterior spaces: a public entry court to the north and private exterior entertainment spaces to the south.

House on a Cliff Firm: Surber Barber Choate + Hertlein Location: Monterrey, Mexico Category: Residential under $1 Million
Several years after building a large house alongside a formidable mountain range in northeast Mexico, its owners decided they wanted a small house nearby to accommodate visitors. The original house, however, had consumed all the available convenient building area on the site. In order to create a location for the new small house, its structure was placed on top of a jagged cliff looming above. In contrast to its complicated perch on the edge of a jagged rock, the new small house contains just a few simple spaces. One bedroom & bathroom serve a common living/dining/kitchen space that is as tall as it is wide. An elevated exterior deck extends from the common living space, as does a smaller porch cantilevered from the bedroom. These interior & exterior spaces are oriented to the dramatic views. As a foil for these views, the house is rendered minimally. Its white vertical surfaces contrast with the varied textures of the landscape.

This boutique hotel located in Elberton, Ga is a formerly dilapidated, newly revitalized building. Completed in April of last year, the original details of this hotel were preserved as part of the City’s heritage. This project was originally constructed in 1925 as one of the first fireproof hotels in the south, but by the time the historic structure was purchased by the City of Elberton, Georgia, from a private owner in 2009, it was in desperate need of repair. The designers then moved forward with creating a unique experience that preserved the building’s historic character while infusing the interior with a hotel environment that is unparalleled in North Georgia.

Deference Student: Felipe Palacio Trujillo Owner: Savannah College of Art and Design Location: Atlanta, Georgia Category: Student Project
Deference is a project consisting of a mixed used building housing a culinary center and college dormitories for students of the Savannah College of Art and Design. The building is located on the north side of Midtown in Atlanta, GA, neighboring the existing SCAD building and Peachtree Christian Church. The direct adjacency and a desire of dialog with an important historical building, coupled with a need for easy circulation and a substantial program became the factors that influenced the design approach. Effortless circulation between the several points of entry was achieved by creating a plinth that elevated the site and provided circulation between the main entry, the existing SCAD building and the back of the church. This plinth provided optimal underground space for parking while becoming a sculpture garden designed for SCAD’s sculpture program, while creating ample space for gardens and community meeting points.

Combining beautiful marshfront views, repurposed building materials, spacious porches, and generous fenestration, the Burnett Residence successfully integrates a secondary residence on an existing lot while maintaining floodplain compliance. Gently set within a surrounding landscape of live oaks and sandy marsh on a small footprint using elevated piers, the project melds together site sensitivity, quality design, and well executed craftsmanship. Through the addition of porches, the house’s open interior floor plan, paired with a compact design program, allowed it to retain a minimal footprint, an important ecological and aesthetic consideration along Savannah’s coastal waterways.
