LIFECOMFORT ACTIVE AIR MATTRESS RANGE

Pressure Injury prevention and management plays a significant part in the overall care of residents and patients in aged care and acute care settings. In 2014, international guidelines* around pressure care were updated. These guidelines made significant recommendations around overlay and mattress selection for the prevention and management of Pressure Injuries. The Active Air range of alternating overlays and mattresses has been designed with these guidelines in mind. Easy to operate and highly effective, the Active Air range offers a solution for “at risk” to “high risk” users, in all settings.

Key Risk Factors Addressed Several factors have been identified as significant contributors to Pressure Injury development. Active Air has considered these risk factors and designed a range of mattresses and overlays that addresses each one.

Pressure When a person has limited movement, pressure builds up at bony prominences and weight-bearing body parts. This pressure leads to the occlusion of small blood vessels, meaning that blood flow, therefore oxygen, is restricted. This leads to cell and tissue death which results in Pressure Injury.

Pressure from Support Surface

To combat this, the Active Air range alternates in a 1-in-2 pattern. 50% of body weight is in contact with the surface at all times on an inflated cell, while 50% of body weight is relieved of pressure. This pressure on / pressure off cycle encourages blood flow and facilitates pressure distribution.

Microclimate Microclimate refers to temperature and moisture at the interface between the skin and a support surface. For every 1°C temperature elevation of a human cell, metabolic rate increases by 10%**. This increases the need for nutrients and oxygen – both of which are needed to optimise skin protection and prevent Pressure Injury. In order to prevent Pressure Injury or promote recovery, maintaining ideal skin microclimate is essential. The Active Air range of overlays and mattresses features a breathable, vapour permeable cover to encourage and enhance optimal skin microclimate.

The Active Air cell design also utilises air flow during each alternating cycle to ventilate and reduce skin heat and moisture.

Friction & Shear Forces

Skin

Friction is a contributing factor in Pressure Injury development. Friction is a mechanical force that occurs when two surfaces slide against each other, for example skin against a support surface. Thanks to the multi-stretch properties of the Active Air covers, friction against a user’s skin is reduced.

Support Surface

Shear is the combination of gravity / pressure and friction

Friction Forces

Shear is a significant cause of Pressure Injury development. The affect of shear forces can be more serious. When exposed to shear, the deeper layers of skin, along with blood vessels, become damaged. Shear forces can become more problematic when the head of the bed is raised.

Friction

To help combat this, Active Air systems incorporate a lower layer of air cells that remain constantly inflated. This means when the bed is moved, the top two layers of the cells move with the user, while the bottom layer remains in position on the bed platform. This also reduces the risk of bottoming out.

Active Air overlays and mattresses also feature the AutoStay design. This durable retention band prevents the inadvertent movement of the cells that could lead to friction and shear.
