a curator’s retreat

description: Design a retreat for an art curator on a bluff, overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, which may be used as an escape from his/her hectic urban life. The proposal should be a place where the client both lives and works and may spend anywhere from a week to several months, sometimes in seclusion. On occasion the client will have a small group of colleagues that may visit for meetings or to discuss new acquisitions for their gallery. Projects must demonstrate a clear awareness of the context and respond appropriately (beach vs. forest, solar orientation, breezes, etc.)

description: The fourth design studio in the architecture degree sequence focuses on projects located in both natural and man-made contexts, the evolution of context specific architectural ideas, and on the relationship between structural expression and architectural space experienced by the senses. Documentation and an analysis of the context (site plan, sections, diagrams on site conditions, site model) are included.

Studies of precedents are part of the studio. Students produce architectural and analytical drawings of given examples. They gain understanding of the correlation between ideas, the main elements of the design and the spatial results.

Feedback typically occurs through group discussions and reviews (pin-ups) and one-on-one discussions (desk critiques). While most studio work is done individually, the studio is intended as a collective learning environment wherein the design work is enhanced by participation in group discussions in a critical dialogue.
